🔴LIVE 🔴Oakland Athletics VS Tampa Bay Rays/July 01/ Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
just about to get underway and on the hill Drew Rasmusson what should we keep an eye on here
well he’s allowing just over one base runner per inning which is really good especially for a starter because these hitters get to see you two three maybe even four times in a start so just shows you how deceptive and how effective his stuff is we’ll see if it’s that way in this one okay all set to go at the plate lawrence Butler fast ball for a strike and we are underway just missed bounding ball here rolls foul swings through that one it’s a strikeout definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there i don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it pretty textbook pitching get ahead in the count get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage next up for the A’s Jacob Wilson now a high-fly ball out to left center mangum sizes this one up pulls it down and he makes the catch two down and time now to check out the A’s lineup and Chris this group has been struggling to put up runs lately
well they haven’t been on base a ton and even when they are they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base so they need a player or two to really step up have some quality at bats hit according to the situation and sort of break out of this i think if they do the rest of this lineup will follow brent Rooker stands in now and watches strike one
really good cutter that he’s able to front door and back door that pitch is devastating
and that’s in there at the knees
this guy’s pounding the zone hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches two down Doman and one and two was good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout fouls it back with two strikes
that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was
chases the fast up the ladder struck him out and the A’s are gone in order and now the Rays will get their first opportunity in a scoreless ball game it’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show back now in Tampa Bay and towing the slab here Jacob Lopez and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him yeah and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road sometimes you know it’s just a matter of luck it’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field don’t know what it is but I know this he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one
yandi Diaz the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one lopez in his rookie season 26 years old and they went out and made a trade for him last season next offering is in for a strike one way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity they’re doing that right here the one-1 is fouled off this guy at the dish excels in two strike counts got to be careful with him out there on the mound fouls it off still one and two gets a piece there we’ll do it again and there’s a rocket into the outfield around first and hustling for second the throw in and he’s got a leadoff double you know I was watching his rounds during batting practice today so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel go back up the middle and the other way sometimes when you step in the box during the game you get a little anxious and you get away from that but so far I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation so the go-ahead run in scoring position now the number two hitter Curtis Meade hard on the ground to first and he handles it himself for the out all right let’s take a look at the Rays lineup and one to watch of course their three-hole hitter Junior Camroero well he’s an important part of this lineup for sure i mean there’s no doubt about it Boog it’s somebody that they try to feed off of he does a lot of things you know very well up there at the plate he’s got a presence about him and you know he’s a guy that you really kind of like to watch swing the bat junior Camroero the batter now as he holds up his swing for ball one just missed ground ball to the right side and foul ball i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up that’s outside and it’s three and two kick sand deals fouled off again and it remains three and two and ball four two aboard man that’s a tough one to take on the full count but I guess he saw it really well it’s a really nice plate appearance now at the plate Christopher
Morureller that finds the mark on the inside corner the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone they’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot diaz on third camo at first one gone and a strike on the outside edge
i think ultimately you want to tie him up get the ball in on the plate so that he can’t get the barrel to it and hit it to the outfield
off the mark there and the count one and two
way to lay off that pitch down lefty out of the stretch runners at first and third this one in the dirt and an excellent job keeping it right there that one inside and it’s three and two really good take especially with two strikes swing and a miss struck him out certainly a strikeout situation right there the infield playing back and this pitcher has to step up and get the swing and miss really nice job of attacking the hitter at the plate pretty big two out at bat coming up now and stepping in is the speedy Jake Mangum he’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup well they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now and fouled off corners are occupied with two down popped up to the left into foul ground and the inning is over so the Rays strand a pair scoreless after one new inning getting started now it’s the rookie first baseman Nick Curts come on rasmusen back to work that’s hard hit on the line diaz takes it in for the out and a quick out number one
clearly ready to hit right there first pitch of the inning hits a bullet and it just is one of those bad luck abs shay Langalers up next for the A’s and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike rasmusen when you talk about his skill set he stops teams from getting hits that’s the thing that he’s so good at he’s just really difficult to get base hits against well he’s got power and he has a reputation of being a strikethrower so to his advantage he can expand the zone that misses the zone going to count one and two
he can throw that fast ball slightly above the top of the strike zone to get hitters to chase he can also break it off because when you’re geared up for good velocity that one ripped and it one hops the wall round second digging for third the relay throw he’s in there so what’s the approach from an offensive perspective against a guy that doesn’t give up a lot of hits
i think you just kind of have to lean out over the plate and you know take your base but seriously you you just have to try to shorten up i think guys choking up on the bat a little bit to have some more bat control be a little bit quicker and don’t get greedy one down runner at third Tyler Sodstrom up next for the A’s it’s been a tough stretch for him at the plate barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month and the first pitch misses for ball one that’s down and in ed Drummond behind the plate calling balls and strikes maybe one of the most respected umpires around the league he’s not the kind of umpire that you’re likely to notice back there and that can be a huge compliment really so if you’re just kind of quietly doing your job staying consistent with your calls hitters pitchers managers even fans they’re all going to appreciate you ed Drummond he’s that kind of umpire one away with a runner at third here in the top of the second and he swings and lifts one to deep center field that’s back pulls it in on the warning track and that should get the job done as he tags from third the run comes across and the A’s score first it’s one- nothing next up for the A’s Max swing and a popup walls drops into the glove and that’s the third out so they get one run on one base hit no errors no one left now to the bottom of the second it’s the A’s one the Rays nothing back here at Tropicana Field bottom of the second and stepping in for the Rays Jonathan
Aranda and that one is inside pitch misses outside and the count is 2 and0 and downstairs yeah there’s the strike highf fly ball on that one curling foul down the right side fouled off the plate they’ll do it again had a swing and a miss beat him with a fast ball
oh nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him but that’s pretty much what happened very hitable location but he found a way to just get it by him jose Cabierro next to hit for the Rays good defender he’s been inconsistent offensively pitch misses inside and it’s one and0 one out base is empty swings through that one for strike one now this one’s crushed down the line hooking foul ball
that was a nice bid right there to try to tie up this ball game just couldn’t keep it from bending foul he looked locked in on that swing pitcher better be careful with him right now
that one drifts inside close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed you know getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat strike three and that’s two in a row danny Jansen to hit here and the slider just misses that pitch clips the outside corner and it’s one and one two out space is empty that one missing inside pitch misses and the count is three and one swing and a highf fly ball in the air left field soderstrom makes the catch and that is that we played two innings it’s one to nothing and welcome back to the ballpark on to the third inning here’s Luis Oas how about this one Boo in 2023 Aras hit grand slams for Boston in back-to back plate appearances they happened on different days but he still became the first Red Sox player to do it since Jimmy Fox in 1940 and now one and two swung on belted mangum going back on this one
onto the track and he makes the catch denzel Clark
denzel Clark now at the plate this is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively chris and when you talk about preventing runs from being scored this guy is a big contributor that one finds the zone strike one
i was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense especially at a premier position and that’s what he does sneaks through base hit so that will bring up the top of the order with one away lawrence Butler will hit next in there for a strike at the top of the zone the hitting’s going to come around he’s going to figure it out but right now his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense next offering is in for a strike oh he’s really working that inside corner with the cutter i tell you what I hated that pitch so tough to get the barrel to and to keep it fair
on the ground right side four gets it to first play is made two out now batting number five next up for the A’s Jacob Wilson fly to center his first time he’s 0 for one the emmo for him is contact a guy who’s going to deliver average not a ton of power he’s looking to hit a line drive somewhere
well that’s why it’s a team and when you look at a lineup he’s a great two-hole hitter or a guy that you could put at the bottom to help turn that lineup over to have some momentum for your top hitters coming up to the plate man on second two down that one fouled off strikes him out with a 100 one hit one left we move on to the bottom of inning number three it’s the A’s one the Rays nothing as we go to the last of the third here’s the shortstop at the play taylor
Walls with a shorts stop takes a All that misses the zone and the count two and one and that one hit to first curts steps on the bag one gone bottom of the third inning
batting rightielder Yandi Diaz
so the Rays batting order turns over yandi Diaz now he had a leadoff double in the bottom of the first fought off foul next pitch is outside just off the outside edge looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up doesn’t want to make another mistake one down base is empty that one misses now three and one next offering is fouled back outside and that is ball four what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that walk one down here’s the second baseman curtis me grounded out his first time double play ball to second there’s one and that’s two so no runs no hits no errors and no one left three innings complete it’s the A’s one the Rays nothing start of the fourth now it’s the right fielder Brent Rooker
taking high in the draft he’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level
just missed rooker goes 6′ 3 in 225 lbs a former first round pick back in 2017 swang and a miss i think he was sitting off speed there next offering way upstairs and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again and now the count filled up three and two down good job to fight that one off sit him down on the ground to third camro whips it across he made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat
well he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution
so here’s the cleanup hitter Nick Curts he’s 0 for one just off the inside edge lifted in the air out to left he’s got it and there’s two away now batting catcher Sha Langers
two outs space is empty and now the catcher comes up to him shay Langalers he tripled and scored his first time this one in the air center field mangum has a beat on it makes the grab and that’ll do it ready to go bottom four here’s the third baseman junior Camro
junior Camero that one finds the zone strike one
he’s pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn’t work out for success but you can never predict baseball
just missed misses off the play and it’s two and one right through there for a strike just off the outside part of the plate now in this three ball count down in the ball game you’ve got to be very selective take your walk if they’ll give it to you foul ball left side he’ll see another in the air foul off first full extension makes the catch great reaction there the momentum of the dive takes him into foul territory but comes up and makes the play outstanding job to get an out right there next to bat will be the Rays four hitter Christopher Morell he struck out swinging at his first atbat that one hooked foul and it’s quickly nothing and two on the designated hitter raised down by a run almost got him a’s leading by a run ground ball left side sends it across to first and there’s two away now batting center fielder Jake Mangum
and now the center fielder Jake Mangum 0 for one as he popped out foul to third his first time up and that one is popped in the air shallow center Wilson makes the catch inning over rays go in order one two three and it remains one- nothing and we’re back all set for the start of the inning here’s the left fielder Tyler Sodstrom rasmusa back to work and that one is downstairs and that’s ball one hit hard on the ground is short walls throws to first and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth now batting third base Max Maxy getting ready to hit first time up was a pop out upstairs and that is ball one and another ball base is empty one away and we’re in the top of the fifth swing and a fly ball well struck left field
cabierro pulls it down and there’s two gone now batting second two down base is empty luis Urias digs in now 0 for one with a fly out to center and first offering is fouled off two outs fast ball is outside swing and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field this one’s got a chance say goodbye to that one he’ll circle the bases it’s his eighth home run of the year and they tack on to their lead it’s two nothing he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer
and you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat he’s that confident anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one nice piece of hitting there at the plate here’s a speed threat denzel Clark one for one with a single so far lifted in the air right field diaz makes the grab and that’ll end the inning the A’s get one on this homer it’s now a two nothing ball game major League Baseball is on the show back now in Tampa Bay and here’s the first baseman Jonathan Aranda
well these fans definitely want to get involved in the game all it’s going to take is to get the lead off man or even a base runner on that one close rule to ball ball one good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone that one is absolutely belted and it’s a one hopper off the wall should be extra bases to second pulls him off the bag love how he let that ball travel trusted his hands nice job of going the other way runner in scoring position no outs so next to the plate for Tampa Bay Jose Cabayro and they get it in quickly first and third now with nobody out
went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws
so runners at the corners nobody out jansen now at the plate and a first pitch fastball is in for a strike runners at the corners nobody out last half of inning number five drilled in the air high and deep right field on the move racing back pulls it in on the warning track runner tags from third he’ll score on the sack fly and a 2-1 ball game now
there you go nice little RBI there it’s a great at bat got the job done now up for Tampa Bay taylor Wall
0 for one he grounded out in his first at bat definitely wants to stay out of the double play here ball on the ground in the infield should be an inning ending double play grounds one to short dives and he can’t hang on no throw and they can’t get the out
oh that started and ended pretty quickly no messing around right there now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up
yandi Diaz the next to hit
i’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound this guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot anything but the inning ending double play boog hitter’s got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit now batting second base Curtis Me
Curtis Meade next to hit for the Rays for two in this one headed down the line and that’s a foul ball cabierro at second walls at first two out of the inning the A’s bullpen has some movement hogan Harris the young lefty looks to be getting himself ready number 49 also throwing slice to right plays it out of bounds and it eats him up the run comes in to score from second we are tied at two oh here we are third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated there comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move jacob Lopez is done and a pretty decent effort out of him tie ball game new arm out of the pen when we get back mitch Spence will take over here he has a great slider with tons of movement and stepping in for the Rays Junior Camroero and remember he was absolutely robbed of a base hit last time up swing and a tapper that rolls foul outside low ball one here’s a high chopper curts throws to first in time they limit the damage here they get two and draw even again five innings complete we are tied 2-2 back here at Tropicana Field top six now it’s the DH lawrence Butler swinging a foul straight back
you know these athletics just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game chasing pitches has been a big part of the story we’ve seen it quite a bit today it’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game
gets a piece and stays alive fouls that off to the left and will do it again got him looking make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today
well it’s just a great job of playing catch with the catcher exactly where the catcher set up is where he threw that pitch and probably fooled the umpire a little bit because there was no budge at all jacob Wilson up next for the A’s went down looking on three pitches last time let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here
gets down base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out single now batting right
Brent Rooker up next for the A’s pitches in for a strike it’s 0 and one well he’s been incredibly efficient in this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2
pretty frugal guy he is very efficient with the pitch count in this one with a go ahead run at first and we’re the top half of the six and delivers outside and the next pitch is way outside swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher brings it in that’s out number two now that is number 16
Nick Curts up next for the A’s and that misses one and0 bullpen movement for the Rays garrick Clevenger warming up for manager Kevin Cash or a right-hander loosening up as well next pitch way upstairs oh he’s really working him away this at bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield there’s a swing and a drive gone a two-run shot his 13th home run of the season and they slide in front in the sixth it’s 4-2 that’s a fun way to take the lead just hit one out of the park really great job of anticipation there he knows he throws the sinker that one down in the zone you’re trying to beat it to the spot it’s getting to well he won manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound drew Rasmusen won’t go any further tonight two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher ryan Pepio taking over on the mound should be a good first match up for him here he’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season they’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up
so two down here’s the power hitting catcher sheay Langelers splits the plate 0 and one swinging a foul back that’s out of play next offering upstairs that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going fights that one away still one and two oh
he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss he’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit try to move it around create just a little bit of illusion at the end wow this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run i love his tenacity swings through it and that’s a strike out but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer it’s now 42 and welcome back to the ballpark and here is Christopher Morell that to right
rooker on his way over he’s got it and there’s one down oh those can be pretty fun as an outfielder got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down nothing better than that you feel like a wide receiver playing football on the ground right side urias tosses to first and that is out number two
now batting first base Jonathan Aronda so next to the plate for Tampa Bay Jonathan Aranda one for two and first offering is fouled off two down nobody on here in the bottom of the six well struck right field going back onto the track and he makes the catch and we’re back now the left fielder Tyler Soderstrom
leftielder Tyler Sodrom pepio a 63 righty 27 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2019 delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 drilled out towards left center field back there makes the catch up against the wall excellent job and I tell you what the times that I played left field getting a play like that you love the opportunity to make it
and now Maxie Come on and first offering is fouled off in there at the knees for a strike that big curve inside a pitch that can buckle you a little bit looks like a fast ball out of the hand and then just drops over that inside part of the plate still two and two after the foul ball rips that one center field base hit now batting
Luis Urias getting ready to hit he’s already homerred here in this one and a swing and a miss and a foul ball foul ball still 0 and two
that was the emergency hack right there outside that misses and the count is even two and two in the air right field pretty well struck that one’s deep and that ball is out of here another homer his second home run of the game and they add a couple more it’s 62 that’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure that’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark you want to bottle that type of approach here’s the center fielder Denzel Clark that’s off the mark and it’s
one and0 a swing and a miss and that’s strike one still only one out here in the inning swinging a miss as he was late kelly just threw that fast ball by him elevated and if you’re not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that velocity up and in and it’s two and two hard grounder into the outfield for a knock so the one out hit turns the lineup over now batting yeah the batter now Lawrence Butler 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out and first offering is fouled off clark stands at first with one out there’s the swing and a miss next one misses it’s a ball and two strikes headed towards the corner cabierro on the move puts it away for the out and there are two outs now batting number five and the batter will be the shortstop Jacob Wilson one for three sing you talk about a guy that has all the skills the range is really good but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays just missed
and because of that big power arm he’s able to play a little bit deeper make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner that’s impressive
next offering is in for a strike ruer takes off pitching for a strike safe at second with a stolen base that was close but Stackcast shows us why he so often seems to be on the safe side of these steel attempts chris
yeah you see that plus speed and he needed every last bit of it to swipe that bag such a threat on the bases that one the other way and that’s just fouled a change up missing ball two
this guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat he just battles up there he doesn’t take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away the 2-2 and that’s outside he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked
eighth pitch of the at coming up swing and a miss and that is that the A’s with a two-run blast it’s now 62 you’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show back now in Tampa Bay bottom of the seventh here’s the left fielder jose Caviierro clips the outside corner strike one the Athletics have some bullpen action jp Sears appears to be getting loose nukem getting loose as well comes up empty got him looking that’s a strike out now betting
now it’s Jansen to hit right through there for a strike here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it he’ll touch them all his ninth homer of the year and they close the gap it’s 63 that gives them hope they can pull off this comeback they just need a few more swings like that and they’re back in business well he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time took a direct path to the ball excellent extension and just drove it out of here nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that now Taylor Walls and that’s a strike one out base is empty and a run in near the bottom of the seventh that one almost got him swing and a miss chased it out of the zone swing and a ground ball up the middle now the throw to first on the run nicely done for the out
i’m impressed with this guy’s internal clock he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step secure his grip on the baseball and make a strong accurate throw next to hit Yandi Diaz here’s a rocket out to left reaching for it makes the catch one scores in the inning coming on this solo home run it’s now 63 welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth kevin Kelly definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone makes hitters earn their way on base and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes so digging in Brent Rooker 0 for three in this one hard ground ball base knock now batting number 16 so up next Nick Curts back in the sixth he drove a two-run shot out of here to help them get the lead they’re working with
yeah definitely one of the bigger moments in this game so far and it could be one we look back on when this game is over as well here’s a high-fly ball out to center mangum has this one sized up squeezes it and there’s one down now batting catcher Shay Langalers so a man aboard and here’s the catcher Shay Langalers known for his rocket arm behind the plate this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate good game caller good at framing but it’s that big arm that really stands out yeah and because he’s got the big arm he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it that one blasted deep to right that’s back there
that’s down one hops off the wall coming home he will score it’s seven to three
comes through with the RBI that pretty much split the zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay one out runner at second tyler Soderstrom up next for the A’s yeah that’s fouled off when you have a catcher that can throw like that a pitcher doesn’t have to worry as much about the slide step he can keep his mechanics intact and have a better opportunity of getting that hitter out with a swing and miss foul ball the A’s looking to add another that one misses and the count is one and two fights it off he’ll see another
well he’s having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you’re seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact foul ball still a one and two count
good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat in the air left field cabierro pauls it in and there’s two away up next for the A’s third base Max max Muny up next for the
A’s that’s off the inside corner and that is ball one that one missed runner at second two down and we’re in the top of the eighth and that’s through there for a strike next pitch is inside and now three and one and a foul ball on the ground right side lays out but he can’t squeeze it no throw and they don’t get the out now batting second base now it’s the second baseman Luis Urias and everyone is thinking the same thing right now
yeah they’re thinking will he do it again he’s already homered twice and most recently in the seventh this guy’s left a huge mark on this game
as well as on the baseball and that’s through there for a strike and it’s 0 and one and the sweeper catches the plate perhaps not quite ready to hit first two pitches by him for a couple of strikes now back is against the wall he’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly ouch he had two strikes on him and he hit him next up for the A’s Denzel Clark you talk about elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list yeah we go beyond just you know fielding percentage and you know what it looks like but the ability to have range and you know close holes that you know are normally there against an average defender but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness two outs hot shot to third they take the force out that ends the inning and they limit the damage a’s get one on the RBI double it’s now a four-run lead at 73 you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth jp Sears and he’s got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters
now the number two hitter Curtis Meade that’s in for a strike
hugan the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics oh now this one’s blasted deep to left way back there on its way and out of here that’ll fire up the dugout his fourth home run of the season and they’re chipping away it’s 74 that swing just injected more drama into this one he’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there you don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over stays through the ball gets the loft and gets the home run now the third baseman Junior Camro that’s a strike it’s 0 and one when you look at the ability to save runs defensively but then also put runs up on the scoreboard that’s the kind of player that every championship team needs to have
lefty continues to work but the closer getting loose in the bullpen just missed the A’s bullpen has some movement brett Valentine a right-hander with big strikeout stuff is getting it fired up harris also getting ready missed with a change up two and one always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning ground ball up the middle dives but it kicks off his glove no throw and they come away without an out at the plate now for the Rays is the DH christopher Morurell 0 for three a fly out a ground out and a strike out in for a strike 0 and one and that one missing low one on nobody out a run in the bottom half of the eighth inning and there’s a base hit to left throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out well a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win first and second no outs now up for Tampa Bay Jake Mangum that’s in there and that’s strike one way inside gets out of the way camo over at second morell at first with no outs swinging a foul back and that’s out of play the tying run at the plate hacks and misses it’s a strike out
he had him out in front which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field
just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one and now the first baseman Jonathan Aranda and ball one well all eyes on the double play ball in this spot no better way to get out of this inning one out runners at first and second swung on popped up left side wilson drops into the glove two down now batting left fielder Jose Cavayo manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen jp Sears out of the game it’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute so the closer summoned from the bullpen Brett Valentine on for his major league debut and a moment he will never forget better believe that it’s always so special the first time you get into a big league ball game i did it as a position player but for him as a pitcher I’m sure there’s some nerves there probably don’t want to squeeze the baseball too tight just relax and do what you’re capable of doing cabierro in now takes ball one off the plate
well this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter you can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations tying run at the plate ah ground ball and that’s through the infield around third he’ll score it’s an RBI single it’s seven to five just a clutch at bat right there big time swing when this team really needed it smash that one through the infield for the knock when it’s hit that hard it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play really important at bat coming up now making a move at second base entering as the pinch runner number 14
first and second two outs and now Danny Jansen in there for strike one two aboard two outs out of the ground to third tosses across to first that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand so two runs on four hits no errors but two are left stranded through eight full it’s the A7 the Rays five now
we’re back it’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound Paul Jerves
just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpin can give their players a chance to fight back into the game
now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s Lawrence Butler and first offering is fouled off right through there for a strike out towards right center field makes the catch for the out and there’s one down
now batting number five Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s
Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out swings and blasts one deep to left center and it hits the fence and that’s a double oh that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there loud contact leads to the double i mean you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick one out runner at second and now the right fielder Brent Rooker and that one clips the corner
yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits when you look at the elite teams in the game right now there is going to be the slug no question about it but the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter bows it off still one and two yeah and I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night
that is true yeah the one two misses to even the count swinging a drive deep right field and a foul ball man at second got him swinging well that’s the money maker right there for two strikes slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter
i mean that’s just tough you’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off kurts the next to hit takes outside the 10 inside just missed that one finds the zone now two and one wilson stands at second with two gone that just misses three and one
get ready for some action here good RBI guy at the plate runners in scoring position and a hitter count here we go so now two on and two outs up next
and now a chance for Shay Langelers rbi knock for him last time now a chance to drive in another run and that one misses up and in ball one well he’s already in some trouble and falling behind in the count makes it even worse then you’ve got to throw the ball over more of the plate and that’s where they can really do damage against a guy like this pitch misses and it’s two and one
good spot for the hitter definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch
first and second two down here in the top of the ninth fast ball for a strike and a slider misses down and away and that’s awfully close i don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now
tyler Soderstrom next to bat for the A’s strike him out got him third out and that ends the frame two left on and 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth it’s the A7 the Rays five so bottom of the ninth and now here is Taylor Walls well you got the number nine hole hitter right here looking to do whatever he can to get on base turn this lineup over so the best hitters in this lineup have a chance to tie up the ball game or maybe even walk it off that one in the dirt and the count is one and one late on that fast ball and that just misses
executed that pitch very nicely just missed with it swing and a ground ball out to short one out bottom of the ninth
good slider inside right there batter fighting to get there just rolled over it got the ground ball here’s the Rays leadoff hitter Yandi Diaz and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike and that is out of play base is empty one away we’re in the last half of the ninth inning this one smacked out to left center and it looks like trouble makes the turn and heads for second and he’s got his second double of the game well that certainly feels good when you can win the at bat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there a lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head that’s what I’m trying to do just keep that approach simple and right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely now a huge at bat in this game coming up and stepping in for the Rays Curtis Me he’s coming off a big swing of the bat in the eighth inning Chris yeah he may still be riding a little high and for him hopefully the confidence is still there it was a solo shot and a very important run in this game this one belted deep left field on its way gone he circles the bases he’s done it again his second homer of the game it’s 77 he ambushed him right there Siggy
yeah swinging on that first pitch and I think losing one over the fence is exactly what he had in mind as well a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and got all of it so it’s all tied up thanks to the home run camo will hit next that catches the top part of the zone that’s strike one part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning they’re definitely looking to do some more damage that’s in there the Athletics have some bullpen action a right-hander appears to be getting loose back and forth we go a seessaw battle in the late stages of this one foul ball it stays nothing and two now a screamer into the outfield and that gets down into the gap stringing them together that’s three hits in a row nice line drive to the pull side met it out front but just stayed through it nice enough and ripped it into the outfield manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen brett Valentine gives way and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout back with a new arm after a quick break now pitching
Hogan Harris gets the call from the pin
and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up i think that’s a good move i know I never liked when opposing teams did that to me now here’s the Tampa Bay cleanup hitter entered as a pinch runner so this is his first plate appearance and it comes here in the ninth eddie lays down a bunt safe he beats it sometimes you can get a little too aggressive trying to cut off that lead run and try to make something happen that really isn’t there got to take that sure out at first base not sure what happened right there in terms of communication here in the bottom of the ninth one out jake Mangum now at the plate a switch hitter batting right at 96 that pitch is in for a strike one away and the game-winning run stands at second laser base hit here comes the throw the winning run crosses the plate and the Rays walk it off eight-7 when you’re down two runs in the ninth inning the odds are definitely stacked against you but they found a way to come up with some big hits they scored three runs for the win what an incredible way to finish this ball game and a final 8-7 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show thanks for stopping by i’m John Shami talk to you soon
