well truly for him there is no place like home he’s been so dominant here and as a teammate you expect him when pitching at home this year to go out and dominate just as he has the fans expected and i think everyone around here knows that he’s a good pitcher even though we don’t see the same splits on the road we’re going to start to see that translate as well [Applause] swinging a foul back that’s out of play first pitch 707 the pitch oh that’s off the plate
he’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit mission accomplished the next offering misses two and two fights it off he’ll see another in the air out to center and that’ll get down for a hit so a man on base to start the inning
got to love the resiliency shown in that at bat battling with two strikes good extension on that swing took the pitch on the outside part of the plate and drove it up the middle he let it travel just enough so digging in jacob wilson max

in there at the knees all right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire’s calls but at this point he’s going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone slice to right and it goes just fouled
i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up
andy o2 he goes down looking oh you know that’s got to be very frustrating for this guy he knows the strike zone extremely well and you know what good hitters are not going to compromise is he’ll take that punch out but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything else
so the go-ahehead run in scoring position rooker will hit next that’s a strike across the top of the zone butler the runner at second with one away that one finds the zone and the count is 0 and2
he doesn’t seem to like to pitch up hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches 02 count now i think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there the o2 stays alive one out and a runner at second and a foul ball he stays alive come on foul ball it stays nothing and two knocks that one away and will do it again runner at second here one gone oh it’s a really good at bat what i like about this guy his bat stays in the zone for a long time and gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can forget it and that should quiet this home crowd his 17th of the year it’s two nothing he put a charge into that one that was a lightning swing right there no doubt about it [Applause] that home run was a no doubter as we dive into the numbers with stackcast crushed boo just absolutely crushed 112 mph on the exit vo and like you said no doubt about that one plenty of launch angle to give it that backspin as well and that carried way over the wall next to hit nick curts late on that fast ball

yeah that’s a tough pitch to stay on you don’t want to get beat inside and as you see that pitch continue to run away from you by the time it’s in the catcher mid you think it’s a ball off the plate away next up for the a’s maxy [Applause] that one’s in there that’s strike one 01’s the count [Applause] just missed first inning and already up to 23 pitches that’s ball two

well boo i can tell you’ve been working on that one but yes you are right this guy strikeout per nine over 11 i mean that’s just getting it done there are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup and when you look at what he’s able to do man it’s going to be a fun one to watch today
bottom of the first and stepping in for the yankees trent gisham come on trent swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field and there’s one away here’s a look at aaron boon’s lineup for the yankees a big part of it a guy with a great track record john carlos stanton he’s just been a consistent and dominant power threat throughout his career i mean over 400 career home runs i mean that just doesn’t happen to an average power hitter this guy’s been elite and we’ll see as he continues uh if he’s going to make it into coopertown into the hall of fame mvp mvp and he can’t come up with it still able to fire over and they get him the misplay made it a bit messy but they clean things up for the out
right two down base is empty ben rice stepping in now for the yankees
not only can he hit the cover off the ball he’s got a great eye as well swinging a ground ball and that’s just foul and healing one this one popped up wilson brings it in and the inning is over down in order goal to yankees they trail it here two nothing top of the second now the left fielder tyler sodro
tyler soder strub come on yankees let’s go max freed will go to work in there at the knees and that’s strike one [Applause] misses just off the outside edge i think that was a strike ed drummond behind the plate calling balls and strikes maybe one of the most respected umpires around the league
he’s not the kind of umpire that you’re likely to notice back there and that can be a huge compliment really so if you’re just kind of quietly doing your job staying consistent with your calls hitters pitchers managers even fans they’re all going to appreciate you ed drummond he’s that kind of umpire and now it’s even up
that big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate swing and a chopper out to short handles throws to first and quickly one away in the second the second base luis here’s luis orias he’s got pop which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field but he can jump you if you make a mistake swings through that one out in front that time man he really sells the change up with that arm action late on that fast ball threw that fast right by him slightly elevated that’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound see if he continues to climb the ladder one out base is empty hit on the ground to the right side rice takes it to the bag two up two down in the top of the second

he’s done a great job making contact recently batting over 300 so far this month now one missed ball one no strike in for a strike and it’s one and one hacks and misses it’s a strikeout came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front
many times if you do it’s a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they’ve got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there into left center for a base hit and that keeps the unit alive batting seven

throw to second save [Music] drilled out towards left center field that’s well struck hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double and a run comes in to score he puts a great swing on that pitch and drives home the run and that was always going to be a double but the bounce over the wall just took the guesswork out of it right away it was a nice swing so runner at second two down welts the next to hit and a foul ball [Applause] two outs all you got to do is concentrate and execute this next pitch get yourself out of the jam back into the dugout [Applause] to third muny jump throw and that’s a nice play to end the inning so they pick up a run on two hits no errors and a man left we play two full it’s the a’s two and the yankees one onto the third inning now here’s the leadoff hitter for the a’s lawrence butler
butler and that one wrapped foul check swing and he went that is strike two that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was that one sizzling on its way through to the outfield so a runner aboard to start the inning
i’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count too good of a pitch to hit right there you have to expand the zone keep that leadoff man off first base and now jacob wilson he was a strikeout victim his first time and that drops in for a strike you know these athletics doing a great job boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and i’m seeing very patient at bats out of them they’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well the short stop takes the ball still relatively early but with a pair of runs already on the board the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game hopped up judge really on his horse for this one fair ball lead runner to second so two on and nobody out
two consecutive base hits for these guys here there are a lot of nicknames people have attached to hits like that blooper flare ducksort lawn dart etc but whatever you want to call it it’s a knot and those are the ones that’ll make you smile as a hitter just about every time
first and second no outs and now here is brent rooker swings through that one for strike one 01’s the count first and second no outs we’re here in the top half of inning number three [Music] that one well upstairs and that’s ball one [Music] the one-1 is fouled off fights that one away still one and two butler the lead runner out at second wilson at first with no outs hard grounder into the outfield for a knock coming home the throw in he’ll score it’s 3-1
stringing them together that’s three hits in a row really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws and a dangerous hitter coming to the plate next up for the a’s nick curts ball one there
well he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout maybe the pitching coach to go out there and talk to him just a little bit the lefty the one looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone but i’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located very top of the strike zone middle away rolled to short could be two off balance feed there’s one to first not in time great effort there

oh he’s really working him away this at bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield let’s go let’s go let’s go there’s a swing and a drive pulls it in on the warning track so one hit is all they get on to inning number four it’s the a’s three and the yankees won back in the bronx john chi with chris singleton and set to lead off the fourth tyler

it’s just been an impressive outing so far continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down that’s what’s been key and now one and two
that’s a really good take right there slider down and in very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with that’s to third and that chance handled tosses to first one out in the bottom of the fourth
well he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution
and next for new york jazz chisum jr and that one is downstairs and that is ball one
the yankees down by a pair we’re here in the bottom of the fourth right through there for a strike two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with a punch out the only guy in the lineup with that strike out but you can’t get too relaxed you still got to make good pitches to get him out

boo over 80% of his first pitches are strikes you’re doing that you could have a really good day out there on the mound off the plate inside and now it’s even one and one that one way inside [Music] come on that one just misses the outside corner and now it’s filled up three and two good played appearance there able to take the walk
well two out walks are never good especially when you’re trying to get back into that dug out but he’s still in a good spot he’s just got to refocus and deal with the bottom of this order

step off throw to first and he’s back in on a dive that’s hard hit on the line and he makes the catch and that will end the inning one left for the yankees and it remains a 3-1 ball game back here in new york and the batter now denzel clark you talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list free back to work yeah we go beyond just the you know fielding percentage and you know what it looks like but the ability to have a range and you know close holes that you know are normally there against an average defender but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness next offering is in for a strike
hugan the one thing about that is speed never goes into slump and defense shouldn’t either hittingwise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way and this is what this guy does and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again [Music] next offering misses down and away that one misses so a lead off walk
well he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot hitter didn’t offer at it now he has somebody to worry about over at first

well he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test this looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup so the lineup flips over lawrence butler will hit next he’s two for two and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter

you know these yankees just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one

and he’s registered three ks in this one frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and i’m sure that’s gonna sit on for a little while
you want to be ready to hit the fast ball sometimes you can overthink things and i think that was the case right there

well they had the chance of turning two right there but i don’t think he got a good grip on the ball as he tried to transfer from glove to throwing hand they say you can’t assume a double play i beg to differ at the big league level but it’s going to be ruled as a fieldielder’s choice first offering and it just misses come on yankees and another ball
running that good fast ball up on the hitters inside if nothing else keeps him from diving out over the plate to get those arms extended on the pitch away swing in a miss and it’s two and one he got away with one there but he knows he can’t go into that spot very often against a guy like this fouls one off two and two man at first one away swing and a miss strike three that one came in at 99 gets talked about a lot but in a good high fast ball in a two strike situation it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate having a good grip on the baseball those high fast balls they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate so very difficult to get the barrel on it yankees that’s to third and it stays fair lead runner to second with two gone couple of hits in a row for him here just found a way to slap that ball down the third baseline that’s really excellent back control and it kind of goes back to all those drills you see hitters do off the tee where it’s placed in different spots that was just nice
