remember a time where I was more excited to be talking every day about this team except for what was it week two or week three against the Cowboys i think it was week three in 2023 i thought I said that was my favorite week covering this team even without Kyler Murray with Josh Chops not with the team for two months so when I can get smarter people than myself on this show I want to level it up i get this dude among others ari friend of the show i think we do friend of the show at this point right this is fifth time fifth or sixth time yeah i mean once you you you go into multiple times on the show you’re officially a friend of the show that means the guest likes coming on and I like him there we go i dig it i dig it man and my sports update on Twitter um now the host of uh NFL Spotlight on YouTube we’ll talk about that in the second segment ari had a great interview with Montya for GM and the Cardinals uh that I want to deep dive into in the second segment ari when the new regime took over you were in right away um since you know you came on you talked about it weren’t the hugest fan of Steve Kim uh we’re kind of generalizing here but you kind of saw the tea leaves early like well if they do what Monty Osour’s capable of doing after the first draft and Kyler Murray plays well we could experience where the Cardinals are right now do you see the next iteration of the Cardinals taking place or is it still a TBD even though it maybe shouldn’t be with all of the roster bolstering they’ve done yeah you know so last year on my show I actually picked the Cardinals as the surprise team of the year i had Jonathan Ganon as the um dark horse coach of the year type of a guy and at one point in the year I was feeling really good i was like you guys were in first place in the NFC West five and four six and four whatever it was and I was like my pick is hitting it’s gonna be great um obviously it kind of fell apart at the end of the year but I look at this team and I remember coming on when Monty was hired i just looked at his first moves there and it really reminded me a lot of the Detroit Lions rebuild when Brad Holmes got there which was a bit of a similar situation an aging roster not many cornerstone players and both GMs in those cases Brad Holmes there man Ford here realized this is not an overnight thing we got to really rebuild this thing from the ground up and really not try to do any shortcuts and as soon as Monty got there obviously the the very there was no crazy activity in for agency no crazy contracts the big trade in his first draft of moving back from three to 12 back up to six getting more future assets um obviously where that Texans first draft pick the next year came in was not where you guys were expecting but um it it was basically him realizing that we’re going to draft and develop and get younger and get more assets and I knew Monty is a scout at heart that’s what he loves to do but he was bringing in his own people of course David Sierra dropped Kissle like I realized what he was doing and I was like “All right this is going to take some time but if he does it the way he wants to do it it’s unlike the Detroit situation where they had to go out there and get Jag like he had Kyler Murray there so once I saw that I was like “Okay this is my team over here that I feel like give it a couple years and they’re going to do this the right way.” And last off season they started sprinkling in a couple of free agents here and there but I feel like they weren’t really sure should we go all in should we stay back yet it was a bit of a half in half out approach this off seasonason was we’re going for it we feel like we’re ready we saw the improvements from the young guys we know we’re ascending team even the coaching staff a lot of young guys who are also growing in their roles and now this year was let’s go for it and of course we saw what they did with the defensive front we saw what they did in the draft um getting the players that they did we’ll talk a little bit about that here in a second but I saw them finally realizing okay we’re ready for that next step we’re ready to make that potential playoff push and this feels like the same year that Detroit had where they were able to finally take the league by storm i kind of feel like Arizona has that potential this year of all the young guys that they drafted all the young guys they have plus all the veteran additions as well i feel like this could be a sneaky team going into 2025 yeah and I mean the the interesting part when when usually when people say go for it it’s they sign two guys to $120 million contracts and they’re going to be the dudes you’re going to get Jaylen Ramsey and you have Aaron Donn you got big dudes they signed very team friendly deals across the board i mean Dalvin Johnson Josh Sweat uh and and Trey McBride namely like Kas came back for six and a half but it’s like those guys are making like 110 combined like these aren’t big numbers they’re not big guarantees and I think that’s the biggest like indicator especially Kas Campbell i say Kas Campbell is the biggest offseason signing because of what it means for the shift in the organization where they ran his ass out of town when everybody loved him and they didn’t want to pay him and then he became all world everywhere else like that was the biggest one like character-wise and you bring in Joshua buying into this he could have got more money elsewhere dvin could have taken a paycheck and gone to Jacksonville but they all see this vision and that’s the biggest impetus for me in believing that the next step is truly upon us if these dudes can play to 80% of their potential i mean you’re spot on and you look at the defensive front that was one of the weaknesses last year and I think Monty identified that we know they were trying to get Milton Williams that was just got way out of the price range they were looking at of course goes to New England on that crazy contract but you pivot to John Sweat who is obviously an outstanding player as well who also has that familiarity with Jonathan Ganon dvin Thomas has been at a number of stops in his career but all those teams love the player and the person and of course you mentioned Kus the reason I love Klay so much first of all like he’s one of the best people there is in the league kind of belongs in Arizona like you said but the Walter Nolan draft pick alongside that walter in my mind it’s speaking to people around the NFL like scouts before the draft there were people who liked him more than Mason Graham which of course everyone talked about Mason Graham as a slam dunk top five pick he ended up going number five but talentwise Walter Nolan was a top five top 10 talent problem with him that I heard from scouts was getting the fire out of him sometimes and there’s no better person than Jonathan Ganon who gets the fire out of players but then Kas being there as the guy who’s willing to teach and men mentor like he was asked about it at his press conference um during mini camp and he was like I saw what Joe Flacco said like I I I’ll be here for the young guys i’ll teach them everything like that is a big person to have there as a sounding board as well so I love that part of it um obviously you have Darius Robinson who dealt with some things last year injuries personal stuff he should be back to full force this year bj O Jolari um you you traded for Baron Brown resigned him as well the defensive front essentially has gone from a weakness to a strength now and Monty mentioned in the interview as well that that was a group last year that dealt with so many injuries and that’s part of the NFL when you have 17 games now it kind of reminds me a little bit of Jonathan Ganon came from Philadelphia the thing that the Eagles are known for on the defensive front is rotating guys in and out keeping them fresh i think Arizona has the ability to do that this year of all the guys they have there yeah and before we get to the interview which we’ll dive deep into next segment like for me the the sign of a very very good and sustainable roster is one that has rookies that have a buddy system with a veteran in the same position group you know and it’s not like oh everybody’s not out to be a mentor everybody like you’re No I’ve got to put food on my family’s table too so you’re my teammate i love you and I’m not going to also be watching film with you in the meantime like the Cardinals have Buddha Baker they’ve got um James Connor they’ve got Kus Campbell dudes that are all world Walter Payeyton man of the year dudes to be able to mentor guys like Trey Benson Will Johnson Garrett Williams still who’s turning into more of a vet like Dan Taylor Dmerson Walter as you mentioned like the infrastructure is strong for the Cardinals for the first time since I’ve moved to Phoenix and started radio in 2011 like I’ve never seen something like this before but does that resonate from the national media because the indifference surrounding the Cardinals we used to joke about this early on like what are we going to talk about nobody talks about the Cardinals it’s different now is it Do you see it as a sustained difference i mean there’s definitely a good blend of the veteran leadership and the right voices and the right people inside a locker room and I feel like also like paying a guy like Trey McBride this off season is a good message for the locker room like this is a guy who was drafted here i know it was the previous regime but he performed we went out of the way we paid him made him the highest paid tight end at the time because he is somebody who did what he was supposed to do here in the organization so that’s also another good sign over here that they’re doing but I think of all those veterans you mentioned again going back to that Detroit example when they were hired there were a couple of players who are already in the building but like the Taylor Deckers the Frank Ragnals and those type of guys but they also brought in some guys outside the building like a Jamal Williams I remember and a Michael Brockers I remember and those guys truly came in just to be a sounding board for the other player that’s really all they were there for and they were perfectly fine with it and now you had that blend of those type of players with the young guys and they I don’t want to say they hold their hands or whatever but at least those guys could lead by example and be there for the young guys and we know all the young guys that have come through that Detroit building that all made made it different detroit also one of the unique things they did and Arizona has a couple of guys at least on their coaching staff who are like this but a lot of former players were on that coaching staff in Detroit which is another sign of okay we did this before we know how to do it we know what it’s like to be in the shoes of a player this is how it’s done so um that’s a very very important part of this as well i kind of I’ll give a quick story i remember in New York years ago but Justin Tuck was a very very beloved player in New York and he was a locker room guy and I remember the Giants had you know these guys like a Jason Pierre Paul who was a bit of a younger guy and Justin Tuck was about to become a free agent and the Giants let him go and it was a very big deal went to the Raiders and that same season a lot of the younger guys in the defensive line you could tell they were missing that Justin Tuck influence in the locker room so sometimes that you’re you’re you know finagling over a million dollar million dollars here about bringing a player back that impact of a veteran goes a long way over the course of a season especially right now when it’s a 17 game season and it’s much longer and there’s always going to be those ups and downs throughout a course of a year having those guys who’s been there and done that it’s a big deal hell yeah it is uh Ari 33rd team joining me uh he also hosts NFL Spotlight um a new YouTube channel um he interviewed Monty Austin for it uh a couple weeks ago I believe at this point we’re going to dive deep into it what’s Monty like we’ll talk about it next this episode of Locked on Cardinals is brought to you by a new family member of ours in um my sports update one of the best out there um dude Monty Austin fort reminds me like a combination of like a bodyguard and someone you want to introduce to your mother it’s kind of like a combination of like he’s a quiet dude he’s very forceful and and and and strong when he speaks and then he’ll hug the bleep out of all his players after a win like he seems like nine dudes in one heaven forbid GM show emotion he is full of that talk to me about your your first just inclination this was kind of a special dude when you got to interview him on your show so I have the NFL spotlight show like you said it’s on YouTube Apple Spotify wherever you listen to your podcast and the idea of the show let me just give some background is to have people around the NFL player coaches executives agents whoever it is who deserves some more recognition so um I was trying to get money for a little bit here because of what he’s done in Arizona so far and how the team started with four wins and doubled it to eight wins last year and now it’s clearly a team on the rise and part of the reason I wanted to get him and what we do on the show is we go through some of these people’s journeys to where they are right now in the NFL and how they even got here and Monty has been in the NFL for 25 years right now and I feel like especially fans out there you know we know whenever head coaches get hired we know who they are it’s an OC a DC we see them every single week gm’s getting hired you don’t know who this scout is you don’t know who this cap guy is on some other team like you never heard of the guy you never see him over the course of a year and that’s basically Monty Austin for it because he was you know locked in with New England for many many years went to Tennessee for a few years but you never really got to see him much there are no interviews out there with him so I kind of wanted to get to know the person of who this man is and it’s such a fascinating journey of what he’s had because he was in New England and he won four Super Bowls was part of those teams and one of the things that I learned when when speaking to him for 30 plus minutes there on the show is he has been around so many brilliant football minds over the course of his career if you go back to New England the amount of future GMs who were there that he kind of was with them and saw them from a young age to eventually moving up the ladder and becoming a GM wherever it was i’m sure that kind of gave him the confidence that he could do the same thing let me just list some names jason Light who’s now the Buccaneers GM also had a stop in Arizona at one point he was in New England john Robinson was there nick Cacerio Dave Ziggler Bob Quinn um at one point in the interview he’s like when I mention all those names he’s like “All right you forgot about um Adam Peters who’s now the Commander GM um Thomas Dimmitro was there of course Bill Valich was there.” Like you have all these future GMs who are all in New England with him during the course of his time and I think that probably played a big role in his career as well where he sees all these guys who started as young scouts young cap guys um Scott Pio is another name who was there and basically seeing them rise up in the NFL and become GMs elsewhere so that was one thing about him that was very unique and just to give an example of just how long he’s been in the NFL his you know one of the first teams he was with was an expansion team the Houston Texans when they came into the NFL that was one of the very first teams he was with and he was with Charles Charlie Castle is another great GM over the years in the NFL so he’s been around some brilliant football minds one of the things that I kind of respected a lot about him that I realized before I interviewed him but I think it’s very very difficult for executives around the NFL Alex is leaving a place you’ve been with for a long time like sometimes get people get very comfortable being in one location moving up the ladder and whatever it is and eventually maybe I’ll get a GM call here and there he decided on his own in 2020 that you know New England has been great for 15 years and I’ve loved every second here but I want to take my place to a different location and see some other people work and keep on ascending in my career and working somewhere else and he basically left the Patriots left Bill Bich and went over to the Tennessee Titans who once he got there and John Robinson was there Mike Greybel was there if you guys remember they were one of the very best teams in the AFC he helped build that roster with John Robinson and they were the number one seed in the AFC for a year they got bounced by the Bengals in the playoffs that year but um they really became one of the better teams in the AFC um and he was a big part of that and that’s really where his career started to take off because eventually while he was there that’s when other NFL teams started realizing wait there’s this guy from New England who won four Super Bowls who’s now with this Tennessee team maybe we started interviewing him and of course he gets interviews in Chicago in Carolina in Cleveland um in Tennessee once John Robinson was let go and of course finally gets the job in Arizona but you realize over the course of his career how many places he’s been and how many people he has worked with um and how he even got started in the NFL bringing into the NFL especially nowadays it’s hard like you want to get your foot in in the door he was able to get in and he you you know we go through the story go watch it but um his journey is a really really incredible one and of course um what he’s doing in Arizona now um we could talk about that but it’s it’s it’s quite the journey for a guy who is a scout at heart always wanted to do this and um did it for 25 years until he finally got his chance yeah Ari my sports update on Twitter talking about his interview with Monty Osaffort on NFL spotlight on YouTube and wherever you get your podcast um is there anything that he said that surprised you even after your extensive research beforehand like or you were like “Oh I didn’t know that.” Or “Oh that’s impressive.” Or anything like that that kind of ma made your eyebrows raise when you talked to him so I guess I’ll do two so first early in his career like I mentioned before he kind of was seesawing back and forth with the Texans and the Patriots like if you look at his Wikipedia like you see Texans Patriots Texans Patriots like what is going on over here so um um he explained that one but part of it also cuz I was curious like why in the world you bouncing around two teams over here um he mentioned that during one of those stops the reason he went back to Houston was because he found his future wife there and it’s like that’s a pretty good excuse um that makes a lot of sense so um I like that part of it i didn’t realize um that part of his journey and then the other one probably and I guess it could be just GM talk I guess but I did ask him about doing that big trade with the Texans moving from three down to 12 and back up to six and I asked him just you knew you were getting a future first round pick from the Texans did it like hurt you to watch that next season how much the Texans were winning everyone said that Arizona was going to have two top five picks out of this and of course the Houston pick ends up all the way in 27 where they make the playoffs and they win a playoff game um you could tell inside he was like “Could you guys start losing?” But um um you know but he he gave the classic GM answer of of you know in the NFL we always see a team going from worst to first i’m happy for my guy Nick who of course is having a lot of success now in Houston but I really wish we got the real answer there because I think when he did that trade he thought like this is going to be the fast track to a rebuild i’m going to have at least you know my own pick somewhere high likely i’m not sure if he was thinking that and expecting the deep to be bad but you know what I mean then of course Houston should be bad and of course they were pretty good but um not getting the actual answer for that question um I really want to know what he really would have said if if it was off the record yeah that’s fascinating that’s fascinating all right so um we’re going to talk about Kyler for a couple minutes and I’ll get you out of here next um is Kyler the guy i mean he’s got the best setup he’s had since being drafted in 2019 by a long shot is it going to be enough for Kyler Murray to shut up the naysayers we’ll discuss it next arrow joining me this episode of Lockdown Cardinals is brought to you by our friends over at Game Time Arimerov um dude Kyler Murray um my thing with Kyler is and this is what I pretty much I broach a topic every time you come on and I say the same thing say Kyler Murray were up on the trade block 15 teams would call 12 14 around there depending on like exactly what people need for a specific skill set it’s like I feel that Kyler Murray’s more valuable than Arizona Cardinals fans think he is just because of what his potential is when he’s great six quarterbacks can do what he does when he’s great but then you see the bottom fall out more than more than you’d want a six-year seven-year quarterback to to you know convey do you think Kyler Murray can be the dude or is this a guy who’s potentially a stop gap until you know they bring somebody in after this season like ask him very candidly tyler will turn I believe 28 years old here in August so he’s still pretty much in the prime of his career i don’t I don’t know why Cardinals fans think that Alex i mean would you rather be the Cleveland Browns right now with those four quarterbacks would you rather be the Colts right now with Richardson and Daniel Jones would you rather be um there are so many the Saints with Tyler Shucker Spencer Aller like what would you ra like that’s the alternatives right now in the NFL would you rather be you know drafting those quarterbacks we had in this last draft where guys are being taken like uh you know in the second round and third round and like is that what you’re looking for like what else are you looking for here kyler Murray is a really good quarterback and it’s hard to find those in the NFL he’s still very young there are offensive pieces here that are really really good which he’s still jelling with I would say i mean these are young guys um as well and I think the offensive staff is also really young which you got to keep in mind as well um it’s not like this is some veteran coaching staff who has been in the NFL for a very long time like Drew Petting is you know he’s a young offensive mind who has had moments in the NFL and has had some bad moments as well and he’s growing it’s just the reality of the situation so you’re hoping that he’s going to grow as well and if he’s growing that means Kyler Murray is growing as well so um he still has nearly $40 million in guaranteed salary next year is there a path to trading it yes the only way I see it ever becoming a possibility is the wheels really have to fall off this year but that’s when his value also diminishes like it really just makes no sense to me i I don’t see a pathway where it makes sense from an organizational standpoint to trade him because if he’s playing really well obviously you’re keeping him if he’s playing really bad the value is just not worth it right so I just don’t see any scenario where it makes sense to move on from him and again I just look at where the quarterback situation right now is in the NFL and how hard it is to find the quarterback it’s a difficult thing like it just is i mean the fact you guys have one you guys should be very very happy about that that’s the way I look especially in the NFC it’s not like you guys are in the AFC where you got to go through you know Lamar and Josh Allen and Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert and all those great quarterbacks the AFC has the NFC is essentially Jaylen Herz it’s Dak Prescott it’s those type of guys that we’re kind of talking about over here so if that’s the case Kyler Murray is very much right at the top in the NFC and if the team around them is good that gives you a chance in the NFC if you were in the AFC I understand at least having that conversation i get it in the NFC I just don’t get it yeah i mean it’s it’s a struggle sometimes you know it’s I think one of the things that people don’t really talk about a lot is like all of those vets that were in one place for a long time and then moved around like Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers and Aaron Rogers and stuff like that those quarterbacks don’t exist anymore like you don’t have that dude you can bring in for a year and trust to get you to eight wins and then you hope the rest of the team can get you to 10 or 12 in a playoff spot like you need two quarterbacks on your roster pretty much at all times in case there’s some sort of injury because quarterback injuries have had a meteoric rise it seems over the last 10 years and the quarterback the Cardinals have that which is Kobe Brcett and Kyler but I agree man it’s like when the great is great very few quarterbacks can do that and I think massaging that out is not only Kyler but it’s also Drew Pettson getting better so I agree with you Ari tell people where they can find you dude yeah I mean my sports update on Twitter it’s your one-stop shop for all NFL news and like we mentioned before NFL spotlight once a week we have a special guest around the NFL somebody deserves more recognition we had Monty Austin for the GM two weeks ago this week we had a
