BREAKING: Washington Capitals Select Lynden Lakovic 27th Overall, UNICORN With Tom Wilson Comp?

the pick is in the Washington Capitals have made their first selection in the 2025 NHL draft i’m Rachel Donner joined now by Dan Holm of Locked on Capitals and the Washington Capitals have selected winger Lynden Lacovic with the 27th overall pick and uh what do you think about this pick just first impressions well I think the Capitals were looking to to go for a forward and I think that he is going to be a good option kind of a a prototyp a prototypical Capital if that is the case 6’4 200 lb so a bigger guy and I think will probably grow into that frame uh a talented playmaker and passer who makes every puck touch meaningful uh kind of a finesse player uh seen kind of as a power forward i think that he will be the answer a leftwing is what he plays and I think will fit in very well with the Capitals in the future yeah one of the things that impresses me about his game is the way he’s developed over the last couple of years and I think that shows that he’s very coachable that he’s added different elements to his game that maybe he didn’t have before so he can be a play driver but he can also uh develop his two-way game a little bit and uh you know he also had that shot as a good foundation is that something that the Capitals are especially looking for in their prospects it is and uh Spencer Carberry is really good with working with a younger player so when he’s ready for the NHL uh he is going to have a great coach and uh just working on his game to kind of tie in with what you’re talking about a strong skater uh moves smooth up the ice getting up to top speed and just a few strong strides so a powerful skater a great shot a lot of upside there i think that uh the Capitals hit it out of the park with their number 27 pick
yeah I think a lot of boards had him going sooner do you think he got a steal in this one i do I think that there were other options but I think the Capitals kind of had him circled as a player that they were interested in i know that ideally they were kind of looking for a defenseman best case scenario but it’s always important to draft the best possible player available not draft by position and for the Capitals I think he was the best player available at number 27 yeah and I think you know obviously being as tall as he is he’s going to have to fill out his frame a little bit to kind of withstand the rigors of the NHL and you know I think he can do that but also at the same time sometimes these guys that are that tall take a while to grow into themselves and I I think though with the Caps he has that kind of runway uh definitely you saw that with Tom Wilson as well um when he first entered the league he was not nearly as big as he is today kind of had to grow into that frame uh I think that Ryan Leonard another Capital uh is another guy that’s going to be growing into his frame as well so you take a look at it some big frames out there Tom Wilson uh Ryan Leonard um you take a look at Alexe Prous Pierre Luke Dubois uh that there are some big players and some definite tough uh characters if you will on the Capitals team yeah I know when I took a look at him in draft prep the Tom Wilson comparison definitely came up and I think you know with Tom Wilson in the waning years of his career to have another similar type player in the system will be really good
uh definitely and uh it’s not just his size there’s a lot of other things uh that kind of have similarities I guess I would say to Tom Wilson um he’s a great skater as well so I think that uh you know a great prospect you know a lot of these players are quite a ways out uh he’s not going to be NHL ready uh tomorrow shall we say but I think that with development uh hitting the gym hard nutrition those kind of things like you were saying can grow into his frame and at some point can be an elite player for the Caps
yeah well for more on Lyndon Lakovic here is Locked on NHL Prospects is Lynon Lakovic the most overlooked skilled player in the entire 2025 NHL draft i’m Sebastian Hy from Locked on NHL Prospects ready to give you a breakdown of his game lakovic is a 6’4 190 pound leftot winger playing in Moose Jaw in the WHL here this campaign where he scored 27 goals and 58 points in just 47 games he also only put up four penalty minutes this is a skilled winger rather than a power forward no matter what the 6’4 frame might have to say about it it’s the handling skill the playmaking the intelligence and the goal scoring that make him so special rather than any special physicality if given the leeway to just be that skilled player he could be a Quinton Biffield Dylan Cousin style of top six NHL player who influences the game around him with high-end intelligence playing a top six role in three to four years time in the NHL for more on him and all things NHL draft make sure to follow us at locked on NHL prospects and for more on Lynden Lacavic and the rest of the Washington Capitals picks check out Locked on Capitals on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts part of the Locked On podcast network your team every day

The Washington Capitals have added an intriguing blend of size and skill to their prospect pool, selecting Lynden Lakovic with the 27th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft! Caps fans will be reminded of Tom Wilson with his huge frame and offensive upside.

Lakovic, a towering 6’4″, 190-pound left-shot winger from the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL), is renowned for his excellent skating for a big man, offensive instincts, and a dangerous shot. He led his team with 27 goals and 58 points in an injury-shortened 47 games, showcasing high-end scoring potential. While still refining his physical consistency, Lakovic’s ability to drive play and create offense with his size and mobility makes him a high-upside pick.

  1. Great selection I had him going mid teens did not see him getting to us. Had the pleasure to watch him live at the chl prospects game he was a standout in that game who had a strong possession game and stood out in corner battles
