San Jose Sharks DOMINATE NHL Draft Grades | Potentially Four NHL Players Drafted?

the nhl draft grades are in and the san jose sharks looks like they ace things you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the san jose sharks part of the locked on podcast network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the bay area my name is jd young caretaker at the reef also the co-host of locked on nhl i want to thank you for making lockdown sharks your first listen proudly part of the lockdown network we cover your team every day if you want to be in every day all you have to do is just follow wherever you get podcast or you can watch on youtube as well and today we’re going to be examining some of the uh draft grades out there as uh we’re past the draft rate now we’re going to see what some of the experts think as we look at six different websites uh and view what they thought of the san jose sharks draft so before we get to that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by fanduel right now new fanduel customers can get $150 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins all right uh before we get to the draft uh do of course uh back home great time in la uh i want to thank you guys of course for the support um just an outstanding weekend um from support from you guys just all the views all the downloads everything like that uh thank special thank you to you know people who donated uh for me to kind of help cover the expenses while i was there um you know with with these trips and stuff like this is out of pocket for me like any like going to the draft and stuff like that all out of pocket expenses uh you guys just blown away by by your support again not only financially but just the like you know all the great messages i received from you guys and again the views and the downloads and everything like that just absolutely blown away so uh without further ado let’s get back to our mediocre content that we try to provide here at locked on sharks um so we’re going to be looking uh at some of you know uh reputable sources right uh this isn’t just bob’s uh poor bob uh bob’s you know draftgrades.com type of thing somebody i bet that domain’s out there somebody has it uh but anyway this isn’t just going to be like bobsdgrades.com like we’re looking at uh reputable sources you know some people who have been on the show like we’re we’re you know uh trying to to see what the the experts think because i know there’s like a small segment of sharks fans maybe it’s just a very loud segment who did not like the sharks draft class which i do find a little headscratching right um yes maybe the sharks didn’t find a a right-handed defenseman um in the draft i i i hear that but it’s you know one i think mike greer kind of deserves the benefit of the doubt especially when you look at the way he’s drafted in the you know the past couple seasons um with the sharks and how these prospects are starting to kind of come into form um and two like this draft was kind of meh to be honest so i do like that micro approach of just swing for upside uh in a draft class that is a little kind of maybe um not up to standard compared to some of the other drafts so uh let’s hear let’s get into some of the draft grades here so uh we have rachel dory from espn uh she graded the sharks as an a uh she had them fourth in her rankings though at least uh jay had the islanders first with an a+ and like the islanders guys like freaking knocked this draft out of the cl just the first three picks alone like uh you walked away with three guys who could have all been potential top 10 picks including the best player in the draft and matthew schaefer like the islanders killed this draft um yeah the boston bruins at number two uh the carolina hurricanes at number three and then your san jose sharks uh grade uh a at number four uh the ducks next at uh a a minus the flames at a minus the red wings at an a minus the pr’s a minus uh the flyers a minus um so on and so forth but uh she goes to say anytime you have the best forward michael misa the best goalie joshua ravensburgen uh in the draft you’re going to be happy there’s a real chance the sharks came away with a starting goalie an elite forward who scores over a point per game that alone would find them graded with at least a b+ add in simon wang the highest drafted chinese-b born player in nhl history with elite skating ability and a six foot6 frame the sharks bolstered every area of their prospect pool i thought blake fidler would have been a more sound selection at number 33 but the sharks like wang’s raw ability try not to giggle and upside which is a decision i can get behind if wayne wang hits he’s going to be impactful defender in the nhl that teams wish they’d have drafted getting cole mckini at 53 was a great value as well mckenna’s got more offense to give it at a minimum he’ll be a bottom six players reliable defensively and on the penalty kill when all is said and done there’s a real chance the sharks get four players from this draft including a dual threat two-way center is going to make the sharks a night m a a matchup nightmare for teams over the next decade so rachel she hears you right i i assume blake filler would have been the pick there too but uh wayne’s upside i think is just too much for the sharks to to pass up there and again uh you’re drafting for upside not for uh what the player is right now and they feel like simon wang has a massive runway here for them and yes he’s not on the right side and blake filler’s on the right side i get it but wang’s a better skater and he’s bigger than blake fiddler uh which is hard to say for a guy who’s 6’4 200 and whatever pounds blake fiddler is simon wang is bigger and he’s a better skater than and they think that those tools uh they can work with so um yes so rachel she hears you she believes she says she would have gone the fiddler but again feels like the simon wang uh the upside with with wang is too hard to pass up so uh our good friend stephen ellis who i hung out with at the draft actually bothered too much probably uh sorry stephen uh he so he had uh number one he had the islanders again with an a+ number two he had the flyers with an a+ number three your san jose sharks with an a+ uh grade and then he has the blackhawks with an a uh preds with an a at number five uh calgary flames a minus at seven wings uh or sorry flames a minus at six detroit red wings at seven with an a minus at number eight the pittsburgh penguins with an a minus number nine seattle kraken with an a minus number 10 the columbus blue jackets with an a minus so uh as for the san jose sharks steven goes on to say “hard to go wrong with the top forward and perceived best goalender cole mckini isn’t a bad pick either i’m not convinced he’s going to produce in the nhl but he’s a solid pickup at 53 the real draw here is misa who already looks like a future nhl star ravensburgen will either become a perfect tandem piece with yars ascarov become a high value trade chip wang is one of my favorite defenders because he’s raw but the skating and size are absolute killers i think their top four picks can all become impact players so did talk to steven a little bit uh during the draft um i know ravensburg wasn’t his number one goalie he was his number two goalie but he did kind of like say like with the sharks and what they want like kind of look for in goalies like he totally gets that pick uh at number uh 30 for for san jose um so you know but you know again kind of as i talked to stephen throughout but he love like he loved what the sharks did in this draft and then like after the simon wang pick like he was ecstatic he loves uh he loves simon wang he loves his potential uh he was uh stephen was on this show talking you know he did the profile for simon wang uh and for for san jose getting him at number 33 uh he thinks that there’s just so much yes it’s raw but just the tools and foundation to work with um there are a huge reason why he got drafted where he didn’t while there you know there’s concerns about maybe wayne won’t be able to produce offensively um if you want a shutdown defensive force and it sounds like that’s what wang’s going to eventually be for san jose and yeah again even feels like the sharks knock this one out of the park and uh again getting misa doesn’t really hurt uh adding him to to whatever what the sharks have already so uh we’re going to look at some other people uh including what scott wheeler from uh the athletic thought about and our good friend chris peters uh so we’re going to kind of dig into what some of their draft profile or what some of their draft grades here uh in just one second summer sports are in full swing and whether you’re into baseball under the lights golf on the green or high stakes soccer action fanduel is the best way to make every game more exciting you’re already following the action why not make it a little bit more thrilling with fanduel you can get in touch uh on the game with your friends are getting sunburned at the beach um right now just uh the giants can’t score any runs and they just lost uh a lot of games to the white socks and the marlins uh so maybe maybe you’re you’re buying the dip right now with with the giants a little bit at least take the under on runs with the giants you’re probably going to have a good day with that so uh if you’re new to fanduel new customers and get $5 uh just bet $5 and you’ll get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins open the fanduel app today or visit fanel.com to get started all right before we continue with uh some of the draft grades do of course want to thank you for making locked on sharks your first listen again proudly part of the locked onet cover your team every day um just because the draft’s over doesn’t mean that there’s going to be more content coming we have free agency that starts on tuesday uh so we’ll have you whatever happens on tuesday as mike creer tries to spend uh $25 million or whatever he’s got to spend to hit the cap floor uh we’ll got you covered there and then we’re going to dig deeper into some of these draft uh you know these these new sharks prospects uh as we uh get throughout the summer so make sure you follow along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on youtube as well all right uh let’s view what scott wheeler of the athletic has to say so uh he did winner so he has kind of four rankings so his winners teams i believe won out in their competition by consistently hitting where they selected overtime winners teams i believe that did well where they were selected even if they may not have picked the exact players i would have overtime losers teams i believe have done better but might in time get passing grades and losers teams that he believes underperform relative to where they select so that kind of gives on a curve bend you know that way if teams uh don’t have as many draft picks etc etc uh they can still kind of do well for their draft position right so uh winners he has the new york islanders who again just like absolutely killed it in this draft uh he has the calgary flames also as a winner um he has and then he has number three for the san jose sharks and here’s what he put uh i think michael misa is going to be a top of the lineup star in the league and gives sharks arguably three of the best under 20 or three of the 10 best under 21 forwards in the game with melbriny and will smith well i thought they’d take a defenseman with their second uh first joshua ravensburg and belonged in that range it gives him a second high-end young goalie with yslaf ascarov then they kicked off day two by taking a defenseman and simon wang who has a ton of untapped potential is already a high-end skater at nearly 6’6 wang is one of the most interesting prospects and stories in the draft and becomes the highest drafted china born player in nhl history uh if he makes it he’s already signed uh entitled agency wme in china and could become one of the first major team sport athletes since yao ming his career is bigger than him for the growth of chinese hockey sharks fans are going to love cheering him on i like the cole mckenna selection at 53 as well mckini is a strongly built center who excels in the faceoff circle cares about detail and checks checking off the puck was productive at the ntdp team that didn’t have a star or a first round pick and i think he’s a very clear path to becoming a 3c for them behind celebrator zack sharp showed enough in the ncaa championship uh western michigan university broncos to war getting drafted where he did as well i’ve got a ton of time for small but consistent in work ethic and impact uh richard glant even if it’s a long shot the only picks that left me scratching my head was teddy uh moern in the third round i didn’t view him as a draft pick otherwise i thought they did very well or really well sorry so um wheeler really is high even if you read his first round draft grade like he’s very high on on misa especially the misa smith celabbrini combo and just having those three guys that you can basically especially in big time moments like you can have one of those guys on the ice at you know basically at any time type of of scenario or you could always man the potential nuclear option of going misa on the left wing celebrating on the right or celebrating the center and smith on the right wing like the potential of doing that at some point uh oh my goodness just think about that uh for a little bit but uh yeah wheeler you know i know there was some talk of like you know of of deon or potentially fondell or whom you know porter martone at at two but you know reading some of the other stuff that wheeler wrote feels like sharks made the right choice at going with uh misa at number two and whatever the smokescreen game was for for mike greer to kind of pull this off we’ll never know but uh in the long run they made the the right choice here so uh looking at our good friend chris peters um so of flow hockey he gave the sharks uh he gave the sharks a uh a here um so sharks couldn’t really go wrong at number two and they got the most explosive forward in the class by selecting misa they also added potential goalie of the future and joshua ravensburg who at number 30 provides better overall value as a potential number one than some of the other options there again the draft is all about value the sharks made a big bet on upside with uh hal wing uh or simon wang who is 6’6 and just figuring out how he needs to play at his size but has tremendous mobility and some skill cole mckenna was my number 32 on my list and the sharks got him at number 53 i think he’ll be a legit two-way center for them down the road those first four picks alone are enough uh to put them on the a train as i think they’ve got to be sensing things are coming together for the future of the club as they build more around mlin celibbrini [Music] um picking again if you get four draft picks out of your like four four draft picks out of a class to contribute um that’s a huge huge win that does even like if you get someone else in the later rounds to pop um and yes those were all top two round picks but um you know i i think he makes a really great point there about the ravensburgen pick right would you rather have a potential goalie of the future or a potent you know a goalie that you can pair with asarov right um than a potential four or five defenseman and yes the sharks do need more right-handed defenseman um there but i i think with the way that they’re building this and projecting this out that might be a route where you maybe lean a little bit more via free agency or via trades to try to get that done but um you know i i think you know ravensburg and there’s a lot to work with there and the same thing with wing there’s a lot to work with with both those picks there so uh we’re going to look at uh the score and bleacher report here and kind of see how they had the sharks uh draft rankings and uh what they kind of uh what they thought of them so we’ll uh we’ll get to that in just one second all right before we continue i do want to thank you for making lock on sharks your first listen today for your second listen check out the locked onel podcast there is no offse uh we still got you covered here at locked on bringing you the daily leaguewide stories that matter most with local coverage you love from locked on find locked on youtube wherever you listen to podcast all right so switching over to the score um so who uh so this was by kyle kushman of the score uh he gave the san jose sharks an a uh i think they were the only team in the pacific yeah they were the only team in the pacific division to get an a he’s a little bit of a tough grader compared to some of the other uh ones so um the oilers got a d again they didn’t have great they didn’t have a lot of ammo there but still um he writes “the sharks didn’t overthink the second overall pick and landed another superb offensive piece who joins mack on celebrity and will smith as part of the franchise’s core misa’s high-end motor speed and obvious offensive talent are incredibly exciting to imagine alongside celebrini in particular uh ravensburg is a fascinating pick considering san jose acquired top goalender prospect yoscar last summer meanwhile wang is one of the best stories in the draft he was born and raised in china before moving to canada pursue his hockey dreams at 12 years old he’s huge at 6’6 and can skate um interesting he has c uh misa moving to the wing but still um i i i’m still very much in i think misa is your 2c and smith is the wing moves to the wing because i i do think that misa’s details especially defensively are just a little bit better than will smith and uh while will smith played very well and and got much better i just think that misa’s floor with that is is already i think a little bit higher than smith’s and will smith was known for more of his right creating offensively um that was always his game again like you’re you’re you’re if you if smith wins it then either way again that that flexibility between the the players here of what celebrating smith and misa all bring to the table and just gives you uh gives you plenty of options so um interesting to kind of look at like who the other teams that got a’s from uh him uh bruins got an a minus um the canadians got an a minus uh even though like they didn’t have a first round pick after trading for noah dobson um looking still kind of going through um wow he gave the blackhawks a b c minus for the abs because he only had like three picks but um yeah he’s a tough grader man uh the islanders got of course got an a+ because what they did so yeah not there’s only three teams that got a’s so tough tough graater um from kyle kushman um but hey i’ll take it i’ll take it for san jose so uh finally looking at the bleacher report um so this is from nicholas nathansson um so he also gave the sharks an a um was it a or a+ sorry excuse me the sharks scored the draft’s best all-around player in michael misa misa finished with 134 points in 65 ohl games this past season the most among any player in all major junior leagues relentless motor with a game iq that is well beyond his 18 years of age there’s some six skill uh six skills and playmaking abilities making him a tantalizing angel prospect misa should be able to contribute meatly to these sharks uh alongside last year’s top pick mlabbrini so um yeah he also very thought uh kind of he thought very highly of the sharks right there uh like maybe i didn’t myself didn’t do enough good job of kind of hyping up misa coming into the draft um but like yeah man uh michael misa is going to be really good right like walking away with with misa and then ravensburgen and if simon wang becomes anywhere close to what we think simon wang potentially could be like the sharks sharks are going to be walking away feeling really great about the pieces and i think uh especially wayne in particular next season with another kind of like a full season in the o uh under his belt like i think we’re going to be feeling much differently about wang and where his potential lies guys again i don’t expect him to be a massive point producer like don’t expect like the sam dickinson a bajillion points that’s just not wang’s game but i do think he is going to be in a good position like i think he’s going to be one of those guys where the growth that we see from wang now to like two years from now i i just think that runway there’s a lot there and for a guy who’s still 17 years old like there’s there’s there’s a ton of potential there so and the ravensburg and pick like a lot of people a lot of people called that like a lot of people wanted the sharks to do that um i was a little hesitant on it you know even kind of leading up to the draft but i do like the more i kind of think about it and wrap my head around it and especially with the way the nhl’s trending right you have gonna be having an 84 game schedule here really soon like you need two goalies who can play 40 to 45 games at any given time and right like we we see how teams are like thirsty for goending right um guys teams are willing to give you know got goenders who we you know maybe don’t think that are super great they’re willing to pay an exorbitant amount for for guys uh to come in and maybe try to solve their issues and i think maybe mike greer hopefully i think he realize kind of where the direction of of goalending is going and rather just keep stocking up on it right like you can maybe you just don’t have enough you can never have enough goalies right and like the more i think about it the more i really like it and especially that like would you rather have a goal the projectively the best goal in the pro the the draft who might be like your 1b of the future would you rather have a fourth or fifth defenseman and i think the sharks thought hard about it and said you know what let’s just take the goalie right now and we can feel like we can find more defenseman elsewhere and even simon wing right do i think he’s going to be a number one defenseman probably not but i think there’s a lot of intrigue there and and there’s a lot of potential for him to be a kind of shut down matchup nightmare type of of player a guy you can you know you need to protect a lead uh in the last two minutes of a game the thing that sharks struggled with last year uh you need to protect a lead simon wang can get out there and help shut things down right if and the especially the way dickinson’s kind of his projection and what we’re expecting from dickinson wang you got muk mcdoul who was playing well last year like there you you see what mike greer is trying to kind of build towards and what he’s looking forward so uh i get it i get it if you’re like the sharks should have taken fidler etc etc um but i feel like with these top four picks here like the sharks are going to have four guys who all have a legitimate chance to make the nhl and then if you get any of the other guys to pop right that that’s that’s a massive massive win uh for you so um we’re going to put a pin in the draft we’ll be back to like to continue to kind of go through it later on but uh we got free agency coming up so we’re going to be kind of shifting gears towards that looking at uh we’ll be back tomorrow to kind of get you ready for free agency kind of get caught up on all the news and notes and look at who might be potentially out there uh then we’ll of course on tuesday we’ll have you know we’ll we’ll break down whatever happens for the sharks and whoever they sign as they again have all the cap money uh cap place in the world they have to sign players so uh we’ll see what mike greer what he’s got cooking here because uh got to do something got to spend that money somewhere so we’ll be back uh tomorrow so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on youtube as well follow the show on twitter facebook and instagram at lockdown sharks follow me on twitter and blue sky fryhole till tomorrow bye friends

  1. I was surprised they took Wang over Fiddler too, but they went for the player they like better. Both players are late birthdays who wouldn’t be NHL regulars until 2030, so the right vs left need
the team has now doesn’t matter so much.

The McKinney pick as a bottom-6 checking center is welcome and a great pick at #53. The Sharks will be a serious playoff team by the time he’s NHL ready and they need guys like that.

  2. As much as I was hoping for Schaefer (not nearly as many top prospect D-men as Forwards… in the Shark's system), his sample size is small, so there is risk.

Misa is a fairly safe commodity. He was exceptional status and we have a large sample size. He has a good shot (wrist and snap in a lot of clips) but his hockey sense and extremely good passing really impresses. We could easily have the best player from the draft. Almost certainly the best forward.

  3. Misa and McKinney were "A" picks. Wang and Ravensbergen are developmental projects that could 4-5 years to reach the NHL. They could hit big or bust. Overall grade B.

  4. I feel about as mad this draft for Grier not taking Spence or Fiddler at 33, as I did 2 yrs ago when they took Haltunnen over Andrew Cristall (which feels like a mistake now, looking at their stats.. and felt like a mistake at the time too)

But.. what do I know.. I just value skill over size..
    ..so, I know I’m dumb..
we should definitely keep taking size over skill.. Mike Rathje proved that to be a good draft strategy right?

(Not mad at 3 outta the first 4 picks.. just the 33rd pick really. So, it’s all good.
—> I still trust in GMMG… buut, he’s starting to make me stress out just a little) lol

    I mean.. it’s a good strategy to ice 9 left-handed D per night, right..
    …. Right?
    Oh wait.. it’s not?!
    Oh shit, we’re screwed! hahaha

  5. Sharks had the 2nd pick not the first…… they took the best player available….. The bitching is over Simon Wang…. GMMG is allowed to swing for upside…..Sometimes you have to take calculated risk to improve your team….Ravensberger was a home run…. Top goalie in the draft at 30 is great 👍….. I bet the Oilers wish they had a Ravensberger in the finals ( After he’s developed)….. Goalies are undervalued until you need one….. They can be the X factor in the playoffs.

  6. It was a draft which went against type. I'd been under the impression that GMMG had more urgency to get good. Wang and Ravensbergen are 5-6 years away. Fiddler is perhaps 3-4. Spence similar. Both fill positions of expected greater need.

But I'm not averse to waiting a bit longer if there's upside. Given the hard to predict nature of goalies, having another high end goalie prospect is reasonable. I'll say this on Steven Ellis, he had several d-men available ahead of Wang, who he'd ranked 50. Psenicka (34), Limatov (42), Rombach (46), Fiddler (26).

McKinney was a 40's pick they got in the 50's. Misa was the obvious choice, but its still a great pick.

Surprised how highly rated these sites were on the Sharks draft, though the Misa pick is going to make any draft pretty good.

  7. People whining about drafting defensemen and what hand they are just don't get it. You can't sit around and wait 4 or 5 years to see if they pan out and hope they don't hinder the rebuild. Forwards take less time to develop and can be more surefire picks. Besides, there's plenty of examples of d-men drafted in later rounds panning out as well as undrafted guys. I've always thought that defense is where they should spend their cap space surplus. Get established guys for the job to bring along a few chosen young deserving guys.

Edit: Doug did plenty of overdrafting of d-men in the first round and it always backfired. Especially chasing a right-handed d-man. His best moves were trading for and or signing free agents to fill those spots. Right side defensemen are the hardest to find because those dudes are left handed in real life, which is only 10% of the population.

  8. JD, One of the reasons so many of your fans are disappointed in the draft is that you hyped Fiddler and Brzustewicz. Seems strange that you're not disappointed too. You weren't pounding the table for Wang and Ravensbergen.

  9. I wonder if the fact that the Sharks already have a lot of prospects close to graduating factored into their decisions to take Ravensberger and Wang. Since they are more long-term prospects that could help keep the farm strong as some of these guys start becoming regular NHLers.

  10. At a minimum they got Misa. If the draft didn’t really have a lot of good prospects, getting a top goalie and taking a chance on a d man with high risk and reward sounds good to me. And a bottom 6 c man. Sounds great

  11. I think the Sharks not screwing up the second overall pick set this draft grade to an A. I was shocked when they passed up Fiddler for a goalie but tanking BPA will do that. I wanted them to draft Wang at 53 but if they thought he would not last that long I am good with them taking him at 33. I am sad we did not get Fiddler but I liked what they did in the first four picks. I really did not like the Mutryn, Sharp or Heise picks but they are late round picks in a weak draft year. Overall I would give the Sharks an A- grade.

  12. Forwards and a good goalie. Now, Sharks gotta looking at the defense. The smartest next pick in 2026 for San Jose would be Xavier Villeneuve from Blainville Armada.
