Cardinals vs. Pirates Game Highlights (7/2/25) | MLB Highlights
It’s hot enough to enjoy a day on the river here in Pittsburgh where the Cardinals and Pirates meet in game three. Come to think of it, it’s probably a good idea we’re getting out of town. Cardinals have not scored a run yet against the Pirates in the series. Hopefully, we’ll change that on this 82° day here at PNC Park. First things first, Mitch Keller against the Cardinals. First pitch of the ball game. Swung on hit to the gap in right center field. Should be extra bases as it thuds in front of the wall and Donovan in at second base on the first pitch. A double to start the game for the Cardinals who have not scored in this series.
So Mason Win is next for the Cardinals. He had a double off Paul skins last night. He’s having a good road trip. Struck him out and that’s a milestone. That’s 383 for Keller here at PNC Park. Matches Paul Mahalum for the most all time in this yard. Alec Berles looking for his first hit of the series. He’s 0 for eight and Berles takes a walk. Two on, one out. Nolan Gorman’s next excuse me bouncer to first. Horwitz to second one. That’s all they get.
Horwitz is a smart player.
Really smart player. Now it is Nbar the player we just mentioned that 38 to1 career average versus Keller and he is hit to load them up.
Thomas Saji heading at 258 with a home run. and the other way and picked by Horowitz and the Cardinals leave them loaded.
Kyler and the boys get out of it putting up another zero against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Well, Sunny Gray was magnificent in his first start on the road trip. Boy, you’d love to see similar production for the Cardinals today. Neil Cruz is plus 350 to get a hit here leading off against Sunny Gray in the bottom of the second. And he’s up there swinging and a fair ball hugs the line. Cruz into second base with a double. Now it’s Hayes and he just struck out Hayes. A perfect pitch and Sunny has his second strike out. Tommy Fam is next. Cruz takes off to third. Pitches a strike throw down. Not even close. Stolen base for O’Neal Cruz. And then he can advance himself. He is the National League stolen base leader after all.
And there it is. Tommy Fam delivers and headed to second. Puts on the brakes. Tommy Fam makes it one- nothing. Here’s Henry Davis
and a swing and a miss. Third strike out for Sunny. Two of them this inning and Isaiah Ker Falefa is next. No two. And that paints the outside corner. He strikes out three but gives up the game’s first run. The Pirates cash in a leadoff double and take a one- nothing lead. Mitch Keller at 48 pitches will face Jose Farine who had a leadoff double in the second inning. swing and a ball hollowly hit to third base where Hayes picks it up and throws him out. One away. PZ will come up. That one is up the middle and PZ squeezes a single into center field. That’s his first hit of the day. One on and one out for Victor Scott the second toward left. Fam, two outs. Struck him out. Donovan not happy. called third strike. Tommy Fam leads it off for the Pirates. Bottom of the order with Davis and then Connor FFT for the follow.
Tommy Fam shoots that one to second. Donovan had him positioned perfectly. There’s nine up, nine down for Sunny.
Henry Davis struck out the first time up. The pitch and he hits a one hopper to third. A long throw by Saji just in time to get Henry Davis. Sunny Gray struck out the Pirates shortstop to end the second inning. That’s the only inning in which Pittsburgh has scored. They have but three hits. Swinging a little pop into right and caught on the run by Donovan and that ends the inning. It’s still one- nothing the Pirates on top. Mitch Kelly ready to go.
Brown ball sharply hit at Ker Falefa and on to first to get Nbar. So JC retired on a couple of fine plays. Rolled over to third. Hayes gloves on two hops and we’ll throw out Si. Two down.
Here’s Keller’s pitch. Fairine hits it high in the air to left field. Tommy Fam has room as he moves back that spacious outfield. He makes the catch running onto the track. That ball traveled about 390 ft. The Pirates have the top of their order up in the sixth inning.
This is a prototypical guy you’d want hitting in this ballpark. That one’s hit a long way toward left center. And a nice running catch by Victor Scott. That’s a homer any place else but Pittsburgh. So one away. McCutchen’s next. Right to second. Can’t play him any better than that. That is excellent scouting and positioning. Lynn’s 0 for two. He’s grounded out. He’s flyed out. He’s going to be 0 for three as Sunny Gay is in a great rhythm. We got to get him some runs, don’t we? We head to the seventh inning already at PNC Park where the Pirates hold a one- nothing lead. Seventh inning coming up. Pirates one and the Cardinals nothing. Pedro Pahes is down a strike
as he strikes out. Pes looking. That’s his sixth punch out. Pahes not happy with that one. One away. Swinging a five ball out toward Fam deep and toward the notch. Long run for Fam. And Cruz is there too. And Fam will make the catch. Keller looking for a final out of this seventh inning. He does. Mitch Keller. Seven shut out innings. Well, Sunny Gray pitched another magnificent game, but he’s on the short end of a one- nothing decision.
Ouch. Take it. Lead off walk with Gonzalez at it first. Cruz has struck a double today. 3-2 is strike three. 81 miles an hour. A curveball at the bottom of the zone. Hayes has a 10-ame hitting streak on the line. He’s struck out twice so far. Hayes the other way. He’s got himself an 11game hitting streak. Gonzalez trying for third. He is safe. First and third with one out.
Fam has the only RBI in this ball game for either team.
And a base hit for Tommy Fam. Another riby. Another run. It’s two nothing. Tommy Fam on an RBI tear. Gives the Bucks a two nothing lead.
And looks like that’s going to be the end of the line for Sunny Gray.
Riley O’Brien has shown off that confidence with the stuff that he has. He should be confident. Falefa 0 for two against Sunny Gray. Those base runners are Gray’s responsibility. Up the middle, a base hit for IKF. This will score two. Pirates lead four to nothing in the seventh inning.
How about that? Two outs, two strikes, runners on second and third. IKF comes through with a huge swing of the bat today. Ker Falefa RBI’s 21 and 22. Here’s Horowitz and a ball bounced off the glove on the mitt rather of Pahes allows Kiner Fa to get into scoring position. A wild pitch. Swinging a ground ball, right side throw, base hit. Connor Falefa touches third. He’s going to score. And the wild pitch was costly. Horwitz knocks him in. Five nothing Pirates. Everything going right for the Buckos these days. Wow. Here we go. Ninth inning and the Pirates trying to shut out the Cardinals for a third straight game. And here in the ninth, it’ll be Isaac Matson on to work. Matson 2 and 0 with a 172 RA 15 and two/3 innings, six hits, five walks and 16 strikeouts. Line to right. Reynolds over. One away. The Bucks are two outs away from their sixth consecutive win a season high. And they’re one out away as Isaac Matson takes care of Fairmine.
Change up right here. Right on right change up from Matson that just corkcrews Fine. And the Pirates are an out away from a perfect home stand in a third consecutive shutout. Pop up right side. Spencer Horowitz in foul ground. Raise the Jolly Roger. An unforgettable sixgame home stand and three straight shutouts over the St. Louis Cardinals. October of 1976. The last time we saw this
