well Boo may be a little pedestrian there in terms of the ERA but with those numbers you expect to be in a ball game and have an opportunity to win and really that’s all his teammates can ask for so we’ll see if he’s able to be consistent in this one
here’s the left fielder Brendan Donovan
donovan that’s in for a strike on the outside corner and this one is off and running that’s outside and it’s one and one swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt
man that was pretty gross right there foul ball left side he’ll see another
i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up not close with that one two and two
this guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat he just battles up there he doesn’t take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away

he’s really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fooled now up for St louis mason Win and a first pitch fast is in for a strike win goes 5 feet 11 in 185 lbs and he was a second round pick in 2020 swing and a line drive that’s a base hit into right field so a man aboard now with one away alec Burlson alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals first pitch doesn’t find the zone win stands at first with one out next offering is in for a strike kelly left that change up got away with one there and he’ll take it but doesn’t want to make that mistake again
runner on the go and he hits a ground ball right side throw on to Santana no chance at the double play with the runner in motion now we take a check of the St louis Cardinals lineup someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs garrett Hson well Boo there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does i mean batting over 400 with runners in scoring position are you kidding me i I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not out to center Thomas under it and that’ll do it the Cards leave one now the Guardians will get their shot still scoreless it’s Major League Baseball on the show back now at Progressive Field and now here’s the starter for St louis Riley O’Brien
well he’s been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone so we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one
bottom of the first so in now for Cleveland Steven Quan oh that got away from him
and he’s going to reach on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning
now it’s the right fielder Kyle Manardo and the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center hamson one down here’s the Guardians lineup now

yeah Booan that can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now and that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs so we’ll see if everybody can just relax bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of
runner on the move bounding ball here rolls foul ruer goes again base hit that was smoke through the infield throw into third and he’s out he’s out as a base runner right there you’re making the call yourself this ball is clearly in front of you and you’ve got to know for sure if you’re going to be able to make it safely to third that time he was wrong as a really nice throw came into third and now it’s the switch hitter Carlos Santana chopper right side and that’s foul that’s a laser base hit
and now first and second with two outs so important to get into the fielding position after you deliver that baseball that is a scary one watch your lips lane Thomas will make his way to the plate and that’s in there at the knees all ones the count that crosses the plate and now they’re just one strike away from getting out of this mess first and second two down that one just misses
man oh man i don’t know how you take that pitch that’s as close as it gets that one out to right
ball runner around third and he gets by him he will score and they take the lead now the second run is in cut off now a throw home and he’s out cut down and that ends the inning but two runs for him and they jump ahead second inning coming up from Progressive Field it’s the Guardians two and the Cardinals nothing back here in Cleveland top of the second and here is Nolan Aronado outside ball one well
after scoring runs this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats misses outside and that’s ball two just off the inside edge looks like he’s just sizing him up there really good pitch to hit but he took it all the way sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game that may be a pitch that he turns on swing and a miss struck him out and now one away typically that high fast ball if it’s close to the top of the strike zone a hitter if he’s prepared for it can get to it but that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to and that’s why you see the swing and miss thomas Sajay-Z stands in now and watches strike one one out base is empty fought off foul 0 and two now and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again and the pitch to the right side throw on to Santana two up two down in the top of the second two outs base is empty nolan Gorman the next to hit ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning and down in order go the Cardinals and they’re down two nothing here in Cleveland we head to the bottom of the second here’s the third baseman Daniel o’brien back to work in there at the knees come on Daniel sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit man aboard on the leadoff single everything came together for him couldn’t get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle timing was just perfect got great wood on it and there was just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it bo Naylor at the plate now good defender he’s been inconsistent offensively that’s in there that’s strike one schne on at first nobody out that missed by a lot and the count even one and one gary Simmons our played umpire today sort of has a reputation as a pitcher’s umpire
yeah a little bit of a wider zone than most I’d say and a wide zone can be tough to deal with as a hitter cuz you have to start expanding what you’re looking for covering both sides and with the stuff pitchers have today you’re just not going to have a lot of success [Music] in the dirt to second but way too late safe there into scored position on the wild pitch and there goes the double play possibility well that’s part of the risk when you throw a breaking ball in the dirt even as good as catchers are these days at blocking pitches that one just got away enough and that takes the double play opportunity away for now that’s down and in a slider missed that’s a really good take right there slider down and in very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with and ball four two aboard well he took his chance at getting him to chase right there but with first base open walk not a bad thing he set up a double play opportunity if he can induce a ground ball gabrielle Arius digs in for the Guardians on the ground right side and that’s just fouled no outs runners at first and second that one a little bit high and that’s ball one that to right squeezes it runner tags it second and he makes it up to third with one away anel Martinez getting ready to hit in there and it’s 0 and one
in this situation the batter’s got to know what the pitcher’s trying to do to him and that’s trying to get him to hit the ball on the ground get two for one you got to look for something up in the zone at worst case scenario you deliver the sacrifice fly fouled off he was late back to the mound might have him hung up here oh the throw is over his head everybody’s going to be safe so the Guardians lineup turns over steven Quan digs in for the Guardians he’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup base hit and a run in to score puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI first pitch fast ball in a great spot to do some damage and he squared it up nicely first and second one out kyle Manzardo digs in for the Guardians 0 for one with a fly out to center and that’s fouled off runners at first and second with one gone bottom half of inning number two next pitch is outside that one almost got him
two strike one out runners at first and second next pitch a slider that misses outside he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked two on one out and that’ll load the bases so here we go again with the walks it’s been a real struggle finding the zone for him in the past now even if they get out of this jam these walks add pressure and stress to the entire team ramirez in the box now no balls in a strike
tough situation right here so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there this one is blasted a no doubter grand slam jose Ramirez bops one out a four spot on the board it’s 8 nothing you know more than 100 grand slams are hit every season in baseball but they’re still exciting every single time [Music] well he comes through big time with the grand slam here but you also got to give some credit to the guys ahead of him good at bats to get on base and really set the table for a very special moment in this one manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound riley O’Brien done for the afternoon and the opener strategy clearly didn’t work out this time new arm coming on we’ll be back after a short break sunny Gray gets the call from the pen
i think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard just doesn’t have the same intensity to it but he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for the stats obviously regardless of the score one out base is empty carlos Santana digs in now pitch misses there one and0 in the air to left center donovan calls it in two away batt down base is empty here’s Lane Thomas swinging a drive deep right field that one back there and that gets down in the corner and into second easily with a two out double didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat put a very nice swing on that pitch right there got one to drive and just kept it fair down that right field line and into the corner and it’s almost impossible to track those down as an outfielder and up next for Cleveland Daniel Steman and the first pitch misses for ball one and a strike in there one and one
thomas on it second with two down that one’s in there now he’s in a one-two hole that’s towards center hamson moving under this one he makes the grab and that is the third out of the inning jose Ramirez with the homer here it’s now an eight nothing game major League Baseball is on the show and we’re back top half of the third inning stepping in Pedro Pahes just missed and that is in for a strike and the count even at one pop dump martinez makes the catch for the out and there’s one away h here’s Garrett Hson this is a guy you got to keep an eye on when he digs in definitely been known to drop a drag bunt from time to time and he’s pretty good at it Chris
yeah and he creates a sense of urgency for the defense because of the speed because of the ability to put down that bunt lifted in the air left field pretty well struck they got it for out number two
just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left now you see even sluggers from time to time try and use the bunt really as a way to beat the shift donovan in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike and a fast ball misses outside for a ball and now it’s even one and one there’s the swing and a miss one ball two strikes hacks and misses it’s a strikeout [Music] nothing doing there for St louis still 8 nothing set for the bottom of the third stepping up for the Guardians bone Nailer and first offering is fouled off you know these Guardians really impressed me with the quality of their bats in this one it’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work they jumped all over the starter and knocked him out of the game early he just was never able to settle in and the damage was done by the time he got the hook the one-1 is fouled off
i mean when you’re chasing the opposing starter in the first inning or two that’s just such a tone setter for the game and it puts the other team back on their heels and it instills a lot of confidence in your lineup from top to bottom line drive base hit right field so a runner aboard to start the inning now batting Gabrielle Arias digs in for the Guardians fly to right his first time that
pitch in for a strike one’s the count and that’s through there for a strike and that is downstairs and it’s one and two that’s the third off balance feed there’s one on to first double play oh man what a smooth double play that was a thing of beauty from start to finish anel Martinez will hit next goal for one he hit into a fieldielder’s choice his first time and that misses ball one [Music] left field donovan has this one sized up and makes the play and that’s out number three no runs one hit no errors and no one left on to inning number four guardians eight and the Cardinals nothing back now at Progressive Field John Shambi with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth Mason Win first pitch just misses one ball one strike down the inside corner for a strike swang in a line drive that’s a base hit into center field and they have their first hit since the first inning alex dominant performance for him today boo just two hits allowed so far no runs across either and he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced so I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much
and stepping in for the Cardinals Alec Burlson grounded out his first time off a little bit high and it’s one and0
well here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit and hardly order coming up right behind him this is where they need to get going win gets his lead at first nobody out right through there for a strike the kick and the pitch runner goes strike in there safe at second with a stolen base singi he definitely showed off the wheels there
yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed next pitch is downstairs
really good take especially with two strikes and they’ll do it again got him swinging good pitch right there i mean he’s attacking a location that this guy at the plate tends to have trouble with and there’s just so much information in this day and age sometimes too much information but the guys that can take that information process it and then go out there boo and execute the pitch go right after that hitter and get the result that they were anticipating that’s really good pitching right there and it’s a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together just missed check swing and he went at the count one and two
two strikes strike three and that’s two in a row well just excellent location on that inside fast ball really locked him up and as a hitter it’s not typically what you’re looking for you’re trying to protect away and then in so you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes it’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball but either way that’s a really nice pitch here’s Nolan Aronado is fouled off runner at second two down top half of inning number four and a liner out into right center for a base hit coming home he will score it’s an RBI single it’s 8-1 thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals 0 for one he ground it out in his first at bat and that one upstairs ball one hey Swing and a popup schne makes the play and that’s the third out one run a pair of hits no errors and one left on now to the bottom of the fourth guardians eight and the Cardinals won and welcome back to the ballpark now the left fielder Steven Quan the right-hander back to work cut on and lifted in the air burlson settles underneath it pulls it in for the out and a quick out number one now batting rightielder
Kyle Manarda digs in for the Guardians he’s 0 for one and the first pitch misses for ball one two balls no strikes that one drifts inside there’s the strike swinging a foul back that’s out of play that’s ball four tried another fast ball but missed the spot
oh you know this guy wants to swing it but he’s showing some good patience in this one it’s the second time he’s taken ball four
man at first with one gone here’s Jose Ramirez he’s already homerred here in this one and that’s downstairs and outside maybe losing command a little bit after the walk next pitch not even close next offering is fouled back that one finds the zone at a count one and two popped up foul territory behind the plate pah hauls it in and there’s two away up next for the Guardian first base and here’s the first baseman Carlos Santana he has singled and he has flyed to left santana 38 years old he joined the team as a free agent probably the best one we have seen throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate foul ball it stays nothing and two manardo leads off first with two down to the inning ball one low ripped to third but handled and that’ll end the inning guardians leave one and it remains an 8 to1 game back here in Cleveland ready now for the fifth inning here’s Nolan Gorman by back to work that misses ball one you know these Cardinals need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings they’re trying to find ways to drive the ball with some authority but it’s just not happening for him so far zero extra base hits in the game so it’s been tough for him to get anything going

sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through but it’s a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have guys in scoring position because they put themselves there swing and a ground ball out to Short throw on to Santana and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth now batting catcher Pedro Pah
pedro Pah now at the plate that pitch gets the corner strike one he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball
popped in the air left field makes a nice running catch that’s out number two
good pitch he just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay closed
two out space is empty garrett Hampson next up for the Cardinals fly to left his first time and that’s outside and that is ball one back to the mound he’s got it third out that ends the frame one two three go to Cardinals it’s still an 81 ball game here in Cleveland here comes Lane Thomas and that’s outside you know these Guardians putting together some really good at bats in this game there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so I’d say mission accomplished that catches the top part of the zone one ball one strike having himself a really nice game at the plate anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that’s great work right there
man at first nobody out and now here is Daniel Schne for two it’s interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well so when you’re looking at that position you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed but he does in for a strike going one
and I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed it makes the whole team that much better
and a foul ball what about him playing another position on defense one that would require a little more range
absolutely and I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game it’d surprise a lot of people you might even be able to put him in center field swing and a broken bat flare fires across the diamond and that’s the first out in the bottom of the fifth well that actually works out for the hitter if it’s not a broken bat it’s hit hard enough for a double play but with the slower roller defense does a nice job at least getting one out of it and here’s the catcher bone nailer a walk and he’s also singled a little bit low man at second right through there for a strike and that’s off the inside edge two and one thomas leads off second with one gone in the inning next offering is in for a strike swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and two away now
oh nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him but that’s pretty much what happened very hitable location but he found a way to just get it by him arius stands in now and watches strike one
goodness i think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat you don’t get many like that in that location i don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound cleveland that’s a strike and it’s on two
and a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact good eye right there
i don’t know how you take that one after the called strike on the corner just a little bit off the edge swing and a miss struck him out and we’re back here’s the left fielder Brendan Donovan in the air left field down the line and that’ll get off into the seats and a base hit and a good start to the inning just so sound in his mechanics hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field
so up next Mason Win he’s two for two first pitch misses 10 a short stop takes the ball that’s good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout nobody out runner at first fouls one off two and two gets a piece there we’ll do it again he’s mixing his pitches really well late on that fast ball after seeing the change up see if he can elevate one think if he does he’ll get the swing and miss
this one high in the air to left center quan settles underneath it and he makes the catch and there’s one away and now the right fielder Alec Burlson 0 for two in this one and first pitch fast ball is in for a strike

they know that he can get a right-hander out but he’s in position to face a couple of lefties this inning anel Martinez digs in for the Guardians and first offering is fouled off and that gets the top of the zone for a strike meanwhile activity in the bullpen phil Mton the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up number 49 also throwing in the air fairly deep to right field burlson sizing this one up pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one down steven Quan digs in for the Guardians he’s kind of an outlier especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power

yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits
next offering is down low singi one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore so when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that as plus value
absolutely if he’s doing damage now if he’s rolling over and and grounding out then it’s a different story but yeah if he could put the ball in the gaps or over the fence 100%
the Guardians up big in this one here in the bottom of the sixth spoils that one and it remains two and two
yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while you want to be ready to hit the fast ball sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there manzardo in the box here lets that one go for a ball one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter next offering in there for a strike and it’s two and one and that is out of play yeah and I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night

when you’re taking your lead over there at first you got to be very careful this guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move next offering upstairs no he’s really working him away this at bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a rollover something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield the two is in for a strike
back door with a breaking ball just got the corner there’s nothing you can really do with that

this guy’s got such a good sinker as a hitter you’ve got to look up in the zone if you look down you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt got him swinging for the strikeout couldn’t catch up to the heater this one isn’t exactly close chris let’s go off script for a moment

i don’t remember that they did i think they were pretty cool with me in terms of celebrating my rookie year first home run came in Anaheim against the Angels and I always love to watch now though especially when
that player is unsuspecting you know some guys they’ve they’ve been around long enough to know there’s a good chance I’m going to get the silent treatment but when that player’s maybe been grinding it out for a little while and finally gets that home run is expecting the big lift coming into the dugout and they just stonewall him it’s awesome misses three and two now every once in a while they’ll work that same trick on a veteran player if say he’s been cold or hasn’t hit a home run in a long time and that’s always fun when you don’t see it coming at all and everybody in the dugout goes crickets on him
yeah and and that veteran player’s usually got a response for those individuals with one or the other hands
so now it’s Dolan Aronado that
was your worst start one year didn’t you start like three for 33 or something
oh it was awesome it was I mean it was awful not awesome it was awesome for It was awesome for pitchers facing me but it was
awful for me it sounded like some type of deal at a fast food restaurant like three for 33 or something bases empty one away you’re in the top half of inning number seven swing and a miss struck him out so he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game
came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it’s a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they’ve got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there ball that’s inside up the middle safe at first and an infield single keeps the inning going
if he would have had just a little quicker release going up the middle he’s maybe able to get that out right there and that’s the kind of play that defines the best shorts stops between just the average ones now it’s the second baseman Nolan Gorman fast ball for a strike now a check swing but he held up
one to Jay-Z the runner at first with two gone now a highf fly ball out to left center quan heads after it he’s there he’s got it and that is that [Music] and welcome back to the ballpark and now the first baseman Carlos Santana tap foul at the plate palante 26 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2019 that misses the zone now one and two and down on strikes he goes and he’s registered three Ks in this one didn’t agree with the call at the plate right there
again a game like this that’s just too close to take it’s a blowout game guys have been out here for a while umpire saying “Hey let’s go cut it loose with the bat.”
Here’s Lane Thomas now he’s got a single a double and a triple in this game a home run gets him the cycle

that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts two down base is empty daniel Schne getting ready to hit one for three first pitch doesn’t find the zone and another ball swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side that’ll find the stands and it’s even up and that’s a little bit high making four strikeouts in a row just cruising along impeccable command in that one three batters three strikeouts that’s electric stuff out there on the mound a new pitcher in the game Cade Smith and you know bullpin guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game so we’ll see how sharp he is your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well
now the catcher up to hit Pedro Pah that one’s upstairs ball one movement in the bullpen slade Sone up and throwing now a fly ball to right center thomas sizes this one up brings it in one away next to hit Garrett Hson this is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively Chris and when you talk about preventing runs from being scored this guy is a big contributor i was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense especially at a premier position and that’s what he does
he swings and fouls one off
the hitting’s going to come around he’s going to figure it out but right now his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense that one not close
