it and deserves to take a beating Um now he’s on the Michael Parson’s not worth 40 Let me tell you something None of them are worth 40 if you don’t win enough games It’s a Dak Prescott logic and it applies to all of them win games and nobody’s ever going to complain about anybody’s salary My theory as it relates and the Cowboys have $32 million under the cap Now my theory as it relates to any Cowboy big spending this year actually it’s twofold One I was there when I saw him do it So it’s in him That’s one Two I do think you if you’re Steven especially you’re like “Let’s sit on what we got Let’s see what we got.” And then let’s make moves after that And I wonder if the move they make after that comes only if we get to the trade deadline and they’re a contender and I’m still sitting on you know $30 million worth of cap room It is worth a uh one more note their first thing that they’re going to do with this cap room and justifiably so Tyler Smith not not only Michael Parsons who’s gonna actually give them 10 million more a cap room when they do that Tyler Smith Brandon Aubrey Don Bland George Pickkins but what about the next what about an ad what about more Chris V They pay their own and they do and they and they habitually and uh not only almost without exception but almost without flaw do a good job of paying their own and keeping their own That’s why the that’s why the Joneses are cheap accusation doesn’t work They they aren’t cheap with their own guys I’ve seen them go out and do it So I’m not shutting down even the most minuscule hope that we get to I think the trade deadline might be November 4th They moved it back a couple years ago that we get to towards the middle of the season and they’re going Chris King 78 too scared to go in and I I think then they go let’s let’s do it We got a whatever the record would be Whatever Whatever the record would be at that time We’re six and two or whatever it is We’re seven and two Let’s go Hey do you think they’ll keep Big Biscuit No not after this year I do not Enrique what about getting another quarterback That might not that won’t work in free agency obviously when we get to into the season That can still work this summer But my one concept is I hold out a little bit of hope that if they come to the realization that they are a guy away that they go get that guy wouldn’t be in free agency in this case but it might be a matter of spending VB pay their own is hogwash I’m not talking about LA I’m not talking about last year with the 12 guys I’m talking about the last 30 years VB They have a 30-year track record of paying their own By the way when we say pay their own we don’t mean pay every Schlam I’m talking about paying their own stars They pay their stars here They don’t pay Rico D Quiet Could we really be a guy away at the deadline Why not Again I don’t have it in front of me When the trade deadline and how the trade deadline and the schedule coordinate you don’t think you it’s been about beating the league’s butt It’s been about Jerry Wildcaten It’s been about big checks and big risks about home runs I’ve seen him do it VB you’re not wrong about the dollar store but I’m not wrong about what we’ve seen them do over the course of history and therefore it’s still in there somewhere At least that’s my hope They didn’t just participate in free agency in the ’90s They helped invent it Now are they willing to flex that brain muscle again Jerry turns 83 in October right on time Right before the trade deadline Come on Jerry Sugar daddy we’re still fishing as an Uncle You’ve got a lot of those Matthew PF just be proactive and not reactionary It It’s getting to be a little late for that for more proactivity So but but your point’s good But I would be settling for reactivity Cowboys get off to a good start Trade deadline’s coming Boom there’s a quarterback available Boom There’s a left tackle available But it’s going to cost you Again you pick a spot It doesn’t matter what position Cornerback left tackle right tackle running back I don’t care what it is You look around your roster and you go “We’re We have a chance We have a chance to win playoff games Let’s go buy something.” Yes Uh Steve somebody that’s having an estate sale which will happen at the deadline Jerry went wild caten is what we used to call it You’ve seen him you’ve seen me interview him on this show when he says “Uh Mr Mike I still got wild cat in me.” They used to take risks They used to roll dice They used to spend outside the building big the results of not doing so in the last 12 and 15 years under Steven’s guidance cap balance They don’t have near the void year future debt money what like the Eagles do Eagles have like $455 million that they’re going to have to deal with down the line and they don’t care The Cowboys have cap balance They have near contention and they have no majestic playoff run in any way reminiscent of what once was when in the 90s Jerry’s qualif uh Cowboys we forget about we think about the three Super Bowls four straight NFC championship games Could you imagine how good was it Oh man And could it ever be that again So let’s look back Here’s heads to ever walk through that locker room Kevin Goen and Mike Fischer are the other two Leonard Davis comes here in 2007 starts all 16 games makes the Pro Bowl second team allpro they go three and 13 Then he makes two more Pro Bowls Leonard Davis way underrated in Cowboys lore the number five all-time Cowboys outside the building free agent Number four and a controversial one We can wrestle with this for a minute Terrell Owens is an incredible was an incredible player and I don’t throw around incredible very loosely just a wildly talented player and he likes to talk about himself as if he’s in the class with about anybody and and as a player he was DC Mike we need Wildcat and Jerry to get us over the If we get to the trade deadline and you’re close to the top boy are we going to push it around here Did not have a good relationship with Bill Parcels Did not have a good relationship with people in the locker room to some degree But the production thousand yard thousand yard thousand yard double digit touchdown every year He was a machine of production to wasn’t all positive Gosh there she was drama Remember the suicide attempt controversy drama press conference 18 hun going on out there Old paycheck Jay Novichek Um now that was plan B free agency So that was like they don’t have that anymore That wasn’t like free agency free agency That was like we really don’t want this guy on our team anymore We’ll put him in plan B luck And the Cardinals had no idea what they had in Jay Paycheck So the Cowboys sign him to plan B free agency He makes five Pro Bowls He wins three Super Bowls He’s Troy Aman’s security blanket Uh he’s so much so much good First of all here’s what you don’t know about Jay I’m going to give you a couple things I already told you the story about the Jay Novichek show that was on uh that I hosted on 570 Cliff right I think we did it every Friday or whatever it was where we just talked about hunting and fishing and ranching and his payment was a John Deere tractor That’s what he wanted for his pay to do the show And we really did I I let him let him talk about going fishing It was fun It was funny Uh Novach did not like to do interviews to be frank with you Novichek did not like to do interviews with anybody except me and Richie Now you can call that a humble brag if you want to but it’s just true He put a Dixie cup up on his shelf in his locker with a sign saying I think it was I can’t remember if it was 25 cents must have been 25 cents for an interview or 25 cents per sentence or something And he had to put a quarter in it No it was supposed to be a joke but really what it’s supposed to be is just to discourage people from coming up to him He didn’t make me pay Uh Brian C I’m going to bring that up That’s a good one too So Susie Williams who’s a lovely woman I think at that time she might have worked for Channel 8 So she went and she’s very sweet woman and very good at her job So she went and put a quarter in the cup And so she got to ask Jay one question Then he said “Yeah you know it’s going to be a good game.” That’s all he said So I’m standing there laughing not at Susie I’m standing there laughing at Jay So she put another quarter in the cup and she asked another question She said “Yeah you know Redskins are Redskins defense is really tough you know we’re going to have a tough time of it but we we like our chances We like our game plan Good thing there was commas in that quote because that was all one sentence And then one more quarter one more cup one more quote and Susie went away and shared her story The the one of the great Novach experiences for me was we broke the story of the hiring of Barry Switzer in the Fort Worth Star Telegram Switzer to replace Jimmy And the next day we had the hot seat and Jay Novichek came in the hot seat And of course we got Michael Irvin throwing trash cans and we got you know I mean guys by that time I mean for every obvious reason people were Jimmy believers obviously and Noek and he’s the only guy in the building that’s the only guy in the locker room that was willing to say this and I loved it and I wrote the heck out of it and it’s worth noting uh Nok wanted to be recruited as an option quarterback to Oklahoma He he grew up in Nebraska right Wanted to go I think wanted to go Oklahoma W wanted to be on the farm wanted to be on the ranch and and he was a a brilliant high school athlete br And Switzer told him “You’re not good enough.” So he went to Wyoming with a quarterback for a minute Eventually they had him catching passes and then I think he tried out for the Olympic javelin team or something So he was an athlete that Novachek but I said “Okay so Jay come on in I know you knew Switzer from way back when you were a kid You admire him but he didn’t take you on his football team You must have something to say about him while Michael Irvin’s over here throwing trash cans.” And Novichek said “Whether I like him or don’t like him has nothing to do with it I I don’t care who the coach is I just do my job the way I do my job then And now we could all use a little bit more of Jay Novichek Howard C fish you brag Never CBS “Let’s put a camera right on his sweaty butt.” Look how funny that is six Pro Bowls three Super Bowl rings and of course very much a part of Emtt Smith Uh to get in condition part of the deal was there was a mile track in the backyard of Valley Ranch And I I I can’t illustrate this for you physically I’m trying to figure out how to do it So he would run his mile as best he could athlete that he was and his feet never he just dragged his feet His feet never even came up He just he wasn’t really running I mean his arms were running and his feet were just dragging I’m guessing he ran the mile that that that I watched one time I’m going to guess it took him you know I don’t know 15 minutes shuffle his feet going like this moving his feet like this around the track But in the end Nate Newton second greatest outside the building free agent of all time And again part of the trick here is you notice we’re not doing undrafted We’re not doing the Bill Bates Drew Pearson We’re talking about here’s a veteran guy out there whether he’s whether he’s big money or little money these five guys It was smart money Deion Sanders number one And again a controversial figure before during and after Disruptive in the locker room Yeah I mean nobody ever says it anymore but he was He was that that that uh Switzer John Blake Aman racism thing racist thing ra whatever that was Dion but Cowboys people still don’t It’s it’s still uh very much a lightning rod sports subject Dion do you believe him You like him Do you dislike him Does he seem like kind of a con What about that sing songy baloney What about the fact that he goes places and they win um five years four Pro Bowls 14 interceptions and then and that’s what that’s with people not throwing over there John Mack $5 pitch in in
