hey Michael congratulations welcome to the San Jose Sharks organization i’ve been watching all the interviews you’ve been doing lately and it just kind of felt like instinctually you you might have had an idea this was going to go San Jose’s way for you did you feel that way did you have that instinct
yeah I mean I knew they were they were pretty high on me i had great conversations with them at um the combine and whatnot but you know they’re a great organization so I’m happy to be here
how familiar are you with this franchise did you start watching any games last year when you were starting to put things together and figuring out where you might end up personally do you have any idea of what this organization is all about where they’re at and and maybe even where they’re going
yeah no I I know they’re they’re obviously in a little bit of that rebuild uh situation they got a lot of great young players coming in um already already a lot of good young players there but um yeah just being able to try to join that and help them in any way I can is going to be huge
hey watching you walk up to the stage a few minutes ago what was that moment like i mean you you you knew this was gonna happen you knew you’d be picked rather high but it also kind of felt like facially you just you were trying to soak it in and a lot of things probably going on
yeah I I was really excited first off but like yeah my heart was just pounding with you know joy i was like almost blacked out for for a second there it just like didn’t feel real but um yeah it’s pretty cool talking about who this franchise already has and players like Will and Mlin and Ekkund um you know there’s a lot of fun happening here too even though the wins haven’t come yet I want to know if you’re going to fit yourself in with the fun of this group how do you see that happening what What type of fun guy are you
yeah no I I like to you know have some fun with the guys i mean um they are a bit of a younger team which which is better for my case but I’m sure I’m sure I’m going to fit in they all seem like really great guys so
hey in getting ready for today in this process how much did your brother already going through that help you did he share anything with you or just you maybe watching him go through that did it Did it help you make today easier
yeah just you know always have a smile on your face no matter like what happens i think that was the biggest thing for me um just enjoy the moment it only really happens once so um that that’s kind of the way I tick about it you know of all the things we look at and stats from last year and your career in total maybe being named the captain of Sageno in 2025 here does that also speak to maybe an accomplishment of you and and how your teammates viewed you and a little bit of a leadership that you can also bring despite obviously being a young player when you eventually get to the NHL that you also have that in your in your biography yeah I mean it was it was awesome to get the captaincy in Sageno i think for me though coming to like the NHL it’s it’s more of you know an older league so I think for me it’s just more you know learning and uh just watching with my own eyes rather than you know trying to trying to be a leader right away just listen listen is the biggest thing for me so that’s what I’m going to do
what do you know about California uh great weather um I know that’s that’s that’s about it i haven’t been there that often but um yeah
bring your flip-flops out here i also understand you’re you’re big into golf which that’s pretty common but billiards right am I getting that right you’re a billiards guy no I not not so not pool okay good just checking
oh pool pool yeah
pool we are speaking the same language okay
yeah I I have a pool table in my house so like me and my brother will play a lot of pool um yeah it gets pretty competitive sometimes
you and I almost just got lost in translation right there
yeah that’s my fault
no no no it’s all good um just two more things um you know coming to San Jose the fans here are super excited to not only watch you perform but also to get to know you how do you start to just describe yourself off the ice personality what to expect in terms of yourself
yeah no I think I’m just a genuine person i think I’m I’m well respected um I have a humor side too i can be pretty funny at times but you know just for just for the fans I I want them to know yeah I’m going to I like to treat everyone the way I want to be treated so that’s that’s how I that’s how I go about it
hey as you make this jump here last question as you make this big jump eventually to next season and you know eventually playing for the San Jose Sharks what are you working on in your game right now you’re highly touted everybody’s been marveling at you and saying “Oh he’s one of the top guys to go in this draft.” How are you still critical about yourself and where do you think you want to get better from last season to next
um I think in terms of my game everything like I want I want to get better at everything i think like a couple things in specific just defensively reliable um you know just helping out helping out in the diesel i think my offensive game’s pretty I speak highly of it but just defensively just try and try and become that 200 foot player
well the stats were pretty amazing from last year the personality i’m already digging that i really appreciate this time michael congratulations drafted moments ago the newest shark and uh I know this is a big deal for you so please try and enjoy it and can’t wait to see you out here for dev camp next week
