MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 4, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
just about ready to go. And now here’s the starter for the Cubs, Daniel Palencia. Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there.
Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one.
Now up for St. Louis, Brendan Donovan. That’s outside. So, we’re underway on a day made for baseball, the 4th of July. just off the inside edge. And that’s in for a strike. Knocks that one away and will do it again. Swing and a ball popped in the air and it drops in. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Pretty good fast ball location down and in on the corner, but that was just a nice job to handle it and hit it hard. Very tough spot to get the barrel to most of the time though. Mason Win stands in now and watches strike one. Win goes 5′ 11 in 22 years old and he was a second round pick in 2020. Come on, Daniel. Fouled off and they’ll do it again.
A defensive swing right there. Some cheese on the inside part of the plate. Bet the hands are still stinging after that one. The short stop takes the ball.
Nobody out. Runner at first. Strike him out. Ball.
Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Right side. Suzuki has a beat on it. And there’s one away. Batting third. The first base.
Here’s a Cardinals lineup now. Burlson
and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport. Mason Win.
Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Hey, double Alec Burlson batting with one down. Takes a strike. Late swing. Fouled to the left. just outside. Ball one. Really good take especially with two strikes. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Donovan the base runner at first with one out. Foul ball still a one and two count. And the right-hander deals. That one ripped back there. And that one’s gone into the bleachers. That’ll fire up the dugout. His 11th of the year. Just like that, they move in front. It’s two nothing. That was blasted.
Absolutely. No doubt off the bat. Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time. Took a direct path to the ball. Excellent extension and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. Base is empty. One away. Here’s Nolan Gorman swang and a ball popped up. This one a mile high. Horner. He’s there. He’s got it. And there are two down. The left fielder Lars Nbar.
Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals, that one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Two out space is empty. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Going to count one and two.
I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go.
That’s down and in. A slider missed.
That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. Two outs. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two runs for St. Louis on this blast and it’s two zip. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Wrigley Field and on the mound today, Riley O’Brien. Tell us about him in that sub3 ERA. Singy.
Well, anytime you can keep your ERA under three, you’re doing a lot of things right. And you’re putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well. And he’s doing tremendous out there on the mound. Every time he gets the ball, you expect him to go out there and dominate. And that’s what he’s been to this point. We’ll see how he is today. Gets out of the way. That’s ball one. And that one is in for a strike. Good pitch. Ripped to short. Sends it across to first. One up, one down. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup.
A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus in half. Boogie swinging the bat really well. Nine home runs last month. I’m sure he was itching to try to get to 10. So take that as motivation coming into this new month. They better deal with him very carefully. Here’s Kyle Tucker. Not only can he hit the cover off the ball, he’s got a great eye as well. And it’s fouled away. One out. Base is empty. Grounded to Gorman. Gorman throws on to first and a couple of quick outs. The right fielder Seya Suzuki. Seiya. Suzuki. The next Cub to hit. He set a new career high in home runs this year. And Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible. Now that’s a little bit low. Up and in. And it’s two and 0, man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a lowend fast ball for some pitchers. That one to first. Burlson. And the Cubs go one, two, three. Cubs are down quietly. They trail things here. Two nothing. Second inning, set to go. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Sajay. Valencia back to work. Ball one, no strikes, swing, and a miss.
Really consistent release point. and he’s been able to pitch up and down and have excellent command in both locations.
Time to check on our umpires. Earl Hendrickx calling balls and strikes.
Yeah, well-liked umpire Boo. Pretty consistent with his zone. So, if you’re familiar with him and how he works, you won’t get too surprised by anything. Sometimes he’ll give a little bit off the corner, but nothing too crazy at all. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and one away. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. Jose Fair in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Check swing and he went and now it’s even one and one. Strike way high.
That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by to the right side. He steps out of the bag. Two up, two down. Batting the catcher, Pedro. And here’s the catcher, Pedro
Pahes. Just missed. And that’s way high. And now 2 and 0. He swings and fouls one off. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Two down on. We got a full count and a foul ball. He stays alive. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch.
I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. This one high in the air to left center hat and puts the squeeze on that one. And that’s the third out. No runs, no hits, no errors. Now to the bottom of the second, it’s the Cardinals two and the Cubs nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom half of inning number two. Here’s the center fielder Pete Crow Armstrong swinging a foul. Out of play. And that is out of play. outside and the count is one and two. Right side Burlson. Steps on first for the out. Batting fit. The shorts stop. Gensby Swanson. Swanson digs in. on the ground to the left
and foul ball. Hey,
that front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So, you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing play.
One down, base is empty. And that’s in the dirt. Two and two. swinging a ground ball and it’s through for a hit. So, a man aboard now with one away batting six, the first baseman, Michael. And now here is Michael Bush singing when the year’s over he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. And the first pitch misses for ball one. A lot of pitchers have caught on to how good he is hitting the first pitch. Smart to avoid the zone right there. Over to first and he saved.
I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter not a power guy. So you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score on a ball in the gap and a seed into center. That’s a base hit. Throw into third and the throws off line. Safe at third. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Absolutely punished that pitch. Wasn’t fooled in the slightest. 109 off the bat.
I think that means you put a pretty good swing on it. So, two in scoring position with one out. And now the batter is Carson Kelly. First pitch just misses. And another ball. And you got to wonder with first base open, one out, is he going to get a pitch to hit? Come back to the mound. Throw to first in time. Batting the second baseman, Nicoer. So here’s her now singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. Yeah, that’s a little bit high.
He’s got a base open. So, the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked. Right through there for a strike.
Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Next offering is in for a strike.
One, two. And that’s outside. That’s too low. But the count is filled up. Matt Shaw in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. The kick the 3-2. Base hit right field. One runs in. The second run scores. We are tied at two. Well, there you go with the RBI machine. Another clutch run scoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. Matt Shaw, the next come to hit. Poorer on the goal. Strike in there. Throw there. Safe. Having a good lead is so key when you’re stealing bases. even if you’ve got great speed. But if you don’t have great speed, but can get an extended lead and a good jump, you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it. That’s a nice job right there. And the one in the air out to center and that’ll fall for a base hit. Porter comes around to score and it’s an RBI single. It’s 32. That was a great job of letting that runner steal second base. Get in the scoring position. Come through with the base knock. You add a run in half. Up to 0 for one. He grounded out in his first at that one is downstairs. Ball one. smoked on the ground to second. Gorman throws on to first and that is that. Three runs for him here and they move ahead. We play two full. It’s the Cubs three and the Cardinals two here at Wrigley Field. New inning getting started. And now Victor Scott, if there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. Foul ball there. That one fouled off. Ripped on a line to center. Makes the grab on the run. One up. One down. Wow. He looked like he was running before the ball was hit. Didn’t have much time as that was a hard hit liner, but a nice job of covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Donovan in the box now. No balls in a strike.
No balls. One strike. And that one sliced fouled. gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. That one misses. Yeah, the count one and two. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Right through there. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Oh man, just locked him up with that slider even though it caught a lot of the zone. And I think that tells you all you need to know about what he was looking for in the box. And it clearly was not that pitch. Win takes the ball as he stands in for the second time. And that one hammered. That’s back there. And it’s into the bleachers. Out of here. It’s his eighth home run of the year. It’s 33. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Just an excellent swing all the way around and it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive short to the baseball, squared it up, and the backspin carried it out of here. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. Now a screamer into the outfield. Half makes the grab and that’s the inning. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. We’re tied now with three apiece. You’re dialed into the show. Back here at the friendly confines, bottom of the inning. And the batter now, Kyle Tucker. Tucker. It’s
been a rough start on the mound for this guy. this third inning. So important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this round.
In the air, left field down the line. Nukebar makes the grab. One down. Now batting right fielder. And next for the Cubs, Seiya Suzuki delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. and a base hit. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Just so sound in his mechanics against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through
the middle of the field. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Pete Crow Armstrong. And that’s the inside edge. And that is ball one. O’Brien checks on first. Two balls, no strikes to count.
Suzuki leads off first with one away. Ball
in the dirt, but kept close.
3 0 knee high. That’s in for a strike. And ball four, two aboard. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast. Two on, one out. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. The shorts stop takes a ball. Way to lay off that pitch down. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Next offering is in for a strike. One out. Runners at first and second. line and that’s a base hit. Brown’s third headed for the plate. He’ll score. It’s an RBI single. It’s 43. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on the line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did, and he did it perfectly. Now here is Michael Bush. One for one with a single so far. Lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. New car settles under it. Drops into the glove. Run attacks from third. Throw is offline and he scores. It’s 53. Oh, that’s a quality at bat right there. You know the situation. You need something in the air and deep enough and that’s exactly what he did. Good pass to the baseball. And now Carson Kelly and that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Two outs. Line drive. Base hit. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Nice line drive to the pole side right there. But he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that.
First and second, two outs. Nico her the next cub to hit in the dirt. One ball, no strike. in the dirt and two in scoring position now thanks to that wild pitch. He just hasn’t had it in this one. Been fighting himself out there and that’s just another example of it. We’ll see if he can find it at all while he’s still out there. Second and third, two down. And misses inside. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Swing and a miss. Looked off balance that time.
Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. That’s to third to Jay-Z. Zips it to first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Three innings complete. It’s the Cubs five and the Cardinals three. All set for the start of the inning. Now it’s the second baseman, Nolan Gorman. Gorman goes 6’1, 24 years old. a former first round pick back in 2018. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, the offense has gotten going and a pitcher wants to go out there, have a real quick inning, get those guys back into the dugout so those bats can stay hot and ball movement in the bullpen. Shota Ianaga up and throwing for manager Craig Council. Horton also getting ready. The 1-1 is fouled off. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball two. That one missed. Full count. Goes down looking. Here comes the manager out of the Cubs dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Daniel Palencia won’t go any further. And a decent effort considering he’s normally a reliever. Back with the new pitcher in a minute. Now pitching for
here comes a new arm for the Cubs. Show Imanaga number 18. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters.
I now up for St. Louis. Lars Nbar struck out swinging his first time. fast ball for a strike.
01 and that misses.
And the count even one and one.
One and one.
Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is fouled back. And that’s downstairs and outside in the air out towards left center. Carous it and there’s two down. Now batting the third baseman Thomas. Two down base is empty. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals. First pitch and he just misses. just missed.
Well, he looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. And that one is lifted in the air. Cro Armstrong brings it in for the third out. Ready to go. Bottom four. Now the third baseman, Matt Shaw. Ball one there. Action in the St. Louis bullpen. Andre Palante getting ready to go. Gray getting cranked up as well. Next offering is fouled back. Nope. Ball. And it’s even up. Two balls, two strikes. And it stays fair. That’s back to back singles for him. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch and that’s how you do it.
So up now for Chicago in half. That smashed towards center. Scott balls it in and there’s one away. Now batting the designated hitter, Kyle Tucker. So here’s Kyle Tucker now for two in this one. And there’s a ball. MVP MVP MVP MVP runn
Here goes the runner
swinging a foul straight back. Shaw leads off first with one away. Two and one.
This one in the dirt. Runner goes again on the ground to third throws to first. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion.
The right fielder Seya Suzuki. So digging in Seiya Suzuki one for two. The way these two teams have battled in this game, you know you need more. Got to continue to add runs if you’re going to get out of here with a win. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Runner at second. Two down. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Line and a base hit into right. Shaw coming home. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they’re up by three. Comes through with the RBI. textbook bat control right there. Got a pitch on the outside, saw it deep into the zone and just barrel it up. Went the other way for the knock. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Riley O’Brien departs. Got them some innings, but they didn’t come easy. New pitcher coming on and we’ll be back after a quick break. Now pitching for
new arm out of the bullpen number 49.
He’s been so good against lefties. Spons Pete Crow Armstrong the next Cub to hit. He’s 0 for one. There’s the strike. Called strike right there. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Ru takes off. Pitch misses. Throw to second. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Inning over and it could have been worse. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and they’ve doubled up. Now it’s 63. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here at Wrigley Field, top five, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Jose Fairine. Shota back to work. for me tries to hold up appeal to first and yes he offered at it and a foul ball. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Swings threw it and that’s a strike out. Now batting
and stepping in for the Cardinals. Pedro Pah fly to left his first time. And there’s a foul ball. There’s a swing in a miss. Oh, and two. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. That thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. Scott batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. Two down, nobody on. And we’re in the top of the fifth. and he chases that one below the zone. More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count in this situation. We’ll keep a close eye on his approach. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field. Cro Armstrong snags it and that is that. So no runs, no hits, no errors and no one left. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Cubs six and the Cardinals three. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Swanson stands in Swanson hit on the ground to the right side and that’s a fair ball. Now batting first baseman Michael
batt at first Michael Bush the next cub to hit. That’s off the inside corner. One and0. You know, these Cubs doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game, and the numbers back that up. Double- digit hits, and they’ve done a great job of avoiding the strikeout. Only one of them so far, which tells you a lot. Ball to strike. That’s down and in. Next offering in there for a strike and now two and two. Swanson aboard here at first with nobody out way inside and that he had two strikes on him and he hit him. Next to hit Carson Kelly, Carson Kelly. Fouled off down the right side. Come on. Line drive and a base hit. Swanson around third. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single. It’s seven to three. Picks himself up an RBI. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. First and second, no outs. Nicoer, the next Cub to hit. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. First and second, no outs. Last half of inning number five. Next offering is in for a strike. That one down the line and it goes just foul. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Fermine makes the grab. One away. Matt Shaw, the next cover hit hard. Base hit. Throw back in, holds the runner at third. Base is now loaded, only one away. So the batting order turns over. Digging in is the switch inning outfielder in half. 0 for three in this one. Right through there for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. Here’s the O2. Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. So they’re all loaded on Kyle digs in now. And that one sliced foul. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. That’s hard hit on the line. Nukebar makes the play and that is that. So one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now 73. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Top six. Now it’s the DH. Brendan Donovan. Go, please win. Swing and a ground ball out to Short. Whips it to first. Now one gone in the top of the six. Up next for the Cardinals, the shortstop.
Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Mason Win. He’s already homered in this game. We need this. And first pitch fast ball is in for a strike.
The Cubs leading by four and we’re the top half of the sixth. Next pitch misses outside. One and one. Just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count instead. It’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. The short stop takes a ball. Next offering is in for a strike.
Two and two outside. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Good pitch right there. I mean, he’s attacking a location that this guy at the plate tends to have trouble with and there’s just so much information in this day and age. sometimes too much information. But the guys that can take that information, process it, and then go out there, boo, and execute the pitch, go right after that hitter and get the result that they were anticipating. That’s really good pitching right there. And it’s a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together. Two down. Nobody on and down on strikes. It is a three up, three down inning. So they go quietly there. Hard of the order. 345 coming up. It’s the Cubs seven and the Cardinals three. Bottom of the six. Leading off Sea Suzuki. on the corner for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Movement in the bullpen for the Cardinals. Jojo Romero up and loosening in the pen. Next offering is fouled back. Suzuki checks his swing. Now it appeal to first. He did not go around. Come on. Fouls it off. Still one and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Breaking ball in there. Got him looking. And that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six.
Now comes fourhole hitter Pete Crow Armstrong. Armstrong
singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. And look out. That one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. The batter number seven.
And here comes Danby Swanson.
Three for three with three singles.
Swanson. Swanson started after it, tried to hold up. Now a look to first. That’s a swing according to umpire Woody Keller. Check on the runner. Cro Armstrong back in on a dive. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid.
That one missed. Remember Mark Katse, who was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. lead runner around second coming home. He will score. Relay throw to third and he’s out. Absolutely perfect execution of the relay right there to cut him down at third. And he probably should have shut it down at second base and been happy with the double, but it took a great play to get him. You just have to tip your cap. Michael Bush will hit next. In there at the knees for a strike. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night.
That is true. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. 02. Now he breaks his bat. Handles, throws to first. That’s the third out. So they get one run, one hit, no errors, and no one left on. We’re through six full. It’s the Cubs eight and the Cardinals three. Top of inning number seven. Here’s the second base, Nolan Gorman.
Gorman. That one’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. 0 and one. And that’s outside Chicago. The one two gets a piece and stays alive. Ball that’s in. That one misses and a full countdown. Count’s full. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Lars newbar getting ready to hit
Lars Newbar. Let’s go. That one finds the zone. Strike one. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole, he’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Make it four strikeouts in a row. Just cruising along.
Oh, there’s a three pitch strike out. He can do whatever he wants with the baseball right now. Thomas.
Here’s the third base, Thomas Sajay. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. And another doll. And that’s downstairs.
And that’s ball three. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. That pitch in for a strike. Three and one. 3-1 and he couldn’t come up with it. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So ball down the line or into the gap
will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Fall off foul. Two outs in the air right side. Suzuki makes a nice run of catch. The Cards leave one. can’t chip away at an 83 deficit. Now pitching.
We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Sunny Gray. He last pitched four days ago, so he should feel pretty fresh.
Now the Cubs catcher Carson Kelly. Carson Kelly. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. That one missing inside. Right through there for a strike. Next offering in there for a strike. Two balls, two strikes to count. And they’ll do it again. Still two and two after the foul ball. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Stays alive. Next pitch is downstairs. struck him out looking. Really good battle right there. And that final pitch probably could have gone either way. He was hoping to get ball four. Instead, the umpire rings him up for the backwards K. Nico her will come up to hit. just missed. Gray, he’s made a name for himself as a very effective reliever, but not really what you expect from a bullpen arm these days cuz he’s not out there racking up Ks. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. I think it’s the deception in his ability to change arm angles and slots and give hitters different looks within one at bat. They’re never able to get comfortable. When you only see him once, a lot of times he has success.
One down, base is empty. And that one clips the corner. Got to be clever, too, when you don’t have that lights out stuff. Right.
Absolutely. You got to know what you’re able to do. Instead of focusing on what that hitter strength is, stay with your strength and trust that you’ll come out on top.
Base is empty, one away here. Bottom of the seventh and that’s a strike out looking. That was pretty nasty. Thought they locked him up with the cutter on the outside right there and I got to think he was looking middle in because he just couldn’t pull the trigger. And
you know with two strikes, fast ball coming in, you got to be ready to swing it. That time it cut to the outside part of the plate and he just couldn’t pull the trigger.
Matt Shaw the next cub to hit. Fast ball is outside. Yeah, that’s in for a strike.
And a count is one and one. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and that keeps the inning going. Oh, this has been a really nice game at the plate for him. He looks locked in. Just kept it simple. played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. Here’s the left fielder, Ian Hap. That’s too low. Ball one. Shaw leads off first with two down to the inning. That missed. That’s a ball. Sunny Gray checks on the runner.
He’s safe. Late swing. Foul to the left. That one fouled off. Two and two. Half lays off.
Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Kyle Tucker waiting to hit for the Cubs. 3-2. Battling here as he fouls it away. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Pah right there to make the grab. That is the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. Eighth inning coming up, it’s the Cubs eight and the Cardinals three. Now pitching.
Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Drew Pomeratz. Drew.
He’s pitching on two days rest.
Pomearat. And now the Cardinals catcher, Pedro
P. Pedro Pz down the middle for a strike. 0 and one. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. That one to first and he takes it himself for the out. Now batting the center fielder, Victor Scott.
And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott. And first offering is fouled off. The Cubbies leading by five and we’re in the top of the eighth. Bunting for a hit. her over to first there to beat him by an eyelash. Hey man, four pitches, two outs. That is an excellent base. Two outs, base is empty. And now the DH Brendan Donovan one for three. First offering and it just misses. Movement in the Cubs bullpen. Ryan Presley up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Horton also throwing and a foul ball. So a foul ball makes it one and two. just misses the mark outside the zone. Two and two. Good job to fight that one off. Swings and misses. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three here at Wrigley Field. Out of the bottom of the eighth now. It’ll be the Cubs DH. Kyle Tucker. Gray back to work. Headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. The one to the right side. Gorman to first. Leadoff man is out here in the eighth. Now batting right fielder Seya Suzuki.
And now the right fielder Seya Suzuki. There’s the strike.
Activity in the bullpen. Jojo Romero preparing to come on if needed. This one in the air. Win hauls it in and there’s two away.
Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in but so hard to get on top of as a hitter.
Two down, base is empty. So now it’s the Cubs hitter in the four hole. Pete Crow Armstrong. And there’s the strike. And that one fouled off. I wouldn’t say the game’s close right now, but it’s not out of reach either. I mean, these pitchers really need to put up a zero on the board just to maintain a little hope. That one misses. Now one and two. Good eye on that.
That’s a ball. And it remains two and two. had a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Three up, three down that time. Ninth inning coming up. It’s the Cubs eight and the Cardinals three. We go to the ninth now. The number two hitter Mason Win.
Win. First pitch misses upstairs. swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Some real good life going through the zone on that one. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball three.
One. Swing. And a ball lifted in the air. Shallow left field. And there’s one down. The first base,
Alec Burlson next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homered here in this one. Just missed. That one is upstairs. Fouled off left side. Base is empty. One away here in the top of the ninth. And he can’t come up with it. Gets off a throw. The throw comes in too late and they can’t get the out.
Now that second base Nolan
and next will be the cleanup hitter Nolan Gorman. And that misses ball one Yeah, they’re swinging a miss.
I think he was sitting off speed there.
One and one. Swinging and a miss. Yeah, they count. One and two.
Knowing that the pitcher wants a ground ball double play opportunity here. You’ve got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there. Swinging at that pitch. That’s a no. No. got him looking and they’re down to their last out.
Well, he’s going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one. That was his third strike out and this one looking obviously. So, he’s been a little overmatched. He’s got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate. Nar stands in now. Looks at that one inside. on the ground. And this should do it. And that is the ball game. I always love playing Fourth of July games at home. There’s so much energy in the ballpark. The red, white, and blue everywhere. And when you get a win, you feel like you did something special. Now it’s off to get showered and changed and enjoy these fireworks. 83 the final in this one. The Cubs go home a winner for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. What the

I can't imagine how much they pay this Mikolas. He gives up 4 home runs in 2 inning. Unbelievable!
We always have problems with the Cubs. But miles didn't do a good job
MLB shows score as 1-11 in end of the 7th. Why is this game showing 3-8 ? St Louis never had 3.
Yes, I'm speaking with bias as a Cubs fan, but, imo, this is the embodiment of poetic justice in baseball. Why?
We get a franchise record for HR's in a single game with 8, but it goes deeper than achieving such a feat against our biggest rivals.
If you remember last year, we faced Mikolas, and he got thrown out of the game after beaning a hitter, threw a hissy fit, and flipped off the fans at Wrigley.
The baseball gods made his punishment very severe for such disrespect on sacred ground.
Another game in Wrigley, and Miles Mikolas somehow outdid his 4 HR disaster from his last game vs. the Cubs, becoming only the 11th pitcher in MLB history to give up 6 HR's in a single game.
And the best part: we did it all by the 3rd inning.
Multiple back-to-back HRs.
Multiple Seiya-Pete cup high-fives.
And Buschy got THREE.
That'll learn ya, you My Name Is Earl lookalike bitch.
