WASHINGTON CAPITALS SHAKEUP: Lapierre Returns, McMichael at 3C & Prospects Battle for Roster Spots

So, in this edition of Lockton Capitals, there is a lot of questions going into the fall. Uh, as we know, the Capitals did not make a lot of big acquisitions. So, I think there is going to be a youth battle in camp like we have not seen in years. I’ll talk about that a bit later. We’ll talk about Mcichael at center or at wing. Uh, it is an intriguing question about where will Conor Mcichael slot in. We saw how great he played on that second line, left wing, but we know that he prefers to play center. And I think big picture, the Capitals prefer him to play center. Where will he end up? But just to get it going here, Hendricks Law Pierre signs a one-year prove it deal with the Capitals. Uh that this is his time to shine, that the Capitals have tried to retread this tire year after year after year. This is his time to prove to the Capitals that he’s worth it. That yes, you took a risk on me. you took a chance on me, but it’s worth it. Um, and off the top there, I talked about that third line center position. I think that Hendrickk Slop here will be in that mix as well. And, uh, it’s not that I have anything against Hendrick Slop here. Some people, I think, think that I don’t like these certain players. I don’t. I just don’t like these same players, you know, coming into camp, breaking camp with the team, you think that they’re the guy for the team, and they’re not. And uh to a certain extent, I think it kind of um chews up a roster spot for a more deserving player that would have been better fitting in. Uh last season, you know, going into the fall, you know, after camp, we thought that Hendrickx Lopier that was the answer at the third line center position. It wasn’t. So, this is the time for him to shine. Now, to be clear here, he can play in the big team. He can play in Hershey, but I think for me it is Capitals. it’s playing on the big team this year or bust. Uh I think that we’re past the point of him bouncing up and down between Hershey uh and Washington. So, let’s dive into that. In segment one here, signing a one-year 850,000 bridge deal. Uh it’s a one-way deal, so he’ll get paid the same whether he’s playing in DC or in Hershey. And uh you know, at the end of the day, I would like for him to to really excel this year. uh to do what Conor Mcichael did uh this past season and just really solidify his uh spot into the lineup that he doesn’t have to worry about that if he’s not going to play good enough, he’s going to get sent down to Hershey. Just go out there like you’re playing for your career. Uh because you are uh at this point when you’re signing a one-year $850,000 contract, it is time to prove to the organization that you’re deserving of be here to be here. But let’s be real here. It’s not a guarantee, it’s a bet. The Caps are giving him one more chance to prove he belongs. And that’s the right thing. And if you’re an Every Day or the Show, you know I’ve said that um that it is time to either uh for him to make the most of this opportunity or I think we should view him as an asset to get some sort of return. Now look, last season started out promising, right? Lap Pierre made the opening night roster, which I spoke of, you know, gets slotted in at that third line center. looks like he’s ready to take that next step, but yeah, it didn’t really happen. And that was the frustrating part. He played um 27 games, you know, and didn’t really flash offensively, no goals, uh just eight assists, minus three. Uh and you could tell, right? Uh just wasn’t clicking. Uh eventually they sent him down to Hershey. Um but the um I think the part that um you know a reclamation or the part that endeared him to the organization uh was the fact that he did good things in Hershey. It’s not like he didn’t play well with the Capitals. He got sent down to Hershey and he didn’t play well there either. Uh he went down there. He didn’t sulk, he didn’t moan. He went out and executed and all things considered had a good season in Hershey. And you know when they asked L Pierre about it, he even said himself, quote, “I don’t know what happened.” Uh he was confused, frustrated, said he started the summer, trained hard, you know, came into last season confident, but it didn’t translate. And uh it’s it’s not easy. I mean, I get that the National Hockey League, the premier hockey league in the entire world, is not an easy thing to do. But there’s been high hopes for Hendricks Lop here. But at the end of the day, are they just hopes? We’re hoping that it’s more. So, he goes down and like I said, to his credit, finds his game, 32 points in 32 games in Hershey. You know, that’s big. That’s consistent. That is what he needs to do for the Capitals uh to stay on the big team next year. I’m, you know, at the end of the day, I’m pulling for the guy. I think that would make a really good story that, you know, he struggled but found his way. It’s the right coach. I’ll talk about that in a bit here. But Spencer Carberry, if there is a coach to get the most out of Hendrick Slop here, uh, that is the guy. And now he’s earned that bridge deal. But make no mistake, it is a prove it contract. Nothing more. He has got to earn it. Uh, he can’t, you know, rest on where I was drafted or, you know, where I was projected to be on this team for so many years. He’s got to do it. And Chris Patrick said it clearly. uh they had an honest conversation with him and said quote look it’s up to you now unquote show us in camp force our hand make it hard on us uh but if there was a season to do it is now uh the Capitals went out they swung and missed on some names um during free agency and you know they very well might uh sign a guy but as for right now there are positions up for grabs and Hendrick slop here uh it is up to you to seize the moment but You know, like what Chris Patrick said, up to you. And I think that’s fair, right? You know, the third line center job is wide open. Uh in the next segment, I’ll talk about Conor Mcichael, but you know, I liked him at the wing as well. So, uh but there are there are other guys in the mix and uh I’ll talk about that later in the show. But for Lapierre, you know, it’s simple. You want to stay produce. It’s pretty cut and dry. You know, there’s no ambiguity there. You got you got to score goals. You got to do good things. You got to assist. you got to generate or why do we have you here? But uh better than last year because the front office has shown they’re not going to wait around. Uh we saw it with Lars Eller. If a kid isn’t ready, they’ll go get a vet. And uh you know, the thing of it is is that would have made a good story except for the vet that they reached for was Lars Eller. You know, and to be clear here, you know, I think they were hoping uh that it was a bit of the vintage Lars Eller, you know, the one from 2018. So, a big picture here, a big camp for Hendrickx ahead. Uh, we’ll see if he’s ready. But, you know, at the end of the day, I I am not uh anti- Hendricks Lop here. I definitely am not. But, like I said, the thing that I don’t like um is just kind of what we’ve seen from him so far. A lot of hope, lot of promise. All of that hope and promise dashed the last couple seasons here that I hope this is the season that he comes into camp, a man on a mission. And uh like I said, if there was a season to do it, you know, this is this team is making changes from being an older team to a younger team. And uh he’s, you know, one of the older guys in the mix now. When I in the final segment, I’ll talk about the young talent that this is his time to seize the day. Can he do it? The ball is in his court. All right. So, coming up here after the break, we’ll talk about Conor Mcichael at center at wing. I’ll discuss straight ahead. Summer sports are in full swing. All right, welcome back into this edition of Locked On Capitals, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. You can find me over on Twitter, it’s dancaps218. You can find the show on Twitter. It’s locked on caps. So, questions, questions galore. And uh one key storyline going into next season is going to be Conor Mcichael. Uh, listen, we saw him put up career best numbers, thrived on that second line with Pier Luke Dubois. Um, and I think that he deserves a lot of credit. Also a great head coach putting him in the right spot. Uh, but Conor Mcichael uh can play center, he can play wing, and last season it was primarily second line left wing, but there is a gaping hole on that third line center position. Is it going to be Hendricks Lop here? Is it going to be Conor Mcichael? or is it going to be question mark? Let’s dive into Conor Mcichael uh in the next segment here, segment two, and talk about potentially where he could fit as uh you know, at the end of the day, I think it would be a good fit at center. But let’s talk about it. Huge season like I said last year, career numbers, 26 goals, 30 31 assists, 57 points. big- time jump highs across the board. And the wild part, he did it all while playing on the left wing. So now the question is, like I said, do the Caps move him back to center? You know, Lars Eller is gone and you’ve got Stro on the top line, Dubois on line two, Nick Dow on the fourth line, but third line center. Uh the third line in general is something that Chris Patrick said he wanted to address. Uh we saw that the Capitals did sign a Bavilia to a contract. We know that Ryan Leonard is in house. So you have kind of a sketch of what could be who is going to be that third line senator. You know, you take a look at it. Mcichael, like I said, is a natural center. You know, that’s where he’s played most of his career. And I think that what would be best for Connor, what would be better for the Capitals is to play at center. But the good thing about him is he’s flexible. So he can play center or wing. Um, but you know, that’s where he’s been thriving. So, what do you do? Chris Patrick joked about it and said, you know, where is he going to go? You know, where do you see Conor Mcichael going? Is he going to be center? Is he going to be wing? He said, quote, depends on the hour, unquote. Where he thinks Mcichael fits. And, uh, yeah, that kind of says it all. Even they don’t know yet. And why don’t they know? Because I think the Capitals were all in on a couple different players. I think they were all in on Eers. I think they were probably made a run at Roselik. Those are just the ones that we know about, but uh so far swing and a miss um for making big acquisitions. You know, you take a look at the the acquisitions the Capitals made um and none of them really address uh that third line center. Now, they’re probably going to start him in the middle during training camp just to see what he has. I think he is deserving at first kick at the can and see how he looks. If it works, great. They’ve got scoring down the middle. Again, to go back to Hendrick’s law here, those two are going to battle it out. But Conor Mcichael is deserving at first kick at the can. But if not, you’re you’re risking the same issues we saw last fall. No stability on that third line. We cannot. Let me underline. Let me capitalize. Let me highlight. Let me do whatever I have to do to make it abundantly clear. The Capitals cannot go into the 2526 season with questions at the third line generally, specifically the third line center position. They’ve got to get it done. And if it’s not in-house, um, then they’re going to have to go out. So, Conor Mcichael, the front runner, again, if none of these other guys gel, you know, I’m talking about players that we know, Hendrickx, La Pier, like I said, there’s going to be a lot of young talent that’s going to be in camp as well. um that if it is not Conor Mcichael, I don’t want to go into next season risking it with an unproven guy. You know, I just really don’t I don’t want that to be a problem again. But let’s not forget, you know, why do I think he would be a good fit? Like I said, Mcichel played center under Carberry back in Hershey. That was his rookie year. He led the team in scoring. So, like a lot of other things, it’s Capitals related familiarity and the so the familiar the familiarity is there uh with Connor and Spencer. But, you know, as far as Conor Mcichael himself, he wants to be a center. He said it as much on breakdown day. Um but he said, you know, I’m willing to play wing. You know, he want just coach, put me in, give me that sweet NHL money, right? But, uh he also admitted being on the wing helped him stay in the lineup. And uh I think there’s probably nothing worse that I could think of. you know, I’m trying to put myself in their shoes is to be good enough to play in the NHL, but to be a healthy scratch the whole season. It’s got to be frustrating financially. Yay. Everything else. So, I think that Conor Mcichael, you know, and I don’t to be clear here, don’t walk away from this thinking I think he’s going to be a healthy scratch. I just that that’s what, you know, Connor himself said that, you know, if I got to play wing, if I’m in, if that’s going to keep me in the lineup, good. So, I think that um you know, he’s going to do whatever he has to do to stay in the lineup. But I don’t think uh he is in danger of not working because at the end of the day, if it doesn’t work at center, they’ll just push him back over to wing. So, we’ll see how it all plays out, right? It’s still early. It’s July, but uh you know, and I talk about that, you know, in every training camp, but I think it might be more true this year than it’s been true in a while in a while. um is that there’s a lot of questions that those different positions, you know, a veteranladen team for years and years and years um is finally making changes. We saw pretty big changes last summer. I think that um you know, they’re not going to go outside of the organization and and make as those same kind of changes, but I think that you’re going to see this team move in a younger direction that uh you know, they they tried to get that veteran player out there. I think that this is a prime opportunity for this team to see what its youth has. You know, Crystal, Leonard, Miro, um, you know, at some point Ilia Pro, Cole Hudson, you know, these kind of guys. Maybe not next year, but the year after, but I think some of those players, I think Miro could make the team. I think Crystal, um, you know, a lot of these guys could make the team. So, it’s going to be interesting. Uh, but like I said, if Mcichael grabs that third line center role and makes it work, that is a huge win for this team. Big question answered going into next season um with stability because I know they paid Lapier that money, but it’s not a lot of money in NHL terms, but like I said, doesn’t work. Uh, we we would, you know, have other questions at the trade deadlines. A lot is riding on Conor Mcichael and where he’s going to fit in the lineup. But, uh, as we take a look at it, I think that he is the front runner. I think that he very well could seize the opportunity and make that his own. And, uh, you know, you kind of take a look at it then, who is going to play the second line left wing? You’re asking me, Andrew Crystal. I really think he could do that. And then, uh, you know, you take a look at the third line. Like I said, you have Bavilier, you have Ryan Leonard. Um, but you know, it’s going to depend on what we see from Ryan Leonard, right? I think that, you know, if he is just a fraction of who we think he’s going to be, you know, he could get slotted higher up in the lineup. So, a fun season to watch. How excited are you as Capitals fans? Mcichael at center, Crystal out there on left wing, Ryan Leonard in the mix, Miro maybe even in there. Kind of the thing that we had we’ve talked about as Capitals fans for years to finally give the youth a chance very well might happen in the 2526 season. All right. So, coming up here after the break, we’ll talk about that youth. A youth battle this fall like we have not seen in years. And Sunonny Milano, Sunonny Milano, do you remember him? He’s in the mix, too. I’ll discuss straight ahead. All right, welcome back into this edition of Locked On Capitals, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. The best way that you can help grow the show is to subscribe to Locked On Capitals on YouTube and comment anything down below. All right, in the final segment here, we’re talking about the youth battle this fall. uh names that are quite familiar, familiar to me, should be familiar to you if you watch and listen to the show. You know, I talk about this. If you pay attention to the team at all, uh more specifically, you know, the Capitals development camp um going on and wrapping up here that uh those names were the ones that were spoke of. And uh Sunonny Milano, a guy that was sidelined, you know, due to some sort of injury that we’re not really sure of, um could be in the mix as well. So, let’s talk about the youth battle and uh where does Sunny Milano fit into this whole thing? Let’s talk about that in segment three. So, taking a look in the piggy bank for the Capitals, um about 5 million in cap space and a whole lot of bodies out there fighting for not too many jobs. You know, there’s some jobs out there, but I think that uh I I I think that the jobs that are open are somewhat spoken for. We talked about third line center, but who are the players in the mix? Uh to a certain extent, it is your usual suspects for part of them and some newer names to the list. Ivon Mirnenko. Um the kid is knocking it. Legit NHL shot could surpass people in camp. It’s my take on it. However, he uh kind of falls into that same category somewhat of Hendricks Lapierre. Made the team not quite good enough. get sent down to Hershey. But I think what we saw from Ivon Mirnoshenko last year down in Hershey, uh, for me, early indicator shows to me that he is in fact NHL ready. Let’s see him prove that to all of us in camp as well. But I think Ivon Mirnenko could be in the mix as well. Andrew Crystal. Uh I think he has a real chance of joining the Capitals, but the good thing about this season say he is not good enough or you know what we saw from him in camp is not good enough. He can actually play in Hershey this year which is you know as a Capitals fan not what you want to hear. We want to see him in a Capitals jersey, right? But and I think there’s a possibility that he is a fan favorite. What do we know about him? slick hands. And like I said, finally eligible to play in Hershey. Huge. Um Ethan Frank goal scorer. Can he crack the bottom six? You know, he’s another guy uh last year that was in the mix and then all of a sudden it was uh you know, Anthony Bavilier got acquired, you know, then he wasn’t in the mix so much anymore. But Ethan Frank, what do we know about him? The need for speed, you know, won the the fastest skater in the AHL contest. You know, the guy can the guy can really book it if you know what I mean. And uh I think that he is a deserving as well. But uh you know you take a look at it that is some pretty elite company. Mero Crystal Ethan Frank and then a couple names that are names that should be familiar to you but maybe not thought of to be on the Capitals roster next season and Bogdan Trinov and Henrik Rabinski. Uh bottom six bangers with speed not flashy but solid. And uh I think that there’s a distinct possibility as well. So you take a look at Miro, Crystal, Frank, Trenv, and Robinsky. I mean, some some of those players are going to be winners and some are not. And when I I didn’t want to say losers because if you’re playing if you’re playing in Hershey, doesn’t make you a loser. It’s just means you need a little bit of seasoning. You need a little marinating down in Hershey. Not Not a bad thing. You know, some of the best have gone through Hershey. But Dun, there’s more. Open up the door. Remember me, guys? Sunny Milano. Oh yeah, we even forgot you’re on the roster. he’s in the mix as well. Um, you know, Sunonny Milano, sometimes I take a look at my notes, you know, when the Capitals first acquired him and what my initial thoughts were on Sunonny Milano. Uh, my thoughts on him was back then and uh, you know, I I guess it remains to be seen what we see from him in the fall as I thought he had a good nose for the puck. When he first joined the Capitals, um, there wasn’t any even really plans for him to be on the big team. It was to be down in Hershey, but, you know, he flashed. impressed u but then inconsistent play in this uh bit of murky injury that he sustained um that it’s a name that I think has got kind of pushed out of our minds but is still in the mix. Uh so let’s talk about Sunonny Milano. Uh interesting. He missed basically like I said the entire last season with what they’re saying upper body injury. I’d like to take vague for 100, Alex. But Patrick said this weekend at Sunny’s healthy, skating early, ready to go. That’s big. Another name in the mix, a guy that is an NHLer. Now, Milano’s cap hit is 1.9 mil. So, if the kids all play him, he’s waveable. Uh, you can bury most of that salary if you do. Um, so I think he’s going to give another opportunity. And at the end of the day, you know, this is conspiratorial. I think that, you know, ambiguous upper body injury was roster management last year because they wanted to they wanted to get enough players in the mix. But now Sunonny Milano is going to get his opportunity. But if he looks like the guy from 23 24, you remember 15 goals in 49 games. Simple. He’s in the lineup, period. That would be another nice easy fix at a relatively cheap rate. So this camp, it’s going to be a war. uh you got five or six guys battling for two or three spots and that’s exactly how the front office wants it, you know, and uh I was bummed. I’m not going to try to, you know, reposition my comments or be a revisionist that they didn’t get get eers, right? But um this is making a great opportunity to say we didn’t get the guy that we wanted or the guys that we wanted. Let’s be all in on the youth movement. Let’s see what these young players that we’ve talked about for seasons. let’s see what they have in the tank, you know, and uh you know, my I’m kind of hypervigilant in real life, right? I like to prepare for things that I can prepare for. Um and I think that when you take a look at, you know, putting all your chips in on the youth, the problem with that for me, just being the way I’m wired, is what if it doesn’t work? What if you start the season with a lot of young talent and it doesn’t work? Then all of a sudden, you know, is the GM on the phone trying to get a veteran to come in here? Yeah, we’ll take your fourthline guy and and plug him in here. Yeah, we’ll take, you know, Lars Eller Jr. and have him come over here. I don’t want to be in that position either. So, I think the Capitals are kind of painting painting themsel into a corner in the regard that um this youth talent that we have high hopes for, is it going to be good enough or is it if it’s not good enough, is it going to be a squandered 25 26 season? Now, if you’re a glass half full, you’re like, why are you even thinking about failure? Um, and if you’re a glass half empty, you’re like, failure is a real thing. So, it is interesting that I I’m excited to at one to one point to think about, you know, a lot of youth, you know, Crystal, Leonard, you know, Miro, Bogn, Trinia, Verbinsky, all these guys. But what if they’re not good enough? That’s where I think it’s can get a little tricky. Now, Chris Patrick even pointed out to the Panthers last year said, “Look at Brad Marshian and Seth Jones. They weren’t on Florida in September, but they were monsters in the playoffs.” Now, uh listen, Brad, the Capitals don’t have a Brad Marshand in the Wingsorth. Seth Jones, and I don’t think that the Capitals have the uh what it takes, shall we say, to acquire a Brad Marshandesque or Seth Jones-esque type of player. um that you’re putting a lot of chips, you know, the chips that you have in in in a lot of young players. And I understand Ovetkin’s here and Wilson’s here and it’s not like it’s a new team, you know, tore down to the studs, but you know, there was questions last year. We put our chips in on Hendrick Slapier didn’t work and then we got kind of desperate and reached out for Lars Eller. So, uh an exciting move, but also kind of a risky move. So, the Capitals leaving themselves open to adjust this year. It’s smart to one extent. uh it’s risky, it’s flexible, and most of all, it puts pressure on the kids to earn it. But to circle back to it, if they don’t earn it, then who is it going to be? That’s the hard part. And hey, that’s what a healthy organization looks like, right? Putting your chips in uh and putting your faith behind the young players on the team that you have high hopes for. I don’t want to really dive into the would a could a shoulda. um you know maybe Chris Patrick has a big move you know up his sleeve you know that um will present itself and you know we’ll get that veteran you know to kind of you know put our minds at ease relatively speaking you know Eelers would have done that for me I think uh even though he’s a bit prone to injury but I think this this is a prime opportunity for the Capitals to put their faith in the young players and see if they’re worth their salt uh and if not you know some of those players we might have to view as pieces to move on from, you know, I’m talking about Henry Hendrick Lapier or perhaps um you know, some of the other players that I mentioned as well. It’s going to be an interesting season. It is going to be the season that is defined by the youth on this team in this organization. Are they good enough to compete against the best of the best in the NHL? I guess time will only tell. The Washington Capitals have re-signed Hendrix Lapierre to a one-year, $850,000 bridge deal — a clear signal that this is a “prove-it” season for the 23-year-old center. After starting 2024-25 on the NHL roster but struggling with only eight assists in 27 games, Lapierre rebounded in Hershey with 32 points in 32 games. GM Chris Patrick emphasized it’s up to Lapierre to earn a full-time spot, with training camp competition heating up.
Meanwhile, Connor McMichael is expected to start at center after a breakout season on the wing with 57 points. The departure of Lars Eller opens the 3C role, but it’s unclear if McMichael’s game will translate back to the middle. The Capitals are also counting on young talent — like Ivan Miroshnichenko, Andrew Cristall, and a now-healthy Sonny Milano — to step up and battle for roster spots in what’s shaping up to be one of the most competitive training camps in years.

I thought this team was going to start their youth movement a year ago but here we are.
yep, Lappy needs to prove he belongs, competition is good. Hoping that Connor Mac doesn't have any regression, that he stays consistent in whatever position he's in. Now we need to see what we have in guys like Cristall, Miro, let's see who breaks out, who is the difference maker. Did Milano have concussion issues like Brian Pothier did? Feel bad for the guy but the team moves on if you're out for a year and with other players trying to edge you out of a slot
Giving Lappy one last shot to prove he can be a part of this team was the right call to make. Same with bringing back Beauvillier. He was the only one of our UFAs I supported bringing back, especially after failing to land Ehlers. Even though I prefer graduating our prospects, he is valuable depth. Same with Milano if he can return to form, though I think the team moves on. Might not be as conductive to winning, but it's time to embrace the youth movement. Leonard has arrived. Lappy, Miro, Iorio, Frank, and Cristall are all chomping at the bit to make the jump. One of Trineyev or Sourdif will also take the 4RW spot.
Lapierre did not look good last year, but I think both he and Miro will benefit mightily from Hershey's early playoff exit to give them an extended offseason to rest and train. Both needed to add weight, and those short offseasons from b2b Calder Cups the past couple years hindered that.
