2025 NHL Draft Media Availability – Malcolm Spence (43rd Overall, New York Rangers)

was the wait kind of long or how were you how did you feel about that
yeah I think um in a lot of emotions the past couple days and um now that I have a jersey on and um in an organization like New York I’m I’m pretty happy so um the little Malcolm is is pretty ecstatic right now and um I’m just really excited to get going
what’s your relationship with Sha
is he your roommate sha lived with me for um for a little while um and he’s one of my closest buddies for sure and um I know people talk about him about about a player and how he is on the ice but he’s just even better person off the ice and um yesterday to hear his name called i was I was really happy uh he’s one of my closest friends and you want to have your your buddies succeed but um a little awkward now with the Rangers and Islanders so
that was the next question have you put that together yet yeah I honestly second you kind of said it I was thinking about it as a little rivalry now but um like I know with Sha is um we want to be competitive so it’s going to bring the best out of each other and um I’m really excited for both of our careers
and you played with Carrie as well right
yeah Carrie was my linemate for two years yeah um and I know he just got traded and um that was my first thought when um I put the jersey on was I maybe get to play with Terry again which is pretty cool so um definitely give him a call after this so to go from Eerie with Schaefer Carrie to now New York rivalry team what is that that’s kind of what is that like for you
it’s I think it’s just a cool feeling um not a lot of people get uh the chances that we get to have and um be here today and I’m just really really ecstatic that I’m going to have that opportunity so
you know that Matthew was talking a little bit trash about the Rangers yesterday
it doesn’t shock me doesn’t shock me he’s he’s a he’s a character so um I’ll definitely give it back to him for sure
did you expect this this time in the draft did you think maybe you would be able to do yesterday
yeah obviously I think going into yesterday I thought um my name was going to be called and um obviously after it was a lot of emotion and um for me it was just I wanted to go somewhere that wanted me the most so um I know New York uh really wanted me i know I had a really good interview with them at the combine and um I’m just really excited to kind of go to New York City my sister’s from there and um she went to school there so uh it’s really cool for our family

okay and what’s your development path like well I’m going to go to Michigan um and I’m going to going to try to make some noise there I think um for me obviously I’m I’m going in there with a little chip on my shoulder and um I’m going to go in there and try to prove a lot of people wrong so um for me it’s going to take it day by day and kind of see how the year goes and then go from there why do you think you got those people wrong i think there were some expectations that were set um for myself and um obviously um went a little later than I thought I was going to go and um for me that’s just going to be uh more motivation and I’m really happy i know uh the I’m the Rangers first pick and um to me that shows that they really believe in me um to kind of go to an organiz organization like them and play in front of that fan base in that city is um some something cool so um I’m I’m just really excited
you’ve been to New York Madison Square Garden
yeah I’ve been to Madison Square Garden i haven’t been um for a game um actually we were in New York for my sister’s graduation so we got to tour around there but um really excited to go there and uh be in the big NY like what you going to Dark for
uh just for just for touring cuz um after my sister’s graduation we kind of just went around the city and um walked around and um it’s it’s a pretty cool spot doesn’t get better than that

why Michigan now like cuz you could have done it a couple years ago but
you didn’t and now now you’re allowed to again so why new decision with the uh with the rule change um I think it just allowed me to have more time and um I know for for my game I’ve still got some stuff I want to work on and um Michigan’s kind of given me a a longer runway path and um it’s the best uh it’s the best school in NCAA hockey they have the most NA NHLers so um for me if you want to be the best you got to work with the best on a daily basis so um really excited to get going there anyone else there
you know anyone else there or going there yeah um Michael Hagg’s one of my longtime good friends growing up with him and obviously Horse had a great day yesterday and um McKenna and and Aiden Park and um Kakamovic and Henry Muse who I’ll be living with um so u definitely a lot of a lot of guys going and um I think we’re going to have a really good team so I’m super excited beginning of this season I told myself you’d be here what would that conversation like for you
i think I’d be pretty happy um it doesn’t it doesn’t get better than being for um being in the Rangers it’s New York City and um you’re you’re in front of the bright lights and uh for me I thrive in playing in atmospheres like that so um I’m really excited
