it finally happened if there is something that you think you can’t do I am here to tell you keep going keep trying keep at it because anything is possible the Anaheim Ducks have traded John Gibson now this is not me saying that because like John Gibson’s bad or anything it’s me saying that because John Gibson has been traded every year for the last I think 10 no one has been in trade rumors more than this guy over the past I don’t even know how many years without getting traded and this is the summer of that my goodness chris Krider who’s been in trade rumors forever finally got dealt trevor Ziggress who has been in rumors from the moment he entered the league has been finally dealt and now John Gibson after all these years is a Detroit Redwing the trade is John Gibson going to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Peter Morazzic so it’s a goalie trade a second and a fourth specifically from Greg Washinsky a 2027 second round pick so it doesn’t affect the draft today and a 2026 fourth what the Ducks get is a bit of a wild card peter Morazzic is incredible peter Morazzic is awful peter Morazzic is everything in between two seasons ago Peter Morazzic had a 908 in 56 games with the miserable sad sack Chicago Blackhawks then he took a huge tumble with an 890 save percentage in 33 games with the miserable sad sack Chicago Blackhawks he played five games in a return to Detroit with a 902 save percentage i wouldn’t read too much into that it’s a fivegame sample size the guy was unplayable in Toronto after signing a contract that he got because he was unbelievable in Carolina if you know what to expect out of Peter Morazzic you’re the only one but he is going to be the undisputed backup behind Lucas Dostall one of the hottest young upand cominging goalies in the NHL and they’re countrymen both guys are Czech they might even both be on the Czech Olympic team so why now how did this Gibson trade become possible well this past season he was pretty good after years and years of perceived steady decline and a huge contract Gibson is in the seventh year of an eight-year contract paying him $6.4 $4 million per this was signed before COVID and had the cap continued to go up maybe it wouldn’t have looked so bad oh were there some years where it just looked awful the guy is 31 about to turn 32 in July which blows my mind it feels like he’s 40 he’s been in the league forever and then I remember at the World Cup of Hockey in 2016 he was on team North America which is made up exclusively of players 23 or younger what let’s arbitrarily start in the 1516 season would you pay 6.4 4 for a 920 goalie okay how about 924 okay how about 926 okay how about 917 okay 9004 oh 9003 oh 94 oh 8.99 oh 8.88 oh 912 oh the 8.88 and 46 games that he posted two seasons ago is awful on a team that to be fair was awful gibson has been really difficult to evaluate because it’s been said by hockey guys for years no no this is a good goalie it’s just the team he plays for is really really bad and then Lucas Dostall showed up and started stopping pucks and we’re all like might just be you last year he was stupendous in 29 games he had a record of 1111 and two which isn’t the greatest but again the Ducks and a 912 save percentage which these days in the NHL that’s really solid peter Morazzic by the way in year two of two so he’s got just this season coming up at $4.25 million there’s no salary retained so this saves the Ducks 2.15 million in cap space this team already has a staggering amount of cap space this doesn’t even look real according to Buckedia for the upcoming season they have 38 just shy of $ 38.2 million in cap space all right let’s look at their free agents brock McInn Robbie Fabry they they have some RFAS who they’re going to have to pay isaac Lundestrom Brett Leon Mason McTavish is going to be a big one drew Helison Oliver Schillington is a free agent oh there’s the big one lucas Dostall he doesn’t have a contract right now if you want to really split hairs technically Peter Morazzic is the only Ducks goalie under contract right now so yes there’s no salary retained yes the Detroit Red Wings take on the more expensive goalie but because they’re getting rid of Morazzic really they’re only spending about $2.1 million more on goalending on let’s be honest a better goalender detroit has needed a number one and what they keep doing is signing all these 1Bs and hoping they turn into like a 1A and it just hasn’t been working here’s what I will say detroit better have a real solid backup behind Gibson because again he had a very good season last year he played 29 games that’s it now they do have one more year of Cam Talbot who was he was all right last year he was super good with LA the year before he was in the Allstar game he went to Detroit took a step back but he still played nearly 50 games and put up a 901 so is that the tandem then is it Gibson Talbot that’s okay put it this way it’s okay with the potential to be better than okay it’s okay with the potential to be really good but you’re banking on Gibson being great in his first season somewhere else and Cam Talbot uh continuing to be solid while nearly kicking 40’s door down will this be enough in an Atlantic division that appears to be just an arms race right now and as for the Ducks okay you have some players to sign but there’s no way you’re going to be able to spend all that money i don’t even think you’re going to be able to spend half that cap space what are you up to by the way for anyone who thinks I’m being hyperbolic half of the   3. Ducks fan here, the salary space isn't necessarily for this season. Next summer we have an insane amount of RFAs. Carlsson, Gauthier, LaCombe, Zellweger, Mintyukov and im probably forgetting someone

  12. The Ducks are wild right now. I love that the first thing they did after drafting Roger McQueen is send him to Disneyland to photograph him next to Lightning McQueen. He needs to wear number 95 and Roger "The Lightning" McQueen

  14. If the Red Wings were able to form another Grind Line to actually challenge opposing top lines, that would be best outcome for Detroit trying to rebuild what they once had.

    Gibson may or may not be a repeat of when Vernon came into Detroit.

    Without Detroit having some physicality and push back ability, it doesn't matter who's between the pipes, it's another bust season, before it even begins!

  15. Gibson is the best goalie detroit has had since jimmy howard was still good, you guys deserve this. I really thought Edmonton would've done this but yeah, im convinced theyre clueless in the realm of goaltending

  21. I met Gibby's Mother-In-Law on a flight a few months ago. She hated that he was so abused on the Ducks. We talked about how we both wanted him traded to a team that would appreciate him. I'm sure she must be so excited right now

  24. 38 million in cap space is nuts, but not the most. Rn the Sharks have an estimated 44 million in cap space and will need to spend about 20 million just to hit the cap floor

  26. They're saving cap space for McDavid if he doesn't re-sign, which I absolutely think will happen but in the 1% chance he doesn't the ducks will be beating down his door yelling "16 million!!!"
