Development Camp Update (7/1): Musty
Quinton, I hear you’re going to cause some trouble with Joey Maldi this uh this couple days here. Is that true?
I guess so. We’re roommates here. So, yeah, it’s good having someone from back home, you know, to you know, be here with me and uh you know, obviously still trying to, you know, meet new people and, you know, every year there’s a lot more new kids. So, yeah, just trying to meet as many people as possible.
You know him from back home in Buffalo or is he somebody you trained with in Toronto over the summer?
Joey.
Yeah.
Uh he lives like 5 minutes from home. So yeah, we grew up playing together against each other and yeah, have been friends since probably seven, eight. So
nice. So when you know, you have that and obviously you guys have been to development camps before. You are, I would argue, one of the most veteran people at this development camp. I mean to see those two, you guys kind of maybe take some guys under your wing and kind of nice to see some of these new kids coming through and kind of show them what it’s like in San Jose a little bit.
Yeah, I mean obviously it’s what you try to do when you’re here, but uh yeah, a lot of guys, you know, they got do it on their own. I mean, you know, everyone’s came through this camp. It’s, you know, you come through and, you know, you learn as you go. So, you know, just trying to let them, you know, got not get in their way and, you know, take a lot of it in, but yeah, when you’re going to eat and stuff like that, you know, taking them with you, you know, going different places, show them around. So,
for yourself, what’s been the messaging for you obviously with the Barracuda at the end of the season, you know, working here now? I mean, there’s been a lot more conversation with you recently compared to a lot of the other guys here. What’s been the messaging of what they want you to work on during this three days here? Yeah, I mean it’s just it’s a development camp so you know you’re not you know we’re getting too much done in the three days. It’s just you know I think everyone’s goal for development camps just you know get your prospects and you know get everyone to meet each other and you know have a good time. So does this camp feel different for you after you know having gone through it a few times or not really?
Yeah, it feels feels the same actually. Yeah, it’s been uh kind of the same thing for three years here now and uh yeah, you know, it’s uh it’s a lot of fun to be here. I mean, you know, it’s right in the middle of the summer and you know, the weather’s great always. So, yeah, it’s nice to get somewhere new and you know, meet new people.
Yeah. What has it been like meeting the the new guys? Has anyone stood out to you?
Yeah, I mean, uh that was the first skate here today, but you know, they’re all young and, you know, everyone’s got a lot of skill and everyone can play the game here. So, uh yeah, it was fun to watch out there today and uh I’m excited to, you know, see them throughout the week.
Sure. Obviously, you’ve you’ve gone against uh you know, Misa and Dickinson for a while and potential of being on their team. Obviously, you know, you’ve skated with Sam a little bit, but the pick of Michael Misa, does that a guy who you’ve played against for a couple years now? Like, how does that excite you? What what what do you know about him as a player just going against him?
Yeah, he’s just uh you know, all around just a good player. You know, he does everything the right way and you know, he’s fun to watch. Even you know, when you’re playing against him, it’s a pain to play against him, you know, on the offensive side and the defensive side. So yeah, Sharks made a great pick there and you know got a you know 200 foot player and yeah, he’s going to be special.
A lot of OHL guys in this draft, but I mean through the Sharks organization now, I mean to finally have a lot of those top guys, yourself included be part of this organization. What does it say about the OHL as a whole even with all this NCA and back and forth stuff just to see the draft they had and the Sharks commitment to them too?
Yeah, I mean I think it’s uh you know the real change is great. I mean before that you know the OHL’s you know always been producing you know high-end talent and you know this year this draft especially you can see uh you know a lot of high-end kids coming out of there and yeah I think the rule will just you know make it a little better you know kids can you know a lot more kids will come over you know in the younger days and then they’ll go off to college and I think that’s uh you know the right path for for most kids and you know you always have the option to to stay there for as long as you need. So yeah it’s a great uh development program and yeah a lot of fun. I want to ask you with the phenomenon that Shorsy has become, what is it like playing in Sbury? I mean, do you, you know, do you see any of the actors around town? What is it? What is that atmosphere like?
I mean, um, you know, couple years back, uh, our whole team was in an episode, uh, yeah, they filmed it right at our rink. So, yeah. And then, uh, this year, one of my teammates, uh, was actually a character in the show. So, this past year and then this coming year. So, yeah, it’s cool seeing them around. They come to a lot of games and you know it’s always nice when when they were there and you know they get the fans going and stuff. So yeah it was nice you know meeting them and having them around. Yeah. Kind of a unique experience for for junior hockey right?
Yeah. Yeah. Pretty cool.
