Everything I’m hearing about Nate Schmidt is that he’s an incredible human being

  1. As a Golden Knights fan prior to the Coyotes relocation, I was privileged to see Schmidt play in the peak of his career (2017-2020) as a “Golden Misfit”. He’s a steady presence on the blue line that plays a lot like Durzi and Marino – a defense-first blue liner that can play a ton of minutes. The man is a workhorse, for sure. And while scoring isn’t his primary threat, he can score. At the time, he was a $7M AAV D-man, and VGK traded him in a surprise trade in 2020 – most likely as a cap casualty.

He has had some injury struggles lately, but he played a pretty strong year in a depth role with the Panthers. (While playing for veteran minimum – they had a steal on that signing!) I don’t know if he’ll end up playing top line with Sergachev or Durzi, but you never know. (He was on Vegas’ top 2 pairings during his peak.)

I think this is a great salary, given that there’s some gamble on with his recent injury history. At 33, I’m not expecting him to go back to his 2017-2020 form, but I still think if he can stay healthy, he’ll be a great asset for our team.

I’m looking forward to seeing Nate as a Mammoth!

  2. “I would never say this to his face, but he’s a wonderful person and a gifted hockey player”

  3. Schmidt was a big part of the Cup winning Washington Capitals. Steady and positive. I think it’s a good pickup.
