Chicago Bears Offseason Talk || LIVE with Greg Gabriel
and the last thing the most important piece is we’re going to take the north and never give it back
i’m I’m I’ve told you before I’m a fan this is our second meeting you are nice all right you are nice with yours all right
i just want to shout out to Swift Sports Network
what’s up Swift this Kyler Gordon just want to do a quick shout out to Swift Sports Network with all the latest news on the Bears if you ain’t speaking facts we don’t want to hear the sports
go Bears what’s up guys we’re back it’s been almost a month since me and Greg were able to do a live show here greg nice to have you back man as always how you doing today
i’m doing good as as usual you know when you got the lead in there and I I see like the new Halis Hall and that is so much different
from what we had
it is yeah it It looks It’s nice there though isn’t it
yeah well the whole building that you know where it comes around the practice field
that’s a brand new building and then they extended the other building actually on both ends so I mean just the square footage is is crazy how much more square footage is football Ops is all in that building at the end of of the practice field that’s where the weight room is locker rooms all that
okay okay i mean it’s beautiful it’s beautiful it looks It looks great there i actually love the way it looks now hoping this year our new coaches can uh practice closer to where the fans watch though i mean Flu had a habit of practicing away from where the fans stood and you always get a bad view so it made training camp not as fun and I think Ben Johnson will do a better job at that
well I you know they actually the ground screw at least it was uh when I was there Kenny Morac who runs the ground screw they would designate to the coaches the fields to use
you know and they got to alternate the fields to keep them all in good shape
well that was back in Bourbon A right
well that’s that’s Well yeah that was that at Bourbon A where we handled around then man now they they limit you they kind of you’re just kind of
well there’s there’s not that much space but even the you know you got the two practice fields right outside of Halis that have been there for a long time and then the other two on the other side of the Payton Center are brand new but they alternate those you know might go on one for a couple days and the other because you want to get the wear and tear on the field less and less and and they’ve got Bermuda grass in there which comes back a lot faster than the old fields when I was there was uh Kentucky blue
oh I I I actually like that Kentucky blue grass it always looked good it looked really good and um I loved the practices at Burbanet i went for 20 straight years down there in Burbanet great experience every year great time i feel like the the the city kind of embraced the Bears it was kind of a smaller town but they embraced the Bears and there were a lot of Bears fans there so I TJ’s
Oh yeah i’ve been all over the place there but that bar right on the corner we used to you know we used to get around with golf carts
so and we stayed there was like a apartment complexes just off campus that were really part of campus and that’s where the um the coaching staff played the the players were in in a different dorm and but we had um these golf carts to take us around and so you at nighttime you could go to TJ’s and across the street kitty quarter across the street there’d be about 15 golf carts that were all members of the staff and stuff that were over at TJ’s having a pop
oh man you guys you guys are wowing i remember the players riding around on the golf carts some players would avoid the golf carts and walk um but you’d always you get a chance to get an autographs whenever they came by you on the golf cart
it was always a good time but I do miss Bourbonet i love how the setup is at Halis Hall it’s beautiful and then anyone who got a chance to go when we had the joint practices in Indie um the co that that year was that 2020 that was
that was at the Colts complex right or was it at their practice place
it was north it was uh north
okay yeah okay i I’ve been there i’ve been there a couple times you know I went down as Ballard’s bet uh guest because when the first time I went down there I think was 19 for and I went there because I you know I was working for the XFL i had to go to like six different camps spent two days at the Colts camp but those two days there they were at uh um right at the regular complex
yeah and then I think two years later they went up to that other facility
okay okay but if we multi-purpose facility I mean that thing the place is enormous
beautiful too i mean if we ever get a chance if the Bears ever go back there guys in the chat listening take your time and go over to Indie and go there i felt like it was it was closer access than any Bears training camp since back in the Bourbon A days you were right there up on the field watching those practices um it was beautiful too it was kind of like a uh what is it um a field of dreams type situation where
there were just so many players there was a beautiful landscape you could walk up the injured players were on the other side with kind of on their own field and you just walk right up to the field and almost talk to those guys i don’t they you didn’t want to talk to them too much because they were over there rehabbing tmaine Edmonds was over there terrell Smith his I think it was his rookie year last season he was over there too but it was it’s a good time there man if they ever go back to Indie I know it was probably a flu connection but it was a great time
i I I was there at their camp when uh Andrew Luck had gone down and at that point they thought he was still coming back and then like two weeks three weeks later he retired
yeah I remember that andrew Luck man and I man there were rumors about Andrew Luck coming back to the NFL for years after he retired years no he I he got the [ __ ] kicked out of him literally he’s at Stanford now
yep he got his dad took over the XFL for a little bit there
yeah and you know what was funny is that we’re at the the um we had XFL meetings in Houston and you know his dad was running the meetings and stuff and this was like right when the news broke that his kid was retiring he didn’t say a freaking word about it good guy though
great guy alvuck is really a good guy
yeah i mean and this is right now we’re kind of in the probably the slowest slowest part of the season when it comes to the Bears off season there have been a couple moves around the NFL as we get past the June 2nd deadline and teams can now sign players without the guarantees as much guarantees going into this year and well it doesn’t count towards the draft formula
well it’s really the cutting of players too you get the you can release players and then the uh signing bonus doesn’t come all into this year it gets it’s goes into this year and next year the remaining signing bonus but yeah it but that I I I think in the last couple years when teams got to be uh do that June 1st designation even though the stuff didn’t come off the books until June 1st
the player was gone and uh free to make another deal so I I think team a lot of teams have taken advantage of that used to be a lot of cuts after June 1st there’s very very little cuts this year
yeah it’s they kind of I mean when they did that and I think you could do two players a year it kind of takes the need to cut players after June 1st out if if there’s a guy that you want to cut it also is better for the player as well because it gets them to free agency earlier on gives them more opportunities to find so I think it works better for both ways you know I mentioned the other day when I was with on with Aldo you know we’re talking about the the UFFL and there’s been a couple guys signed but I think the number I think their season is all screwed up when when it was the XFL we started our season the week after the Super Bowl
yep
and we were done the first week of May and anybody who was on a roster could you know go to an NFL roster then and take part in the offseason program or whatever well now everybody’s done and you’re signing a guy he’s got five weeks off to get his his uh body back together especially if it was a playoff team because the championship game was just last weekend but the really the ability for those players to make a team I think is less now than it was under the format we used because they end their season so late i just don’t think it’s it’s conducive you know for the players they’d be much better off and they don’t you know they they want to start later because of the weather i get that but if they want to be a minor league for the NFL in a way they they got to start have their start date earlier
the other thing about it is I I think fan engagement when when the XFL I don’t know how the UFFL did this year but I feel like when it was right after the Super Bowl you’re still in that mindset of watching football when the UFFL season took place this year I saw very little advertisement for it i saw the games were on TV but I myself didn’t even watch much of them normally I’m a guy who watches the UFFL or XFL but I felt like the timing this year would just kind of
Well there’s one thing they did too that that that is different and we were we had training camp down in Houston the whole league did when I was there and then you moved back to your your home city
and we were the hotel we were at was the Marriott right on the uh University of Maryland campus and we practice at a sports complex just about three four miles away so outside of DC and that was the same with with all the other clubs the seven other clubs well now they’re based in Dallas and they stay in Dallas
everything is in Dallas they they travel to the city for the home games so you don’t have that daily update of what’s going on with your local team because you know if if they play a Sunday night game or a Sunday afternoon game you know they’re getting into town like a like a road team on Saturday the day before the game and I think that hurts not being in the city hurts i get from the from the standpoint of cost it’s a lot cheaper the way they’re doing it a lot less expensive probably a better term to use but I I just think they lose some of that fan interest and fan engagement when we were in DC um we opened up at home the first week and it was a little chilly but it was probably in the 40s it wasn’t that bad and you know that stadium we use it’s right across the street from the baseball stadium in downtown DC it’s a soccer stadium and it was packed we you know we had three home games when I was there uh before the pandemic hit and we sold out every game man you know how they do there now as far as attendance I don’t know
yeah i mean the um when it comes to the off seasonason though do you one of the biggest stories right now i I want to touch on it just a little bit i know we’ve talked about it a little bit and you expect there to be some hold outs heading into training camp do you still um about any of the Bears guys
no I because I had in fact I talked about this Monday with Aldo okay i had a conversation with some agents
different agents different agencies about the second round and the one guy had been an agent a long time and he feels that the full guarantees are going to go just around to the Bears pick which is number seven and could be a little deeper that maybe as far as 10 yeah that’s what I feel too and then after that it’ll start dwindling goes because you got to use you use last year’s contract as a basis for each pick and he was rattling off the numbers you know the la last year everybody got at least three full years guaranteed in their contract but you know when you get down to like the the lower picks in the round they might have been getting 15 20% guaranteed in the fourth year
yeah and and and sometimes maybe a little bit less but he thinks now with with you know the damn breaking the first two picks are full guarantees he goes I don’t expect it to go past 10 now the other agent said I said do you expect hold outs and he goes well it’s probably worthwhile to hold out but I don’t expect that you’re not doing your client any services holding him out especially a second rounder he needs to be in camp and so you know his his thought was that where he thought they had different thought bases he thought they should get full guarantees he didn’t think it was worth holding out over where the other guy didn’t even think he goes look it might go as far as 10 but that’s it and then but he goes “Somebody’s got to give in meaning sign a contract without a full guarantee in the fourth year.” And he gave me some points he goes “And I’ll tell you who it’ll be to be and I can’t say it because that would be you know giving up I’m going to say what’s the word I want not valued information but uh just private information but he said based on who the agent was uh and the player and stuff he goes I look at this is a weak spot this is a weak spot this is a weak spot and I think just because where Luther Burden went there’s a quarterback that went right after him I see the quarterback probably getting the full guarant guarantees so Luther
if the quarterback signs before Luther does then that lock and he gets a full guarantee that locks a full guarantee up for for Luther
yeah and I think that’s probably the most likely scenario honestly and Luther is honestly he’s a guy who was mad he didn’t go in the first round anyway so on his side he might want the full guarantees if the other guys are getting it as well and I can see him getting it he’s talented enough i’ just just get it done but I want these guys in gear what happens Swifty is when you get and you can call it collusion you can call it whatever you want but I said to the agent I said “Oh wait a minute you guys,” because I I try to play like middleman and when I have these conversations I said “Well you guys collude too.” He goes “No we don’t collude just the league colludes.” And I said “No wait a minute you guys talk to each other.” I go “So and so could call you and say “What are you doing with that contract?” That’s collusion theoretically and he couldn’t dispute it but he wouldn’t admit to it so I mean it works on on both sides but he goes you know the league is going to pressure the teams or the management council or whatever to basically say hold the line you know I I I’ll just make up a number let’s say in in the case of of burden which is 39 and I don’t know what the exact figure was but so we’ll make something up so nobody can quote me that I said that it was correct let’s say it’s a 40 it was a 40% guarantee last year
well theoretically maybe you could go 45% this year on the fourth year but you know now because the the agents are going to fight for it i don’t expect anything to happen until probably a week before camp opens up and then the damn overs how about this there’s only 40 players as of the other day only 40 players from the draft unsigned 30 of them are in the second round
yeah that’s the wild one man it’s It’s And they’re all And it’s been so much nonmovement in round two those first two guys signed well over a month ago now it’s
been They signed right away so it’s going to be a hold up and then it’s vacation time too so but hey when you’re doing a deal all you got to do is be on the phone
guy doesn’t have to be in the office
to get the deal done
i’m hoping a couple of them get done soon i don’t want this dragging into training camp or even getting close to training camp
well I think it’s going to get close i I think that’s a lock it’s going to get close for the one reason like a lot of people are on vacation and they’re on vacation until like the week before
yeah but um Ben Johnson said he’s not going on vacation maybe for a week ben Johnson said he might take a week but this is his time he uses to get ahead so
yeah but I’m sure he’s not putting in 12 hour days like he usually does
yeah but he did comment on it that this is the time he likes to really put in work and get ahead of the rest of the league so I I like that about him he’s a grinder for sure and that’s no no quit in good in our personnel department because when I was there because if you weren’t a grinder you couldn’t work for Jerry
i love that
jerry was the ultimate grinder
jerry’s my favorite GM we’ve had other than Ryan
excuse me it got to be a game i knew he’d always get there between 7 and 7:15 in the morning so I got there right before 80 and 90% of the time I beat him in in the office and it was strictly a game and you know I only lived 10 minutes from the office so it was easy going home I would not leave until he was out the door
until Jerry left yeah yep i It was just I I there was no way that he could say he worked longer than me
yeah but when he was gone I was gone right behind me like three minutes
you said “Was that was that Jerry did he just leave?” You’re running out the door with your stuff
his office is right right across back in he’s like “Oh I forgot my bag where you going Greg?” No that’s wild but I did want to a point um this coaching staff i I I I feel like that hasn’t been talked about enough how complete and how much how many good coaches there are on this staff and what that can do as far as an impact for our young players we have a lot of young players on this roster polls has spent a lot of a lot of the last three years bringing in high draft picks first second third round picks a lot of them and now we have coaches that can develop these guys how big of an impact do you see that making and it’s not just Ben Johnson when you talk about Dennis Allen Antoine Randle L um you have Al Harris you have Dan Rousard there just Eric Benemy there’s quality coaches all over the staff and I I believe it’s it’s one of it’s one of the best coaching staffs by far we’ve had since the Lovey Smith era
well the the only thing I I’ll say to to contradict you and I’m not really contradicting you is that on paper that’s the case
yeah exactly
now we got Now we got to see
it yeah we got to see it and um what I like is there’s a good mix of younger coaches and old vets there’s there’s three coaches on this staff that are on the wrong side of 65 you know and and which is fine
a lot of Super Bowls too though
yeah yeah the linebacker coach Rashard and uh oh the the uh assistant Dline coach Young and you know all those guys are are past social security age
uh and and Juan Young the defensive line coach he he had already retired once but I mean he he’s a legend he’s one of the best defensive line coaches ever be it college or the NFL and but you know he’s a guy who just he loves football
yep no and he wanted to I I think a lot of them see that they came to Chicago and say similar things that they they want to build something special here they see the talent they see the talent on the roster they see the talent in this coaching staff and I I really think there’s an opportunity for this team to be really good hopefully really fast obviously there’s going to be growing pains we got a lot of turnover on the roster we have brand new coaches everywhere and the new starters in the trenches are the thing that’s going to make it the toughest because you’re going to have at least five new starters in the trenches if not more and you talk about the offensive and defensive line
oh I agree but I you know it’ll be interesting to me who the starting tackles are on defense because you got to figure Grady Jared has one my money’s on Javon Dexter you know
okay and but then that means your Billings is your your third tackle
who had a hell of a year before he got hurt
he did he did and and was really a difference maker on the defensive line granted hey they’re all they’re going to play within a rotation
i think after after the first series though you kind of at that point you can bring Billings in on obvious rundowns if that’s first and second down that’s fine but I I think Dexter is the guy who should get more snaps overall and that could And what it gets down to though Swifty is um it’s really it it’s people want to say I’m a starter but it’s really number of snaps
y and I like Shamar Turner too man i mean I think
I was doing a player yesterday for one of the agents and
one of the games that I did was against LSU and I purposely did that game because LSU’s defensive line or not LSU Texas A&M one of the games was against Texas A&M and I picked that game because it was you know their defensive line was so strong last year there’s four guys on that line that got drafted so and and three of them got drafted real high so you put that on you watch this guy now he was playing in in this game he’s playing a lot of nose and really even you played at about 290 you’d never know it that’s a strong dude and he’s really quick off the ball a lot of athleticism a lot of power when he played at 290 he still he still moved very is that it didn’t look like he lost a lot of athleticism to when he played
i I would say just watching him and then watching him in pursuit and and his play speed might not be as fast as Tommy Ran but it’s not far behind i I’m going to say he’d run in the 47s
yeah and I I love his potential i think he’s a guy who he could also drop some weight and become an edge rusher um good question here someone asked “Who do you think leads the team in sacks this year?” Uh my bet would be on either it’s it’s 1 A 1B it’s Montes Sweat or Javon Dexter for me I do think Grady Jared is probably the third option but I think it’s going to be Sweat or Javvon Dexter with Grady maybe taking up more double teams uh well it’ll be interesting how he runs that that inside pass rush to see that theoretically your your outside guys get more sacks and I the one guy I’m really interested in in seeing how he develops so granted Dial is going to be the probably the starter at that other end but I I I I think Austin Booker it’s my gut feeling is going to take a big step this year austin
and he’s a guy that you know I I started watching him not quite midway through the the 23 season so going into the 24 draft and I had no idea he was coming out because at that point you know he was he was a junior and but he was just making plays and and I watched Kansas because Ballard’s kid was the backup quarterback and so you know and he got into a lot of games that year and um in fact interestingly this is I shouldn’t say this because it’s probably not for public knowledge yet but uh I I they haven’t announced it but it’s it’s thinks this kid got named captain as is a pure junior and he’s not a starter
oh which says something about the kid
good kid yeah I I love that um someone asked Squeegee asked “Do you have a does it’s about Tayvon or uh Trey Hendrickson trade?” Now I will say the Bengals have re-engaged in contract talks with him i don’t think he’s going to get traded but he’s asked specifically
i don’t think he’s getting traded period but one way or the other they they hold his rights for one more year and um they’re you know trying to go as far as they can he isn’t going anywhere and then there’s a rumor that well you know they got a an impass with Shamar Stewart so well maybe the Bears will trade for him i mean where do people come up with this stuff yep i know I said that one man i There was actually some talk I read an article someone else posted an article about him going back to Texas A&M if uh
there was so I actually I read someone the rule is if he went back to Texas A&M um there’s something in the I don’t know if it’s in the NFL players agreement or in college but if he did that he couldn’t reenter the draft next year you know how if he holds out and sets out the whole year he could reenter the draft he cannot yeah but you can re-enter the draft but he can’t go back to school and play he’s he’s done playing which is different the in in college athletics the rules per sport are different where you know a basketball player can enter the draft and pull out two or three weeks before the draft and he can go back to school that’s not the case with the NFL once you enter the draft you’re in the draft and and you’re done with your college eligibility
yep 100% um what do you think what’s Luther impact what’s Luther Burden’s impact on this team um I think it could be slow starting off maybe a little sporadic but long term I see him as a dynamic weapon on this offense a guy who’s going to be very similar to DJ Moore maybe even get some manufactured touches this is the guy that if you if you think of what Ryan Paul’s ultimate dream of what Vis Jones Jr could have been in the absolute best case scenario that’s Luther Burton you know I was I was thinking about this just actually a little while ago because on the NFL Network there this morning they were repeating the the Bears Hard Knocks
yeah saw us watch some of it and and actually was the second last episode that I turned it on and it’s when Bailis had been switched to running back during camp and then he had a 39 yard touchdown run against Kansas City I think and you know it was uh and right away I thought Ben Johnson mentioned well you know we could even use him at running back when he was talking about Luther so you know that that just entered my mind that they they could like you said create ways to get him the ball without interfering with some of the other stuff because don’t forget you got Lovelin and you’re going to want Lovelin and Kimett in at the same time because one’s a Y and one is an H and right and and and so it’s like somebody’s going to be sitting for some plays it’s it’s just the way it is because of the number of players they have
instead of having Swift in the back field there you bring in Luther Burton and just like you can with a running back you have the option of putting him in motion and then putting him lining him up like a wide receiver but you can start him in the back field and it just gives Ben Johnson more options of things he can do
right you could and you could put him in motion and have an empty back field so yeah there’s a lot of things you could do and and you could theoretically give him the ball he did carry the ball a few times at Missouri it’s not like it’s foreign to him
yep um good comment here by uh J2K he says DJ Rome and KT will get the most targets early and then Lovelin and Burden are going to take time to build trust with not only Ben Johnson but Caleb Williams get some rapport with him i honestly think this my guy I think it’s going to be Romo Dunay i think with Rome being a top 10 pick Ben Johnson made a comment at some point that Romo Dunay was his favorite wide receiver in last year’s draft the draft that had Malik Neighbors and Marvin Harrison Jr now that could have just been um just food word service yeah lip service but I mean either way Rome was a guy who’s just absolutely talented and I think Rome is going to be the wide receiver one at some point i do expect DJ Moore to have a big year but look out for Romo Dunay to lead this team in uh touches i I I could see it you know what what jumped out to me i mentioned this talking to Aldo it might have been I don’t know if it was Monday or the week before
mhm
but you know he had had it one of the interviews with with Rome up there on the screen and we’re looking at and I go pull up an interview from last year with Rome and look at the difference in his face
oh yeah
he’s a lot thinner in his face which means he’s lost body fat he said he says he’s bigger but he’s lost body yeah he built his upper body he he there was an article I read on it where he talked about it where he didn’t in college he didn’t get as much press and guys weren’t as strong at gra and he said the other thing is like guys are grabby and like they would do little grab movements that don’t get called for holding or pass interference you know but right guys are so strong that it affected him more getting off the line and in movement when he got tugged on and little and grabbed that he wanted to build his upper body so that was his big thing that he focused on this off season and he said big difference his upper body is a lot stronger he thinks he can beat press coverage he can beat guys in the physical contested situations he can body guys often better so he put in a lot of work on that and his route running so I think he’s going to have more confidence as well but I love
It’s a proven fact too Swifty is that when when fast guys lift they get faster
yep and you wouldn’t be a bit surprised you know he was a 445 guy 444 guy coming out wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he’s a little bit faster than that right now yeah and he’s a guy he’s such a smooth route runner too i mean his footwork and athleticism for a guy his size i just love Romans’s potential he was drafted in the same year with Caleb Williams so they’re going to continue building their chemistry and rapport going forward i think Rome is on on track to be the number one wide receiver soon but I do expect DJ Moore to have a big season as well
yeah and I DJ being who he is he’s been a Pro Bowler he’s very good he’s one of the best after the catch guys in the league uh and I and I agree i think Burton is very very similar if you look at film of DJ at Maryland and Burton at at Missouri they’re very very similar players type players and their their size is almost identical so it it’s you got really two of the same guy it’ll just be interesting how Johnson uses these guys and that’s what’s going to be really fun to watch is and we’re not going to see it in the preseason you’ll see it in practice if you go to practice a lot but not in the games itself and now you know in in saying that he could just you know throw out a play here play there he’s not going to game plan in the preseason but just to see how some things work under you know with the bullets flying and live contact and and you could see a couple things in the preseason but not anything crazy that he might use in the regular season
100% yeah and I just I’m I’m excited for Rome he’s probably uh my one of my favorite players on this roster if if I was out there he’s just a guy in this offense you compare him Rome Luther and DJ there’s just so many things you can do with them i J2K had commented that DJ Moore fits that Aman Ross St brown role perfectly but I think I think Romo Dunay also fits that role and he can be an ex receiver but Luther Burton also profiles as a slot guy so I think we’re going to see all three of those guys moved around a lot and then you mix in Coloulston Lovelin and this offense is just going to have a lot of dynamic weapons and Ben Johnson’s going to be able to be even more creative than he was in Detroit where most of the time there at wide receiver he had a Monro St brown and some journeymen now Jameson Williams came on late and finally had a breakout season last year but most of his time in Detroit he didn’t have stud wide receivers and he definitely never had this kind of trio of wide receivers in Detroit so it’ll be fun
all he had though was with Williams and when he started to come on because he came out of college hurt
oh yeah you recall so but
to ACL so
yeah he had like unbelievable speed though he’s faster than any guy the Bears have but you know you mentioned Alman Raw St brown ej is a lot faster than St brown could ever think about being
st brown is quick he didn’t time very good uh he jumped good but he his time was like 457 458 something like that that people thought he’d be a a 45 448 guy something like that and he ran a lot slower and that’s why he lasted later in the draft than he did because he didn’t run good
yep those slow 40 times man they really kill wide receivers in the draft
absolutely it’s a stopwatch driven position
yep for sure um but I am excited about this offense i think they’re going to I think we’re going to have fireworks and I think it’s just going to be a really fun offense to watch is there anything that you think that you’re excited to see when we get to training camp this year it it’s really how it all comes together because you know what they were like throwing a whole playbook at them during OTAAS and and uh the offseason program now you got to really focus on what you actually want to use and you can you’re going to change things week to week on how some plays look and you might create matchups where you know one week DJ could be the Z receiver and another week he could be the the slot receiver and do the same thing with you know with Rome and with Luther so it it’s how they use these guys and Lovelin is so athletic that he can play outside or in the slot too so it’s it’s just going to be interesting how it all comes together and being that the you know the young guys both Luther and Lovelin did not really participate in the offseason program from a physical standpoint even though they did mentally how quickly can they grasp everything yeah 100% and like you said about Lovelin he’s a guy who you could have him line up in the slot as your big slot receiver you could have him be the ex receiver at sometimes you could have him line up
as a traditional tight end you can put him at fullback he’s a guy who he’s going to line up all over the place and he’s a mismatch almost anywhere you line up with him and you saw a little bit of that when you watch Ben Johnson tape in Detroit he moves Sam Laora around a lot in the goal line in the red zone he would use him as that big X guy a lot and throw jump balls up to him he’d also have him as that big slot guy a lot so you’ve seen a lot of that
and he’s not anywhere near as big as Lovelin is
yeah he’s
you know he is he’s like 6’3 and three/4ers lovelin’s got two full inches on him
and more athleticism he can jump higher as well so yeah um Levante asked if we could see Tyler Scott at running back i do not know tyler Scott is too small tyler Scott is is like
he he might weigh 185 but he looks 165
yeah and he’s I also don’t think he’s as dynam You want guys at at the running back even if they’re going to touch the ball out of the back field you want them to be dynamic with the ball in their hands and those guys the guys on our roster that fit that bill there’s DJ Moore there’s Luther Burton and then you could maybe even do that with Romo Dunay but Tyler Scott no I’m not doing I I I’d maybe do you could do Olmiday Zakius maybe but I’m Tyler Scott no that’s just he’s got to try to make the roster as an outside receiver and really have a big camp if he wants to do that because our wide receiver room right now is pretty loaded no it’ll be interesting to see who makes it
yep we got guys like Miles Boyin um Devin Duivere who’s going to make it I believe due to his special teams prowess
the guy was a two-time Pro Bowler and that you you when you have our top three receivers locked in and then you if you add Zakias and Dee that’s five right there and you might have one or two receivers make it and that’s what Tyler Scott’s trying to do is make the roster so yeah there was a re and I can’t think of his name there’s I got the roster here
um there there there’s a free agent from Texas A&M that I really liked on on tape was that JP Richardson
no uh
no john A walker
yes walker and and he’s a big receiver that runs a 445 [Music] yep and then Miles Boyin also big and fast a lot of good guys j2k said he liked Walker as well i had him on my UDFA um video i haven’t watched tape of him since then but J2K says he has great hands it’ be interesting to see these guys in camp if they can gel with Caleb Williams if they can stand out but yeah the wide receiver room there’s going to be a battle to make this roster for sure you know Boyin Chase Clayool was real good in college and hasn’t really done [ __ ] since he’s been in the NFL but he has that he’s also big and fast like
Oh he’s No he Yeah he’s a he’s a 44 guy and he’s 220 pounds and he’s actually a pretty good special teams player
but as a receiver he had done anything and you thought when he was coming out of Notre Dame that he was going to be pretty good
yep i’m a I’m a Notre Dame fan so I watched him in college as well he was a guy he projects well but he just hasn’t done much in the NFL you also that offense was a little they really never had a consistent number one receiver outside of maybe Hollywood Brown um down there in Baltimore it’s been a little different now but the offense has operated around deep shots broken plays and Lamar Jackson running the ball yeah um a question from John he asked who has a better year this year the offense or the defense that really depends um the biggest advantage for the defense is probably the most returning starters and Dennis Allen being a more veteran coach but I think there’s a little bit more talent on the offensive side
yeah I Well generally speaking defenses start out quicker than offenses
and you got a veteran unit it’s not going to be night and day different than what they were doing last year and so I would expect that the defense will probably start out faster it’s just how long is it going to take the offense to get in sync everybody get in sync with each other
yep
you know is six weeks of training camp going to be enough time and that and that’s the really the the unanswered question we’re not going to know until game one and game two
yeah and a couple people have commented that uh Gaier Alexander who the Packers cut a week or two ago has signed with the Ravens good to see Gierre Alexander out of the NFC North he was always a guy who uh he kind of was one of those guys who uh trolled Bears fans and always had good games against the Bears so I’m glad to see him gone anything that hurts Green Bay is good for me
yeah i I you know I’d like to know what happened up there because I mean this is this is a Pro Bowl caliber corner and some of the comments they have made you know something like well you know dependability wasn’t there he was hurt missed a lot of time the last couple years and you know for what he was making and I I get that part you gota if you’re getting paid 15 million you got to give back 15 million in in production and that wasn’t happening so so I get that but he’s still really a talented guy so that tells me there’s something hidden in between and it could be locker room [ __ ] for all we know
and I know he had a couple of locker room there were a couple of stories about him last year that came out where him he said something that caught the media’s attention i wasn’t sure exactly what he said or I didn’t really pay attention to the stories but I definitely saw he he said a couple of things last year that caught everybody’s attention so maybe that was a problem with the coaching staff who knows you know but you know as long as they keep losing it’s fine with me so uh what do you expect over the next five weeks um basically the this is the time when coaches you say they worry a lot this time this is when guys can get in trouble and
well yeah in the front office too it’s like you know I I don’t want to hear the phone ring at 1 in the morning because somebody got arrested or got in an accident or something like that you know you’re you’re out of contact with the players as far as you know being in the building every day uh a lot of them are are where they came from living wise they’re not here in Chicago uh it’s just you don’t have control you don’t have that dayto-day control so it it can be nerve-wracking and and we’ve seen it happen all the time during the off season you know might be four or five players that get in some sort of trouble
uh or like I say get get in an accident or whatever that that [ __ ] happens and that can have an effect on your team so you every year you worry about it what was it Jason Pierre Paul he blew half his Dan hand off
on the 4th of July playing with fire
i remember that year yeah that was that was tough he actually recovered and had a pretty good career after that but he always had to play with like
Yeah like a cat almost a cast on his hand he lost I think
two or three fingers
yeah tough one man it It was tough but yeah this is the time of year not a lot of news going on but we are getting closer to training camp i know training camp tickets will go on sale or they’re free but they sell out in like 30 seconds they go they’ll come up sometime in the next two or three weeks but um awesome guys i appreciate everybody that watches and Greg um any final thoughts or anything you want to say oh let’s just get through this next five weeks quick
and get these guys signed yeah that well that’s going to happen i just don’t see it happening until you know they report like around the 24th of July pro you probably won’t hear anything on those guys until around the 20th of July that’s just my gut feeling i’m hoping by the 15th let’s get it done by
I mean that’d be nice but you know it’s like I say it’s vacation time it
it only takes some phone calls to get the deals done but still they got when people are on vacation they’re not uh really in a hurry they could have some phone conversations get the you know agree to some things but and I’m not just talking about the Bears but you got 30 second round picks that haven’t signed yet so it’s really the whole round outside
we need a couple of them to get done and then that’ll motivate things to get rolling
well yeah you you get somebody that that takes less than a full guarantee somewhere in the round it’s where is that guy stacked in the round then the rest of it will start to fall in place
hopefully right in front of Aussie Trapillo
yep
i appreciate you Greg see you guys bear down
see you later

I don’t agree with the Tyler Scott comments I think if he gets opportunities, he could be somebody you know being that we had the situation last year with our coaches and how we was running offense I think that kind of hurt him so I think he just needs a chance

Great stuff! Always a true pleasure hearing what Greg Gabriel thinks about all the goings on. A great Bear and a benefit to everyone that listens. One of my favorite shows to check out when Swift and Greg get together.
Andrew Luck “literally” got the shit kicked out of him?! So, feces actually went flying across the field? Wow!
My favorite collaboration… Watch everyone…
