No early deal for Myles Turner with Indiana Pacers? Free agency begins, Pacers FA rumors
day one of free agency in the books and the Pacers all is quiet No Miles Turner nothing else And yet a lot of stuff that actually does matter to them and some reporting on stuff they’re considering What does it mean we’ll talk about it all today on the Locked On Pacers podcast You are Locked on Pacers your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day
What’s up everybody happy Tuesday and welcome in to another edition of the Locked On Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always My name’s Tony East I cover the team for Forbes and today free agency day one has kind of come and gone It’s July 1st Small signings two ways minimums they can happen now Woo the doozy is happening Deals are being reported The league is changing The Atlanta Hawks are awesome And the Pacers have done nothing Not a zilch Miles Turner still a free agent Other stuff happened that does matter quite a bit to the Pacers There’s been some reporting connecting the Pacers to various things What’s going on i’ll try to I’ll try to theorize on all of it today Man oh man was this an interesting start to free agency Miles Turner though the story everybody wondering the same question Why has this not happened yet for the Pacers and Miles Turner the context that I think is needed to start this is let’s talk about every other good unrestricted free agent this summer LeBron James Harden Kyrie Julius Randle Fred Van Vleet Nas Reed uh Keon Ellis I guess John Collins is kind of good Um that all of them basically have already signed Bobby Poris Gary Trent uh have all already signed right miles Turner is the only and by far the best uh not the only he is by far the best unrestricted free agent who has not resigned or signed with any team yet right all the other starter level players Quinton Grimes Kaminga Giddy they’re restricted Eightton’s not a free agent yet He has to clear waiverss Cam Thomas is restricted Malik Beasley is obviously uh in a different situation and everyone else depending what you think of like Duncan Robinson and Chris Paul is a bench player right miles Turner by far the best available player and the way for agency goes is usually the good players go and then teams reassess and blah blah blah So it is obviously everybody’s wondering what’s going on Why does this not happen now before we talk about theories or talk about does this actually matter let me start with this Um I don’t I don’t know right like I don’t know I don’t know if this is cause for concern I don’t know if this is nothing Not every player signs right away immediately every single year Last year Seakum got done like first of every player Um Obi Toppin happened right before free agency but other stuff happened a little late right you just never know what the timing can be like with this stuff Um however obviously all the other teams have done things You wonder though could it be negotiations you know there’s been some reporting on this I still maintain that mostly I think the people that I have talked to expect Turner to resign with the Pacers but nothing has happened yet right and so one thing these are all things that could be factors but I don’t know if they’re factors right for example um the center market so far Nas Reed at 25 million Daniel Gaffford at 20 million you know is it actually something where Turner can get what he thought he could get given the way the market has kind of gone julius Randall you know a multi-time all-star got three for 100 right with a player option at the end you know that probably suggests Turner can’t get that high Nasar Reed got 25 million a year though with a player option Like is he somewhere between it’s hard to say with with the way the big market’s going Brook Lopez got not very much right luke Cornet got four for 40 You know he’s certainly in between all these players in some way So it could obviously be negotiating seeing how the markets kind of settled for this year there was 10% growth The other thing that happened right before free agency started is reporting from multiple people a memo from the league went out projecting that the salary cap growth for the season after the one that’s currently going on because they set the cap for 202526 and it did grow 10% But it projected only 7% growth for the following season which is shocking I think most people up to that moment thought the cap would grow 10% in 2026 27 and there was kind of at least in my head in a lot of cappy brainy people’s heads you know the notion that if the cap is growing more than player salaries you’re a little le there’s less risk involved in deals whereas the other way around things get a very small amount but a little bit tighter every year if that’s not the case did anybody have to reassess what they were doing like that is a theory that I talked about with somebody however lots of players made deals happen anyway right so like that that doesn’t really make a ton of sense to me that that would be a reason Although it’s not nothing right it obviously matters a great deal for a Pacers team that is competing with for winning that is fighting the tax that every dollar counts that they would go “Oh what are we really willing to offer what makes the most sense here?” So here’s what I would say first It doesn’t actually matter that if this happens right away It does not matter unless this is like a negotiation going sour which I don’t know that and I honestly don’t think that’s the case It doesn’t matter If he signs on July 2nd July 3rd it doesn’t matter right it’s it’s just how it goes because none of the Pacers other things that they look likely to do in free agency seem like things that would happen fast right trades usually happen after signings because teams prefer to get stuff without trading away stuff So that the the chronological order of events suggests anything the Pacers would do beyond Turner A lot of minimum stuff a lot of smaller stuff would happen later anyway It’s not like they’re missing out on something or or you know the boats are leaving without them So it doesn’t actually matter especially because this is by far the most important thing for their offseason Everything else is kind of secondary that they have to figure out later If they get this right or they get this to a place they like it great That’s a win-win Um lots of deals happen with player options Does Miles Turner want a player option i don’t know what the reasoning would be It doesn’t actually matter to me uh if I’m the Pacers that much when it happens so long as it actually does get done because I know a lot of people say Miles Turner is not what the market says he should be worth which the market dictates what players are worth not the fan opinion If you don’t think Miles Turner is as good as other centers making that kind of money okay I guess that’s a little different But um clearly they’d rather have a good center than a much much much worse center And losing him for nothing would be a tough situation And Miles Turner as we’ll get to later talking about other deals around the league can’t same stuff I’ve said the whole time can’t make as much anywhere else basically as he could with the Pacers Sans signing trades which are also tricky to put together I suppose in my brain the odds of a signing trade went up like 1 to 5% by the fact that this didn’t happen on day one but I don’t even know that I necessarily believe that I still think given the the market dynamics of this free agency given everything that’s been reported and everything that I’ve kind of seen and heard leading up to this that Turner will resign with the Pacers at some point but it has not happened yet for some reason or another And that is where the Pacers stand at the at the end of free agency day one the exact same place they stood after day zero And yet not really because there was stuff that happened elsewhere around the league that I think primarily helps them Um we could talk about why I think that as we talk about it but an interesting start and I don’t necessarily know that there’s a reason this would or would not happen Some reporting albeit not from any of like the hugest grouping of reporters about that expectation that Turner will still resign And I’ll read when we get to the rumor section a lot of the stuff about this that again is from the bigger people that said “Hey um yeah so could the Pacers and Miles Turner actually be a part?” Yeah that’s po I guess that’s possible that they went into negotiations and they didn’t agree to start but I have a feeling they will find common ground just given how uh this is set up given what the Pacers roster is given where Turner’s at in his career that just makes so much sense Unless something major is happening or someone’s desires have drastically changed that makes by far the most sense But the Pacers made their desires very clear They said Miles Turner is their number one priority Rick Carile said that on the record on the radio Um I still expect that this will get done but it has not yet And I don’t I don’t have a good reason for you why Nothing really changed outside of the salary cap projections for a year later Um obviously Hallebertton’s injury changed things for the Pacers but I don’t think that changed anything for me on what Turner should be worth to them So look obviously the answer is we’ll see tomorrow If nothing happens I will not talk about this anymore I will just say “Yep we’ll see.” Uh but that is day one of Pacers free for agent C4 Miles Turner And yet it was not a nothing day And I will explain why the odds of Turner might actually have gone up staying with the Pacers despite him not signing the very first day Before we talk about any of that let’s talk about FanDuel summer sports They’re here They’re in full swing Whether you’re all about baseball under the lights golf on the green or high stakes regime nailed their front office Obviously their trade with the Pelicans was a swindling but I think they nailed the day in terms of the asset price given up given the players that they got I already thought the Hawks were going to be good They had two first round picks Jaylen Johnson’s going to be back Uh now it’s free agency they’ve had I mean everybody’s going to pick the Hawks but they look to to be good not maybe to win anything but they’re going to be awesome I think And they have a team that makes sense around Trey Young Locked on Hawks Brad Roland will have more The Hawks early in free agency were a part of something that happened that I mentioned very briefly when talking about Miles Turner and that is they made a three-team trade with the Celtics and the Nets Chris Porzingis to Atlanta Terrence Man and his money into the Nets cap space Um and the Celtics get George Nyang I believe you know a very financially focused trade for the Celtics and yet a lot of money got dumped into Brooklyn’s cap space That day I said I tweeted “Oh some of the space that could in theory be elsewhere for Miles Turner is shrinking right the Nets still had some space after that day but a lot has happened since.” And a lot happened on day one of free agency that might have actually again boosted the chance of Miles Turner’s return despite nothing actually happening One of the teams and the team that most people were like “Oh what’s going to happen with them when it comes to cap space and you know having enough money to potentially lure a bigname player away was the Nets They had a ton of space even after drafting five guys in the first round They traded Cam Johnson for Michael Porter Jr that sucked up a ton of their space Uh they did lose D’Angelo Russell but their moves have them now somewhere between like the high teens low 20s in space depending on how they use some cap holds or what contracts and the structures that actually get signed They did agree to deals with uh Dron Sharp and Zyra Williams Although those their capold situation means they’ll probably get slashed forever I don’t want to get too in the weeds on this The Nets chewed up a lot of their cap space Not quite all of it but they’re pretty close to the floor They have Nick Claxton They don’t seem like a Turner team They seem like a take in contracts team but they already have chewed up a lot of their space almost all of it Detroit was a team rumored to potentially be interested in Miles Turner Would they use cap space to do it they signed Caris Levert 2 years 29 million I believe was the rumored number which is an interesting deal because it could be the mid-level exception if the Pistons decide to stay over the cap or it could fit into cap space if they go under but if it fits into cap space they won’t have enough for Miles Turner Um so take them out of the straight up poach Miles Turner from the Pacers sweep stakes to the extent that that’s even a sweep stakes The Atlanta Hawks were very frequently mentioned uh and by very frequently made a few times mentioned as a team that could pursue Miles Turner They obviously already got Porzingis That’s clue one that they would be out on that They have a Kongu also They had a huge trade exception from the Dejonte Murray trade that people wondered huh could Miles Turner go into that well they used it on Eel Alexander Walker and perhaps Luke Canard also would fit into that I’m not sure I can’t believe I’m going to say Luke Canard’s name multiple times in this podcast We’ll get to more on that later And so that filled up If that’s gone there’s very few spending power teams left The Memphis Grizzlies people wondered if they’d be a cap space team And I thought the whole time that they would use it for Triple J And everybody thought that That’s not a unique thought or a unique reporting And that’s exactly what happened It was the first thing announced after 6 p.m The Grizzlies plan to renegotiate and extend Jiren Jackson Jr.’s contract up to his maximum $240 million for the Indie Native Bada bing bada boom They’ll probably have to wave up and stretch call Anthony or find a dumping spot for him And there they all go That was the biggest trade exception that was like actually feasibly usable and all the cap space gone like that with those agreements The Nets still technically could hover and get down to this I think right now Yosi has their max cap space projection at 24.7 million but everything else is basically gone The the Dejonte Murray trade exception is down to $10.9 million The Celtics big trade exception is functionally unusable for them given their apron concerns Uh and every other exception or cap space reality in the NBA besides the Nets is below 20 million which is not enough for Miles Turner given the center market And so the best place for him to get the money that he would want is the Pacers which was the case already and now is even more the case Right so any any potential foolery of leverage is gone The Pacers also again same situation do not have their own leverage of another center that they could acquire which is why I want I think this comes out in the wash and why I expected potentially negotiations right uh you know Nazare they couldn’t afford but he was gone Daniel Gaffford obviously sign that extension they couldn’t afforded him clearly given what his price is and everybody else is basically a backup like Brook Lopez is going to now be a backup of Vitra Zubach for the Clippers uh of the good centers so they can’t get a player close to as good as Miles Turner Check out the list of available free agent centers even now Like Al Horford’s the best guy left So it has the dynamics have worked I think more in the Pacers favor ever so slightly because there was more potential teams than there are potential centers this year U not that that’s a huge deal but there it’s out of spots So if Miles Turner’s truly heart of hearts is I never want to be on the Pacers again I do not want to be on their team which I’m making that up But if that’s the that’s the way he’s not on the team then they then it the only solution that would make sense is a sign and trade because there’s no way for him to make enough money that makes sense to sign somewhere else right and it’s not a situation where you can even squint a little bit and say well yeah maybe he would take less this year like the non tax mid-level somewhere else but then he could make up for what he’s losing from the Pacers in future years Like that that also doesn’t work because his nonbird rights wouldn’t be enough and any deal that gets him a two-year deal he’d be losing a ton of year-over-year value from what that would be with the Pacers if they use Full Bird right so even on a cheaper than I expect deal Miles Turner would make way more with the Pacers than elsewhere He fits well He’d have a role he likes He talked so much recently about growing up in India how much it’s been a part of his life for the 10 years He obviously was very celebratory during their playoffs run I mean I could go on and on Everybody expects that it will still happen even though it hasn’t But that is all the stuff that happened in free agency that made me go “Oh there there goes not even a Turner destination.” I don’t even call these teams destinations Detroit and Atlanta were technically reported Um they they still seemed very unlikely to me Uh but places where money was like significant sums of money were available they’re gone Nikail Alexander Walker got it Jiren Jackson Jr got it Michael Porter Jr Well already had it but got it traded Um and whatever happens in Detroit sounds like they might be in on Malik Monk is some reporting Now if Carol’s in there I mean that’s a signing trade that probably be they’d probably stay over the cap I don’t know I don’t want to get too geeky on this So that is why I think despite Miles Turner not signing the odds of him being retained by the Pacers still possibly went up because the options are just not there at all The maneuverability is not there at all So the odds of a signing trade possibly went up but not very much And again I’m not reporting that or even speculating that will happen It’s just a thing But I think that the market dynamics and the history of the two parties suggests that that’s where it’ll end up It’s just the where and the when and the how and all and all that And of course you know right here on Lockdown Pacers we’ll break it all down the second it happens Nothing else happened No Isaiah Jackson no Thomas Bryant no uh James Johnson no Cam Jones nothing Uh however no minimum point guard if they need a vet Now again like I said at the top officially 2As can be signed Like if Tayen Peter’s getting a 2A they could do that Now minimums can be signed James Wiseman got signed during the moratorum last year So depending on what their free agency looks like you could see signings soon but I like real signings But outside of that uh I would expect quietness until Turner is done Rumors here they come A lot of them related to Turner Some related to some other guys one I who’s external that I’ve never talked about and one that’s internal that I’ve like briefly mentioned but not enough We’ll talk about all that to close out today’s day one free for agency lockdown pacers back here on lockdown pacers Thanks for making sure your first listen today and every single day Your second listen lockdown Suns because we’re about to talk about a Suns player and they’ve had a kind of interesting and unique offseason to me They’ve got a lot of good players in the draft Can they do anything of actual value in free agency we will see All right let’s turn to the rumor mill I haven’t done this at all I wondered if I’d even have to uh but I do want to now because of some stuff that came out uh in various places across the internet about the Pacers potential interests uh leading up to and or on the day of free agency Okay number one comes from Kelly Eco This one’s already dead but I’m gonna you’ll see why I’m saying it in a second He reported in the Athletic New York Times Luke Canard is expected to receive interest from a host of playoff teams including the Rockets Pistons Pacers Magic Nuggets Clippers and Knicks There’s the Pacers in there He has already now ironically given that this team was on the list there agreed to deal a deal with the Hawks Um so that’s sounds like where he’s headed but he’s kind of a quasi ball handler shooter type They lost ball handling and shooting without Tyrese Hallebertton Perhaps that’s the type of player they’d won at guard Uh if they do sign a guard right i did mention a potential point guard being an addition the Pacers would make but like all the guards that I like squinted and said “Oh that’d be a good fit.” In theory they on the Pacers they signed like big deals Like Tyus Jones got 7 million Luke Canard’s getting 11 million I wondered with somebody that I talked to about a lot of this stuff if Luke Canard would be a minimum player this this free agency Seems like every team he goes to he plays less than I think he should And that made me wonder if he’d get less Uh no $11 million Um so that was thing one And just keep in mind we I I don’t know that if I know if that’s true or not but keep in mind with this stuff like it does see signal to you what the Pacers are thinking about or what their budget range could be Uh Jake Fischer reported this was a couple not a couple weeks ago but within the last 10 days U you’ll see why I I mentioned that He said quote “I’ve also heard that Phoenix has done some background work on Chris Tuts Porzingis with Boston being known to exploring his trade options there Sources say you can likewise add Phoenix to the list of teams that have been hoping to elbow its way into Miles Turner’s free agency this summer.” Uh the Steinline wrote earlier oops I scrolled wrote earlier this week about teams such as Detroit and Atlanta that cover Turner but realistically concede that the longtime Pacers center is highly likely to resign with Indiana this summer after helping them reach the NBA Finals Again that last part is the part that makes the most sense Atlanta and Detroit now have less options I have no idea how Phoenix could trade for Miles Turner because of their salary matching concerns They’d have to send out more money than they take in signing trades I don’t even think they can receive players in signing trades since they’re over the second apron Um they they’d have to buy out Bradley Bill to get under it Even then they couldn’t sign Turner hardly anything So that doesn’t really pass the smell test as something the Suns could actually do But hey look another Turner team Uh even though the important part of that one is really the ending part of Turner potentially returning Okay Uh another Mark Stein Jake Fischer Then closer to free agency he said the same thing No tangible expectation Miles Turner would leave That’s kind of how I have been saying it Now let’s talk about two players that I haven’t talked about as much One with the Pacers right now one on a different team and a team that I have mentioned already in this segment This one came out today in hoops hype from the great Michael Scott one of the best there is He’s just awesome Uh he said quote Nicks Pacers Lakers are three teams that this is not a quote now uh Nick Knicks Pacers Lakers three teams potentially interested in Nick Richards the Suns center I actually tweeted about Nick Richards during the draft because after the Suns traded for him last year they traded for Mark Williams and then drafted Malawatch That’s two centers right what are they going to do with Nick Richards as a third string guy especially because a team like them who’s so far over the second apron so far over Having a $5 million third string center does not make a lot of sense Richards makes 5 million right now Uh he he is on an expiring contract so no real long-term concerns Good player Nick Richards is pretty good He averaged nine and eight last year with uh the combination of Phoenix and Charlotte across the season Uh closer to like if you round up he was a 10-9 guy with the Suns and 23 minutes a game Like Nick Richards is a good player at 5 million a year Uh does this signal he’s somebody the pitchers would be interested in having as their backup five because Nick Richards to me is more of a backup five than a starting five Every stop of his career pre uh Phoenix he was supposed to be a bench banging Mark Williams got hurt so much that he started a lot with the Hornets Uh however he 5 million a year suggests the price range season That’s also about the price range that Isaiah Jackson could land Perhaps his value is higher than I thought So just keep in mind there it is Interest in a reserve center Uh that does suggest that you know they’re still evaluating other options at the spot Not the backup spot to be clear Obviously Rick Carlile saying Miles Turner is the number one priority Uh I still think with Isaiah Jackson being a restricted free agent his odds of staying with the Pacers went up That doesn’t mean it’s a lock That doesn’t mean that’s guaranteed to be a thing that happens But Nick Richards is a good player right and if he’s more available for extremely cheap in a trade if not nothing because the Suns would just like financial relief yeah kick it around if you’re the Pacers right see what the price is See if it makes sense to have him What else would you do with the rest of the players on your team though who knows uh people talked about when I saw this rumor I saw like what would the salary match be right all the cheap guys on the Pacers who make around what Nick Richards makes is like Tony Bradley Ben Shepard Johnny Fury and then everybody else makes more than him and is much more valuable than him in a trade That is true Um Ben Shepard you know you don’t want to give up anyone who makes more than him because they’re good players And Ben Shepard you don’t want to trade for a third string center for you don’t want to trade for a third string center Although he’d be a backer for the Pacers And that left Tony Bradley and like yeah I guess maybe the Suns would just do that and wave him or whatever but they don’t have to trade any salary for Nick Richards Nick Richards fits into the mid-level exception Uh so the Pacers could just take him in to the mid-level The Suns would get a trade exception that they couldn’t use but still they’d get one out of it So there doesn’t have to be any salary match for the Pacers at this exact moment Um there could be ways other ways to do such a trade So Nick Richards keep that in mind A center a backup center something we know the Pacers to need already but still an external option as opposed to their internal candidates Uh certainly interesting on that The last report that I want to talk about also comes from Michael Scott This one refers to some internal candidates Uh this is obviously more so related to the potential luxury tax bill facing the Pacers pending what they decide to do with their team building this offseason Quote “Teams around the league circle the wagons on the trade availability of three Pacers.” Benedict Matherin I’ve talked about that and why other teams might think the Pacers would want to move him Um again I he’s a very good player He might have a bigger role this year However he’s in this interesting band of players salary-wise that we’ll talk about in a second Obi Toppin also talked about him for the same reasons Good player but in that band of salary And the third one here is Jarus Walker The full quote from Scott His teams are on the league circle the wagon on the trade availability of Benick Mather Obi Tabin and Jarus Walker this season So Jarus Walker would he be a guy the Pacers would trade to shed money and when I say that about Jarus Walker or Obi-Wan or Ben Mather I’m not saying like they just salary dump them and give up picks to do that They would take stuff back They’re positive asset players but they would you know potentially financially motivated trades you know like the James Wiseman salary dump last year some stuff they’ve done in the past However Walker is interesting Like I have viewed him as too low of a salary to be considered in that group Right that if Turner signs even for like 25 million which I would consider like the lowest end of what I would expect maybe his his first year salary to be that would push the Pacers to 6 million 5 a.5 million over the tax with three roster spots still to fill Two of them have to be filled by default So by the end of that they’d be like 8 to 10 million over the tax So trading away Jarus Walker for a little to no money return you’d still be over And he’s cheap for two more years right so that does you little good unless you love the return you’re getting Whereas some of the more expensive guys the guys in the Mather and McConnell Nmith top and tier of salaries and Nith I’ve excluded from these discussions because he’s a 20 plus million dollar player making 11 million It does you don’t actually gain air quotes any financial flexibility by moving him That’s why I’ve talked about the other three guys because they actually are in the range where they could get the Pacers out of the tax if that’s actually a goal for them Jarus Walker has always felt to me to be too cheap of a of a salary number to do that Obviously they could trade two of those guys together right and then take back less money that way if they wanted to Uh that gets harder and harder the longer the offseason goes and the more other teams add players and make their plans But I was you know I see Jarus in there and I get it especially given his smaller amount of playing time for the Pacers in his career Teams wonder would he be available or whatever but like if they move top and they really want Jarus if if I’m not you know I don’t want to get into all that again And I’ve talked about that a million times but that’s the first time I think I’ve seen Jerus’s name written in a report in the offseason I saw some obviously during the season which made sense for similar reasons even well didn’t make sense for similar reasons although I get why his salary and and playing time would at least get other teams to talk about him Uh so that is the state of the Pacers and their offseason and free agency after one day of stuff They have done nothing Tomorrow we’ll talk about anything that they do or don’t do Uh perhaps something happens Perhaps one of their former players goes somewhere else Perhaps we learn more about their planning or see more rumors We will see If not we’ll pick up the pieces talk about some of their new guys uh talk about some other cap dorky minutia stuff that I haven’t talked about yet I always can find salary cap related things to talk about on these shows until the team is built Thank you guys so much for listening today You can find me on Twitter and Blue Sky Tony Aris this podcast lockdown pacers on Twitter and Instagram Uh back tomorrow talking more Pacers free agency Till then everybody see you very soon

Hello,
Maybe The Ayton Buyout made Pacers management think if they would like to offer him a contract again.
Hahahaha.
If by Wednesday when the Ayton buyout is done and the Pacers and Turner has yet to make a deal, maybe there will be a deal with Turner, Ayton, Lakers, Portland and Pacers brewing.
On a side note, I think the Pacers should get T.Jones or Brogdon if they are on a vet minimum deal to run the point so as Nemhard can improve himself as a 2 guard. Because when Hali is back he will most likely be going back to the 2.
Maybe his stock dropped watching his performance in the finals
Yea Myles turner Is gone🤷🏻🤷🏻😂😂
If he wants more than his worth based on his performance, he can be replaced. Rookies being drafted are out playing him one on one every year.
This looks like a situation where it's so clear to both the Pacers and the Turner camp that he'll re-sign that they just are taking their time. Basically a done deal.
Myles at 30 as had been floated sucked. The 25 now mentioned sounds much better.
No Hali = no real shot! A real shame! Turner isn't worth BIG $$$
Hawks are DANGEROUS!!!!!!!!
He's asking 10 to 15 mil too much. Naz is making 25mil a year and Santi Aldama is making 17.5mil a year. 🤷 I really like the Nic Richards idea.
