Sharks’ Continuing The Search For Scoring Wingers | Is Evan Rodrigues The Main Target?
The Sharks are looking for scoring wingers. Who’s out there? Your Locked On Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Hello, welcome to Locked On Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area. My name is Jay Young, caretaker at the Reef, also the co-host of Locked On NHL. I want to thank you for making Lockdown Sharks your first listen. Proudly part of the Lockdown Network. We cover your team every day. If you want to be an everyday, all you have to do just follow along wherever you get podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well. And today we’re going to be examining some potential scoring options uh out there as the Sharks continue to tinker with their roster. Uh so we’re gonna be looking at uh potential trade candidates including a couple guys like Evan Rodriguez and Nick Robertson and then looking at what’s left in the free agency pool and if anything is uh remotely potentially possibly worth digging into there. So um let’s get started by looking at kind of where this came from. Uh so Dave Magnona of the fourth period uh wrote about you know how the Sharks were in the Bow and Byum sweep stakes right and it sounds still sounds like the Blues might be a kind of in the lead for that but nowhere near wrapped up at this point. Um they did mention that the Sharks have also been trying to add a top winger to the roster but have simply come up empty even with a willingness spend. They poked around on bigger free agents including Nikolai Ellers. Of course, we know what happened there. Uh I know Max Miller had an article saying that the Sharks were willing to go big for Brock Besser, but unfortunately Besser just never made it to market. Um as he chose to resign uh with the Vancouver Conucks, maybe a little Stockholm syndrome, maybe a little my stuff’s already here. I don’t want to move my stuff. Who knows, right? Um but the expectation rate is they’re going to try to move out of defenseman. Yesterday we spent a lot of time talking about kind of the four defenseman and you know between Ferraro and Lil Jiggrren and Thrron and maybe Deese but most likely not. uh kind of their options of who move would make the most sense to potentially move on from um and potentially trade one of these guys for some forward help because uh the Sharks last time I checked uh they still stink at scoring goals and um you know even with some of the additions they made this off season I I think you can never have enough guys who can score right and the Sharks just need more guys who can score uh this upcoming season, right? Especially as they they’re trying to uh enter their fun and frisky phase as we hope. So, um but yeah, he, you know, also mentioned that like Mario Ferrar would be probably the biggest uh person, um or maybe they wait to closer to the end to the trade deadline, uh etc., etc. But I it did get me thinking about some potential forward options, right? And especially if you’re under the guise that Will Smith’s going to be a center this year. At least that’s the plan, right? Michael Misa, you know, who know? I know it’s again, they want to give him every opportunity to make the NHL. Cool. Um I’m still very much in the I wouldn’t be surprised if Misa spends a year in college or wherever, you know, to kind of round out his game a little bit. Um, you know, we’ll we’ll discuss Misa a little bit more tomorrow, but um I you know, I’m not counting on Misa to to make like a huge impact. So, um, where can the Sharks get more scoring from? Um, and you know, I I do think trying to find someone who can be a legitimate middle six score uh for you is something the Sharks should look to do. I know there’s going to be someone yelling at me. Well, you just had a forward and Fabian Zlin that you traded away. There’s nothing I can do about that right now. So, let’s move on and try to find some potential options. And one of the first options that came to my mind, uh, was a guy over with the Florida Panthers, uh, Evan Rodriguez. So, uh, Rodriguez plays for or the champion Panthers. The Panthers right now currently are $2.95 million over the cap uh with they still have to resign Mackie Samoskevich. Uh they but everybody else is is signed for right now. Evan Rodriguez makes $3 million uh so this year and next year. So would definitely help in their pursuit to get under the cap, especially with uh no easy I guess IR solutions on their roster unless Kachchuck misses the beginning of the season and then you maybe kick the can down the road. Um, but assuming that the the Panthers, right, they they went out and they kind of brought back the game gang here, they’re probably going to have to move a contract off just to make things fit for them. Uh, and I think Rodriguez probably fits that perfect value of a guy we can move to get and still get something decent. Um, but maybe isn’t going to kind of hurt our core pieces and maybe we can replicate what he does. Um, so, uh, Rodriguez, if you don’t know, is 5’11, 182 pounds. He’ll be 32 by the time the season starts. Like I said, is two years at $3 million on his contract. 82 games with the Panthers this year. Scored 15 goals, 17 assists with 161 shots on goal. playing about 1513 a night. Uh Corsy4, so when he was on the ice, the Panthers took 57.39% of the shots. Goals for 51.81%. Uh so when he was on the ice, the Panthers scored 51.81% of the goals. Uh wasn’t drafted. It was a former Boston University red, ring the bell, highlight, whatever you need to do. Um was a former Boston University guy. uh was signed out of uh college. Uh played with the Sabres, also played with the Penguins, um with the ABS, and then of course has spent the last two seasons uh with the Florida Panthers where he has won two cups. Um he’s been a pretty other up till this year uh or actually sorry no he’s been a pretty reliable scoring uh threat the past couple seasons where you’re going to get basically 15 to 20 goals from him. Um yes playing on better teams between the Penguins the the ABS and the Panthers but uh in 2122 he scored 19. uh 2223 he scored uh 16 goals. Uh 23-2 24 12 and then 24-25 had 15 like I said before. And then in the playoffs he’s been pretty productive this year. Not as much when it cames to the goals, but still had 13 assists this year and 15 points in 21 games. Uh the previous cup run they had in 24 games he’s a little bit more even at seven goals, eight assists for 15 points. So guy who still, you know, produced pretty well in the in the playoffs here. Um, with Rodriguez looking at kind of his evolving hockey card here, uh, 32nd percentile player playing at kind of first line minutes at five on five. Got a little bit of power play, but not too much. And you would kind of expect that with some of the other guys that um, on the team there that they would, you know, with Bararkov and Kachchuck, etc., etc., you know, isn’t going to get kind of first run on the power play. uh doesn’t play shorthanded, which is that’s fine. Um you’re not bringing him in to kill penalties, you’re bringing him in to help score goals. Um looking at his war, he’s a 54 percentile. War the 22 23 season, he, you know, was was definitely a high point of like over 75%. He’s been pretty even right around 50% the last couple seasons. Um you know, solid when it comes to driving offense, uh and defense, um there as well. He’s played against tough competition, but of course has had good teammates as well. Saw the finishing kind of pop up a little bit this last year uh with, you know, so kind of a little bit better of the scoring um there with maybe not as many opportunities, but still like nothing, uh alarming like it’s not like a, you know, Godette was scoring as like 20% uh shooting percentage type of thing. So, um where how he was utilized with the Panthers was uh of course the Panthers going to get a lot of offensive zone starts. He got a good offensive zone starts against, you know, kind of average competition there. So, utilizes an average top six two-way forward. I think for the Sharks, why it makes a lot of sense, right, is uh one, two years at $3 million, very easy to afford. Again, not the the Sharks can have to worry about it, but um I think he’s a player who could be a very nice complimentary player to what the Sharks have, especially if you have, you know, Will Smith or Winberg or whomever you want as your uh kind of second line center. I think he could kind of really fill into that role there. And the hope is with maybe uh a little bit more ice time and a bigger role because again, right, against uh with with the Penguins, he’s kind of more of a secondary option. Uh with the Sharks, your your hope is that uh with a little bit more ice time, a little bit more bigger role, he can kind of help produce and maybe get close to that 20 goal mark um type of scenario. And even if you go back to his time in Colorado where, you know, he played almost 18 minutes a night. He had 16 goals in that season, but he only played 69 games. He has been relatively healthy though the previous seasons. Uh, you know, like he hasn’t really missed a a ton ton of time. So, um, you know, I I think he would be a very lowrisk type of of transaction because I think you could just kind of plug him in and expect, you know, 15 to 20 goals uh for San Jose. And if he takes off and, you know, gets to kind of eat up more power play time, etc., etc., you could be looking at a 20 to 25 goal scorer for you, which the Sharks desperately need more guys who can hit you, uh, 20 type of goals. So, uh, he’s the first guy. And I think again for the the Panthers who have to shed a contract, maybe this makes sense and they might be able to replicate his scoring production elsewhere. So, uh, we’re going to look at some other guys here, including, uh, Nick Robertson. And if the Sharks maybe want to take a swing on, if you can’t get Jason Robertson, uh, maybe you can get the next best thing in Nick Robertson. So, uh, we’ll get to that here in just one second. All right, guys. I do want to of course thank you for making the Lockdown Sharks your first listen. If you haven’t yet, perfect time to subscribe. Even though the uh draft is done, free agency is, you know, we’re we’re moving past all that stuff now. We’re going to be getting ready for the new season here. We’re going to start diving into some of the new players some more, diving into the new prospects. Uh as again, we cover prospects like nobody’s business here at Lockdown Sharks. to make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcasts and of course you can watch on YouTube as well. If you Mom, can we get a Robertson? Uh, you already have a Robertson at home. Uh, his name apparently might be Nick Robertson. So, um, Nick Robertson is another guy I do want to discuss because we know the Maple Leafs are are trying to at least kind of listening to 32 thoughts and, um, you know, the Maple Leafs are trying to move out some of these bottom six forwards to try to make a bigger splash here soon. So, uh, for the Sharks, you know, again, right, beggars can’t be choosers. Let’s see if maybe we can grab a guy who’s uh maybe could get a better opportunity elsewhere. And I wanted to highlight Nick Robertson. So, uh Nick Robertson, if you don’t know, uh plays with the Toronto Maple Leafs again, uh the brother to Jason Robertson. Uh it’s crazy that Jason Robertson is like 6’2 and Nick Robertson is not 6’2. Uh he is 5 foot n. So, uh, that is one thing to kind of keep in mind as, uh, we know Mike Greer likes his boys big, uh, especially when it comes to his forwards. Well, he just likes all of his players big. Uh, so that might be a little bit of a a a red flag in it. But, um, so Nick Robertson, uh, former uh, sorry, former second round pick of Toronto, uh, back in the 2019 draft. He’ll be 24 when the season starts. has been playing with the Maple Leafs. Um he 69 games this year. Very nice. 15 goals, seven assists, 112 shots on goal. Only playing 12 minutes a night. Uh Corsy Ford 49.33% goals for 50.91%. Robertson has kind of had a little bit of a struggle kind of uh solidifying himself as an NHL player until the last two seasons. Uh this year, like I said, he played 69 games, had 15 goals, seven assists, 22 uh points. The year before that, 56 goals, 14 uh sorry, 56 games, excuse me, 14 goals, 13 assists, 27 points. All while playing less than 12 minutes a night. So that’s the hope, and we’ll get to that here uh a little bit more in a second. So, uh, looking at his evolving hockey card, uh, again, kind of playing that third, fourth line minutes, 46 percentile player, 35th percentile offensively, 67 percentile defensively. Uh, it does a really good job kind of driving goals and and does a good job of kind of keeping goals down. Doesn’t get, of course, a ton of power play opportunities, especially uh, with the core 4 or RIP uh, with the Maple Leafs. But, um, looking at his wars, 72 percentile war, um, you know, offensively, like he’s done a good job of of making the best of his opportunities when it comes to his kind of finishing and with his goals, um, but, uh, you know, maybe uh, I don’t want to say I don’t want to say he’s like, uh, kind of over or not sustainable or anything like that. I think um if he were to get more ice time, you might see that some of the like even strength numbers increase, but you’re probably not going to see the efficiency when it comes to uh goals, etc., etc. So, uh doesn’t play good to like he plays really bad competition and has good teammates, which is something we’re going to talk about here right now. Uh is he was very sheltered. Uh got a lot of offensive zone starts against really bad competition. Um, and that is is that more of a because the uh Maple Leafs knew what they had slash maybe what they don’t have in Nick Robertson. Uh, or did it just kind of work out that way? Maybe a little bit of both. Who knows? Um, Robertson, like if you trade for him, you’re hoping that he can continue to grow his game and expanded role. uh because the Sharks would need him to play more of a middle six role and be more of a scoring option than what he has been with the Leafs, right? And we know with the Leafs, right, they they just have so many guys at the top and they’ve never been able to kind of get the bottom six, right? uh well among some of their other issues and right now as they’re trying to be aggressive to go acquire some other players and maybe a guy we’re going to talk about here in a couple minutes um for Robertson like it would be a very cheap acquisition for the Sharks and then you would have to give him a contract um but even the contract isn’t projected to be that bad uh from Evolving Hockey 49% that he signs a two-year deal at 2.173 million and he would still be an RFA after that. So, a very lowcost contract um that’s not going to like not be prohibitive and um we a guy who maybe wants some of your other younger players like your musties, churner shot, etc., etc. can slide down and be effective in a bottom six type of role. Um so, and who knows what the cost is going to be. I don’t think it would be extremely like I don’t think it would be a lot. And we know again the Leafs I think are trying to move out some of these contracts to go be more aggressive. One player I wanted to mention and it might be a little spicy and probably not realistic but Isaac Howard. Isaac Howard prospect of the uh Tampa Bay Lightning 51 190 pounds playing with Michigan State. uh won the Hobie Baker this last season as the uh best player in college hockey. Uh 37 games, 26 goals, 26 assists, 169 shots on goal. Uh we know that Isaac Howard and the M or and the Lightning just aren’t like this is not going to work out, right? And we know the Lightning are trying to trade him um to get something back. Uh he’s a former first round pick in the 2022 draft, a 31st pick overall. Um and has already like has been had a an excellent uh collegiate career. Hasn’t signed his right. Um is expected to go back to Michigan State, but if the Sharks or if a team were to trade for him, no. And maybe he just wants to go back to Michigan State, right? Michigan State’s supposed to be very good. Um, probably going to, you know, going to be in the running for a national championship. Like maybe he wants to do that. But, you know, we see guys get s like Logan remember, he’s signed like right before the season started, like kind of dead of summer type of thing. Like, if a team were to acquire him, I wouldn’t be surprised if an ELC came right afterwards. Um Howard, who has been extremely productive in the uh NCAA playing again these past two seasons with Michigan State. Um NHL Foley on Twitter does amazing work. If you don’t follow him, does amazing work with with his graphics, etc., etc., uh especially with these prospects here. Um what Howard does very well is he scores and he creates scoring chances and uh he like he’s an offensive type of player. um you’re going to get, you know, like the defense and stuff like you’re going to have to deal with some of those potential issues as you would with any young player. Um but Isaac Howard could be a potential guy who walks into the NHL and puts up 15 to 20 goals in his first season. Um, the problem is one, it’s a you there’s a lot of ifs with with the potential Isaac Howard, especially if you want him to contribute right away, right? Because you’re still going to have a guy who’s transitioning from the NHL to the collegiic level. And I mean, we saw Will Smith last year, and yes, Will Smith’s a younger player, but we we saw Will Smith, it took half a year, half a season before Will Smith looked like an NHL player. And then Will Smith took off the second half of the season, right? I don’t think it would take Isaac Howard half a season to kind of get going. Or at least that’s the hope, right? As he’s 21 right now, and you you would hope that he could maybe hit the ground a little bit more, hit the ground running a little bit easier than than Will Smith. But it’s still like you’re you’re projecting a lot. And from the sound of it, it’s going to cost you a lot. I I believe the Lightning are looking for a first round pick. You could always offer the Oilers first round pick next year, but if I’m offering the Oilers first round pick from next year, I think I want a little bit more tangible we know what we’re getting type of player here. And Howard, um, yes, he might help this year, but you do have a lot of guys that you’re kind of expecting to start to make an impact here sooner rather than later. So, it’s spicy. I just don’t know if there’s a fit right now with Isaac Howard and what the Sharks are looking for. So, uh, and again, like if if I’m having to spend that Oilers first round pick, I want someone who I know can make an NHL impact right now because they’ve already made an an NHL impact. So, uh, we’re going to look at some free agent options and, uh, look at two guys who I discussed as potential free agents beforehand, but are still out there. So, we’ll get to it in just one second. All right, before we finish up, do of course want to thank you for making Lockdown Sharks your first listen. For your second listen, check out the Locked Onel podcast. Uh there’s no offseason. We’re still bringing the biggest daily stories around the league that matter the most with local coverage you love from Locked On. Find Locked Onel on YouTube, wherever you listen to podcast. All right. So, one player who has actually been linked to the Maple Leafs, uh, would be Jack Rosalik. Uh, we’ve discussed Rosik on this show, and he was a player I was very interested in in signing if I was a San Jose Sharks. Um, I think there was I know Shank Pang had mentioned at least on on July 1st that there was no connection, but now that kind of seats are getting full, maybe it might be time to circle back or make a first connection with Rosik. Rozik, uh 6’1, 198 pounds, 28 uh coming off a one-year deal at $2.8 million. Uh playing with the Carolina Hurricanes, 81 games, 22 goals, 17 assists with 139 shots on goal. Playing under 14 minutes a night. Uh Corsy, again, keep in mind with the Canes, their Corsy numbers are always obnoxious because that’s their whole thing. Uh 57.55% goals for 45.54%. uh Roselvic um playing second line minutes, you know, kind of between second or at least at five on five, 30th percentile player overall, 61st percentile offense. Like that is his game for you is he’s going to drive offense for you. Uh because and that is again what the Sharks need. Um kind of playing second unit power play, not going to play short-handed, which again we don’t care right now. We have plenty of guys who can play we think that can play on on the PK. Um Rozelvic has been a guy who’s seen his stock go up the past couple seasons where um you know last year his war he’s been 31% war over the past three years but la this past season is up over 50%. Um the finishing and the goals have have definitely increased over that time. Um he’s played like he’s going to help with assists. He’s going to help draw penalties. He’s played solid competition with solid teammates as well. um and utilize as an average top six two-way forward. So, he kind of got um little bit lower quality of competition, but did get a lot of offensive zone starts as you would expect again with the Carolina Hurricanes who their whole game is to kind of control the puck. Um Roselovic guy who has bounced around a little bit started with uh with the Jets, played with the Blue Jackets, Rangers, Hurricanes. Remember, Matt, if you have a Rosik 98 jersey for like those like three weeks, that would be just what a beautiful thing. But, um, you know, two-time 20 goal scorer, scored 20 goals in the, uh, 21-22 season with the Blue Jackets and then put up 22 goals again this year. Um, you know, last year he had nine goals, but kind of split his time between the Blue Jackets and the Rangers um, during that time and, you know, has has saw his ice time go down a little bit. um as well but this year you know was very efficient. So the big question right is can he continue with again that with given a a bigger role can he continue to produce anywhere near the same uh race but it does sound like the Leafs are very very interested in trying to clear some space to sign Roselvic. Um, so might be more of a pipe dream at this moment here. Just in case what you’re wondering what he would cost, um, Evolving Hockey has him projected to sign a three-year deal at a little over $4 million at 26% or a four-year deal at like $4.5 million. Pretty equal odds for uh for both those types of contracts. So, um, moving on to a guy who, um, if you’re looking for a lowc cost swing for the fences, I really like this one a lot. So, um, Victor Olson, 5’11, 180 pounds, 30 years old, coming off a one-year deal at a little over a million bucks for the Vegas Golden Knights. Played 56 games, dealt with some injuries this year, though, but 15 goals, 14 assists, uh, 109 shots, playing 14 and a half minutes a night. Corsy4 54% goals for 68.63%. Uh that is uh pretty ridiculous there. Um Olivesson playing second line minutes 79th percentile player 67th percentile offensively 93 percentile defensively. Um again like he’s sec been a second unit power play type of guy because of uh who the just the names in front of him, right? uh and now especially with Marner etc etc but like with Stone with Eel Hurdle like there’s just a bunch of other guys who are going to earn more opportunities than him. So um but there must be something here. This might be one of those very under the radar signing. So Olivesson uh 77 percentile war has been basically either 75 percentile or 25 percentile the past three years. that 23 24 season uh really kind of crashed down. But um the finishing like you’re you’re you’re signing Olivesson to come score goals like that is what he does. Um you’re like he that that’s his job is to score goals for you. And I think Olivesson could be a really nice type of player for that. Um faced a little bit lower quality competition but got a lot of offensive zone starts as you would expect with the uh Vegas Golden Knights. And the great thing about him is he’s not going to cost very much to sign. Uh he’s projected to sign a two-year deal at like $2.3 million. That’s like a 30% likelihood. And now that he’s been out here for a little bit longer, you could probably just sign him to like a one-year deal at like $2 million or something like that. Um and just have him come in and score a bunch of goals for you. And then you maybe trade him at the trade deadline. though. Um, you know, kind of looking at who’s out there and like the guy, you know, again, I think the Isaac Howard one, as spicy and as fun as that would be, I just don’t know if it makes a lot of sense for San Jose at this point as I think, again, you’re looking for someone who can kind of come in and help this team right now. And there’s a lot of ifs there. Um, I do like Victor Olivesson a lot, especially if you want a low like kind of an under the radar guy, a guy who could probably outperform his contract because Olivesson is a guy who has scored a a you know, a very at a very good clip throughout his career. Um, you know, and as a guy who who, you know, is a former seventh round pick, um, you know, played with the Sabres, played with, you know, and then played with the Golden Knights here. Uh but he’s a guy who’s, you know, got three goal like 20 goal seasons. Um you know, 15 game goals in in 56 games this year. And you you would expect if he had played the full season or anywhere close to it, he’s probably getting you probably hitting that 20 goal mark as well. So I think he would be a guy again and he’s not going to cost much uh that you’re going to have to give up or like you just have to give him a contract. like he’s not going to cost much to sign and I think he could really slide in on your second line quite easily and then play a good chunk on the power play as well and help that there. Um the Evan Rodriguez one I think I’d be really excited about as well too just because uh again having a guy who’s been a Stanley Cup champion, he’s also been on some bad teams with those Savers team, right? and kind of maybe has could be a guy to some of the younger guys to look to and be like, you know, I’ve been through this before, guys. And like this is, you know, like how um kind of just the process of going through like being a bad team. Um but I I think for him like you’re you’re getting 15 to 20 goals easily in two years at $3 million. That’s also a contract I think that you can easily flip as well to even as soon as this trade deadline because of how little he gets paid, you know, especially compared to what I think he could potentially bring for you. So, those are the two guys I think I’d be the most excited about if the Sharks were to uh either sign and or acquire. Um because I think they could do the most for you. So, uh Roswick is as exciting as that would be, I just don’t think it’s in the cards. And like I said, I think he ends up with the Leafs here. Um, and Robertson, like you could maybe talk me into it, but I do think he’s uh there’s a reason why he’s seen a lot of sheltered minutes uh in his career and he’s just yes, he has scored been very efficient with his scoring. Uh I just I don’t know if you gave him a bigger role if he would continue to thrive uh in that type of role. So, um, that’s going to be me. That’s going to be it for me today. Uh, we’ll be back tomorrow. We’re going to be, uh, talk about Michael Misa, uh, who I think might be pretty good. Uh, so make sure you’re following along wherever you get podcast. And of course, you can watch on YouTube as well. Follow the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram at Lockdown Sharks. Follow me on Twitter and Blue Sky Fryhole. Till tomorrow. Bye, friends. Ride what we got. Get McKenna and go for the big fish next FA
fun and frisky becomes funner and friskier if they get either McKenna or Keaton Verhoff in the 2026 draft.
Sharks have a good number of players who ought to get an NHL shot. Giles, Ostapchuk, Lund, Cardwell. Also, Regenda and Afanasyev. That's without the young rookies getting games like Chernyshov, Halltunen, Bystedt or Musty. Would like to see some of these sorts on a 3rd line with Wennberg. Isaac Howard is tempting, though he's also smaller. Not seeing the need for immediate impact.
As tempting as it might be to get these players, just not feeling the need for a move here. That said, Olofsson makes the most sense, especially as you point out, he's possibly tradable at the deadline.
