Red Sox vs. Nationals Game Highlights (7/4/25) | MLB Highlights
Happy Independence Day to all of you and thank you to all of our members of the United States military for your service and dedication to our country. Fans of both teams coming out to Nationals Park and they are streaming in through the center field gates as we get closer to first pitch between the Nationals and the Red Sox. Michael Sroka last year in relief pitched one inning against Boston. That’s the only time they’ve ever seen him. So, one pitch, one out. Here is Roman Anthony. The Red Sox, two of three from the Cincinnati Reds trying to get it going.
Line shot in the base hit into left by Anthony over the outstretched glove of House, the third baseman. So, the Red Sox have their first knock and he snaps an 0 for seven. Abraham Toro checks in at 291 with five home runs. Line drive, base hit into right field. Anthony rounding second. He’s going to make it into third. Standing up. Red Sox are wide awake. First and third, one down for Carlos Nayz. Round ball that’ll strike the runner in foul territory. Anthony could not get out of the way on that foul ball. How many times you say, “Why do you take a lead in foul territory?” Well, it’s cuz you get hit. But you never actually see someone get hit. He just took 96 off his leg.
Another one hooking him to that second out. Strikeout number 65. How about back to back just nasty curve balls. Oh.
So now here is Abrau. He’s their power threat with 17 home runs, 48 knocked in.
The face mask by the umpire has a look at that thing Miller. I did not think that Bill Miller would have any swag going. Oh, that’s a great pitch. Ham reaching and rolling it over. Garcia takes care of business. Good job by Michael Soka. He pitches around a pair of backto- back singles. Lucas Gilito 4 in-1 399 RA and the first time ever facing his former team.
Well, he’s been fantastic. And so here comes the lumber. That means James Wood has come to the plate.
Another close one. James calmly takes it for walk number 57. He’s in the top four in the National League in getting bases on balls. Luis Garcia Jr. comes to the plates. Ground ball to the right. Hamilton flips for one on to first and Red Sox turn two. 463. That’s all after inning number one. No score.
These early games it becomes about who makes the mistake. So limit that. Catch the baseball. Throw the baseball. Get some outs. Michael Soka and Trevor Story for the first time. Story swinging it. Well, nine hits in a fivegame streak.
Three balls, two strikes. The pitch is up the middle on the ground and it is backhanded by the second baseman Garcia. and he can’t make the throw to first. Story is aboard with an infield hit. So one away and Son Raphaela approaching the plate.
At second with one down and Sadon drives one high in the gap into right center field. Hing is back and it is off the wall coming home to score. Sadon into second with a foot first slide. Happy Independence Day and it is one to nothing in the second.
First pitch heater Sadon Raphaela. Two walls, two strikes, a run in. Son leading at second. The pitch is a soft ground ball on the left side. It’s going to be a tough play. Abrams gloves and throws to first in time to get Hamilton. Very nicely done there by CJ Abrams. Over to third goes Raphael and they’re two down.
Here’s Duran 0 for one. He’s fly to center. Red Sox trying to get this second run in with two down. Pitch is a line drive up the middle into center field. That’s a base hit and the Red Sox will double their lead.
The Red Sox very much wide awake here today with their hitting shoes on in Washington. Gino back at it with a two nothing lead here in DC and Lyall’s going to swing the first pitch and pop it up into the sunshine from Meyer and right on top of the line makes the play. Well, he only threw nine pitches lasting and gets it out on one pitch here in the third. Yeah, he liked that.
Swanging a miss 36. Ruiz on a high fast walks back to the dugout with his head at the ground and they’re two down for Gito. Man, does he look great.
And just the way that Lucas Gelo right now is pounding the zone, coming after you, not nibbling. He gets into a two count. He’s being able to throw that change up for a strike. That’ll put runners in first and second. Looked like Gilito was going to have a pretty quick inning. Then the walk and now this.
Oh, we always talk about pitching, going with defense. This is about 106 off the bat. It’s hit hard, but Hamilton kind of gets his feet stuck.
Two on, two down, 02 from Gino to Brady House. Swung on, hit up the middle, right to Story. E- gloves. Flips along to Hamilton. Steps on the bag. Hit, air, anything. It did not matter. Socks lead two nothing as we hit the fifth.
Pitches keep on coming for Boston. And now two more here in the fifth. A round to walk. It’ll get the bullpen working.
Anthony at third, Toro at second, Arvay at first. And he missed outside. Ball four. And that will force in a run. Abrao will pick up his 49th RBI of the year. The easy way with a bases loaded walk. And it’s now the Red Sox three in the Nationals nothing. Now Trevor Story who’s tough to double up. Base is loaded. The pitch is up the middle into center field. That is a base hit. Toros scores behind him. Narvas two-run knock for Story and it is five nothing Red Sox. and he’s just become really an RBI machine now for the last five weeks for this team.
Well, this is kind of surprising. Michael Soka really good from the late stages of the second inning through the third through the fourth. Had the leadoff guy 02 and then it kind of fell apart from there.
And so Brixie now will take over facing Marcelo Meyer.
Take him on first. Marcelo’s over for two. And now we’ll add a base hit to that to drive in another run. Abrao will score. Eighth RBI from Marcelo. Six to nothing Boston. Red Sox have had a terrific approach today.
Six consecutive Boston hitters reaching now.
So here’s Duran one for three. An RBI single. Story leading at second. Meyer on at first. Up the middle into center field. That is going to get down for a hit. Coming home to score is Story. Behind him waving home is Meyer. He is in there with a foot slide. Jiren Durant bolsters the lead to eight to nothing. So this becomes a giant inning for the Red Sox. Roman takes ball four. He is on base for the fourth time today. What a day for him. He’s aboard. Two on, two out for Abraham Toro. Line drive up the middle into center field. The hit parade continues. Durant scores. Toro delivers and it is nine nothing on the 4th of July. The bottom of the sixth inning. All Red Sox today here. the 4th of July 9 nothing. Meanwhile, Lucas Gelo pitching like it’s nothing nothings. He’s on the board with a base hit and CJ now on base 20 of his last 21 ball games. I mean, they’re just letting CJ steal. Will they give him a steal for that? I think it’s early enough in the game. They could have a runner at third base for the first time today. Garcia in the situation this year. 18 for 23. Get that guy in.
Swing and a fly ball to center. Sadon tracking, sprinting back, still back. He makes the play. Tag from third. Abrams is home. It does not matter. Sadon does it again. He went vertical to center and tracked in a ball that no one else catches. Swaging a miss. Jeno punches out low and the Red Sox lead nine to one.
Lucas Gelo has thrown five career complete games. Three of them shut outs.
Red Sox lead the Nationals 9-1 on this 4th of July. We’re in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lucas Gilito about to go out there for his seventh inning of work. That is a cold strike three. Punched him out. Knee high slider and the day continues. Steps deals one, two, swung on and missed again. Backto back punches. Three straight KS. Lucas Gilo finishes off seven innings of one run July 4th ball for Lucas Gilito. Now the man who’s even getting hits that he doesn’t officially have in this game is Trevor Story. He’s three for four today here. 9-1 Red Sox. He drives one high and deep into left field. That thing is back at the wall and is gone. Quite a day indeed for Mr. story. His fourth hit. That’s the way it’s been going for Trevor as of late. Red Sox already enjoying a big day. Now it’s become an absolute laugher in DC. Lucas Gelo back out for an eighth inning with an 11 to1 lead for the Socks.
Walk for Gilito. And I I would imagine now Gilito 10 run game about 103 pitches. This might well be his final hitter. Alex Call will bat instead. Boy, you’d love to get this ground ball, wouldn’t you? just to get that eight strong one run. He’s taking a two and finish this job. Is high in the air on the right field side. Coming in is Abrau and he will in foul territory make a running grab and they’re two down.
So at 108 pitches that day is done for Lucas Gilo. He’s going to get a great hand from these Red Sox fans here in DC. 111 two on in this bottom of the eighth inning. Great start. Garrett Whitlock is on. Third pitcher of the late morning, early afternoon for Alex Kora and the Red Sox side.
And that’ll give Lyall a chance to extend the hitting streak.
Double play would end the game.
Dalon Lyall high in the air right center near the scoreboard and that’ll keep his hitting streak alive. Coming around to score is Brady House and the Nads make it 11 to2. Good for Dalon.
So it is indeed an 11game hitting streak for Dalon Lyall. Now Kar Ruiz aheaded his last atbat. A single to right. One out of three.
And it is lined on a hop to second base. Hamilton backhands. He plants. He throws to first in time. Ball game over. The Red Sox win it on the 4th of July and the nation’s capital 11-2. Gita was awesome. story. Four hits and a homer.

Let these Sox remind all fans who have never played team sports, it doesn't matter how good a teammate is if they're toxic in the locker room.
