and welcome into the ballpark happy to have you with us major League Baseball on a Sunday afternoon it’s the Athletics taking on the New York Yankees and now first pitch coming your way next your you just about set to go and on the mound in this one max free singing he’s been outstanding and should be fun to watch well when you have a guy that can limit the opponent to very little run production you have a great chance to win a ball game when he takes them out he’s just having an outstanding season so far you hope he can maintain it because if he can he’ll be in a nice conversation at the end of the year jacob Wilson the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one first pitch 135 the lefty the 10 and that skips in the dirt that’s a bullet but it goes foul [Applause] oh that hit him
come on now and he’s safe at first great hustle to win the foot race there catcher coming out to check on him it looked like he got him on his back leg so you’ll wonder if that might be a problem for him in terms of pushing off the rubber
yeah it’s a great point and we’ll have to see how he looks but to me it appears he’s moving pretty well i think it’s just going to sting for a while but hopefully nothing more now the number two hitter Brent Rooker clips the outside corner and one goodness i think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat you don’t get many like that in that location i don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there in the mouth nobody out runner at first breaking ball misses down and away
well I think he’s trying to get a feel for where that one missed i mean it could have gone either way but he looked a little shocked for a second there good eye on that spot he’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here i love it and that’s outside nobody out fouled off again and it remains three and two freed out of the stretch fires and ball forward two aboard base knock and now a free pass this has the makings of a big inning if they can get a couple more quality at bats
first and second no outs now it’s the rookie DH Nick Curts
that misses and that’s ball one kicks and fires [Applause] swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and there’s one down and time now to check out the A’s lineup and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport Jacob Wilson
and Boo he’s the table setter for this offense team leader and on base percentage I mean that just gives your teammates plenty of chances to cash in and bring them around to score man I used to love when I had a guy out in second base or third base easy to get those RBI’s game after game you know a guy like this what he’s going to provide and the opportunities that other guys are going to get in the lineup swing and a highf fly ball right field no trouble here puts it away for the out that’s out number two here’s Louis keep an eye on this at bat because even though it’s early it could change the outcome of this game look for your pitch and attack it squirts away a little bit [Music] and that finds the mark on the outside corner and it’s one and one this one in the air center field gisham is there makes the catch and that is that a strand a couple and now the Bombers will get their shot no score back after this on the show back at Yankee Stadium and our pitcher in this game Jeffrey Springs chris how about a scouting report well he’s been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it’s the release point maybe it’s the motion but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side trent Gisham the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one the one and a strike in there
one way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity they’re doing that right here yeah that’s fouled off slider misses outside [Applause] that’s towards center one away [Applause] as we take a look now at the New York Yankees lineup
and Chris this group has been struggling to put up runs lately well they haven’t been on base a ton and even when they are they haven’t been hitting very well with the runners on base so they need a player or two to really step up have some quality at bats hit according to the situation and sort of break out of this i think if they do the rest of this lineup will follow aaron Judge batting with one down takes the strike
well he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there couldn’t pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you’ll see in this at bat to hit up the middle and judge out on the play
batting third the first baseman Ben Rice
ben Rice stepping in now for the Yankees not only can he hit the cover off the ball he’s got a great eye as well [Music] that one a little bit high and that is ball one
ball one no strikes late on that fast ball
i think he was sitting off speed there highf fly ball out towards left center schuman corrals it and that ends the inning scoreless after one back in the Bronx second inning set to go and now here is Gio Urchella york max Freed will go to work fast ball on the inside corner for a strike close but called a ball and it’s a ball and a strike that one called just inside I think and on the mound he’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it though but he clearly thought it clipped the corner comes up empty that’s strike two gets a piece and stays alive set down on strikes he’s got to be frustrated with that call wow that’s a tough call for the hitter but the pitcher will take that all day long
not quite in the strike zone but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call so hitters are going to have to make an adjustment but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can and first offering is fouled off one out base is empty he swings and fouls one off the O2 strike three and that’s two in a row gosh here it is hit it three pitch strikeout all fast balls man he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now
two out space is empty now Max Schuman and first pitch fastball is in for a strike no score here in the second swinging a foul straight back [Music] swing and a miss struck him out and he strikes out the side here in the second so they make short work of him there we go to the bottom of inning number two we’re tied nothing nothing bottom half of inning number two the batter now john Carlos Stanton

not giving him a pitch to hit there isn’t a bad thing he’s dealing with a great first pitch hitter up there check swing yelled now two and0 next offering is fouled back
instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in inside shot missed swinging a foul out of play he goes down looking that was a really nice pitch call for that putaway slider right there you look at the sequence in that at bat and he hadn’t thrown it yet so just makes it really tough to recognize and fight off with two strikes i’m sure it looked like a fast ball all the way until it wasn’t jazz Chisum Jr now
seems like he’s making contact with everything lately batting over 300 so far this month
and that one upstairs ball one good pitch down around the knees you want to be there all game in a park like this a popup sometimes will carry out out to center two down that exists no left fielder

you talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list yeah the first offering a fast ball for a strike and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively one of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind him and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either hittingwise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way and this is what this guy does [Applause] making four strikeouts in a row just cruising along well I’m not really sure why he let that one go by i mean out of the hand it had a lot of the strike zone sure it had some good armside run at the end to move to the outside part of the plate but with two strikes you got to be ready to swing it there and you can’t leave it in the umpire’s hands so up next Jacob Wilson reached on an infield single his first time there’s the strike wilson in his rookie season hitting leadoff in today’s game a former first round pick in 2023 one down base is empty tapped at the plate but it’s a foul ball top of the third no score foul ball it stays nothing and two that one’s upstairs ball one that’s a really good job of laying off the O2 high fast ball is going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter even though he’s behind in the count misses the countdown now two and two really good take especially with two strikes another one that’s five straight strikeouts well right now he’s in cruise control autopilot just dominating these hitters it doesn’t look like it’s a fun at bat and all of a sudden you become in awe of this guy on the mound somebody’s got to break this thing up that’s five straight strikeouts got to put a ball in play next up for the A’s Brent Rooker he reached out to walk his first time upstairs and it’s one and0 [Music] and another ball two out base is empty that one misses and it’s three and0 three and0 this one in the air chisum under it makes the grab and that’ll end the inning and one two three go the A’s still no score set for the bottom of the third leading off Anthony Vulpi [Applause] highfly ball and that one curling foul down the right side swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field schuman makes the catch and a quick out number one batting it the catcher

dominant performance for him today boo just two hits allowed so far no runs across either and he’s had an answer for just about every hitter he’s faced so I don’t think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much
ben Rice the next to hit fly to left his first time that one in there across the letters and a breaking ball misses outside [Applause] 82 just a really nice slider down and in there he wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement swing and a miss struck him out now one away he’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strikeout now here’s John Carlos Stanton struck out looking at his first at bat swang and a ball lined out towards center

that was just a great jump and route to the ball well it had to be if he was going to cover all that ground and bring in that sinking liner that’s the way it had to be done nice job here’s a third baseman Jazz Chisum Jr fly to center his first time he’s 0 for one strike on the inside corner strike two another O2 count right here pitcher just in the driver’s seat he can go anywhere he wants to go right here drilled out towards left center field that’s bad and it’s gone [Applause] that’s worth the price of admission it’s two nothing well baseball gave us jazz and Jazz Chism Jr gives baseballs the lucky fans with home runs like that [Applause] that’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap and you know there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either he let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here base is empty with two away and next for New York Jason Dominguez and first offering is fouled off base is empty two away but two runs are in we’re here in the bottom of the fourth hit on the ground to the right side
he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it two-run blast for the Yankees this inning it’s now a two nothing ball game we go to the top of the fifth gioella to the plate

well after putting up a nice inning on offense got some runs across this is where you look for the starter to go out there have a shutdown inning don’t give that other team any hope uh you just hope that he can get through this inning get the bats back up there while they’re hot you know these athletics showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one starter’s leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is but so far he’s been really effective in this one little bit low
you know sometimes it just takes getting to the bullpen in order to be able to score runs and that might be the case today [Applause] next offering is down low
now in this three ball count down in the ball game you got to be very selective take your walk if they’ll give it to you that one misses so a lead off walk
what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that wall

these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations giorella steps in he is struck out and he is walked drilled in the air high and deep right field that’s back there and that is gone a shot to the opposite field it’s 22 chris we knew this moment was coming for him soon
yep up and it finally came we knew it was only a matter of time before he’s going to connect with one just like that just too good of a hitter at the plate welcome to the game first pitch out of the bullpen a tough one and you know he’s just trying to get one in there for a strike and on the other side as a hitter it’s a great time to be aggressive and let it fly it’s not what they were looking for when they turned to him but now he’s got to find a way to reset

the shortstop Anthony Vulpi that one fouled off you know these Yankees need to bring up the quality of their at bats and specifically their swings you really can’t pin it on one player because we’ve seen soft contact up and down this lineup it’s time to make some adjustments because this approach is just off that’s a ball tried the sweeper
the cause for these struggles is a little different for each guy for some it’s timing and for others it’s mechanics whatever it is they need to start hitting the ball harder and the one two misses to even the count
two strikes out to short throw off line he is safe and a nice job there to keep it from getting away that’s a play you expect your shorts stop to make pretty much every time pretty routine hard to tell if he didn’t get a great grip on it or the mechanics on him just broke down but that gives this offense an extra out to work with and now the catcher comes up to hit Austin Wells [Applause] check swing called strike if pure base runner you got to stay dialed in here look for anything in the dirt try your best to get into scoring position
the go-ahead run aboard at first nobody out ru takes off pitch outside and that’s a stolen base not even close and the go ahead run is now in scored position [Applause] bouncer to second urias throws to first in time and one away in the bottom of the seventh not a bad outcome in that spot the runner moves up to third and now they have a chance to drive in the go ahead run it’s not a knock but at the end of the day it’s a good bat

well good luck against this guy he’s been extremely tough to hit this year his numbers are excellent [Music] back to the top of the order now now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s Jacob Wilson one for three [Applause] swing and a miss and it’s 0 and one movement in the Yankees pen devin Williams up and throwing [Applause] that’s inside and now it’s even one and one and there’s a ball out towards right center field judge really on his horse for this one lays out and makes the play it’s hard to believe a man that large is that athletic
just a great diving catch by Aaron Judge and when he hits the ground everybody feels it [Applause] next up for the A’s Brent Rooker oh he doesn’t get the call and that is ball one [Applause] just And a foul ball makes the count two and one all tied up and we’re in the top of the eighth [Applause] swing and a miss two seconds still two and two after the foul ball that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was [Applause] [Applause] swings through it and that’s a strike out move if you can set up a good two strike splitter with the fast ball the previous pitch it’s going to be so tough to recognize and adjust your swing to get a piece of it clearly had him reaching for it right there and now Nick Curts and there’s the strike two down nobody on b [Music] tap foul at the plate and a ball in two strikes hit hard on the ground to short in plenty of time the first out number three nothing doing there for the A’s score remains deadlocked at 2-2 now pitching for the
