🔴LIVE🔴St Louis Cardinals VS Cleveland Guardians /June 27 /MLB The show 25

the ready to go and towing the slab Tanner by and singing he likes pitching at home
well truly for him there is no place like home he’s been so dominant here and as a teammate you expect him when pitching at home this year to go out and dominate just as he has the fans expected and I think everyone around here knows that he’s a good pitcher even though we don’t see the same splits on the road we’re going to start to see that translate as well
ready to go here’s the left fielder Brendan Donovan that one at 95 missed up top and away we go this afternoon first pitch 1205 that one finds the zone and a count even one and one that’s down and in lifted in the air out to left quan
calls it in and there’s one away here’s a Cardinals lineup now
and Chris this group has been struggling to put up runs lately well they haven’t been on base a ton and even when they are they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base so they need a player or two to really step up have some quality at bats hit according to the situation and sort of break out of this i think if they do the rest of this lineup will follow bunting and it’s in the air carous and there’s two down well he gave the bunt a shot there but not able to execute yeah I think he rushed it a little bit and when guys rush can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player and now the right fielder Alec Burlson edge of the zone for a strike go and one two out space is empty at 96 that pitch is in for a strike well he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone he has plenty of options right here he can go up he can go away he can add velocity he can subtract foul ball still 0 and two
i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up
on the ground right side he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it one two three go to Cardinals now the Guardians will get their shot still scoreless it’s Major League Baseball on the show back here in Cleveland and getting to start Riley O’Brien what do we need to know here
well he’s been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone so we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one bottom of the first and now here is Steven Quan that’s in there 0 and one and a pitch inside almost got him to the right side and that chance handled buyers to first on the run pretty nice play there here’s the Guardians lineup now not the highest team batting average for this squad they’re down towards the bottom of the league in total hits and Singi because of that they don’t score a ton yeah and Boo I’m looking for a little better performance out of them today hey I mean if they’re going to be dangerous if they’re going to be able to create scoring opportunities they’re going to have to start making some individual adjustments a lot of players in this lineup probably aren’t happy with how they’ve hit the ball so far so today’s a chance to get something going
kyle Manzardo batting with one down takes a strike and that’s in for a strike and the count is 0 and two
man 91 on the slider right there that’s a hard one that’s a lowend fast ball for some pitchers right side and it goes just foul one out base is empty comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt pah down to first got him two gone after the strikeout here’s Jose Ramirez what a season it’s been for him he has supplied a lot of power and that average and there’s the strike next offering is down low that one almost got him straighten him up a little bit next offering is outside there’s a swing and a drive this one looks like trouble makes the turn and heads for second and he starts his afternoon off right with a double man those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever such a good feeling when you connect and it jumps off your bat like that you’re thinking double at the very least put a great swing on it and man he wasn’t fooled at all and now it’s the switch hitter Carlos Santana just missed
well you always want to come out in the first inning try to put something up on the board it’s a big two-out double right there see if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board that’s in for a strike well he’s realizing out there on the mound that he’s got to settle in pretty quickly or else he’s going to get hit hard in this first inning that one’s in there now he’s in a one-two hole well they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting and now the count is even he’s dealing with a great two strike hitter right here the strikeout is not automatic knocks that one away and we’ll do it again next pitch is outside lane Thomas in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here man on second two down swang at a highf fly ball well struck way back there and that ball is out of here home run number 10 on the year it’s two nothing he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer
and you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat he’s that confident [Applause] knew what pitch he wanted to hit spent on some other pitches in this at bat was very patient and it paid off so two down and up next for Cleveland Lane Thomas on the inside corner for a strike that’s inside and one and one check swing did he go no he didn’t
whoa will recognize that pitch just in time able to keep those hands back klo cleanly still finds a way to get off a throw but no chance to get him it’s an infield single third base
well you can’t give him two errors on that play but that’s pretty much what it looked like tried to stay with it after the bobble and he might have pulled it off with a good throw but it’s very easy to rush the throw when you don’t field it cleanly a lot of times guys don’t have a good grip on it and I think that was the case right there so a man at first so in now for Cleveland Daniel Schnemi pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter and he’ll one and a curve misses outside that one drilled left field that’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner coming home he’ll score easily stringing them together that’s three hits in a row anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there
so runner at second two down b Naylor at the plate now just missed laboring here about to throw his 30th pitch of the inning next offering way off the plate
well no need to go right at this guy first base is open he can hurt you so make him expand his zone if he doesn’t give him a walk yeah there’s the strike doublebarreled action in the bullpen sunny Gray getting ready to go palante getting loose as well rolled slowly to first contrarus handles throws to first and that’ll keep more runs from coming in inning over three runs for him here and they move ahead second inning coming up from Progressive Field guardians three and the Cardinals nothing here in Cleveland here’s the veteran first baseman Wilson Contrus by back to work
well after putting up a nice inning on offense got some runs across this is where you look for the starter to go out there have a shut down inning don’t give that other team any hope uh you just hope that he can get through this inning get the bats back up there while they’re hot
and now it’s even up gary Simmons our played umpire today sort of has a reputation as a pitcher umpire
yeah a little bit of a wider zone than most I’d say and a wide zone can be tough to deal with as a hitter because you have to start expanding what you’re looking for covering both sides and with the stuff pitchers have today you’re just not going to have a lot of success singi what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters
i’d say off the plate away and down and why those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again as the game has moved along we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires i’ve been in clubouses where they have pictures of all four umpires nicknames hometowns and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit that’s great hauls it in and there’s one away batting here’s Nolan
Aronado by the 6’2 righty 26 years old and he was a fifth round pick in 2021 first pitch misses nolan Aronado at the plate aronado guy who delivers big time power at the dish and will probably go down as one of the greatest defensive third baseman of all time and speaking of that defense it’s hard to imagine that in high school Aronado shared the left side of the infield with another elite defender Matt Chapman at El Toro High School in California that one ripped that’s down one hops off the wall throws to second not in time he’s got a double batting six one out runner at second thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals right through there for a strike come on Tanner [Applause] ball one there
i don’t think he was trying to miss by that much in an 02 count just tried to overthrow that pitch man at second stays alive that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going
well he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there not sure exactly with the timing sometimes you get a backup breaking ball you’re expecting it to make its move at the end it never does and you’re tied up
swings through that one it’s a strikeout thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we’re seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger here’s Nolan Gorman and takes low for ball one swing and a ball driven out to center that’s back there forget it his seventh home run of the season and they throw a pair on the board it’s 3-2 boo i wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here but it had just enough behind it for the homer what an attempt at the wall though he really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back so two away with nobody on and stepping in for the Cardinals Pedro Pahes delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 that one fouled hard the other way and Gary Simmons punches him out that’s a strikeout two runs for St louis on this blast it’s now a 32 ball game you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show bottom half of inning number two stepping up for the Guardians Gabrielle Arias headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball and he grounds one to the right side the throw to first that’s one out in the bottom of the second batting ninth second base on And now it’s the switch hitting second baseman Anel Martinez [Music] pitch is in there strike one and that’s in the dirt [Applause] inside just missed first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count bounced and that got the pitcher yet he beats the throw he’s saved and now they’ll hustle out to check on him that was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee
yeah clearly in some real pain but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to it’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue
so the batting order turns over now the left fielder Steven Quan grounded out his first time chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out well struck right field this one could be trouble lead runner makes the turn at second rounds third headed for the plate he’ll score no waiting around right there he was ready to swing it on the first pitch solid swing from start to end on time with everything really good balance nice extension and he met it out front for the line drive knock kyle Manzardo digs in for the Guardians 0 for one so far that’s a slider for a strike
yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits [Music] next offering is fouled back singi one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore so when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that as plus value
absolutely if he’s doing damage now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out then it’s a different story but yeah if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence 100% now it’s Jose Ramirez doubled in his first AB yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end sneaks through base headed for the plate the throw in but it’s offline and they’re up by three he was all over that one there’s nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield was ripped caught out in front and didn’t get under it like he would have liked but definitely put a good swing on it carlos Santana digs in for the Guardians he’s already homered in this game there’s a strike one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter o’brien over to first ramirez back on a dive ramirez the runner at first with two gone a little bit high maybe and the count is one and one yeah and I figured you would get Kate say into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true and that one ripped into right burlson makes the catch that is the inning they get two runs on three hits no errors and one left we play two full it’s the Guardians five and the Cardinals two back now at Progressive Field here’s a speed threat garrett Hson shortened a bunt and missed it it’s 0 and one next offering misses down and away trying to bunt his way on and foul ball next offering is downstairs keeps the atbat going with a foul ball swing and a miss struck him out
wow just great bite to that slider broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn’t hold up the swing you know as a hitter that pitch is really hard to take and there’s just not much you can do with it you know that but you don’t want to get rung up by the umpire here’s the left fielder Brendan Donovan he’s 0 for one that one finds the zone and that is strike one
well the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there and have a real quick inning get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot
one down base is empty and that’s off the outside edge one and one all right Singy trivia time back when this ballpark opened 1994 one future Hall of Famer hit the first triple in the park and another hit the first homer by a Cleveland player think you know what they were
okay I know that Ken Griffy Jr hit the first triple here but first homer for Cleveland give me a hint switch hitter that’s all you’re getting
oh dude eddie Murray no doubt bam and there’s a rocket into the outfield now he’ll turn for second the throw in but he’s in there easily love how he let that ball travel trusted his hands nice job of going the other way one out runner at second mason Win getting ready to hit first time up was a pop out and that one fouled off [Music] in the dirt runner at second here one gone the shorts stop takes a ball swing and a fly ball well struck left field quan sizes this one up makes the grab two down just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left [Music] that one is absolutely belted back there say goodbye to that one he’ll touch them all it’s 54 he only needed one swing to square it up
not wasting any time in that at bat boo aggressive and it paid off took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall oh I thought for a second he brought it back out there too he gave it a great effort but you know those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it here’s Contraras now 0 for one with a fly out to center and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike check swing called strike meanwhile activity in the bullpen hunter Gatis a right-hander with big strikeout stuff is getting it fired up allard warming up as well two outs and that’s ruled a swing it’s a strikeout but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer it’s down to one at 54 it’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show bottom half of the third and they bring in a new pitcher Sunny Gray just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game well one-run game here’s Lane Thomas you think back to 2017 and Cleveland set a major league record 22 consecutive wins they had it was capped off with a 10 in walk-off win pretty amazing streak and a big part of the history of this yard boo and I remember early in that season covering them and talking to their staff and players and they didn’t feel like they had really clicked yet now when I went back to do some research looking at metrics like base runs I realized they weren’t scoring runs at the rate in which the data was saying they should be at so the numbers were saying it was just a matter of time until they would take off little did we know that it would convert into a 22game winning streak and it took the baseball world by storm
i love when you talk nerd to me come back to the mound on to first one gone bottom of the third inning now batting here’s the third base Daniel first offering and it just misses right through there for a strike here’s a rocket out to left puts it away for the out and there’s two away
not fooled at all right there he was clearly all over it but sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone you’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes naylor in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike swung on popped up left side wind makes the catch and over nothing do for the Guardians there as they hold on to a 54 lead welcome back and now on the mound to start the fourth Hunter Gatis he comes on for the 35th time this year
got it here’s Nolan Aronado there you see his May and June numbers so far let’s go Cleveland fast ball for a strike at 95 the guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception he knew right away it was an off speed pitch next offering in there for a strike and that is strike two [Applause] got him swinging it’s a strike out slider got him for strike three well when you throw the same pitch back to back that’s how you want to do it set him up in the strike zone then extend a little bit from there and see if you can get him to chase nicely done with the slider right there so now here’s the DH Thomas Jay-Z breaking ball in there for a strike one down base is empty highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side
well he gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone i’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again holding on to a one-run lead top half of inning number four strike three and that’s two in a row chance to strike out the side now you talk about the benefits the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves knowing that they can miss the bat tell you what that’s huge and can change the ball game nolan Gorman digs in now he’s already homered here in this one and a fast ball clips the outside corner for a strike oh one down swinging a foul back that’s out of play fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts offense held in check there we’re midway in the fourth it’s the Guardians five and the Cardinals four and we’re back john Chami and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the fourth Gabrielle Aras let’s go and that skips in the dirt
you know these Guardians doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side it’s tough to remember the times they’ve actually swung and missed at a pitch because it really hasn’t happened they’ve made contact on nearly 100% of their swings cut on and lifted in the air burlson has this one sized up puts it away for the out
now batting second so up next Anel Martinez reached on an infield single his first time [Music] sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit and now the lineup turns over with one away now batting leftielder so the Guardians lineup turns over steven Quan will hit next first pitch and he just misses martinez the base runner at first with one out next offering is in for a strike popped up win and there are two outs now batting right fielder Kyle Manzardo now the number two hitter Kyle Manzardo full for two in this one rip towards third they get the force that ends the frame one left for the Guardians they lead it 5-4 we’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth colobby Allard these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations [Music] pah in the box now takes strike one and that is out of play battling here as he fouls it away looking to get the tying run on base and that one upstairs ball one
pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there if you’re smart to look for something down in the zone but not too far don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another and the one two misses to even the count gets a piece and stays alive that one misses and the count is filled up
really good take especially with two strikes that one misses so a lead off walk
well that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk very gritty
here’s Garrett Hampson struck out swinging his first time fun attempt popped up and there’s one down now the left fielder Brendan Donovan one for two and the pitch a little bit low ball one way to lay off that pitch down swing at a highf fly ball that’s out to center two down [Applause] now up for St louis mason win right now they’re looking for something hit hard into the gaps give them an opportunity with two outs to score that run from first there’s the strike this guy’s seen two change ups in a row could be a little vulnerable for a fast ball right here on the inside corner for called strike three he’s in a tough spot had to make a great pitch did it got the strike out gets out of the jam clearly he’s happy with those results and welcome back to the ballpark we head to the bottom of the fifth now it’s the Guardians DH jose Ramirez gray back to work and first offering is fouled off you know these Guardians simply put are producing a lot of quality swings we’ve heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one haven’t we i mean they’ve launched six hits at 90 plus exit velocity and that doesn’t happen by accident
that catches the outside corner going to count one and two that one just misses
i don’t know how you take that one after the called strike on the corner just a little bit off the edge the next offering misses three and two now ah that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning so here’s the cleanup hitter Carlos Santana one of the rare guys at first base that you almost think defense first he is that good with the glove you’re talking about top of the list elite defensive first baseman first baseman are involved in just about every single play so when you have somebody so solid over there uh you can breathe a little easier and misses inside the other thing about an elite defensive first baseman like him it it just instills a ton of confidence in those guys playing third and short that have to make those long tough throws at times and he just handles them so well so he really makes the entire infield better with his glove man that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process he did everything right right there nothing to show for it but in your mind you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat foul ball there you’re not just talking about the ability to pick Chris one of the things about him the range is impressive as he’s able to go to his right and get to those balls in the hole checks over to first back safely and a foul ball remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder good instincts not great speed and that’s downstairs and outside man at first one away and downstairs good job to fight that one off just misses with that one and a base hit they fired in quickly so it’s first and second with only one away well a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win first and second one out daniel Schneean digs in for the Guardians
we just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap he’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots ramirez the lead runner at second thomas over at first with one away and a foul ball cleveland up a run looking for more fouled off and they’ll do it again cleveland andy O2 hacks and misses it’s a strikeout now betting
and next is the Guardians catcher Bone Naylor taken high in the draft he’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level
first pitch not close let’s go and there’s the strike that catches the zone for a strike and a count one and two
well this is a higher leverage spot and I love the way that he’s turned things around he’s got two outs now ahead in this count and he can pretty much dictate what’s going to happen next in terms of the pitch sequence swing and he breaks his bad wind makes the grab and that will end the inning welcome back and here comes the closer Emanuel Class now this is an extremely confident pitcher he loves the pressure actually likes the oneun game better than a comfortable threerun save opportunity because that’s when he pitches his best burlson the next to hit takes high for ball one and a count one and two that one missed triple digits on that last pitch
boogie just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count off at two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone and up to hit is Wilson Contrarus
three pitch strikeout last time up got to put up more of a fight in this one and that drops in for a strike squangan belted into the corner but foul pitch misses there and it’s one and two man oh man i don’t know how you take that pitch that’s as close as it gets gets a piece there we’ll do it again the healthy cut tough pitch at 98 but a really good pass at the ball one two to Contrarus that one outside now two and two got him swinging for the strikeout and they’re down to their last out
this is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer come in and just destroy all hope first two batters two strikeouts see if he can strike out the side one out left for the Cardinals here’s Nolan Aronado that one finds the zone strike one fouled off he was late the Cardinals down to their final strike two down nobody on fights it off you’ll see another [Music] Pitch misses they’re now two balls and two strikes down just misses the mark outside the zone big pitch coming right here last thing he wants to do is put the tying run on base but he can’t groove one either hot shot to third throw to first ball game and the Guardians hold on to win a tight one as this one ends as a one-run ball game
i don’t care if you’re a top team or you’re a middle of the pack team every ball club wants to be dominant at home winning a game like this just helps to boost the confidence and makes you look forward to coming out again for the next one
