and we’ll be back for the first pitch right after this Chicago White Sock just about set and getting the start for the White Socks adrien Hower what do we have on him
well coming into this game hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher so it just shows you how effective he’s been he’s been able to move his pitches around add and subtract change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball we’ll see what he’s got in this one swinging a foul straight back up and in and a count even one and one eight back door him with the breaking ball just got the corner there’s nothing you can really do with that fouls that off to the left and will do it again that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was switch through that one it’s a strike out you’re usually going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side but that pitch really got in on him right there i mean that’s a wellthrown pitch tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball he swings and fouls one off close one doesn’t get the call and one and one and right back to the mound tosses to first two away here in the top of the first

well he’s an important part of this lineup for sure i mean there’s no doubt about it boo it’s somebody that they try to feed off of he does a lot of things you know very well up there at the plate he’s got a presence about him and you know he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat pay Smith the next to hit takes outside two outs base is empty swing and a ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going for Josh Naylor

yeah and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road sometimes you know it’s just a matter of luck it’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field don’t know what it is but I know this he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one

yeah could build an i5 win farm with this lineup the way these players swing and miss i don’t know exactly what it is is I mean they’re still professional hitters but it’s just been up and down the lineup this year just swinging and missing clearly they got to make some adjustments major changes are needed because these players aren’t going anywhere they continue to have the trouble they’re having making contact miguel Vargas batting with one down takes a strike gets him to chase after that one [Music] swing and a ball lifted left field stretches out and holds it in got to love the over the shoulder catch i tell you what those are really fun to make

my drop the runner at first with two gone swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes that’s out number three so one left for the White Socks scoreless after one here on the south side au Suarez up to hit now suarez suarez working on a massive campaign right now putting up some big home run numbers hower back to work well we’ve seen him collect some impressive power this season and there’s still a lot of time to go if he can keep up this pace he’s on we could be in for something really special

yeah it seems that way you know guys they can come out feel good but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch they’re not trusting their stuff
and it is two and one well he’s been good for the most part is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit
no partner every pitcher is a little different i I liken it to you sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show uh so perhaps it’s the same with him nobody really wants their rhythm broken up but sometimes they need a little pickme up
runner on at first with one gone and now the center fielder Alec Thomas ball one there [Music] [Music] and another ball now moved to first and he’s back in on a dive man at first one away next offering is in for a strike nasty 20 slider there for a strike that tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch [Music] swings and hits one in the air out towards right field taylor pulls that one down two away now jose Herrera now the Dback’s catcher Jose Herrera way to go chick swing tried to hold up now it appeal to third no swing gary Simmons with the call this one in the dirt one run across in the frame so far here in the top of the second next offering is fouled back up the middle and that one handled steps on the bag for the force third out daxs get one on the solo jack it’s an early one- nothing lead you’re dialed into the show back here on the south side here’s the center fielder Luis Robert Jr robert the native of Cuba signed with the White Socks in May of 2017 a little bit high maybe ball one instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied them up a little bit slightly up slightly in the one-1 is fouled off
pretty good pitch there to take a rip at he wants to get his arms extended he likes the ball away from him a little bit just not able to square it up

naylor and he takes it himself for the out second baseman and here is Sosa to the plate swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side that’ll find the stands yo one pop foul out of play off to the right and that one is lifted in the air gritic and that’s the third out we played two innings it’s one to nothing on to the third inning now it’s the shortstop heraldo Pomo the short stop takes a ball [Music] and that one fouled off and a pitch and that’s down and away swings through for the K couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strike out now up next for Arizona Ilaro Vargas and first offering is fouled off [Music] hey out of bounds right side sosa now the throw to first on the run nicely done for the out pay Smith the next to hit one for one with a single so far all right Chicago and there’s a foul ball [Music] two outs that one not close

one of the things about that two-out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of it naylor takes a ball as he stands in for the second time six straight outside the strike zone that one’s spoiled and the count now two and one fast is outside smith leads off first with two down to the inning and Naylor swings through that one 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitter’s got to stay focused on the pitch fouls it back with two strikes swinging a foul ball at the plate they’ll do it again good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat so now two on

yeah Boo that’s about as good as it gets you’ll see the hardest throwing infielders reach 90 plus on throws across the diamond so he’s pretty much right there with the best infield arms in the game that was a rocket of a throw right there michael A taylor getting ready to hit in there at the knees for a strike
one’s the count swaging a ball hit out towards left center field makes a nice running catch and there’s two away
oh those can be pretty fun as an outfielder got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down nothing better than that you feel like a wide receiver playing football my draw batting for the second time and that’s strike one was good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout that misses the zone going to count one and two that’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count

Gritic gritic in his 11th season 33 years old he joined the team as a free agent you know these Dbacks doing a great job Boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him he’s only given up one run but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense
now the left fielder you know sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today and first pitch fastball is in for a strike [Music] and a base hit right there so they get a man aboard with a one out single couldn’t have timed it up any better than that that’s about as textbook as it gets got his stride and load out of the way early he stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front man that was like he was in the cage hitting off a tea alec Thomas now
breaking ball inside and it’s one and0 swings and sends a rocket to right taylor makes the play and there’s two down man that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process he did everything right right there nothing to show for it but in your mind you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat so two down now and here is Jose Herrera swing and a miss as he was late
in the on deck circle you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count

probably the best one we have seen throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser
ah that’s strike three and the third out so we take a break one left for Arizona but they still lead it one- nothing and welcome back to the ballpark now the number two hitter Andrew Benendi Benendi that’s in there that’s strike one you know these White Socks as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate they’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs can they turn that around and stay within the zone we’ll see but I think they have to slashes this one and it could be trouble around first heading for two and the tying runs at second base with a double and man I’ll tell you a line drive like that into the gap just feels so good it’s feedback that you have everything on time and in control from start to finish with your swing runner in scoring position no outs miguel Vargas steps to the plate for the White Socks and that one fouled off well here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get going turned on but foul wide of third [Applause] that one missed man oh man i don’t know how you take that pitch that’s as close as it gets now a fly ball to right center thomas sizing it up squeezes it grer tags at second and he makes it up to third with one away kyle Teal steps to the plate for the White Socks
you have to stay disciplined in these at bats try not to chase a strike out here is the last thing you want and fouled off white Socks down a run late swing fouled to the left nope that’s inside growl ball right side vargas slinging it to first in time there you go tie game that’s situational hitting right there good job of putting the ball in play and now it’s Luis Robert robert Keener and a good fast ball to start him off that’s strike one
the baseball’s coming out of his hand very well he’s been able to paint all four corners but really good ride at the top of the zone hitters have to respect that very difficult pitch to hit out to short perdomo throws to first that’s the inning so it’s one run one hit no errors and no one left onto the top of the fifth we go all tied 1-1 [Music] we go to the top of the fifth here’s the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter heraldo Purdomo hower back to work that one outside and that is ball one action in the pen down there grant Taylor getting loose out there number 38 getting cranked up as well and that’s him for a strike this game has been so tight feels like the next team to score will win it all right off the mark there now two balls in a strike and there’s a ball
oh they have had a hard time scoring in this one the pitcher out there on the mound wants to keep attacking make sure that they don’t get any confidence in for a strike now it’s three and two oh boy that was the pitch 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast ball and a 3-2 it’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahead run
what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that walk

he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball the old one curve ball over for a called strike the two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here [Applause] and a swing and a miss he’s notched four strikeouts now well that seemed to be over as soon as it started three pitch strikeout you got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off extend that at bat [Music] now it’s the DH Pave Smith and the first pitch misses for ball one and a base hit throws to second he’s in there
nice line drive to the pole side right there but he didn’t spin off of it that’s the key you still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that a chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run here’s Josh Naylor he’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup ball one no strikes the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone they’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot just off the inside edge
tough spot right here a couple runners on two ball count you can’t nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch if you leave something out over the plate it’s going to bring in some runs swaging a ball hit out towards left center field brings it in and there are two down [Music] aueno Suarez up to the plate now gets the call and that’s strike one pomo at second smith at first two out of the inning swang and a line drive and that’s a base hit into right field ru at third puts on the brakes base is now loaded with two away seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there that pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay now the White Sox manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen adrien Howser done for the day and he leaves with the bases loaded so he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him grant Taylor takes over on the mound still pretty early in the ball game so this bullpen has some work ahead of him best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him so up next Randall Gritic he’s already homerred in this game first pitch doesn’t find the zone fast ball for a strike one and one and a count one and two stays alive and delivers outside this guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat he just battles up there he doesn’t take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away on the inside corner for called strike three a lot of adrenaline we can see it right there and sometimes you just got to let it out that’s an outstanding job of taking that executing and getting out of a tough inning here on the south side bottom of the inning and here’s the first baseman Ryan Nota [Music] and the first pitch misses for ball one you know these White Socks just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game chasing pitches has been a big part of the story we’ve seen it quite a bit today it’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group to the right side Vargas onto first

now that second base Lenny Sosa
and up next for Chicago Lennin Sosa flyed to right his first time and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game on the ground and foul ball this one chopped to first naylor takes it himself and a couple of quick outs
now batting third base here’s Josh Rojos grounded out his first time up and when you talk about elite defensive third baseman this guy is at the top of the list first pitch just misses
this guy plays third base like he’s a shortstop and he welcomes the difficult play can throw from so many different angles and makes really tough plays look very easy so what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite
well Boo one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet does he have good feet is he able to quickly react and when you have good feet you’ve got soft hands and soft-hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy

Watton take your base well that’s a really good take right there and that’s just mentally prepared knowing that if it’s not on a TE you’re going to take that pitch because you still have one more strike to work with not easy to lay off but he did an excellent job in that plate appearance taylor in the box now no balls in a strike
well he’s been incredibly efficient in this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point go [Applause] two gone but the go-ahead run is at first last half of inning number five cut out and miss struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one so no runs no hits no errors and one left on five innings complete all tied 1-1 back here on the south side start of the six John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading off number 13 all right so let’s go first off and it just misses activity in the pen for the White Socks brandon Eer the rookie left-hander appears to be getting going wilson the right-hander loosening up as well and that’s in for a strike and the count one and one next offering is fouled back [Music] and now two and two
and that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now next offering upstairs chases the fast up the ladder struck him out thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we’re seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger and now the center fielder Alec Thomas swing and a highf fly ball left field and Ben intendi to make the grab jose Herrera stands in now for the Diamondbacks go for two in this one there’s the strike at the knees swing and a miss and the count is 0 and two

well walks have certainly been an issue for him this season so we’ll see what kind of command he has josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks and that one wrapped foul wilson a 63 righty 30 years old now and he was drafted in the eighth round back in 2018 just missed i got one ball one strike out towards left center benendi sizes this one up and out number one on the grab auheno Suarez now at the plate one for three right through there for a strike that one outside and now it’s even one and one

great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it down outside and that is ball four and with two outs the go-ahehead run is at second base
oh that could be a big walk in this ball game moves the go-ahead run into scoring position so some pressure pitches coming up in this next AB thomas in the box now takes strike one first and second two down pitch misses one and one homeplayed umpires try to tighten things up a little bit and a count one and two
i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up two outs swings and lines a base hit into left field heading for the plate he’ll score they take the lead it’s 2-1 well he comes through clutch with the RBI single that was big nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line you know hitters they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game but right there it did and he did it perfectly and now here is Jose Herrera just missed yeah that’s fouled off [Music] pitch misses outside and it’s two and one
two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them and that is cut out and miss and the count is two and two strikes him out with the sweeper and it worked sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that’s okay as long as he’s getting results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam and we’re back set for the last half of the seventh and now Kyle Teal swinging a foul out of play [Music] swing and a miss he was late strike two movement in the bullpen kevin Ginkle up and throwing for manager Tory Lavello scott also getting ready looking to get the tying run on base swings and misses struck him out a big first out here in the seventh via the punch out yeah it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this so a strikeout really puts them on their heels

these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations and now here’s the big center fielder Luis Robert this one in the air right field gritic settles under this one and there’s two down now batting first so up next for Chicago Ryan Nota has grounded out a couple of times and that one upstairs ball one check swing called strike swings through that one clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider hey you can’t fault him for his commitment now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes way inside let’s straighten him up a little bit swing and a miss struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three shy socks held in check here they’re down two to one brandon Eiser gets the call from the pen just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game here’s the Diamondbacks leadoff hitter Heraldo Peromo yeah the first offering a fast ball for a strike swings through that one out in front that time line drive caught that screen right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well i know it didn’t produce a hit but he made solid contact and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate ildaro Vargas digs in now that one finds the zone that’s strike one no need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes it’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch one down base is empty foul ball had a good eye there
too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball but for whatever reasons he let it go by he’s still in the at bat i don’t think he’ll let the next one go [Music] that one misses the countdown now two and two and they’ll do it again spoils that one and it remains two and two

now back and next is the Diamondbacks DH Pave Smith ripped to short snagged on a bounce in plenty of time to first and Arizona is set down one two three diamondbacks down quickly but they still lead it two to one here on the south side bottom of the eighth here’s the second baseman Lennin Sosa ginkle back to work and the first pitch misses for ball one the Diamondbacks with some movement in the pen shelby Miller the anchor of the staff is getting ready to close this one out scott also throwing late swing fouled off and a base hit right there and the tying run is on with a leadoff single everything came together for him got a fast ball middle of the plate jumped all over it absolutely smoked that ball now the third baseman Josh Rohox swinging a ground ball towards first but foul [Applause] that one backed up the middle and it gets through throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out well that at bat had a lot of pressure riding on it so really great job coming through right there it’s got to feel good once you get the ball by the pitcher there’s a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground balls so a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit and now a crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base hit and now Michael A taylor and a base hit right there oh he botches it still finds a way to get off the throw save at the plate and the run scores all the way from second it’s 22 such great concentration everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing and there he doesn’t try to do too much now the Diamondbacks manager is out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen kevin Ginkle done for the afternoon and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout back with a new arm after a quick break now on the mound for the Diamondbacks Taylor Scott
and we all know about his slider it’s just filthy man and one of the better ones in the game I’d say spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton and here is Chase Maid late swing fouled all back and forth we go a seessaw battle in the late stages of this one and that one gets past the catcher so on the wild pitch two guys advance well Boo it’s already been a tough start to this inning as it is and that wild pitch is going to make things even tougher two men in the scoring position now still with nobody out so this really becomes a strikeout situation on the mound outside low and that’s ball two he’s got a base open so the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked comes the two and he chases that one and that is a big first out oh that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him the chase that’s just a bad approach right there either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation but man really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch andrew Benendi up to the plate golden opportunity right here so now here’s the DH miguel Vargas 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout that one hooked foul so they’re all loaded up and that is out of play way outside the count one and two o2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat [Music] in the air right side gritic squeezes it here comes the runner from third cut off now a throw home not in time he beat it and they’ve got the lead sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things keep it simple runner third less than two outs put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly and next to him for the socks Kyle Teal in there at the knees and it’s 0 and one taylor the lead runner out at second benendi on first with two down swing and a fly ball well struck left field in position makes the catch and that will end the inning a couple of runs in the inning puts them ahead through eight full it’s the White Socks three and the Diamondbacks two back now and on the mound the closer Jordan Leisure he comes in with a chance for his second save of the season number 49 well one-run game josh Naylor stands in now for the Diamondbacks 0 for three in this one out towards right center field robert on the move and there’s one down he was all over that first pitch fast but just barely missed it man this guy was ready to hit
he’s two outs away here’s the third baseman Au Heno Suarez tap foul at the plate 01 now swings through that one for strike two
one- run game here in the top of the ninth that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fells that fast ball back here’s the O2 ground ball left side rojas throws on to first and they’re down to their last out
well he didn’t recognize change up earlier enough got out in front a little bit rolled over on it and beat it into the ground randall Gritic stands in now for the Diamondbacks late on that fast ball i think he was sitting off speed there [Music] and a foul ball the Dbacks down to their final strike hit to right and that should do it and he’s got it ball game and the White Socks hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game all these players were able to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth and just cruise to this win getting those final three outs in the top of the ninth excellent job of securing your home field and keeping the fans in the ball game all the way to the end nice W all the way around heat [Music] heat heat heat [Music]
