[Charania] The Houston Rockets are trading Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards for two second-round picks, sources tell ESPN. The deal gives Whitmore a tremendous opportunity for an increased role as he turns 21 on Tuesday and returns to the DMV area.

Update: The Rockets worked with Whitmore, the No. 20 pick in 2023, and his reps at WME Basketball over the last few weeks on a new home. Whitmore has averaged 10.8 points over two years — last season scoring 0.46 points per touch, 4th-best among players to record 1,000 touches.

  1. Oh I hate this… why are we dumping him for nothing when he still has potential.

  2. Low risk high reward. No brainer for a team like the Wizards to do this. Was hoping Brooklyn got him.

  3. On one hand, he fell to 20 for a reason. On the other, I’m sad that he couldn’t work out here. Plenty of physical talent, but not the right attitude.

Well he’ll love chucking in DC at least. If it works out, he can get the bag. But I feel like Tre Johnson is more likely to grab that scorer role.

He’s limited as a dribbler and with OTD shooting. At least right now he’s mostly suited to a 3&D play finisher that can attack close outs, but he wants to play like a primary ball handler. He’ll definitely get more minutes in Washington, but I doubt coaches there will let him have his way playing however instead of a defined role with all the other talent there.

  4. Shitty return but there’s a reason this guy didn’t play a lot under Ime. He’s a score first guard who doesn’t do much else. Got really pouty and clearly has attitude issues as well.

  5. Wizards are stacking a lot of young talent, the Presti way. Let the cream rise and flip the rest of the young prospects for future assets.

  6. A+ deal for the Wizards. Just phenomenal for them. Worst case scenario Whitmore doesn’t pan out but 2 2nds is barely any risk.

  7. Washington has made ten or so awesome moves in a row. You love to see it!

  8. Shams tweet just after this makes it seem like Rockets could’ve had better offers, but worked with Whitmore’s team to find a place where he’d get a good opportunity to play, which I respect a lot

  9. I fucking love this.

What a wildly cheap acquisition of a guy who could thrive with a bigger role and either be an actual piece or be traded down the line for a higher price.

  10. Everyone asking why when the obvious answer is that no team is really high on him.

Apparently his attitude is not great around the league.

  11. damn, only 2 2nds. and i wanted my pistons to take him fifth over ausar that draft. goes to show i (we) dont know shit

  12. Great move by the Wizards. Low cost trade for a guy with all the incentive in the world to build his value up.

If he turns it around you can keep him for cheap or move him at the deadline to a team that needs some scoring punch.

If none of it works out it’s just two seconds for a guy on a low salary. Easily dumpable.

This is exactly the kind of swings teams like Washington should be taking.

  13. Honestly the Wizards have a solid young group.

    Bilal Coulibaly
    Alex Sarr
    Bub Carrington
    Kyshawn George
    Tre Johnson
    Will Riley
    AJ Johnson
    Cam Whitmore

With their poor lottery luck and how bad of contracts they have had I think that’s a solid group. Obviously need a star and for them to improve, but I’d have some hope if I was a Wizards fan.

  14. Washington now has 9 first-round picks from the past 3 drafts:

    2023:
    Bilal Coulibaly (No. 7)
    Cam Whitmore (No. 20)

    2024:
    Alex Sarr (No. 2)
    Bub Carrington (No. 14)
    AJ Johnson (No. 23)
    Kyshawn George (No. 24)
    Dillon Jones (No. 26)

    2025:
    Tre Johnson (No. 6)
    Will Riley (No. 21)

  15. Rafael Stone did him a solid and sent him to where he’ll get an opportunity to play.

  16. Bub and Whitmore on court together, don’t expect other three guys to get any shots up

  17. I know bro wants to leave the team but for 2 second round picks. No actual talent coming back in the trade so I guess Reed Sheppard finally moves up the depth chart to 10-11 mpg. I don’t know why Cam wouldn’t want to stay after the loss of Dillion and Green without a guard coming in. Unless he burned a bridge or is enemies with Ime I feel like he could have easily earned 10-15 mpg.
