Jake Oettinger Responds to Pete DeBoer Relationship After Being Pulled in WCF vs. Edmonton Oilers
[Applause] when Pete pulls you in that game did that moment surprise you and how did you just kind of process how everything unfolded yeah um you know I mean obviously wasn’t expecting that to happen but um yeah it was it was surprising um but you know the reality is if you know I make one or two of those saves then I’m still playing in the game so you know the only way I’m looking at it is you know how can I get better from that how can I can um you know make those those saves that I made all playoffs um how do I make them in that game at the start of the game give give the guys a chance to get their feet under them and as a goalie you know that’s your job so I got to do better than that what’s that experience like after that having to sit next to it there on the broadcast i know he talked about that was that that had to be yeah I was on this I was on the uh the screen a lot more than I thought I should be i don’t know why they kept showing me i’m like I haven’t moved in in a half hour so um yeah it’s just you know sucks like you know it’s um it’s embarrassing it’s uh you know yeah anytime you anytime you get pulled doesn’t matter if it’s playoffs or if it’s regular season you just want to go right off the ice and crawl under your bed and not talk to anyone so especially in a moment like that it’s it’s really embarrassing yeah pete said you were dealing with a little bit of an illness how much did that affect you kind of throughout the playoffs i don’t think very much yeah just you know for the first couple games of the the conference final but I mean everyone I’d rather be sick than what some of these guys are going through so just Yeah no excuse there and then how was your balance i know you love to play how was your balance this year and in the playoffs going optional skates and taking some days off when you felt like you needed to yeah it was this this is as healthy as I’ve ever felt um I feel great i feel like I could I could play 40 more games um so I think the you know Reer and our strength staff you know I think they did a great job of you know telling me when to you know take my foot off the gas and when we have time to work and can put some good work in so I think as I get older now that’s kind of what it’s all about just you got to you know you got to work your ass off still but it’s got to be doing the right things in in a smart way too game five obviously emotions are really high especially when you get eliminated pete said he believes in you and he’s no bigger fan but he did point out that you lost 6% against Edmonton and that kind of played into his reasoning so I guess as you think about all the things that have been said is there any concern about your relationship moving forward working with him i mean I think I think for me it’s just um the whole experience I think just going to learn from it and it’s going to help me grow and be a better person be a better goalie um you know my job is to stop the puck and you know I feel like I’m one of the best in the world when I’m playing well doing that so that’s all I’m going to focus on there’s no all the extra stuff’s just extra stuff to me so I just you know if I go out there next year and I’m the best goalie in the world it doesn’t matter you know one of you guys could be coaching and it doesn’t matter like it’s so yeah just try to be the best I can be learn from learn from the experience and go from there uh your your position is a little bit different than the rest of the team but how do you get to the next step as a team yeah I think um it’s a good question i think um you know we have I mean we have it all in that room um so it’s and you know the only thing I really can do is stop more pucks well I think for me you know I played some of the best hockey in my life in the first two rounds and I felt like I’ve done that the last three playoff rounds but then it’s you know that just shows you goalending in playoffs like you play play the best hockey your career for two rounds and then you don’t have a great round and you suck again so it’s it’s uh you know how do I how do I keep that going like how do I get over that hump personally whether it’s I mean I didn’t feel like fatigued but I mean as you gets going on like how do you stay sharp that late into the season that played that many games um so that’s what I’m going to focus on whether I need to you know skate more skate less train more train less kind of figure it out from there but I think you know I feel like I’m like half of what I’m going to be one day as a far as a goalie so I think I’m Yeah it doesn’t even feel like close to where I can get and it’s up to me to to change that and put the work in to get there is it a weird job i mean because you look at Carolina or Colorado or Winnipeg and they’re just you’re like “Well those are great teams and you’re they’re all thinking “Oh we suck.” Yeah yeah it’s exactly yeah yeah it’s tough like and goalending especially i mean there’s no there’s no other position like it in the world so I don’t know why I decided to play goalie but here we are uh but yeah that’s how it goes and I think I think it’s good though i think the you know when you have a team like this and you know you want expectations like you want you want the pressure cuz it means you’re doing something good you’re people feel like you should win so I’d rather you know put in all this work and be disappointed because we gave it a chance than be on a team that isn’t even in the mix so it’s a it’s a great privilege to have and you know it’s going to it’s going to take every guy coach management you know everyone to you know look at themselves and say “What can I do better to you know hopefully get back to that position?” And then when we get that opportunity again what can we do to to break through jake you talk about the disappointment can you pull from any experience throughout your career going down to the youth ranks where you’ve maybe felt some level of disappointment and responded yeah I think every year of my life I think you know I’ve haven’t won the Stanley Cup or the NCAA tournament so every year of my life has been disappointment and I’ve bounced back and I’ve I’ve learned from it and I got better and I think you know when you go through you know whatever in life or you know bad stuff happens to people but life is tough and it just makes it when you finally get that win it makes it all worth it so I think you know hopefully whether it’s next year whether it’s 5 years from now I’m looking at you guys we just won the Stanley Cup and I said “Remember all that BS that was all for this.” So yeah um we talk a lot in the season about how playing your position is heart mental mhm do you think that you know it’s 82 games just to even have the privilege to go for the Stanley Cup and then it’s however many more in the in the postseason do you think that it might be more about like mental sharpness and acuity when by the time you hit the third round yeah I think that definitely is is a huge part of it i think Yeah like physically you know my body feels great but you know if you’re if you’re not all there it’s who cares what body you’re playing in so I think that’s u a great point and you know I haven’t done a lot of like mental kind of training or whatever you want to call it but I think you know that might be something I should look into or all the guys you know it’s we’re always trying to find ways to get better and you know I mean I got to change something if if we’re going to get through so we’ll do two more questions for Jake we have Tyler on deck jake you’ve uh faced 445 shots this playoffs like 70 something more than the second most is there a change in like your mentality heading into a game where you know you’re probably going to have about 30 shots on both i think it’s I’m fired up for it it’s great it’s like I’d rather that than you know five shots in the first so it’s fun gets you into the game and you know that’s the thing it’s like that’s why I hate like stats and or analytics and that’s I mean I don’t hate it but like there’s teams are so different like 30 shots is and then if you’re asked the goalie you’d be like yeah well wasn’t that tough and then compared to a guy that had 16 and you know 10 of them are great A’s and the other four were through screens and so it’s yeah I don’t know why I started rambling about that but yeah Jake you you we’ve talked a lot about what goalies you’ve worked worked with coaches you worked with Scott went specifically how did your relationship develop with Casey on and off the ice this season yeah yeah i mean like I’m like the luckiest guy in the world with these goalies that I’ve been able to play with so it’s I mean he’s you know in my opinion he was one of the best goalies in the league this year too so he uh if he wasn’t signed here for two more years there’d be a lot of teams calling him I think so we’re very lucky to have him and he’s just I mean there’s nothing better than when you feel like you and your goalie partner are really like in it together and like if I make a big save he’s the first guy that’s pounded his blocker on the boards and he knows vice versa so he’s just he’s a great dude he works his butt off he you know has grinded his whole career to to be in the NHL and he’s a world class goalie that probably should be playing a lot more than he is so and off the ice I mean he like he likes golf so that means I’m going to like him so he’s a great guy thanks Jake yep Hope Jake goes to Edmonton
I dnt like the Stars but now I like Otter. Total BS Jake! Stupid move to take ya out. Smh
probably overplayed him. desmith is good and should have been used more this year to keep otter more fresh
i don't think oettinger is all that great to be honest…stop the puck and do your job…
DeBoer needs to go. Dude can’t win a cup.
As an Edmontonian and obvious Oilers fan, I was baffled and honestly irritated Jake got pulled for the simple fact it wasn’t deserved, and thought through this whole series DeBoer was a jackass. The comment “Does anyone here think if Connor McDavid was getting carried off the ice it wouldn’t have been a 5 minute major” was the first stupid comment for me. Hintz totally dove on that, and there’s NO WAY CMcD would’ve come out of a conference series game for a little slash on the shin. Jake played well, and those first two goals he had NO teammates around him playing D at all. To me DeBoer realized this was just a different Pilers team than last year, he had no answer for that, and he panicked and made an ass of himself. He put BOTH of his goalies and the whole team in a shitty spot when he pulled that crap. Jake shows a lot of class here, and didn’t deserve that.
The only way Dallas lost against the trashcan oil stain is if the league forced the L …. same as last year. Dallas owned them in game 1, then just magically forgot how to play hockey 🤦🤷…. nah… the nhl just wants McOverrated and princess dirty Draisaitl in the finals again so they can lose again. This series was so painful to watch as a hockey fan.
the only hockey jersey i have has the number 29 on it.
3:39 to 3:42 😂 This guy is awesome! Anybody wants to be a coach they can do it!
Played poorly in the series. Never a doubt the Oilers could score on him.
this dood is mature and introspective…… im a fan gl2 him
DeBoer might as well have punched the team owner in the face with a move like that. It’s amazing what desperation some will reach when they know they’re in over their heads.
Good luck coaching your kid’s high school team next year, Pete.
I love watching Dallas in shambles, this is fun!
I always respected Patrick Roy for saying f you to the Canadians. Not for dislike of the Canadians but for the disrespect. Ott's needs to do the same, let them know you won't be treated that way.
Thats not what he's thinking. State of Hockey!
Another Oiler fan here. Wow, Oettinger is twice the man DeBoer is. DeBoer panicked and lost his mind when he pulled Oetter. I've seen the Oilers blow MANY two goals leads and there was still 52 minutes left. It has been said over and over, a two goal lead in the NHL is nothing anymore.
Team played soft, not Jake.
Wow he really stayed calm and said all the right things. Mad respect for a young guy to face the heat with his head held high and didnt blame anyone and said he will learn from it. I think it was pretty low the way he was thrown under the bus by the coach still. The ups and downs in the NHL playoffs must be so intense and I wonder how any player keeps it together. I mean on top of all the pressure you also have to perform at your best with thousands of people in the building watching you and millions on TV. Only a small percentage of Hockey plays are good enough to play in the NHL.
Good kid.
Deboer made the whole thing about him. No class. He should have known better. That was a bad bad move.
Peter DeBoer has been fired!
Ray Ferraro should be getting a demotion too for his take on the move by Debor. I don’t think Ray is horrible but I’m a little sick of it being either him or Enzo every single game. Miss the days of John Kelly and Bill Clement
A class act. Pete DeBoer is an idiot and deserved to be fired. Glad to see him gone.
Otter was the reason they were in the WCF. Pulling him was a major mistake and probably cost DeBoer is job.
This is why Dallas with him in net always can contend. Level headed. Leader. Work Ethic. Mature perspective. Steady hand in net night in, night outm
I liked DeBoer but he lost me after what he pulled and said. I honestly thought Pete would put in him back in Period 2 with the message to everyone being understood. They win and who knows.
Deboer deserved to be fired!! You don't disrespect players in today's NHL like that.
Jake still has a job and Pete doesnt.
DeBoer was right in pulling Oettinger, he couldn't stop a beach ball all series long he had no choice…look at Edmonton Skinner been pulled so many times & look where they are now, Cup final
Otter you're a class act we wiuld love u in toronto!
1 year more with that coach and after this Dallas Feanchise Goalie got either benched or how he act through him on under the bus more to prove that point.
Hw took full responsibility as a goalie shkuld be if you lose and not talkijf anything bead to his coach.
