probably didn’t see too much on the open market for him. plus, his stuff is here
Nice, as long as the money isn’t awful great move
7 year by 8.5 million… thank goodness he never misses games but that is a ton of money for a long time
There’s a post in r/hockey that is claiming the AAV is around 8.5 million. This is part of the reason why I wish we moved on from him cause this smells like a contract year performance just to start to regress.
oof, 8.5×7 is rough.
So, we run it back with the exact same defense. I guess we try to get a goalie now?
I personally think GMDW was going to let him walk but with the fact that basically every other upgrade was flying off the shelf I think he felt no choice but to bring him back
This is gonna look like a steal when we win seven straight Stanley Cups
Uhhhhhhhh at least he doesn’t miss games?
How does Fabbs get 4×4.125 and Provy gets 7×8.5
That is… hideous.
7 years, 8.5 AAV. So we’re not getting any free agents tomorrow lol
That term…
I’ll take it. If we lost him and missed out on everyone else we’d have a serious hole in the D.
Hopefully Mateychuk can develop into that 2D. A top 4 for Z Mateychuk Provy Fabbro would be solid if we can’t pick up another defensemen
We live in a world where we are paying Provy more than Florida is paying Marchand
Dobson for 9.5, Ekblad for 6.1, and Andersson not interested. Damn
Once everyone else came off the board he had all the leverage
Jesus Dom what is this all about? If he gets this what does Gavrikov get, $10m a year?
Well that sucks
All I will say is it’s less money than Dobson WITHOUT giving up two 1sts and Voronkov. And we still have $20M in cap space.
Ugh!!!
He was going to get that money either way, might as well be with the CBJ.
They wouldn’t have had anyone else to replace him.
I truly was expecting a 4 year like $32m contract. I don’t think anyone outside of Columbus would sign Provorov to this.
All the options went elsewhere or said no. Dobson to Montreal, Ekblad stayed, Hague went to Nashville, Andersson turned us down, this was a last resort move. Down the road it will be ok.
My issue is, if we need to fix the D, and the D-core is the same, and Elvis is still here, is Jet really enough? At this point, Guddy is third pair, Jake probably as well.
Trust the process. This contract is made knowing the cap is jumping up
Trying to rationalize this in my head, and this is best I can do:
1) must not be getting any major FA defenseman tomorrow since all of them are flying off the shelves
2) part of the price tag is that he doesn’t miss games (which goes with the Coyle move ig)
3) wants to stay competitive for the playoffs and losing Provorov with no replacement would not be good
7 YEARS
TF??
I’m just glad it’s over so we can stop waffling over whether or not to bitch about him staying or going
Not entirely sure the point of locking another LHD up long term. Especially after Mateychuk’s rookie year and spending a first rounder on another LHD. Maybe they try him on his off hand?
He just finished a 6 x 6.75 contract…not sure he would have taken much less than this
Won’t this block all the LHD we just drafted and already have in the pipeline?
This AAV would be much more palatable on a 4-5 year deal, 7 is no bueno, however, we really had no choice other than keeping him
Great. So NOT re-working the defense.
Ew that term..
I feel like Michael Scott being told Toby Flenderson just re-signed to stay for another 7 years
A bit pricey, but this is the same book us old timers have been reading for decades, same book, different year
When people don’t sign in Columbus: “WHY WON’T PEOPLE SIGN HERE”
When people do sign in Columbus: “TOO MUCH FOR TOO LONG”
That said: this isn’t too much but that’s a long time.
Too high, too long. He shoots left and should play on the left. I get Don had trouble finding a right d who would sign there but jeez this means we are running the top 4 d back and that defense gave up a lot of goals. Oh well. See how it goes. Stuck with Sevo and this contract too. That’s a lot. Sorry so negative. I’ll adjust
I’m sorry, but this signing is garbage.
Honestly not a terrible contract. It’s going to look even better in a few years when the cap goes up. He’s a good defensive defensemen who has the durability for playoff hockey. Those of you talking about him living up to this contract, that’s not what he’s being paid for here. He’s being paid for what he’s proven he can do in that past in the NHL. He would’ve either gotten more term or money had he hit free agency. There are so many teams looking to do that same as CBJ in strengthening D to take the next step, and there aren’t that many defensemen available.
Between the Severson contract and this one now we’re not leaving ourselves in good stead on D.
