and welcome into the ballpark Happy to have you with us Saturday baseball on the show It’s the Miami Marlins and the Arizona Diamondbacks And we’ll be back for the first pitch right after this About to get started here And on the mound here today Zack Gallon Chris what are you looking for from him
Yeah he’s definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip but he’s going to have to find a way to limit the base runners put his team in a position to win a ball game So we know he’s prepared We know this guy is a competitor and we’ll watch how he works in this one Shortened the bunt and missed it going along and ball one One of the things amazing with Zack think about the players he’s been traded with and for In December of 17 he and Sandy Alcantra were dealt to Miami from the Cardinals for Marcel Ozuna Then ultimately in July of 19 he went to Arizona for Jazz Chisum Hit on the ground to short on to first and the first out of the game is an easy one And time now for the Marlins lineup They do a lot of things well in this offense Singi They control the strike zone They make pitchers work hard for outs And as a result one of the better OBP teams in the league Well what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy Whether you go to instructional league whether you go to spring training you see these players even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter They’re practicing that type of approach Boo And when you have that filtering through the organization even when you call off a player they step right in and continue with the pattern that they have established at this level which ultimately leads to a lot of success
Got the bat going too soon and strike two You know you translate on base percentage It’s basically this teams that have a high on base percentage they don’t make outs at a very high rate As my buddy Joe Sheen says OBP is life Next one in the dirt One down base is empty Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another Got him looking and he did not like the call Well definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout
You know those are tough ones to let go as a hitter but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes Two outs space is empty Augustine Ramirez the next up for the Marlins And that one missing low One no strikes and misses inside Two outs Base is empty Missed with a change up And that’s ball three And there’s the automatic to third and that chance handled in plenty of time to first Marlins set down in order and the Marlins down quietly And now the Diamondbacks will get their first turn at bat No score You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show Back here in the desert and our starting pitcher here today Edward Cabrera Chris it’s a little more common these days but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy Well I hear you about the strikeouts A lot more guys striking out today But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out particularly when you need it a man on third less than two outs situations where yeah maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot I think it’s real critical And he’s got it now The Diamondbacks lineup as put together by Tory Lavell
and no doubt a big factor in this series so far Pave Smith he’s really been showing off the pop in this series so far two homers and you know he’d love to add on with another shot today I’m interested to see how they approach him
Here’s Catel Marte What a season it’s been for him He has supplied a lot of power and that average and a good fast ball to start him off at strike one Cabrera the 65 righty He features a change up a fourseamer a curve a sinker and he works in a slider He normally does damage on that pitch in that location just to swing in a miss there I don’t think he want to throw it again though Struck him out swinging Blew the express right by his bat for strike three Dominating strike out there on just three pitches And that’s what a good power pitcher can do to you If he’s hitting his spots filling up the strike zone sometimes he bats over before it really begins
Pave Smith in now Takes ball one off the plate The pitch This one smoked out to left Drops in for a hit Couldn’t run it down and he starts his afternoon off right with a double
Man those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever Such a good feeling This was a really nice swing didn’t quite get enough behind it to get it out of here but once it got over his head in left field it was extra bases all the way And now it’s Josh Naylor He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching The lefties however give him a little bit more trouble The strategy of winning a ball game when you can make that pitcher work a little more expose himself by throwing pitches that could be the key to winning perhaps later on So good job of extending this inning getting a knock with two outs to bring the number four hole hitter up

That ball exploded off his bat and off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence It sounded really good too He just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run And now here’s the Marlins DH Kyle Sters This one popped up middle of the infield One down That hanging breaking ball looks so juicy to the hitter And
nothing more frustrating when you miss that pitch and you pop out He’s going to have to think about that till his next at bat So up next Otto Lopez Ripped to short Throw to first in time And stepping in the rookie left fielder Ariberto Hernandez check swing and he went Strike one

One left for Miami Still behind by a count of one to nothing Back here at Chase Field And now it’s going to be Jake McCarthy right fieldielder Here’s a player known for playing better in day games which is not always the case I mean day games are different boo Things change from game times to your daily routine but he sure makes the transition look easy No waiting around right there He was ready to swing it on the first pitch Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way Didn’t get jumpy didn’t try to pull the ball He let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit And now they’ve got some speed on first So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion James McCann in now Check swing He went too far and it’s a strike

For me that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield The first baseman has to get inside create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first Really good job all the way around

O2 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat Swing and a miss Struck him out Nothing doing for Arizona but they hold a one- nothing lead And welcome back to the ballpark Out of the fourth and now Jesus Sanchez That one catches the corner You know these Marlins just haven’t produced as many competitive at bats as I’d like to see in this one They’re swinging early being aggressive but one or two pitches later the at bat is over That’s not going to cut it if it’s not resulting in hits So they might want to be a little more selective up there This one in the air Marte One up one down That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there Hitter looked like he was on it but I think that velocity at the end just beat him Instead of a line drive or something hit deep it’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense the other way and a base hit So a man aboard now with one away [Music] Dominant performance for him today Boo Just two hits allowed so far No runs across either And he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced So I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much

Here’s the pitch Runner goes stops it on a slide over to first It’s there And that’s a great play Now that is leftielder This is such a difficult play for third baseman Chris A sliding stop and worthy of another look The stack cast
Oh I’ll tell you man I’m frustrated if I’m the one hustling down the line the whole time thinking I’ve got a knock and going to beat the throw and then boom you hear the ball hit the mid and you’re out That’s just a great stop and great throw and it’s Lordis Goreiel Jr right down to shoot and it’s 0 and one Well he’s been incredibly efficient in this one First pitch strike percentage over 70% That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point And that one fouled off
Pitter’s got some good opposite field power What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit Hard hit left side throws to first in time Jake McCarthy digging in it’s the speedy outfielder Jake McCarthy This guy can absolutely fly I think one of the faster players in baseball and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter Generally second third time through the lineup you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it
Misses the zone and he gets him to chase
Two strikes Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two Well he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs you’ve got to
Ah that’s strike three And the third out so we take a break Well this guy competes hard We see the emotion there I love it Great job of getting out of the jam We go to the top of the fifth and now for the Marlins Ariberto Hernandez Gallon back to work and that misses
ball one You know these Marlins as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story We’ve seen it quite a bit today It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group Way out front for strike two
And on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again
That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was Next offering is downstairs That’s a little bit low
He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here I love it in the air to left center Griel has it sized up Hauls it in for the and there’s one down Now batting third base

Well these Diamondbacks being a little too patient at the plate in this game They found themselves behind in the count quite a bit They’re trying to be patient but it’s mostly resulting in outs not base runners And you could argue it’s making things more difficult at the plate

Well you can’t really adjust your game plan for that last pitch Guy hasn’t thrown it very much You got to focus on the stuff that he’s throwing up there most of the time Stays alive Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside Really think the outer half is open That one misses and it’s two and two
