Oh that thing is forgot John put yourself on camera and give me the finger How messed up is Oh here he comes Here he comes He’s wearing the right up here John
It’s John He’s back
Show him the finger Yes The best one Yeah So can we get um are we gonna get John’s reaction to the Bruins pick or we just gonna head on for that john will give us live reaction of the Boston Bruins a little bit
We have Sean Shapiro joining us from his home studio in suburban Michigan
We have Craig Lewig in his usual seat although saying that the cushion falls
Yeah I it feels like it’s sitting up a little higher like some big guys weren’t sitting in the lower big guys use And then we have Sam Nestler over here who has already looked at several squirrels
Yeah
And who knows how quickly we lose his attention
We’ll get it going here tonight I’m Owen Duke Thanks for joining us once again And
the Islanders are on the clock
We are here for the full duration
I wonder who they’re going to take
of the NHL first round of the draft It’s in Los Angeles Sean I want to start with you if we can hear you
before this gets started The big talk is of course it’s a decentralized draft Every team is in their own war room We can actually see the Dallas group in let’s see second row three in on the little grid that we’re watching on ESPN right now
How quickly is this going to change this format back to the other one is it next year
yeah So that was actually a discussion point today after Gary B Yep
Keep going Sean No they can hear you fine We just can’t I that was a discussion point today when um Gary Bman held his kind of state of the league availability today They talked with the NHLPA Um obviously CBA got extended That’s a big deal But um 20 the vote to go to the decentralized draft was 26 to I believe it was 266 in favor of this And so in order for us to get back to a full in-person draft undeentralized um essentially it has to be I believe it has to be a majority vote So if there was six teams that were wanted to stay in person before the Vegas draft and I know there’s some others that changed their mind after the Vegas draft it’s basically getting that threshold to 17 teams wanting to uh want wanting to be back to our old setup I think that there’s there’s a strong push for it Um but the question is is there going to be enough to get to the majority and I hope personally that we are in that spot because it’s just a the decentralized thing and as fun as this is with everything like that like last year’s event in in Vegas at the sphere was tremendous Um I’ve been at every inerson draft since 2016 since 2017 It’s one of the great events for the league So I hope we get back there and it’s just going to be we hope tonight goes well for our shortterm value So we’re not here for five effing hours but we also don’t want it to go too well where the teams decide that they want to do this in the future So that’s that’s what we want tonight
Sean is there a anything to the traction of people suggesting that because they’re in their own war rooms that there will be more trade activity at this draft than when they’re all together because for some reason that’s easier than walking over and talking to another GM in person I actually I like for me there’s the psychology part of it when you’re in your own war room you are on your own time and schedule right when everyone is crisscrossing interacting I I would actually push and maybe question the other way where you might not think about like obviously the Sergeev deal happened at the draft last year and it’s not like Utah and Tampa weren’t going to make that deal if it wasn’t in person but if you’re a team and you’re thinking about other assets and things you might go you run into like I’ve been in those conversations You run into someone in the meal room you run into an assistant GM somewhere like it opens up more conversation between the teams in my in my personal view when you have everyone in the same spot So um I I think it’s it’s just a way to try to spin it honestly where people like “Oh this could lead to more activity.” I I don’t know Like I I just I I I think you can you can slice it one way or the other for when it comes to how much activity will be at the draft and and how much people move up and down to the draft tonight is going to be honestly how many how many how much are people willing to buy what the Islanders are trying to do It has nothing to do with them being in person or not It’s just what is uh is is that are the 16th and 17th picks that they picked up in the trade for Dobson are those really worthy enough to get them up to number four where they’re trying to to get James Hagens those things aren’t going to be determined by the Islanders being in a war room at UBC Arena or being in the same spot
Sean what well you miss in in this format is in the other format and you can watch what GMs are talking to which other GM and then you kind of see what’s going on and you’re going “Wait a second they got the fourth round pick and they’re over here talking to him.” And then what happens is when they leave there you kind of get up and you kind of intersect them Then you go “Listen are you guys chatting about that i got this for you.” That’s what you meant
Well and how about the other side of it because I was going to ask you this exact thing When you’re all together and you start to v to watch other guys moving around it almost creates this rumor mill whether you know what’s going on or not You start to get antsy Oh he’s talking to this guy or you know
and and for me it’s a better it it’s for for the viewers It’s better to to be able to have cameras and you can watch that whole process going on versus having what was it up here whatever you had you see 32
the little grid thing like that That’s a joke that that there there will be no problem with the vote for next year They are going back because from what I understand and Sean correct me if I’m wrong Are how many of the draft eligible players are in Los Angeles tonight
they heard none
They No the players are there
Oh no There’s a couple of them there How many
yeah Yeah They extended invites to 100 So how many 100 players
they extended invites to 100 players How many took that
yeah No they extended the invites But how many at a normal draft not this one Oh at at a normal draft you you’ll have at a normal draft you’ll typically have the league will invite around invite around 150 players at a normal draft and then you have um agents will go and bring their own players right like I’ve been at drafts before where it’s round six and seven and it’s really awkward There’s a kid sitting up in the upper bowl and they announce his name and all of a sudden there’s a big cheer It’s like so for an in-person this draft there’s 100 in the in a typical draft there’s probably about 175 to 180 kids there in person and probably about 5 to 10 of them go without getting drafted It’s really awkward So I like I know I know an agent who I spoke to about he said the one positive of the decentralized draft is he can just give a blanket statement to his players his his clients to not go to the draft
down Bobby
to not go to not go to the draft because you avoid the awkwardness of you’re a fourth or fifth round rated prospect Do we really want to put you on in that through that so
hey Sean can you see that we have a counter now ls is on the clock on the screen
I have I have one Mine mine is gonna mine We got LS beers one
You know is talking Does he have a headset in or something well actually that counter might have an earpiece He’s got a lapel but he is definitely getting booed right now
Well he always gets booed That’s That’s part of the whole appeal of it
He He likes it though
Well the counter is already wrong So why do we have it up there
are you on Well two
No since the show started
Yeah since we started
Your pregaming doesn’t count for this
Oh so do we want Do you want credit for that no I thought you meant the the day when the day started
What about it
do you want it up there
i It’s fine with me I mean uh here’s the funny thing So Sam’s got
No you’re good I was just I was just You’ll appreciate this Sam’s got his laptop on and to avoid having the inability to read it he’s created he’s zoomed in on the screen screen like your text messages when you’re on your motorcycle
See how big he stretched that up so he could actually read it
I still can’t see
All right we do have a super chat So let’s get right to it with our bing bong of the night Yes Garcel can you bring that happiest hour pretzel down here too for us where’s the bing bong
bing bong
Bing Bing bong Do we not have a bing bong
michael Moore Well it didn’t play Michael Moore with a hasten in a 99 cup here Are we still waiting on Brad’s follow-up tweet from last night or that just me sean
I have I have an answer on that Uh so I texted with Brad about
this is by the way president for the stars Brad Albert I I texted with Brad around 5:45 today about the uh or sorry 4:45 today about the whole uh weird Austin Texas expansion team thing which is a complete
Can you give the back hold on Back up because there’s the Brad Albert’s eyeball emoji tweet from yesterday and then what you’re talking you give the backstory of that
So for Brad’s eyeball emoji Yeah We we know Brad as his his does his eyeball emoji when something’s in place and and just for the quick not to bury the lead on it I asked Brad if his eyeball emoji stuff has happened yet and he said it’s still coming tonight and I said great We’ll have something to talk about on the show and he said yeah it’ll be great for your guys show
We’re working
So Brad is
I think mine is better
So So Brad knows that we have a show tonight and he’s going to give us something to talk about hopefully So that’s we’re still waiting We’re still waiting on that Uh what it’ll be is I don’t think it’ll be as exciting as people want it to be but we’ll see
Got to be an outdoor game
You think it’s that
i think it’s an outdoor game That’s just That’s not a That’s not a That’s not a reporting thing That’s just
from what we already heard from Gary from what then Kevin Weekes posted that thing that never led to anything to then I just think that’s what it’s going to be But
well for Oh yeah
You think they’re going to announce something about that
i think it’ll be an outdoor game
New Jersey maybe Could be
Yeah or that’s the other one is like a rebrand or a third jersey which we have this one is now gone right where I don’t know this one blackout jersey
isn’t that gone
yeah technically
out of circulation um looks like the uh oh it’s uh Rick Rick it’s uh Rick’s son Ryan Bonis on the screen right now talk about
for the Islanders here
before we get to some of the other storylines for the stars we want to talk to Luds you do have as you’ve talked about a couple of times connections with the ownership group of the Islanders What do you do you what do you think about where they’re at right now for organizationally
they’re in Long Island Not physically I mean figuratively They’re actually on Long Island Metaphorically speaking
You’re right I’m a writer
You’re right
So but not only not only did they win the draft lottery they
fools me this year
They’re going to take Schaefer
but they’re also they just traded Dobson for two first They get picks They’re they’re trying to move up to get another top 10 pick Where are the Islanders in terms of trying to become a contender again
well if they’re going to move Barcel that that probably doesn’t mean they’re a contender anymore because that’s being thrown out there too Especially by Vancouver
Now they are Now they’re on the clock
Now they’re on the clock Okay
Yeah their clock just started We’re all sitting here because we think they’re going to do something different I just 15 minutes
What are we waiting for
you know what i I think to to answer that question I think they’re kind of stuck in that mushy miller right now because they’re a team that with Pat I think what’s happening is that the new general manager Dar is trying to put himself on the map and he did today by moving some big money out He wasn’t they weren’t going to give him that Um but the kid that they have here um should I give it away or is it already done
well he hasn’t been he hasn’t made the pick but they’re going to take
a man I’m not going to say that they’re going to take Schaefer but I wouldn’t want to say that But
you don’t think they’re going to take like there’s to me there’s no question they’re taking everything’s going to start after three That that that’s what I think Everything’s starting after the three Who do you think the second Oh you mean after
Misa Misha yeah I think that I even think that the three could be in play But but I don’t know Like I said the other day I don’t know a ton about this stuff Just what I’ve heard from other people But it sounds like what they’ve got with Schaefer which again this is the to me it’s kind of and Sean you can you you know way more than this is he kind of going to be can we use a Kale Mar to describe I mean I don’t know who else we’re going to use Marqu Hughes you know he’s a skater
we had our closest comp for our draft guide was we had our closest comp was Mirro Hishkin that was our comp for Miro for for Matthew Schaefer we had shades of Miro Hishkin’s game that is how high we view Matthew Schaefer over at Elite Prospects and how we kind of looked at his game Um I don’t think he’s a macar I don’t think he’s going to have the points of a macar He’s not going to have the points of a Hughes He is way more like Miro when it comes to skating and using that defensively and moving Um so it’s it’s it’s actually a pretty good for us not having anything Stars related to talk about technically with their picks tonight We are talking about players that are like Dallas Stars player here going number one overall It’s also it’s a testament to me right too when you’re when you’re talking about a guy going number one overall as and and hey the compliment is you’re comparing him to me hushkin and I think that’s that’s another kind of that’s a good that’s a positive thing so is the comp
we are obviously behind on you go ahead because we’re streaming live so go ahead is in
you can be our announcer guy for this
yeah oh great the islanders select defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the first overall pick the 2025 whatever sponsor it is NHL draft I don’t know what sp what their sponsor is for the draft this year
Sean we were talking about him a little bit with Steven Ellis
Oh there
Oh look at the
I knew there was something That’s why I was there’s Schaefer
Oh we got a player card I finally heard from him I I really obviously none of us do a lot of prospect viewing and rating were focused more on the NHL guys but Sean from your standpoint like is this guy an absolute no-brainer 1-1 yeah I would it’s it was for us the debate was the only knock on his game was he played 26 games this year So he had the injury
because of the collarbone injury
Yeah Yeah But he got hurt at World Junior He was an absolute stud there Um this is to me this is a franchise defenseman and our our team over at EP We had a little bit of a debate about him and Michael Misa but it was a highly it was it was definitely more of a Schaefer and then a couple people pushing for Misa So this is a player that you build around This is as I said Miro was the comp This is a guy that you build your defensive core around And one of the reasons you’re also willing to move a Noah Dobson today because how many how many other team how many defenseman taken in today’s draft are going to be better than Noah Dobson at 25 i would say Schaefer and maybe one random one because there’s always one random guy that goes through So uh Sam’s raising his hand Yes Sam
No I was I was talking to the producer You’re good
He did He was raising I can’t even see Sean on the screen So Sean has morphed into Matthew Schaefer right now
I love it
I am I am Matthew Schaefer
G Sean is the expectation because you know usually these guys are not NHL ready except for the rare few Is he one of those guys that people expect to be competing for a opening night roster spot this fall
he is one of the two Yeah him and Mis I would argue him and Misa are probably going to be the two that are actually competing for an opening night roster spot And now maybe depending where Hagens goes there could be something there with that But um it’s it’s yeah it’s it’s Schaefer and Misa And uh man this is an awkward setup where he’s got to talk to them like on live team TV right here like through Zoom That’s very weird I don’t like this draft setup
Is it you’re talking about to to then do interviews after the pick yeah And also we know
Oh you’re ahead of us cuz we’re screaming ourselves
Sean pause your TV for 5 seconds
Hey Sean when you say he’s not a point guy when you say he’s not a point guy he’s not like them other two guys right like he’s getting put in the major
But this year in Erie he played 17 games and he had 22 points
So why is he not a point guy i know it’s just junior but isn’t that how they do it with everybody else i mean if they end up being 90 point guys and junior no problem Thank you
But he’s it’s scoring in the OHL and scoring in the in in the National Hockey League are way two different things You know that Lutz right like it’s there’s so his
I had more goals in college than I did my entire career
Yeah Exa Exactly No like he is a he’s a he’s he’s a he’s a play driving guy He’s
That’s not true though He’s he’s going to move your
I think it might be
No you only scored 10 goals in college You scored 38 He’s got your He’s got your card up
38 in the NHL But
did you just say you scored six in the NHL that’s what I thought
You’re 38
Your career high was seven in 834
I was on the power play then too
You lie and sack I was I was in front of the net on the power play And then Gainy didn’t remember that the next year
You scored seven goals A career high And he forgot One of them hit my stick
Did the shin pads
Yeah Screen the goalie
And you know what they said Luds you go to the front of the net you just stand there If the puck goes into the corner just stay in front of the net If it goes down to the other end of the ice let’s get out to center ice and then go back to the front of the net Do it out of just alls I did is stood in front of the net And then gain when I asked him when he was there in Dallas I said “Bo you remember when we were playing in Montreal there i had seven goals.” And he says “Yeah I remember you took my spot.” I’m like “Really i took your spot the best defensive?” He he couldn’t score either But but I said “No no you can’t.” I said “Well I had seven goals I didn’t have any my first year.” Well I did have one and they didn’t count it It was in the net They had the picture in the paper My first year it was against Washington They Well they didn’t count it during the game but
That’s right Because 82 83 you played 80 games for the Canadians and zero goals
But I had I scored against Washington It was They didn’t see it but they had the picture in the journal the next day Then
who did they give a credit to do you remember
no no there was no goal Jamie go
We didn’t have review back then I was going to say you probably didn’t have cameras on the
the real wasn’t working back then That was back when the gold judge was behind the the net instead of
I think uh Fred Flintstone was was one gold judge and Barney Rubble was the other one at the other end of the ring
That’s amazing I love that Um Sean before we get too deep into this because the uh the San Jose Sharks are on the clock except for the clock hasn’t started on the TV
Let’s text Let’s text Tom Holley right now Tell him to hurry the f up
Yeah like move along Take a picture Holy Come on You know
I want to ask you while you’re here because we are going to get caught up in this a little bit later
Would you talk us through what happened as I was driving to the studio and you and I were on the phone only to find out that there was this wild report about possible NHL expansion Uh places of interest
Yeah There was a daily faceoff report from Frank Sarah Valley about how the Austin is apparently throwing its hat into the ring with a $2 billion expansion fee which
two billion with a B
Two billion with a B And and and it’s right there with the they put it in the same article as uh Houston um Indianapolis Atlanta New Orleans was in there as well
New Orleans is interesting Yeah And now to be fair there’s actually more credence to the New Orleans thing than the Austin thing because the the governor of Louisiana sat down with the with Gary Bman back in March Now that was very much a posturing thing and not really much to like we’re getting further and further away from teams sharing buildings So you have to build a brand new arena in in New Orleans for this to happen And there’s not really a hockey market there much of a hockey market there anyway So Austin pops up in this Frank Sarah Valley report and I’m not to rip anyone’s reporting or anything like that but I and while I don’t claim to be a
Capital Insider I know hockey in Austin and I know hockey in Dallas And I had at least at least 10 people reach out to me since that report came out basically saying “What the hell is this there’s there’s nothing here on this Where where a where would they play b who’s bringing the money in and and do you know the geography of all of this and then I spoke to some people from the Stars who also called it bunk too So um I uh the dreams of an NHL team in Austin to me are uh nothing more than that dreams So
by the way for all those soccer fans out there everybody that that wrote these takes they keep talking about Austin that doesn’t have a quote major pro sports team It’s just kicking all the MLS fans that Austin has a MLS team right in the nuts
It’s a good stadium over there
It’s a great You were just there
There’s nobody there when I There’s nobody there when I went but the stadium’s nice
Yeah it’s cuz they overcharge for tickets for that LS
who’s the dude standing behind Schaefer right now
that’s Ben RGM
No no no On screen
No Who is in the light blue suit we’re talking about
yeah Who is that tell me that’s not his Asian
No it’s his brother isn’t it
i think that’s it’s a family member at least I don’t have the audio
I think it’s his brother They were showing his brother and his dad earlier so I’m guessing it was it’s his brother
Does look like his brother Yeah Isn’t his He said his brother’s in sales up in the same
He’s got that same uh brow look
Michaela
I got to go to the bathroom
Yeah The big thing with
Now the smells are starting to come in Yeah
The big thing with
Yeah that I appreciate that for sure
What’s the pink one
what’s he doing putting Putting it right by the fan and
donuts burgers and fries Ben’s trying to clog our arteries Thank you All right
Thank you to Wendy’s
They haven’t announced it yet to the pick for San Jose As right now it does not appear as though they have traded the pick So there’s that All right So I wanted to ask you Luds ask him
We were talking about this a while ago Tashan’s discuss Why does he have the football my god You want to talk about getting distracted ADHD
oh is Tom
not having the football here we go Now I’ll hit I’ll hit one of the lights and then our production team will be very angry with me There’s been lots of talk about Houston wanting a NHL expansion franchise Competition Now
there’s been discussion about whether or not the Stars want an instate rival or not A lot of the front office in the past has said “Yes that will be great We’ll have dueling fans and it will be a closer trip and that’ll be great But we talked to Brad and he Brad Alberts the stars president He really likes the idea of being the only show in Texas from an NHL perspective What do you think about the even even if it’s just horrible reporting and it makes no sense having an NHL team in Houston or
Austin or both i I I think from from Brad’s standpoint when and this is again me not knowing anything when you have a building that’s sold out every single night It’s you don’t need anybody else You don’t want anybody else If you’re not selling out I think it creates that rivalry and then you have people that travel and so you’re filling filling the buildings up you know on on certain nights So um I I understand being the only show in town you know I I just uh
I mean their TV area is a fivestate radius right now
Yeah So I mean
yeah I was going to say can we give a just one quick like nice touch of this whole draft format has sucked already but the nice touch by So for people who don’t know Matthew Schaefer’s mother passed away from breast cancer in February of 2024 And so with the jersey the Islanders gave him today they had the pink ribbon already on the jersey right when he got drafted and everything like that So I think that’s worth bringing up for anyone who’s listening here with just our audio and a nice a nice thing that the Islanders did So Luds when you talk to your folks who own and run the Islanders give them some kudos for handling that really well for a kid who lost his mom uh less than a year ago So
yeah and you could see the emotions of it too By the way the pick has been in for a little while here
This is all more to the evidence Sean that they are not keeping it to a sharp quick timing
as we were hoping
Yeah but I think as you get later it might
you know you maybe not in the first round
you get I don’t know You get the first couple big guys out first
Take this in We got the screen going now At least they’re about to Gary’s about to announce it at least So we just got a a tweet from Mark Lazarus up in Chicago said the Islanders went on the clock 14 minutes ago They are definitely not in a hurry
We are at 7:26 I’m not liking this
Not sticking to the clock at all Even though the pick is in for San Jose Did you just rewind or
I’m trying to go just trying to see if we can get forward because I don’t think Sean’s ahead of us but we’re not Well that’s
there’s a I’m sorry I know Sean jumped in It’s hard to segue back while the pick is in We’ll go to that first and then we’ll get back to the expansion talk real quick
I know nothing about wrestling but there’s some wrest Are you prepared
no
Should I there’s some wrestler about
I mean if you want to play that role go right ahead If you can read it
I got I got to read people’s names
I mean I think it’d be hilarious for you to try
Okay you should be able to get this one This one is not difficult Misha Donskov Why are we looking at WWE
i believe that’s because they’re having a celebrity announcement of the pick Yes Oh I thought it was intro song
Correct It’s a lady with blue hair I don’t know anything about
crazy blue hair You got to do a teal if you’re going to announce the Sharks
The pick is in on Twitter Do you want to read it it’s It’s who I thought based on my very little knowledge
San Jose I’ve already seen the P I’ve seen the pick I’ve seen the pick on my screen So it’s kind of You guys are what about
We haven’t even seen it Sean we’ll tell you how far behind
Bailey is still talking
We haven’t even gotten to the pick yet
Yeah he’s already hugged his family Is this going to go in order
the next kid is the big kid
Yeah that’s the one I I was hoping Jim could pull something off for
You’re talking about Fondelle who’s the big kid
you mean McQueen
roger He’s being very koi over here
Feel free to share with everybody
Look who’s by the way Our GM Ben has brought in uh Sustenance from our sponsor Wendy’s
Is that a double plane cheese only
it might be a bacon or
a bacon
It smells fantastic
It’s got bacon on it
Don’t know what that is
It’s got cheeseburger with bacon on it
Oh yeah Just keep bringing it
It’s in the pink box I’ve actually
When did Wendy’s
Oh been speaking of Austin I have been there to that that particular place
in downtown Austin Texas Oh look at that
Sean we got to Yours is on the way It’ll be here in 3 to six business days
I have I have a door I have a Door Dash Do I have a Door Dash on the way that would be great
Oh my god So Sean Bacon on that donut
Tell us tell for those of you uninitiated about Michael M
That’s for hour three for two hours
We’re going to be too drunk by then
Um Michael Michael Misos pro was as I said earlier he was the closest player we had to in the number one conversation Um anyways
I I’ve probably seen Misa in person probably about 12 times now between Sagena is only an hour and a half north of me I watched him win the Memorial Cup last year in Sagena He is a He’s a special player He earned OHL exceptional status so he’s had a couple more years in the OHL Type of player that drives the game completely Um very similar kind of like style-wise to um what we saw to Mlin CBrini which is ironic because now that they’re going to be teammates here and and everything like that with San Jose Um Misa’s game is he he creates space for guys He moves the puck He he changes the angle of attack And when when your team when when he has the puck on his stick it opens up the space for everyone else And he also knows where to go once he gets rid of it It’s he’s a really fun player to watch Um one of those guys that uh I expect him to play in San Jose this year because of where they are in their rebuild and it makes sense Um which will be a little bit of a bummer because I really enjoyed watching him play in person quite a bit the last two seasons Really good player So just to look at them real quickly here you’ve got Michael Misa joining a group that is headlined by Mlin Celibbrini and young Will Smith Obviously Logan Couture is retired although he’s still on IR for two more years I guess because of his injury He’s still at least they have to bury his contract They’ve got Tyler Defoley Alexander Wenberg Barkley Gudro Carl Grundstrom Ty Deandria
William Ecklund It’s just a weird mix right now And it seems like I mean they they’ve gone from the glorious days Obviously Joe Thornton just got into the Hall of Fame They just bought out Mark Andre Vlic
Yeah
And this is a team that is still very much in rebuild mode for these young guys Yes Correct But it’s fun team They got a coach that they’re willing to trust kind of with the time where they go They’re not going to be good again this year but they’ll at least be entertaining A lot of players that like to get up and go offensively Um a real interesting team just with how Ryan Warsovski kind of takes a step as a coach where Warovski is I think a good offensive mind And this is one of those teams where you’re going to get a lot of that skill is going to kind of build over years but are they going to add a little bit of the discipline when they kind of get over that hump for now It’s the Sharks are kind of really fun to watch because they’re going to create a lot They’re also going to get burned a lot and
score on a lot
Exactly It’s it’s it’s one of those those teams that are really that are fun fun to watch for those reasons So
who are their goalies
who
because it was Blackwood
So it’s right now it’s Gorgivv and one of Sean’s favorite is Ascarov
Oh yeah
And and we’ve also we’ve also heard the rumbling We don’t know for sure but we’ve heard Dan Vladar is apparently uh um now Dan Vadar is also a Gold Star client and Dan Milstein is the agent at Gold Star and Yars Love Oscar is his client and so Dan has a has done a really good job of moving his clients where they want them to So we know heard that Dan Vidar may end up in San Jose with Ascarov right now but right now it’s Ascarov and we’ll see who else they sign right now
Okay So
hey I I have a question for Luds Um if for a team like San Jose Chicago any of those guys what’s the realistic step to take cuz you always say like you want to see them take the next step You don’t want to be bottom of the league you know by 30 points What’s
about as an organization yeah as an organization when you’re that team that’s you know 31st 32nd What’s the next step to take is that is that finishing with you know in 25th is that a realistic good step what’s the focus i think I think what what I would look first is just uh progress steps from the from the previous year where your your goals against is getting better your goals you know all the little tiny things
more of how you play the game Yeah It’s it’s it’s all the details of the game because it typically you know the kids coming out of junior and stuff like that
it’s a it’s a big step right and it’s a different speed and a different pace and um so I think you’re just looking to be able to say we’ve gotten better in all of these little areas Whether you say you have three to five areas whichever they are there’s some improvement there And so that’s what I would look that’s what I think progress is And I think with progress with that I think teams like Chicago and those kind of guys
they need to surround those young guys with some veteran guys you know and it’s it’s hard to get guys to come into that fully
into that Yeah I mean you know and again but but I think the older a player gets
and he knows you know where he’s at in his career they’re kind of happy sometimes going into that into that kind of situation You got to be the right kind of player that knows you’re not going to win every night but you you’ve got and and a lot of those guys are guys that are going to be in the game when they’re done
You know what I mean they go through that stuff and they’re more teachers and things like that And so I think you got to you got to find those kind of players that you say you know what we we need him here and we’ll pay him a little extra to be here because we need him to work with whoever it is
You’ll see his that result five years from now
It’s not easy being on a on a team that doesn’t win night after games
Yeah
I’m not going to keep bringing back the expansion talk all night but I wanted to go back into because Sean had to jump off for a call Luds you were saying and then Sean wanted to bring up the the breast cancer jersey ad on Schaers which was a really nice touch but and it’s hard to segue from that very somber moment too And back to a possible expansion but you can you could sort of reiterate what you were starting to say about having a team maybe in Austin as opposed to just like Houston makes natural sense It’s far enough away They’re they’re already rivals in several other major sports between Dallas and Houston But what do you think about that potential but even before we talk about the Stars having an AHL team in the Austin suburbs
well I I just think from a rivalry thing I think from a fan standpoint when it’s that close and I know they’re not two hours away but being four hours to 5 hours away
three-hour drive isn’t bad right but you travel Those fans will travel and I think fans look forward to it And I think from a marketing standpoint you can put so many packages together Imagine if there was a team in Houston and Austin and here which that’s probably not going to happen obviously but regardless I mean and and if you’re in the same division you’re going to play against each other You know you got three road trips and things like that And I think you circle them on the calendar And I think it’s good I think it’s good when you get in the stands here and there’s some you know the the opponent’s jerseys and things like that in there
We have a pick
I love it
The Chicago Blackhawks have selected Anton Fondell Oh they did take him
They did with the third pick in the 2025 Is that Ro coming on i can just I can hear his voice even though it’s not on right now
Ras raspy as hell JR’s had a couple Wendy’s burgers since the last time I saw him He’s enjoying the uh
Is Sean back on he said he was but is he is he there i I want to ask him about
Fondel from I I’m I’m I’m here now I’m sorry
Okay So Sean what are we you and I have talked about this before saying that he didn’t impress as much at the U18s in Fris as we were hoping but what are all the things that say that he is one of the best players in this draft
yeah I mean so we had Anton Fron I want to get up the exact Fondell was over at Elite Prospects We had him lower than universally than lower than everyone else like um TSN had him at number three Bob McKenzie had him at number four Um Sportsnet had him at number four And we had him all the way down at 13 We we had Fondell at 13 for on our draft board And the reality is not that we saw a a poor player but we looked at him more like a a Brock Nelson or an Anders Lee type player where he’s a complimentary middle six player a good player who could be part of your team and part of your build But I don’t if you’re taking if you’re picking top five top 10 I want a player and this is kind of where our discussion came When you’re looking at highest ceiling and upside if you’re picking top five top 10 you need a player that’s going to drive a line You need a player that’s going to be a centerpiece And Fondell I think will be a top six player in the NHL but he’s going to be a complimentary piece Um is kind of a lot of how our scouts looked at it And we had uh so this we we heard the buzz about Fondell maybe going to number two San Jose was looking at that and and everything as well So there’s this is kind of the range we expected him to go But I thought our um one of our our our heads of European scouting at over at Elite Prospects Lassie Elena did a really good job explain breaking this down the other day in a film room where it’s you kind of look when you’re picking this high and you’re Chicago and I guess maybe you can just take complimentary pieces but shouldn’t you be swinging for the bigger upside shouldn’t you be looking at players that can drive their own line players that can can handle all that and for us Fondell is more of just that complimentary player who will be need someone else to play off of And when there’s other guys like a Roger McQueen or um Roger McQueen or even some other like more refined players a Carter Bear that are going to be available that I probably going to be more of that alpha type leading the line and I don’t know if Rond Del is going to be that guy even at under 18s though and Victor Ecklund was the much better suite Victor Ecklund was a really impressive suite of player I thought he looked great in that tournament
Yeah Ecklund was the guy If I I watched that tournament and I was like “Okay Ekkund would be the guy I want for my future not Fondell.” So it’s
You You were surprised they took him Who would you have taken marton I like the Martone kid You’re whispering to me He’s whispering to me You’re on the show
I didn’t want to give it away
By the way that’s a phenomenal piece of content for our live draft show
I was just talking to Sam I wasn’t on microphone This is just for me You tell everyone Ear muffs Ear muffs Everybody
You guys don’t want to set this up You want to keep it a secret from everybody okay
I don’t know I I don’t know secrets
I like I I like border I love
this format Yeah
It’s taking forever
It’s 40 minutes We have three picks
Here’s the other thing is that I know it takes time the the traditional draft format where they bring up all the dignitaries from each team But Sean that that moment where you have the ownership the GM the assistant GM
all lined up
you get that photo This just looks weird
It feels like we’re back in co right
that’s that’s what Cat said right before It’s like it literally feels like it’s
co we’re back in co What’s the What’s the point here right now so it’s like this is
bing bang
And by the way we’re 40 minutes in and we’ve gone through three picks of 32 chat I’m gonna need more of those Uh
I would read it but I I would read it but I can’t read it
So we have a super chat from Brother Sheamus which is a Casey to Smith and 99 Cup here He says “Tank Fondelle.” My the best fondelle one I heard the other day was he’s the like uh Waluigi version to Anton Londell right like that’s evil version
Yes So oh my goodness We are going to be here for this is this is going to be much longer than any before
Oh Sean did we talk about the the jersey because they also apparently did an embroider inside of his collar with his mother’s initials Oh Schaefer Oh they did that too Oh that’s very cool
We talked about the uh we talked about the patch the uh the pink patch but them putting his mother’s initials on there is a really nice touch too Yeah
Yeah
Yeah Um oh Fondell Let’s see Yeah Yeah we had Ecklland at we had Ekkund at nine on our board Like amongst the Swedish forwards like overall we had like we would I would have been take I would have definitely taken Ecklland over Fondell here Um and we’re going to find out if number number four is where we were thought the Islanders were Lods do we know are the Islanders trading to four are they getting the Are they getting Hagens at four did they make the move lutz
what they do
did the Islanders get the trade they wanted to get to four to get uh to get I don’t know I think Matthew Dart is just trying to put his stamp on He got the kid he wanted That’s it I don’t know what they’re going to do with the other ones I I would Don’t you think Sean they could use all use one or use two of them to kind of nice move for a piece
oh you mean you mean like maybe trading for a def a defenseman that’s 25 years old and could uh be a foundation of your defense for the next eight years i see what we’re doing there
Yeah
L I have one more question about the Austin Houston thing Dallas has constantly mentioned that they’re tra because they’re kind of on an island geographically that they the Stars have one of the longer seasonl long travel miles in all of the NHL right you would think that teams on the coast or Florida or somewhere where they have to go a long way would be more but Dallas because nobody you know I mean St Louis is probably the closest flight would having I mean you would have to think if they had a team like Houston or in some crazy hypothetical world we’re going where the travel would be better for you That’s what I’m saying
I you know to be honest with you I think in today’s day because they travel so well and the flights and everything
You don’t think those quick like I could be home before the evening news Some guys don’t want to be home before the evening news
Not really
Maybe when there’s bad weather but like but that’s besides the point Focus focus
Does today’s player know Does today’s player know that television exists cuz like I I think a lot of today’s generation
like local TV
Yeah Like it’s like they show up with cameras and they’re but like I think do people watch TV anymore if you’re on our fast channels Thank you See Sean picked up on your distraction and and rolled with it
That’s what we do Sean to your to the question I just asked Luds
having if they did I again we you’ve sort of debunked that this is a thing right now but if they had two teams within an hour flight
Yeah
Would that make a big difference for the Stars over the course of a season to have you would imagine they would be divisional opponents and to have that short of a trip that would be a good thing right yeah they’d be about the same distance as Edmonton and Calgary right so it would be it would also you got a lot of natural travel that way where teams would play Dallas Austin Austin Dallas and things like that So
it would work So Oh we got Utah’s pick is in
Yep The Utah Mammoth
Tony Fen now is announcing the pick underneath the Mammoth logo
Not the Yeti I hope the trainers would like it They might make the trainers drive Houston
No Take all the equipment go down get everything hung up
Instead of taking it to the plane
load it onto a plane get it off the plane then take it to the rink Yeah
There’s Tony Feno which shows how far behind we are from Sean’s feed
Yes he talks for a long time too Like he’s still talking It’s It’s Wouldn’t Maybe it wouldn’t be as bad if we could hear him but we’re are muted so we’re just watching a talking head Do we want to go subtitles does that add Does that move the needle for you guys
not really
I’ve been using move the needle a lot lately
Has Robert’s been getting it into my mind He’s been saying a lot
He’s still talking Tony is still
Why am I still talking let’s make a pick
Oh D went Wow Okay Oh he’s going to yell it
Oh
the top of a mountain I do like I I do like the
I don’t know how to say this name I know it’s a superficial thing but the the Mammoth logo is growing on me
Day
Yeah
Utah Mammoth select Caleb Day with the fourth pick in the 17th hour of this first round of the draft I can get I can get us a I can get us a French Canadian scout on the phone if we want to talk about Caleb do if you want I got a French Canadian scout sitting right next to me Oh like one that watched one that watched actually watched Q&A scout
Yeah Yeah French Canadian Bay
Well he could just call up his old buddy
Yeah
Jane Shura and find out a few things too I’m sure
Mhm That’s a fly pink suit that guy’s got on Whoever Whoever he just hugged threetime gold medalist Yeah he won He won
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Champion Shades of Sean Couttoriier according to our draft guy over at Elite Prospects So all right So he’s a not a bad player Like we had him in this range We had him
We had him at seven What don’t worry Sean These two are having a side conversation on the microphone confusing
What do we think about the uh the Mammoth logo i like it I I think it’s it’s it’s the best you could have done with that by not by not going Yeti I thought maybe I thought maybe they could just keep it Utah Hockey Club and make the logo a Yeti just to get around that
That’s what I thought they were going to do It’s funny how they almost all look the same though They’re all like the exact same logo and then it’s like just add a Tusk or a Yeti
I think it’s sharp
I think it’s cool I I love their colors I think their colors are awesome
Yeah
they do They They don’t have one yet I don’t think Do they have a light blue because that should be their third
I’ll tell you one thing the players haven’t quite figure out how to uh interact with Gary Bman like they do with the big hugs for uh Roger Goodell in the NFL draft Yeah
because this is what this is like right it’s Well yeah You’re used to it’s typically the spot where you’re coming up and like seeing the people that drafted you not Gary
B Not just Gary Bman They don’t know how to dap
Now now you get to go talk to Bill Armstrong who with a super chat from GM Ben GM Ben with a Hey focus We got a super chat
Sean this is from GM Ben a Smith 99 cup beer Sean why did Brad Albert tweet out the eye emojis that means GM Ben was not watching at the top of our show
No he was getting us Wendy’s
Well which we appreciate
Fairly fry for that I I’ll answer the question when the Door Dash Wendy’s arrives at my front door over here I’ll text Ben That is a blackmail moment
Got him
Sean did you get a response back from Brad yet
about about what it was He’s not giving me what it is but I’ve been texting with Brad The uh they are It is coming out tonight Um but he’s being very
That’s funny I sent him a message He got right back to me
Oh no I’ve been texting No he’s just not giving him any I’m just not gonna say what’s happening Well that’s the same thing Sean said
He said he’s been texting with him He just he told him it’s going to be tonight but not not what it is
I’ve talked with Brad You got You know what it is
i’m texting my brother Should I ask him
yes
Buzz is smiling like he knows something that he’s not going to share But
what you’re texting your brother
well I Yeah ask your brother
He’s a big insider He’s a lifeguard Oh this is this this day no interaction with uh the Utah brass looks like he’s like struggling to make a Shark take pitch and like the the woman interviewing him is trying to like force him to like no sell your idea right now This is
He looks so uncomfortable
Yeah it’s just a weird room Like that’s a it’s a super sketchy looking room
And why is Stormmy who’s the reporter there standing he’s in the middle and he’s over to
He’s off like “Do I have to be involved in this?” Like that’s really funny I like that logo above them though That’s cool
You’re talking about the Utah
Yeah the light blue one
The mammoth is always watching It’s It’s bad It’s awkward right it’s bad Yeah
Oh it’s not
I was hoping it wouldn’t be I’m sure it’s not any better with sound either I’m sure it’s even more awkward
We are We are We are 50 minutes into four picks This is
four So uh
oh boy
Yeah I’m not taking any pleasure of this but I had a feeling Sean you and I were talking about the co one how slow this was
Oh my god it was awful It was
How about tomorrow we got two through rounds two through seven There’s no way that’s going to go quick I don’t know if they actually are there but that’s Sean We got rounds two through seven
Well the draft does We’re not covering it wall to wall tomorrow No
No If if there if if either if there’s either one we should have done that right the stars actually have some picks in
They have picks in the third fourth fifth
We’re We’re going to we’re going to break down pick number 94 more than anyone’s ever broken down big time
That was hilarious when you asked Stephen Ellis like what do they do at 94
well because it’s a third round pick It’s the first one they have
Yeah it’s crazy Is it third or fourth it’s late third right how many teams are in the NHL
i don’t don’t try to math
How many teams are in the NHL
34 soon So 32 * 3 is 96
94 plus 32 is 96
Yes So 94 is less than 96 Yeah Let me get that
I know I I rushed you there
You should have asked Luds Luds is pretty good Hey
I don’t have my I don’t have my Texas instrument on
Megan’s got Blake Fiddler ranked 18th avail best available right now Good Vids never got back to me so I don’t really care right now
Oh take that We were trying to get him on
I asked I asked Fid to come on and do a live thing from the house He didn’t want to do it or ign uh did did they decide to watch it at home or did they go there lots do we know
he didn’t answer him
No he didn’t get he didn’t get back to me He doesn’t know Okay we’re trying We’ll figure it out There’s a one of the players is matching Kevin Weekes with the suits Sean you might be available for more than the first 45 minutes
seeing as it’s 50 minutes
I’ve got I’ve got I’ve got nowhere else to go The the kids
by the way we have Robert We have Robert Tiffen scheduled to come on at seven which is in 8 minutes and then Mike Hike at 7:30 Sean will still be here not even close to the Red Wings pick by then
Well I got I have nothing to do right now Like we’re not even at the spot where we’ve got like no one who’s supposed to speak is even available yet So I’m I’m here right now and I’ve got everyone else out of the house So
well when we bring Robert and Hikah on we’re going to push you off the screen So
that’s fair I’ll listen in and I’ll just make I’ll just make loud noises in the background
Imagine if we pushed Sean off the screen and then he just showed up right here in another chair like just swung around
That would be a wonderful reveal
That would be good That would be
Hey Sean do the Wings got do the Wings got any money left for Brock Besser
they do have money for that Yeah they’ve got space there Oh the pick is in for Nashville
Look at this That’s a cool That’s a nice war room
Some of them are in their own in their team dressing rooms with a desk set up which is hilarious
There’s Andrew Brunette over in the right corner in That looks like Trump’s war room
That’s a
It looks like uh It looks kind of like the Cowboys
It’s a very intense
That looks like they’re in Vegas Very intense uh war room
Nashville actually booked out the sphere after they didn’t they didn’t let their players go for the war room Oh I mean Oh they got got Shay They got Shay out on the golf course announcing the pick
The pick is in Oh we Well are we delayed or
Hey Sean What are you watching it on like are you on
Got to introduce who’s pick
I’m on ESPN watching ESPN
I know But are you on like the like what through what like a streaming app or like
this I’ve got it on the Hold on There we go I’ve got it here
on the I’ve got YouTube TV on the on the app there
Oh it’s YouTube Uh the uh brothers have taken Brady Martin
Trying to sync up with him Brady Martin went number five
Luds would love Brady Martin
Brady Martin
Why would Luds love Brady Martin
brady Martin is Brady Martin’s Brady Martin goes to areas that other people don’t like to go to
He is the
But that’s why I like Marton Yeah Martin is probably the best hitter in the draft He’s also his like lifelong goal and I spoke to this kid multiple times during the season His lifelong goal is to run the family dairy farm Um he’s never actually he didn’t really train hockey specifically until this season It’s been very much hockey was the secondary thing after raising cows Um so he is uh and like we had you talk about guys who you compare him to and in player comps like we had him in our our draft guide We compared him very much to a Sam Bennett type and this is uh M Martin is the he he I’m surprised not surprised he went this high because teams absolutely loved him at the combine He killed the interviews from the combine when we talked from teams we talked to about all of this But he’s one of those players where he is going to be a tone setter He is going to he he he kills people along the boards more than anyone else He goes to the front of the net He is built for playoff hockey And so this is a for a Predators team that needs a lot of this in the long run This is a good pick for them
Sean he can’t be exactly like Sam Bennett if he killed at the combine True
Come on Come on Yeah
Come on I don’t know what you’re
We’re laying out on you
Maybe intentionally was because he doesn’t know what uh Sam Bennett could only do like two pull-ups at the combine or something like that That
zero
Yeah Zero Okay
He literally did zero pull-ups
at the combine
That that story Yeah What was that again
i’ll tell you a quick side story
My first ever hockey job was with the Ommyra Jackals 0304 United Hockey League
Where’s that upstate New York Okay It’s uh about an hour west of Bingmpington southern tier of upstate New York near the Pennsylvania border And we my first day that I got there I was hired fairly late for hockey season They were about to start their fitness testing So there was a a commercial gym across the street from the arena So we took all the the guys it was the first day of you know reporting for camp and they were going to do fitness tests And they asked me to man the pull-up station And so I would literally each guy would come I would count how many pull-ups they did and write it down on a clipboard That was it There was a guy from Long Island big muscular guy that cranked out a ton of pull-ups
Is that what you wrote down a ton
no A lot
I don’t know the number It might have been 20 It might have been 25 or something like that
He was literally the worst hockey player of the group of of training camp One of our best players on that team
did like three and he goes “This is stupid This has nothing to do with hockey especially hockey
And it was and it was some other sport It was bench press It was standing leap It was all the different things
He didn’t train for that for 5 years He didn’t train for the most part
This isn’t about who’s the best gym rat It’s about who’s the best hockey player
That the point of that is just to make sure that you’re not out of shape or super weak in one area right it’s not to see what’s up
before we get to uh 7 o’clock
Oh yeah
We have to
we have our ad reads Oh
So up next
let’s do a beer break

We have Charles Barkley making the Philadelphia Flyers selection here I love that
LS L’s dude walks Luds walks away while his dude gets drafted
That’s true
Like
oh is it is this his guy yeah Philadelphia Flyers select Porter Martone from Bmpton
Les your boy He can’t hear you up there
He’s up there He can’t hear you right here Does that mean we have to say goodbye to Sean
yeah Bring on Robert Let’s put Bring everybody Look at this
Picture and picture What’s up Tiffen
this is an applause to our dynamic
You guys get to high five each other like me and Sean to do This is like Mission Impossible right here This is incredible
Cat do we want to move that the comments away so we can see them a little better
oh on our screen Yeah on it’s just on this screen I mean thank you
boys Robert Tiffen joining the show for the next little bit
And Robert because of the stack
you get to keep Shawn on Sean thought he might have to duck out after about 45 minutes to get ready for media availability with the Detroit Red Wings
We’ve gone through five picks Yeah he’ll need a sleeping bag to go to that availability
We are at uh my my family may get home before I have to I originally told they were like I was like “Oh we’ll go take the kids out We It’s a Friday night They can stay up late They’ll go do dinner at a friend’s house You’ll be done by the time we get back.” No we’re not That’s not happening So at some point
they’ve got to cut the conversation with the executives over the weird like
Oh my god At at some point here we’re gonna have we’re gonna have my my four and six-year-old children on the show breaking down picks which will be probably just as entertaining as this uh as as talking to the executives is right now So
maybe just joined us
John crossing
John coming in with a nice bottle Is that a rosé over there
uh penog just in time to see James Hagens get drafted by my Boston Bruins
Oh is that why you’re on here now e
Boston’s uh number seven They’ll be on the clock in approximately 25 minutes once they’re done talking to these while he sucks
No I love Hagens No I like Hagens Get get If you can get Hagens there that’s great You didn’t reach for Fondell Since you’re here and
they reached for Dean Lerno or something last year the 69 dude who apparently can’t skate and had one point in like 80 games
They were desperate for Char again What are your thoughts about the big logo rebranding going on in Boston right now for the Bruins
great Perfect timing on the logo rebrand by the Boston Bruins huh
it’s almost like they were looking for any bit of good PR they could possibly have Buzz your boy got drafted Philly
Yep
And he went to Philly
Philly
Good spot
Sixth overall
Yeah So John when I was a young Bruins fan the logo Well no I was in a traitor I’m okay Anyway that’s the jersey That logo not this one That’s the next That was when they changed it from that But the one from the ‘9s
which is what they’re kind of going back to although they’re going to two different color looks
Well they kind of went back I believe the reporting on it was that they kind of went the part of the reason why they kind of went to it was because
taken into the matrix
was because Patrice Berseron liked it
like the old one or this one
It was part of their it was part of them making sure he didn’t retire
Ah
was was they were like oh we’ll do a few games with that
So I really like the older logo that they’re doing and they’re doing two different versions of it But you saw I Sean you saw St Louis doing a bit of a jersey rebrand
Yeah
Um You get the hunch that there’s a Stars third jersey in the works right uh hunch of that Yeah I I hope it’s I hope they do that they just bring back the Winter Classic and Jersey in some form Maybe that would be my
Robert
Yeah Since I finally have you on the show I need to ask you
I feel more like I have you on the show actually I need to ask you why you’re such a hater and you hate when the stars play uh Mr bright side And what else you might hate in this world do you hate puppies do you hate sunny days
yeah The real reason I can’t stand Well yeah Also but uh the reason I can’t say Mr Bright Side is because I had a a roommate in college who once played Mr Bright Side for like six hours straight singing along to most of it as he was going through a break
What year was that
uh well you’re a little baby boy That was like 2005
I appreciate that
Okay So that but that was like
was when it was popular
Yeah That that would be like you know the year like that that’s my generation’s what’s the journey song don’t that’s my generation’s don’t stop believing like if you’re still that the song came out like can you really blame him that much I I just there’s a lot of good music out there
wait hold on let’s go let’s roll back Mr Right side is Don’t Stop Believing
It’s my generation’s Don’t Stop Believing Yes
How old are you
i’m 29
Also you should really read the lyrics of those songs sometime Mr Bright Oh I’m aware of the lyrics of Mr Bright Side
Okay Yeah I don’t think they’re quite evoking the exact same like spirit as I know Steve Perry who wrote Don’t Stop Believing is a big Giants fan San Francisco Giants fan and it got really angry when the Dodgers started playing it in like seventh inning stretches or whatever for a little while
I mean I understand it’s not about the contents of the lyrics It’s just about like this is a song that at most hours of the day if you listen closely you can hear a bar full of white people somewhere screaming every single lyric to it
Oh yeah Of course Yeah Besides Separate Ways is a way better journey song Anyway we should just do that one That one’s awesome
I like that take That’s probably the hottest take I’ve heard
I’m not sure if I could have named a Journey song other than that Really
yeah wheel Now I know you remember any way you wanted at some point or a disagreement between Robert and John at some point during the season Oh that’s what it was about It was about Mr Mr Bright Okay Sorry I’m I’m half I was thinking about it because we have we’re half talking to Bobby We’re half eating Wendy’s We’re half laughing at John We’re listening to the two We’re laughing to the two heads on here and I’m watching Luds sitting at the controls in the producer seat right now Too much happening I’m I’m just here until after the Bruins pick and then you you and then the show will never get Bruins are on the clock for another eight Well the pick is in
John you’re saying what you want to hear from Boston Uh I don’t care because the organization is a crap show but
fair enough Newton State’s own which people from Dallas won’t understand
The boardroom they traded Tyler Sean from right there
Yeah there you go
I was at the beach on July 3rd in 2014 when Tyler Sean was formative change for the Dallas organization
But I I I expect them to pick James Hagens here
I would hope they take James Hagens here
Lost Rich Peverly though And and Riley Smith worst move in team history
Rich Peverly was their worst term was their worst move in team history That’s not even top five worst moves of like the last three years
I was saying for the Stars
Oh
losing him for Tyler Sean
Who no He said Louis Ericson is what I was talking about
Beverly
Did you guys not hear how many halves I’m trying to focus on
it confused all of us including you Do we have a celebrity picker for the Bruins it just cuts to It just cuts to John
Is it going to be Mitchell makes the pickler it’s already Wow Amazing Robert I’m already watching James Hagens hug his family after being drafted by the right I’m guessing is Gary Bman going to have to do an ad read for Happy Gilmore 2 at the end of
the Bruins select James Hagens College
from BC of the Hockey East
from Newton State
up on the hill NCAA
Chestnut Hill College
hockey He’s fits in perfectly He goes right down the street Can you explain that to people that are not Boston literate boston College is not in Boston That’s the joke And students get very upset when you tell them that it’s not in Boston Also UMass is the flagship of Boston BU is in the heart of the city Harvard is technically not in Boston I mean there was one down there
It’s in Cambridge
but Cambridge is Do we consider that like a Boston adjacent
if you send if you send a letter if you send a letter to Cambridge to an address in Cambridge you write Boston on it it will go to the intended address If you do that for Newton it will not because it’s a different municipality This is the moment where Robert Tiffen regrets coming on the show Yeah
All right Robert Robert I’ll leave now Sam That was a very different John if you’re going to continue to sit up there can you please close your legs you You can’t be doing You cannot be doing You cannot be doing the spread about the shorts thing We had a whole incident We had Ralphie sitting there We had uh what’s Who was
By the way who was the really short shorts uh
oh it was Craig Button
Button Yeah But he but Ralph was the only one that took the Mando and went up off up off the shorts
Yeah Ralph was Ralph was a a quarter inch from you know
John John before we leave Ralph was on several levels and emotionally as well
Hold on a second Our ex producer is now on the Cowboy show trying to wrangle Clarence Hill Give him his mic back for just a second How’s uh because this is you know you’re a big part of our show for an entire season How is working the Cowboy show going for you well uh I’ll have to say Clarence is basically Cowboys Luds except when he’s uh when he’s at all those those alumni events and everything he actually takes video and sends it to his producer and gets content He’s taking shots at you I think
it’s like nothing’s ever changed and I love it
Okay
see now he wants to go John Anderson everybody
Wait wait wait wait wait Thank you John I appreciate DLS You asked us to do this show Anybody else notice that he’s wearing the Joe Thornton jersey
yes
Oh yes
I like I like the Hunger Games type thing where they make him go in front of the table
He’s going to drop out of the floor
Yeah
All right Before we get to everything else and we’re going to really highlight a bit of Robert Tiffen while he’s with us We’d like to just thank everybody that’s listening on our audio podcasting platforms If you are listening on that don’t forget you can go to YouTube for the rest of our draft coverage because we are going to complete the first round on YouTube So if you’ve listened to the audio streaming thank you very much Check out picks 8 through 32
Thank you We’re sorry 8 through 32
Wait are we going off air no we just gave we gave cat a nice little easy cut for our audio platform Okay
and we’re back All right Robert thank you very much for joining us and getting into a spirited debate with John about
Mr Bright Side What did you make of what we heard about this whole weird expansion thing we talked about with Shawn in the last hour yeah I was listening to a little bit of that I think uh I think Shawn more or less lines up with with what I’ve seen and read Um I didn’t thankfully get 10 angry people calling me I’m happy for them to call Shawn about that sort of stuff Um but yeah where where I think I think Sean asked the question like right away Where are they going to play what’s And that’s one of the key components of these these expansion proposals is an NHL ready arena Remember that’s why Alex Melo no longer is you know going to have a team in Arizona because he couldn’t get an arena So where’s the NHL arena in Austin there’s not one there So
at FC Dallas the ice comes from underneath It comes like like “Oh there’s this other place in Texas We can go
Dallas They’re going to play in Fris.”
My brain is not on not on today We got to turn it on
just today Yeah Well this week
All right
Robert and I saw Mission Impossible this weekend I think that’s what we we need to We need to break down Mission Impossible for for the next hour
Which Mission Impossible there’s like nine of them
The new one in theaters
Oh it is Is that
No it wasn’t good
Is that Dead Reckoning 2 or whatever it goes for Final Reckoning i think it’s the final reckoning
What’s the name John
final Final Reckoning Okay Yeah I’ve seen the other ones with the kids Is it Is it the kind of thing you go to the theater and you watch you say that was fun even if it’s not
yes The only thing is it was 3 hours
So like it could have been an hour and a half and been like that was entertaining
and then they could have released the other half
Yeah They could have cut out a lot of story Me and Robert just kept looking at each other Sounds kind of like something else we’re watching right now
Wow But
Seattle is now by the way We are at pick number eight We’ve only been going for
about an hour since they started the actual picks That’s crazy
Do we Do we have official start time guys do you know when they actually
The first on the clock was uh 613
Okay So it was literally an hour ago and we we made it seven picks
That’s rough
So that means we’re going to be short of five hours but more than four by this pace We are
That’s my math Yep I I was joking before but I really now need GM Ben to Door Dash me some Wendy’s I really
We might need We might need to Door Dash some breakfast at this pace here
Breakfast sandwiches all of that too There we go
No not at all That’s fine
Okay so what what are the aisles going to do they got those two first round picks Everyone thought they were going to use them for Hagens Now what do they do like do you just tell your fan base “Surprise we’re we’re rebuilding now.” Like what what do you do you thought we were going to get this guy who maybe could play this year or next year and now we’re going to get a couple mid first rounders and hope to get a right-handed defenseman five years from now
They wanted Hagens They didn’t get him Now what are they
is there
I don’t know Robert I’m reading about penog gregio right now
The idea the idea of female wine or feminine wine is a subjective and outdated concept While some people associate lighter crisper wines like pog grigio with femininity bleep this entire sentence here I think I think this is
pick You don’t have to whisper We can’t hear you from here
Something is going to be bad with what he’s about to say No I was just I was just seeing what uh what people kind of people drink penog grigio.io.io.io.io.io.io.io.io.io.io where you reading that
Robert do you drink penog grigio uh I’m not rich enough to drink penog grigio lads
Oh is that a high one I think that was the bar drinking out of a solo cup So
I don’t think it is I want to bring up a a topic that if I can get Led’s attention he might have an opinion on
Probably not Good luck
Luds I saw this this afternoon on Twitter and I don’t know if there’s any validity to this because it was an account
Oh if it’s on Twitter it’s got to be true
It was an account that I had never seen before and I don’t know if it has any legs or traction at all
Oh it’s my drinking buddy Oh wow Jacob O’Brien Sorry
We got a pick coming here for Seattle and then I’ll get to my question Is that Jerry Brookheimimer it is
It is John Anderson
I uh I have a really good Jerry Brockheimr story Actually him and I had shared multiple shots at a bar in Montreal during the draft in 2020 22 22 22 that was the same
What was that shots of what um I don’t remember of what because I was
makes sense
So So they were really good
By the way the Seattle Kraken picked Jake O’Brien from Brford
I I was in the same hotel that we were in the same hotel as the Seattle Kraken for that draft in Montreal And I just remember all of the draft prospects drinking in the lobby because Bloods probably knows the drinking age in Montreal is 18 and the uh so Jerry was down there with and I couple people I know who work with the Kraken and um he was very generous with his
bill and tab That’s our our fancy player cards
That’s nice Got Brandford the Brford Bulldogs 61 14
I have a funny uh random question Do you think these fans that are wearing the jerseys and and and sorry the sweaters and cheering know who these people are when they get picked
no
Or are they just like “Hey Seattle picked somebody Yay.” No if they if they if they were really actual fans they’d be booing because Porter Martone’s still available
Ah sorry He went So sorry Martone went that’s
say didn’t he get picked by the Flyers
no Sorry Roger Mc Roger Roger McQueen is still available A Jackson Smith is still available A Carter Bear is still available Um Carter Bear played an Everett probably It’s actually wild to me I thought he was going to be a good
John Do you have this as a bit of a reach uh we had him at 10 So a guy we had at 10 going seven isn’t a huge reach but I just Well he’s the next center you had right so they might have just wanted to center unless unless Carter Bear play
Yeah So like and I just I think with Seattle right now you’re still looking for those impact players to build around right like you have Mattie Beneers is your is you’re down the middle You’ve got your um uh what’s his name played for Windsor and played in for Coachella this year Uh why am I drawing a complete blank on his name shane Right Shane right
Um
yeah So you’ve got you got your two guys to kind of build around center-wise in theory So I would have I would have looked at like for me Bear would have made a lot of sense here I think a Jackson Smith would have made a ton of sense Another WHL guy they should have known a lot about just because that team on the back end really needs to build defensively Um I also it’s it’s funny right now because as I’m going through this like Jackson Smith’s player comp in our draft guide was Thomas Harley Like we’ve reached the spot where Thomas Harley is already players are being comped to Thomas Harley They’re they’re growing up wanting wanting to model their game after old man Harley Yeah
exactly
And their and their uh media presence as well
Okay back to my question here while we go because Buffalo is on the clock next and this is a perfect segue for me for this
The thing I saw on Twitter was somebody and again I don’t know if there’s any validity to this at all but it’s a fun hypothetical for this type of forum It said that Buffalo was willing or would be interested in shopping Tage Thompson So I wanted to go to Luds and then we’ll throw it to Robert and Sean and everybody Is Tage Thompson a guy you would make the appropriate moves to get on your roster right now
well I mean again he fits into the identity that’s been around here I mean he’s a hired gun That’s what he is I mean he’s a shooter right mhm
I I don’t think he’s bringing that change of identity Um
he’s got a lot of size but does he necessarily use it for physicality
i mean I like him as a player for sure I mean I think every team needs guys like that but I I again we’re back to what we want to you know well we I don’t know what we’re trying to do Maybe that’s a perfect guy that they’re trying to do I don’t know Like again I’m I’m not really into outscoring your mistakes kind of philosophy So um but I mean I if if you could do that obviously Robo’s gone right i mean
that I mean that’s the presumption is that to make something like that work he would
I mean he’s not taking Robo’s position though that’s the problem I mean it’s not like you’re putting him over on the wing You know what I mean like so but I I don’t Is he a center or right wing
i think he play Well I don’t think he really has
I think he play left wing too I don’t think it really matters Okay Robert LS has talked on the show and obviously you were here the other day about trying to get a little tougher but also still keep your team scoring going but not outscore your problems but be a little bit nastier Is Tae Thompson the avenue to do it sage Thompson has just kind of always reminded me of like if Jaime Alexiaak was a star forward that’s like he’s got that size and sometimes it shows up but he’s not necessarily a guy ragdolling people all the time right maybe if you get him really angry Um and that can work I mean he showed you he’s had some really good seasons where he can do that I don’t know that Tae Thompson is going to give you that identity though if you bring him in And and frankly I’m not sure it’s really an identity if it’s one player You need to have the other you know the kind of core around it right you don’t just have Sam Bennett you also have Bennett and then the players around him who kind of reinforce that sort of thing You can’t do it with just one player
Is this team actually going that way or is this just a little outside noise like I I really cuz all I hear like we’re all we all are seem to be in agreement that that’s for the most part But now the way they’re going about it and like I I haven’t heard anything specifically from
Dallas or their organization besides the fact that they said they wanted to be less of a rush style and more of a hybrid That’s about all we’ve heard So I’m curious if you guys think they’re actually going that way or if they’re believing they can still play a similar system
And to that point that was something Galardi said right after they were eliminated from the conference final Has Jim Nil mentioned anything about because I see him if you look at how we built the team back 2015 16 and then the last few years he very much values skill and offense Yeah
That painfully obvious
Yeah
Right And we’ve had the same results Is there any reason we should believe that they’re actually going to actively change that this
well but I think we’re the only ones saying it
That’s what I mean That’s why I’m wondering
Should we believe us
we keep talking No we definitely should not believe us
Yeah Don’t believe us
But I I just I think we’re talking about what we believe
Go ahead Sean
Who’s going to coach this team right like so the two names that we’ve heard are O’Neil Graham and Glenn Gooson They both play offensive rush styles of hockey the two the two coaches that we’ve talked about bringing in that have been kind of the the top of this list It’s not like I don’t expect I would be stunned if either of them were pivoting to like we’re a hard cycling team So it’s
Well wait a second Sean You don’t think that Edmonton was harder to play against this year in the playoffs than they have been in the past especially on their own zone
oh my god they’re totally different
No they were But the point is that’s
okay Well then wouldn’t Gully go “Okay I see a little bit of this now.”
I could see that but it’s not but it’s not but it’s not like you’re talking about there’s certain coaches where you’re like “Okay yeah if they’re going to bring a reputation we’re going to punish teams and we’re going to make and we’re going to be hard to play against.” I don’t see that being the the Glenn Gooson style and there would be a it would it would require a little bit of an injection from somewhere else on Glenn Gooson for that to happen So
it’s yes the Oilers were tougher to play against but Glenn Gooson is more of the flash and dash And
what is Glenn Gullixson’s style
glenn Golatin style is more of you’re going to
possess the puck get quick shots That’s what it is So shoot try to win the puck back He Oh Rad Yeah
Yeah Yeah Rad Murka just went to the Buffalo Sabres which is uh interesting because
those are the dolls Who’s that
i was wondering It’s the Google Dolls I was wondering they were showing people playing but I couldn’t hear the music so I couldn’t tell who it was
Yeah
Mhm
Sam do you know who the Google Dolls are
did we just switch over to MTV where are we at
i know I know Iris It’s Glen Gooton style is going to be you’re going to you’re looking for that quick shot initially You’re looking for that first shot You’re looking then to win it back And that is a way to play slightly more difficult and heavy against But it’s not going to be a cycling power game down low It’s going to be more of get to the puck fire try to get to that first rebound Look for more of those puck off pad puck off pad shots on the rush That’s what Glenn Gooson is a as a coach
Yeah but see you’re talking about the wrong end of the rink for me I’m talking about the other end of the rink And I think what they did is they changed their wingers Their wingers changed identity this year
I mean they went and got some Listen they went out and they went out and signed Trent Frederick to an 8-year 3.8 8 a year or something nuts like that $30 million they sign that and if they’re So what they’re basically doing is saying okay this is the kind of guy that we I mean they’re obviously saying this is the kind of guy we want
I mean if you’re giving the guy this guy’s making $500,000 less than John Tiver is getting right now So you know so they’re saying well that’s a I mean if you’re committing to a guy for eight years that plays that kind of game I think you’re saying something about
what you’re trying to be like Mhm Just But my point is that’s not Glenn Golson’s identity Like the whole
Well Gully’s on that bench and Gully’s seen a team going to the playoff or to the finals twice with those kind of players Look at the wingers Look at Cory Perry I mean all the talk about Cory Perry Look at the identity that they’ve changed from Has Connor and Dry I mean so Dry Cidle and McDavid how big of a piece were they they’re always a big piece but the focus was more to me the talk was more about how they were harder to play against especially in their own zone I don’t really care about the other end of the rank
I think Dallas is good there I mean I I think they
they can do that part of the game It’s the other end where your goalender as we talked about
you know sometimes has to do a little more work than he needs to
The big question for me Luds is and because right now we know Ela Nazarine I believe we don’t know for sure but I believe he got an interview for the head coaching job I haven’t been able to confirm that but all signs kind of point to that Um if we assume Ela Nazerine is going to be back and running the defense one of my bigger questions for Ela Nazerine and if I’m Jim Nil I’m doing this is what type of defense do you run if you don’t have an egalitarian coach who has to run things his way because I think that is a fascinating thing where I think Nazarene ran his defense more so of he was given this is how you run a team this is how you run a blue line from Pete Dbor and you run it my way I think Nazerdine if he is still on this staff has a little bit more of his own uh freedom to run a defense the way he wants to So I’m fascinated to see how that goes And that’s that’s not going to be on the head coach It’s going to be I mean it is on the head coach giving him more freedom to do it but it’s not going to be on what Glenn Gooson or people keep bringing up Neil Graham and I just I still don’t see it but like it’s not going to be on Glenn Gooson or Neil Graham to say hey we do this defensively It’s going to be more so of
Ela Nazertine Hey go run a defense the way you think is going to be hard to play against And that that that’s that’s a big part of this that I don’t think we’re talking about enough because the names they keep talking about are guys that specialize at the other the offensive end of the ice not guys who specialize back by their own goal Robert we haven’t talked about it yet but Miesa Donskov has left the organization to go to Hockey Canada and I know that he is very highly soughta and I’d love to get your take on what they lose but also the very notable Jim Nil philosophy of letting people improve themselves in their careers and to go to other places Yeah If it’s a what is I think the philosophy is if it’s a step up if it’s a promotion of some kind then his he’s always happy to let let people pursue that And I think in Misha’s case he’s pursuing like three different jobs rolled into one that are all promotions So you know good for him Uh the thing I heard just in talking in the coaches I talked to this year the times I got to sit down with with a couple of them um details and you’ll hear it from every coach in the league right we’re prepared We we focus on details and all that sort of thing We’re responsible We’re professional But um that that’s something I heard even from other coaches about a Pete Dbor team is they’re really really detail- oriented Nothing really slips through the cracks too much So uh Miesa was a big part of that Misha Donskov and the way he did presc Yeah you have all those details then you have to boil them down into digestible things that you can tell players in you know just a few sentences in a in a quick you know in a quick power play meeting or a quick prescout meeting you know the morning of or whatever it is right like you need to boil that stuff down to so this is what we’re going to tweak a little bit today for this game Um and so they don’t have Donskov doing that anymore He you know used to work kind of in the analytics world too a little bit before he came down onto the bench So he was also synthesizing that a little bit and taking that element and trying to turn it into you know a game plan So they’re going to they’re putting together pretty much an all new staff Even if Nazarine does come back it’s effectively him on a new staff Like Sean said the mission is going to be a little bit different So it’ll be interesting to see what they do But yeah losing Donskov he’s a a very highly regarded guy and it’ll be interesting to see what the whole focus of the new staff is because I think even if one or some of the bodies are the same the focus is going to be different It has
in in your hunch is it necessarily the case that Dallas will look to fill Donskov’s role because if as people may remember the first year with Pete Donskov was still with Vegas They didn’t have somebody in his actual coaching role They just had you know head coach two main assistants goalie coach video coach etc Yeah Uh that’s a question you know it touches on a couple different things Some teams it’s it’s a budget thing right how many coaches do they want to pay and how much do they want to pay him maybe they like having them more behind the scenes and it’s a less prestigious job Um I don’t think that’s a problem in this organization It’s pretty clear that Tom Gardi is happy to to spend if it makes the team better Um but you have to find the right person for that right you you want to have a consistent message And the other question is whether it’s Goldson or someone else How me which people and how many of their people would they be bringing with them And with Donskov not being here that’s another spot in the bench now that that could be open for him to to handpick someone or maybe he and he and Jim again if it’s him we’re assuming Um but who knows uh the new coach I’m sure that’s part of the conversations with Jim Nil is who would you need what what’s your vision for this team if you’re here at this interview you’ve obviously studied the Stars and prepped for them And if it’s goallet obviously he knows him better than most having played two series in a row So yeah they might bring someone in to to help do that job whether it’s exactly what Don Scoff was doing or more of a hybrid Oh the Ducks are picking now This is the whether you want to call him Charlie Conway or if you’re a Dawson’s Creek fan Pacy
Oh good show
Or if you want to just call him by his name the actor Joshua Jackson is going to announce the Anaheim Ducks pick And here he comes from our screen out now
Who’s he with is Julia the Cat Gaffne
no it’s the
Oh it’s Connie Connie That’s what you were saying Okay Yes
Yeah He’s also in what how American Summer An excellent TV show
and movie Little Mo
No I think he’s laughing at lines
These are the these are the actors from the movie The Mighty Ducks
Oh for crying
I know It’s one of your favorites Which one
i thought you The first one Well they’re in all of them
Well they were in all of them
No way They’re the first one
Yeah Yeah The chick on the left is from the first one
And the guy on the right that’s Charlie
So was she a little baby in the first one
i mean they were all children
Super young but they never played as kids
He hockey
We need a closeup there I don’t I can’t see her They definitely are not as young as you were thinking they are He’s probably what 40
i haven’t done a lot of thinking I don’t know how old they actually were when they played
How old do you think Joshua Jackson is
i’ve never heard of him
40
I don’t even know who he is Without looking it up any guesses
oh what’s with the Oh there we go Roger McQueen finally goes There we go
Sean’s paying attention to the actual pick Robert how old do you think that Charlie Conway is today
she must been a little got to be 40s right the movie was the ‘ 90s like early 90s so that’s already been like 30 years right so
he’s actually older than I am He’s born in 1978 47 years old You stop yourself Don’t make me show the picture
Oh what picture
the one with the model
Yes the car
We have to show that picture
I know We’ll get to it later So Roger McQueen goes to the Anaheim Ducks Sean you mentioned him as a guy that could have been picked earlier with the what is it the Buffalo pick Yeah Roger McQueen only played 17 games this year because of the injury but like we had him as the What was the injury where was his injury hold on I’ve got all of these stuck in my head Um he’s had mult problem is he’s had multiple injuries I think it was I believe it was the shoulder for him this year for McQueen Um but he is a in those in those 17 games he had 20 points He we I mean we compared him to we had in our draft guide we had him as shades of a Genny Malcin and if you’re getting someone who has shades of Genny Malcin at 10 and now obviously there’s a lot to to get up to that right but this is a this is a a big 65 and a half 200 lb center um that creates space passes really well pulls others in and creates space for his linemates to go Um I mean he is this this is a guy who if he’s healthy he may have been top three pick right like if he plays
Yeah If he plays more like I mean we had him at five on our board like we we had him at five on our board and so for a Ducks team that’s working through this rebuild and and trying to add these pieces and everything like that I mean this is a there’s the injury risk and there’s a couple guys in this round but I tend to be and this is where we had a little bit of our debate internally when we were ranking players is I tend to give 18y olds a little bit benefit of the doubt when it comes to injuries because I expect 18-year-old bodies to heal much better than 25 to however old bodies we we we go down that list And so this is a great quick this is a this is a really good pick This is a steal for Anaheim at 10 Like him being at 10 him dropping to 10 to me is a is a steal for for this draft
Speaking of the Anaheim Ducks
he’s just ready for Ducks My battery dead
um uh what’s his name sean
Sean Yeah Thoughts on John Gibson can he can he can he could he go to Could would he go to Edmonton and could he be can he still play there’s a lot of talk about Edmonton possibly doing something like that If I mean I’d love to see John Gibson playing where he stops after
Yeah because John Gibson tends to be
or Penog Grigio
He’s a no he’s the one he’s the penog grigio I guess of goalenders where it’s a nice early start to the game but after 40 minutes or so it’s the mistake So
this bottle on air
I have no idea if Luds is listening to me at all taking alcohol
So
no but I mean my I guess my question is Sean like if you were part of management there would would you make any kind of a move to to bring him in i mean would you uh is that something you think you could rely on at this stage of his career for a team that for a team that’s gone to the finals a couple times and seem to think that that’s a a possibility or something
i don’t like the cap hit If you can get the Ducks to retain some cap on it Yes I just I don’t like the cap hit at that number That’s my problem with it It’s you expect someone to the the the Oilers are in a spot goalender-wise where you’re you kind of swing like you don’t have your goalie Like Steuart Skinner is not consistent enough He only plays well and he plays Dallas in the third round of the playoffs So you need to figure out someone that
like and and and John Gibson is to me is
I don’t I don’t know if maybe you put him behind a good team it’s fine but it’s a big cap hit number to to make that all work
Stop Hey speaking of goalies are we still speaking of goalies
if you’d like to please by all gregio right now so
what how’s the WNBA in it um hey question Thoughts on the new ebug I uh
I think you could be I think you could be in the league Sean
I would love that I was talking someone about it the other day Not to actually give me a job but I was talking to someone about the whole setup for it where they are going to there’s going to there’s a lot of ECHL level goal is really interested in this because
you’re going to be
um the rumored salary for this it hasn’t been standardized yet but the rumored salary for this is about 200k So you’re getting a goalie who’s basically paid 200k to practice um and live an NHL lifestyle And LSDs as a former ECHL owner you know how much an ECL goalie actually makes So there’s a lot of uh there’s a lot
Well where are they coming from are they coming from the coast then you think that’s where are they getting that goalie
there’s going to be a bunch from the coast Um there’s going to be a bunch of I there’s going to be a bunch of guys from college is one thing that I heard as well where there’s going to be a lot of these goalies who spent four to five years in college because of the co rules where they got extra stuff where they got the extra eligibility and there’s there’s going to be a lot of those goalies where teams might use this spot I was told to maybe learn a little bit about a goalie coming out of college where they didn’t have any faith in them being an AHL option But they said “Okay we could bring them in They could practice with our team It’s a better eBug option than obviously the local beer leaguer.” And then maybe we could transition that into a future job opportunity So it’s going to be uh I I would imagine we’ll see probably of the 32 if I had to guesstimate you’re probably 10 to 15 of them are ECLERS You probably get a couple older guys who are at the end of their careers You might get a uh you might get a guy who you you might get a team who’s who finds a goalie who’s like you know what you’ve played your NHL games but you want to stick around and mentor our younger goalie So it’s going to be a little bit of a mix around there But I imagine most of them will be in that 20 to 25 range 2025 age range had been in the ECHL and are going to take quite a pay bump to just be practice guys See I I I honestly can see at some point one of those guys is going to get an NHL contract whoever it is at some point to play well enough that they Yeah I think somebody will I mean I think there’ll be someone you know
Oh yeah I mean I mean the the big part of it is is not having the accountant or the Zamboni driver or the
Well yeah
the Ebug practice guy that shows up more of a level
when when there are playoff spots and millions of dollars on the line because of that And I think Sean and I have been talking about that for a while It’s it’s it’s a more serious instead of like the stories are always great right when David Ays or Scott Foster or whoever else makes that debut it’s it’s fun but it it it’s sort of a lack of seriousness for just how important the NHL level is
especially when it’s at the expense of the Toronto Maple Leafs
Well that’s actually worthwhile for every second John with another appearance we didn’t expect So hey Robert I wanted to ask you a question because the Pittsburgh Penguins are on the clock not once but twice in a row because the New York Rangers elected to give them this pick rather than hang on to it for next year Were you surprised that the Rangers made this decision i mean I think the consensus is that this draft isn’t as deep as next year’s probably will be So it makes sense And also it’s the known quantity right like the because it next year it wouldn’t have been protected I think um if they kicked it next year And so there’s a chance for a real disaster Um if you if you hang on to it uh hoping that you you do better next year and that ends up being like a top five pick or something that would obviously
Do you think the Rangers are going to be that bad next year ex
Uh that’s a great question isn’t it they Chris Krider probably thinks so now after he got shipped out
because the reason why I ask is I read as uh that’s Chris Latang who’s making the selection His pick Wow
Oh well we’ll pause this thought I want to bring come back to that Robert in a second Sean what do you have for us
who’s that
we got Ben K I mean you’re taking
Kendall at 12
That’s who’s the pick
that’s a Benjamin Kindle or Ben
He’s like what was he like 22nd or something ranked
we had him at 20 Um should be he should be in the 18 to 23 range
He was a WHL scorer Um but like There’s a lot there there’s a lot of other guys on this board that I would bet higher on upside than than Kindle Um it’s this is this is it’s one of those where he’s not a he’s not a bad player at all He’s going to first like we had him as a firstrounder but this is there are some like as we’ve been doing this show I’m also in the uh I’m in my elite prospect scout channel and our one of our WHL scouts just entered the chat with Kyle Loopus overthink right now know that So I this is uh this is a reach I guess I I the also the Penguins should have been required to make both picks back to back to help our night speed up quicker Seriously why are we
like if you’re gonna have if you’re going to have 11 and 12 back to back you should be able to make 11 and 12 at the same time
Let them both go in and talk to the people too We’re gonna have two full conversations with the executives here Yes Yes Like this is uh
unreal Yeah
Didn’t they didn’t they practiced this and rehearsed it yeah they must have I’m just saying like Okay so before we get to this take a look Here’s our updated draft board of the first 11 selections taken in the 2025 NHL entry draft
And as you can see you’re Sean we’re going to go to you heavily because of course you’ve your prospect work with elite prospects What’s the feeling now as you look at the first 11 picks um
besides the the pace
Yeah Oh my god the pace is awful Um there’s been after week after kind of the the fondelle question of where he went and and and everything like that there’s been a little bit of a bet on size here between size and physical tools after the Hagens pick Um between O’Brien and Murka and McQueen you’ve got some players that are going to play well but more supportive pieces I don’t like the Kindle pick Um it’s I’m still I’m interested to see where things like you’ve got some players where like what about like a if if you’re going to take Kindle here I don’t know there’s a Lyndon Lovic on the board still Um you still have a Victor Ecklund is still out there There’s still a couple really highly skilled players still available Carter Bear is still available out there right now as well
Pittsburgh’s trading down with their second pick They’re trading down Oh
so they went for a reach and traded the other pick Before uh Robert do you have a a detail yet of what they’re trading
no not yet No I just saw it No nothing So before we get to that I wanted to just circle back to Robert on the Rangers decision because I read that the reporting was the Rangers thought that they could use their 2026 first round pick at the trade deadline Whereas if they they used their pick at 12 this year and gave Pittsburgh their one then they wouldn’t have that available That to me suggests they think they’re going to contend which means that that
I think they always think they’re going to contend with Sullivan too right that’s why you do it You get Mike Sullivan because you’re gonna win That’s the plan So right
But we’ll see We saw what happened this year and I don’t know that you’d say they have a better roster going into this year than they did going into last year Right
Well and and that bears my next question Is having the first round available to make a trade deadline move in your eye more valuable than a top 12 pick in this draft
philly’s Phillyy’s moving into the spot
It’s Philly Okay Interesting
Philly for 22 and 31 So Pittsburgh’s picking up an additional two uh two first rounders for this pick So I mean you know
Pittsburgh has three more picks than the Stars in the first round
Yeah
Well Minnesota doesn’t have a pick in this round This first round either
Fun story right now Uh the Ducks had a helicopter ready and Roger McQueen is on a helicopter to Disneyland right now
No
Is that because they want to go see have him meet Lightning McQueen
i was going to say is he on the ride he’s on the cars ride I I guess that would be the reason but that’s also where they’re doing their watch party But yes so but yes
awesome
Right now Roger McQueen got a helicopter from LA to Roger I mean um Robert can give a much better answer of that traffic navigation than I could Yeah From LA to from LA to Anaheim Good grief Especially on a Friday at what what time would it be there friday at 5:45 Robert would they make it from LA to Anaheim before or after this first round of the draft ends
uh I think you’re talking maybe mid third round tomorrow Depends on the pace
It’s supposed to be a 40minute drive without traffic right it’s never that ever
especially Friday afternoon Literally
a Captain Crunch laden Good lord That’s donut crunchberries Captain Crunchberries Oh it’s just cereal berries Oh it’s it’s a generic version I got you Cereal
is a large large donut
Massive donut Excellent So Philadelphia will as you guys just said just to re rehash this trade sending the 22nd and 31st overall picks in this year’s draft
to Pittsburgh for 12th overall
This has got to be Jackson Smith That’s my guess Because Jackson Jackson Smith
Jackson Smith you look at the way that team wants to play defensively You look at a big physical defenseman who also can move the puck well
Uh guy who probably you didn’t expect to be available to drop out of the top 10 Um
yeah exactly
I I I would guess this is Jackson Smith based off context clues don’t know for sure but this would be this would be the type of move that would be peak Philadelphia Flyers hockey to go get a uh a Jackson Smith type because he’s a guy who he could reach the he’s got a bit of that skill where at a minimum he’s going to make the NHL because of his defensive details and physicality and it’s it’s like basically and but he has some of those other skills where some of those quote unquote soft skills offensive skills that he could add as well where he could be a little bit more of that puck mover He’s actually he’s going to miss I believe he’s going to Penn State next year to play some college hockey as well
He’s a guy who I would expect I would kind of guess Philly is is here on that one But um if they got someone else I’d be a bit surprised with Penn State and a couple other teams He’s still
up in the air with his college future right
why would Schaefer go to college
like to me Schaeer is like Schaefer should just go to Schaefer should just go play with the Islanders next year That’s
fair enough Now the injury is an interesting one too because you could see how he plays off of whether he think whether they think he’s ready based off the injury or not So we’ll see Um Oh man The Islanders sorry the Flyers war room looks like very like Game of Thronesesque like
Yeah you guys are ahead of us on on the feed because we’re still looking at the ESPN panel here Hey luds I keep seeing on Megan Chica’s list of best players available they’ve got Blake Fiddler She’s got him listed at number 11 Are we at the point now where we feel like he could be drafted at any point or
I think we’re past 11
Well no no no but I mean like are we are we at the point now
well there’s only 11 remaining
No no no We’re at the 11th pick
Best available right now So she’s he’s you know of one through whatever he’s at number 11 because not the best available
Just because Megan’s got him up there doesn’t mean Do you have any expectation on where you think Blake Fitler might go or
No just from talking to people it would be late 20s is what I’ve heard I’ve not quite there yet
And again I as we see I mean everything after 3 or you know we didn’t know where anybody was going to go pick around 10 p.m
Around 10 p.m Yeah
Eastern time
Yeah
Or central
Central the way this is going By the way did you guys catch this morning what what Elliot Freiedman said about he wasn’t even sure as of this morning stars
had ow that’s the guy you go up Wow
Who you move up for players take Jack Nesbbit 6 foot4 center Why do you guys react in the way you do does that I don’t even know who the guy is but does it not fit into Philly like we had Jack Nesbet at 48 in our draft
48 What is he 6’4 identity
656by Like that’s like he is I mean that’s that’s who you trade up for when you had 22 and 31 Here’s the the incredible thing is that the Flyers had 22 31 They also have the 36 and 40th picks early in the second round
and 48 They have a ton of picks Sean I guess they really like this kid
Take him
Oh my god
Someone else has taken him I So we had I will read the direct line we had We had because we had we we talked about this when we were looking at his game Um direct line from our draft guide was if a team does select Nesbbit in the first round it’s it means they believe in his growth ability both from a strength and mechanical perspective He can improve technically He could become a highly effective bottom six two-way player capable of winning board battles You don’t take that dude at 12 This is the This is like This is the Dallas Stars taking Rodic Fox at 12 You don’t take that dude at 12 right like this is
Hey Sean to that end
Fox at 12 um taking um Oh yeah
Oh my god I’m completely blanking
Mr Hockey in Minnesota Um
Riley Tuy
Riley Tuy Thank you At what was he at 20 something 18 22 something like that
4 23 something around there Something like that Yeah I’ll look it up But does that compare is to this Not at 12 No like I mean Rodic at least scored a bit in the like I’ I’ve seen Nesbbit play Nesbbit plays in Windsor and I saw him play about five or six times this year and he was a
Tufty was a pick 25 Yeah Like I’m I’m fine if you want to take a reach at Nesbbit’s size when maybe you have picked 22 and 31 Maybe that’s that’s that’s where you take him Yeah But him going like this is this is a this is a reach to me This is now it’s also let’s I guess to their credit and if if Luds I’ll I’ll I’ll open the floor to LSDs on this
kid who’s big and wins board battles What does Philadelphia want
who’s the new coach exactly So it’s Yeah Is it
identity
he’s he’s going to fit in with what Philly wants to be For me the bigger question is just is this the proper use of assets when you had to is was it worth moving another sacrificing one first round pick and moving up to moving 22 and 31 to to get this i don’t know if that’s the the right play here So Robert I know we’re in the middle of this pick here but I I wanted to bring up uh something that we couldn’t have we didn’t have time for the other day which was you went down to Cedar Park for the Western Conference Final for Was it for two games that you were there for the Texas Stars
uh there was I was there for a game in the prior round and then a game the their last game against Abbottzford Yeah
Right
Or no next to last because they won that game Can you share with our viewers a little bit about the experience and what you saw and your takeaways from going down there during the playoffs to see the AHL club yeah everyone should go there It’s a great arena HB Center there It’s really great Uh there’s not a bad seat anywhere in there It’s it’s it’s a really really good environment especially in the playoffs but even earlier in the season uh they had a really a really uh a nasty game against Ontario earlier in the season I was there for too and it got really good um in all the entertaining ways at least So it you could really tell that that Abbottzford team like as as the game went on their experience kind of started showing more I mean they had 800 more NHL games of experience I think on their roster than Texas did but that that game I saw they Texas won uh in overtime so they were able to to stay alive for one more game Um but yeah Neil Graham uh Travis Morren Max Fortunis right like these are guys who who have been with the organization a long time and seeing the success uh even whether it’s one game or winning a couple series They finally got past Milwaukee in the first round That was a really big deal I know Owen you were down there when they won the Calder Cup But it means so much to these guys like it it feels very much like a playoff game in the NHL as far as they’re concerned because that’s what they’re playing for and they’re leaving it all out there It’s no one’s just kind of mailing it in It’s great when you watch those games I know they’re playoff games so it’s really important and it’s it’s super intense but do you get any other sense of watching some of the players that as we talk about whether it’s Blumel who’s a UFA now or Justin Ritzovian R2uru you know on and on down the list of going this guy looks like he’s closer or is it hard to see because it’s against AHL players not against NHL talent well I think of you know Ritz Kovian and Blue Mel are easy to talk about because they’re the rookie of the year and the the leading goal scorer in the league right so they’re they’re two obvious names that you kind of look at Uh and they both got called up a couple times for Dallas too Um I think Ritz Kovian’s game you can plug him into more spots in the lineup Ritz Kovian I think he’s a more versatile bottom six player or maybe maybe you need him on that second line on the left wing Um but Blue Mel is is less of a versatile player So you have to have the right spot for him I think they’re both they both have NHL level talent They can both play in the NHL Um but I think Ritz Kovian also because he’s signed but uh he’s the player that’s easier to fit into your lineup just because of his game Whereas Blue Mel is more of a specific type of player Um and the Stars I think still have a couple spots where he could be that player but I think Ritzovian if you’re really going to bet on one of them just for the situation in their tool sets uh Ritz Kovian is the one I would expect to be more likely to win a spot in camp What any other takeaways from watching not just those guys but anybody else stand out to you as whether it was Petravic going down and playing or some of the players that we’ve sort of heard about but not necessarily watched on a regular basis Yeah Trey Taylor um when Sean and I actually saw him play earlier in the season Grand Rapids too Um he he’s he’s a good player He’s a good find Scott White found him um and kind of recruited him after he finished college Um and he he feels very much like he’s going to be an important player for Texas next year He was for this year even actually They put him on the power play pretty much right away Um you know time will tell if he can kind of keep taking those steps and it wasn’t just kind of a nice good bump mid-season but as far as I’m concerned he looks like a really good player and especially if Petravic is up is up in the NHL more next season then there’s going to be even more ice time for someone like Taylor to to step up into He’s a lefty and Petra’s a righty But still um I think he I think they’ll need him to be a big part of their defense next year
It’s always fascinating me to me to see that Uh the pick for Detroit is in Sean So as as a res Oh they’ve got Dave Koulier from Full House That’s a blast from the past Sam did you ever watch Full House growing up
i did not I was born in San Francisco though He’s uh the subject of what’s her name uh Alyssa what’s her name song right she was saying that about him too right
oh that’s um um Jagged Little Pill
to remind me Jagged Little Pill Yeah What’s her name
you ought to know is the song Yeah
You ought to know Thank you
Moras Thank you John John Anderson with the assist there Yeah I believe that song is about you You
I don’t know Yeah that’s the song Watched The Office last night and they sang that song See I’m starting to put it all together here pop culture He’s looking good He’s got the kind of mohawkish look going on After this pick I’m going to try to switch to the ESPN app because everyone’s
saying where they’re way ahead of us
Do it right now if you want That’s fair
Sean I see it on Twitter Carter Bear
Carter Bear from the Ever Silver Netflix We got instant reaction from a Red Wings writer It’s also interesting Seattle didn’t take him because he was playing in Everett like 10 10 minutes away from them So yeah Yeah Sean do you have anything for us on uh Carter Bear
i do Uh one of my favorite things about Carter Bear is that when we were building out our our draft guide on things like we put like some uh player uh badges and things like that And uh we and we had for him he’s uh we got that bear in him instead of dog We had he has got that bear in him So
nice
Uh he’s a good he’s a he’s a good player like he is a someone who if he’s a um Luds this is like kind of getting like a Seth Jarvis or a Brandon Hegel that’s that’s who this is Luds and if you’re getting this guy we had him kind of going in the 789 range and kind of going at the 13 range that’s a pretty nice pickup for Detroit um he was his production slowed because he cut he had a lacerated Achilles injury that he that he that he kind of played for played through So um it’s a good combination of skill and physicality and um for Detroit it’s a good pick So Sean it’s about that time Are you gonna come back and join us in a little while i’ll be back I I need like a food I’m going to make a sandwich because I’m still I’m not
I’m not not promised that Wendy’s Door Dash is on its way So since I have to
scrge out and find my own food um I’m going to do that But I will be back soon and it won’t be too long Thanks Sean
All right Thank you Sean Robert it’s an absolute pleasure that you joined us Thank you for killing an hour We thought we’d only need about a half an hour so very much appreciate that And uh we’ll be on high alert for a coaching hire in the next few days Yeah appreciate it Uh someone uh someone make sure Luds knows how to find his car All right Pat Reed’s coming up next Robert Tiffen joining us and Mike Hikah in moments here on DLLS Hey Mike Hey Mike Can you do the entire Mando read in a mic hike of voice

All right
Too much generic cereal berries
So we have the Columbus Blue Jackets on the clock Mike Ho will be joining us in just a moment The Blue Jackets picking at 14 as we are two hours into this draft and we have not yet reached the halfway point of 32 picks That’ll be the Islanders second pick at 16 assuming they keep it
Who said it was about going to be like two and two and a half three
two and a half yeah To halftime The fact the fact that their TV
gap block is only three is crazy that they are
Oh they’re just going to keep rolling four
Whoever
I just I hope someone’s in that production truck or like that production truck is getting a call that’s saying like mess the f up There’s no way they’re going to have to cut out So whatever they had programmed after
Oh they’re pushing it
It’s all getting wiped out
right Yeah Somebody’s having a rather un angry night
I mean I’m just curious like they they had to have run through this right so if they practice and run through it how do you not see that it takes two hours to get
12 picks
i just don’t understand like go up there change into your Oh first say hi to commissioner change into your jersey then come over and let’s interview on a Zoom with the Zoom
Yeah the door the door thing is weird that Okay
it’s a weird way to do it Go walking into that Matrix Hunger Games room All right the pick is in Pick us in for the CBJ And I love the celebrity pickers but like they don’t all need this long
They they talk for a while
intro and everything Yeah
Well they didn’t get all gussied up
Yeah
To then not actually do their thing I believe that’s Johnny Goodro’s widow Oh is that who it is
it looks like Meredith Gdro Am I wrong
that would be very astute observation
Thank you And a very Yeah she’s got a standing ovation so that makes sense I love that I’d like to hear this Thinking the same thing
Did you switch over the app we’re now listening to We can’t even hear it There’s no way it’s in the microphone There’s the Jackson Smith selection Uh Luds Tri City That’s Stu Barnes’s team
Oh wow All three of us at once just leave already done that
Hey why don’t you guys fill in
well we have Hikah joining us here in just a second He’d be awesome if Mike joins and it’s just three people walk out He goes “Did I have the right link who
Who are you people jackson Smith newest member of the Columbus Blue Jackets
64 64
200 lb
There you go
199 Calgary Alberta What number pick was he
14 Good Not quite halfway That’s crazy
So apparently
so I emailed Hikah the link this afternoon and then I’ve sent it resent it again to to from both of my work and personal emails He said they kept going to his junk mail He just found it So he should be connecting here in just a second
That’s appropriate Yeah It’s about where we rank right
our our links get sent to the junk mail
Yeah Wow Look at that Look what he’s got rocking What is that on there canadian flag or a maple leaf I mean a big kid man Especially at 18 too And 200 lb already 200lb 18-year-old defenseman played in the Western Leagues who
a little heavier
Yep Sam how you doing over there
good
Yeah What’s your takeaway through 14 picks besides uh eating a donut with a knife over here
it’s a giant donut
It is Uh no I mean obviously the this is not I get disappointed when events the NHL events seem to sometimes fall short of expectations That’s my thought right now Like we’ve had a few of these events where we’re like this is awkward and slow and things like that but other than that I’m surprised of a few picks only because I I don’t know a ton but knowing the two two or three guys that are still available that some of these pick people jumped over teams jumped over um is a little bit surprising to me But I think this part of the pick I love when they that they get to talk and but it’s just you want to shake the hand of the guy that just drafted you right like you don’t want to look at a big TV screen and there’s Don Wood
have your internet have your Wi-Fi j you know cutting in and out like
Blue Jackets GM Uh Luds this seems like as we are on this topic a good time to ask you about your draft experience because it’s not what is common in today’s NHL love you you to share us that story briefly if you would or not briefly We got plenty of time Yeah mine was uh nothing like this I was actually at the University of North Dakota in the offseason Uh I went back after my freshman year helped out with a hockey school and I honestly didn’t even know the draft was going on I had no idea Um I got a call I was walking to do a um one of the groups and I got a call from the head coach and he said “Hey stop into my office.” which unfortunately I heard that quite a bit my freshman year Um and he said “Come on in and sit down.” He goes “Hey I just want to let you know that uh you’ve been drafted.” And I said “Oh okay.” And no I never asked him You know that was a thing And I He goes “Oh,” I said “Oh okay cool.” And I say “I get going.” And I walked and as I was walking out the door he called me back and he said “Hey you want to know where or who?” And I said “Oh yeah where?” and he goes “Uh,” he goes “You got drafted in the third round by uh Montreal.” And I said “Oh yeah right.” Like I’m never going to play there And that was it man I I I left and
walked out and that was my that was the extent of it I didn’t I don’t think I even told my mom and dad until I got home from the the whole thing I don’t really cared either No honestly No it was just nothing I was really
I didn’t I wasn’t as a kid and even in high school I wasn’t planning on playing in the NHL ever It was never like a goal of mine You so you you were playing Did you I mean and I was not a forwardthinking teenager I I was thinking about today and tomorrow I wasn’t thinking about what I was doing down Was there any thought of what you were going to do after going to North Dakota
no No not at all
You were just along for the ride see where it goes Well I I mean they pretty much told me I was going to do when I ran out of classes to take that you’re leaving You’re you’re going to go to camp in in Montreal and stuff like that Even when I got there I was you know I was prepared to go um to the minors I mean I I would never expected to play and then just there was a couple trades made and so that’s hilarious that you didn’t know the draft was going on
No I had no idea I I never followed I never even watched hockey And fact we all the only team that we were ever watched where I was up in Northern Wisconsin was the Blackhawks And you got that every once in a while on Sundays Yeah
So it was never
I I just didn’t seem like even I’m a real small town Didn’t even seem like everybody was in the the NHL at the time you know we were all doing four different sports and so yeah
let’s welcome in one of your favorite guys in all of Dallas Stars There he is live from Frisco
It’s Mike Hikah the senior writer of the Dallas Stars Hikes what’s the mood over in Fris for this decentralized draft uh very bored Um there’s just me and Taylor Barrett are here and uh we’re just waiting Um I don’t know that anything’s going to happen tonight but we’re just waiting to see if there if something happens I mean we got we’ve got the Brad Albert’s uh sideway eye so we figured something has to happen
Yeah we’re waiting That’s what uh the reports are that we should have something to talk about tonight is what we are uh hearing from from Brad himself So are we gonna move down in the draft do you think Mike i think they need to collect more picks Mike why don’t you give us the latest on since there’s no drafts to talk about no draft picks or anything right now What What Where are we going with the coach what do you know i know nothing Um they’re keeping it very quiet
Why do we have him well be nice to him He’s our guest I’ll I’ll talk about anything uh that I know about which is um basically uh Landman uh my dogs uh these are the things I’ve been working on Craig
Mike let me ask you this If it if there are only two names if that’s the case the only ones that you ever write about or talk about you and Sam are there one of the two that is more of a preference for you this is going to be a answer right down the middle of the fairway You ain’t gonna say
I was gonna say this is that’s a tough one Um from the you know once we started this I mean I was on Neil Graham as the best candidate because of everything that he’s done with the players that are on this roster Um but as you guys have talked about uh well what if they do bring in a head coach like Glenn Gulletson and Neil Graham’s a top assistant then is that the best of both worlds uh so I you know I’ve heard that theory I think it’s a good theory We’ll see what happens Um I I still think Manny Malhotra is a is a great minor league coach He’s ready to jump up I I don’t know if he’s one of the candidates or not but it makes sense
So let me let me ask you
Say Vancouver pick Braden Cuts Seattle WHO
Uh announced by Mik Mikuel Samuelson or Michael Samson Yep
Go ahead
Thanks I didn’t want to miss that
We have to say it
I mean it is a draft show Mike is it is it is it set in stone that that Neil Graham would be if that was the case would would he be the guy would he be okay with popping in as an assistant coach versus taking a head job because I thought the talk was he’s going to get a head coaching offer Maybe not this year though
Well it’s funny This goes to to uh the Denver coach Um if I were him I would have you know just said “Look you’re either going to name me or not name me.” And maybe that’s what happened Uh so you could go to that theory now You’d be hurting yourself with your own organization Um but yeah Glenn Gullison’s not an old man So it’s not like you’re coming into you know and you’re going to take over for Rick Bonis or something like that Uh if you step in and and become an assistant coach then you might have the same run that Glenn had in Edmonton Uh and if you do believe you could be a head coach in the NHL and that does seem like a possibility you know whether that’s this summer or next um I’m I’m with you Craig I I don’t know that I would want to take that job Do you think Mike that there you just mentioned David Carl Do you think they went after him pretty hard and is there is there anything they can do to sway him off of his previous decision of saying he’s going back to Denver um no I mean if he if he Well here’s the this is my theory I don’t want you here if you don’t want to be here I don’t I don’t want to have to beg you to come here So then I kind of want you to want to be here So I don’t want to have to sway you Uh even if I do think you’re the best candidate um you know I I would just assume go with with Glenn Gullson because I know he would want to be here Uh or Manny Mahalra if that’s you know your candidate Um I don’t I it’s it’s a it’s a really interesting process uh that they’re going through is the fact that they’re the only team left Uh the fact that it sure doesn’t seem like they need them for this draft Uh so you know you get you get the head coach in here when you get the head coach in here And I think they have some very good candidates I think they can come up with a good solution Um but I was just sitting uh in the backyard the other day thinking this was a really good coaching staff and they beat Colorado twice in the playoffs They beat uh Vegas in the playoffs They beat Winnipeg in the playoffs So whoever comes in is going to have a really high bar to get over So I I’m very curious to see how all this works because
you know it’s funny Mike Go ahead Mike I I haven’t we haven’t It doesn’t seem like I I haven’t heard Naz’s name mentioned lately and and I don’t know if he’s been able to or allowed to go out and interview for other head coaching jobs if he has any or is he just kind of reserved to either being the head guy here or because we’re not hearing his name or is he just going to be the D coach here who knows i mean the whole thing with Spotter and then with uh uh Misha like but wait these guys told me they were all going to be back That’s what I thought right
that’s what Nil said
Tim Nil said he plans on having them back So yeah I don’t know what Elaine’s thinking um you know does now I will say that they’re at a point where the options you know one the options to go someplace else might might not be great and two the option to stay here to me seems like a pretty good option I mean you’re gonna coach a really good team that’s going to have a chance to I think have some success you know So if I’m Elaine I would want to stay and then you have to just make it work with whoever the coach is which I think he’s got that personality He can work with whoever Um if you look at that last group that was kind of thrown together Uh so you know John Stevens comes in he was Monty’s guy Uh and then he’s left over when Monty leaves Then you got Bones then you got Nelson then you got uh Daryl Dh Derek Laxall and you’re like well this is kind of a hodgepodge And yet they came together and helped the team get to the Stanley Cup final in the bubble So I I think they can find a way to make this stuff work I think they’re all good coaches I think Elaine is just a wonderful human who can make whatever work Uh if he decides he wants to stay here and then they decide they want him to stay here I’m just kind of waiting to see I I just I want to see what the announcements is and then how are they going to make this work
it’s it’s public right isn’t it i mean if NAS went out and had an interview or two we would all know that I mean it would be reported right there are very there are very sneaky different with like like we have we don’t know if they interviewed David Carl That would be one would not find out
I was talking with Sean about this earlier David Carl does not have an agent
Typically you would might hear something if you have a representative who’s pushing you They might then share information with one of the NHL insiders to go you know some media member to let that out of yes David Carl is in fact available In fact the reason why we found out about him being the candidate in Chicago came through one of their other candidates agents because they were aware of the process during that So and because Denver is a private university there’s not necessarily a way that we’ll actually know unless we ask Jim and he says that after the fact and I don’t even know if he would
Yeah Yeah So it it could be both It could be
Well I was just curious about I was just more curious about who’s interviewed for the star coaching job What’s that
say that again Mike
I’m I’m ser I’m seriously asking you who is interviewed for the star set coaching job because I’m not 100% sure So I’ve heard from Elliot Freriedman that they believe that Gulletin and Graham were interviewed and Nazerdine was given one And that’s really all we’ve heard publicly right i haven’t heard We’ve you Mike you you and I have listed a whole bunch of names in the past
Yeah
We don’t know if they’ve actually been granted interviews or not Yeah
So I don’t Let me ask you this
I’m actually to I I’m actually to the point one they don’t want me to break news That’s you know part of my job is they’re not going if I put something out there they’re going to be mad about it So I just sit there and wait And two I just I just would like to hear from them what their who their choices are and then I’ll report that and talk about who they’ve picked
Yeah
Well but the other thing is there there’s not another head coaching job available right now is there nope
Is there one more
no I was going to say no I was pointing saying you’re right this is they do not have any pressure to go fast because they are not competing with any other team to hire
but I but I think still before free agency you want to have a head coach in there probably that’s I mean I don’t think I don’t think you have to I I get that but I still think that if you’re getting hired as a head coach you might want to have some kind of conversation with your general manager if he ever comes to a point and he’s talking about hey we can either sign this guy or sign this guy like I still think there should be the conversations going whether it’s gully Naz Naz which way do you see your team playing you know because I don’t think
I don’t think the general manager and maybe they do I don’t think Jim Nil is going to dictate
to whoever the head coaches this is a system I want you guys to play I think you interview guys and and be able to ask them how do you see this team playing here’s our team How do you believe what’s your philosophy all this kind of good stuff
Yeah And you find one that that fits
Yeah That fits into that Yeah Exactly And you can have a conversation about it too But I but I but again like I think that at that point if there is the free the draft doesn’t matter like these kids not two of these guys that who cares as far as current coaches but guys that free agency if you’re talking about let’s just use Marian he’s probably not going to be here but hey Gully Naz whoever it may be you think we could you’d want to fit him into your system you know what I mean would I just think those kind of conversations should should happen but it seems like well there’s No rush to get a head coach
Well if you’re
I think there should be a rush though
Yeah You have the player perspective So if you’re a player let’s say you’re a free agent free agency hits Jim Nils talking to a player trying to get him in Would you feel comfortable coming in not knowing who the head coach or multiple assistants would be
that’s a great question because me I probably ask here Yeah but I wouldn’t care because I’m just I just want to play for somebody You know what I mean but there are those kind of if you’re courting a a big time free agent of course they’re going to want to know like what system you guys playing You know
the question is are they actually courting a big- time free agent at this point
what’s that
what if they’re not courting that last hike ask Mike You know that column ask Mike Mike apparently knows everything They have no money So until they get rid we need like I’m dead serious Craig who are they going to get in free
neither does DLLS but we keep on pushing forward
well you get the you get the big names there but I’m dead serious so if you look at the group of defenseman they have eight so they just need to get rid of one of those if you want to you know if they want to have a decision on that NAS could probably help but then they got what room for two more forwards And you could get those from the Texas Stars or you could get them from free agents you already know
So I I don’t know I just I hear all these names and I’m like “Okay how are you going to make that work?” Because in my mind they don’t have the money to make any of it work They have their roster pretty much set
Yeah And they need three like two like you said probably three forwards to to still bring on and have I don’t think this team wants to go all year like they have in previous years where they’re having to call someone up and send him back down to the AHL every day Like they need 13 forwards They want to rely on that So I don’t know where the money comes from That’s why we have conversations here and we’re like Mitch Mner is interested in Dallas Okay Are you selling half your team to get Mitch Mner on your team because that’s about the only option
Mike I said this It’s It makes for good
Go ahead I was just going to say makes for good summary talk but that’s about all
No I was just going to say Mike like you know we were talking about this brought it up last week and I’m like so where was was when they when Ranton and deal was done and you know Stanovven takes off and all this other kind of stuff Was that the was that the the knockout blow was that the one and if that one didn’t pay off knowing where this team is right now do do you think they still have the ability to put together a lineup that can get back to playing for a game to get you into the finals uh I’ll answer it in two different ways one because of the injuries from last year they had I think a cap hit of 92 like 10 million over the cap right in actual stuff that they had because Miro’s captain counter or or Sean’s captain count right so they got they were able to go over that okay so take that and then take the fact I think they had 107 million in actual cash paid to players last year and I’m going to make the argument that may have been the best lineup we’ll ever see for the Dallas Stars So that’s part one of all this Part two is if you’re going to get to that roster in my opinion you have to wait till February or March Like I mean look what did Florida add they added Seth Jones and and Brad Marsh on How do you So save your money Don’t spend all your money now If you have to rely on minor league players for four months do that save your money and then go make your moves in February and March
So Mike what I would what how I would respond to that is that Seth and Marshian were compliment players to what they had put together there They were they were players that came in and basically pushed them across the the goal line right is Dallas going to have that team getting to the deadline well if you look at the contracts yes So the the contracts say if you’re keeping Jason Robertson which I think they would want to because there’s a you know 40 goal scorer for 7.7 million and he’s a restricted free agent at the end of the season So he’s still under your control so it makes sense to keep him So you got him right you’ve got uh um Rantin you’ve got Hints you’ve got uh Wyatt you know you just go down the list of players you’re playing 7 8 9 12 million already And so yeah I think that’s the core of your team Uh your goalie is making eight You’re you know you’ve got uh uh uh a great defenseman in Harley who’s making whatever he’s making four or five So yeah I think the roster they have right now unless you plan on trading Jason Robertson or trading you know some one of your other players to get something in here you kind of have already spent all your cash I want to go back to the coaching question
No you’re not wrong
I want to go back to the coaching question for just a minute because I had a followup for you Mike Jim has always Jim Nil has always been a guy that touts the resume when he talks about players right this guy’s done it before He’s shown and proven that he can do it at a NHL at high level in the NHL And he always at least publicly talks about that being a very important feature when he talks up players that have while he’s done it before We believe he can do it again kind of thing When it comes to a coach the stars have been really close in the last three seasons They’re missing the over the hump And if that’s the bar which we talked about earlier being exceedingly high do you think it matters to bring in a coach that has won before whether it’s in the NHL or at another level you know there’s ones that have championship pedigree David Carl was the one that we brought up a couple times because he’s won both college and internationally with Canada And that begs the question of how important is previous championship coaching experience for a team that seems this close to getting over that hump It would seem like it’s very important Um but I I don’t think they want to David Carl’s the interesting kind of unicorn that he’s done it and he al he also is is you know a fresh face I don’t think that Jim wants to go get an older coach Um he has said on many occasions that they want to get the next Scotty Bowman the next John Cooper uh they they look at Carberry they look at Knoblock um and say you know why not us why can’t we get those guys uh and so that I believe is his mindset Now you know we’ll find out in however many years whether that’s the right choice or not but I just don’t think he’s dialed in to go get somebody who is older who’s one big in the NHL Now again David Carl’s the unicorn that you know would kind of answer both questions but if it hasn’t if he doesn’t want to come like I said I don’t I don’t want somebody who doesn’t want to be here So just a quick recap here Victor Ecklund from Sweden has just been selected with the Islanders pick at 16 part of the Noah Dobson trade They now have a pick at 17 which is in is going to happen momentarily here Um
Eric Murphy
Yes Kevin McConnell
Love it And he’s doing it again
The actor he’s he’s out there making the picks He’s huge Islanders fan He uh if you guys remember the show Entourage he played E aka Eric Murphy Uh but he he’s been an Islanders fan long as he as I’ve known him as a public actor So they took Ecklund Luds I don’t know how much he remember watching that semi-final between Sweden and the US but he was the one for that Swedish team in the U8s that really stood out to me in a really
over in uh in Fris
Yeah
he was the kid That’s the one that they took And now they just took Kon Aerson from the Barry Colts of the OHL But I remember Ekkund was a really standout player for me I didn’t really know much about him beforehand
What’s his Yes please Um what what was his size on what what’s his
Ecklund yeah he’s like 5’11 I think No but
but he was scrappy
Scra Yeah Along the wall and stuff like that
and won a ton of battles And remember Fondell who’s the big highly touted one bigger did not play in those last five six minutes when they were trying to to nurse that lead Ekkan was out every other shift
because they really trusted his play And he
What what guess Mike you got a beer you got a beer
you need a beer mike Mike listen to this water
Look at this Mike can can he see us no
He can see us Barely
eat Well I’m eating around the bacon
You got half the half the donut half the donut on your
imagine that
Ben went and got us donuts with bacon on them M Mike you have bacon Here’s a question that I
I I like I like bacon But here’s my question Why do we eat dessert for breakfast so you go get a donut That’s basically dessert Right
now I got All of it is cereal donuts all that stuff is Popsarts That’s all dessert
Yeah it’s all dessert It’s because we are an obese country Mike
That is why Now my screen is sideways
Buds broke his keyboard with his uh bacon donut So let me Is he frozen
no
Or no he’s just holding that beautiful smile pose
He’s just cheesing
Mike you’ve been in that same pose for the last two and a half hours Yep
There you go Mike There it is So Hikes let’s talk about some of the other things because uh while we wait for the next pick which will be Calgary at 18 what are your thoughts on moving on from Mason Marchman and basically using that cap space to lock down Matt Duchain for the next four seasons um I think it reinforces what both Pete and Jim Nil told us uh when we wanted a physical retribution Uh I think each of them use the exact same quote We’re not that team And I think the fact that they signed uh Matt Duchain and they let or traded Mason Marchman just tells you that they’re not that team I know we’d like them to be that team Uh but I think that they think that the best answer in the playoffs is a power play goal and that it’s more important and that whether that’s Marchman or Jamie Ben or Lean Bishell uh trying to retaliate just gets you in trouble Uh so I could be wrong and I could be putting words in their mouth but the action seemed to speak to we’re a skilled team and we believe the best retribution is a power play goal So wait before didn’t you say that they’re a good enough team with what they have just add a couple guys at the deadline I didn’t say that I said that is who they are The contracts say they are who they are So their belief is and again a new coaching staff We’ll see what happens there Uh their belief I’m putting words in their mouth but this is how I read it They are a very good skilled two-way team They can they were third in the league in scoring I think they’re usually top six or seven on the power play They’re top two or three on the penalty kill You look at the dynamic of Rope Hints of Wyatt Johnston of you know a lot of their players are good strong two-way players And you know so then I believe that they believe that you go and play that hockey and you can win in the playoffs that way Do you believe you believe that as well no I believe that they believe it I don’t You know what’s funny about me and my job i honestly don’t have any opinions anymore Uh because whatever I think is wrong Um and then what you know again what am I I’m gonna tell them I’m gonna tell them that they’re doing wrong stuff you know for the team I work for So that I am a bad you know source in that regard But I basically have just come up with I’ll just report what they do and
Okay Mike But let let’s let’s settle this because you know you definitely know You may say you don’t know Brad Alberts with the eyes What does it mean
i have no idea
Yeah you do I I’ve asked three people in the building tonight
He doesn’t
Do you think it actually meant anything
do you actually think it meant anything i don’t know
I would say you should say it meant it meant nothing It just gives everybody something to talk about In theory as I’m driving to the rink my thought is they’re going to announce something because they got nothing else So the eyes of the team eyes of the sports you know Dallas area is on this team tonight and they got nothing So then the thought process is Brad and the marketing people will come up with something to give us a story So I’m still waiting on that I think that still could happen but they have told me nothing like
yeah we we were supposed to know we we were told we’d have something to talk about on our show
so we’re running I mean we we would be running out of time if this draft wasn’t eight and a half hours long but we still have donut
we still have a donut with bacon around that’s true
ls have you tried the donut yet maybe that’s a brake
Mike you think an outdoor game
possibility for this
I can’t get the announcement I can’t do it
can’t make yourself eat the bacon I can’t make myself eat bacon with frosting
don’t listen to these two just me and you Mike me This is the first time in their show’s history that Sam has been uh claiming that he has focus Yeah you look you are like it’s kind of like it’s kind of like a writer to writer kind of symbiotic thing
That is a higher level word
Symbiotic relationship they have going on here
Jeez I have a couple beers Must be drinking Budweiser Well made Budweiser trivia Sam doesn’t have all that trivial music TV knowledge clogging his head up so he can just focus on hockey
Thank you Mike Okay Hike I have a serious hockey question for you that goes with the Mason Marshman because that trade away I I’m not saying that’s I I have any problem with it I I think he’s a decent player I do think that he got a little caught up in the reputation with his offic with the officials Took some bad penalties drew some but he kind of canceled some of those out with some of the penalties he would take
But it leaves to me a pretty notable hole on the left side of your top six because you still have Jason Robertson but then who who do you have or who do you have to go find to get somebody on that left side along with Hinton Rantin Duchain and Sean and of course Robo i don’t know I mean I What money do you have like I said I keep coming back to you have enough money to get a million dollar winger but maybe a little bit more I guess I mean once I guess if you can get rid of Dumba it sure seems like they’re keeping Ilia Labouchkin So I mean you literally have $4 million for three positions Is that right
yep If you get rid of Dumba clean out not taking anything back in salary at it that would be 3.25 and plus whatever they got right now One so four let’s say four and a half So $4.5 million for two more forwards or three more Don’t don’t say that with such I mean the forwards that we’re thinking about are you know guys like Ritzovian Okay Yeah Name those guys that you had the other day
So Justin Rovian you have R2uru possibly you have Mate Blum Mel but you have to resign him He might go elsewhere Colin Blackwell has not been resigned yet Thank you John Boy he’s sharp on that is we knew it But but Mike right there Mike now listen the the guys that that Owen just rattled off
Rovian Blue Mel what was the other one
huru you two huru like the the Okay So these are the guys that you now all of a sudden are we the same team that we were in December last year if that is your lineup that you’re going to add two guys to at the trade deadline and go deep in the playoffs I don’t know I mean that’s what else is your option your other option is blow the whole thing up trade everybody like you you are committed contractually to a lot of expensive players So then how do you add physicality how do you add skill how do you know like to me the best option to patch some of those holes is save your money now let it accumulate over the season potentially you get another injury or whatever and then at the trade deadline then now instead of getting a million half maybe you have four or five you know technically on the cap you can get a four or5 million player again giving up draft picks or whatever it is you have to do at that point in time But I don’t know what your other options are Craig I know we all want them to be better I don’t know how this team is better than last year’s team when you just look at the cap hit and the money spent That’s I I don’t mean to be negative I’m just saying they have a a they have a lot of work to do No you know what like I don’t look at you saying that you’re negative because I said this the other day Like I I think I just think that the big swing was Mo It was that was the big swing
right and so it didn’t work It didn’t work
Okay I mean I’m not saying that it’s not going to he’s not a good player He’s here three rounds into the playoffs
But but the point is now but but the thing is now Marchman’s gone We hear Robo’s name blah blah blah Um Jamie come you know Jaime’s a little bit older Sean’s a little bit older Was that the the the big kick at the can and now we are just maybe we aren’t going to be able to get back to that same spot because of the people that we just the players that we just mentioned Yes it was a a big kick at the can Uh but the theory is is Thomas Harley going to be better is Leon Bishell gonna be better is Mer Hast going to be better is Jason Robertson gonna be better because I think they want to keep him you know Wyatt Johnson you look at the players who are in the core or the the the best part of their career and think well why couldn’t they all be better and I think that’s part of paying them $8 million because those are the players you believe in I think they’re better but I think they’re the kind of players just for me some of them aren’t necessarily the kind of guys you need in the playoffs That’s all I’m saying So let’s let’s move on from that Do you think it’s legit that they’re actually shopping Robo as much as everybody says that they they aren’t shopping him i don’t think it would be a smart thing to shop him for the simple reason of here is a guy who wants a big contract right so he has in the three months in the middle of the season he was scoring at a 40goal 100point pace for three months So you believe that you still have that player here He’s making $7.7 million in the cap Why would you get rid of him like even if you ride this whole season out you still control him as a restricted free agent Meaning whatever you can get this year you can go get it next year especially if he’s put up 40 goals and 100 points So no it doesn’t make any sense to me to try and trade him I think he’s an incredible value and I think he can help your team do what you want to do which is be a skilled team that again makes people pay with the power play
So here here’s how I would operate with with a guy like Robo that that you that is going to be looking for a big hit Do you think do you think Robo wants to be and stay here in Dallas i don’t know I think a lot depends on depends on I don’t I I can’t get into his head The whole last contract kind of scares everybody I think uh because it took a while He he didn’t just come in like Wyatt Johnson and say I’ll take whatever you got He you know he said he needed to negotiate and find his value So if he is really worried about what his value is then I’m not sure if he has to get it in Dallas or if he’d be happy to get it someplace else if that someplace else wanted to pay him more than Dallas does
Okay
Now I think he likes it here I think
Okay so this is what I guess this is where I was going with it If if I know that Jason along with a lot of other players I mean I I think I saw something the other day that the Dallas Stars are the most desirable team in the NHL for players want to come to I don’t even know who made that up It could have been Brad Alberts Maybe that was the eyeballs I don’t know But but if I know that Robo wants to be in Dallas I mean and and he wants to be here I I I really don’t think there’s a player here that doesn’t want to be here And I we all know why I no I I he like definitely likes it
Okay So now this is not Jim’s nil Jim Nil style but this would be my style I would have it out there that I’m shopping him I would get him scared that he can go someplace else because when it does come time to renegotiate a contract and he doesn’t want to leave here knowing that there’s a a threat that we may move you maybe you don’t you’re you and your agent you go to your agent as a player and go listen I don’t want to leave here so I don’t want to be shopped around and stuff like this Jim Bob let’s come down off of this 12 million or whatever you think you’re trying to get from me that’s what I would do if I were in that if you’re trying to negotiate an extension after July first Yes
Because if they go into the final year of this current contract which he’s still an RFA arbitration and he has a good year
if he scores 3540 goals that number is going to go up It’s not It doesn’t matter what the the negotiate they will have a very strong position of scored goals
I I don’t even care about all that kind of stuff I what I want I want players that want to play for me
Sure And if I believe in you and you’re a player I get it I know that you have a right to do this but just like what Florida has done with their players they’re buying in because of they are a
what was the number for Bennett
8
8 million over 8 years 88
8 for 64
64 million I believe So that doesn’t sound like a hometown discount does it
you think
uh well no but well the word on the street was he could command if he left 10 to 11 million For how long
same deal
Eight years at that’s all I heard I don’t know Well I think listen Ben if if this thing was wide open there was money I’d be paying him that kind of money I just I think he is
again this is not a flash in the pan guy He’s been doing this He plays like this
He is 29 though so he’s a little
It’s the same with Brad Marian I I think that he is not worth 10 million right now but he’s definitely worth seven seven and a half You’re paying for his playoff worth not his regular season worth at this point Yeah but I think that Oh no I’m not not just as a player of what he brings to the group
Okay Yeah On and off Yeah Yeah Yeah To the group I think that’s what you need I mean again I think you need those kind I I don’t know either one of them guys but we know harm rash We hear of Marsha Paul Bennett is with the group I think Bennett is probably with the group I don’t I take out of the equation everything that we’ve seen for the last week You know what I mean i think he’s a serious I’ll do anything to win kind of player you want more of those guys
to to what Luds just said and I I completely agree with every point
but I do wonder do the NHL teams that didn’t win the Stanley Cup that year overcorrect to try to copycat or adapt what the current Cup winner did you know I I in my brain I always go back to 2007 when the Anaheim Ducks won the cup and they were huge right they all were 6’4 65 And so it went from you know maybe if if the Ducks don’t win that we we’re looking at it at a league that looks at skill and speed but no in the next couple of drafts it was all about getting beef right behemoths I agree with Luds and I think that what the Florida Panthers did they’re a phenomenal team but there’s more to it than just a couple individuals It’s the whole makeup of everything the chemistry the pieces that they’ve added over the last couple years Do you think the rest of the league is going to overcorrect to try to find the Florida Panthers magic pill instead of just trying to figure out what works for them and their style of what they have um yes and no Because what if Edmonton would have won i mean are they that different than Florida i think you know I think Knoblock came in and and made them a very good defensive team or or at least you know a solid overall defensive team And I think there is a formula but I don’t think it’s exactly what what Florida did was created a culture
Yes
And so if you can go if you can go create that culture I think there’s a lot of different ways you can coach them to win games but you kind of need to have that So Seth Jones was you know quoted afterwards and saying that when he came in there that’s all they talked about was winning the Stanley Cup Like that was kind of a revelation to him coming from Chicago And I think that he became a much better player because of that Um I I like Seth Jones a lot but I’m not exactly sure if the Stars would have got him would they have gotten that same Seth Jones or did he come in and react to what Florida was doing and become an even better Seth Jones So if they can do that then it’s really hard to duplicate Like if you’re making players the best they can be then I don’t think the style or the the physicality or whatever it is is the key I think the fact that your room your culture makes them the best player they can be
Yeah I I had said to Seth after this whole thing about Seth Jones
Yeah And his mom the same thing is that
you know it was a tough situation for him in Chicago only because obviously everything that was happening there the the quality of players mainly his contract you know he’s making 8.5 million and and he actually was trying to do too much He was trying to be the guy trying to be sort of like play superhero
I mean he you know they’re they’re in a bad spot and and he’s the guy making the most money there and he’s the shiny penny in town and so he’s trying to carry that thing and that’s not necessarily who Seth is Seth just found a role and he and but that that whole group that they put together they play the game like they know what their roles are Even even Kachchuck I mean as much as he is that kid um he understands what his role is And then you can go down the line with those guys And when Seth got in there and and the way he they’re like “We want you to go.” There were times I saw him step up and pinch in the neutral zone and things like that he’s got good instincts And and I think at other times he was doing things that got him into trouble only because he was trying so hard to carry the team on his shoulder in Chicago So it it’s such an important thing is that you have to understand when you get with a team what your role is and how you you fit into the team and you kind of play within that He does his thing he does his thing I do my thing and then we all kind of move the needle forward
To that point did you ever play on an NHL team that had a really rough record meaning New York Islanders
okay
that I I you can speak more to it than seven in one game I’ I’ve worked for a team never played for a team that lost 51 games out of 80 It’s a it’s it’s hard and things break down To that point how much more miserable is it for Seth Jones or anybody to be part of a team where nothing seems to work and you lose a lot See now when I say this it’s gonna I’m hoping none of them are listening but
I mean we’re worldwide They may be listening
I’m talking about teammates is we had the kind of players that didn’t care And I don’t mean that negatively I mean Pat Flattley was a great captain He’s a hard-nosed player but when you don’t win and you don’t win and you don’t win and you don’t win eventually you kind of throw the flag in And I got him coming up to me like “Lood you got to stand up and say I’m like there ain’t nothing I’m going to Well you were the Montreal Canadian.” And that had nothing to do with it We had guys that were that that just felt like there was no way out of it And you just kind of go through the motions It’s a It’s a tough spot to be in and and I’ve only fortunately been in on one team like that in my entire career And even when we weren’t good in Minnesota we had guys that wanted to dig out And then what happened is when we got here and Bob Gayy ended up driving the bus he started bringing in people that would help everybody dig out And then you get to the next level then it was more about getting you over that that that little space and and then to the next level Hey guys we got a breaking news story here going on because I just saw Mark Jenko’s face on ESPN
Get over here Sam Let me get out of here
John do you have any sort of fanfare music or any drop for the There’s the Dallas Stars War Room That’s perfect
We got to give
Brad Albert’s eyeballs from yesterday And there’s We’re looking at the stars room We have a threetime general manager of the year Three consecutive Jim Gregory awards for stars general manager Jim Nil He has defended his title twice now He is the 2425 Jim Gregory general manager of the year A three repeat for Jim Nil
Well then you know what then he better pull something out of his butt
You don’t think the ranting move was enough let’s see how good he really is No I mean we’ve all said that I am a bit surprised because I think what
what Zitto’s done in Florida it’s hard to argue with that But but again that you know that I don’t actually that award
I believe this was voted before they won the cup
No I don’t think it I don’t think it happened till after the second round is what I heard Somebody somebody confirmed that
Sean do you know it’s it’s voting it’s voting after the high hikes by the way It’s voting after it’s it’s voting after the second round of the playoffs is completed
What is he saying i don’t know Do we It’s like I got to read lips on this show
Well it’s because the speaker they can hear us just they can hear Sean just fine We can’t
Sean’s fault after the second round of the play
It’s not you Sean It’s the speaker is on silent after the second round
After the second round That’s what I thought Yeah I think that’s what that’s probably the Brad Albert’s eyeballs It is for sure
Yes So from your you’re in Fris what do you think about the big news of Jim Nil three in a row i think it’s wonderful I mean he works very hard He’s a very good man He He’s created a culture here where they’ve gotten to the uh Western Conference Finals uh however many times three times I guess Uh uh but and again I get so it’s funny I was talking to a friend in Edmonton and they’re ripping that team and you’re like they got to the Stanley Cup finals two years in a row but again it’s not enough So I can tell you this as great as that is to win those awards nobody’s more disappointed than Jim Nil and nobody wants to work harder to get this team over the top Sean your instant reaction after all the speculation I mean none of us when we were making our guesses to what Brad Alberts was alluding to thought this was the was the I mean we’re talking about a third jersey reveal maybe an outdoor game announcement maybe a coach hiring maybe some big trade blockbuster thoughts This is uh this is this is Brad has hurt the value of his eyeball emojis
Oh no a disappointed Sean This is uh there was uh there’s if you’re going to use eyeball emojis it’s got to be uh something that impacts me I guess is my uh it’s got to be something
we we tried While Ben was on the set here I was trying to get something out of Brad since the this draft is taking eight hours And he uh I thought he was trying to hint with some words He was saying the word out and I was like “Outdoors?” And he just goes “No
no.” Well well Brad the the the whatever he is literally two minutes before that came on he texted me three eyeball emojis sent me one directly to rub it in So so it’s uh
we got to start posting We got to just start posting eyes
I mean just all the time
That’s That’s hockey media right now though Just
Here Sam I need you to go Sam quickly run over to the AAC take a picture of the stadium outside and tweet an eyeball emoji picture and then just and then just leave it for 6 days and see what happens Here I got my I got to get my forehead Is this draft almost over
no not even close We’re on pick 20 of 32
Look here you go Breaking news Looks like Kevin Weekes
Exactly
That’s exactly what he’s going with All right So Mike we’ve been really uh it’s been wonderful to have you here Thank you for helping us kill an hour because
I probably lost my job with all my negativity
That’s okay We thought that the draft might be wrapping up by now but we still have
Good job sitting on the fence tonight Mike
13 picks
Still to go
Where is he where are you Mike where’s that background
uh I’m in Brad Albert’s office I’m joking Uh we have a we have a meeting room on the third floor Okay
So we have a nice big that’s the toilet on that upper level
They don’t put me they don’t put me in that room right before you go
Oh look
Yeah
Just since we’ve already put you up against the the the wood stove as far as your job status What are your prognostications for the next couple of days as we approach free agency on next Tuesday July 1st again what where’s their money uh I think they need to you know find a way to move Dumba Um then make a decision on Labouchkin Then if they can do that then I think they open up possibilities in free agency Um and then they need to get a head coach in here Uh so they I mean they’ve got some big things they have to do And but I I I get frustrated with the names you know that come out over Twitter or whatever Look at the contracts they have and look at the money people are making or on this team and I think that tells you what they’re going to do in free agency because they kind of have already spent most of their money
Hey hey Mike is there is there going to be a statue made of uh Razer
is is Razer getting a statue is he gonna Is it going to be right outside Brad’s door or is it going to be out in front of AAC hey that’s a hockey hall of famer you’re talking about right now
Exactly Congrats to Razer Yes
he he’s earned it He deserves all of it
Pikes uh thank you again for joining us Uh we’ve It’s always fun to talk to you We’ll have you again hopefully soon because again there’ll be some downtime and hopefully we’ll have some more fun things to talk about But we’ll talk about your dogs Appreciate you giving us some of your time tonight
Thanks Mike
Thanks Alex
I want Craig Lewig’s snowmobiling stories That’s what I want
Yeah we can do that Hey Mike come back again when you can’t stay so long Okay

Oh I didn’t hit the button
Okay hit the button

I don’t have that one
That’s okay We also have the Mo Rantin finisher We have the uh There it is The John 16

the the severance season 8 episode 2 song Season 2 episode 8
So all of those are available Plus we have writing from Sean We have writing from Sam Sam the write up of this draft I can’t wait to see where you’re going to go with this It’s going to be excellent
If you remember any of it
it’s just going to be this link
Just here it is We covered everything possible In addition to that they are going to Vegas Uh I believe John finagled his way out of our show just so he could get on the Cowboys trip to Vegas I don’t blame him
See when it was offered to me I said “I won’t do it.” And then Ben looked me in the eye and he said “Vegas.” And I said “I’m in.”
And that was it He found your kryptonite sin city So head to dld alldls.com/intro to get the introductory offer You get 20% off merch in addition to the free shirt 20% off the trip events It’s all worth your while here on DLS I have a perfect follow-up to that Owen Newkerk of DLS Okay John do you have the famed cartoon Cat Cat says we have it
of the of the DLS crew
Speaking of what you get when you become a diehard you get to join the Discord so that you can post things like what we are about to put on this screen which I am
Are we putting something up here
we are It’s It’s buried There’s a lot of things on that computer that John’s looking at right now but we have we have plenty of uh of talented fans Oh we have
ain’t nothing
Is it anything or just a
pick the Senators trade the 21st There it is 21st trade to the Predators What the
This luds did you not see this oh cuz I put it in Slack
This is a uh a drawing from one of our new dieards I’d have to look up the name to say who it is because I don’t remember
Is that you that little guy in the middle
I am the squirrel who is apparently a big eared baby But they
old guy on the right That is Owen Newkerk saying hold that thought and have you tried Shady Race Luds you are saying balls butt cracks and grundles Look he even has your little crappy computer with the pulled out thing and everything
That’s a great job And then Sean getting interrupted Great muscle tone on that arm
Can I finish
but I feel like they gave you a little bit too big of a gut I think it’s I think it’s resting on the desk I think it’s the
But that’s not Let’s look Yeah Well I can tell you that’s not there But that’s fine That’s what I’m saying Like it’s it’s a caricature but
I’m also not a child So like
I mean I have much more of a contention about the beer belly on muds than I do about
big eared child with a bottle
Now if I if I had anything to do with management here and any level of this
which we all know you don’t business exactly I would take that picture I’d have it blown up into something that would fit on that wall right over there
What a great decoration right
i’m trying to get our Stanley Cup So this is from D Fitch right our
die Son of a Fitch
That’s a great name
Son of a Fitch drew this
And underneath it you see what it says
is a new dieard who used our $36 or whatever whatever that the new deal to become a diehard So that is all wrapped in one
George Castanza Pavvelski
Yep There you go All the drops Hold on Finland
Yep The bottom is just drops
and finish your check Your checks Your chicks I mean all of his favorites
His or her favorites
It’s amazing I mean that is incredible The the drawing Owen looks like the peanuts are Hey is Sean coming back on
right now he’s right there Don’t you see him he’s saying
I see him but he hasn’t finished Sean says “Can I finish?”
Yes Sean is on Thank you John That’s
I have a question for Sean Well done Great cartoon work right there
Multiple times
Hey Hey Yeah Sean is frozen into that Um
why did you ask if Sean was coming back do you have a question for him
well Otis Hey Hey You ever watch you ever watch Mayberry hey you ever watch Mayberry RFD Andy Griffith Show
yes I have
Yeah You look a little like Otis right there Hey
I have a question You just sent us the the voting and things like that Can can you can I I’m trying to figure out how they picked that that winner like what are some of the is it moves is it the is it because of the rantin move in this case or how does it what what criteria goes into that
yeah it’s uh
as you’re googling it right now I could have googled it but
no no I’m just so because it used to be they’ve slightly changed the award It was a It used to be only the GMs voted on it Um so there used to be 32 votes but obviously there’s they’ve added some other executives to and league officials to the voting because there’s 30 37 ballots it looks like that Jim was on So that’s more than 32 GMs And so it’s the award is kind of it’s a very loose determination and definition of basically which GM did did the best to improve their team But the problem is they don’t go how far back It doesn’t define where that goes to right like so for me congrats to Jim He’s won three in a row That’s that’s great But I agree with you Luds I don’t know how Bill Zitto doesn’t win this award based off what he did what he did to build that team add to it with both the Marshian trade and the Seth Jones trade to do all of that Like all of the criteria that makes Jim a potential winner for this to me that’s why Bill Zoto should have won as well So I it’s it’s also we don’t know get to know who votes on which ballot Like Jim is one of the voters on this So I’m fascinated if Jim actually votes for himself or if Jim is one of the people who’s like I’m not going to vote for myself because that’s who I am I don’t know But it’s it’s a it’s a it’s an award that they also vote on at the wrong time right when it’s after the second round of the playoffs it just narrows it down to people who are that deep in the playoffs And you should
I would say right about now
Yeah
If you’re Bill Zo and he and this did whenever this came out I don’t know when it came out I guess tonight I would think that Bill Zoto would be the first guy to say “I’m just going to say it man because I get one a night I don’t give a shit right now.”
You know what I mean like this is probably that year where I really don’t care We’re good You give it to Jim
Yep Yep I agree
You’d rather take the You’d ra You’d rather take the other trophy that people know exactly know actually know exists
We’re going to By the way we’re going to put the list of voters for that award on the screen but before we do we’re moving on in the draft Here’s the top 20 Cameron Reed
was the last pick at 21 Sean if you would give us just a quick summation aside from the fact that it’s been three hours for 20 picks
just so you know I did text Carbo and and make sure there was no relation there And there is none Y
In case anybody’s wondering
last couple picks have been really interesting The Carbono pick we had Carbon Carbono was a probably a top 10 talent honestly He’s a guy who dropped That’s a really good pick up by St Louis with Carbono Um and then the following pick with Columbus right there going um Peter Andreanov first goalie off the board and um
is that a surprise John
that is a surprise to me Now it’s a surprise based off what I watched this season because I’m responsible for doing the goalie scouting I had I had um Andreanov and I had him in my top five goalies for this draft um with Joshua Ravensburg who’s still on the board as probably my top goalie for this draft Then I had Draov Andre Froolov and Alexander Medvidev three Russian goalies And so that was uh and Dranov we had kind of heard a little bit of rumblings that teams looked at him as a first round talent And it was one of those spots where when we heard that it’s like okay that’s fine He could be I have no issue with him being your first goalie on the board but I don’t know if that’s the right market for taking that pick right like we talked about the Philly pick at 12 where did you make the did you use the right resource when you may have been able to get that player later So really interesting pick for Columbus who is kind of in that spot where they’re trying to find their next goalie I really like Jet Greavves and Columbus who should be in the uh pairing this year with Elvis Mickens So I but you add another bet to that another young goalie and then um I don’t mind the Reed pick here by Nashville They traded up to get it Um it’s it’s a draft that’s been after we get through the fact that it’s taken way too freaking long It is it’s it’s a draft where I think there’s been some teams have some teams have shown how they value various things Philly betting a little bit bigger on size Not really surprising Um you look at I want to make sure I have the list in front of me here You look at Columbus trying to work to kind of beef up the back end the way they they really need to Um the Islanders did great and have done great in this draft I mean I know they didn’t get Hagens they didn’t get the Long Island story and all of that stuff but between Kahan Hensson who is a one of the best hitters in this draft one of the most physical defenseman in this draft and Victor Ecklund who Oh and you saw him at U8’s one of those guys who he way outplay outplayed um um Anton Fernandell I mean Luds you should tell the Islanders guys they did they did a really good job They added three To that end Sean so Stephen Ellis who was on our show yesterday
about the Kon Herson pick the Islanders second draft pick when they had 16 and 17
He he wrote “My favorite defenseman in the draft He’s mean He can score He gives it his all every night He’ll be an instant fan favorite 6’2 I think he’s 200 plus pounds already.” When you hear about a defenseman that can do it all gives it all he can score and he’s mean
Yeah See that
you like that don’t you
well I want to see that I want Well it’s more about the mean part I get the scoring part I get I want to see him combined Yeah The the mean part generally you don’t Well you know where it comes to mind is Chris Pronger
Oh yeah
Like that would be that would be the guy And I don’t I don’t know what they mean by score but you know I mean does that mean he’s a 15 goal scorer or you know as a defenseman but the first thing I think of as mean is is is prongs Like I mean he he was mean big and you know and and what happens with those kind of guys and and Hatch you could throw Hatch into that category Right I mean Hash got 10 to I don’t even know 10 to 15 10 12 goals a year but I I think that what happens if you end up getting more space and I and I think that for players in this generation and this era that can be big like that and be mean you will get more space especially if you you know at the other end of the rink and and in your own rent and as a defenseman you know when you have that reputation there’ll be 60 70% of the forwards that aren’t really interested in going to the front of the net which is kind of what I always as everybody knows I kind of complain about that around here
Okay U before we get we have a whole bunch to get to
Hold up John
Go back and look at that picture Would you have a special super chat request but they uh she has actually asked you to provide the bing bong
bing bong
And then they just do it She it was a I believe it’s a Madano and a 99 cup here And what Kendra wants is to hear the helluck drop
Oh yes
Oh we don’t have that anymore There’s actually two Hella Buck drops That’s the only one I have
You don’t have the other one again dude
Let’s go get the other one live Except he has You’re asking for trouble with that one John Okay Uh before we go any further Sean here’s the list of the voting
for the uh Jim Gregory general manager of the year award that Jim Nil just won for the third consecutive year And I mean the the obviously the top two I think are indisputable whether you had ZTO as first or nil like but nil pulled away big time over everybody else as far as those points
Damn Where’s Don Sweeney
so this is this is this is after round two we said right This is after round two Yes they were tell me Miko Ranton didn’t win this win this award for him But that’s my point
Yeah Like the second round Miko Randon was the best player K’s my favorite That is a big part of that I don’t know Maybe he still wins it but I don’t know if it’s as far away if they do third round
But I do like it that they didn’t they did it
after the regular season and during the playoffs Yeah
But then again let’s see Uh Winnipeg Washington No So it’s not like that Sometimes I find that when you get into you know after the second third round they’re doing it ends up being the last four
Yeah You know
it’s
you got you got Edmonton on there as well LS it’s also L it’s also funny to me where it’s obviously Bill Zto doesn’t really care He’s got the trophy that actually matters But how did how was he left off so many like I I see these numbers and my rough math skills are that there’s Jim Nil was on seven more ballots than Zitto was on like how was Zitto left off seven people’s ballots right like I don’t like how like I know he doesn’t care He’s got the trophy that matters But how is Bill Zitto how do some people look at this award and not put Bill ZTO anywhere in the top three on their ballot
he’s left off those ones that are at the bottom The random Ottawa Montreal And Sean here’s my biggest question of all of them for seeing that for the first time is John can you pop that up one more time i’m looking at number five I think it was
Chris McFarland McFarland Okay With the whole cluster thing that happened there and then and now they lost in the first round
Okay They just traded Coyle away today One of the players that they picked up Nate just doesn’t want to come back
Wait they traded Coyle
They traded Charles
They traded Coy He’s in Columbus
Columbus now Yes
But but I’m just That’s my point is like prospect basically
And and again they were knocked out in the first round So I’m that’s why sometimes I just wonder how this all works
I don’t Well that’s no disrespect to Chris Look at the numbers too
But let’s you look at Tulski who only got six third place votes I would argue that Tulski although they didn’t get the ransin trade right in terms of resigning him made better moves to pivot and got his team to the third round You’re right So who’s voting for McFarland or Chris Patrick over Eric Tolski here
my number seven is a guy that’s my favorite guy So I’m glad that Army got that he got recognized because they were kind of you know looping around there and I think he gets that award because
he had the nuggets to go get money
I mean that’s that’s changed the trajectory of their team the next couple years
Yeah Which one’s Liz which one’s more impressive to you making the playoffs ottawa or Montreal uh Montreal
Yeah
Yeah Mont Montreal Well you know what i don’t even know if I could It’s kind of half of one six of the other kind of thing because I I just think that Montreal but but what Montreal has done look at today is they believe that they’re a playoff team now I I think they’ve shown enough to me more that probably goes to the head coach Yeah my opinion and then the and then Hughes but I mean I know he added some things but but I think what he did today because I know that they didn’t want to come in at the number they what was he what did he get today nine and a half who
95
stops
it was just under 10 wasn’t it
nine and a half
Yeah nine and a half They wanted to be around seven But I think what Well that’s what I hear But but what they did is they went out and said “Nope we’re at a point where we’re making the step.” And so they understand where they’re making the step and we got to pay to get them We’ll pay to get him
Yeah Dobson nine and a half He’ll be there uh UFA in 2033
Yeah he got the full blow
Nice Nice long Maybe the Stars can get him 2033 Let’s go Uh let’s see So the Ottawa Senators are on the clock right now The 23rd pick We have
I think so left
Only 23rd
No
Is that not Sean Hook
while we while we have a moment can I ask uh Sean or anyone else answer a question for a Bruins fan i would love and also how does it how does it work that uh so Pete shakes loose spotter decides he’s not gonna stay here ends up in Boston is it just that Pete is a head coach and strictly a head coach and spotter knew he needed a job and Pete wasn’t obviously wasn’t going to have one for now so spotter hopped on with the
Go ahead Sean I also have a thought on this but go ahead
um so two parts of it Pete decided to take his $4.5 million and just get not paid to not coach this year and
Cancun Dbor Yes And so uh
Dbor
Yes And Steve Spot had basically the choice of getting paid probably a 20th of that to not coach this year So for him to go look he could have not worked and been paid to do it but he I Steve Spot at his core also wants to prove he can be an NHL head coach at some point And so
I don’t think you have to make a question I mean I’ve actually asked him straight up before and he said absolutely he would like to be a head coach in this league and he said it pretty definitively about a year ago when I was talking to him
and for him to be able to do that he had to separate himself from Pete Dbor So I think it’s a bit of that John where it’s Steve spot is taking a bet and gamble on himself that he can go and do something in the NHL without being attached to Pete Dbor and that’s what he’s trying to prove on this and if it doesn’t work whenever Pete gets his next head coaching job I’m sure he’ll have a spot for Steve’s bot So I would like to add to that John two things One is uh absolutely I think that if he shows success without being under Pete D’Vor
which I think he will Yes that’s Tom Green making the Ottawa pick for Travis Green their head coach
I love it
Oh Wisconsin
Here’s what I will say about Steve Spot real quick is that if he does well with Boston’s power play that will add to his coaching reputation and maybe get him to the point where somebody will take a gamble on the head coaching thing The other part is Sean you’re right As Sean walks off the screen there’s a very good chance that the next job that Pete Dbor has Steve Spot will join him again
Yeah No I think so I think that that’s the that was interesting to think of like is is Pete
What was the question
pete’s got a bitch We were talking about
We were just talking about John asked us about Spotter going to Boston Yeah
And and going whe is it to go away from Pete to show he can do it extra why didn’t he just take the the one year on his contract and collect that and not coach for the year
he may the my answer would have been well Pete makes about four or five million and
well that was part of Sean’s answer
Oh there you go Sean’s making his pick
I I had to make my pick in the draft
This is a check dog moment Tom Green Tom Green says Austin Massachusetts is his pick Wisconsin University Logan Hensler gets I was wondering when he was going to get picked
I didn’t go to Wisconsin University
No but you’re from the state Well I’m from state As a matter of fact they called me two weeks later and took my scholarship away from me because I didn’t have a 2.5 grade point average What Wisconsin did that’sough ride That’s a tough one to hold though That’s a tough North Dakota was grade point was 2.0
But would you have gone to Wisconsin
yeah Instead of No they came We had a Badger Bob
But we were good But then did they bring the Badger
so no What
did they bring the the Badger mascot when they
Badger
like the live Badger oh my god Can we get Can we get that fuzzy dog to sit in the middle next to Wouldn’t that sell you on a team if they brought their live
well wait I’m from It’s I mean it’s my hometown and everything You’re not my hometown
Yes I’m Doesn’t matter
They should have done their homework They should have known that you’re
known to shop in woods and metals That’s it John what’s what’s the dog’s name
dog’s name is Vzna actually
Oh okay I like that I like that Spotter would be a good dog What if Boston’s power play goes like 85% this year there’s going to be there’s going to be dogs all over Boston named Spotter No but see that’s the thing And what I witnessed this year from uh my good friends the Dallas Stars faithful is very similar Owens a Patriots fan I think the biggest the biggest uh parallel I can draw to what Steve Spot may experience in the Boston market is Josh McDaniel
Boston market Boston market That’s classic
Steve Fast never got any credit when the power play was doing well in Dallas but the second the power play wasn’t work Like Matt Duchain misses a pass and it’s Steve’s fault
So much hate
McDaniels never got any credit because everyone gave all the credit to Tom Brady and then the second Cam Newton fumbles in week 17 and they miss the playoffs It’s
the Cowboys They want you back
and that’s what that’ll happen with SP and they they’ve had some bad stretches of power play in that city too So uh hopefully
but I mean their roster’s stacked for they got weapons
Oh yeah No they got the P Boston Boston the Boston power play
They got Marsh they got Thornton power
And you know what’s interesting John
to that end John when they talked to Spot on Nessen Steve Spot mentioned that in using Pasta he referenced how he used Jason Robertson and he said “He’s our shooter I would imagine Pasternok would be you know we’ll move him around to find where he can get it but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on that half
Pos gets killed in Boston And
don’t be surprised if Pasta is not there next year
Just we are
What
when you say next
you this year
Uh don’t be surprised if Don’t be surprised if he follows his old captain’s path to a certain team
to Florida
The Sharks Oh no Uh are you referring to Charara well there’s so many here Are you talking about gonna early retire
getting that’s that’s getting Blizzards and C and eating them out of the
surprise oh Brad
Mhm
Pasta to the Panthers Yeah cuz they have cap space for that
with interesting I’m going to send this
You don’t think that guy is pissed off right now he didn’t win that rookie that what’s that reward called gm of the
Yeah whatever that thing’s called He’s pissed off He’s going to pull the trigger You don’t think the biggest motivation those guys have is that when’s the last time anybody won three in a row way before Pittsburgh As a matter of fact I want to say it was somebody that won four in a row
I believe it’s Edmonton Oilers wasn’t it
exactly You don’t think that they think they’re knocking on the door was Edmonton or the Islanders it was Edmonton
It would be Edmonton
Yeah because Edmonton was after the Islanders Yeah afterwards Yeah
Yeah
Hey LSDs I was just looking at the 1980 Wisconsin Badgers
Not three Five Just Yeah I was saying they won They won quite a few
If you had gone to Wisconsin you could have been teammates with Bruce Driver
I know
I was just looking at who’s on the 1980 Wisconsin Badgers roster
Shel and I might have been partners Uh I don’t know if Shel would have been three years after me Sean Poster goes out to Florida Does Mar stay came to my house and we kind of had a little
I don’t know how that’s possible but
who hilarious a bunch of I was like six seven or no sorry 10 or 12 I think we were
kidding was a legend you know uh you know what would have been really funny played for Wisconsin the third what in your third year at uh North Dakota so 8 year I left
283
that was the year I got left goal Let go
Your teammate with the Islanders Patrick Flattley
We are guys we are officially 70 picks away from the first Dallas
And by the way that was that was Chel’s year too When is that on Thursday Is that Do they pick on Thursday they will pick at the first day of training camp No Otherwise if we have the Phantom we’ll never be able to hear Sean
We do Yes The answer is yes We want it on full blast but we can’t hear anybody
So keep it keep an eye out I just sent the time off of that those Sean and Lud’s comments to a reporter a Bruins reporter in Boston So we’ll see if this gets aggregated I can’t wait I really hope so Let’s let’s let’s cause some trouble
No they Led insinuated that David Posternok may get moved by the Bruins and Sean insinuated that it would be to the Florida Panthers Cuz we’re only three and a half hours into the show We might as well say Pittsburgh is trading into this pick
Hey I’m Hey hold on Hold on Sam’s got an announcement Go ahead Sam Pittsburgh is trading into this spot So Pittsburgh is getting the
pick
uh for numberings to the Kings for number 31 and 59 Besides the Kings will get 31 and 59 Wait for Sid to move
I You know what i saw was it George Lac I think said he said
George Lorac
Hey Sean this reminds me a little bit of when the Stars traded down to get and picked up the Stanov player Sorry Yeah Traded down Wyatt to get the Stan Coven pick
What is he doing like what is he a
I have no idea I honestly don’t know I when he was in Edmonton I happened to be in Oh my
Yeah Yeah Um
Hey Luds can I get a bing bong bing bong We have another super chat from Ken Murphy Photography He’s been a regular super chatter Emergency pods
A Jamie Ben and a Craig Lewig Could be a Matt Dumbo but I think it’s a Ben and a Lewig What a marathon I’ve had time to drive an hour round trip to DQ and Wendy’s Lots of laughter You boys do a great job Bring on Wisconsin Luds
You get a You get a
We have Wisconsin Luds by Monday
Bring it on on Monday
No Minnesota Luds on Monday right
luds Luds will be in Minnesota before we start
And will you be Wisconsin will be up north somewhere
i will be I’m hoping What time is the show on Monday
two o’clock
Two probably
I’m shooting to be in Wisconsin on that day So not in Minneapolis
I don’t know
To be determined
TBD
Okay
But will you be here nope
Monday I will be So we’re all remote
I’ll be remote
Nice
Yeah Love it
And we don’t know what yet what Sean’s schedule is for next week He uh he will
I’ll out the reporter because you guys know who he is from Twitter I believe So I texted that to Scott Mclofflin and he said quote “No.” And then he said “And Crosby is going to the AS.” There there there are some
Sean do you want to weigh in on that one there are there is some noise as sorry this is not going to the ass potentially that there might be that maybe something might be happening with Sydney Crosby
How was that
okay now it’s time for Sean to smash that
He’s going Sean
Crosby’s agent has been defend debunking that all night and texting people saying that that is not the case So the Crosby to that avalanche thing is but is that does that mean Crosby to nowhere or to nowhere else or does that just mean to Colorado
he wants I don’t know how many times Sydney Crosby wants has wants to be a lifetime Penguin right i don’t know how many times he has to say that That’s
Yeah
Do you think there’s any I mean there’s no way Yeah there’s no way he’s going to other than international competition that Crosby and McKinnon are going to be on the same team
I mean Colorado likes to trade their best players So maybe they’ll trade McKinnon to Pittsburgh
especially after okay after especially after thing that they’re doing now They’re moving every
rebuilding
They’re the only team I would say in the NHL that is in a fullblown tear down start from the studs up
I mean
that’s what they’re doing They’re they’re a little bit behind San Jose and Chicago but not
San Jose ahead of them San Jose because they started at least got a couple skilled guys there because of the last couple of drafts Yeah
Yeah Yeah
So let’s see The Penguins pick is in that they traded in to get from LA Oh we got to reset the whole clock again because they traded the pick I love that Oh my god
Love that
Is that Chris Latang’s son that’s out there i think it is He was out with his dad the previous Chris Chris grew tired of of walking onto the stage
Yeah Now that kid’s like “Oh I’m out here hanging out with Gary Bman.” Oh Will Harkov There we go There’s there’s a Texas tie who I said Sean earlier I was really impressed
that looked handsome
with his game at the U8s I I liked the size and the He just looked like he played a physical
Yeah
into it brand right what is that
my wine My wine
You’re giving Sam Cabernet after three and a half hours
It’s a Cabernet 7
Do you have any idea what you’ve done you just fed the Gremlins Hey Sean is Will Horov related to Shawn at all
it’s his son
Okay Did Did there any remote chance
that Sean Shawn Horov was on the TV before
yes
See what that was him
I told you that looked like him
He is the assistant GM for Detroit
No I know But that was that looked nothing like him
Who did I not tell you that looked like Horcraftoft
It did not look like him You’re talking about Will Are you talking about when Sean I thought
there was a guy they didn’t put the name on under his under I said I think that’s Sean
Hark showed him on the screen
No no no before this was like this was like 15 minutes ago
I
and he wasn’t there I don’t think
no he wasn’t it was a guy it was a guy remote
his dad is there
oh then maybe he maybe that is he shaved head too
same guy we saw before
Sean definitely has hair
yeah it wasn’t him talking about two different things no you and I are talking about the same guy I thought was it was not Horos Buds and I have an internal
Yeah you are So Sam was right again
The writer was right
Hey nice
I I don’t understand this The substack writer was
happy for William Horov I just I don’t understand him going this early
You think he’s a later round pick
uh we had And once again obviously ours isn’t the set range thing but like we had him at 57
Is he on silent mode again
no it’s just No it’s the speakers are just
Why don’t we just get We just got our bosses over here chatter boxing so we can’t hear our guests Yeah
Hey can we get subtitles up here when Sean’s talking he’s not just the speaker So quiet He’s got he’s got a big mic
The credit to uh the one thing Horov did this year and it’s probably how he got into the first round Honestly was he left the NTDP um after Christmas played the second half of his draft year at Michigan
That would be nice for the last two and a half hours Keep going Sean
And so credit So he bas he he bet on himself by leaving NTDP halfway through the year going to play a college game through the end of the the season and that’s really how he ended up getting kind of pulling himself into first round range because teams liked that he went and challenged himself that way So so
he’s listed him at 65 now I thought I last saw him at 6’4 The kid might still be growing but
pretty cool like uh I know Sean Horov didn’t spend a ton of time as a Dallas star but
he was uh it was early when I first got to to Dallas He was he was brought in
what year
15 16 I think or 14 15
Yeah right around that That sort of range And uh
I mean Sean Horov is a super awesome guy Really first class And I’m telling I I just repeat it again from the limited time I watched him play up in Fris at the U8s He was one of the guys that popped to me for the US team I thought he looked really impressive out there Big strong kid and willing to throw his body around but not recklessly right i thought that was smart
Let’s do our uh let’s do our our fiddler check-in Any Sean you expecting him to go here now in the last what do we have seven picks left
i would have I would have expected him to go before Horhoff So yes it’s an it’s an possibility Um he’s one of the guys that we one of the remaining guys we still have as a first round as a first round grade here So
um
yeah they’re they’re two two picks for or one pick for now next round
Oh that’s where or no
no no they’re next right after they after Chicago
Uh yes Luds Nashville’s pick 26 is from Vegas via San Jose
So if this is if it’s happening so you’re thinking that maybe there Okay By the way San Jose will pick 30th on the pick from Dallas as part of the Granland and the CC trade
All right Uh I’ve been sitting in this chair for three and a half hours without standing up So I’m going to just stand up quickly to see if Well no I don’t need to use the restrooms
I’ve been in the bathroom five times since we started the show
and I’ve been drinking water the whole time But how
sam you might you low key like
I have a problem
Let’s get the flow checked out
No I have a problem But like that’s crazy right can we all drink half hours without going to the bathroom and he ate and he drank water And that’s wild man
This Okay
Sean can I can I do a Bruins question again
sit down
Well real quick has Has Owen gone through the story yet of how he called the longest game in AHL history without using the bathroom like that was like a full like he called like a six overtime game playbyplay without using the bathroom
I don’t think so
That’s a long time
Where uh it was the game that Michael Leighton made 100 say or faced 100 shots The shot counter actually rolled over from 99 to zero because there was you could not uh because there wasn’t triple digits You couldn’t do triple digits on the shots So
that’s crazy
Well you know Scott Hansen doesn’t go to the bathroom every every Sunday from approximately 12:55 p.m Pacific to 7:30 Pacific for the last 12 years
I don’t get it Like I wake up I wake up two times during the night
Oh me too
Oh no I’m actually alarmed
But I’m not Damn I’m alarmed by my flow issues at this age
Sam I am very worried about you
I I would be too I mean
maybe maybe you know what maybe it’s cuz of the new appendix they gave me That’s probably what it is
Maybe
Did they give you like a pig appendix or something
yeah they told me They didn’t tell me where it came from I think Robert came to visit me I think they took it from him and they gave it to me
That was enough to donate an organ without telling you
Yes
Like he would just do it and not
find out 20 years later
I will say when I worked in the TV truck you had to hold it for a while That’s crazy I would get I would be fired immediately Especially with baseball you just never really knew And so sometimes like in between innings it’s like I got to run super fast Yeah
Or you just What was the talk to Josh about this a lot and he was he was talking no Josh Pogarod for the the playbyplay He would talk about how there’d be certain rinks where you just like
you have like one minute to get there and and just sprint across Like it’s that’s crazy I would be so bad at that
Yeah
I mean Aman’s gone in a bottle before I don’t know if it was on the air It might have been during a break
Have you imagine you just hear it as a commentator I thought you meant like as an actual football player I was like
what is that
there’s a lot going on there
Luds did you ever have in your I know you were only in the booth for a couple years Did you ever have any close calls from a bathroom standpoint close calls from a bathroom standpoint but you had to hold it for too long when you were a color in the color booth
I just pee wherever I’m at Like in the booth Put your Gatorade bottle on No
No Why are you talking about calling games or stuff like that
Yeah
Yeah
Like if you’re in the booth
or would you go during the I mean I guess you were you were in the NHL booth so it probably wasn’t super Did you ever go on the bench or on the ice
yeah No No I mean
Oh the Chicago pick is in I know
I mean obviously you got a whole intermission So yeah No not that I can
Yeah Well
not like you that leaves your leaves your post like in the middle of a sentence and go That was my That was my Paul Pierce moment
That was a Wendy’s Management had to manage a wheelchair for me
Remember No this is a Wendy’s Frost You remember what it was
you remember Shaq when he just disappeared off the desk It just ran across So that was
If we had a camera from the producers seat down this hallway I would have been doing the Lamar Jackson after I had that Frosty doing like the sideways like my knees aren’t binging at all
It’s actually an emergency That’s awesome Sean
We have gone This is what happened Sean They tell us three hours and it goes three and a half We talked to Mark at the back
Three and a half hours on this and we still have seven
We’re in Dulu Dulu hours
I have I have breaking news Sean Shapiro says we can never do this type of draft again Please
Are we talking about us no Yeah he’s Sean’s talking about both
Great This is great
We cannot do this The people must hate this
People are tuned in and watching Well that doesn’t mean they’re watching They’re just tuned in They’re probably chatting with each other Yeah that’s what that’s why they tuned in
I’m I’m not watching this video because it’s going to be too loud But apparently they Jenko and the whole team surprised Jim Nil with the award by saying
fiance’s in the chat
by saying Oh no way by saying let’s get let’s do let’s do our annual get together at a dinner and then surprised him and told him that he got the award
Well how about if Mark Jenko surprises everybody and gets a power forward huh as my
What did Katie say
i don’t have any money What did Katie say i can’t read it
Uh Katie said “Logged on and immediately heard potty talk Glad not much has changed.”
Yeah
you logged on at the wrong time Katie
I’m trying
Wait a second They’re at the NHL draft and they decided to go out for dinner
Well they had No this is pretty
Well they had four hours I guess they could
He knew this already cuz remember eyeballed us
Yeah eyeballed
I thought you meant they went to dinner
Eyeballed us
Eyeballed Singular So what are you up to Sean
well I am uh still waiting for this uh Oh we just had a Moskegan lumberjack get taken The collab nastil So
are there any famous like NHL bathroom stories like the Paul Pierce and the Lamar Jackson is there anything like that
what did Lamar Jackson do
you guys just go like every intermission like how long does it take to take all the pads off to go you don’t have to
Oh
Oh you got a zipper on your pants
Well you just pull your sock down and
Okay never mind I I should know how this question
Chris Johnson from uh The Athletic says “Great news for retired players included in the NHL’s new CBA A $4 million annual emergency healthcare and wellness fund being established for them Do you get included in that?”
$4 million annual emergency healthcare and wellness for retired players
It’s not a test Does Leds get part of this
well I think Luds is involved
I got travel expenses too Well wait What does that mean 4 million That’s 4 million for everybody that’s played now until the 1800s
Like what does that mean sean do you know Can you clear that up or No
I I don’t know how I don’t know how the emergency fund works but like isn’t the thing where like you can’t touch your
We need subtitles again If you’re a player If you’re a player you can’t
Oh there you go
I don’t think you can touch your pension until you’re 55 right like I think it’s something where if you take if you take early from it you don’t get the full thing or whatever Like there’s a there’s there’s a lot of kind of from a PA perspective I know that’s something that Marty Walsh had actually talked about of trying to figure out a better solution for stuff for retired players So I don’t know if four million in one slush fund is enough to cover that many players Like that’s a that’s that’s a that could be used it could be but it so that’s a start at least You know I I was uh listening this morning for a little bit I think it was on the I was driving somewhere Oh I was going to the ring but I heard uh Bruce Budro talking And I don’t even know why this reminded me of anything but he was actually talking about Matt Dumbo And the question was
are they going to keep him
well I doubt it but the question was is is what happened to Matt Dumba and and and Bruce had said you know I I had him in Minnesota and it was like I don’t remember what year it was but he had gotten hit and then he got into a fight with uh Matthew Kachchuck and he said he he tore a bicep muscle or something like that and at that point it was in December and he had already had 12 goals and he said he was such a good player He did this he was physical got up in the play and he goes when and he missed the whole season How many goals did he have when he got here
well he was out for the rest of the year So he had he had 12 up to the beginning of December And then apparently he goes you know he missed the whole year and then he came back and he goes I don’t know He was never the same
Did you ever have like a major injury like in your career
davis
No
No My major injury was uh it was called Sha Perry That was my major injury Did you ever have a breakaway out of the box with like half
I did one day I I did country music
And this is your favorite story John
It’s the only one I know
When I’ve heard when all my teammates were yelling dump it in and change Yeah And I listened to him and I did
Riker Lee It was not Fids
to Nashville
That’s what I was kind of hoping it would be there Going to Madison from Madison
Now Fids is lower than what they projected him Not necessarily
Mo I mean most had him in the first round So many of these things these guys that project all these people they’re all over the map There’s anywhere from for Fizz was anywhere from 20 to 27
But don’t you think as a matter of fact we had a guy on this show who I kind of respect
and Craig Button
he’s not talking about me
And so I asked man Yep And he did not say it would probably be that early which I don’t know if any of these guys really know It’s always up to the GM So
Mhm Fence is it’s depends on like so we had him at 23 for elite prospects but
get bigger
Craig had him at 40 Craig Buttonham at 40
Why why every time Sean talks there’s a a clock that goes around It’s the pick
He just talks about all the picks are happening
Oh yeah
Yeah um his like around 27 was the like if you did the consolidated average ranking which we you which is where we dump about 15 different rankings in and then it gives out that number like 27 was where bing
So we’re right at a spot where actually he next it would make sense for his consolidated rankings
Cat let’s go Uh five
Can we
five is Neils yeah And uh the
I feel like it’s not I feel like it’s not
Uh oh Right Okay And it’s from
Read it Read it in your head first
Well wouldn’t that be a Niels Lungquist
any chance
read it in your head first Oh yeah I don’t know if we can put that I don’t think we can read it
Any chance Rupe
yeah but it’s okay We didn’t read We didn’t say We didn’t say it
It was up for two seconds
It was on the chat anyway We didn’t say it Hey thank you for the super chat We’re not sure we can read a bunch of I don’t think you can use one of the words
Wahoos
Wait Wait What what’s the part you can’t read back in Edmonton
Wait I’m not going to say it to you
I know Well spell it because as soon as we tell Luds
he’s going to say it
Yeah
No because I’m reading it right off the screen I’m reading it It says “Any chance take off the screen.” Craig what happened
we took it off the screen so you wouldn’t say it
Why do we do that hey how about we do this Luds does Rope is Rope Hins disappointed that nobody backed him up after his slash the two different slashes to his
that would be a great question for Rupe I I don’t know if you’re
To be honest with you I I don’t
to be totally honest with you
I don’t think they really
Oh hang on Okay fair enough
It would bother most of us but I I don’t think that that’s their like come into the room Are you serious nobody’s I don’t think anybody would really do that Okay I’ll have one more That’s it
All right What I like how I asked Luds I was like “Do you want another beer?” He goes “Okay.” It’s like the happiest tripping I’ve ever heard Whenever you ask beer I think all the other cameras are dead Do we think
Do we think you think anyone has tuned in to uh upset that they can’t be watching the PFL i just want to see the boost whenever they said they bumped ESPNU I will I will say one thing No matter what we do no matter who sits in these chairs we have 200 people still watching this show
I will say it hasn’t got to the point where a pick is like a Taco Bell taco like Nicole Yic back in the day
Did you just say tacos oh Bob’s trying to hit the
There Just play the button the play button on the screen there We didn’t program him in there because we had to make a new profile
Bobby you need help i’ll come out and help
Sure Go Luds Can’t break it any more than it’s already broken
What did you break it
no There Okay You see in the middle of the screen
they’re all in there
Get ready boys Okay What What round are we in
we are the fifth at least
So the Capitals are on
round How many picks we have 27
27th pick So we have
We only got five left Five left
I was going to go to
only only 32
I know That’s We only got five under till the Stars make their first pick
Yes we’re almost there I I legit This is not a joke either When I see that like that’s easy math right you’re like 27 to 32
I legit have to go “Okay 27 28 29 30 3.” Like I have to say it out loud
Well sometimes you don’t know Is 27 already done or is that counting 27 28 29 30 Thick is in Thick is in for Washington So let’s get moving on this
That’s why I have to do it out loud because it’s six not Oh yeah
Oh yeah There you go
Bobby’s at the controls
I’m really glad that that wasn’t just me that has that issue
He’s living his best life and 2.0s over here It’s good Try it Eat the Eat the last bit of it I mean I’m not going to lie I ate a donut and a half so please help yourself Well that sucks We have a We have a bing bong We want to hit it Bing bong
Bing bong And then can you pop it up screen if you tap There you go
From Marshall second we have a Miro Hkin in 99 Cupier Kudos to y’all for pulling through this also producer I think that’s to
that’s to John
the guy who’s not here anymore
Or we could say it’s to Bobby Producer Bobby
John you’re getting a shout out from Marshall second Did I read that super chat like so professionally though sounded just like that That was well done
Was it Can we read the last bing bong i still want to I don’t I don’t want to read it I just want to look at it I’m trying to figure out what happened
Look that up
What the word What’s the word spell the word Do I have to play any of these right now
you’re gonna say it Don’t say it
Yeah People going to hear it
No that No no but that that’s my buddy’s nickname That like it’s not a bad What do you think that
it’s not good
implies
i just read what it means
Oh no You’re talking
No just the first word
We can talk about this later
Yeah talk about it
Based off the American abstract painter I believe right read that last couple lines
Oh no We did that one
Don’t read the whole first thing Just like the last line
I think I broke it Don’t No
Well I need to respond to Marshall still by the way So there’s a there exists a hockey puck that has a Dallas Stars logo on it that on one side has my autograph on it and on the other side has Craig Lewig’s autograph
Legend Which one’s Yeah Which one’s better it was it was by Marshall 2nd at the uh the event
at the at the watch along or at the cause of
at the
I took your I took your ticket that that night
Where was I i don’t know Probably
I was drugged Sorry to laugh
I was drug No I was good I was drugged up I came on I came with the microphone for Yeah Yeah
I’m like this right now That and some wine It’s a lot
I’ll tell you later Get that out of here
Yeah There you go
Maybe that’s why his nickname he’s getting so close to saying things he’s not supposed to say
No I never cut you off
Microphone is here
I’m cutting you off
No no I’ve never heard that That one’s right here It’s good Right There’s some more Wow that’s a that’s a good hockey name right there Lyndon Lakovich
Lynon Lakovich
I like the Lyndon with the Y too
So what do you know about We had him at 14 actually So that’s a pretty good uh
that’s that’s a pretty good pickup for for Washington at that range Um we probably we we kind of put him in the 10 to 14 range for value for a draft kind of similar playing style to a Quinton Biffield type So uh 65 two 200 pounds Um lot of skill-wise one of the top six seven probably individual skill players in the draft Consistency was an issue So this is a really good pick for Washington from a perspective of timing and um being able to take some time with a guy like this that would have gone much earlier based off probably skill John to that end there’s a lot of times you hear people talking about oh you don’t need to value your late first round picks for teams that make it to the second or third round because they’re so low It’s it’s not the same as the top 15 or so but
that’s not always the case You can still find really good NHL talent
well past 15 or 20 right
yeah you can You can And it’s you it’s there’s less certainty but you still get the there’s definitely spaces for all of that So hold on I’m getting us uh I’m getting I’m bringing I’m I’m I’m sending a link to uh I’m live producing her show right now I’m sending a link to Cam who’s on the draft floor who can tell us how awful it is in person right now
Oh I can’t wait
So
so yeah I No he’s sending it to Cam but be ready because Cam Robinson from Elite Prospects may be joining via ecam
Yeah Can you smell Lud’s food from from your seat Sam it’s all I can smell right now
Is that the maple bacon
spilled it all over his computer So
the the donut break the microphone
The donut it down
Okay I heard it
Hi Kendra Yes I came back and sat down
That computer has been
Harry just said Owen Newkerk is back and I already miss cat
I agree
Rude That was good
I’m still here
She had good insight The best Only the best
Yeah great takes It kept my seat warm too It’s nice and toasty with this down
We I I love how with how long this draft has gone Roger Mc
these chairs do not breathe It’s not on you It’s probably my warmth still lingering
Roger McQueen has had enough time with how long this draft has gone to go have an entire day at Disney since getting drafted
He got a helicopter ride from the draft to Disneyland
I don’t know I just
like is that by far the most interesting that thing that’s happened at the draft is that one of the picks got selected and then helicoptered to Disneyland
That’s got Did you think like were they going to do that with their first pick or was it just cuz
John you lived in LA did you go to Disneyland when you were there uh I went to you well the AMC with the 40 millimeter was at Universal Studios in North Carolina I went there Anaheim where the House of Blues is at at Disney World Is that
No Disney World is in Orlando
No Disneyland is then I went to the House of Blues there to see Green Day once
Oh nice
Very short notice
I want to ask have you describe to I was going to do it to LS but also to Sam what the 40 millimeter means Uh it’s a different format of movies and the screen is much closer to like a square It’s very It’s definitely It’s not a full square It’s like a rectangle But like if you’ve seen the shot in Dune part two where all the sand worms come flying out Yes
You’re missing like half the screen if you don’t see it in 40 mm There’s a whole another worm that just isn’t
or what
uh both The formats when a movie is filmed in 40 millimeter and they do
he is this
I have no idea what I’m talking about
Sorry tell you
Hold on We have an actual hockey guest So I’m going to get off the set and stop talking about Desert Worms right now
When when this draft started Cam didn’t have didn’t have a beard That’s how long it’s been At least it wasn’t this gray That’s for sure
So I’d like to formally welcome Cam Robinson from Elite Prospects to the show Cam we haven’t actually met but it I’ve heard much about you from Sean Almost all good things
I don’t believe that Yeah
So Cam I’m Owen This is Sam and Craig Lewig is off screen because he’s taking advantage of not being on right now Um Sean
prefaced you coming on by saying you’re going to tell us because you’re in person down in LA just how fantastic this draft format is for everybody I mean home run right like we’re never going back This has been Tech’s been on point Tight tight windows like they have been this has been brutal I live for this This is literally like my Christmas morning This is all year I wait for this I can’t get enough I usually get like 30,000 steps walking around sch smoozing with all the guys and the GMs and everybody I’m bored I just want to I just want to get out of here and go get a drink and maybe a bite to eat Like this has never happened at a draft before I don’t see how they can run it back again
Well you were you at the uh at the Sphere in Las Vegas last year
I was Yes
Talk about the complete polar opposites right
that was a good time That was a very good time at the Sphere I mean every draft I’ve ever been to and I think it’s you know we’re we’re on two hands now anyways and it’s uh they’ve all been much better And now you know Steve Mayor does a great job who runs the NHL events and I’m not putting this on him at all You know this the Peacock Theater it’s a cool venue The pick is in Um
you’re good You can keep going
All right I’ll keep talking Uh you know like the setup for us the for for the media is is pretty clean We got good sight lines The internet’s been working well I mean I’m talking to you guys right now and I’m in a little hole between the the press rooms Um so you know they they they did all they could do but it’s just like how awkward is it having these kids talking with the delay and the text Hey how’s it going good Thanks You know it’s it’s just painful stuff As soon as Schaeer got after after one it’s just been brutal So um yes every other draft has been far more successful than this one
Mhm
What do we got what’s the pick i can’t say that name Sasha Sasha
Bumian Sasha wins
I love love a good uh love a good hockey Easter though Anytime Dynamite in Swedish I love it Thank you So Cam
Cam what do we Go ahead
Oh go ahead Sean
I was gonna I said Cam I was going to say what are we thinking of uh what do we think of Lovich going where are they going when you’re looking at some of these guys basically just dunk on the Penguins for me Just Just dunk on the Penguins I I had a feeling you were going to team me up for that too I mean who who lost the day so far it’s like good gracious I mean talk about leaving some meat on the bone right with those picks Like let’s just start with Ben Kindle who I actually like I like Ben Kindle but you can’t look me straight in the eye and tell me he’s going to be a center in the NHL So now you got yourself an undersized playmaking winger Why not get Victor Ecklan who has who has competitiveness and he’s hard skill and you let that guy slip past you Um I I yes I have not I’ve not enjoyed I think that Pittsburgh they you know getting more quantity is is a good thing So trading back from 12 is like whatever but they need quality and and they’ve missed the the boat on that So you know the Islanders though yeah they gave away a number one right-handed defenseman today but you know they’re walking out of here with Schaefer and Ecklland and Kahan Aches Like those guys are the winners And like offhand it’s don’t love Philly’s draft Don’t love Pennsylvania didn’t didn’t do so great Porter Mortone is obviously a good player but Pennsylvania they took one on the chin a bit here tonight
Cam what do you think about Dallas’s draft so far i mean as good as Minnesota’s anyways right i have a similar question to ask
Yeah
So Dallas doesn’t pick until 94 late in the third round
Yeah
What what what’s out there i asked this to Stephen Ellis We had him from Daily Face Off yesterday
Is there anything to be excited about it towards the you know late 90s early 100s in this draft
yeah absolutely I mean ask me a pick 92 and I’ll have some something real juicy to tell you But uh how about how about how about how about Jacob Romach hey Sean We can get maybe we can get maybe we can get him Rom back there at 94 or whatever 93 That’d be a good one Big towering pivot from the USHL out of Lincoln I think he’s going to slip aways That could be fun
Yeah Ron I like Romack there That’s the I mean you you’re trying to figure out where all these are going to go right like
no idea Yeah
right No no no no I I’m not asking about a specific name It’s more of a
what what do you think what kind of profile of what can you hope to expect for value not not a specific name because
I still believe that in the top three rounds you can get NHL regulars these days because of how comprehensive global scouting has become over the last 10 to 15 years You’re not finding those you know Jamie Ben slipping through to rounds five six seven like you used to But you’re also you know once you get into the fourth round and beyond it doesn’t seem like there are as many of those NHL regulars in the later rounds that you used to see
Yeah Well let me ask you this Do you like scratch and win tickets do you like lottery tickets because that’s what you’re getting
Yeah That’s what you’re getting at 90 at 93 right you’re getting you’re getting yourself maybe you’re splurging and you’re getting the $2 one Um and and you’re hoping to walk away with a little something out of that because it is it’s a dart right at that point of the draft it’s a dart and you trust your scouting staff and you be like “Hey let’s volume it out We can get one player out of this draft class when we’re picking from the third round on that’s a win because statistically speaking you’re going to walk away with no players if you’re your first pick is in the third.”
Cam how do you how do you look at the the Stars draft history they’ve been around here that fans are pretty happy with how Jim Nil has done things and and what they’ve brought up within their own organization So I’m curious your your thoughts on their history in the last I don’t know five 10 years They’ve been killing it They’ve been killing it right like I mean they they completely transformed their entire team in what was that 2018
17 Thank you Yeah Mero and Robo and Otter right like that was incredible And then they go and they get Johnson and they get Stankov right and whatever year that was 20 or 19 Um so no I think that they’ve they’ve done excellent work in the past Um you know Pixel I even like that They I like that pick Harley like they they’ve they’ve they’ve pulled some really good first round picks and not everybody can say that especially when you’re not drafting at the top of the class right we see constantly guys miss or they just don’t get to the level that you hope that they’re going to get to And and Dallas seems to consistently find guys that outkick their coverage that outkick their draft slot And that’s how you have a contender year over year And that’s what you know they’ve been building and doing One of the other things I know I’m not trying to dunk on the NHL because again they chose this It sounds like
they make it easy though They make
Well I’m going to I’m going to anyway
But it it it seems like we’ve been hearing for months now that everybody wants to go back even before the experience of the last four hours as I’d like to point out But do you feel like there’s something lost from the pageantry of it all let alone the timing of it by not seeing that first round pick go on stage with all the dignitaries from each team as they select them oh absolutely And like you know I feel bad for the kids It’s like you know this was better than the COVID years at least Um but it’s like you know and yeah it was cool that you know James Haggin had Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore the pick Like that was pretty neat and like you know certain moments and obviously Matthew Schaefer at the top that was special Um but I think it might have been even more special if if it was the old way and I think that it’s it’s a loss for the fans in the building I think it’s a loss for people at home watching It’s absolutely a loss for for us here the media Um our our interactions like normally when the draft happens it’s like the NHL takes over a city
Yeah
And they take over big cities right it like quite literally they they consume it Everybody knows it’s like you’re walking around you’re meeting with people and everywhere you go you’re running into somebody and you’re chatting and that’s that hasn’t been the case It’s like the draft has kind of taken over LA live a little bit a little bit but if you walk a block away nobody knows that the NHL draft is going on here right now So it’s it’s I think it’s everybody’s felt that Um you know I asked Gary Bman today at the the press conference like because they’re going to poll all the teams this summer to see if they want to go back and and I said Gary what’s the mechanism in place does it need to be 50% does it need to be 75 does it need to be unanimous um and he wouldn’t give me a straight answer He did tell me that it was 26 to6 to vote for this to change to the decentralized version um originally Um but he just said basically if the clubs overwhelmingly want to go back then we’ll go back And so take that as you will What what overwhelming
it needs to be 26 to6 the other way
Did Bman do what he normally does which is also point out as blatantly as possible that he was not for this on TV Yeah
I’m out there I’m just on TV
Cam’s on TV right now being accosted by Mickey Mouse or somebody there But did did Betman do what he has done a handful of times since that that decision to blatantly say to the public he did not want this and he was not in favor of this change
yes he did Absolutely Did he he basically said he’s like you know I told him you know if you want to do this we’ll do this
Um so yeah he threw that out there again and then you know he said and if they want to go back we’ll go back We’re here and I love that he just keeps triple downing on that like he was on his game Yeah Yeah Yeah Luds
You got anything for Cam
no I like listening to you guys
Yeah
Fucking I love Cam He’s fucking going a mile a minute here I love it
He’s got I’m just getting warmed up
L just got yelled at for profanity
We got We had no cursing on this whole show until Cam got him all fired up and ready to go
So true L dropped an
I’m like I wish I was in LA right now him and I be downtown
Oh you guys will be having some fun that’s for sure
You don’t want to go downtown
Yes I’ve been down there Sorry Yeah
Oh another trade alert Yay Fun
We got making this
That delays us again
Another trade
Oh god
What do you got Sean
oh Chicago’s moved into Carolina’s pick So Carolina moved We saw that coming
Yeah exactly We We knew that was coming ago Number one on the remaining list
He’s been up there like 500 I mocked Carolina to
I I mocked Carolina to trade back and not
Carolina quite literally the mock draft pick Yeah
What do we have four four left Cam does does Does Fidler go
now can go carolina wouldn’t
he should he should go I you know he was in my first round but I think you know in a normal draft he’s probably more like an early day two kid but in this class he should probably be a late one So um especially with D I I think he should go but we’ll see This every This is banana pancakes over here this board Like you couldn’t you couldn’t have drawn this up
That’s a great Jack Johnson reference by the way I appreciate it
Cam when you’re going through making your mocks trying to build your boards and there’s thin margins between players How do you kind of make your decisions because there are margins for error here with these kids I mean you try especially like the most recent one I I released there yesterday is you try to get as much information as you can get from teams from agents you know from players Like I was talking to players like who you getting good vibes off of like you know who did you talk to most recently who’s been coming back to try to you know get a get a gauge on if you’re going to be available and if you you’re a fit Um and you try to you try to work your way down from there And then sometimes you just have no information and you just try to look for an organizational fit Um you look at past drafting history you look at physical and statistical profiles and you try to make educated guesses and then you throw it out the window when it all goes to hell after you know the fourth pick
Yeah
I feel like you could go
do we think uh
Cam do we think on that front do we think the uh just because obviously you know we know this is my Eric Do we think the hip is what’s the reason we haven’t seen Ravensburg go yet
yeah Yeah that’s 100% what’s going on I had a bunch of teams say that it’s been a concern um that it hasn’t gotten better
Um and that yeah he he you know I had one team say that you know he kind of slipped down to you know fourth or fifth on their goalie board which you know consensus number one goalie for much of the year and and yeah he’s still waiting there
Yeah To my earlier question can you go back to your previous mocks years ago like whether it’s last year year before three five years down behind or do you just drive yourself insane if you spend too much time looking at how you rated guys in the past
yeah No Mox No I don’t ever look at him again Although I did go six for six last year to start the draft and so like that gave me all the fuzzies But I’ll I’ll never look at another one again I went four for four to start today and then again it it all went out the window But uh no I don’t I don’t like to look I don’t like to look back at those It usually just causes pains Nothing Led’s made it L’s made it to hour one
No we’re on hour five right now
He’s done We are on uh
Well no I’ve I’ve never I’ve told you guys I don’t know what the hell’s going on here Like
Well I mean I barely knew the first five guys
No no no I’m just teasing you Cam My next one is what are you looking at from day two who’s uh dropped who’s been out who’s who’s an absolute steal in your mind that hasn’t gone that could be what they call that quote unquote first round talent getting round two or beyond Here’s the thing is that when I’m making my board here and same with like our our EP board at Elite Pro there is that you get outside of like 2021 it’s like I don’t feel like any of these guys are first rounders Um and so so it’s like that’s why we’re seeing that’s why we saw Adrianov go to Columbus there It’s that like they didn’t like anybody They didn’t think any of them were first rounders so why not swing on the Russian kid um Russian goalie
so you know I don’t know if there’s anyone there that really like turns my crank Colin Potter’s got wheels for days you know Malcolm Spence you know he’s a a little surprising he’s still out there but I did I did a bold predictions article that came out today and I asked a bunch of teamside people executives and scouts to give me a bold prediction of their own and one of them was Malcolm Spence folds today too So I mean I guess it’s not that big a surprise in the industry as well So there’s there’s going to be some good names that are going to be left for tomorrow Um you know Fiddler’s one of them as well Max Sichka is a really talented big big defenseman too who’s probably going to be available tomorrow So there’s definitely going to be some assets out there but oftentimes we’ll see you know it wasn’t that long ago where I was just like chomping at the bit and shouting for somebody take Logan Stankov and this kid should be gone in the teens and there he’s going to be in the 40s right there’s nobody like that this year
Yeah
Hey Sean you were talking about that when you guys were building your board saying when you have you don’t have 32 A rated players or first round rated and that that’s going to continue You don’t don’t have 32 second round rated players right
correct It’s He just keeps
Yeah
this is uh this this kid at least that just went Mason West is at least the most interesting kid in this draft from a perspective of a he’s a three-star college football recruit was and is going to play one more year He’s only a junior in high school He’s going to play one more year of high school football and then go to finish play USAHL and then go to Michigan State to play hockey next year Cam I remember you were at the combine when everyone was talking about Mason and they were wondering if he was actually going to pick hockey or football And so this kid at least I I I like this pick by Chicago At least this one’s at least interesting You know what’s even more interesting about this kid is that he has never taken hockey seriously and he just kind of figured out that like oh I’m actually really good at this Maybe I should like go for hockey He did he didn’t know it was his draft year this year
cuz he’s a junior high school I kid I kid you not I kid you not I kid you Mason West had no idea it was his draft year He didn’t know He didn’t know who was in the Stanley Cup finals this year
Yeah
I’m still not even sure I did
So Luds tell Cam you already told the story to our viewers but Cam wasn’t here I He would probably love to hear your draftier story if you would indulge us
Well what the f like
No just tell him He It’s a It’s interesting to hear that
It’s not interesting Cam I don’t know why they want me to tell this story all the time I was working at a high I went to North Dakota at the end of my my uh freshman year
I walked on um apparently I got drafted My coach told me but I was working a hockey school and um it was in June or July and I got a call from the coach and he said “Luds I need to see you in the office.” Which is never a good thing because I
No
Anyway so I got in there and he said “Hey just want to let you know you’ve been drafted.” And I said “Okay cool.” And uh he goes “No I think it’s you know don’t think about.” No what he said to me he goes “Don’t think about leaving school right now.” We just got done wash winning a national championship Don’t think you can leave right now I said “Coach I never even thought about playing pro hockey to start with.” And we talked for a couple minutes He said “Okay.” And I walked out the door I got out the door and he yelled at me and he says “Hey come here.” He goes “You want to know who drafted you?” And I said “Oh yeah.” I said “Yeah sure.” And he goes “Uh,” he says “Mreal.” And I kind of looked at him I went “Yeah okay Good one.” Like I’m going to ever play there So and and the funny well there’s even more to that story to be honest with you So Cam how much time you got how much time we got here we got We got nine more rounds
We got another half hour at least
So so Cam here’s the deal So I walked on to the University of North Dakota because the Bob Johnson pulled his damn scholarship from me because I didn’t he didn’t realize that I didn’t have a 2.5 grade point average or was at the time Yeah
So then I went to North Dakota I walked down there they have a 2.0 So I’m I’m a shoein I think So I get there and at the end of the first semester Gino coach comes in and he goes “Uh I need to talk to you.” One of the first convers He goes “Mr Lutter do you know what our grade point average is at the University of North Dakota?” I said “Yeah I do It’s two because I couldn’t get in at the 2.5.” And he goes he goes “Yeah well you’re not even you’re not even close You’re at 08.” And I said I said I didn’t even know if that was good or bad to be totally honest with you I’m like “Oh cool.”
So he goes “I will do your classes for you from now on.” So anyway we win the national championship thing
As soon as we Yeah illegal I heard that a few years later So after we win the championship Gino comes in he knocks on the door and he said “Lud I need to talk to you.” I go out in the hall and he goes “Don’t think about leaving all this kind of shit.” I said “No I’m good I’m not going to coach.” So I said “None of this stuff I don’t leave.” So then we skip a year and then our my third year we win the national championship again again in the same building in RPI same knock on the door And he goes “Lutter come on out here.” And I walk out in the hall and he goes “Remember that conversation we had two years ago.” I said “Yes I do coach.” And he goes “I want you to look down at the end of the hall down there That man’s name is Bill Waters Big man Bill Waters Toronto and stuff like that.” He goes “You’re he’s your agent now.” And I’m like “What?” He goes “You are leaving school I got no more classes for you It’s time for you to go
You have taken all the honest classes we have.” Yeah And that that was it That was done I was done And how far Cam the draft has come from the early 1980s
That sounds that sounds more entertaining than this This is all foreign to me
Yeah it does Yeah
Oh my god Sorry to bore you Cam I love that
Yeah that’s
that’s what that story was Boring
Yeah
Hey they brought the uh the wrestler back out for pick number 30 This is what the Dallas Stars pick No this is what the Dallas Stars pick would have been had they not traded for Granlin and Cece
Well I’d pick her too 30
No not the the wrestler That is a sweet belt though Oh
are you guys ahead of us wwe girl or something says WWE superstar They picked the goalie There you go
The goalie
There you go
So Sean future pairing of Ascarov and Ravensburg
Bergen Bergen
Possibly
All right Rothlessber knows it
Thanks for having me on guys Hey Cam Really appreciate it Thanks for spending some time with us It was great All right Cheers guys
See you
Good to talk
Sean you’ll have to talk to Cam later and let him know that we’re not always loopy after 5 hours of broadcast Funny though He’s a funny guy
He knows he’s been he’s been te him and I were texting about 30 minutes ago about how he was just so sad and disappointed in what this entire draft has become
Sean uh Cam briefly mentioned with Joshua Ravensburgen who’s the Prince George WHL goalie that just got drafted 30th by the Sharks about a hip injury Can you give us a little bit more about what he’s talking about
yeah So Ravensburgen is like he’s been he’s been dealing with a hemp thing that kind of lingered a little bit the second half of his season He’s
six he’s 65 He’s
Reeds plays really well For us we talked we looked at him kind of we comped him to like a Ben Bishop type of goalie but similar to a Ben Bishop type of goalie the health is already an issue at in his 6’5 frame as a as an 18-year-old So um that’s uh that’s never a good thing when you’re 18 and you’re already dealing with hip injuries and everything like that So he from a pure kind of talent play when healthy perspective he would be the top goalie on the board but there’s teams that were scared off by this this hip injury and to see how it would impact him And that’s why Columbus went see assumingly Columbus went with Andreanov earlier So um I like Ravensburg’s games a lot I like what I see Um and for San Jose to minority of Ascarov as your future number one and you can bring this guy in and now you can take a little bit of time It’s it could be a really good tandem three four years from now
I don’t remember if it was you that was saying this earlier or somebody else so forgive me if I’m misattributing it but when you talk about injuries for 18 year olds you feel like they have a better chance of of healing and being okay than later on or is it the type of injury that you’re more concerned about to me it’s the type of injury right where there’s the um I think it was I think like Mark um Marton had the back injury right or like a last year a
Well even Schaefer with a collar bone right
yeah Now a collar bone though is like a collar bone you you normally heal from right like a collar bone is a is a is a is a is a fracture It’s a freak accident It’s everything like that A
That’s one of the easiest ones to break I think
Yeah But but like a back injury a hip injury those injuries where you’re talking about that are kind of some from something that’s movement based those are the ones that cause us a little bit more concern when it comes to kind of projecting how how it’s going to impact a player right like in Dallas we’ve seen what six feels like the Stars bought like the the the value pack for hip surgeries right like saw so many players that have had hips resurfacing surgery Um and some players recover better than others to that right like we saw what we reconnected with John Clingberg during the Western Conference Final and we saw how much his all the hip stuff he went through And that’s kind of a good not cautionary tale but that’s a good way to look at it where you’d probably when you’re drafting a kid and you’re drafting a guy and you think about hips or knees or or type of impingement of a of a body part
well you’re it’s probably going to be fine for three to four years but when you’re talking first round you need value that goes five six seven years So it’s uh that’s one of the reasons that I mean for a team with it many with with multiple first round picks like San Jose has probably actually the perfect spot for to take a little bit of a risk of an injury on a on a hip on a goalie
I want to take this opportunity just to uh remind everybody that tonight’s draft broadcast here on DLS is brought to you by Empire today as our presenting sponsor And we will have a show we’re not done yet we still have two picks left
LA and Calgary 30 and 30 31 to 32 of the first round We will have a 1-hour draft show tomorrow that will be more of a recap The Stars have a bunch of picks in rounds three through seven
They don’t have a second round pick but they we will do a show I I think we’re looking somewhere in the 2:00 range
If it goes as slow as this it’s going to be four o’clock
Well that’s to be determined depending on if we’re trying to get it to the end or before
A good connection as I’m heading through Oklahoma
Yeah seriously So we are going to do something like that We don’t know if Sean will be on tomorrow’s show or not
We’ll also talk to Jim
Are you gonna be up in
Yeah
we or you will Sorry We media will talk to
I was gonna say I don’t know if we’re going to wait until the end of the draft to wait for Jim
No no no He’ll
that’s the one they’re going to pick first
He’ll do his thing somewhere somewhere towards the end
um up in Fris So that’ll be See if we get any news out of that one
The Kings are on the clock again and so the LA fans there are chanting and cheering and
go Kings Somebody made the joke earlier that we need the cartman Go Kings go
The LA fan there is cheering The pick is in
Here we go
Well Sean already knows what it is Let’s just ask Watch Calgary just uh
Wait we got NBA coming up here
Calgary’s just I don’t know who No that that’s uh
Wait that’s the uh actor who um he was the Old Spice
commercial guy What’s his name he was involved with uh the NHL awards show at the end of the regular season as well or wherever whenever that was during the playoffs
It’s not Fiddler Ah Henry Henry Bruce
Henry Bruce Wix from London
Bruce Witz
Sean how much of your house would you bet that you pronounced his last name correctly
bruce Um how much my house that I I would not bet my house on anyone’s pronunciation Yeah No no I know I’m just saying I don’t know what his last name pronunciation is I was just curious how confident you were
Bruce Witz Especially for a hockey player since five years now later they’d be like “Oh you were saying it wrong the whole time but I was just being kind about it.” Right Like
been there before
Trying to ask uh Bishell “Hey how do we say your name?” No not not it doesn’t matter How do we say your name say your name
Yeah All right
Say my name Calgary is going to trade their pick for to end the draft This guy was part of the Memorial Cup winning team
to finish this draft Yeah Jason Robertson
Oh yeah
The 32nd pick for Jason Roberts
You guys see the Twitter rumor today that Toronto is interested in Jason Robertson
Oh they’re just going to swap him
That’s been going on for like three weeks now
I mean just it was popped up again today I love I mean
was Toronto interested in Robertson I think that
for Robertson
Yeah Toronto would like
Toronto likes Robertson
Do we want them both or do we want to switch out by Nick like bring my brother home would be cool to see them play together at some point Maybe it’s here
Well if that’s the case USA Olympics Sam Sam get the Robertson brothers on the Olympic team There you go
Yes In 2020 2030 Since we are wrapping slowly down here I wanted We are slowing
Oh a full screen before we sign off
Do we have a drain sound bite
you mean a flushing toilet yes that was for Sam If you recall John definitely had a destroyer of plumbing
I I only ever used that on Streamyard though I don’t I don’t think that ever made it in studio music How Sam when you talk to Jim tomorrow Kenny Kenny’s looking pretty good for 74 Sam when you talk to Jim tomorrow you need to ask him how much he just enjoyed being able to not have to do anything tonight
Yeah
Just to be like just like just sit at home Jim did you even have your computers open in the war room or were you just were you just like you know what we’re not doing anything
Let’s watch a movie Yeah They’re up there They’re up there with passing it off You think
yeah His kids in it Yeah
Oh yeah Yeah And he’s more of a one you know one of them
delegator
Yeah Kind of just filling in till the next you know kind of stillund watching live like bravo Let’s say that like there’s still I will say for all the people that near for the nearly 200 people that have watched this whole thing live or coming in and out like
we love you guys The fact that you’re entertained by us doing what we do is pretty
pretty amazing and wild
Sean you actually look like you just ran a marathon
Do I kind of do
you look like you’re spent
Sweating
I am spent I am spent I have been
Oh I know what I want to bring up with Sean before we sign off here Sean
the prospect game that used to be the prospect tournament in Traverse City now playing in Fris It’s is it just one game still or are there
two games
two games So it’s the Red Wings Prospects and the Stars They’ve it’s it was uh was it an 18 tournament it used to be I think
you know why it’s in Fris
Why because of the threetime general manager There you go I mean why
well what are your thoughts about the change of venue and and what that means going forward for that that get together between the Red Wings and the Stars
well I’m happy for you guys I’m truthfully a little bit sad I get now two last days of uh uh my up Northern Michigan golf trip that I can write off So I a little bit sad little bit sad about that because I like going up there Um it’s uh it’s also going to be a rotation We know this year is going to be September 13th and 14th are the dates At least I know I don’t know if that’s public or not but now it is September 13th and 14th uh will be in Frisco Um and then the following year it will be back up in Traverse City And it’s uh if uh since Brad’s been dropping eyeball emojis all over the place on this maybe we text Brad and get him on and see if if this is how he starts to push to try to get uh other teams to come to Fris for that as well because we know Brad wants to host more events like this So it’s uh that’ll be the it’ll be a fun thing And uh let’s uh maybe we can position some super chats to uh to uh buy my playing ticket because we can buy it now way in advance right lots we know It would be interesting if Dallas could cultivate a prospect tournament in September with a bunch of NHL teams like they used to have in Traverse City
guys The only No but it was Jim Jim and Kenny Holland started that
Oh yeah Up in Traver City That was their whole thing That’s why it was funny We Jim got the award Kenny was just on TV and you guys were talking about it So that I threw that little nugget in there for you
You were up there covering it when there were GMs from all over the place and it was a two groups and a and a a round robin and then a knockout stage and then it slowly dwindled over the years which is and co’s part of that
Yeah
Yep All right last pick
The first Monopoly man is going to make the final pick Lenny McDonald Do you guys know what trade this pick is from
you see that year they won the Stanley Cup
this is the fourth
Is this part of the Kachchuck Uber trade
no it’s the Kachchuck It’s the Kachchuck trade Is it the Kachchuck trade with Hubo
that is such a good mustache See Lanny do you see that 1999 Stanley Cup winner
89 89
10 years before you guys
I was against I was there
Oh yeah
Yeah They beat We beat We won We beat them in ‘ 86 knew he was on that team And then in ‘ 89 they came into Montreal and beat us in the form
Lanny scored the winning goal
I remember that iconic goal Here we go ladies and gentlemen The final pick of the first round the longest
It’s going to be just under four and a half
Longest first round in history
of the NHL draft We have an Arizona State Sunundevil
Sunundevil pick the newest members I don’t know if it’s this year of the NCHC I don’t know if that’s this year or next year I forget
There we go So we have to talk for a minute or two because John is feverishly working to show you the final
first round graphic which we will get to in just a minute Dallas Star Kid Sean any thoughts on Cullen Potter before we wrap this thing up are leaving it
uh love his love his skating Love the way he kind of pushes defenseman back on on their heels Not a had a little bit of a learning curve as a as an 18 I think he was 17 for most of the season at Arizona State as a freshman So a little bit of a learning curve there but this is right where you’d want to kind of add this type of player kid who’s going to attack with speed um could probably a little bit projects a little bit more as a as a as a second or third line winger but maybe could move up with move up higher in from time to time So nice little value pick from Calgary here So that’s a good one
And Luds he’s from Hortonville Wisconsin
which is about 130 miles south of Eagle River not far from Green Bay
thanks to Google Maps Okay
go goose hunting
They’re going to have a tough They’re going to have a good year this year Check this out Here’s the final draft first round of 2025 from picks 1 through 32 It did not take 5 hours
All these things now
Oh So there’s Matthew Shaver starting the night just past 6:00 p.m Central time Cullen Potter the last pick at just before 10:30 Central time How you guys feeling after that
tired
Yeah
Let’s microphone is nowhere near as I mean
It was fun I just it it just I just wish it didn’t drag on that as long It was It was three two and a half hours too long
Yeah for sure Like if that was if that was three hours If that was three hours
it would have been fun if that was three hours
Um it was fun listening to Leds Tell Stories though And Cam was the man Hikes coming on here just
being straight up Robert coming on the worst time That’s good times man That’s good times How did you enjoy it
i enjoyed hanging out with you It was definitely two hours too long Yeah that’s what most people say
Two and a half I’m okay with
Yep No it
be nice if the stars had a pick but hey

Sam world’s smallest violin
You need to push Jim tomorrow on to like hey we know Jim we know 26 of the GMs voted for this this year I don’t care what you do Jim You are the three-time GM of the year You need to pull your sway so everyone flips back to vote to make this in person
Agreed
Sean I would bet that Jim probably didn’t like this because isn’t that one of his fores is
he’s a people person talking to everybody and knowing what’s going on on the draft floor
Yes I mean I know I know at least one GM that is going to be really hard to sway the other way And he’s the guy I’m going to have to get on a Zoom call with in two minutes here from
Oh delightful Make sure everybody knows we’re covering round four too Rounds two Two through seven tomorrow
I thought we didn’t have to do
