2025 NHL Draft Trade Rumours – Habs, Isles, Utah, Pens, Bruins, CBJ, Preds, Flyers, Sens, Canucks
the 2025 NHL draft is almost upon us later on this evening We’re going to kick things off with the first round of the 25 draft and we’re going to finally learn who’s going to go first overall and we’ll see where a lot of these top prospects will end up In today’s video we’re going to recap all the latest rumors around what might happen tonight at the draft So we’re going to go over all the latest rumors around which teams may select which prospects which players might be traded which draft picks could be traded and what all might actually make things entertaining tonight We’ll discuss all the latest rumors coming up next So welcome back to another video here at TopShelf Hockey As I mentioned this is going to be our final installment of the uh 25 NHL draft rumors Of course we’ve been doing this about once a week or so for the last uh four or five 6 weeks as we’ve now as we’re getting closer to lots of speculation about what’s going to happen Well the event is almost here We’re about to find out for ourselves And this for like I said for the last time here’s the latest rumblings around the league from all kinds of different sources all the NHL insiders I’ve done all the research kind of gotten all the updates from all the insiders all the reporters out there kind of condensed it into one video So of course uh one thing that we can say is not really a rumor I think it’s pretty safe to say is going to be a fact is the New York Islanders are going to select Matthew Schaefer first overall I will be utterly shocked if they go in a different direction and that does not happen Uh we’ve also heard that that pick is very unlikely to move I know Matthew Dar a new GM of the Islanders has made it pretty clear he doesn’t really have any intentions of trading that pick But to be honest all the latest rumblings indicate that things could get very interesting now at number two I mean for the longest time it’s been I think by most people consensus that as far as ranking the prospects not necessarily who the teams are going to pick but just looking at the draft rankings that Michael Misa was considered the number two prospect in this draft And it’s probably going to turn out at least it looks that way that that could be the case But there’s a lot of rumblings that the San Jose Sharks with a number two pick might not take Misa and they might take Anton Fondell Now Fondell’s a really good player as well But many of the top scouting people seem to think that there is a there’s a gap between Schaefer and Misa but then there’s another gap between Misa and some of the other top prospects including Fondell I think most people think Fondell’s definitely like a top five Um I just don’t know that there’s a general consensus that he is the second best player in the draft based on what we’ve seen in his young career so far But there is a lot of rumblings that the Sharks really like him and he could be the second overall pick So that could cause some other players to slide And of course we know all these players all these teams kind of have their preferences here And if that happens uh if that rumor comes true and Fondell goes to the Sharks I think it could set off a number of other things that could happen For one it could make Michael Misa available to Chicago at three which I don’t think they’re really expecting right now There is a lot of rumors that the Blackhawks could be open to trading that number three overall pick There was some belief that they may have had that pick in trade conversations on the table for JJ Purka when that never materialized Um you know Purka ended up going to Utah in what looks like an underwhelming return right now We’ll see how things work out for the Sabres but the Chicago Blackhawks are rumored to be open to considering a trade with that pick but I think it really boils down to how things go Now if Misa goes to the Sharks I sounds like Misa is a player the Blackhawks really like Uh then I think at that point the Blackhawks at three I’m not sure they go for Rondell I think they might likely go with DA There’s been a lot of speculation that they really like Caleb Day for the among the Wildcats Uh so we’ll have to see what they ended up doing here Uh obviously Utah at four is a big wild card too Uh there’s belief that that Utah really likes Brady Martin Some people don’t think Brady Martin is a top four prospect and as much as they like him that if they really really want him that they should try to move back a little bit to get him Uh lots of speculation about Utah in a variety of aspects though Um there’s a lot of rumors going on in the last I’d say probably 12 hours 24 hours about Utah um not being done after making that PURA trade A couple of other things that we know Utah is looking for uh a right shot defenseman preferably somebody who can play top pair minutes and they want to upgrade their goalending Now based on our knowledge there could be some right-hand defenseman that might be available in the trade market where they might make some degree of sense for them to consider moving this pick But there’s also some belief that Panthers defenseman Aaron Axplat is likely to hit free agency And if he does that Utah might be one of the top destinations for him So they might be able to get their right-hand defenseman without making a trade That leaves them to maybe hitting the trademark for a goalie I don’t know if they’re going to move the fourth overall pick for a goalender So they very well could end up making the selection So we’ll see what happens Uh Utah I think is going to be a busy team We know they want to make a splash They’ve already started to do so by getting Purka And they’re going to be a very very very interesting team to watch here So like I said a lot of these selections and a lot of these picks that are rumored to be available for trade are going to largely be dependent on which players are available on the draft board Uh because it really boils down to who you like who you don’t who you’re willing to move back for to maybe get a lower pick and all that kind of stuff right so you have to factor in all this stuff Now we know the New York Islanders are very much expected to want to make a big splash here Not only did they win the lottery and are expected to take Schaefer first overall and get a franchise altering defenseman but we know that they also really like Long Island native James Haggins who at one point was in the conversation for first overall his stock has kind of slid a little bit Some people think that with some of the higher risers kind of passing him in many draft rankings So you’re looking at Fondell you’re looking at Day you’re looking at Martin all these guys that have been good prospects all year but have kind of really risen up lately that Haggins might slip down to that 678 range It’s possible And that that might be the type of pick at the at the very lowest four So somewhere between four and eight that that the Islanders are going to try to get one of those picks in order to land uh Haggins and have Schaefer and Haggins Now we know with the Islanders Noah Dobson’s name is very much out there As we talked about there’s a lot of talk that uh there’s uh you know big a big trade rumor with Noah Dobson We’ve heard about the Montreal Canadians being heavily involved And I think to some degree we can put Utah in that conversation too Uh said they they do want a right-hand defenseman They might get it through for agency but you know maybe they make a trade with uh with the Islanders They get Dobson Islanders get another high pick they get Haggins I mean that is a possibility that I could see playing out There’s a lot of things kind of I think being discussed and kind of you know balls in the air here so to speak that might play out in different different ways Um Frank Valley one of the top insiders around hockey seems to think that uh he he’s giving it a 75% chance that at least one if not multiple top 10 picks are traded Um like I said like I I don’t think pick one or two is going to move Uh three like I said there’s some speculation Chicago is open to it but I I think it would take so much that it’s probably unlikely Four is where it’s going to get interesting with Utah You get Nashville who I think considering where they’re at they probably make the pick unless they see an opportunity to maybe move back If there’s a player they really like they think they can get a little bit lower and maybe get more assets They already have three first round picks I’m not sure you know but they really you can’t have too many of them This you know they they really need the prospects So we’ll see what happens there Uh then you’ve got like Philly Boston like that’s kind of where some of the other picks get interesting here too So um I mean Philly is another team that I wouldn’t be completely shocked when it comes to the Islanders that they could be in on Dobson So maybe there’s a pick that that lands out as well I don’t think the Bruins would be in on Dobson So if they made a trade there was some talk although the Islanders and Bruins were having some conversations I think it was more about players like Romanov and Pacio Um but um I’m not sure that’s going to get you the number seven overall pick They’d probably have to have something else in there I’m not sure what it could be or we don’t even know for sure was around that pick but it was believed that the Islanders like I said they’ve been poking around at different teams trying to figure out if they can get another pick So all that like we know um the Bruins apparently really love Brady Martin as well and if he’s not getting past seven is what a lot of people have said So we’ll have to see on that Um a lot of people really like his compete level Kind of compare him a little bit to Sam Bennett and what Bennett’s done in the playoffs and won Stanley Cups the past couple years A lot of teams are it’s a copycat league They want their version of Bennett to see if he can help do the same thing Um so Florida will be an interesting team to watch Speaking of Bennett uh we could see some players of theirs moved Of course we know they don’t have much in the way of draft picks cuz they’ve moved a lot to be uh you know in win now mode which is obviously worked out well for them Uh they they’re still losing a first round pick this year the Matthew Kachchuck trade So Kachchuck’s got two Stanley Cups and the Flames are finally getting to make a selection uh from that trade Um but a couple of players that the Panthers might have available and this would be I suspect four draft pick considerations uh or prospects cuz they wouldn’t they need to clear space if they’re going to have a shot at keeping some of their UFAs I mean they can probably keep Bennett and Marian if there’s any chance APlad stays or if they want to make any other upgrades they’re going to need room and players like Evan Rodriguez and Mackie Samoscavich they’re not guys that are making a ton of money but it would give them enough flexibility that uh there could be some interest there I know Samuscich has had a player that a lot of teams have inquired on I wouldn’t be shocked if Florida keeps him I think his role could increase with the team as some as they do have to make other cost cutting moves here between this year and next year So we’ll see But the the Panthers might be a team to maybe try to get some more uh picks mid round if they need to shed some money Columbus will be a very interesting team to watch We know they’ve got multiple picks here as well Uh there’s belief that Don Wedell would like to uh to try to get some immediate help Uh he was quite open uh during media availability that he’s definitely open to trading um pretty much all of their first rounders Like there’s there’s none that’s off limits Uh he said it’s been tough though cuz there’s not a lot of true defined teams that are really sellers There’s like the Penguins and then everybody else is looking to upgrade which means you’re kind of more inclined to make a hockey trade and not everybody wants to do that So as much as there’s all kinds of speculation about stuff it is a challenging market to work through So we’ll see But I do expect Columbus to be busy Uh Montreal of course like I said uh they got two first rounders Uh obviously backtoback pick 1617 We know they’re looking for a number two center Uh of course we’ve heard all the rumblings about Noah Dobson Uh the belief around Dobson that Montreal’s offer was going to be at least one if not both of those picks along with a prospect like Logan Mayu Um so we’ll see I mean I know there’s some think maybe it’s Ryan Bcker Some people are are claiming that the deal is going to happen and that it’s a matter of working on an extension with Dobson Some think Dobson prefers Montreal I I’m not completely sold on all of that That’s what’s out there and being said We will see It makes sense to me that they would at least be in the mix for him but I don’t know Uh Vancouver’s very open to trading pick 15 Uh they didn’t even really have the GM and the president didn’t even show up to the draft combine Um so I think we kind of known for a while that they have every intention of moving this pick for immediate help Uh the Conucks need a variety of things If they can get a center or a scoring winger I think that would obviously like be the preference here It sounds like there’s a better chance they’re moving than Demco or sorry signing Demco There was a lot of talk about him being traded Um and I it’s still possible but it seems like they’ve made good progress on an extension So it seems more likely he’ll stay which would then make the number three goalie Arur Sheils who just won a Calder Cup with Abbottzford more likely available as his stock will have grown from his performance there and certainly a goalie who’s going to be looking for more opportunity and if Demco does extend for multiple years and Lankin and signed for multiple years then that’s going to kind of close off his path to the NHL So he likely could be a player that gets moved so watch for him Um so that that’s one Vancouver player that’s definitely out there Um but we know that that pick 15 is open They’re likely losing Brock Basser to free agency Um they could be losing PS Sudter as well although there’s been some talks there They are apparently extending Connor Garland Sounds like he’s going to stay and signing a new contract So uh we’ll see But that 15th pick is definitely open Uh Steve Stos of the Ottawa Senators made it known in his media availability today that he doesn’t see the team moving up from pick number 21 Um but uh he did seem like he was quite open to moving back if he saw an opportunity to kind of maximize that pick and move back an extra asset or something That sounded like something he would do They have a number of players that they’ve kind of identified that they’d like to get with that pick And if depending on how things are going ahead of them and what’s available um you if a team wants to jump up and take that pick and they move back a little bit and gain something for it that’s something that they are open to do I don’t see the Senators trading the pick outright Um their prospect pool is not as deep as it used to be cuz a lot of their good young players have graduated to the NHL Uh they are pretty young uh NHL team Um and they do have a few good prospects in the system but not not like it used to be right cuz like I said it’s just where the stage of everything is at So restocking would be something they’d like to do here So I expect they will make a selection Just a matter of move back or not Uh Pittsburgh will be another very interesting team to watch Multiple first rounders now after the Rangers surrender that pick to them to give up um to to complete the JT Miller trade Um so they have back-to-back picks 11 and 12 Uh so they have their pick and the Ranger pick There was a lot of speculation that Kyle Dubis and the Penguins were likely to try to move up and if packaging those picks together to get a higher one into that top 10 if they’re able to is something that they want to look at So we’ll see We know the Sabres are they they got their hands on a variety of things I wonder how different their team could look come the fall that number nine overall selection is reportedly very much available if they can get a good young player for immediate help Um so I I kind of would be a little surprised with where the Sabres are at if they don’t trade it to be honest but we’ll see Nashville’s a team with three first rounders like Philly I suspect that one of those two teams are likely going to be the first team to take a goalender It’s expected that the uh the young goal of Joshua Ravensburgen is probably going to be the first goalender taken It could be somewhere in that 20 to 30 range Uh I do wonder as well about Jack Ivanovic Uh he could go late first round He might go until the second round It’s hard to say but uh if if there’s going to be goalies taken I think that they’re the two most likely And those that in my opinion are the two most likely teams doesn’t mean another team won’t but when you have multiple first rounders like they do with three if they don’t trade the picks or combine them to move up or do something different with it then like I you know you could see a scenario where they might get a forward a D and a goalie or something to give you a good mix in their prospect pool So uh yeah those are the teams to watch when it comes to that Calgary too uh they’ve got two picks Uh they don’t have their own but they have picked 18 and 31 that they’ve acquired through trade Uh so we know Craig Conroy is going to want to add to his prospect pool They’ve also got Rasmus Anderson out there So certainly um it’s likely he’s going to be traded If not now then sometime during the season Um but I mean it wouldn’t be shocking if they got you know a decent pick as part of a package in return for Anderson Uh and then say picks 1831 maybe they can make a splash here and get up higher That wouldn’t be completely shocking in that sense So you know overall you got LA too at 24 Ken Holland’s made it clear he’s uh willing to move for immediate help Uh that the Kings are definitely going to be a team that is going to be interesting to watch Uh for sure Anaheim at number 10 We know the Ducks are being aggressive to try to get into the playoffs next year And again um they might make the selection but I can see them moving that pick if there’s a really good young player that they can add to their roster too I can see that being an option too Uh now said a lot of these picks are available Doesn’t mean a lot of them are going to get moved because there’s only so many good young talented players that could end up being traded And you know obviously these teams are all there’s a lot of them that are open to it and have made that clear or we’ve heard it through the grape vine but it doesn’t mean that everything is going to come to be right So you got to keep that in mind and remember that besides those teams some players to watch cuz that are likely if not Friday then Saturday uh or going into free agency are likely to be traded but some of these players very well could be traded that involve getting draft picks for this draft So I would say Rangers young defenseman Kandre Miller So you definitely want to watch him Isaac Howard of Tampa We know he’s not going to Tampa He won’t sign He could stay in school become a free agent It’s expected Tampa’s going to trade him It makes a lot of sense to me that they would get you know either a late firstrounder or maybe multiple other draft picks for his rights So watch for that Marco Rossi out of Minnesota is another name to watch Uh we know the the Wild are looking to add down the middle um and maybe get a different type of centerman So it’s not completely I think possible it’s not impossible I should say that he returns to Minnesota with a new contract but he’s definitely out there being considered for trade for sure Uh Sam Gerard in Colorado is another name to watch as well And I know that his um the Avalanche are even in on Byum to maybe consider bringing him back Um so there is that possibility there Um and I know like between Gerard and Manson it’s possible one of those guys goes out of Colorado and maybe they swap with Buffalo in in a defenseman tree I don’t not sure if that’s something that could happen but I wouldn’t rule that out completely Um a couple of the guys in Buffalo they get Byum and even Ukapukin in I think he’s he’s out there to some degree I’m not 100% sure he gets moved but I can see it happening John Gibson another goalie in Anaheim to watch Eric Carlson in Pittsburgh Uh belief that the Penguins will eat a bunch more money to knock that value down on his AAV to make it more likely So we’ll see what happens there Victor Arverson out of Edmonton’s expected to get moved with multiple teams being in the mix Uh Nick Hag out of Vegas watch for that one Pretty good chance he generate a uh draft pick type of return If Vegas is in on Mitch Barner which they’re expected to be we could see them also make other cost cutting moves Right now the latest intel suggests it might not be guys like William Carlson and Tomas Hurdle It could be a player like a Nikolai Wah or an Ivan Barbashev So certainly between those two and Hag wouldn’t be shocking to see Vegas try to clear some money to make a big move in free agency Of course we know Jordan Kyu’s name is out there I think the Blues are kind of just feeling out the market to see where things are at He may not get traded but he does have a no trade kicking in after July 1 So why not explore the market and determine if it’s best to hang on to him for right now his uh his name has been out there in conversations but obviously yet to get too too too serious just yet here Andrew Cop out of Detroit’s been rumored to be possibly being dangled by Steve Eiserman with 50% retained That’s been a signing that hasn’t worked out for Detroit at all Um so I know they’re they’re dangling him to try to see what they can get back or like said trade and maybe he could be more valuable to a team at a lower cap hit So maybe a little bit more challenging to do but we’ll see Like I mentioned Sheilops in Vancouver is another goalie to watch especially if Demco signs If there’s any snags reported in the Demco contract and it’s not happening then Demco himself could be on the move I do wonder a little bit about Douggee Hamilton out of New Jersey I would have thought before and I still think it’s more likely that we see Hamilton depart New Jersey maybe in a year or two when it’s more likely that they’re going to try to get Quinn Hughes in New Jersey Um but you know there’s teams out there that are going to tempt them to consider it and I I think depending on what Utah does if they don’t make a deal with the Islanders for Dobson or they don’t land Ecklad or they don’t think they can get Ecklad in free agency this is also another option for them I think one of those guys is going to end up there Um so we’ll see about Hamilton The Kraken are obviously been making some moves I expect them to continue with that Some players like Jared McCann and Jaden Schwarz are both believed to have um their names are out there for sure The Kraken are 100% considering making moves around players like that Lucas Riel of Chicago another guy to watch I wonder about Ebon Um obviously bringing in maybe the young German who could maybe learn from uh you know fellow German Leon dry settle The Oilers are going to need some younger cheaper wingers I I wonder if they might give him an opportunity uh in that case I think Chicago might be interested in um letting him go to another team and see if a fresh start benefits him So we’ll see Lots of players could be moved here Lots of picks could be moved It’s obviously not all going to happen This is just a speculation about what teams are willing to do So keep that in mind This is all and as Elliot Friedman said every year around the draft everybody lies So a lot of the intel you hear some of it’s going to be like “Oh that makes a lot of sense.” Some of it’s going to be like “Oh that doesn’t make sense.” It’s not all going to happen It’s just things that things are teams are thinking about and discussing behind the scenes Doesn’t mean it all comes together Uh it could be a very chaotic first round with tons of trades Um which would be fun but at the same time it could be that just because there’s lots of teams willing to do business if they don’t find the deals they like it could be a quieter evening and maybe we only see a little bit It’s hard to really say how things are going to play out but there is belief that between now and middle of July that there is going to be a lot of um a lot of movement here And ahead of the draft too there was a lot of speculation that we might get an announcement on a new CBA which would kick in in 2026 a 4-year extension to have complete labor piece until at least 2030 which will be phenomenal news Uh so there’s quite a possibility we’re going to hear from Gary Bman ahead of the draft Friday night Anyway so let me know your thoughts on all the draft rumors what you think is going to happen where some of these prospects are going to go and we’ll talk further in the comments section I’ll be back after the draft to do a video instead of a mock draft We’re going to do a recap and look at where all the players went and kind of recap where everything went There will be videos throughout the night if there are trades happening during the first round as well So stay tuned here We’ll get all your draft coverage and all your other news and rumors from around the entire NHL Thanks for watching I’ll catch you next time [Music]

You never learned the difference between singular and plural?
Top Shelf Hockey you see the reports there is said to CBA news the reports it will be for 4 more years of the CBA and after next season the Cap will also count now in the playoffs starting in 26 -27 it sounds like it and the return of the 84 game schedule to then from reports i heard . its said that the new CBA will be said at sometime at the Draft or before the Draft can't wait to hear all the news
Could there be a Noah Dobson and Pierre Engvall for Matias Maccelli and the Utah 4th overall trade make sense?
The Florida panthers made two dents in the cup
Let me know your thoughts on all the speculation around the draft
Thank you for your insights!
Frondell really is the premier power forward type that teams are trying to acquire. He made his bones as a seventeen year old battling men for the puck and has arguably the best shot in draft. Not to mention outplaying established NHL stars at that age in the Swedish 2nd league. Really isn't much of a stretch for the Sharks.
Preds… do SOMETHING. Please at least draft Hagens or a C at 5, don't do some Barry Trotz stupid trade or draft some off the board dman
Didn’t Utah just trade a right shot defenseman, with one of the hardest shots in the league????
The Canucks management and Aquilini are dreaming of two playoff games at home. That's it, and that is the problem with this loser organization.
And if they don't get rid of the useless 11.6 mil per season contract before July 1st, the loser organization is doomed for another 7 years.
If Utah wants a Dman they should call Calgary
Rasmus Anderssen seems like he would be a perfect fit in Florida
Has gritty game and can run the PP
The two players on the Bruins to watch are Zacha and Korpisalo. there reports that there were teams that had some interest in Zacha around the deadline. the wild card could be Geekie. do the bruins have a number in term and AVV that they will not go over? Korpisalo made it perfectly clear he is not happy the way things went last year. especially the way Swayman struggled much of the year.
Buffalo is in full tank mode, hope we get first pick next year.
Time stamps?
I don’t understand why Staios is so concerned with the prospect pool. When the Sens trade all their current core players in 5-10 years, they gain a load of picks/prospects from those trades.
Mesa Jar-Jar Binks! Mesa your humble servant.
Can you tell me something new?
I'm not going to listen to the safe crap as yesterday.
Yes, you can not have too many 1st round picks!!
What are you thinking?
We have a #2 center.
His name is Kirby and this will be his big adventure!
Obviously more centers are helpful for depth.
Something you want
