MLB LIVE🔴 Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals – Jul 6, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
All right, first pitch coming up. Pitching for the Cubs in this one. Colin Ray and Singi. It’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy.
Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look off, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Brendan Donovan leading things off, but takes a shot. on the ground to first. He takes it on his own and an easy out to start the game. Let’s take a look at our lineup. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now. Wilson Contrarus and Boo. He’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man, they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So, watch out when he steps in. Mason Win stands in now and watches strike one. Bunting for a hit. He pops it up. He’s safe. on with a bunt single. Well, singing that was really nice looking. Able to get it down and in a good spot and he makes it look easy. Bat angle was perfect. Barrel stayed above the hands. Could almost walk to first. One gone runner at first. Now it’s the right fielder Alec Burlson. Swinging a ground ball towards first but fouled. Boo the runner at first needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. Win over at first with one away. Ray the tall righty 220 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. Come on. And that misses. And it’s a ball to strike.
One strike. [Music] Called strike. A sneaker at the bottom of the zone. Line to left. pass stands it for the second out. Here comes Wilson Contrarus. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Well, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch.
Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Lars Newbar the next to hit. Swing and a tapper that rolls foul. Rip towards third and that’ll do it. So, the Cards strand a couple and now it’ll be the Cubs turn in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here at Wrigley Field and for the Cardinals here this afternoon, it’s Miles Michaels. What should we keep an eye on here? Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. Bottom of the first. So, up now for Chicago. Ian Hat popped up to the left into foul ground. Pah sizing this one up. makes the catch up against the wall in foul territory. Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup. They’ve had a great year offensively. As good an offensive team as you will find. They’re deep first and foremost, but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else. It’s uh very intelligent the way that they use their team. And I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing teams, especially in a big game, big series. Swinging a foul straight back. One out. Base is empty. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. And that just misses.
Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swing and he breaks his bat. Aronado on the run. Throw to first
and they get the out.
That is the right fielder. Two outs. Space is empty. And now the right fielder Sea Suzuki. That one finds the zone. One and one. Two out. Base is empty. That just misses. And the count even. One and one. That one in there across the letters in the dirt. Two and two. [Music] And that one missing low and down on strikes he goes. And it’s a three up, three down inning. And the Cubs are down in order. Scoreless after one. Second inning set to go. Here’s Nolan Aronado. Aronado. And he pumps it a strike. All one. Nope. That’s inside.
Ed Drummond behind the plate calling balls and strikes. Maybe one of the most respected umpires around the league.
He’s not the kind of umpire that you’re likely to notice back there. And that can be a huge compliment really. So, if you’re just kind of quietly doing your job, staying consistent with your calls, hitters, pitchers, managers, even fans, they’re all going to appreciate you. Ed Drummond, he’s that kind of umpire. That one in for a strike. Two and two. Got him. And that’s the first out. Clearly looking out over the plate on that outer third. And that pitch finished right down the middle. Just a little bit in and he couldn’t pull the trigger.
Here’s Nolan Gorman. [Music] He swings and fouls one off. No score here in the second. Next offering is in for a strike. Liner caught it second. Well, baseball can be cool, can’t it? I mean, sometimes it gives and sometimes it takes away. He did everything right on that swing, but he’s got nothing to show for it.
So, two down now. And here is Pedro Pah. Let’s go. That one found hard the other way. Right-hander kicks. deals swing and a ball lifted in the air and it drops in and that extends the inning.
Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but
he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock.
Runner at first with two away. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. And that’s in the dirt. Counts one and0. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first here in the top of the second. And another ball. Two balls, no strikes. check swing and he went and it’s two and one.
One strike. And that one just missed off the outside edge. That’s to third Tucker. They take the force out. Third out and that ends the frame. So, one left for the Cardinals. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Here at Wrigley Field. And now Pete Crow Armstrong. He set a new career high in home runs this year. and Sigy, he’s just trying to set the bar as high as possible. Now inside just missed.
As a veteran out there on the ball, you’re trying to establish both edges of the plate right here. He’s working inside. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even up the middle. Quinn on the run. Sends it over to first and he gets him. Nicely done. You got to be kidding me. Did you see that throw? Not really, Boo. I mean, it happened in the blink of an eye, it seemed. But thankfully, Statcast is here to help us out. I mean, you don’t see many throws across the infield that get up into the 90s. So, he really reached back for that one, and he had to to get the out. Dansby Swanson stands in. First pitch. Not close. Fast for a strike. That’s out to center field. Makes the grab for the second out. Michael Bush now at the plate. And Singy, we already know he’s going to finish the season with a new careerhigh in home runs. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. And that one almost hit him. [Music] Hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul. Two outs. That one in the dirt. The countdown two and two. Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Three up, three down for him. There we play two full. No score. Back here at the friendly confines. New inning getting started. And now the DH Brendan Donovan. Ray back to work. Just missed. Slashed foul down the right side. Then hook off into the seats. That’s in there. One and two. Swings and misses. Struck him out. got him swinging on that pitch away to finish him off, but everything early in the bat was in tight. Really challenged him in there with some competitive pitches, not letting him get his hands extended, but of course that eventually opens up the outside part of the plate and he just wasn’t able to adjust. So up next, Mason Win. That one outside ball one. [Music] The shorts stop takes the ball.
Top of the third, no score. There’s a swing and a drive and that one hops the wall around first heading for two in safely. It’s a double and his second hit.
Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle.
Seriously, we’re starting with this already. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. He’s 0 for one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. 10. Win over at second. One down. squirts away a little bit. Man at second
that misses the zone and now three and 0.
Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter’s count. Next offering is in for a strike. And a foul ball. He stays alive. And that one lifted in the air center field. Cro Armstrong pulls it in on the run. No, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football.
And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. One for one with a single so far. Right through there for a strike.
All one’s the count. Just missed. Two outs and one in scoring position. Here we go. Late swing fouled off. Swing and a ground ball out to short and a base hit. Rounds third headed for the plate now. A long throw home. It’s off the mark and he scores and it’s one- nothing. still able to come through behind in the count right there. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Lars Newbar. He’s 0 for one. And that one hammered and that’s a foul ball. That one finds the zone and it’s on two. No balls. Two strikes. That’s a little bit low. swing and a high-fly ball right field. Cro Armstrong sizes this one up. He’s there. He’s got it. And that’s the third out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now one- nothing. Major League Baseball is on the show. And we’re back. Set for the bottom of the third. And now the batter is Carson Kelly.
Kelly. And that one fouled off. And that drops in for a strike. [Music] Foul ball still 0 and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up.
Highf fly ball right field. Burlson snags it and there’s one down. a short stop. So, here’s her now singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field and that’s out of play. A foul ball. One down, base is empty. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Nukebar right there to make the grab. And there are two down. Matt Shaw the next Cub to hit. Swing and a miss. Strike one. Now, this guy is just filling up the strike zone right now. Don’t want to get yourself in an 02 hole. You better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch.
Just missed in the air right field that gets down for a hit. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw in. Tag and he’s safe. It’s a hustle double. [Applause] Back to the top of the lineup. Ian Hat will hit next. Yeah, there’s the strike. [Music] Shaw out at second with two down. And that one goes straight to the back stop. And on the wild pitch down to third goes the tying run.
Have to be really sure you can make it safely to third when you’re in scoring position and two outs. Got to get that run across. Very important. Does a nice job of reading it. Gets to third base now just 90 ft away. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Two outs and a runner a third here in the last half of the third just off the outside edge and it’s two and two.
That pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound. Clearly pretty frustrated so he’s going to have to collect himself a little. in the air center field. Scott brings it in and that is the inning. One left for the Cubs and it remains one- nothing. As we go to the top of the fourth, the batter now, Nolan Aronado. Aronado in his 12th season, 33 years old, and he was a second round pick back in 2009. And ball one. You know, these cards showing great discipline at the plate, and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. [Music] 20 fouled off left side. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Swings and misses. Two and two.
Two balls, two strikes there. That misses off the outside edge. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals. 0 for one so far. That one pulled foul. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it.
Go and two now. That one just misses.
Too close for me, partner, to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons, he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Grounder might be two. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Shaw for one to first nod in time. Great effort there. Well, that was clearly a double play ball, but the bobble unfortunately prevented him from being able to get two. But a good job to stay with it and make sure you got at least one and a foul ball. Man at first, one away. Bush drifts towards it, puts it away for the out. Now at the plate, Victor Scott. He’s one of the faster guys just by pure sprint speed in the majors. Singing, you got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. Yeah, the first offering is not close. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. And that’s in for a strike. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boog, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. Throw in holds the lead runner at second. Two on now with two away.
So now here’s the DH. Brendan Donovan for two in this one and that’s pushed foul off to the left and out of play. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. We talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid. Nothing. Next offering is in for a strike. Remember Mark Katse is a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed. And that’s downstairs now. One and two. Yeah. And I figure you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night.
That is true. puts it in the air out towards left center. Half makes the play and that is that two left on and midway in the fourth it’s the Cardinals one and the Cubs nothing and welcome back to the ballpark. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Kyle Tucker. line drive and this might be trouble. Around first and hustling for second. Not in time. And that’s a leadoff double. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squirmed it up with the welltimed swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Seiya Suzuki the next Cub to hit. Off the plate. One and0. Tying run in scoring position. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And that one fouled off. Let’s go. Let go. [Applause] Man at second. That misses the zone. And that’s ball two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Highf fly ball lifted into air right field and there’s one down. Now the center fielder Armstrong. Pete Crow Armstrong digs in now. grounded out to short in his first trip. Fast ball for a strike. Hoo over 80% of his first pitches are strikes. You’re doing that, you could have a really good day out there in the mound.
That breaking ball is in for a strike and quickly it is nothing at two. [Applause] Swings and he breaks his bat. makes the catch for the second outer. Swanson digs in. Flight to center. His first time. He’s 0 for one. Ball one there. Next one off the plate inside and the count now two with nothing. And another ball. Man on second. Two down. Fought off. Foul. Swang and a highf fly ball left field. Pretty well struck. That’s back there. And that one’s gone into the bleachers. He’ll take a jog around the bases. His second home run of the series. And they take the lead. It’s 21. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the gets the home run. Bush batting for the second time and that strike one. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back there. And that one is off the top of the wall. And that’s a double. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that back. So, runner at second, two down. Carson Kelly, the next Cub to hit. Flyed to right, his first time on the inside corner for a strike. Runner at second. Two down. That missed by a lot. One and one. Swag going to ground their foul first base side. [Applause] The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch.
Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Cubs had two on this homer and this is now a 2-1 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Ready now for the fifth inning. And now the shorts stop. Mason win. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. You know, these Cardinals doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side. The numbers tell us they’re averaging more than a hit every inning and they’ve only struck out twice. So, they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball. And downstairs on the ground and that’s just foul. And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle on the ground to third, slings it across,
and the leadoff hitter retired in the fifth.
That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. Next to hit, Alec
Burlson. [Music] That one misses. And that is ball one. Swing in a line drive. base hit out of the center field. So, they get a man aboard with a one out single.
Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. That pretty much split the zone down the middle. And those are the ones where you got to make them pay. One down. Wilson Contrus now up to the plate.
Picked up an RBI in his last at bat. Still their only run of the game so far. Outside corner for a strike. Here’s the one.
That clips the corner. That misses. Going to count one and two. Burlson leads off first with one away in the dirt. No advance. Good job behind the dish. That one down the line and foul ball. Just misses there. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. Hit in the air out to center field. He’s got it and there’s two away.
That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch.
Now up for St. Lewis Lars Newbar. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Chicago. Two outs. Swinging a foul straight back. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. One ball
in the dirt but kept close. Here’s a one, two, two balls, two strikes [Music] in the air. Foul off first. BCH makes the grab and that is that. The Cards leave one and they trail it here two to one. Back here at Wrigley Field, we head to the bottom of the fifth. Nico her will come up to hit.
Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Popped up and that’s foul. Now one and one. I got a ball. One strike on the ground to short win. tosses to first and a quick out number one. Now batting the second base and up next for Chicago, Matt Shaw doubled his first time. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start.
Just off the outside edge. Ball one. Called strike right there.
Base is empty. One away. Last half of inning number five. Swing and a foul. Pushed off to the right. And that will get out of play. Swing and a miss. Struck him out of the slider and there’s two gone. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled.
Back to the leadoff spot in the Cubs lineup. And next for the Cubs, Ian Hap now will bullet to second base, but he’s got it to end the inning. Cubs are down quietly as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead. Righty reliever out of the pen, Kade Horton. And he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here.
So now it’s Dolan Aronado. He is struck out and he is walked. There’s the strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Caleb Thebar up and throwing for manager Craig Councel. Pomerance also getting ready and that’s outside swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Has room and he makes the catch. got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open, backside collapsed a little bit, and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. And up next for St. Louis, Nolan Gorman, late swing, fouled to the left. The Cubs up by a run and we’re in the top half of the sixth. Swang and a miss. 02. It might be time to choke up a little bit, get that front foot down early, maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. That was pretty nasty. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. Hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely. But you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after him. Pah in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Breaking ball misses down and away.
One and one popped up. Bush brings it in for the third out. Offense held in check there. 234 do up in the home half of the six. It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals one here at Wrigley Field. Bottom of the six. So up now for Chicago. Kyle Tucker. Nicholas back to work. Tucker who’s been an allstar and a gold glover. Activity in the bullpen. Phil Mahon getting ready to go. Romero warming up as well. swing and a miss as he was late.
One ball, two strikes. Foul ball still a one and two count. Swing and a miss. Curveball in the dirt up with it. Fires to first in time to get him. one away in the strikeout. Well, classic pitch sequencing there to change eye levels for the punch out. That fast ball on the pitch before was up. It was very competitive and that gets you thinking that he might try to climb the ladder, but then the curveball out of that same tunnel just falls off the table and you can’t make contact. Suzuki in the box again takes the strike. Next pitch is downstairs. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. One down. Base is empty. gets a piece and stays alive. Hard hit but right at him and left. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. Nothing to show for it, but in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Crow Armstrong up to hit for the third time as he lays off inside ball one. Off the mark there and it’s two in one. You got two balls, one strike. Right drive, base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Miles Michaels out of the game and he kept him in it even though he’s in line for the loss right now. New arm when we come back. Now,
new arm of the mound for the Cardinals, Sunny Gray.
Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. And now it’s Danby Swanson. He had a big swing back in the fourth, a two-run homer, and that helped them get the lead.
And what a swing it was, Boo. Poetry in motion. And those are the type that you hardly feel when you connect with the baseball. Just so smooth. A great feeling off the bat. Two outs. And that’s a base hit. Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. First base Michael. And now the first baseman, Michael Bush. First pitch misses. There’s the strike of the knees. Well, this is a higher leverage spot and I love the way that he’s turned things around. He’s got two outs now ahead in this count and he can pretty much dictate what’s going to happen next in terms of the pitch sequence. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Applause] Two on, two outs and a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Cubs strand a couple, but they still lead it two to one. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Caleb Thebar.
Well, you see the RA very solid, and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Well, one-run game. Here’s the center fielder, Victor Scott. One for two. And the sweeper is in for a strike. [Music] He’s under it. Brings it in. One away.
Oh, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean, that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited, came out of his mechanics, and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it off. Unfortunate for him. [Music] Donovan batting with one down. Takes the strike. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. And there’s the strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. [Music] looking to get the tying run on base. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was.
The O2 fouled off and they’ll do it again. Foul ball still 0 and two. Trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. One down, base is empty. Misses inside. It’s a ball in two strikes.
This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. and lines out to third. That’ll drive you crazy as a hitter if you let it. I mean, he could have hit that ball more on the screws than he did and yet he’s got nothing to show for it. Hang with him. I know the feeling. So, digging in, Mason Win. That clips the corner. [Music] Fouled off down the right side. [Music] Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. [Music] That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Two down, nobody on.
The shorts stop takes a ball. Swing and a miss. And that is that. And down in order go the Cardinals. And our score remains 2-1. [Music] And we’re back. And here’s the catcher, Carson Kelly. First pitch doesn’t find the zone.
You know, these Cubs digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. Throws across the diamond and one away in the bottom of the seventh. Here’s Nicoer. And first off is fouled off. Base is empty, one away here in the bottom of the seventh. BS it back with two strikes. Fast ball right back to the mound. Gets it to first. Two up, two down. The batter number six, second base.
Two down, base is empty. And up next for Chicago, Matt Shaw. And the curve is down and in. And there’s a foul ball. Man, this has been a real important inning in relief. I mean, so far they’ve been doing a great job holding that deficit at one.
Cut out and miss. Struck him out. And the Cubs go one, two, three. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Cubs two and the Cardinals won. So, they bring on the veteran Drew Pomerance. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Well, one-run game. Now, it’s the right fielder, Alec Burlson. One for three. First pitch and he just misses. The Cubs bullpen with some action. Raone Hermman the closer is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. down to the dirt swinging miss and it beats him for the first out after the drop. Third strike. Pretty good strike out right there to start this eighth inning. Down one. Any lead off base runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting. But now this offense has to switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate.
Here’s Contrarus. Now there’s the strike. swing and a highf fly ball left field on the move. Makes the grab and there’s two out. Here’s the left fielder, Lars Newbar. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter, not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. Middle away. That’s a base hit. And the tying run is on base. Hey, whatever works, right? Doesn’t have to be impressive. Just a simple soft liner into center field for the knock right there. Maybe a little bit fooled by the pitch, but he did a good job of staying through it. And that allowed him to fight it off and just get enough behind it.
Making a move at first on the pinch run. Garrett Hampson.
Here’s Nolan Aronado. Yeah, he swings and misses and it’s nothing in Warren.
Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So, if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit, but you got to stay within yourself.
Next offering is downstairs. Typically, the outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front. Make sure that runner on first doesn’t come all the way around to score and tie this ball game up.
Keeping him close.
He’s got plus speed, but in this situation, all eyes are going to be over there trying to keep his lead tight. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. [Music] One and two here. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. One, two. Now runner takes off, waves to Bender for the strike out. So, one left for the Cardinals. They’re down two to one. Now
back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Number 49.
And he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. in half. Up to Hill for three in this one. And that’s a little bit high. And that’s ball one. inside edge. Just missed. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. So, here’s Kyle Tucker now. Pickoff move to first and he’s back in on a dive. [Music] That one misses. That’s five straight action in the pen down there. Phil Mton, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Can’t find it here. That’s six straight balls.
Got to be real careful here. 200. He’s hunting for his pitch.
Rudder at first with no outs here. check swing and he went and it’s two in one now. And there’s the ball.
This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it.
And it’s filled up. I got three and two.
H gets his lead at first. Nobody out. [Music] Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Goes down looking. Well, that’s a pitch that slider from an opposite handed pitcher that you usually see very well, but for some reason he didn’t pick it up and it just kind of got into the strike zone late. Gave up on it a little bit early. Suzuki
the next to hit takes outside. Now it’s one and0. that one outside and that’s ball two. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. And another ball. One-run game. One out, one on. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone.
Sometimes being lucky is a swing and miss. If he makes contact with that pitch, probably hits into a double play. And ball four, two aboard. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. First and second, one out. Pete Crow Armstrong the next to hit. That one missed.
Well, this is a critical spot for both the pitcher and the hitter. You can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations. The one hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Headed for the plate now. A long throw home. It’s offline. The run comes in and they lead by two. Got the job done to put him up by two. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box, got a pitch he liked, and he got it done.
Two on, one out. And here comes Dansby Swanson inside. And that’s ball one. Traffic on the bases with one already in here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Swinging a foul out of play. They had a foul ball. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. Sends him down on strikes. That was pretty nasty.
No, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position in two strikes. Just put the ball in place. somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. Right side hard hit. Contras takes it to the bag. That ends the inning and they limit the damage, but they pick up one run on the RBI single. Last chance coming up here for the Cards. back now. And on the mound, the closer Raone Hermon and this is the best way to make your major league debut. No one on base.
Yeah, you’re already going to be a little nervous out there. So, I think it’s a nice job by the skipper to get him in here without any added pressure with traffic on the bases.
Nolan Gorman getting ready to hit. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. That’s a hit.
And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game,
but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Pedro Pah now at the plate. And the first pitch fast ball is in for a strike.
One’s the count. The tying run at the plate. A big swing and a miss. Two strikes. got him looking and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Well, big strike out right there and maybe a little controversial with the call and I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound. No question about it. It’s not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that. And I’m sure there’s some chirping going on from the dugout making it clear that wasn’t his best call behind the plate today.
Now here is Victor Scott. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] And that one is inside ball one
with the tying run at the plate here in the top of the ninth. on the ground to the left.
Fired to second. Throw to first, but he beat it. That’s why you hug the lions on the corners late in the ball game like this. Positioned perfectly. One out left for the Cardinals. Brendan Donovan. Next up for the Cardinals that misses and it’s one and0. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count.
Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Throw to first ball game and it comes claim the win here behind some great pitching and defense. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. And your final 3-1, the Cubs go home. A winner for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
