New NHL CBA Done – Shakeup Coming for Utah Mammoth and More

there’s huge changes coming in the NHL’s new collective bargaining agreement We’re going to go over them today and how they’ll affect the mammoth on today’s Locked on Mammoth [Music] You are a Locked On Mammoth Your daily podcast on the Utah Mammoth part of the Locked On Network your team every day Hello everyone and welcome to Locked on Mammoth Thanks for making us your first listen each and every single day when it comes to the Utah Mammoth hockey team I’m veteran NHL voice Tom Callahan joined by longtime team analyst Robin Leano and together we’re the dynamic duo that’s going to walk you through all these crazy big CBA changes because there is a lot and it does well it affects every team Robin we’re going to talk about the effects and the knock-on effects of the Utah Mammoth and its players Plus we’re going to take a look ahead towards the free agent frenzy And I have it with a question mark because I don’t know how frenzied it’s going to be this year Yeah Right It’s going to be uh it’s going to be interesting to watch what Utah does but in the upcoming you know free agency period and based off what we have learned in the last couple of days over the weekend what Utah did already do through the draft and through couple days before the draft and that trade for JJ Purka Um which was pretty big by the way Uh but that said I mean starting things off though to you know like Tom as you as you put on that first bullet point when it comes to what’s going on at the CBA I mean it’s it’s crazy that I mean I hate it First of all glad they agreed to it this soon right because I would have hated to have a deal with a lock another lockout but we hasn’t happened in over 10 years but still
Well yeah exactly You never know And that’s why it’s nice to get it agreed to And that’s why we’re going to spend a lot of today’s show on the CBA because a lot did change this year And usually Robin there’s some changes A couple of things are maybe tweaked There’s some pretty substantial stuff this year And it starts with going back to an 84 game regular season schedule Now some of you out there going “What do you mean going back to?” Several years ago but not for very long the NHL played 84 regular season games They went from 80 to 82 to 84 and right back to 82 I think they only did it for a couple seasons And there’s a give and take here Robin Number one now everybody’s kind of rolling their eyes Are you kidding me you’re making the regular season longer Well they are making the preeason shorter and they’re limiting veteran players So it’s going from an average of six and a half exhibition games to now it’s four Four is your limit starting in 2026 And veteran players can only play in two of those exhibition games That is a massive change and will affect the Mammoth’s preparation for the regular season
Oh yeah It certainly will And I mean it I’m it in in some ways though it’s really nice because you’re going to be allowing the a lot of these younger prospects to have really more time to kind of prove themselves In some ways they get a little more ice time They might get they might be able to get a know some more some more eyes on them to take a look at that without the obscurity of having a you know a veteran player kind of doing what they do in there Now here’s the other thing too is in order to accommodate the extra two games they are going to start the regular season in late September which is great because they hand the Stanley Cup out approximately in August these days so that should give at least a couple weeks to relax Um I I mean the season goes so long it’s ridiculous I can’t stand how long the season actually takes from a a everything perspective like player fatigue and all of that So at least they’re going to try to space the games out more fewer backto backs They’re gonna start in late September Yeah But I will say this Tom though like to me like I had a feeling this was coming especially if like where we went from a you know like not pretty quickly It was like a like a 30 a 30 team league to a 31 to a 32 uh you know pretty you know pretty darn quickly and then even though there’s no there’s no confirmed reports of expansion coming anytime soon really at least yet um we know there at least is the interest coming from cities like Houston from Atlanta Phoenix is trying to get another team um so at some point when you get to so many more teams like it’s hard to be able to see is every single NHL team if you have a limited number of game names in the season
And Robin I’m going to round out that rumor list of cities Atlanta is going to be the next one because they’re they are going to they’ve approved the site They’re going to build it Um but Austin Texas Houston Texas and New Orleans is now on that list And vaguely Indiana which to me is probably Indianapolis because where else are you going to put it um so those are the ones that are out there We can get into that that that’s a later summer topic We’ll get into that later Um but there’s a lot going on and the NHL will expand You bet your hat on that one They will absolutely expand if the money is there By the way $2 billion rumored to be the fee Um Yeah So dig deep Robin and I are collecting change We are going to become NHL owners one day Um so if you want to donate your pennies it should only take us 2,000 years Um playoff salary cap Robin this is another big one I want to get to right before our first break because this playoff salary cap uh a lot of people have complained about it Now they haven’t really closed the LTIR loophole but they’ve made it more difficult And so this is like famous examples like you stash a guy like Nikita Cuchov if you’re the Tampa Bay Lightning on long-term injured reserve all year He probably could have come back in February but they didn’t activate him until the playoffs and he jumps back in Makes a huge difference And they would have been Robin Tampa Bay like $9 million over the cap but because it’s playoffs it didn’t matter anymore Now it’s going to matter because teams must be whatever roster they ice and this is the the semantics of it Whatever roster you dress for that night has cap compliant
Yeah So there could be um you know a scenario where they just scratch a player who um in one in one night and it and it’s that’s their way of circumventing and that’s and that’s why the loophole wasn’t fully closed because there’s still ways that these teams can do it Um but it did it is making it harder I think for especially for a team like Vegas to be able to do it because I think Vegas has like so many like high dollar team uh players So I’m going to I’m going to be curious to see how they manage that Now
how much more likely too does it make let’s say so since you gave Vegas as the example Jack Eel okay high dollar player if he’s a little banged up if he’s not at 100% Vegas has a decision now Do you take his money out of the lineup and insert other players and go with that direction or do you try to keep your banged up superstar in the lineup and hope he can produce through it that’s going to be a big question that some teams are going to have to face because let’s face it if you can get nine or 10 million in relief you could change your lineup drastically It’s going to be interesting to follow and see how all that happens because it’s I’m glad that at least they’re putting that in place though right at least it’s a step forward because again now you’re no longer going to be going to be able to have
a you know like like and going you know continuing with the Vegas the you know Vegas theme They’re not going to be able to dress everybody and just say hey you’re going to you know all you know all all the high dollar players are going to be dressing because all of a sudden it caps at 95 million but their dressed players are like hundred million dollars like well you’re now getting a penalty because you can’t uh because you can’t be over
And and it’s nice that it’s at least for the playoffs Um you can juggle salary around You can move players in and out of the lineup which is going to result in a a black aces that is not just minor league players and vets You’re going to have some really good black aces that are hanging out but can’t play because of what they make So if you want to give Mitch Mner $15 million you can But just know there’s repercussions It will be I like I do like that one But what we’re going to do Tom like why don’t we take a quick break before we address the rest of these point the rest of these points because there is still some really interesting points that uh that are there in the some of the changes in the CBA Once again I think it’s going to be beginning in the season of 2026 through 2030 So we’ll get to that right after this And today’s show is brought to you in part by FanDuel Summer sports are in full swing And whether you’re all about baseball under the lights golf on the green or high stakes soccer action FanDuel is the best way to make every game even more exciting I mean you’re already following the action so why not make it a little more thrilling with FanDuel you can get in on the game while your friends are getting sunburned on the beach It’s easy to use FanDuel’s fast to pay out and it makes even regular season games feel like mustwatch events Whether I’m placing a same game parlay or watching a bet right into the ninth inning FanDuel makes it feel like I’m a part of the action And it keeps every game exciting right through to the end So are you new to FanDuel well new customers can bet just $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins Open the FanDuel app today or visit fanduel.com to get started Tom Callahan Robin Leano here with you locked on a mammoth Please subscribe if you haven’t already Also hit that thumbs up button for us on the YouTube side We appreciate that Helps us with the algorithm and it also helps you find more great hockey content just like this We’re going to be with you every single day this week here as we’ve got a lot going on heading into free agency But today’s show we’re focusing on the CBA Um Robin as you mentioned there are some big uh points still to go over including shorter contract term limits Shorter contract term That’s really interesting because for the last I want to say like you know the last section of the of the CVA what the limits were u they were put in place because previously it was like what 10 12 even so many years right it was in absolutely insane with at some point a CBA a new CBA would put in place where the signing limits contract limits would be eight years for a resigning So like if you if you had a if you had someone who was already uh on their team and you’re resigning them to an 8-year extension seven years if you’re signing a free agent Now Tom that has been shortened by one year each of those So now it’s 7 years for a resigning period and 6 years to sign a free agent It’s interesting because even though it’s only a year there’s a lot of talk about how especially for the the players and there’s a little bit of a trend going on right now uh with some of the bigger name bigger money there for players looking for shorter contracts So they want to kind of get a short contract and then get a cashin contract Um and it’s interesting that a lot of people feel like what this is going to do now that it’s six years if you change teams seven years if you stay with your team it’s probably going to drive salaries up So players are going to love it in the short term
Um because you can’t stretch that value out And the other thing Robin is you mentioned it uh earlier I don’t know if it was on the show or in our little chat before we got going here but the signing bonuses are now going to be limited at 60% of salaries per year And the year-to-year variance is dropping from 25 to 20% So that means you can’t have as some contracts used to be very severely frontloaded I’m just going to exaggerate some terms here $20 million in the first year $15 million in the second year and then the last eight years of the deal were a million dollars a piece You can’t do that anymore
Yeah And it it’s interesting because then they then you started seeing the reverse right where it’d be like oh you’d only get paid like a million this first year and all of a sudden by your last contract you’re getting paid like $12 million you know on those deferred salary Now you’re not getting that either right you can’t backload the contract because you’re getting a lot more even uh you’re lot being a lot more even keel on how you spread out these average annual values
And that was the thing for GMs You had to figure out okay well some teams could take a higher cap hit with a lower cash outlay So a contract for a player might have been a 7 million AAV but the last two years were only a million cash If you’re not a big spender team and you need to get to the floor or a little over that’s a great contract for you Flip side is if you’re a team that’s got cash and you have a low AAV but the back end was loaded up you could take the heavy part of that contract no problem pay the player but you have a lower AAV So that a lot of that’s going to go away now So um but you know they’re going to get creative shall we say i just am very
managers are always very creative Um
I mean performance bonuses will still be there I mean we I mean every every team has performances performance bonuses in each team and that’s probably what how they end up getting put into place because but as long as as long as it still evens out right it’s like “Oh we’ll make it easy per easy easy performance bonus for you towards the end there.” Like you know you get you play 10 games Oh your performance bonus Oh we’ll get we we’ll throw an extra 2 million in there for you It’s like it’s they’ll figure out a way
Yeah No they will They’ll they’ll get creative Uh league minimums going to rise from 775 to 1 million That’s going to take a couple of years Uh league revenue is going to stay at 50/50 on the split Uh let’s talk about ebugs Robin emergency backup goalender is what Ebug stands for Love Ebugs Uh you know previously usually they’d be uh they would just have like some like random like team staff or whatever kind of on call in the arena u and they would dress for either team right so now what we’re getting is teams are going to organizations are going to have fulltime emergency backup goalies So these are that like they like that’s going to essentially going to be their title right that’s like it’s going to be they’re going to be a full-time emergency backup goalie Um I mean I’m liking this cuz maybe at this point now you know oh Ebugs come in We’re going to have Utah Mammoth Ebug Tom Cahan going to make it on his way through There you go I’m slowly changing my equipment over to team colors so it’ll be good Um I’m ready I’m actually I’m not ready I am a long way from being ready
but that would be fun I would love it Um you know
let’s make it happen Let’s do it Let’s do it I’ll get out there I don’t I’m not scared Believe me I’ve been hit in the head so many times with pucks It just whatever It doesn’t bother me Um you know what i’m I don’t know how I feel about this as being having to be a full-time role because it really doesn’t happen that much Are you keeping a player from developing somewhere else or playing somewhere else it’s an interest it’s an interesting thought process Tom And it’s to me I think the biggest thing is like uh because there was a special it was a little special thing about having like your what was it like your Scott Foster your David Aras like oh you have an accountant by day Ebug by night or your Zambon or Zamboni driver all of a sudden dressing for uh for your team Like it’s honestly like I love those stories That sounds like Batman the goalending version No it they’re great stories Great stories Everybody Everybody still talks about David Harris That was 2020 5 years ago We’re still talking about it because it was awesome Um yeah absolutely I agree with you Um I don’t know I I don’t think it’s as big a problem that it needed to be covered in the CBA Speaking of which Robin the CBA is only four years long now So both sides agreed that shorter is better And from the players standpoint one of the points that they made was some players would literally play under one collecting collective bargaining agreement in their entire careers and maybe they would miss out on some of the advantages and changes
Yeah Yeah So having it shorter I mean I think a lot of I think the you know the NHLP PA definitely that goes in their favor because as you said it allows those players to be able to allow add add that extra negotiating period So some players get the opportunity to negotiate a new one because it’s been a long time It really has been a long time since we had a full new inplay CBA Um I mean that was that that’s been put in place I’m trying to remember the last time it was resign you know re-uped It’s been a it’s been a been a pretty heavy minute Uh but one that I do want to mention Tom it’s really interesting and I want to get your thought processes on that your thoughts on this one Um I’m looking at a at a list rundown put on by NHL Network and one that to me I’m wondering like how what what this is going to look like and it’s teams cannot mandate player dress code when arriving or departing games So and to put people in perspective by the way really quick is for the most time like you would you would always see players arriving in suits right all these players would arrive in suits some pretty awesome suits right so be like some incredible designs that really showed off their flare and do whatever but no matter what it was a suit Um now the dress codes away so they will note that they can’t enforce hey you have to wear a suit coming into into a game I want to hear your thought process Tom What you’re thinking Tom when when it comes to this new It’s the rise of the fit checks You know that’s the popular trend on social media the fit checks Um I I mean hockeyy’s always been a suit sport since I’ve been in it Uh and that’s just what the dress code has been When in doubt wear a suit But you’re right I mean some players did express their creativity A lot of the European players wore suits with shorts especially in the playoffs which I don’t understand Um that’s just weird to me but okay you guys go Um Robin it’s going to allow players to express themselves through their dress a little more creatively I guess like we kind of see with NBA and NFL players Um you’re still going to see a lot of suits but you’re going to see some other crazy stuff out there I expect Austin Matthews uh to work something up that’s going to be pretty cool uh you’ll see some other guys out there really kind of learning to express themselves But yeah it’s I mean they’re just following the lead of other sports at this point And
what I what I love Tom and it’s it’s an interesting thing and we’re you know it’s it’s it’s in a different world because I I’ll say because women’s sports is very very different when it comes to how they how you know how they you know do their presentation But I see what women’s hockey does in both the collegiate level as well as in the PWHL when they show their you know their fit checks coming in and they’re all so unique and it’s just like to me I love it I love seeing the I love seeing unique it really showcases their personality out there and not that they couldn’t with the suits because again as we kind of mentioned you you could but but creativity was still stifled a little bit you So you got anybody able to see that um there will be some who literally probably just don’t really care and they might just uh like they they there are some super casual players out there who kind of just want to show up wearing whatever like they’re not huge on style but then you’ll see other players who again who will go all out
Yes I I don’t mind it I’m kind of looking forward to seeing what guys come up with but um it’s never been a big deal to me I mean if it were me I’d probably still show up wearing a suit but who knows
i still love like I said I still like I I still always love I loved seeing the suit fit check videos of saying walking into the tunnels Like those are always really cool I love seeing those But it’ll be different this time around when when the new CBA starts But hey I’m I’m looking forward to seeing it seeing the difference
Yes Me too Me too Uh Robin anything else you want to cover about the CBA no I think I think I think that covers the majority of the changes If you still have questions for us please drop them in the comments or reach out to us on social media We are happy to talk about what’s going on with the CBA here uh which by the way is done a whole year ahead of time which is also awesome So uh they’re going to finish out the the year that’s left on the current one and then the new one goes into effect So that’s why everything takes effect in 2627 not for this upcoming season All right Robin and I are back to talk Will it be a free agent frenzy for the Utah Mammoth or are they going to be a little more chill well Bill Armstrong set his expectations We’re going to talk about that next back here on Locked on Mammoth Tom Callahan Robin Leono here with you Please tell your friends about the show if you like what you’re hearing what you’re seeing We appreciate your support and the more the merrier as we work our way through what’s going to be a really impressive week here because we just got out of the draft We broke that down in a couple of our previous videos So go ahead and watch those after you get done with this one And then Robin looking ahead to free agency Uh they always say free agent frenzy I don’t know if it’s going to be a frenzy this year Uh I feel like especially for the Mammoth because Marner’s off the table for Utah Um we know a couple of guys are now staying like Tavvaris agreed and I still cannot get over how cheap he is staying in Toronto That’s mind-blowing to me Florida
resigned Dan Bennett
and kind of looks like they’re on track to maybe pull off what I didn’t think was possible and keep everybody although we’ll see Um but I don’t know if it’s going to be as crazy or flip side of that coin because the market has been compressed even more It’s going to be absolutely nuts on day one just to get the few scraps that are out there It’s interesting because like in I always talk about free agency the free agency free agent frenzy pre-COVID and postco Postco I feel like I h it hasn’t been as insane right I remember the pre-COVID years in which like like I would get up every morning you know watch the countdown to the free agency free agent frenzy on NHL network and then at would be like open at 9:00 my time I’m living in the Pacific time zone and and at 9:00 it like instantly oh we have a signing It’s a it’s a big signing too And I’m like this is going to be fun to watch And I did that every single year for quite a while And it was it was fun It was fun But we’re not getting that anymore Um because things kind of get I mean we hear about these negotiations a lot more on social media Social like sometimes we’ll find out the night before we even though technically can’t yet Um there’s a lot of loopholes that still put in place there Um and then sometimes it’s just a maybe just a lull There’s like oh wait there all of a sudden it gets nuts and it’s not as like blockbuster So it just kind of gets slipped under the rug like oh wait this happened Yeah And we’ve heard I think Robin through through Bill Armstrong’s expectations that they weren’t throwing crazy money around anyway And again that’s partially I think there’s an eye on that Logan Culie extension and some other guys going to get paid here but that doesn’t mean Utah’s out on making stuff happen No it doesn’t mean that they uh that they are but I think Bill Armstrong is what he’s paying attention to is what works into the system what works into the timeline Um that’s not going to be too crazy on the money because again you talked about the looking for you know getting ready for his extension I he’s got a year left on his deal right now Um so where is he going to be is he going to be as we talked about north of that $8 million a year maybe north of 8.5 Um and but you also got to resign Jack McBain right he’s still in in the negotiating period At the time of uh recording this we don’t know any updates on negotiation on where they’re going to be at for there but you know fingers crossed that it’s still there So it’s going to be probably within that close to be maybe close to where he’s at right now around that $3 million range maybe a little bit more So it’s going to be like all right you have to pay attention to where they’re at out especially Tom and I want to point this out too when you give a guy like JJ Purka 7 million over $7 million a year for five years Um I mean that still does take a chunk out of what Utah is going to be able to do Um because that that that does limit a little bit but that was their big that was their big deal That was their splash right so we’re not going to see anything major on the at least on Utah side
Now let me let me say this because the price that Utah was asking for the Islanders to get back to number four reportedly involved Matthew Barzal and that’s why that trade never happened The Islanders didn’t want to trade him
So and Utah wouldn’t come off their asking price which is fine Utah makes their pick Now that said Barzal is $9.5 million So if there is a salary range they feel comfortable with clearly they would have been okay with acquiring that and there were several years left on that deal I think Robin that gives us an idea of the upper limit or at least the tolerable limit of what they could spend maybe in total or maybe on a a player But that is indicative they’re comfortable to me spending 9 and a half for the right player Not 15 not 11 He’s he’s given both of those figures multiple times We’re not spending 11 We’re not spending 15 but maybe nine and a half maybe 10 And I think that’s really is the upper limit right i think 9 and a half 10 is the true upper limit Like to me it wouldn’t be surprised if you see another deal coming in for around six seven maybe $8 million a year And that’s that’s a comfortable risk tolerance I think Um
yeah especially too if it’s like a like a moderate term right if we’re talking a three four year deal Yeah Utah can easily use that Yeah So that’s kind of setting the expectations here Is there anything you want to add Robin as far as getting our uh our listeners and our viewers ready for this potential frenzy i mean just I mean the only thing I’ll say is just like just have fun with it Even though like maybe I’m downplaying that fact that the frenzy is different from pre from old you know the uh precoid years to where it is now like you still have fun with it Maybe you are a diehard like me that still wakes up at 9 in the morning uh to uh to tune on NHL network and see where uh where players go at 9:0001 because they you still might get one of those right you still make a a uh a a little news news drop like that but I say have fun with it Absolutely And it’s it’s cool when the big stuff does go down and at least one or two during the day are going to make you go “Wow I didn’t see that coming.” So I remember the days where I had on Twitter like in addition to watching on on uh and this is my last my last thought here in addition to watching on uh on NHL Network I would go on Tweet Deck right and I had a list put together what I had
dick
right i had a I had a list put together of like pure LeBron like Craig Custance and all and Bob McKenzie um and you know a lot of the NHL insiders who would just inst who would be oh um this player to here this player to here and like and it’s like reports it’s $7 million at uh seven years and it’d be all over the place right um and I would retweet everything and I watching especially looking at the teams right at the time when I was doing all this crazy I would look at mainly uh they always did the short terms you know the three the threeletter short terms I would always watch either ARRI you know Arizona or SJS for San Jose I’d be like all right who who’s who’s coming where who’s going where and between those two I was on top of everything or anything Ariana Grande did because she was going by Ari So um but no seriously I miss Tweet Deck for that I I do I understand because that used to be the best way to do it to to me Twitter was always a news aggregator and Tweet Deck was the way to set up your columns and your search terms I miss that too I mean I I mean when I was on Tweet Dick I was able to uh send separate tweets from like uh from my personal from Fifer howling and from locked on coyotes but without having to make it look like I mean I could have been the exact same tweet across all three accounts or it could have been easy new tweets across all three accounts but within like 5 seconds
Amazing
Like
it was so easy to just put everything together into one I I mean it still exists It’s just now XP pro and you have to pay for
you got to pay for it I know it just h everything’s about money So so is so is July one It’s all about money So hey I guess it fits right in
It’s Christmas in July

  1. I’d like Utah to sign or trade for a goalie equal or better to Vej. As well as another forward to fill out the bottom 6, doesn’t have to be a superstar but someone better than Liam Obrien. Maybe that can be But. And I know we have Ingram but you never know if you’ll get a full season from him, god bless him but we need someone that is in a better place to consistently compete.

  2. What are the odds of trading Vancouver for Quinn Hughes? Or would you rather sign Aaron Ekblad, Ehlers, or Boeser? I'm used to MLB where there is no salary cap and teams are more careless about trades lol

  3. Keep the dress code! That is part of what gives Hockey their edge over the other professional sports .. Suits are a MUST ..
