Why the risk is going to pay off
If any other team had sent this package and spent this money on Keandre Miller, I would not feel nearly as good about it as I do with the Carolina Hurricanes because all they do is acquire defenseman and turn them into monsters on their own blue line. I want to talk about the Hurricanes though off the rip because they make that big trade. First they sign Logan Stanovven to an unbelievable contract and then they make the big trade. They bring in KAR Miller, left shot defenseman, sign him for eight times seven and a half million dollars. They give up a lot to get him. They give up two draft picks, including a 2026 first, which if 2026 firsts are traded, you know, is top 10 protected, heavily protected pick, so it’s not going to turn into Gavin McKenna, Katon Verhof, whomever. But they trade that, they trade a second round pick, they trade a prospect, Scott Marorrow, a guy who’s taken high in the draft, and they get Kandre Miller. Now, Kandre Miller, as he was discussed in New York, was definitely not uh a problem, but on a team that was stinking and underwhelming, people were like, “We wish this guy could be better.” off seasonason comes, Carolina Hurricanes swoop in, trade a bunch for him when there’s rumors that there could be an offer sheet and now everyone should be thinking Rangers fans are gonna be pissed because as you said, he goes to a team where a defenseman go to Thrive. He’s going to be amazing. We were texting about it yesterday. If anybody has any KAR Miller stock that they would like to sell, we will pay double. Yeah, pretty much. And like I like I like it from both sides because like you mentioned the Keandre Miller like if you were to tell Rangers fans you were going to get that much and he was going to get that much on his next contract, they would have said, “Okay, cool. Let’s let’s move on.” And Gabriov going to the Rangers I think makes them a better defensive team. And so like every side kind of wins here, but ultimately if any other team had sent this package and spent this money on Keandre Miller, I would not feel nearly as good about it as I do with the Carolina Hurricanes because all they do is acquire defenseman and turn them into monsters on their own blue line. So there is no doubt in my mind that Keandre Miller is going to hit another level with the Carolina Hurricanes
except for Gustaf Forsley. They let him slip through their fingers. Yes. Someone else turned him into a good deal
famously.
Okay. Uh Kandre Miller gets $7.5 million per year, which as you said, outside of the Hurricanes, that’s risky. That’s the second biggest AAV handed out to a defenseman yesterday. Ivan Prov got $8.5 million. You look at what’s being thrown around for some of these players. I take trading for, we went into the day, I texted you guys. is I was like, “Someone’s going to trade for KA Andre Miller today.” I didn’t know that they were going to give him this big of a contract, but when defensemen left or right side are at such a premium, I’d much rather trade for the tall 25year-old if you’ve got the assets with the her, which the Hurricanes absolutely do. this trade. They they have so many assets that the pick that’s going to go to the Rangers in this deal is going to be the higher of the Hurricanes and the Stars first round pick because they have both of those anyway. So, they’ve got the assets. They’ve also got $19 million in cap space after this. So, they could have theoretically by the end of free agency re-uped a young star player in Logan Stanovven for a very long time at a great number. That that number is so good that like Logan Sangovven should fire his agent.
I thought about that. I was trying to say that nicely yesterday. It’s that number is so unbelievable. 6 by six, right?
Yeah. 8 by6 8 by6. Jesus Christ. Fire your agent. I mean, if he becomes what we know he’s going to become, that’s an unbelievable contract for the team. And they get a top four defenseman. And now they still definitely have the dough if they want to sign Nikolai Eers. And remember, last year was not supposed to be the year for the Hurricanes. That was supposed to be a transitional year. If they’re transitioning into what it looks like they’re going to have now, they’re going to be unbelievable. So, watch out for them. I think the Capitals are going to fall off a little bit. I think we all expect them to. And watch out for the Carolina Hurricanes in the metro. [Applause] [Music]
The Carolina Hurricanes made a big bet on K’Andre Miller on the opening day of free agency, acquiring the defenseman from the New York Rangers and then immediately making him their highest-paid blue liner. Can the Canes maximize Miller’s potential, or are they going to regret giving up what it took to get him?

I think the trade was pretty even for both sides tbh
I’m a canes fan, and I don’t want to sound like a homer… but the way I see it is as such.
1. Morrow has potential, no doubt – however he was utterly lost on the ice when the canes needed him in the playoffs. And that’s where the canes need to win, the playoffs. They could keep Scotty and let him develop, but the time is nigh…
2. Miller elevates the ceiling of the D corps, which already has a history of getting the most out of Defensemen… expect to see a similar trend.
3. Canes surrender picks which will likely be towards end of rounds 1 & 2, and get an immediate upgrade in a 1:1 player swap of Scott for K’Andre. Oh, and the canes can afford it now, and the cap is gonna go bazooka…
4. Any of us would look decent playing on a team with Slavin, if it goes to hell, K’andre cannot possibly be a larger liability than 41 year old Brent Burns…
I won’t worry about this signing until we see at least 2 years of Miller in the system. Let’s go Canes.
The Rangers get the better of the draft picks between Dallas and the Hurricanes
Rangers wanted to get shed of Miller, but be honest, the whole Rangers show was mess. You can’t put all that on Miller. We’ll pull for him, and hopefully it will work out great. Canes still need a couple of pieces, so we’ll see.
Slavin/Chatfield/Nikishin/Miller is a menacing top 4. Size, speed, hitting, defense, passing, shooting, this is a group that has no weaknesses. Gostisbehere and Walker might be the best third pair in the league too. I hope we can get a good forward. If they can sign Ehlers and then trade for a 2C (or move Jarvis to 2C) we're looking at a very good team with a much better chance against Florida than last time.
K’Andre has the size & tools. But he wore out his welcome in NY b/c of his penchant for turnovers in critical moments. If a change in scenery & coaching fixes his head, then of course the Canes makes out great. But signing up for an 8 year pact rather than a bridge deal on a question mark…that’s risky.
Good luck! K’Andre has all of the talent to be great but his head is totally gone. All NYR were bad last year but Miller was the worst of all. 2 years ago he started to lose his mind and easy turns became hard. Last year he just got worse and worse as the season went. He needs to find his confidence or Carolina is in a big world of problems.
Miller replacing Orlov for a cheaper price is an upgrade by itself then you add the fact that he's younger, bigger and faster I see it as a good deal. Morrow wasn't close to NHL level and the picks Carolina traded are late round picks they normally trade anyway. He was bad in NY because the Rangers don't really have a defensive structure they just chase guys with the puck and lose coverage.. Canes have a better Defensive game overall so Miller should make a positive impact for the team
