TIGERS POSTCAST: YIKES! Detroit Tigers LOSE To Washington Nationals, Nats Take Series
This is the Tigers Post cast, your instant game reaction for the Detroit Tigers, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Well, goodness sakes. Let’s get the heck out of our nation’s capital as the Washington Nationals take the series from the Detroit Tigers. Welcome in to a live locked on Tigers postcast. I am your host JakeRema. You can follow me on Twitter, Jake_REMA, and this is the Locked On Tigers Post, your postgame destination, free and available wherever you get your podcast. And of course, all part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team each and every day. Make sure you like and subscribe because this is where the magic happens after every single game. Although there was no magic in Nationals Park tonight, at least not for the Detroit Tigers. 11-7 the final in this one. Dietrich ends gets absolutely shelled. We’ll break that down. And the Nats, well, they take the final two games of the series. And the Tigers showed some fight late. We’ll go over that. And a couple of turning points in this one to go over, as well as our biggest talking point. And of course, we’ll have our player of the game as the Tigers look to regroup before the weekend series against the Cleveland Guardians. So, buckle up, dial it in, fire up that comments section. Want to hear from you on a Thursday night, a July 4th eve, so July 3rd before uh we celebrate Independence Day tomorrow. But glad to have you along as always. And we begin where we always do, our biggest talking point. When you were to explain this one and summarize it to your friend that might have missed the game, this is what you’d say.
This is what you’ll be talking about. Look, the obvious one in this is you’re not going to win many games that you give up five runs in the first inning. And when your pitcher gets absolutely shelled the way Dietrich Ends did, it just makes it really, really tough. you’re fighting an uph up uphill battle and that’s a battle that you seem to get out to a winning edge with the three-run first inning for the Tigers. But the way Dietrich Ends was pitching and this is not meant to be disrespectful. We talked about when he made the start for the Tigers last week in that day game um believe would have been a week ago and you know he had the special moment with his family and on field afterwards and so on and so forth. So, make no mistake about it, Dietrich Ends is still a a feel-good story, but uh you know, in four innings giving up seven earned runs, eight hits. I mean, it’s glor glorified batting practice out there. He was uh middle middle repeatedly and uh this Nationals team is is is not going to miss. And uh you know, we don’t have to go through every single one in the bottom half of the first, but uh you know, you get the the um three-run homer to kind of bust it open and then uh Wood had the home run as well. And what a night for um for James Wood, the left fielder for the Nationals. I mean, my goodness. Uh what do you have? Five hits. I mean, Tigers couldn’t get him out literally. I mean, five for five uh two RBI with the three runs. I think we’ll be hearing his name later in the program if you catch my drift. But tonight was kind of a bummer because you know with everything that transpired as far as the postponement on the first game of the series, you have the double header yesterday and you know anytime you roll the baseball out there in a rubber match and a chance to go get a series on the road, I don’t care how good of a team you are and when you know even if you are in first place and have the biggest division lead in all of baseball, you never like to see and I don’t want to call it a poor effort but uh you know playing from a lopsided margin the whole night. Now, that being said, you got to give the Tigers some credit and would not go away quietly. And with this team, you wouldn’t expect them to, but uh two runs in the top half of the seventh, two more in the top half of the eighth. And so close to really busting it open in that eighth. Jav Bayz got robbed on the ground out um to shortstop. It did. Dylan Dingler did score on that, but what a play by the shorts stop CJ Abrams for the Nationals because he keeps that ball in the infield, makes a laser beam throw, skips it off the uh gr infield grass over to first base and retires Jav and instead of, you know, keeping that lineup card moving first and third with another run in and the win the go-ahead run at the plate, you’ve got then two outs in the frame and uh just the one runner on. So, you got to give the Nationals some credit as well. Well, I mean, they drive Mercedes as well, and I said that a bunch last night and kind of hate that I have to say it again tonight, but uh you know, at 13 games under 500, you don’t like losing a series to a team that uh like the Nationals that I mean, I guess we can pretty much say they’re out of it there in the NL East given the way that division is. But, nonetheless, the Tigers are up against it with a pitching staff right now that’s just um dismantled a little bit that’s beaten up. you know, you’re you’re hoping to get those guys back um and have a chance to try to retool and reboost that pitching rotation. I think Kar Montero will go the next time around instead of Dietrich Ends. Um and uh and Reese Olsson, you know, waiting to get him back. Uh, and just the fact that this Tigers team, you know, I I I find myself doing this too of take take uh take a temperature check, hit the brakes a little bit for what this Tigers team has gone through to where they are now. Again, each and every one of us on this lockdown Tigers postcast would sign up for it in a heartbeat. But let’s get to some comments because I stayed up late after a disappointing game. Let’s hear what everybody has to say. Kevin Jeffrey is up first. He says, “How quickly can the Tigers DFA Dietrich ends? The move should have been made in the second inning.” Yeah, middle of the game. Send him back down. And look, again, nobody, and I maybe I shouldn’t say nobody, but I don’t think anyone really saw Dietrich Ends as a um reliable day in and dayout starter in the major leagues. I mean, he’s been around as long as he has. And you know, what’s he made? I think four all-time starts at the big league level. And it’s a great story of perseverance and sticking to it. And like I said, he kind of had his moment, his first start with the Tigers with that win. But um we’re not there now. And uh this is a team that’s fighting to not only uphold that huge lead in the division, but you know, really start to create some space between the rest of the AL Central that has not been good this year. So, um, trottting out Dietrich ends is not obviously a a recipe for winning a lot of games. Uh, last wraps baseball says Tigers need to make a move for a starter well before the deadline. I think we’ve all been in agreement there. If you’ve watched the program once or if you’ve watched the program a hundred times, you know I’m all for buying at the deadline with this team. Steven Lello is up next. I’m at the stadium now. That was a tough one. Well, good for you. I love a little road trip there. That’s some cool stuff. I mean, my goodness, I think road trips to various baseball stadiums as in the summer as a kid was probably one of my most fond memories. And and I don’t know who you’re all there with, but uh Washington, I’ve talked about this before. Nationals Park in Washington DC was one of the last road trips we went on as a family before my father unfortunately passed away. And uh that was some some great memories as as a kid going to Tigers Nationals for a series in a beautiful ballpark, historic town, the monuments, the tours, all of it. So that’s a great baseball trip there. So shout out to you, Stephen Lello. Demetrius McNeel is up next. Jake, after Spencer’s three-run homer, five batters into the game, the Nationals responded by scoring five runs in the inning. On to the Guardians. Indeed, Demetrius, I am right there with you, my friend. And listen, Torque hits the three-run bomb. I’m texting buddies. Yeah, Torque bomb, you know, and and uh how quickly it turns and that’s why, you know, it just goes to show you got to get all 27 outs and uh we all know that Java prods to stop taking. Sounds crazy, but he is taking meatballs. Very true. I would also add that for whatever reason this defense was so sloppy for the Tigers tonight. I mean, Zack McKinstry making some errors. Jav Bayz making some errors, three errors as a team. Um, and you just don’t expect to see that. A couple of wild pitches, pass balls, and, you know, the Nats were stealing bases, and aside from, you know, kind of the late life that this Tigers team showed, there really wasn’t a lot to to be, uh, particularly pleased with tonight for the Tigers, um, as far as the team performance as a whole. All right, Drum is up next. He says, “Get Heeney and Chapman at the deadline.” Also, defense was horrible today. Yeah, Andrew Heene is a good one. Um, Aldis Chapman, I would agree. I mean, both of those two players would would beef up this Tigers pitching staff, and that’s that’s definitely needed at this point in time. Kevin Jeffrey, Riley Green, two for 11 in the series. Yeah, two three year on homers, though. Let’s uh relax a little bit on that. I’m a Riley Green defender, I think. But uh no, I look I I let’s not get too reactionary. Maybe you know what? I’m not gonna tell anybody how to feel. If if you’re worried the sky is falling and you’re worried about this Tigers team, that’s um that’s your prerogative. That’s your right. I’m not there by any means. So, um disappointing night, sure, but not anything necessary to sound the alarm for. But I am curious um why and maybe somebody in the comments can help me out here. Why today wasn’t a day game when it’s getaway day, but the night game I mean that’s going to put the Tigers into Cleveland late late tonight and then turn around and play tomorrow. So I was curious why this game wasn’t a day game on getaway day, but uh we’ll see if it impacts the Tigers and if they come out a little laxidasical on Friday. All right, Benjamin Brewer wants to know who were those pitchers the last two days. Was that truly the best we can do? Yikes. Yeah. Um, listen, Tigers pitching staff’s beat up and it’s a bullpen day. Um, and then today it’s who you call up to be the starter. And I mean, he went five, what did he do? Five scoreless his first start. Uh, whatever it was, he was scoreless. He entered with a uh 0.00 RA as Dietrich ends, of course. But I get it. I hear you. I hear you. All right. Um, one more or a couple more comments. The Dietrich ends honeymoon is over. Indeed, it is. And then from John Broki, when Riley Green is hot with two to three run homers, AJ Hinch sits him out the next game when he is hot and then starts in next game. Now cold already, 0 for four with three Ks. You have to play Green when he’s hot. Well, John, I think Green plays pretty regularly. Um, I don’t know if I necessarily agree with with all of that, but you know, to each their own. Like I said, that’s why the comments are welcomed on a live lockdown Tigers Postcast. All right, let’s go ahead and keep the lights on at Lockdown Sports Detroit Lockdown Tigers Postcast. And I want you to be thinking who your player of the game was. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. I’ll tell you what, I thought the Tigers were going to do it. I thought they were going to make a comeback and that B or top half rather of the eighth inning, you’ve got the Tigers have already added a run. You got runners at the corners and Jav Bayz hits a hard ground ball that looks like it’s heading to left field, but the diving stop from CJ Abrams. The shorts stop saves the ball from going into the outfield. And on top of that, he rises to his feet, chucks it across the diamond and makes the play on Jav Bayas to end not necessarily end the threat because that was the second out of the inning, but keeping the ball in the infield uh prevented the runner from getting to third. And if it was a single would have been first and third, but just the one out and the Tigers with the go-ahad run at the plate and the tying run at first. But the play by CJ Abrams turns this game around and that’s really where I felt like the Tigers threat came to an end and the Nationals hold on for the victory. Got to give them a lot of credit though. They were the better team tonight. How about our player of the game?
This is the locked player of the game. Indeed it is. And to be fair and uh we’ll call it how it is, the Washington Nationals are the better team. And when you have a guy go five for five like James Wood did most of the time that’s going to be your player of the game. Two RBI had the one home run, three runs scored total for the Nationals left fielder James Wood. He is your player of the game. So the Tigers got to turn it around. Get ready for the Cleveland Guardians. They have a 12 and a half game lead on the Cleveland Guardians, but it’ be nice to continue to stretch that division lead. And I mentioned Reese Olsen should be back in the lineup and indeed he is scheduled to start on Friday. Thought it was going to be this weekend. Wasn’t sure which game it’d be. So that’s a welcome sight to get Reese Olsen back on the bump for the Tigers. You got to love that. So join us following tomorrow night’s game. Happy Independence Day. Enjoy your Fourth of July. If you’re out on the boat, out on the water, shooting off fireworks, whatever it is, stay safe. Enjoy the best holiday in the world. That’s right, I said it. Maybe that’s controversial. Take we talk about that. I love Fourth of July. I think it’s such a great holiday, America. USA. USA. But that being said, nothing more American than Detroit Tigers baseball. And we’ll have a Fourth of July special for you tomorrow night. Tigers Guardians from Progressive Field. The Jake whatever. I know it’s not Jacob’s Field anymore. That was a long time ago. Is it still progressive? I Someone’s got to help me out that in the comments. They change it all the time. Uh but that being said, hey, better day tomorrow. Let’s hope for it. Happy Independence Day. Happy 4th of July. Hopefully you all enjoy it. And then maybe end your night with me on a live locked on Tigers post. Until then, have a wonderful night. Talk to you next time.
