Detroit Pistons Sign & Trade Options To Upgrade The Roster?

Welcome to Pistons Talk podcast. On today’s episode, what we’re going to be discussing is a compiled list from the Detroit Free Press. So, Marcen Kofa put out a nice article talking about five players the Detroit Pistons could acquire via sign and trade with the Dennis Schroeder talks. We’re going to be looking at all five of these players, uh, breaking down their contracts, and I’ll give you guys my favorite target personally with this list. So, let’s get straight into today’s episode. So, here’s the list that Omari Senova came up with. If you guys are subscribed to the free press, you probably read the article this morning like I did. So he had Malik Monk from the Sacramento Kings, Harrison Barnes from the San Antonio Spurs, Kyle Koosma from the Milwaukee Bucks, PJ Washington of the Dallas Mavericks, and last but not least, Sam Hower from the Boston Celtics. So we are going to go left to right. We’re going to start with Malik Monk. kind of break down his contract details and some stats with him and then kind of just make our way all the way down to Sam Hower. So, let’s talk about PJ or not PJ Washington, Malik Monk, excuse me. So, with Malik Monk, we talked about him on the podcast a couple of days ago. He’s going to be 27 years old going into the 25 26 season um starting in a few months. Now, he he’s still relatively young, you guys. And I know there was a lot of push back when we talked about him a couple of days ago. A lot of you guys were like, “Yeah, I’d be okay with PJ Washington.” A lot of you like, “I don’t want another guard on this team. We need more forward depth. We need way more size.” Which I get it. I get both sides of the fence with the arguments with Malik Monk. But when you kind of look at just his contract, he’s going to be making $18.7 million going into this season. The following season, he’ll be making 20.1. And then in 2728, uh he has the option to make $21 million, but he does have a player option if he does want to opt out of that. Uh this season, he had careerh highs in both points per game and assists per game. He had 17.2 points a game and 5.6 6 assists per game with the Sacramento Kings. I think there’s a lot of appeal there. Um, from Detroit side, I know he’s been a target since day one of free agency. Uh, the Pistons, you know, trying to acquire him via trade. There’s been talks about Jonathan Kaminga and the Kings. Those talks have kind of died down um, as of late. Uh, we’re going to have to wait and see what does happen uh, with the Malik Monk trade talks or if Sacramento’s just going to run it back. I saw a report also that could be a possibility with the Kings. I think a lot of things are still up in the air and a lot of things are still available. But I think if you’re a Detroit Piston fan, Malik Monk does make a whole lot of sense on your basketball team. He’s a combo guard. You can play him at point guard. You can play him at shooting guard. Very versatile. Can really handle the ball, shoot the ball. And I I think you’re getting a guy that is under 30 and kind of grow with that core and, you know, lead your bench unit. But that was the first guy in the free presses article talking about his sign and trade that the Pistons could pursue using their cap space. The second player is I feel like he’s been playing for 15 years and I had to look it up. He’s only been playing for 13 years. I think uh coming up this season it’ll be uh 14 and it’s Harrison Barnes. So he’ll be 33 years old uh when he does uh start this season. He’s going to be a free agent at 34 in the 26 27 season. So, he’s just going to be in a $19 million cap hit. Uh little fun fact about him while I was, you know, doing prep for this podcast uh today for you guys is he played all 82 games this season with the San Antonio Spurs. So, he’s a very durable player. Now, I I think we can all agree that Harrison Barnes at this stage of his career is kind of trending downwards, which that’s okay. I mean, he’s an aging veteran. And I know that there was some interest um a few years ago from the Pistons sides of acquiring him. I don’t really know what happened. I don’t know if it was the Piston side that didn’t want to pay him. I don’t know if it was Barnes’s camp or why he didn’t want to come here, but he’s been in San Antonio during their rebuild. And San Antonio looks like uh they’re not going to be rebuilding anymore. They’re going to be really trying to compete with the West uh building around Victor Wenyama. But another little fun fact about Harrison Barnes this year is he actually shot a careerhigh from three, you guys. 43% from three on 4.4 attempts a game. Uh only put up 12 points a game uh with the Spurs, but he’s a forward now. Could could there be a world where you have Tobias um and you have Harrison Barnes as your power forwards on this team? Sure. I don’t really know as a Piston fan uh how excited I would get about Harrison Barnes. I feel like he’s just kind of like a placeholder until you feel like you’re ready to upgrade that position. And I feel like that’s what Tobias is there for right now. Like Tobias Harris is a really good placeholder. He’s a good band-aid, but when you’re ready to rip that band-aid off and like get a bigger name at Power Forward, you’re ready to make that move. And I don’t really know of, you know, an expiring $19 million Harrison Barnes. Um, for me anyway, it’s just my opinion. I don’t know how like how excited I would be about a Harrison Barnes, but maybe the Pistons front office feel like he could be a good locker room, good culture fit guy for them. So, the third guys on this list is Flint native Kyle Kosma. I feel like I’ve talked about Kyle Koosma quite a bit on this podcast over the past two years. Um, I get it. There’s the Michigan Connection. Um, and with him when I was kind of digging into the contract and digging into his stats, like I don’t know what happened with him because you you kind of look at his stats, especially this year. He fell off a cliff. I mean, this guy was a 20 point per game scorer with the Wizards during the rebuild in 2223 and 23-24, but since then his production has just fallen off a cliff. um he’ll be 30 years old entering this season and then the 2526 season. You guys, uh he’s set to make $22 million uh going into this season and then $20 million in 2627 and he’ll be a free agent in 2728. Now, I don’t really know if you trade for Kyle Kosma, does he start over Tobias? Do you play him at power forward or do you like playing him at small forward? I like to assume uh that JB Bickerstaff and the Pistons really value Assar Thompson in the starting lineup at small forward. And I tend to like value Assar Thompson as small forward um in the starting lineup. Maybe Koozma can kind of be that, you know, that bridge starter if you want to bring Tobias off the bench, but he still does have around $40 million, you know, left on his contract over the next two seasons. And you guys can go look at his production. just points per game, free throws are down. Like I don’t know if playing in Washington really affected him. I don’t know if he’s going through something personally or father time is just caught up with him, but going from a 20 point per game score to a 14 and a half point per game score with the Wizards um and the Milwaukee Bucks this season. really eye opening like how how much he’s just fallen off I guess is the term I I’m going to use but I he is an option I don’t know if I would really be lining up to trade for Kyle Kosma 20 point per game Kyle Koosma um I probably would but you know 14 15 point per game Kyle Kosma 60% from the free throw line I don’t really know if I would be lining up uh to try to trade for him and bring him on my basketball team right know um if he is going through anything like you know personal you know hope hope he gets the help he needs or whatever like that but um he is an option. The fourth option they had in this article from the free press uh was PJ Washington. This is actually one of my favorite targets that they did put in their article. So a little bit about PJ Washington you guys. He’s going to be 27 years old to enter this season and he’ll be making 14.1 million and he will be a UFA the following summer in 2627. Had career highs in rebounds at 7.8 per game and shot 38 per from three. That was only the second time in his career that he shot 38% from three on this year was 4.2 attempts per game. But BJ Washington, I I think throughout his square, he’s just been a very solid, productive power forward uh when he was with the Hornets and recently with the Dallas Mavericks. And we we talked about it when we were discussing sign and trade stuff with the Kings and Malik Monk. Like, I really think the Pistons need to upgrade the backup power forward position or just the power forward position in general. Tobias Harris did a really great job last season, but I think we can all agree when we’re watching Tobias Harris versus Simone Fontekio, I think we’re kind of like crap because the production just slipped. It’s not the say Simone did a bad job. It’s just I think he had a very difficult time adjusting to JB’s system where he was playing power forward because I think Simone is more of a natural small forward. That’s just my personal opinion. But I would really like PJ Washington if the Mavericks were willing to, you know, trade him and give him up. But who who knows with, you know, acquiring Cooper Flag? Like, is there enough room for a PJ Washington in the rotation? I’d like to think so, but you never know. Crazier things have happened in the NBA. Like, I just saw a report a couple of minutes ago that there was just a seven team trade completed. First time in NBA history. So, um, we know how crazy NBA offseasons can be. We know how crazy NBA trades can be. Like, no one thought Luca Donic was going to get traded. Um, not comparing Luca Donuch to PJ Washington. I’m not. I’m just saying I I think PJ Washington um is it’s getable. He’s a getable guy. I I think especially with uh them acquiring Cooper Flag in my personal opinion, and I would love him uh in Detroit. I I think there’s situations where um he can start if Tobias is in foul trouble or maybe injured or maybe you can convince Tobias to come off the bench. Um I’ve always been really high on BJ Washington. I I think he’s just a really solid player in my personal opinion. He’s one of my favorites on this list that Omari uh from the free press did compile and put together. Now the last guy we have on this list is Sam Hower from the Boston Celtics. Now, out of everybody on this list, this guy has the best contract, and it’s not even close. Um, when you look at the production that you’re getting from three. Now, Sam Hower in his four years in Boston has been a 40% three-point shooter, you guys. 40% three-point shooter. That’s elite. He’s a bench guy. Eight points per game this season. And you look at his contract going into next season, $10 million for a 40% free uh three-point shooter. That’s a bargain, especially with the way the cap space is going up. You look in the 2627 season, $10.8 million for Sam Hower. The following season, 11.6 and then in 28-29, 12.4 and he’ll be at UFA in 2930. And he’ll be 28 years old going into this season. you guys, if you’re looking to acquire a forward, a small forward, power forward, combo forward, if you will, that shoots a high volume from three, I think Sam Hower, best contract on this entire list that the free press did come up with. If you’re looking for another sniper off your bench, um maybe you’re trying to fill that tech roll with Tobias and you think you can get a Sam Hower uh to back up a Tobias Harris, I guess go for it. But you’re just looking for a sniper and a really good contract. I think Sam Hower makes a whole lot of sense. But just kind of talking about each of these guys a little bit of like what they did this season, you know, careerh highs with Malik Monk for points per game and assists per game. Harrison Barnes playing all 82 games. Kyle Kosma kind of falling off a cliff production wise. And PJ Washington just being a really solid consistent uh power forward for the Mavs. and Sam Hower just being an absolute sniper from three. Um, you know, my two favorite targets on this list are PJ Washington and Sam Hower. Um, I’ve thought about the Monk stuff for a little bit, but it’s sounding like Sacramento um might just be running it back and they’re okay not being in the Kaminga sweep stakes. Sounds like the Warriors want a lot for him. Um, I like Harrison Barnes, but I think that’s why the Pistons have Tobias Harris. it would just be another Tobias Harris in my personal opinion. I don’t know um how that would like kind of gel and work for the Detroit Pistons. Uh the Koozma thing, it’s just it it’s it’s sad to see him, you know, go from a 20 point per game score to a 15 14 point per game scorer and he’s only 30 years old. Usually guys that fall off a cliff like that are a little bit older, but we don’t really know what’s going on with him. PJ Washington is pro would probably be my my favorite target personally. You guys, I don’t know how you guys feel about PJ Washington, but I feel like he’s just a perfect fit for what the Pistons currently need. It’s a a forward, a a power forward that can rebound, power forward that can shoot threes at a pretty good clip, um, and can either start or back up Tobias Harris, and you know, Sam Hower, for what it’s worth, you can never have enough three-point shooters. But I’m going to wrap up this podcast really short and sweet cuz we’re going to be seeing you guys in a couple of hours. 7:30 to be exact. We’re me and Sean Murphy are going to be recapping free agency for you guys so far. Hopefully, no breaking news happens while we’re going live. Uh but that hey, you never know. I can’t really predict uh when someone’s going to get traded and when they’re not. But let me know what you guys think of this list uh from Amari Sanca at the free press. Which one of of these targets or these players if you’re the Detroit Pistons in a signing trade situation would you want the most? Me personally, I told you guys PJ Washington would be my pick, but I would love to hear from you guys if you’re watching live on YouTube right now. Or if you’re an audio listener, leave a comment like which one of these guys that the Free Press, you know, outlined would you want the Detroit Pistons to try to acquire via sign and trade. But see you guys in a few hours. As always, go Pistons. Take care. Peace.

Today I reacted to the Detroit Free Press article listing five sign and trade candidate for the Detroit Pistons.

  1. As constructed at this time, and considering the five names, I’d like Harrison first, and then Kuzma, Washington, Hauser, Monk, in that order. PJ is the best fit, but I think that’s at the expense of Tobias. Barnes and Kuzma can both back up Tobias and Ausar.
