If you want to be an everyday, all you have to do is just follow over you get podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well. And today we got a whole variety of things to discuss. Nick Ley placed on waiverss by the St. Louis Blues. should the Sharks bite um as they try to add pieces to this uh roster. Uh Thomas Borlo traded away um and we get to know some of the newest San Jose Sharks by diving into Clingberg, Adelovic, uh Goddet, and Kurishv. So, let’s start with Nicoleti, who’s uh of course the kind of hot topic right now as the St. Louis Blues have placed the veteran defenseman on waiverss. the Blues, who have been very active in trying to add pieces to their blue line. Lety, who’s in the last year of his deal at $4 million, placed on waiverss with the hope that uh somebody will grab him and take him off the Blues hands. Uh for the Sharks, who are again about $10 million under the cap floor, need to add defensive pieces. Does it make sense for them to uh grab Nick Lety? So, we’re going to dive into Lety here uh and kind of get to know him a little bit more. So, Lety uh former first round pick way back in 2009, was 16th overall. Uh played for University of Minnesota, was drafted by Minnesota actually, never played a game for the Wild West. He was traded uh back in 2010 uh before the season started and broke into the NHL as a 19-year-old in the 2010 111 season. Spent a couple seasons with Chicago uh where he won a cup as a young as a youngster there. Um and then got traded to the Islanders where he spent seven years with the Islanders. Um then he got traded to Detroit. Uh then he became a free agent where he signed with the Blues and was with the Blues for the last four seasons. Um so with the Blues, he’s on a one year he’s got one year left on his deal at $4 million. So very easy contract to fit in. And again, as we heard from Mike Greer, right, you want to continue to chip away at at trying to get to the floor. So, um, this year for Lety as well, he’s 6′ 28 pounds. He’ll be 34, uh, for this season. Like I said, one year, $4 million. Um, this season missed a lot of games because of a, uh, undiagnosed or undisclosed, sorry, excuse me, lower body injury. Uh, there’s rumors it could have been a bit of a nerve issue, uh, from what I was kind of researching and stuff, but never was confirmed. So, um, this year he had in 31 games, two goals, three assists with 21 shots on goal. Played 1840 time on ice. Uh, Corsy Forsa when he was on the ice, the Blues outshot the other team or shot attempts wise uh 48.56% of time. When he was on the ice, the Blues scored 58% of the goals. Um the the hope with Lety is he can return to form from what we saw in the 23 24 season where he was a much more impactful player and again right missing uh an entire season uh or you know 50 games in a season last year not not a great uh you can understand why the production might have been down. Um but this the previous year he played 81 games, had three goals, 25 assists, 28 points, played about 22 minutes a night. Um and with about 82 shots on goal. Um so just you know a a much more productive player. um looking at his stats especially um kind like his war from the past couple seasons again last year bit of a you you the hope is you kind of throw this away as you’re looking at it but um he’s been a you know kind of 51% war had a little bit of a like this year has been under 51% the offense definitely dried up this year um as we we kind of talked about and especially with with dealing with this injury but he usually plays against you know pretty solid competition placed with solid teammates and kind of that third pairing time on ice. Uh where I think with San Jose might get a little bit more time on ice, but not going to be known for his offense. Didn’t get much special teams um or didn’t get like basically any special teams. So basically just kind of a five on five player this season. Um, looking at his usage chart, he was an average depth defenseman for the the Blues where he didn’t get uh wasn’t facing, you know, again, not not the toughest competition. Um, and got some, you know, offensive zone starts here and there, but wasn’t really uh kind of relied upon for his offense. So, um, the the big thing though, I think the most interesting thing is if you look at what he does well, especially the 23-24 season, uh, looking at his all three zones, which kind of like micro tracks a lot of the micro stats of like just what he does well and what he doesn’t do well. Like he doesn’t drive offense, which is what we expected, right? but he’s very good at getting the puck into the offensive zone, the zone entries. And he’s very good at retrieving the puck out of the defensive zone um and kind of getting it going, which we talked to Mike when hearing from Mike Greer, right? He wants a defenseman who can play some defense and get the puck up to the forwards. Nicki kind of checks those boxes. He does struggle with uh you know, zone entry defense, which is kind of like keeping the the puck. you have a a forwards attacking him basically, how often does the puck end up in the zone, but I I think though for the Sharks, kind of thinking this out loud, it would make some sense, right? Um especially if you you feel like you’re having a hard time trying to sign free agents. Clearly, Nick Leti maybe he just unfortunately gets the Barka good treatment of we can’t trade you so we’re going to kind of force our way here and especially for Lety who does have a 16 team no trade clause um this year uh he will be uh so yeah 16 team no trade clause um and then which but it’s also the last year of his deal um so it kind of makes someense And to me, I don’t think the Blues put him on waiverss now if they don’t think someone is going to grab him. So, I wouldn’t be surpris I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he uh we we kind of see the Barkley Gro shenanigans 2.0. So, I assume the Sharks would probably be on his no trade list and this is probably the workaround. So, the hope is though, maybe he can come in um reestablish his value back to what we saw in the 23 24 season and then maybe the Sharks uh send him on his way uh at the trade deadline to a team that is looking for um like we see all the time, you know, the Cody CC type of treatment, right, where you you’re looking for bottom six defenders who can play hard, etc., etc. And I think that kind of would be Let’s role here. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if if the Sharks do this, especially if they feel like they’re going to strike out uh in free agency. So, don’t be surprised if the Sharks do uh end up grabbing Lety. I think he fits what Mike Greer is kind of looking for here. So, um the other big transaction today uh was the Sharks traded former second round pick Thomas Bordal uh to the New Jersey Devils for Shane Bowers. Um Bowers is a basically a a career AHL type of player. Um he’s played 13 games in the NHL, but has spent most of his time um playing in the AHL. Um we we asked I mean Grew has asked about Bordello like kind of keeping him and basically two days later or a day later they traded him. So, um, as for Bowers, I guess the fit for him, like he’s just going to be a bottom six type of forward for the, uh, for the Barracuda this season. Um, like again, you’re not getting a ton of offense. Uh he’s, you know, goodsized guy, 6’2, 185 lbs, but like as also a former first round pick of the Ottawa Senators back in 2017, uh 28th overall, but last year with the the Udica Comets, he in 65 games, he had three goals and 14 assists. Like the most uh way back in 1920, uh he had 27 uh points, including 10 goals and 17 assists. but he’s a bottom six forward basically for the Barracuda and just more depth for them. So, um you do feel bad for BLO where it just never felt like especially once Greer got here just didn’t feel like Bordlo was a Mike Greer type of player and that 2020 draft class as we talked about kind of earlier this summer is now down to one uh with Daniel Gusheen as the lone member left from that that class and a class that had a lot of promise. Um, looks like it’s going to be another kind of dud class for the San Jose Sharks as uh uh again, Guushian is the only one. So, hoping Borlow is able to find some traction and and kind of earn his way and to play some NHL games. I always like Borlow and you know, as he played. Um, but again, just we we we know what Mike Greer wants, right? And he definitely values size and skill. And I think Bordlo is just kind of that tweener player of not skilled enough to play in the top six, right? And not big enough and doesn’t play the style of game I guess Greer wants when kind of looking at bottom six players. So unfortunately just uh just didn’t work out for Bordalow here. And wish him the best of luck. So, um, we’re going to move on and look at some of the new players that the Sharks acquired, including starting with John Clingberg and why I think, uh, digging into the Clingberg stuff, a little bit of hope, a little bit of hope here with with Clingberg and uh, the Sharks maybe have something here a little bit. So, uh, we’ll get to that here in just one second. Ever wish managing your money felt easier? With Monarch Money? It can be. All right, before we continue, do of course want to thank you for making locked on Sharks your first listen, I note the draft is done. Uh the big free agency wave is done. That doesn’t mean the content stops here as we’ll start to kind of dig into all the new draft new drafties. Uh we’ll start kind of preparing for the season, which uh even though it’s two months away, it’ll be here quicker than you realize. So, uh, make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Okay. Um, so we have four new players that the Sharks acquired either via signings or trades. So, we’re going to kind of dig start to kind of dig into these guys and where they fit um, with the San Jose Sharks and just get to know these guys uh, a little bit better here. So, we’re going to start with John uh, Clingberg. So, Clingberg is a former fifth round pick uh of the Dallas Stars from the 2010 draft from Sweden. Uh he’ll be 33 uh for this season. He turns 33 in August here. Right-handed shot. 6’2, 185 pounds. Um he’s played for the Stars, the Ducks, uh the Wild, the Leafs, and then this year with the Oilers. has dealt with some injuries lately, but uh from his press availability did say that today that he is the healthiest he’s been in years and this is kind of the first time he’s been able to just focus on training this off seasonason and not just rehab. um his time, especially with the the Stars, um he put up some massive seasons, including a 67 point season in the 2017 uh 2018 um where he finished sixth in Norris votes that year. Um had another season where he put up 58 points, was also sixth in Norris votes as well. Um and like he’s was a a big-time producer for the Stars. um but really you know since he left the Stars has kind of wandered and has struggled I guess to kind of find his footing. So um looking at at this last season where he he missed majority of the season um so in the 23 24 season he signed with the Maple Leafs got hurt like really early in the season and basically didn’t return until um near the end of the season with the Edmonton Oilers. So he played uh 11 games this year. One goal, three assists, 19 shots on goal. Regular season uh 1715 time on ice. 48.82% Cory4, 4706 goals for for him uh during this season. And again, Clingberg is a offensive first type of defenseman. Uh like playing defense, not really his his thing. I guess we’ll go to we’ll be nice. Um in the playoffs this year though with Edmonton, he did have in 19 games had a goal, three assists for four points while playing about 19 minutes a night for Edmonton. um with the Sharks, of course, I think he’s going to see probably more time on ice. So, um not much when it comes to the evolving hockey card because he just didn’t play a lot of minutes. But if you go back to the last season, he was fully healthy um that 22 23 season where he started the season with the Ducks um and then got traded to the Minnesota Wild. He played was playing kind of top carrying minutes playing on the power play, not playing shorthanded, but seventh percentile players, 78th percentile offensively, first percentile defensively. Uh again, uh very much in the Eric Carlson mold of defense where we’re just going to uh drive offense and the defense is going to suffer a little bit. So, um, looking at what he did well, especially that season, um, great with the passing, great with the zone exits, um, and entries, like those were his kind of bread and butter is is again that getting the puck forward, um, getting the puck going and especially the passing kind of creating from his passing. And you think about with the Sharks rate um with some of the forwards like Celibbrini and Smith and Ekkan kind of getting those passes to them in the high danger areas. I think Clingberg can really really excel at that. Again, the zone entry defense a bit of a struggle there. And I I kind of looking at what the Sharks defensive core actually the the perfect partner for him might be Shakir Madullan who does struggle right now especially as a young defenseman in the kind of carrying the puck and getting him going from point A to B, but does very well at that zone entry defense. If you combine those two together, you might be able to uh you know at least kind of help compensate for for each other here. So, um, looking at how Clingberg was was, uh, utilized, uh, struggling top four two-way defenseman, uh, was was given, you know, not a lot of offensive or sorry, was given some some offensive zone starts, but also kind of faced a little bit tougher competition, but again, like you have to keep in mind how injury and stuff like that. So, um I do think this is a a player worth, especially with the $4 million. Um interesting with his his contract here where he is uh has a no trade clause. I believe it’s until July 30th. Um and then after that, so yeah, July or January 30th, sorry, is is where it’s a no trade clause and then it kicks in uh to a modified 14 team no trade list. So, um, gives the sharks some options here. You know, at least he can kind of settle in and then at the trade deadline, if he feels like he can go somewhere to try to win, maybe the sharks are able to do that. So, um, switching over to Nadelkovich here, um, as we’re going to starting from the back and working our way up. So, uh, Nadulkovich, of course, a the goalie that the Sharks acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Um he was a former uh Carolina Hurricane uh draft pick, was picked in the second round, the 2014 P um draft there, 37th overall. Uh bounced around in the the OL a little bit before kind of working his way up. uh debuted in the NHL in 2016, but didn’t really play a lot until the 20 uh the 2020 21 season during the COVID bubble where he was a top three CER finalist. Um you know, was on the all rookie team like had an amazing season in 23 games. He had a 932 save percentage of 190 goals against average. um quickly got traded that off seasonason to Detroit and it looked like Carolina made the right choice as he’s struggled to kind of to replicate anywhere close to those numbers. So, um granted Detroit and Pittsburgh not anywhere near Carolina, but um still um so he’s 6′ 23 pounds. He’s will be 29 this year. Like I said, uh has one year at $2.5 million last year with the Penguins. Played 35 games, 3 uh.12 goals against 8.94 save percentage. He allowed 112 goals. Expected goals allowed was 111, which is a minus one goals saved above expected, which is a very respectable number, especially considering um the Penguins, who are much like the Sharks, not the greatest team, right? With an 801 high danger save percentage. Um, you know, for Nadulkovich, I I think kind of looking at, you know, how he’s been the past couple seasons is he’s been a very solid 1B type of starter, which is what you would expect him to kind of fall into with with if Ascrov does what we think Ascrov is going to be. Um projected war the last three years has been 10% but it’s really been um that 22 23 season uh really struggled uh that year and kind of uh has been an anchor for the past couple years. Um he’s been pretty solid on the penalty kill. Um medium danger saves is are he’s kind of in the 50th percentile range there. Um pretty cons like the consistency has been pretty decent here. Um but you know the last two seasons kind of bounced back a little bit here uh when it comes to you know at least his wins above replacement where he kind of ranks in that in that area. So um I I know again the numbers aren’t super sexy and great. Um, but I do think one like those Detroit teams kind of really got shelled if you like the 2122 Detroit team, 22 23 uh Detroit team got shel again. Not that the Sharks are going to be in much better position. I think when it comes to uh he protecting their goalies here, but I think there’s enough there. And I I think especially after playing on a bad Penguins team this season and last season and putting up again decentish numbers, I do think Nvelalkovic can give you a solid 35 to 40 games, which is what you you’re kind of expecting for him. Um in the hope that Ascrov can kind of be the guy that’s starting 45 to 50 games, right? Um, so I like I think it’s I do think it’s an improvement on Alexander Gorgv. Uh, I do think Nadulkovich has shown flashes uh of being a good goalender. Um, and yeah, I I just I do think it’s a little I think the tandem is going to be better than what we saw after the Blackwood trade. um which is again not like the bar is pretty low after that trade but um I think I think there’s a chance that Nadulkovich can kind of bounce back and or even if he’s kind of similar to what the Sharks have if the Sharks kind of get similar numbers that’s still an improvement over what we saw last year especially at the end of the season which uh really sunk the Sharks just the goalending just being so inconsistent or just uh flatout poor to be honest. So, uh, we’re going to look at the new forwards in Godet and, uh, Kurishv here in just one second. All right, before we continue, do of course want to thank you for making Locked on Sharks your first listen. When you’re done with this show, go check out the Locked on HL podcast. uh we are in the middle of the uh you know off seasonason right here at least all the offseason transactions but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop uh we’ll still be doing covering the biggest stories throughout the NHL all off season long so make sure uh you’re following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. All right, uh Kurishv. So let’s start with with Kurv here. So, the uh former Chicago Blackhawk um Kurishv is a pretty interesting dude just because of a little bit of or um just kind of the his story and the guys he’s played with and stuff like that. Like he’s played with some some big names here um and has produced as well. So, uh Kersha, former fourthround pick uh of Chicago in the 2018 draft. um played with the uh in the queue uh uh with the rampetss or ramparts, sorry, excuse me. Uh 6′ 190 lbs left-handed shot. Um broke into the NHL in the 2220 or is it the 20 2021 season, the the bubble year, uh where he played 54 games there, and then has been with Chicago this full time. And um last season really really kind of was a down year especially compared to what we saw from him the last the couple seasons before. Um so uh Kersev uh pulling up his numbers from this year. Uh again not not the greatest numbers but there’s you know there’s some hope there and that’s all we’re asking for right now is some hope. Um so he’s got sign a one-year deal at 1.2 2 million. Last year had 51 games, seven goals, seven assists, 54 shots on goal. Played 1343 time on ice. Uh 4318 Cory4 goals for 29.17%. Like wo woof in that that department, right? But again, the previous years, uh Kersev, he 18 goals, 36 assists with 54 points. granted playing uh top pairing minute or top line minutes where he was playing 19 minutes a night. Uh year before that, you know, nine goals, 16 assists, 25 total points in 70 games, also around kind of 17 and a half minutes. So the I think the expectation is to be more of a kind of that 17 minute a night type of player um with and hopefully kind of in the like 25 to 30 point range for for San Jose. But um looking at at Kersev’s numbers this last season uh 23rd percentile player the goals above replacement really like just just horrible kind of uh goal luck to be honest. And um the shooting percentage was okay. Uh it was at 13% which is um kind of similar to what we saw the year before when he scored 18 goals. He just wasn’t taking enough shots. So, um, curious to see there what happens if he shoot just shoots more. Uh, projective war over the last three seasons, 22%. Um, and it’s funny cuz the war actually increased a little bit despite uh from the 23 24 season to 24-2 despite not seeing the offense of numbers there. Um, has played solid competition. Uh, played with with solid teammates. Um, has does a good job of drawing penalties as well. Um, but you know, I think the the finishing and the the finishing is very good. The goals maybe not where you want them to be. So, um, and the like I said, the ice time really fell apart this this last season with him. So, um, utilize as an average top six two-way forward this year where he was kind of getting more defensive, uh, zone starts because again, the Blackhawks not the best team. um and and did okay with with some of that with that as well. So, um I do think for him out of like between him and God, I do think he’s got a a better chance to play top six minutes because I think he’s a guy who um has shown to play with good players, right? Playing with Conor Bard, playing with uh Taylor Hall, etc., etc. I do think he’s a guy who can uh maybe fill that role a little bit better and I wouldn’t be surprised if he at least gets a run at Will Smith’s wing to to kind of start things here. So, uh and then the last player that the Sharks uh acquire or signed uh is Adam Goddet. Uh so, Godette is a former uh fifth round pick of the Vancouver Conucks from the 2015 season. uh bounced around a little bit, played with the Canucks. Um then he also played with the Blackhawks, played with the Sens, played with the Blues, back with the Sens. Like he’s a guy who’s has bounced around here uh the past couple seasons. Uh but really broke out this last season, at least when it came to a scoring production. Um, so, uh, looking at God’s numbers here. So, uh, as a player who’s, uh, 6’1 and 187 pounds, he’ll be 29 for this season. Signed a two-year deal at $2 million AAV. Uh, 81 games, 19 goals, seven assists, 90 shots on goal. So, that right there is a little bit of a red flag. Uh, shooting 21%. Don’t know how. Yeah, I don’t know if that’s going to be a uh very replicable thing there. Uh also playing 1025 time on ice. So he definitely made the use of of his time on the ice. Uh co4 50.91% goals for 62.75% which is absolutely ridiculous. Um got it again 76 percentile player as a fourth. So he’s a very good fourthline player and that’s where he kind of set in. 77% offense, 68 percentile defensively. Um, played on the power play. Didn’t get him a shorthand time, but I have a feeling the Sharks are going to give him a run on on on the PK. Uh, especially if uh he feels like a a PK, like a short-handed king gold type of scorer. So, um, 77th percentile wore the past three seasons. Uh, 90th percentile finishing though. that scoring right there is like that his ability to finish uh something I mean the Sharks definitely could use but I I do think uh not realistic for him to continue to keep those numbers up. So uh utilize as an sheltered forward where he got low quality competition minutes um but did get good offensive zone starts and made the most of them. So I think for Godette like the expectation that he’s going to come in and and put up 15 20 goals little bit tougher but I do think he is a big improvement on guys like uh Grenlin or good Barkley Goodro or Dandria and I you know probably might even get a run on the third line here too just because of the depth of the Sharks. though. Uh I do think he’s a a good bottom six forward who does have like legitimately has scoring pop here as we just saw. Uh again, I don’t think he’s going to be shooting 21% this year. Um but if he can, you know, uh if if he can be a a guy who can pop some shorthanded goals and and get a chance to do that. Um, and if the shooting percentage gets down to again like, you know, if it’s like 15%, which would still be above his career average, uh, I would definitely take that, uh, for for the Sharks who, uh, need some more juice on the bottom six here. So, uh, yeah, that’s those are the new guys here right now. So, um, that’s going to be it for me today. We’ll be back tomorrow. Uh I think there’s a a rookie face off or something like that. So uh yeah, we’ll be talking about the prospect scrimmage tomorrow. So make sure you guys are following along wherever you get podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. Absolute no on leddy
Still waiting on Grier announcing Jack Roslovic and making a trade for Nemec or Byram
We are good off that
The Leddy thing could happen, but the Sharks shouldn’t burn the #1 waiver priority lightly. They had already burned it on Goodrow when Fabbro hit waivers last year. Columbus got Fabbro with their top-5 waiver position and now resigned him for 4 more years.
I still think it’s better to take the Price contract to get to the floor and make acquisitions in-season when underperforming teams decide to tank and cut bait.
I like the Klingberg acquisition and hope he stays healthy and can munch minutes. Shrewd Mike Grier kind of deal.
2025-2026
