Utah Mammoth NHL Entry Draft Preview: A Chance To Shape The Team’s Future
it’s our 2025 NHL entry draft preview on today’s Locked on Mammoth [Music] you are a Locked On Mammoth your daily podcast on the Utah Mammoth part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day hello everyone and thanks for joining us as the Utah Mammoth are set to alter the future of the franchise with their number four pick today and we’re going to talk about it on Locked on Mammoth i’m veteran NHL voice Tom Callahan joined by longtime team analyst Robin Leono we thank you so much for making us your first listen each and every single day when it comes to the Utah Mammoth Hockey Club and uh Robin we had a a great live show uh Thursday evening folks are probably catching this on Friday at least I hope you are before round one of the draft uh has taken place but uh we’re going to get into who will Utah select we’re going to give our opinions on it we’re going to look at needs wants uh what could be happening and Utah’s been already moving and shaking this week picking up JJ Purka in a trade so many avenues that they could explore heading into round one tonight it really is cool and then I and I talked about it on the live show Tom i do think it’s so nice that we get to do a show like this especially knowing that Utah didn’t have to give up a their fourth overall pick for the in in that JJ Patray because now we still get to talk about the fourth overall pick because there’s so much that can go into this i mean there’s so much that go into this draft as a whole i mean it’s a very much different kind of draft than any of us will be used to it’s decentralized and it’s not as deep as everyone else but there’s still a good talent pool out there of players you can reach uh that you can select especially number four today’s episode brought to you by Game Time download the Game Time app create an account and use our code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase robin I’m actually going to be a little bit of a contrarian on this and I think this draft is going to be deeper than most people are giving it credit for uh especially you know it’s kind of funny to hear the narrative oh the draft starts at four with Utah the draft starts at five with Nashville um everybody thinks everything’s a foregone conclusion and it was funny the other day Bill Armstrong jumped on one of the members of the local media who said “Oh well the top three are a given.” And and immediately Bill’s like “Really they are who is it what do you know?” And you know as we talked about it’s not a given we think we know everybody thinks
Yeah everyone thinks
but
it’s crazy
there’s going to be so many options at number four and in his media availability on Thursday yesterday as you’re watching this on Friday uh he said “You know what we’re we’re not done heading into the draft we’re going to look to acquire more players.” And of course it’s if it makes sense but not only is number four in play to move up or move down but other picks other players matias Machelli is still on the roster and he’s a guy that we think may be on the move uh so that’s another name I want to bring up so Robin heading into this draft night experience still nothing is written in stone right up until Utah decides to call a name at number four
right i I And again I think even beyond that too right because as you said there still is more picks to be made just more uh more draft capital that Utah has they can use to your advantage to kind of moves move some players in and out remember last year I’ve said it so many times but I’m going to say it again remember last year all the acquisitions that Utah got were in day two bringing bringing in Mikuel Serachev and John Marino happened in day two of the draft um and specifically to kind of point to and you talked about someone like Matias Machelli take a look at we remember what the trade was for uh for Mauchev and it wasn’t even that much even you know picks being involved but it was primarily you take you know taking a look at the players being involved on that one in Utah trading away Connor Geeki and and JJ Moer people weren’t at some people at time weren’t a huge fan of it because they like oh you’re giving away you know uh some younger future for a you know for a for a SA defenseman like what does that say a lot of people there there was some there was some criticism at the time al but also some hype at the time maybe we’ll see something similar um but at a lesser extent we’ll see what happens with a trade that could involve a Matias Machelli
i mean as much as it’s lived by the sword die by the sword but Sergeev I absolutely would do that trade over a million times oh yeah 100%
that would absolutely take that trade and all the other moves that were made to shore up the defense uh giving a contract to Dylan Gunther I’m sure eventually giving a contract to Culie giving one to Purkco which is great getting him in the fold for five years um you know it just it really feels pretty good right now for Utah because the vibe is high around this team
and I think there’s a lot of buzz around this team and yes I did that on purpose um because you know Utah beehive anyway um I I think all of that is pulling us towards this inevitable conclusion Robin that Utah even though they were out of the playoffs last year they kind of are in the catbird seat almost in the entire Western Conference because they have draft capital they have prospect capital they have uh salary cap capital really do have a lot of things going for for them that can empower them as a team to continue to make these moves to become a real player in the Western Conference and it’s so cool too that I mean Utah has a lot more flexibility um this this phrasing has been used primarily when it comes to Utah chasing after free agency but I’ve also can apply it to what goes on during draft week whether it is via trades or going through other drafts uh or making draft selections or anything like that tom is talking about how Ryan Smith is willing to actually open the pocketbook and be like “Hey I’m willing to spend more money i’m willing to do what it takes to bring in a winning a winning team to uh to Utah.” Um and then and again I I I will say I do love that Bill Bel Armstrong when it does come to the free agency part we’ll get to that a little bit later too i’ll kind of reiterate on that but saying that it’s not not like they’re going to go ahead and sign a guy for $15 million uh but there but there still is the ava a a availability to be more open and look at those kinds of players and seeing what you can add focus on the future of this team without having to really sell a whole lot because they do have that much of excess capital that they really can use to their advantage it’s a really nice spot to be in if you’re Bill Armstrong
so the major question for everybody is who will Utah select and we’re going to look at that we’re going to look at needs and best players available uh and we’re going to go over here what we know for sure that is out there news and informationwise from all the other teams around uh really the top 10 in the NHL entry draft so we’re going to talk about that next and we’re going to get into it uh a little bit more here on our 2025 NHL entry draft preview on Locked on Mammoth and today’s show is brought to you in part by Game Time have you ever decided at the last minute to head to a ball game with friends and family maybe it’s game day already and you suddenly realize you just want to be in the stands and that’s exactly where game time comes in it’s the easiest way to grab lastminute tickets without the stress when the money wi with the money you save on tickets you can splurge on food drinks merch or even invite a bigger group to come with you game time makes it possible game time makes buying tickets fast and simple prices on the app actually drop as you get closer to first pitch and they’ve got incredible lastminute deals got clear seat views a low price guarantee that takes the worry out of buying game time is the official ticketing partner of Locked on MLB which makes it easy to browse the app for an exciting upcoming Major League Baseball game you know I’m a Jays fan anytime the Jays come anywhere near me I’m going to try to go see Toronto check them out because well it’s not the easiest thing for me to get up and check them out uh at Rogers place now sky it’s always sky open to me i’m one of those people but I’m always looking for hey what’s going on are they coming to a major city is it a place I can make a trip to fairly easily i always want to know plus they have last minute ticket deals coming up and zone deals for big savings like 10% off exclusive zone deals check this out for FIFA Club World Cup matchups those are going on right now too and of course you can always check those seat views out before you buy which I personally absolutely love take the guesswork out of buying tickets with Game Time download the Game Time app create an account and use our code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again create an account and redeem the code l NHL for $20 off download the Game Time app today last minute tickets lowest price guaranteed all right Tom Callahan Robin Leano here with you locked on Mammoth subscribe if you haven’t already it is absolutely free doesn’t cost you a penny to get all this awesome hockey coverage it’s our NHL draft preview right now who will Utah select robin let’s start with what we know for sure or at least we think we know because
the winds of change are always a blowing around the NHL draft but number one at number one the Islanders have said they’re not really interested in moving off the number one pick now that is their publicly stated stance they don’t want to leave number one i know the teams are checking in with Chicago at number three we know the teams are checking in with the Mammoth at number four we also know the Predators at number five also have a ton of first round picks they could be very active the Buffalo Sabres at number nine have said that pick is available they have put that I’m pretty sure the whole organization is available um so it really makes it interesting to know that the even though the Islanders say we’re not coming off number one um so maybe that’s concrete maybe they know who they’re picking they’ve got their selection they’re going for it
but I feel like there could be a lot like from three on down everybody says “Oh it’s set in stone it’s set in stone.” I don’t know that it is no it’s not and I think that kind of goes back to the point where you know where you know Billong was like “Oh is it tell me because I I I’ I’d like to know.” And it’s interesting that you brought that up because I feel like I mean there is at at the very least a decent amount of time who goes in number one right and I feel like it’s it’s a majority consensus i mean there is still maybe a couple of stragglers a couple of different you know outliers who think might be differently but it seems to be that Matthew Schaefer is the very likely pick for the first overall uh in in this year’s draft but even then after that there still is a question mark i mean I saw like a a brief report that that that even though I mean Michael Misa is on the top of the list who knows the Sharks could even decide that just to pull a wild card out of their hat and be like you know what we like Anton Fondo and then now and then that and then all of a sudden everything else goes kind of haywire oh now who is Chicago we’re going to pick who is Utah going to pick everything from two on really is a tossup at that point
because what what then happens just to kind of explain the process if Chicago had its heart set on Fondell and he’s gone maybe now Chicago picks the phone back up and says oh you know I don’t know Dallas you wanted number three well let’s talk about what it would take because our guy’s gone and we’ll move back but we want somebody off your roster you know Edmonton you’re in a cap squeeze right Now let’s talk um which would be wild if they traded that far up but uh that’s that’s kind of the point is that
especially if like I said if Rondell goes number two somebody is going to call Chicago to try to trade up because that somebody is going to want to draft Michael Misa because I do I really firmly believe Michael Misa is a top three pick um but again it’s not set in stone i mean there is even though it’s not likely but there still is a small chance in there that Michael Misa can fall number four and if he does I mean I I would go insane and because that’s an opport that’s could be an that could be like a golden opportunity for Utah but I’m not saying that’s going to happen i don’t think it’s going to happen but you have to prepare for everything
you really do i mean and other names keep swirling obviously and Martone and Hagens and Fondell and all these guys that are out there DOY it could go in any direction so who’s Utah going to select we’re going to give you our thoughts later on in the show but looking at need versus best player available bill Armstrong always says I’m going to pick the best player available which I’m a fan of i think that you should always go best player available because as he as he explained it ever so nicely to the media just in case we didn’t know this he goes “Well the best part about the NHL is that you could trade players.” He’s like “So I can pick somebody who doesn’t fill an immediate need yeah maybe we want a center but we end up with our best player available as a defenseman or a winger or whatever.” It’s like you could trade that guy you don’t have to keep him you know and it just kind of it made me chuckle um the way he he kind of explains things sometimes i I think it’s I hope he’s doing it to be funny in a way um but it just it’s very true because you want the best possible player the best possible asset and Robin you know what if you draft a defenseman and Utah’s loaded with defenseman but three years down the line that defenseman is the best defenseman in the organization you’re going to find a place for him
i do think there’s a good point about that Tom i mean I think getting a plus player available to me makes the most sense because if you look a few years down the road what we’re talking about this player isn’t going to be available they’re probably not going to play in the NHL on this NHL roster for two three maybe four years it’s hard to anticipate what those needs are going to be because that’s because again we’re talking about that far in advance yeah sure you’d like to have a 1C but maybe you already do at that point betting best player available as it at least just loads up that depth that you’re going to have in the future maybe you might not need that player down the road but at least you do have it at least you’re stockpiling them maybe you can use it as you kind of mentioned as a little bit of a trade asset maybe it’s like okay we don’t need this player someone else really wants this player we can use that value is high because someone really wants them and that’s where the debate comes in about best available player because there is the quote unquote Bill Armstrong mold versus the way this team appears to be shaping up that’s that’s that’s the huge question right like I mean there are what like five six players who are on the big board for Utah at number four like I said we’re going to talk about what our prediction is going to be in a little bit but it’s it’s a little bit of a mix right you have a best player available guy uh who’s might be an undersized center we’re going to get to get a little bit more details on later but I’m being very generic at this point you have a best player available guy or potentially I should say who is undersized but they’re have a potential being a top six forward on the other side you’ve got another player a couple of other players out there who are centers or wingers who are like six foot three six foot five over 200 pounds pe uh players who fit that mold he’s like “Oo that is a Bill Armstrong type player that is a player who can play physical.” And then there are others who don’t even necessarily have all that skill out there but is a very intriguing pick that definitely also fits that Bill Armstrong mold that people have talked about um but don’t traditionally go up to within that top four on most big boards if you’re talking an NHL leaguewide thing but if you’re if you’re looking on just how Utah looks at a player alone might be a little bit higher up this is the most interesting thing about all of this is at the end of the day this was a comment that Bill Armstrong passed and and he said “Look if you’re because he was asked Bill do you make the call on the pick or do you let the scout do it who makes that pick?” And his answer was “If you’re the person who’s been doing the leg work you’ve been doing the you know investing the time to get to know and to learn all these players.” He puts the trust in his scouts to make the pick so Bill Armstrong does not override the scouts the scouts determine what direction they’re going to go and they have to come up with a consensus as to who they’re going to select i mean any fan any longtime fans of this franchise that go back to the Arizona days um know that hey we I mean we’ve had Craig Morgan on this show once or twice um and anyone who’s followed Craig Morgan for a number of times he’s talked about what goes into a pick and and he’s not talking to Bill Armstrong about it i mean yeah sure Bill Armstrong has a huge amount of input but who he’s talking to about it is the director of scouting Daryl Pandowski because he’s the one that’s listening to all of his scouts people underneath him he’s the one that’s really making the pick he’s the one that says “This guy is going to be good for our future.” And that’s I mean it’s a lot of pressure but it’s pretty cool when you get it right
it really is good and I mean he’s been doing a phenomenal job for the last couple of years right i mean yes we’ve like I have been saying Bill Armstrong when it comes to some top picks like like Dylan Gunther and Logan Kulie and yeah sure like I said Bill Armstrong is the one who phones it in but it is his team as a whole that does it and is the team has been doing a phenomenal job for years now
yeah they really have they’ve been doing a great job scouting and identifying and developing those players into NHL level players so all right Robin and I are going to take one more break here when we come back we’re going to tell you who we would select uh and take a look at the you know final scouting rankings as to what you can expect here uh if Utah still has that number four pick on Friday night and today’s episode is brought to you by Monarch Money ever wish m managing your money felt easier with Monarch Money it can whether you’re growing your savings or planning a big purchase Monarch puts you in the driver’s seat it’s like having your per own personal CFO giving you full visibility and control over your finances monarch Money is more than a budgeting app it’s a complete financial command center you can track all of your accounts investments and spending in one place so in addition to managing money you’re also building wealth one of the things that was surprising that I noticed when I started using Monarch Money is I was able to track my spending so I was able to see oh I was spending this much on delivery i was spending this much on all my subscriptions and I’m like oh my god it was insane it allowed me to tighten things up to kind of see how things were all across the board not just my bank accounts but see where my investments are going see where my 401k is going that way I don’t have to go through app to app to app all figuring out hey where where I where am I at financially it all goes out in one spot really makes it so much easier take control of your finances with Monarch Money use the code locked on NHL at monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year that’s monarchmoney.com code locked on NHL for half off your first year tom Kahan Robin Leano back here with you on Locked on Mammoth please subscribe if you haven’t already and tell your friends about the podcast we appreciate you being a part of things here taking a look at the 2025 NHL entry draft preview robin we talked about looking at needs versus best available and the reasons why you might do either one but here’s the crazy thing nobody’s draft rankings agree beyond one and two no no prognosticators no scouts no anybody we’ve talked to or read or any Nobody agrees on
and again even again even now at this point there’s still a slight question and again not a huge one because there’s only maybe one or two ports doing it but a slight question even at number two um
which is crazy yeah i mean but it seems most of consensus is like Schaefer Misa one and two and again again the new question put it on number two but it’s now there’s okay who does Chicago get at three do they pick Anton Fondell do they get James Higgins do they get Caleb Deoier or they get you know Porto Martone because those are also players who have been also talked about at number three in addition to the number four spot number five spot number six spot um it’s it is a wide openen race of what happens from uh in this draft and again to me it is really beyond that one pick to me Schaer is going at number one it’s what happens beyond that who knows i mean Bob McKenzie’s got Porter Marone at number three and Fondell at four and then you look over Emily Kaplan has James Hagens at three and then Porter Martone at four and Roger McQueen at five who is the ultimate riskreward player in this draft and then Caleb Day is five of Mackenzie and like all the and so plus you know you talked to Will Scouch too and folks by the way if you want to go check out that episode Robin had a great interview with Will uh this past Wednesday uh that’ll be another good draft primer for you but Robin even even Will uh looks at things differently as well he does and and it’s interesting too because I I mean I I this is the perspective that I put him this is the kind of position I put him in is I told him “All right you are Bill Armstrong who are you picking at number four?” And he had two answers right his two answers were if I’m Bill Armstrong and if I get my own pick based off of what I know I would be picking James Hagens at number four overall however if I’m thinking like Bill Armstrong there’s the key word right here thinking like Bill Armstrong knowing the kinds of players that Bill Armstrong takes and where he looks at all the other aspects and the way the different ways that another GM looks at this it’s like it’s like oh I’m going to go ahead and look at um at this player i’m blanking already on I’m already I’m kind of blanking in my head at the top of my head um but it was uh Brady Martin there you go i was thinking in my head who is it i’m thinking Brady Martin and Brady Marin is someone that we haven’t talked about a whole lot about a whole lot about right because he wasn’t on like the top five list a lot of people he was in the top five of some but it’s really a question mark because I mean a lot of people just don’t look at his upside as much because different aspects because again as you talked about every scout doesn’t agree
yep and I mean Martin you’re looking at a guy who more than a point a game but plays hard plays physical um you know and again middle six forward and that’s the thing is Robin if you if you hit a guy ends up in the middle six but if you hit big top line
you know and that’s the thing at number four I think a lot of fans well this player better be on our top line and better be there for 20 years it doesn’t always quite work out that way um but that’s what you’re shooting for that really is what you’re shooting for and I think that goes into a lot of the other conversations and we’re going to get to your our actual predictions in a little bit Tom but there was a discussion a little bit ago I think about a little over you know well over a month ago and you even brought the question about the time of a player like Roger McQueen and I mean you said hey that’s a true high-risisk high award and why is that because his floor could be he might not play because of injury because of injuries because of all these other aspects so he might not make it but his his his ceiling is like “Oh he can he could be pretty darn good on each right?” And I mean the word I’ve heard tossed around with him is unicorn huge like 6’5 66 center but skates like a little guy uh nimble crazy hands amazing goal scoring ability like if if you stay healthy that’s like a once in a in a franchise player but if because it’s a back injury and if that goes sideways on you he may never play in the NHL so that’s really hard that’s a hard thing to pick it would be the most savorish thing ever if they picked him at nine and he’d never um
No but you’re right i mean and again it goes through the what the high-risisk highware situation is and and that’s why what a lot of general managers do is they won’t look necessarily at the ceiling the ceiling is great right if you can find us a player where their ceiling is like top six forward great right that’s fantastic like even a 1C or you know like just a you know one one wing either side of the wing you know if you’re a first liner you you amazing pick right that’s a great ceiling to have however what they what a lot of these general managers and directors of scouting and all those people what they look what they really look at a lot of them I mean ideally and and how what I tend to look at Tom is what their floor is because to me it is what can we like can this player make it into team especially at a first like ceilings to me matter more let’s say second third fourth round because like okay they have potential they can make it but they might not we kind of we we we we knew that I’d like to see if they do but not but if you’re in the first round especially at a fourth overall pick their their their floor need need to be at the very least an NHL roster kind of player
I agree I absolutely Totally agree with that so all right Robin it’s time for us to make our picks at number four pressure’s on pressure’s on you are the scout who has the phone in your hand you’re making this pick for the Utah Mammoth with the number four pick in the 2025 NHL entry draft Robin Leono and the Utah Mammoth select I am gonna go ahead and say they’re selecting James Hagens just incredible talent uh if he is available and I feel like would make it would would fit pretty darn perfectly in a few years i I cannot argue with picking a center who already is drawing comparisons to Clayton Keller uh because Keller seems to be pretty good
uh he’s doing he’s doing okay for himself
he’s doing okay yeah I I I like it uh I am going to veer off though i’m gonna pick
Okay
porter Martone from the Bmpton Steelheads you can’t teach size he’s 6’3 just plays with a little bit of an edge you know a little bit of a mean streak i like that he’s big he’s physical he can score um just he’s competitive you know
fits the ball pretty well he really does
you know everybody’s talking about Brad Marshian right or they talk about Tom Wilson or they talk about all these guys that get under your skin and are that guy he can be that guy
and you know what you may not need to go out and trade to add that piece when you’re ready to contend for a cup in three four years he may already be with your franchise and I think that’s Porter Merto
oh absolutely what I will say Tom and again I think you and I again you and I have our different picks of what I what what we think could happen or whatever it might be but I will say this whether it be James Higgins or Porter Moraton Caleb Dorier even Brady Martin I’ll be happy because I I the terms we’ve been using is let like one is let Bill cook but the other is just in Bill we trust right it’s you put your trust in Bill Armstrong because thus far he hasn’t really made any decisions that any that has severely disappointed me there were a couple that made me scratch my head and I’m like billing but I’ve never I so far have not been disappointed i think he and he understands what these moves are for the future so just say yeah and Bill retrust let Bill cook whatever you want to say absolutely absolutely so let us know in the comments who you think the Mammoth are going to pick with that number four overall pick if they hang on to it of course which we will all find out on Friday night for round one robin where can they reach out to us
yeah they can reach out to us just about everywhere on social media primarily active on Twitter or X whatever you want to call it @lockedonmouth locked mammoth you can find us just about everywhere else at the same i’m personally mo also primarily active on Twitter atroin with a y_le o

Let's Go MAMMOTH!! Good Morning!
Draft night. Let's go Mammoth 🦣
Give me Desnoyers!!!!!
I agree with Trent at Clean Hits. We better not take a winger at #4. It better be a center.
With the idea Schaefer and Misa are gone, and probably Frondell, I'd go with Hagens. Having said that, I thInk Utah take Caleb Desnoyers. I'd be happy with any of the following: Misa, Frondell, Desnoyers, Hagens or O'Brien.
God damnit guys I’m disappointed in today’s effort do better!!!
I think R.Smith is wanting the Utah Mammoth to hit the playoffs this coming year.he was wearing a Mammoth hockey team hoodie during the NBA draft early this week.
Let's go!! Can't wait to see our #4 pick!!
Enjoy the draft tonight. Thank you both for all your hard work! My prediction for #4 is……Caleb Desnoyers.
