Dallas Stars hire Glen Gulutzan as new head coach
That’s a smart hockey man and this is his second time around as mentioned as the bench boss of the Dallas Stars. You see his numbers there with Calgary Flames in the last seven years as an assistant coach for Edmonton. Of course, the last two they got to the Stanley Cup final. He mentioned it right off the bat. Final four three years in a row. This is a tough business. We’ve talked about all the turnover in the coaching ranks in the National Hockey League. Tone, you’ve coached in this league. You go into a job where the previous coach got them to the conference final multiple years. That’s the standard. What’s it like for him?
Well, I I think it was exactly what he said when he said, “Love the D, love the goalenders, and love what we have down the middle.” So, he’s going into a position that he’s very confident in. He’s sending the right message to the players that are learning of him for the first time. I think he’s probably coached a couple of these guys along the way, but most of these guys are trying to figure out what kind of coach this is going to be when he gets hired. And when you come in and you say that in your press conference, how excited you are because of the depth and how strong you are each position. I think that makes each and every guy feel pretty darn good about the hire. Also, the experience that he gained in Edmonton, cuz who they have to go through if they’re going to make the Stanley Cup final, it’s got to be through Edmonton. They got to beat Edmonton. So knowing what he’s going against and knowing this conference extremely well and getting a second crack at it, I really like this hire. I think he’s going to do a great job. Yeah, I think it makes a lot of sense. I mean, it’s a rarity for our sport. You made that point, Tony, but it makes great sense. I mean, Jim Nil, it wasn’t a Jim Nil hire back in the day, but Jim Nil over overlapped with Gullin while he was a member, while he was the bench boss for the Dallas Stars. So, there’s good familiarity there. Uh Jim Neil goes into it and again with a with a fresh interview, you know, several years later, goes into it with a good bit of information. Um and two, you know, I’ll make this point about the situation, the circumstances. Um good coaches leave um you know, leave leave an organization for oftentimes all the wrong reasons. Things are going sour, you know, not necessarily lost the room, but a change is in order. So, for one, you know, there’s nothing that prevents a guy from coming back into a situation where, you know, you’ve you’ve you’ve been to a number of different places and developmentally, you know, you’ve improved, got some seasoning as a coach and you can kind of reintroduce yourself to that organization and and pick up on, you know, as as Tony mentioned, some really important development. This is one of the, you know, one organization with one of the stronger identities, stronger cultures in our game. He’s in a real position to succeed here.
