Evaluating Day 1 of Waddell’s Reshaping and the Draft

The more I’ve sat with the Jackson Smith pick the more it has grown on me. I still wish they took Hensler at 20. There are a couple good RHD in the mid 2nd to mid 3rd range today maybe we can make a move for one of them.
Pretty much my thoughts exactly.
I like the Smith pick. I’m really not sold on picking a goalie in the 1st, especially not when trading down seemed like an option but his numbers seem really good.
Overpaying for Coyle (when we probably could’ve gotten a similar player in FA and signed to a longer term) and taking on the absolute liability of Miles Wood AND freeing up $7 million for Colorado was….not great. Just a really head-scratching move.
Not a fan of Waddells moves to start this off-season.
Couldn’t move either pick for a win now piece, both drafted players are 3-4 years away.
Gave up a metric fuck ton for Coyle and Wood. Added almost 8 million in cap between the 2. Still hasnt re-signed Fabbro or Provorov.
I like his take on the goalie pick. The value is never good to pick a goalie in the 1st round. Unless the prospect is someone like Carey Price or Askarov who will make the jump sooner and are ridiculously good.
Goalies have relatively low value in the trade market too. Blackwood was cheap and is a great goalie, Gibson was cheap. There’s just a lot of good goaltenders and not enough spots. Prospects like Comesso are also way cheaper than a 1st round pick. It’s almost always a mistake to take a goalie in the 1st. This isn’t anything new.
We could have had Carlo on a cheap contract with term and possibly made the playoffs instead of a goalie that won’t make it here or be impactful for 5-6 years, if he hits. It was “too expensive” during the trade deadline, congratulations Don you picked a goalie that’s a dice roll and have little to no options for RHD this upcoming season.
“No other goalie was drafted in the first round”… let me check my notes… ummm… I guess 30 is practically out of the first round.
I just can’t get excited about the moves. Love Jackson Smith, hate the goalie pick, and I hate the avalanche trade. Hasn’t resigned Fabbro and the goalie we were targeting went to Detroit.

How did we not get the Gibson trade done?
