Jackson Smith Bringing Size And Skill To The Columbus Blue Jackets After Being Selected 14th Overall
is awesome as well um you know I played with Charlie Alec this year and uh kind of got to know a bit about the organization through him so um being able to go on the same team as him it’s pretty crazy
is this a team you thought you could end up on
honestly I had no clue um I didn’t talk to him that much throughout the year so going in their pick I I wasn’t um wasn’t 100% sure they were going to pick me uh but then picked by them it felt really nice
what’s this season been like for you how do you think your game has grown and what do you think about how your game stood out to Columbus yeah um I thought my game has grown a ton over this year over the past two years honestly just um offensively and defensively uh I’ve grown a lot uh on the blue line um finding lanes and also defensively off the rush and in my own zone um so I think I think just my overall full package was probably pretty appealing to them i feel like I’m a bit of a cannon guy uh so yeah I think that was a big thing and lastly just what does your junior organization mean to getting you to this moment
uh it’s it’s been everything i mean I credit so much of my success to my teammates and and the organization the coaches um and Tri Cities uh they’re they’re a huge piece to my development and I wouldn’t be here without them so uh I’m truly grateful for that
we talked a couple weeks ago about how you know you’ve grown that defensive part of your game and that the offense has been there um but playing that bigger style uh how did you want to show that to yeah you know I’m a bigger guy who skates really well so um I think I need to bring a bit more physicality back into my game uh so that’s something that I’m working on but also just using my skill set and my speed um to continue to and continue to grow that uh for the next level cuz I think that will be some of the biggest biggest pieces for me is my skating ability and my skill set at the next level and then just uh incorporating those other parts to my game and and making them stronger to make me more more full package player what what are you looking forward to in Florida um you know I don’t know much about the city so I think that’s something that in itself is just looking forward to getting to know the place and and getting to know the people there um and the organization itself so uh I think it’s almost more exciting not knowing anything about it and and getting to go there and and figure out uh what it’s all about um but I know I’m going to love it so it it’s going to be awesome the uh the reaction with Meredith getting the standing ovation and everything and how the hockey community what’s it feel like to then now you’re part of that you know part of that moment having sharing that moment with her
yeah that was awesome i mean just to see the the crowd uh stand behind the whole family and stand behind her uh so it was awesome to be able to share my condolences with her and uh you know have that moment with her it was it was really nice um you know it I grew up watching Johnny in uh in Calgary so being able to you know meet his wife and and be able to be a part of an organization that he was a part of um and you know hopefully help continue his legacy there uh it’s huge um so I’m super faithful

who’s here with you how big is the Smith plan artist
it’s pretty big um you know the Smith part itself I’m not sure but then my mom has you know friends and family and I have friends here so I think she said there’s a total of 40 people here so um big group of people so it’s super cool to be able to share this moment with them um and have them here with me and and and be able to celebrate with them what was uh all this talk about possibly getting him going to go to Penn State next year how’s that uh

you think has that go through your mind at all idea
yeah I mean you guys all know how incredible a player he is so to be able to get him is is incredible but I I don’t know anything about it um so I can’t really speak on uh if he’s coming or not um yeah

no no I can’t say anything about it so you know I guess we’ll have to see what happens here in the next couple weeks to month but I I have no clue what’s going to happen there
and I know this is the NHL draft but you’re pretty excited about Penn State next year i mean
yeah you know getting down there was it was incredible place and coach and staff was incredible so I’m super excited to grow my game there and uh you know become a better player so I can help the Columbus Blue Jackets as much as possible
