Dev Camp 2025 – Sam Dickinson
All right, we are here with Sam Dickinson at 2025 dev camp for the San Jose Sharks. So, you went through this a year ago. I’m curious, is it wild to be on the other end of it and watching a lot of these kids be where you were a year ago?
Yeah, it’s obviously a little different, you know, being a year older, having gone through this uh you know, once before. So, a little bit of a a change for me and in how things go. You know, obviously understand everything here a little more, know more people, but at the same time, it’s you know, still just excitement to be back.
Yeah. Do you think that you were looking back on it more wideeyed than you were this year?
Uh, no. I I think I’ve every time I come here, I’m always, you know, really excited, looking forward to learning and and all that stuff. So, you know, every time I come here, it’s uh, yeah, like I said, really exciting.
I don’t think I’m breaking any news to you, but Mike Greer said that you had proved about as much as you could previously. What does that make you feel about what your next step is going to be in your career? Yeah, I mean it’s obviously, you know, nice to hear that from from him, but at the same time, you know, I understand that there’s a lot of work to be done to get to that next level. And, you know, obviously my goal is to to get to that next level as soon as possible, but you know, at the same time, it’s not really up to me. It’s it’s up to the work that I put in and that kind of stuff. And, you know, hopefully through the summer, I can uh I can prove that.
What did you learn last year about your game? I mean, we all watched the highlights. You were consistently putting up great numbers. You know, you had a great season. I mean, how does that make you feel about where you are at this point? Yeah, it’s it’s obviously a really nice feeling coming off a season, you know, personally for myself, but also, you know, the team success that we had made it a lot easier to to do what I was able to do last year. So, that was awesome. But, I mean, yeah, it’s just, you know, building on on that day by day, uh, you know, practice by practice every time I get the chance. Just, you know, trying to get that that 1% better, I guess. Yeah. Is it is that your mindset just always get that 1% better because it does accumulate over time?
Yeah, absolutely. especially through the summer. Obviously, you know, a bit of a shorter summer for me, but you know, every time I get the chance, you know, I’m just looking to, you know, improve myself any way I can.
When you come to this dev camp and you get to work with these coaches, are they telling you things that you need to work on? Are they trying to reinforce some of the things you’ve been able to build in your game in the last year? What has the message been in this very, you know, short couple of days here?
Yeah, it’s it’s a little bit of everything. you know, they want, you know, they want to, you know, work on the things that I need to work on to, you know, become a better player, but at the same time, you know, improve the things that I’ve already, you know, built into my into my toolbox when I’m playing. So, you know, it’s great that, you know, I get to learn a little bit of everything here.
Does your life and your game feel a whole lot different than where it was a year ago when you were drafted?
Um, you know, not really. You know, I think, uh, for me it’s always just, you know, finding ways to improve, finding ways to get better, not really, you know, being content with where I’m at and just, you know, uh, looking for what’s next, I guess.
Okay. So, dream scenario when we’re doing this interview a year from now, we’ll just say at some point in the preseason, what what would you like us to be talking about? What what would what’s your narrative?
I I think for me, you know, I think it’s it’s just making making the Sharks roster. Uh, you know, that’s that’s been a goal of mine since I got drafted and, you know, I think that uh, you know, potentially the chance for that is is is potentially soon. It’s exciting and, you know, just gives me even more to work towards.
Okay. So on that note, how do you make sure that you’re not playing tight in front of these guys? Because you are in that mode of where you constantly want to show like, hey, I’m ready for this. I want to do this. How do you make sure that doesn’t make you too self-aware and self-conscious when you’re playing and keep you from playing your best game?
I think it’s just being confident and, you know, obviously that’s uh what like I what I said is, you know, a big thing to achieve. So, you know, I’m not going to do that, you know, shying away or not playing my game. So, it’s just being confident in my abilities.
What’s next for you this summer after the dev camp? Uh, just back at home. back at home, you know, obviously right back uh in the gym and on the ice getting better, but you know, going to enjoy my time off when it comes. But h yeah, just uh I guess an exciting summer.
When you do get time off, what do you like to do? You barbecuing with the boys, you going golfing? What’s what’s on your uh plate? Uh I mean, basically it’s it’s right up to my cottage. Uh a lot of golfing, a lot of time spent out on the boat, and yeah, I like to throw some stuff down on the barbecue.
Nice. How How is your golf game?
Uh it’s getting there. I think, you know, like my hockey game, I’d like to say round by round I’m getting better, but that’s probably not true. 1%.
Exactly. But uh it’s probably not true.
Have you played any of the courses here in the Bay Area? Have you had any chances to?
Not yet. I’m still waiting for actually last year I played we played Cordoval which was unbelievable. It was awesome. We had a we had a good time there.
That’s very nice. Well, yeah, there’s Yeah, that’s one of the very many many nice courses around here. So, we’ll have to work on that.
Yeah, my dad was excited about Yeah, there he goes. Yeah, I like that. But all right, man. I will let you go because I know you’ve got a very very busy couple of days here, man. But very excited for what’s next for you, man. And I’ll be bugging you for more interviews. All right.
Awesome. Thank you very much.

Very well spoken young man. Wouldn't be surprised if we're looking at a future Sharks captain right here.
