TIGERS POSTCAST: INDEPENDENCE DAY WIN! Detroit Tigers BEAT Cleveland Guardians In Series Opener
This is the Tigers Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Detroit Tigers, part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. Oh yeah, the Tigers are back in the wind column and what a way to celebrate Independence Day. Happy 4th of July and welcome into a live locked on Tigers postcast. It’s a 2-1 win for the Detroit Tigers over the Cleveland Guardians. That lead in the American League Central continues to grow and what a fantastic pitching performance. We break it all down. It was Reese Olsen. It was Tyler Holton. A little bit of action from Tommy Canley in the eighth and some help from his friend Will Vest to close it out. That’s all coming up next on a live locked on Tigers postcast. And oh yeah, don’t forget we’ll check in on the Tigers offense as well. A couple of solo home runs to power the Tigers past the Guardians. This is the lot locked on Tigers postcast and I am your host Jake Reapma. Make sure you get involved in the comments section. It’s your postgame destination for all things Detroit Tigers free and available wherever you get your podcast and of course on YouTube as well. It’s all part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team each and every day. Make sure you like and subscribe. And as I mentioned, fire up that comment box. I want to hear from you. We begin where we always begin, our biggest talking point. Where did the game turn? If you were to tell a friend about this game, well, you’d probably tell him about Reese Olsson because it was great to see him back in the lineup for the Detroit Tigers. But you might also tell him about Wel Perez. We begin with our biggest talking point.
This is what you’ll be talking about about a Tigers team that fought back to take a 2-1 lead after falling behind early in the one- nothing lead to the solo home run from Jose Ramirez in the first inning. And you know what? That’s what Jos Ramirez does. He’s that good. He’s always been a Tigers killer. He’s hit a 100 home runs against the Tigers. I believe it’s like 30 something. But you weather the storm and what a defensive play from Wel Perez to gun down the runner in the home half of the second inning. And instead of it turning to a two nothing game, it become it’s still a one- nothing game. Then how many times we see that a guy that makes a play in the field in one inning comes back to do something at the plate and it was Wel Perez with the home run. Other talking points, Reese Olsen four and a third in his first start back off the injured list. Already saw a couple of comments on him and how great it is to see him back in the starting rotation for the Detroit Tigers. how important it is to have him in the starting rotation given the amount of adversity this rotation has faced and the need for a bonafide second starter because Jack Flity just hasn’t been that guy this season and you know with Casey Mai pitching as well as he has and with Reese Olsson you know you start to talk about okay who is going to be the third and fourth guy because obviously this team’s goals and aspirations are far beyond the regular season. So you start thinking about what that postseason rotation might look like and is it who’s going to be the next guy you hand the ball to after Terk Scooel and so it feels like somewhat of an auditioning period down the stretch into the all-star break and of course the second half of the season because I’m not convinced it’s Jack Flity right now just given what we’ve seen from him and nights like tonight I know Ree only went four and a third but first start back getting his sea legs underneath him and and just getting back to MLB shape after missing time with the injury. So, a lot of good. A lot of good. And I know I mentioned Wel Perez with the solo home run. Zack McKinstry with another solo home run to put the Tigers ahead. And this was early on. I mean, this is the fourth inning. And then the pitching staffs for both teams take over from the fifth all the way on. No score in this game. And the Tigers earn the 2-1 win. Now with Zack McKinstry and Wel Perez both hitting home runs for McKinstry. It’s his sixth of the season for Wel Paris. hits his seventh of the season. And two guys that have a similar impact on this team and just the energy that they bring, the spark plug players that they are and such valuable, I don’t want to use the term role players, but such valuable production guys that that do it without the, you know, star player tag, but night in night out, it’s guys like Wel Perez. It’s guys like Zack McKinstry that have helped this Tigers team get to where they are. And with a win over the Cleveland Guardians tonight, you talk about where the Tigers are in the American League Central. And at this point in the season, we’re not even to the All-Star break. And the Tigers with the win now of a 13 12 point uh or 13 and 12 game lead over the Guardians, 13 and 1/2 games over the Royals, and 12 over the Twins. I mean, it’s just unheard of what the Tigers are doing as far as distancing themselves for the rest of the season over the American League Central. It’s amazing. It’s incredible. It’s awesome stuff. You got to love it. You absolutely have to love it. And I know that comment box is firing it up. What’s crazy is I can remember so vividly a year ago at this time because of the holiday, July 4th, this Tigers team 15 games out of first place and just a depressing sad state of reality wondering. I mean, they were selling. You knew they’re going to be sellers at the July 31st trade deadline. They were. And then that August 11th date always sticks me because the Tigers have the best record in all of baseball since August 11th of last season. And the winning ways in the turnaround has just been so incredible to witness. That’s for sure. All right, let’s get to some of these comments right now. And I appreciate everybody tuning in and chiming in on a live locked on Tigers post. Fishing with Shredders is up first. So glad Olsen is back. We really need him in the rotation. Also probably the best outing of the season for Holton. Hopefully he’s getting it worked out. Glad you said that. I know I touched on it briefly. But Tyler Holton really, really good. He gets the win. He’s now four and three, but he goes two and a third. So he came on for Reese Olsson in the fifth and got it all the way to or two and two/3s, I’m sorry. He goes all the way then getting it to the eighth inning and just to anchor the middle portion of that game and against a really good Cleveland offense with four strikeouts did not walk a batter and gave up just the one hit in that time. Now Tommy Canley we know he had a tough outing in DC against the Nationals and really squandered that game. The Tigers led 4-3 going to the eighth. Faced however many batters I don’t remember the exact number off the top of my head but didn’t record an out. There was concern that maybe he he suffered an injury. He looked better tonight. I know he didn’t get all the way through the eighth inning and Will Vest had to bail him out for the four out save. But the bullpen collectively, you can’t say enough about them for five and two/3 scoreless innings um and shutting the Guardians out, which is the biggest reason why the Tigers were victorious tonight. More comments to get to and appreciate everybody chiming in. Demetrius McNeel is up next. He says, “Jake, with Casey Mai and Terubble pitching this weekend at Cleveland, I hope this team will sweep the darn Guardians. Play the song. Mr. DJ, the Tigers won again.” Absolutely. Play that song. Rodney Morgan, umpires, the game MVP. Lol. I don’t know if you’re referring to that close play at home uh when Wel Perez threw out the runner in the home half of the second inning, but they reviewed it. And I I looked I think Jason Benetti and uh Dan Petri had a good take on it with whatever it was called on the field was likely what it was going to stay. And even though it was a bang bang play, I think Dylan Dingler did a great job of applying the tag in a quick motion. And with Naylor being thrown out at home, you know, they’re looking at did Dylan Dingler block the plate in any capacity. He didn’t. Tag was applied. Umpire made the call. And look, I’m not here to defend. I mean, if you’re a Guardians fan, you want to tell me he was safe, fine. If you’re a Tigers fan, you’re going to tell me he is out. Let’s all agree on that. I’m not going to uh go any further on that. YouTube user says the Fourth of July caps looked horrible. I’m glad that you mentioned that. I was wondering the same thing. I mean, I love a good holiday cap, a good alternate, you know, switch it up, uh, do something crazy, but what I mean, who designed those? What are we doing? Like, they just they missed it. It’s light blue and royal blue, and it’s for the Fourth of July. I mean, it’s a navy, red, white, and blue are the colors of the flag. I mean, I don’t I just I don’t know what happened there. Again, I’m all for the alternate hat on a holiday. Um, the rope hat was kind of interesting. You know, he gets the rope across the bill there, but it just Yeah, it this was a swing and a miss from Major League Baseball. I’ve always said I’d love to design team uniforms when I was a kid. You know, I love doing that for football teams and and helmet designs and and same with baseball. I just feel like I could do a better job than what uh Major League Baseball came up with. I mean, the logo with the and the inside filling being the um the flag is certainly cool, but man, you think they could do better than the royal blue bill and the light blue cap. But hey, we’ll take the win. Gareth Riding says, “A great game pitched by Reese Olsen. Agree.” John Broki says, “Happy to see Reese Olsson back pitching well. All the scoring, three solo home runs.” That’s right. I mean, it felt like there was going to be a lot more scoring based on the way the the number of uh traffic and and base runners that were on base throughout the course of this game, but the pitching just really settled in nicely. Gary Meyer, shout out to him says, “Woo, and by the way, happy 4th of July.” I think I said that to uh but I want to reiterate it’s really frustrating that Sweeney is still in the big leagues right now. I’m sure we have a lefty power bat in the miners somewhere. Yeah, I I get it. Um, you know, I look at the box score in this one. I watch it, you know, closely throughout the course of the nine innings. That’s not my takeaway, but to each their own. Um, I I think if at some point there is a better left-handed bat that would give this Tigers team be, you know, a better chance to win than this front office and and AJ Hinch and the rest of the coaching staff has shown that they’re they’re going to do whatever it takes. and and I would say being 20 games over 500 and 13 and a half games ahead of the Guardians and a 12 and a half game lead over the Twins in the division, I think they’re doing something right. I think they’re uh you know um 21 games over 500 by the way. I short changed them a game. I think there’s something to the formula that they have going right now. Kazzy says the Tigers are too good to need extra help. Uh Matt Verling made a nice catch as John Broki points out in the comments. I agree. I was a little worried. I know he’s had the upper body injury. He goes down and uh still is able to maintain uh the control of the ball and he didn’t get hurt. Gary Meyer says, “Thank God the Tiger killer himself didn’t make it to the plate in the ninth.” Well, they took care of him in the eighth, so got to um got to salute him there. Okay. Mark says it was a bad call at home. Tigers got lucky. Again, we’re going to debate that until we’re all blue in the face. uh I think what they called um on the field is was not enough to overturn it. And if you want to say the Tigers got lucky, sure. But uh we’ll take it. And that turned out to be a big turning point in this game. Okay. So many comments and I appreciate it. And this is a good one from Max Splicer here. Kanley in high leverage innings has been rough lately. It wasn’t great tonight, but he gets the two outs in the eighth. And I think AJ Hinch deserves a lot of credit for going to Will Vest sooner rather than later and say, “Hey, we’re not messing around with the final out in this eighth inning.” Will Vest comes in for the four out save and gets the job done. Got a little dicey in the ninth, but hey, two men on. Gets the t soft grounder back to the pitcher mound for the final out of the inning and will take it. Wow. All right, I’ve gone a little long in the first segment. That’ll happen. It’s a holiday. We can do what we want, right? We beat to the sound of our own drum. Let’s keep the lights on and come back with our talking point or our turning point rather and our player of the game. That’s next on a live lockdown Tigers postcast. And it is time for our turning point. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. The turning point can be summarized in two words, one name. Wel Perez. Wel Perez with the throw from right field to home plate to gun down Naylor who is trying to score on the Martinez single. And that made the or that kept the game one to nothing in favor of the Guardians. And the instead of it being a two-run lead for Cleveland, Wel Paris comes back in the very next inning and hits a solo home run. Zack McKinstry does the same in the following inning. And bada bing, bada boom, you’ve got a 2-1 Tigers victory. So Wenzo Paris saving a run, hitting a solo home run. That combination from the home half of the second into the top of the third is your turning point for tonight’s win for the Tigers over the Guardians. How about a player of the game?
This is the locked on player of the game. Give it up for Wel Perez because my man with the outfield assist to save a run as well as a solo home run. And look, it’s his seventh of the year. Obviously, he missed so much time at the beginning of the season with the injury. And for him to already be topping out seven home runs, he’s got that sneaky power you love to see. And for the Tigers, he and Zack McKinstry accounting for the only RBI’s, but both by way of solo home runs. Just not a lot of hits for this Tigers team. But give it up for Wel Perez. He played a whale of the game. And you need those types of individual performances to get the job done and Perez certainly delivered. Appreciate everybody tuning in on tonight’s Fourth of July holiday special. Hopefully you enjoyed some time with friends and family. Maybe had a couple of hot dogs. Hopefully not as many as Joey Chestnut who downed 72, I believe. I don’t know. It’s disgusting. Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. I know it’s part of the Fourth of July traditions, but I mean, that’s too many hot dogs for me. But the Tigers get the win. They get to enjoy some fireworks at Progressive Field. And even though maybe you would rather spend the time in pure Michigan, beautiful Michigan, they’ll take a win. But tomorrow, we’ve got another Tigers Guardians action. I believe it’s a night game. Let me just make sure. Indeed, it is. So, we’ll be on the air tomorrow night following the conclusion of the 7:15 first pitch. And you got Casey M going. Logan Allen for the Guardians. There’s your pitching matchup. It’s Casey Mai, the right-handers, 8-2, 2………………..6 ra. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. He. Logan Allen 5-6 with a 4.27 ERA on the season. Tigers continue to create that space in the American League Central and you absolutely love to see it. Have a wonderful rest of your evening. Enjoy the rest of the holiday. Maybe you have some apple pie, strawberry shortcake. Those are both very American desserts. You got to love it. And we’ll talk to you tomorrow on July 5th for a little Saturday night Locked on Tigers post. Make sure you like and subscribe. Helps us out a great deal. Great Pitching and Perez doing what he does. 2 runs just because of him.
Glad the Tigers won, but, that strike call on Manzardo before the last out was about as preposterous a strike call as I've seen in awhile. That thing was a ball-and-a-half above the zone. Sheesh. Of course that sort of thing rattles a batter – they know they'd better swing at everything. I'm a die-hard Tigers fan but that was a very bad place for a very, very bad call – bottom of the ninth, tieing run on second, and the ump calls that s strike – if I was a Guardians fan I would be seriously pissed. The truth may suck but I still like the truth. The Guardians are struggling but the Tigers didn't exactly set the world on fire with their offense tonight, either.
trade for bregman and chapman 🔥
I think the Tigers are getting the most out of what they have and that is a credit to A.J. and the players they have. Are they a championship team yet?
I've really only been following their games more closely the last few weeks, having discovered the game highlights on You Tube. What I have seen is, great defense (mostly, with a few bad infield throwing errors) and decent to very good offense (though they seem to get shut down every other game by someone. But then again it is the big leagues and every team has a good pitcher or two).
Obviously Skubal is exceptional and the bullpen has been strong with Vest closing, but as mentioned here on the podcast, the starting pitching is really a concern. They are barely playing 500 ball the last few weeks and the games have become very predictable. A couple good outings with strong relief. A couple bad outings where they give up a ton of runs and can't score.
Some of the base running I saw last month I would not have thought a little league team would make those mistakes. They ran themselves out of innings and if their offense hadn't been producing they would have lost those games. I just didn't get why guys were being waved home and then ended up 20 feet short of home plate when the catcher got the ball and they were easy outs.
Saying they have a great lead in their division is of course in part due to them, but when everyone else is playing below 500 ball, is that a credit to your team or a knock on those teams?
If I seem hard on them, it is because the team they have now I think would be lucky to get out of the second round and even more lucky to get to the World Series.
They are a good team playing 500 ball at the moment. Can they beat a loaded Dodger's team or even get out of the American League to go to the World Series?
I think this team has a number of important questions to answer and the biggest ones have to do with their starting rotation. Not to mention the base running coaching? That was a stunner to see guys chugging around third and thrown out by a mile.. Not just once, but in 3 or 4 games in a row.
I know how hard it is to win a championship. Detroit hasn't done it in over 40 years! The team they have now and the way they are playing is not at that level. Of course that is what the post season is for.. To come together and show who you really are..
Should be an interesting rest of the season… thanks for the podcast.
drove down to watch the game tonight, worth it!
