MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 5, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
just about set to go. And now here’s the starter for the Cubs, Chris Flexon. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strikeout. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think. They can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] [Applause] just misses with that one.
Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it broken back as you drive back to the dugout. Caught
him looking for the K. Mason win. Next up for the Cardinals. And first offering is fouled off outside with a breaking ball. One out. Base is empty. [Applause] [Music] That one finds the zone. That’s strike two. And they’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that’s ruled the swing. It’s a strike out. Well, there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today. Looks pretty tough to start this one, punching out the first two hitters of this ball game. And somebody’s going to have to put the bat on the ball, put it in play, and get something going. Alec Burlson in the box now. No balls in a strike. the one and that’s in there at the knees.
Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake.
Two out. Space is empty. Next one is off the play now. One and two. [Music] Got him swinging and he strikes out the side in the first. We’re midway in inning number one. No score. Back here at the friendly confines. Our starter in this one, Riley O’Brien. Well, that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So on most days he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win and I expect to see that from him in this one today. Ian H leading things off and takes a strike on the ground right side. Gorman throws on to first and a quick out number one.
Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup.
They’re facing a pitcher today who’s prone to giving up homers. So, we’ll see. We might get some big swings here today.
Yeah. I think the key though and the reason why he gives up those homers is that guys are locking in. They’re aggressive and they have a high confidence level. So, I think if that’s the approach these hitters take with the stuff he’s got there on the mound, yeah, there’s a good chance that there’ll be some balls that fly a long way. But you can’t get too big in your swing. Otherwise, you’ll be really frustrated after this one.
Kyle Tucker batting with one down. Takes a strike. [Music] Ow. And now King Tuck goes down on strikes. Seya Suzuki the next Cub to hit. Just missed. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Two and0. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. I’ve missed by a lot and now three and 0. [Applause] Well struck right field back there and that one’s gone into the bleachers. He sends it out of here. His 24th home run of the season and the Cubs have the lead now. It’s one- nothing. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. Now a chance for Pete Crow Armstrong. And that misses one and0. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] Just missed.
Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. [Applause] And now two and two. That one just misses. Well, as a pitcher, when you make a big pitch down around the knees and don’t get the call, it’ll eat at you out there. So, some handle it a little bit better than others. And right here, clearly letting the ump hear it a little bit. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four.
One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best.
That is if you are the offensive side of it. Crow Armstrong leads off first with two down to the inning. [Applause] That one’s in there and the count even at one. [Applause] That one missed. [Applause] Chris with that distraction and a speedy guy at first. He’s in a favorable hitter’s count.
Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in.
So, Jay-Z sends it to first. That’s the third out. Inning over. Cubs get one on the solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. on the north side of Chicago. John Shami and Chris Singleton all set for the start of the inning. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. [Applause] the O2 make it four strikeouts in a row just cruising along. Well, when you commit to throwing an inside fast ball to your glove side across the strike zone, especially with two strikes, if you’re going to miss, you want to miss off the plate in. You do not want to leave it out over the heart of the plate. So, that was excellent execution on that pitch. Really tied him up and he couldn’t get a piece at all. Digging in Lars Nbar and that one fouled off. One down, base is empty. Swing and a ball driven pretty well out towards left center. Pat pulls it down and a couple of quick outs. That sick the third base Thomas.
And up next for St. Louis, Thomas Jay-Z. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Chopped to third. Shaw. That’s the third out. Redbirds down quietly. They’re down one- nothing. Back here at Wrigley Field. Bottom of the second. So up now for Chicago. Nico her and that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Gets the slider in there for a strike. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low end fast ball for some pitchers [Music] on the ground dives and he can’t hang on. No throw and they can’t get the out. Good two-stroke hitting right there. A lost guard for S. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. [Applause] Michael Bush stands in now and watches strike one. Nobody out. Runner at first. And ball one. He’s a bad ball hitter. So even if you get him to chase pitches outside the zone, he still might beat you. Not an easy out by any means. [Music] The 1-1 is fouled off [Music] and the right hander deals and that one is lifted in the air. Scott sizes this one up, makes the grab. One away. batting gate. The third baseman, Matt Shaw. Here is the rookie third baseman, Matt Shaw. Pick off Luke to first.
He’s safe. And there’s the strike right through there for a strike.
Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spin on anything that’s down. Slider got him for a strike three. No need to deviate from the slider right there. The hitter just not making the adjustment. He came at him with the breaking ball. Pitch after pitch in that at bat and evidently there was no answer for it. O’Brien picks over her back in on a dive. Here’s Reese Maguire. Squirts away a little bit. Horner the runner at first with two gone. Come on. Swang and a miss.
One ball, one strike. Let’s go. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Nukebar makes the play. That is the inning. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. We head on down to the top of the third. It’s the Cubs one and the Cardinals nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now it’s the right fielder Jose Fairine. Josemine Flexen back to work. Now one close rule to ball. Ball one. That’s out to center field. Pro Armstrong puts it away for the out. [Applause] Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals. Pahes getting the started catcher. 26 years old and he was born in Venezuela and there’s a foul ball. Next offering is in for a strike. And that just misses.
Really good take, especially with two strikes. That misses the zone. Two balls, two strikes.
The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. and he knew right away it was an off speed pitch. Curve in the dirt straight. [Music] He goes down looking. Now up for St. Louis, Victor Scott. This guy can absolutely fly. I think one of the faster players in baseball. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Let’s [Music] go. Missed with a change up and it’s a ball and a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. And it remains one- nothing here at Wrigley Field. Bottom of the inning. And now Ian H. That one the other way. Gets it to first. One gone. Bottom of the third inning.
Now batting the designated hitter, Kyle Tucker.
Here’s Kyle Tucker. His first at bat was a strikeout. He’s a guy who does it all. With the lack of contact in today’s game, this guy hits for contact, so he delivers average. But there’s on base and slugging, too. Early in the count, you have to be real careful because of that power. But then if this hitter gets a strike or two on him, he’s still very comfortable because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball. He’s a threat deep into the count as well. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. And now the right fielder Sea Suzuki. He’s already homerred in this game. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. He must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat. Foul ball still 0 and two. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two down. Nobody on. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And a curve is down and in. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. And a foul ball. He stays alive. And the next pitch is way outside. Wow. This guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Slings to first and the Cubs go one, two, three. No runs, no hits, no errors. Three innings complete. It’s the Cubs one and the Cardinals nothing. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Brendan Donovan. Let’s go. Next offering popped in the air right field. Suzuki fakes the grab. One down. Now battling the short stop. Mason win.
So digging in. Mason Win struck out swinging his first time. There’s a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. The Cubs up by a run. Top half of inning number four. swaging a drive deep left field. Half ranging back on it and it’s into the bleachers out of here. It’s his eighth home run of the year and we’re all square. It’s 1-1. [Applause] He got on plane with that high fast ball. And look how his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Absolutely crushed that pitch. So it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Alec Burlson will hit next. That one pulled foul. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike and it’s nothing at two and that one missing inside. A sharp slider. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Got him looking. picks up strikeout number seven.
Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long.
Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to, at least for now, allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit him if they can. Now up the Cardinals number four hitter, Nolan Gorman. in there and it’s 0 and one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and a swing to miss.
More and more guys are looking to slug regardless of the count and this situation will keep a close eye on his approach. [Applause] gets a piece and it stays 0 and two and it skips in the dirt.
One ball two strike and he chases that one. Strike out number eight. One for the Cardinals on the solo home run. Call even now at 1-1. Ready to go on four. And now the center fielder Crow Armstrong.
Crow Armstrong right through there for a strike. You know, these Cubs showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there.
Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and rifted into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. And now, let’s see if they force some action with good wheels on the bases. And now it’s Dansby Swanson. First time up. He grounded to third. And that’s in there for strike one. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average. And that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Pickoff throw and he’s back in there. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. In the air, left field, Nuke Bar and there’s one down. [Music] The batter number two, second baseman, Nico. Mo her will come up to hit. Reached on an infield single his first time. Ground ball right side. Could be two. There’s one. Back to the pitcher covering. It’s a double play. Nicely done. And that’ll do it. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We’re headed to the fifth. All tied 1-1. on the north side of Chicago. John Shami and Chris Singleton. New inning getting started. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Lars Nbar, sliced hard but fouled down the left side. You know, these cards, they’re not going to be happy with the ad bats they’ve been having so far. Just one base runner to this point, and it’s not exactly early anymore. They’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. Outside with a breaking ball, foul ball still a one and two count. Well,
he’s not afraid to fall into a two- strike count. Knows the strike zone very well. So much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it’s a ball or strike if he swings or not.
Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another. That one misses. Three and two now. [Music] And out number one on the grab. The battle the first Thomas Saji. Thomas Sajay digs in now. Grounded out his first time off. clips the corner. 0 and one. Action in the pen down there. Cade Horton, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Brazier getting loose as well. All tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth. And a big swing and a miss. This game has been so tight. Feels like the next team to score will win it. Good eye right there. And a swing and a miss. That’s his ninth strike out so far. We’re going to take a look at the pitch sequence of that at bat. And the thing to notice are the pitch locations. every single one of them on the edges of the strike zone. And as a hitter, that can be pretty frustrating because you don’t expect a pitcher to be able to make quality pitches one after another like that. And so those are tough spots to do damage in a great demonstration of pitch command. And it got him a punch out that time. Vermine in now takes ball one off the plate. swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. The one-1 is fouled off. The one two bows it back with two strikes. Ground ball right side. Oh, great stop from his backside and very nicely done for the out. First it looks like making the stop is the hardest part, but feeding to the pitcher on the move, I think even tougher. Great job of hitting that moving target. They’re going to be fired up in the dugout. Back here at Wrigley Field, we head to the bottom of the fifth. So up now for Chicago, Michael Bush.
Bush. And that one missing low.
You know, these Cubs need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings. Just one extra base hit for them. So they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. that makes it really difficult to generate runs. Close pitch there and he’s kind of wondering where it missed. You know, getting a feel for each umpire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from at bat to at bat. Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. And there’s the automatic green one. [Applause] Ground ball right side. It squirts through. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Well, patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count. Just one of those seen high base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. Here’s the third baseman, Matt Shaw. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Just missed.
One [Applause] line drive base hit. throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Oh, just a nice job coming through in a pretty high lever spot right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run. The batter now is Reese Maguire. And it’s fouled off. First and second, no outs. Last half of inning number five. [Applause] Left field. Nukebar settles underneath it. And there’s one away. The left fielder number eight, Ian Half in half up to hit has grounded out a couple of times. fought off foul. Bush on second. Shaw over at first. So one away to first. Might be two. Goes to second for one. Back to first. Not in time.
Oh, that’s great hustle out of the box to get down the line knowing that a double play will end the inning. Good job at the finish reaching out for the bag. Now they got runners on the corners and still an opportunity to pick up some runs.
So here’s Kyle Tucker now who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Runners at the corners with two outs. [Applause] Downing ball here. Rolls. Foul. Line drive. Could be extra bases. One runs in. Half on his way home. [Applause] So, it’s one run, three hits, no errors, and a runner left. We’re through five. It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals one. We’re back and they make a change to start the sixth. The new pitcher, Cade Horton, and he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated RA looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Well, one-run game. And now the Cardinals catcher, Pedro Pahes. Way high there. And that’s ball one. And another ball. Activity in the bullpen. Drew Pomearatz up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Peelbar getting cranked up as well. Ripped to first caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. And up next for St. Louis, Victor Scott. There’s the strike. Scott, 24 years old and he was a fifth round pick in 2022. [Music] Ripped to right, holds it in for the The battle did it. So, two down now and here is Brendan Donovan for two in this one. [Applause] That’s in there. That’s strike one. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office. Even for the skippers, seeing the offense just sputter, not able to get anything going. Right through there for a strike. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. [Applause] Swinging a drive deep right field. Suzuki running hard for it. Can’t get there. This one lands foul. Two outs. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. And there’s a ball.
This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. bounced up the middle and that chance handled. The throw to first. St. Louis goes down in order. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Hard in the order. 345 coming up. It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals one. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Sunny Gray. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is.
So up now for Chicago, Seiya Suzuki. He’s already homerred here in this one. Chicago. That catches the top part of the zone and that is strike one. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him, but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way. Here’s the one swing and a miss moving in the bullpen. Jojo Romero, the southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. line drive, makes the catch, and there’s one gone. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact, and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Armstrong.
And next will be the cleanup hitter, Pete Crow Armstrong. The walk and he’s also singled. There’s a strike. He swings and fouls one off. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now two out. Now batting.
Two out. Space is empty. And here comes Dansby Swanson. Swanson, former first round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Vanderbilt player in college, college World Series player, all that good stuff, but really coming into his own. In for a strike and it’s 0 and one [Music] and it’s fouled away. swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and it’s a three up, three down in it and the Cubs are down in order. They lead it 2-1. leading off with and now the short stop Mason win. He went deep back in the fourth. A pretty important swing of the bat in this ball game.
Yeah, Boogie. He didn’t waste any time. He jumped all over that pitch and saw it the entire way. You talk about squaring it up. He didn’t miss a stitch on the baseball. Horton back to work.
That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. [Applause] up the middle. Swanson tosses to first and the lead off intercept down to open the seventh. You expect to see shorts stops make great plays and it’s especially important in a big moment like that. Nicely done,
Alec Burlsu. Next up for the Cardinals [Applause] in the first pitch misses for ball one [Music] and he pumps in a strike. The one-1 is fouled off. Well, he missed a hitable offspe pitch right there. Not sure exactly what the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does and you’re tied up. Two down. Now it the second base.
Now it’s the second base, Nolan Gorman. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Just missed. One in the air left field. A dive and he can’t haul it in. So, two down now at the plate. Lars Nukebar and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit. But you got to stay within yourself. Breaking ball inside. One ball, one strike.
Typically the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up.
Close but call the ball. Two and one. just missed.
This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. Fouls one away and now three and two. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. battling here as he fouls it away. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the event. Foul ball and it remains a full count. down and that one in the air center field. Cro Armstrong makes the grab and that is that. The Cards leave one and they trail it here two to one. [Music] Back here at the friendly confines, set for the last half of the seventh. Here’s Nico her strike in there and he’s down 02 as he swings through it. I would throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2.
Just trying to protect, keep the at bat alive.
And the 02 and that one upstairs. Ball one.
Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. You don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. [Applause] [Music] Fans another. And that’s three straight strikeouts.
Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up. Two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone.
Now it’s going to be Michael Bush, one for two. And that’s downstairs and outside. Line drive. Scott snags it for the second out. The third baseman number six.
Next to hit Matt Shaw.
Shaw. [Music] ball one there. Two balls. No strike. [Music] ground ball up the middle. Low throw with two outs. You just want to find a way to keep the line moving for the next guy. So, an infield single right there does the job. Nicely done. Just putting it in play and getting down to first to keep this inning alive. You never know what might come next as a result. So, a man aboard, Reese Maguire, the next Cub to hit. And the first pitch misses for ball one. fouled off to the right. [Music] Sunny Gray checks on the runner. Shaw back in on a dive. Shaw off of first with two away. Swing and a miss as he was late that time.
One ball, two strike. Swing and a miss. Sunny Gray with the strike out. One left for the Cubs, but they still lead it two to one. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Drew Palmer. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations.
Reading off for the card
down the third base, Thomas [Applause] first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Fast ball is outside and a foul ball. Makes the count two and one. Inside corner at the knees for a strike to the right side over to first and that’s one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth. Good two seam action right there. Running away from the batter rolled over it got the ground out.
Jos Fairmine next up for the Cardinals. [Applause] Hard ground ball base now and that puts the tying run on base. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that.
One down. Here’s the catcher, Pedro Pah. There’s the strike. [Applause] Here comes the 01. Fouled off. He was late with two strikes. may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here. 0 and two now and a swing to miss down on strikes and to a well that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike and that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can become when they’re up against an 02 count.
You’re just hoping for a mistake somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to. But right there he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals and a strike on the outside edge. Trying to hold a one-run lead and we’re in the top of the eighth. That one inside and now it’s even one and one. Oh, great stop. And that’s a nice play to end the unit in it. So, one hit is all they get. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals one. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Kyle Leyle.
Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup.
Back to the top of the order now. Now, Ian has left.
Three ground outs already. He’s 0 for three. And that drops in for a strike.
No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch in the air right side. Fine sizing this one up. He makes the grab and there’s one down. Up next for the Cubs, the designated hitter.
Next is the designated hitter, Kyle Tucker. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jojo Romero appears to be getting loose. Mton the right-hander also getting loose.
Base is empty, one away near the bottom half of the eighth inning. Pitch misses and a count even. One and one. That’s down and in. The next pitch misses. Three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That’s ball four. tried another fast ball but missed the spot.
Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about.
Next for the Cubs. And next for the Cubs, Sea Suzuki. Suzuki. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Late in the game, everyone gets a little tighter. A way to get ahead on a really good hitter right there. One- run game. One out, one on way out front for strike two.
Oh, two. Here’s [Applause] [Music] the O2. That’s a ball. One and two. Goes down looking. Oh, you know that’s got to be very frustrating for this guy. He knows the strike zone extremely well. And you know what? Good hitters are not going to compromise. He’ll take that punch out, but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything else. So now it’s the fourhole hitter Pete Crow Armstrong swinging a foul out of play. Tucker off of first with two away [Music] at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Fights it off. He’ll see another. Two outs. Oh, and he hit him.
He had two strikes on him and he hit him.
The batter number seven.
Swanson digs it off for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. first offering and it just misses.
Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. And that’s a little bit high. He’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. Let’s go. Let go. [Music] Swing and a miss. It’s two and two. I think he was sitting off speed there. [Music] to the right side. He’ll do it himself. That ends the inning as they squander a chance to pick up some insurance. Cubs strand a couple as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer, Daniel Palencia. Well, he’s the guy they hope to turn to out of the pin to lock down wins. So, this game has gone to plan, more or less. Let’s see if he can wrap it up here. And here’s the St. Louis leadoff man, Brendan Donovan. 0 for three in this one. Swing at a highf fly ball. That’s out to center. pulls it down and he makes the catch and there’s one down. Mason,
he’s two outs away now for St. Louis. Mason win [Applause] and a ground ball to first and it finds its way through for a hit and the tying run is on base. went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it. Man, sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole.
One down, runner at first, Alec Burlson. Next up for the Cardinals, a pair of strikeouts, and he’s flyed to center. First pitch misses. [Music] Just amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days. I never would have had a chance.
Late on that fast ball. Really going after him here. All fast balls to get ahead in the count. Runner on the goal. Pitch misses. Throw to second. Tag out at second.
That goes to show you stealing a base is a tough thing to do and far from a sure thing. Even with big time speed, it’s not easy to catch them. But that was a great catch and throw. Quick, not rushed, and accurate. The Red Birds down to their final strike. Swinging in a miss and that’s the ball game. After four wins in a row, you start to think a little bit that you’re on a roll and that’s the momentum that just takes on a life of its own. Players start hitting up and down the lineup. Never know who’s going to come up with the big hit, who’s going to come out of the bullpen and get the big outs. But it’s a good feeling and you want to extend it.
And your final score here today, 2-1. They hang on to win it by a run. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
