THESE FORMER TOP PROSPECTS JUST GOT TRADED: Sharks & Devils Trade (Thomas Bordeleau, Shane Bowers)
So, we have ourselves a trade between the New Jersey Devils and the San Jose Sharks. These two teams getting back at it again after what was a stressful Teeo Meyer trade situation all those years ago. Meer, Zetterland, Makamadullan, all these guys swapping around. I guess they really like each other because they’re making another trade here today that both teams have officially confirmed it is a one for one deal. Two former top prospects of their organizations being swapped in Shane Bowers and Thomas Borderlow. Now, here’s the thing about these guys. On the surface, and really when you dive deeper into it, this is not really that big of a trade. It’s just a trade between two guys that were AHL caliber players. But because of the fact that they were former top prospects, I do still hold these names in reverence and I do think that there is a relevant reason to talk about him, especially Thomas Borderlow. Going over to the New Jersey Devils organization, Borderlow, as you can see from the picture, was a former Michigan Wolverine. He was a top prospect in the 2020 NHL entry draft. 23 years old, 510, 174, a left-handed center left wing who at the time of his draft year was playing in the NTDP. He was a point- perame player who inevitably found himself as an over point- perame player with the Michigan Wolverines in his very first season. and the Michigan teams in this time. I mean, you take a look at the rosters. You take a look at the guys who were making themselves known. Mattie Beneers, Brendan Brisson, Luke Hughes, Borderlow Johnson, Owen Power was over here, Nick Blankenberg, Mackie Samoskevich. You go over to the prior season and you will note that Borderlow was the top point producer on his squad with 30 points in 24 games. Now, this was a really difficult year because of COVID and everything, but still Borderlow was out there with Johnson, with Beneers. These guys were all top prospects, and it’s why I think Tomas Borderlow was taken so high in the draft. It’s why a lot of folks were super high on him. The reason he had slipped to round number two, though, is because of the fact that he is only 5’10” and at the time of the draft, he was only 5’9″. Read the scouting report here. While clocking in at just 5’9, Borderlow uses exceptional speed and puck protection habits to make an impact in the offensive zone. He is at his best carrying the puck on the perimeter, scanning the defense, waiting for a passing opportunity to open up, and striking with extreme precision to a waiting teammate. This guy was a cerebral playmaking machine, and we had seen that in spades with the University of Michigan Wolverines. inevitably he made the San Jose Sharks at the end of the 22 season and he had five points in eight games with San Jose in that little stint there. Unfortunately though for Bordello as his career progressed with the San Jose Sharks, he was never fully able to capitalize on this momentum as the next few years saw him bouncing up and down with the Barracuda and the Sharks. Sure, his Barracuda numbers were good. I mean, 41 points in 65 games played two seasons ago, not bad at all. That dipped to 25 points in 35 games the previous year because of the games played being a little lower. And then this year, he had 38 points in 59 games and only one San Jose Sharks game there. It just didn’t seem like Borderlow at 23 years old was going to be a consistent San Jose Sharks option. He wasn’t really fully able to take that step. So heading over to a New Jersey Devils team where Luke Hughes is going to be there too. Obviously there is going to be some connection there and hopefully it allows Borderlow a little bit more of an easier transition into the National Hockey League because both of these guys were top tier point producers for Michigan once upon a time. You also had yourselves Shane Bowers heading over to the San Jose Sharks. 25 years old from Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is 6’2 185. So the Sharks are getting a little bit of an upgrade here on speed. Bowers was a former top round pick in the 2017 NHL entry draft by the Ottawa Senators. Taken in his 1617 year out of the Waterl Blackhawks in the USHL. He was a big power center who had himself that dangerous shot which is why he was taken as a firstround talent. He inevitably rounded out as a top scorer with the Boston University University Terrier system. That’s what it was. I had to think for a second there cuz I saw Colorado Eagles and I was like, “Wait, Boston Eagles? No, that’s the other one. It is not the BEu team.” So Bowers was there in the NCAA. He then spent a lot of time just rotating up and down in the NHL and AHL versions of whatever teams it was that he was on. Colorado, Providence, New Jersey, Udica. He never really was able to take that next step and he is more so of an AHL middle tier piece now rather than a full-time NHL capable talent. I mean, does the guy have an NHL point? Uh, one game played with Colorado, the Avalanche here, eight games played with the Devils here, four games played with the Devils here, he has no points. Oh boy. Yeah. 13 games in the NHL level, zero points. I think honestly this is just a change of scenery trade that is necessary for both players and potentially both teams. I don’t think the San Jose Sharks are getting an NHL talent out of Bowers, but then again, Thomas Borderlow wasn’t really showing all too well either. Hopefully going over to New Jersey can revive his career to a meaningful capacity and get him back on the right track because he is a little bit younger than Bowowers is here. Borderlow 23 years old. Bowers is turning 26 at the end of July. So, with all that in mind, I want you to let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. How do you feel about this trade here? Both teams fan bases between the Devils and the Sharks seem very lukewarm on this move, which indicates to me that it’s probably a fair trade. But it doesn’t change the fact that both of these guys were top prospects, that Bowowers was a firstround pick, that Borderlow was an underrated Michigan top scoring star, that a lot of folks were actually ranking a bit higher here. He was ranked as high as 23 by Elite Prospects. And even in the scouting report guide that they have for this player, I mean, let’s just go out there and read this here. They are super high on Thomas Borderlow here with all of the skill and the point production ability. There was so much to like even though he was a little bit smaller there. So I think there is a lot to like out of Borderlow. I’m excited to see what he’s capable of doing with the New Jersey Devils and with Luke Hughes. Of course though I understand it’s not guaranteed that he ends up becoming anything. Bowowers on the other hand, if he maybe gets a cup of coffee with San Jose, maybe gets his first NHL point, that would be cool. The Sharks are building a really nice team. They have a lot of young talent that happens to be bigger and more physical. Bowers can bring those elements to the San Jose Barracuda and the Sharks. Honestly, if it was like 2018, 2019, I’d be really, really stoked for this trade if I was a San Jose Sharks fan. Just Shane Bowers and the profile that he had back in the day was quite noteworthy. And I definitely remember a lot of Sens fans being optimistic on him what, like five, six, seven years ago. So without further ado, let me know your thoughts in the comments section below about this trade, about these two guys getting sent over to their new teams. I hope you enjoyed this British roll 9 and bye.
