The San Francisco 49ers Found Their Next Secret Weapon And He’s A Rookie!

Seemingly every single year for San Francisco, there’s an undrafted free agent that comes out of nowhere, shocks everyone, makes a roster, and makes an immediate impact on the team. Last year was Evan Anderson, and in years past, we’ve seen guys like Jordan Mason do it. The commonality for all these players, it starts in training camp and preeason, which is right around the corner for San Francisco. So, in this video, I want to dive a little bit more deeply into an undrafted free agent who’s already started to exceed expectations in Derek Canteen. The versatile defensive back out of Cincinnati first arrived with San Francisco in rookie mini camp where he was trying out and impressed the staff enough to be signed shortly after. Then, during OTAAS, he was able to pick off Mac. Jones. And while he’s still far from guaranteed the roster spot, Canteen’s versatility is intriguing, especially with Lenor’s arrest since he can play basically all over the secondary. He can play outside, inside, and he can even play the safety position. So, in this video, I want to peel back the layers on the player that is Derek Canteen, go over his strengths, his potential weaknesses, as well as his chances of making San Francisco’s 53man roster as a rookie. Initially, when you turn on Canteen’s tape, the first thing you’ll notice is he’s never lined up in the same area. He’s truly a versatile defensive back. He’s a football player. He can play outside, inside, and he can even play the safety position. He’s like Jimmy Ward. And like Ward, he’s not afraid to come up and run support. Over the course of his collegiate career, for instance, he had 204 tackles, including seven and a half for loss. And it’s not like he’s just trying to dive for ankle tackles. He’s looking to blow up these people. and he has a size to sustain himself over an NFL season. He comes in right around 5’11, weighing 200 lb. So, we’d be a perfect nickel. This is especially the case when you look at his coverage abilities. He’s not only great in zone coverage, he also has great ability in man coverage. I like his ability to disrupt the wide receiver early on in his route with press man coverage and then because of his athleticism, he routinely is able to stay glued to their hip pocket. Meanwhile, in zone coverage, Cant does an excellent job of identifying the wide receivers’s route. Basically, the overall play concept, how they’re trying to attack the defense, reads the quarterback’s eyes, and then routinely picks him off, like we’ve seen him already do with M. Jones in practice. Another big reason can make San Francisco’s roster as a rookie is just how experienced and mature he is for a player of his age. He’s already played in 54 collegiate games, so like a player like Pertie, he’s kind of ready for NFL action. And you can really see this on his tape where he’s able to quickly diagnose a running play and shoot on it without hesitation unlike some of his counterparts. The final reason Derek Canteen makes San Francisco’s roster and maybe the most important reason as a rookie is a special teams versatility he should offer. If he’s able to show that he can be a contributor on Brand Boyer special teams unit, he could potentially make the team on that alone. But canteen making the team is far from guaranteed. And now we need to look at the reasons why he potentially won’t make the team. Starting out, while he’s a versatile player, he doesn’t necessarily have a position where his size is best suited. He comes in right around 5’11, weighing 200 lb like I was mentioning. So, he could play slot, but not necessarily an outside corner, and he’s not the best fit for a safety. So, he’s kind of in between all these positions. On top of that, he’s not an athletic freak. He doesn’t run his 40-yard dash in like a 4.38 or something like that. It’s probably more like right around a 4.5, maybe a 4.6. So, he’s not going to blow anyone away with just his athleticism alone. Although, I do think he has nice change of direction like I was alluding to earlier. Another part of Canteen’s tape that’s concerning for San Francisco is he’s an aggressive player. like a player like Ronaldo Green. Sometimes on his tape, you’ll see him just get too grabby in coverage or maybe overag aggressive in the angles he’ll pursue ball carriers at, which could lead to missed tackles at the next level. Still though, I don’t think Derek Can be in a better position. Robert Salah really understands how to take advantage of a versatile defensive back like canteen, so he could have a lot of success with San Francisco. And it could come as a rookie because Wall-Ally does have to out compete some veterans in Trey Brown, Dallas Flowers, Chase Lucas, and Daryl Lutter Jr., he has the capability to do that, and Lenor’s arrest does open up a roster spot potentially. Still though, as an undrafted free agent rookie, Canteen still needs to make plays during this training camp and preseason period, and consistently at that. On top of that, he definitely needs to contribute on special teams to make San Francisco’s 53man roster. If not, San Francisco will try to sneak him onto the practice squad to develop over the next couple of years. And I think he has a potential to be a real contributing force in the secondary for San Francisco for years to come. But ultimately, these are just some of my thoughts on Derek Canteen. And I want to hear your thoughts about the versal defensive back down below. Do you think he can make San Francisco’s 53man roster as a rookie, or do you think he’s most likely destined for a practice squad somewhere? It would also mean a ton to me if you could like and subscribe. It truly helps out the channel a ton. And as always, I hope you guys have a great rest of your
