Joshua Ravensbergen Surprised To Be Selected By San Jose Sharks In First Round, 30th Overall

josh here’s San Jose Shark how’s it feel feels incredible it’s such a cool moment hearing your name called yeah something I’ll remember forever so cool
you’re here with family um who have you been able to share this moment with so far
uh yeah my mom and dad you know they’ve sacrificed a lot for me to get here so super cool I can spend with them and then my brother and then one of my uncles came down too
what do you know about the San Jose Sharks
uh know you got a bright promising future lots of young guys so yeah it’s a good good spot to be in couldn’t be more excited you come from the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League you weren’t drafted into the Western Hockey League how much more special is this moment because of that journey you’ve been on makes it so cool first time getting drafted and Sharks in the first round feels feels absolutely unbelievable you know after not getting drafted the dub like I thought I always believed I was going to get here but you know the moment actually happening was just Yeah feels so cool yeah words can’t even describe it
you think about your time in Prince George what have the Cougars done to help you develop and and reach this moment
uh the coaching staff up there was great i they believed in me a lot and gave me a lot of opportunity and I think I was able to take it and run with it when I first got there and you know just the belief they put in me and kind of confidence and know the ability to play a lot of games is something I’m really appreciative of of and I did a great job
i know you’ve got a a goalie coach that’s been with you for a long ways what can you say about Shawn Murray and how much he’s helped you yeah he’s probably one of the biggest reasons why I’m here in the spot right now like after not getting drafted the dub he was the one who was able to get me an opportunity with PG and you know he was the first one who kind of put that belief in my head and I remember him pulling me over and like pee-wee and asking me you know if you want to if you want to go somewhere in this game you can so it’s kind of the first time kind of put that belief in my head that you know maybe I can do this and yeah he’s a big big role in you know my hockey journey so far bit of a wait for you today but did you have a feeling about the Sharks as the day went on
no I I had no clue I was going to go to the Sharks so hearing my name call was a little bit of a surprise but so cool what has this week and this experience been like for you
yeah it’s been unbelievable as I said especially not getting drafted of the Dub and now coming here with all my family and just being able to experience it together and you know know that all of the sacrifices you know they’ve paid off off up to this point if you went back to that kid who didn’t hear his name called in the WHL draft and told him “Hey you’re going to go in the first round of the NHL draft,” what would that be like
that would be pretty cool like as I said earlier like always even when I wasn’t picked I believed you know I was going to get here but maybe came a little earlier than expected but you know from that I know that you know it’s only the first step and it’s what I do after this that really matters but still try to enjoy this moment because it it’s unreal
what would you have told yourself i think I would have just told myself you know it’s gonna be okay and you know things have a way to tend to work themselves out what’s the best part about the game of hockey for you
uh for me I think it’s just the adrenaline you get before a game they I love it with thrill especially when you’re playing you know a team people maybe have your the underdogs and just a challenge and go up and got to overcome a challenge and win a game and celebrate with the guys is the best feeling in the world
have you been out to San Jose or anywhere in the Bay Area no no never it’ll be my first time
are you looking forward to it now yeah yeah I’m really looking forward to it heard it’s a great spot
what do you know about the Sharks and maybe their goalie core and how what are you excited about
uh I think I just know they have a lot of great young prospects and I’ve heard their goal coaches are really good so I’m really excited to get down there and meet everybody and it should be a good week at death camp
is there someone that you model your game after
uh I like I like watching Jake i don’t know how much my game really models his but he’s somebody I enjoy watching you know he’s big like me he skates really well he reads the play really well and I’d say I’ try to take some little things from him but he’s just someone I enjoy watching you hear a lot the phrase goalies are weird if you had to change that last word from weird to anything else what would you change it to
uh goalies are exhilarating it’s
a good word how

Prince George Cougars goaltender Joshua Raavensbergen went undrafted in the WHL, and while he knew he’d make it to the NHL Draft, he was still surprised when the San Jose Sharks called his name 30th overall.
