ready to go now here’s the Cardinal team brendan Donovan rolled softly but that goes foul fast ball for a strike well we call that keyhole even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it he’s not going to swing that early in the count got to be careful here this is the type of hitter that can punish you even with pitches outside the zone and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again almost got him this guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat he just battles up there he doesn’t take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away
that one almost got him okay that one the other way pulls it in one away now we take a check of the St louis Cardinals lineup
one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now lars Nbar and Boo he’s their team leader in home runs so you know the pitchers on that other side man they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting you know he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop it’s not fluky at all he can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly so watch out when he steps in mason Win batting with one down takes a strike one out base is empty and that one is inside ball one swings and misses that’s strike two but a short stop takes a ball that’s down and in
still just the second batter of the inning and on the mound he’s already thrown 13 pitches they got him working hard out there spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another outside and that is ball four what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that ball

man at first now Alec Burlson he’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching the lefties however give him a little bit more trouble runner on the move pitch outside throw to second save sing he definitely showed off the wheels there
yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play statcast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn’t possible without that sprint speed runner at second here one gone next offering in there for a strike and it’s two and one and that’s too high get ready for some action here good RBI guy at the plate runners in scoring position and a hitter count the other way and foul ball win the runner at second with one away swing and a line drive base hit to left field grounds third headed for the plate he scores and they have the lead to second pulls him off the bag

that was a thing of beauty he may have been a little behind the pitch but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left wilson Contrarus now up to the plate line drive throw not in time at second to double him off great hustle to get back
man he really turned on that one absolutely ripped it towards third but quick cat-like reflexes down there at the hot corner to bring it down

and so far this year this has not been a very good offense well in this day and age if you can’t slug and get on base that OPS has to be at a certain level if you’re going to produce runs give your pitchers an opportunity as they’re facing tough offenses as well

he likes the low ball which traditionally favors pitching but you know hitters today are pretty good at dropping their barrel down so we’ll see how it goes in this one and that’s outside
back to back breaking pitches away you get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you that he doesn’t want to challenge you so I think the confidence level is raised right here slice to right and foul ball this one in the dirt not in time he’s safe and now a man into scoring position well that right there erases the chance at the inning ending double play so good job on the bases to move up on the wild pitch changes the outlook of the inning in a pretty big way man at second and down on strikes now two away
oh you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position and two strikes just put the ball in place and you got a chance very frustrating for him I’m sure see if the next guy can pick him up

that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was and that one is inside really good take especially with two strikes in the air left field he’s there he’s got it and that’ll do it a hit and an error in the inning but they fail to score now to the bottom of the second it’s the Pirates four and the Cardinals won and we’re back now it’s Alexander Canario center fielder alexander Canario mats back to work and that misses ball one

0 and2 now good eye in that spot one ball two strike pirates let’s go fouls it off still one and two breaking ball misses down and away and he grounds one back up the middle loves it on the dive throws from the seat of his pants and they get the out this guy’s anticipation is off the charts don’t see many shorts stops better than that great job to complete the play and end the inning and welcome back to the ballpark out of the third inning now it’s the DH Brendan Donovan donovan hitting lead off in today’s game and he was drafted in the seventh round back in 2018 in the air left field down the line he dives but he can’t make the catch well clearly he was ready to hit right there that’s a ball that a lot of times you’ll see the shortstop or left fielder be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough but right there it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff for base hit win batting for the second time and that’s strike one donovan gets his lead at first with nobody out get up [Applause] keeps the bat going with a foul ball well he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there not sure exactly with the timing sometimes you get a backup breaking ball you’re expecting it to make its move at the end it never does and you’re tied up so up next Alec Burlson doubled his first time [Applause] that clips the corner man at first one away and ball one falling behind two and one

well that’s a pitch that slider from an opposite-handed pitcher that you usually see very well but for some reason he didn’t pick it up and it just kind of got into the strike zone late gave up on it a little bit early gonzalez the next to hit takes ball one some early action out there in the bullpen number 49 appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves this would be his major league debut this to third and a foul ball the one-1 is fouled off this is important and if he can go one two three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team the one two and a swing and a miss and that’s that down in order go the Pirates as they hold on to a 4-1 lead here comes Wilson Contras he’s 0 for one wilson Contrarus and first offering is fouled off you know these Cardinals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one he’s only given up one run but the starter’s pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense coming on his fam to make the play one away it was all over that fast right there i tell you what if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more that’s way back you know sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today newbar in the box with one away as he takes ball one and now two and one after that missed inside he swings and fouls one off you can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball foul ball left side he’ll see another well I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning anything after that a hitter or two is bonus but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line two down base is empty

nolan Aronado that one’s upstairs ball one flying drive and that’s a base hit out into center field so a two out knock keeps the inning alive now batting now it’s the second base Nolan Gorman pirates and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter

now batting Kee Brian Hayes he’s already homered here in this one and when you talk about elite defensive third baseman this guy is at the top of the list outside low and that’s ball one
this guy plays third base like he’s a shortstop and he welcomes the difficult play can throw from so many different angles and makes really tough plays look very easy so what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that elite well Boo one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet does he have good feet is he able to quickly react and when you have good feet you’ve got soft hands and soft hand defenders are able to make tough plays look easy
got him swinging now
so next to the plate for Pittsburgh Jared Triolo out his first time and the first pitch misses for ball one [Applause] swing and a miss and he got him to chase this guy’s got such a good sinker as a hitter you’ve got to look up in the zone if you look down you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt that’s out to center field makes the grab and that’s the inning here’s the catcher pedro Pz struck out looking at his first at bat pirates keller back to work a swing and a miss and that’s strike one he’s been incredibly efficient in this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point stays alive fights it off you’ll see another Next pitch not close up high [Music] swinging a miss that one in the dirt bart collects fires to first in time to get him one away in the strikeout now batting the
now one for St louis victor Scott flyed to left his first time
we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offense aside for just a second Chris it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most the Pirates leading by three and we’re in the top of the fifth bunting and it’s right in front of the plate and it goes just fouled well he gets to balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there’s certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away
so the batting order turns over and next is the designated hitter Brendan Donovan pitch misses there one and0 right through there for a strike two out base is empty so a foul ball makes it one and two and they’ll do it again fouled off and they’ll do it again well they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone i’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again
bands another and that’s three straight strikeouts redbirds down quietly and this is still a 41 ball game and now Alexander Canario fly to right his first time canario and the first pitch misses in the dirt you know these Pirates putting together some really good at bats in this game there’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so I’d say mission accomplished next offering in there for a strike one and two that’s hard hit on the line base hit and they had their first base runner since the second inning
a late jump and I think that was the difference on the play boo it’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat something to improve batting

conor Faleppa [Applause] lifted in the air right center field lays out and makes the play just a great job of concentration there as he leaves the ground to go airborne to make a divy catch
that’s a tough play but he got the job done so the Pirates batting order turns over tommy Fam digs in now bowl for two in this one that pitch clips the outside corner and that’s strike one throw to first canario dives back in safely slider misses outside

andrew McCen [Music] drive and this might be trouble coming home he will score picks himself up at RBI ripped that one down the line and kept it bare and even when you hit it that far out front you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory and that right there was perfect so runner at second two down reynolds now at the plate [Applause] first pitch misses [Applause] hard hit knocks it down gets to first ahead of the runner and they do get the third out of the inning but the Pirates strike on this runscoring double it’s now a 51 ball game so digging in short stop Mason check swing and he went that strike wall win 22 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020 [Music] and that one hit to first and that’s just foul oh gets a piece and stays alive make it four strikeouts in a row just cruising along well clearly just anxious right there and understandably so an 02 count you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out that’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone it’s too late to hold up your swing and first off is fouled off and strike two

yeah that was a tone setter no doubt i mean you can stomach an early solo homer but a three-run shot just doesn’t go down quite as smooth there’s the strike [Applause] tap foul at the plate pirates that one the other way and it goes just fouled
so close to possible extra bases right there just couldn’t keep it fair down the line come on you can do it let’s go swing and a miss struck him out nice job behind the plate there you know Boo you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement and that’s what we saw right there good drop on the brake and got him to swing over the top triolo in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate next offering is in for a strike

and he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year not a lot of hard contact not a lot of hits period [Applause] here’s Nolan Aronado the Red Birds in striking distance but have some work to do
boo it starts with the laid-off man i need a good at bat out of him right here delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 [Music] oh one pirates next offering is fouled back [Music] right through there got him and they get the leadoff hitter in the seven now batting

it’s tough after falling behind a hitter two balls and no strikes but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction pah in the box now as he leaves that one up high next offering is fouled back now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here try to close that gap but you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game and the sweeper is off the plate and the next pitch is way outside [Music] swing and a miss struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone oh tough night at the dish punching out for the third time right there he just hasn’t looked very comfortable at the plate a little unsure of his timing right now not picking up the spin and location of these pitches he’ll have some adjustments to make this one in the air center field canario makes the grab and that is that the Cards leave one they’re down here five to one now

and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year typically at least one in innings so he’ll be tough to get to and the batter now Isaiah Tiner Fa
and remember he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up just missed gray he’s made a name for himself as a very effective reliever but not really what you expect from a bullpen arm these days cuz he’s not out there racking up Ks up the middle and that’s a base hit and a good start to the inning i think it’s the deception ability to change arm angles and slots and give hitters different looks within one at bat they’re never able to get comfortable but when you only see him once a lot of times he has success
back to the top of the order now the left fielder Tommy Fan one on a pitch inside got to be clever too when you don’t have that lights out stuff right
absolutely you got to know what you’re able to do instead of focusing on what that hitter’s strength is stay with your strength and trust that you’ll come out on top nobody out runner at first come on and a big swing and a miss

we just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap he’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots here we go in the zone for a strike that was the sweeper really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count he’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter rolled to short possible two ball the throw to second what a double play that was inning over so it’s no runs on two hits no errors and one left we look ahead to inning number eight it’s the Pirates five and the Cardinals one now here is Brendan Donovan for three brendan Donovan let’s go machinski back to work ball one there let’s go Pirates and there’s a fly ball deep right field and that one is off the wall the throw into second and that’s a leadoff double everything came together for him he hit that ball really well to deep right field right there got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence but you’re always happy with an extra base hit runner in scoring position no outs and stepping in for the Cardinals Mason Win the other way and that’s just foul if you’re going to get something going this is the time to do it you get the leadoff man on everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much come on Pirates man it’s second and that one pulled foul that misses and the count is one and two that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going swings and misses not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double a strikeout and there’s one away that slider wasn’t even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase that’s just a bad approach right there either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn’t resist the temptation but man really expanded right there and didn’t have a chance of making contact with that pitch
