Angels played a three-game series in Arlington. That was back on the 15th, 16th, and 17th of April. and we’ll see how the Angels fare against the Rangers here tonight at series in April against the Texas Rangers. Texas swept the Angels in that three-game series. The two teams are virtually in the same spot in the AL West coming into play tonight. The Rangers are 11 games out of first place in the AL West. The Angels are 11 and a half games out. Angels can leaprog in front of Texas in the third with a victory here this evening. We’ll see if the Angels can bounce back after a tough road trip, a road trip where the Angels were basically in every game. Could have won all six of them as the Angels ended up going two and four on that recent road trip. And the Angels after taking two out of three against the Braves ended up uh losing all three to the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend. So, we’ll see what happens here tonight. We have an allstar pitching matchup here this evening. going for the Angels will be Usay Kikuchi. He was named to the AL All-Star squad yesterday and so was Jacob Deg Grom who will be facing the Angels. Kikuchi and Deg Grom will be teammates for that all-star game next week in Atlanta. And Deg Grom is having a fantastic season. He did not win a single game last year. He only pitched 10 and two/3 innings. This year he’s 9 and2. He’s already pitched over 101 innings. He’s on the comeback trail and might be the comeback player of the year in the American League. When we get back, Mark Langston is eagerly standing by. He will have the starting lineups. It’s time for tonight’s starting lineups of game one of this four game series against the Texas Rangers. The starting lineup is brought to you by prize picks. Rangers starting lineup is announced by their manager Bruce Bochi. Will look like this tonight. Leading off designated hitter Sam Hagerty. Batting second, shortstop Cory Seager. Hitting third, their second baseman, Marcus Simeon. In the cleanup spot in right field, Adoleis Garcia batting fifth in left field, Wyatt Langford hitting sixth behind the plate, Jonah Heim. Batting seventh, first baseman, Jake Burgerer, hitting eighth, third baseman, Ezekiel Duran. And batting ninth in center field, Michael Helman. On the mound for the Rangers with a record of nine and two and a 2.13 erra, right-hander, Jacob Deg Grom. Angel starting lineup tonight will look like this. Leading off shortstop, Zack Neto batting second over at first base, Nolan Showell. Hitting third, designated hitter, Mike Trout in the cleanup spot in left field, Taylor Ward. Batting fifth in center field, Joe Adell hitting six out in right field, Jorge Cair. Batting seventh, second baseman, Luis Ranifo hitting eighth. Behind the plate tonight, Travis Darno. And batting ninth over third base, Chad Stevens on the mound for the Halos, the Allstar. Three and six record 2.81 erra is left-hander Kuchi as we get closer to the first pitch and all the action here tonight at the big A. Here’s my partner Terry Smith. Well, thank you so very much Mark Langston as the Angels are back home and happy to be back and this is the start of a throwback week here at the Big A. We’ll have a number of former Angel players coming back to Angel Stadium this week. Angels are wearing the throwback home uniforms here tonight. The white tops and bottoms and the stripe down the side of the pants, red numerals and lettering. Angels have the uh dark caps on with the red bill and they get ready to square up against the Texas Rangers. Rangers have on their traveling gray tops and bottoms with the blue numerals and lettering. Let’s run down the umpires for tonight’s game calling balls and strikes will be Brock Belaloo. Pretty young umpire and in the times we’ve seen him in the past, he’s been a very good ball and strike umpire. He’s behind the plate. Shane Lievens Barger will be the umpire at first base. Nate Tomlinson at second and the umpire at third base. Tonight it is Nick Marley and he’s also the crew chief. So we are getting close to the action beginning here at Angel Stadium. Little bit of a delay right now because we haven’t quite hit I guess 638. So the home plate umpire Brock Blue waiting for the clock to move to 638. We see it out there in right field down by the foul pole. So that means we’re ready to go. You say Kikuchi on the mound. And he has the sign. Here’s his first pitch. And that one is a little bit high. We’re underway. The counts, one ball, no strikes. Kikuchi an allstar. Second time in his career. First time was back in 2021. So he’s had to wait four years for a second all-star birth. And the pitch. That’s a chase and a miss. And the count on Sam Hagerty, their leadoff batter. It’s even at one ball, one strike. 76Β° at game time. The first pitch was precisely on time tonight at 6:38. Time and temperature. It’s presented by Mountain Mike’s Pizza. And the next pitch, a chase and a miss. Want to remind you, pizza the way it should be at Mountain Mike’s Pizza. Three straight sliders to start the atbat off to Sam Hagerty. Here’s the next delivery. And that one pops out of the mid of the catcher, Travis Darn. No, Hagerty is hitting 248. He’s a switch hitter. He spent some time in Triple A this season. Have a number of hitters in their lineup who have spent some time in AAA this year. Counts two balls, two strikes. Here’s the next one on Hagerty. And that one just missed a little bit outside. That was a slider. Full count. Three and two. Akuchi coming into the game a 3 and6 record. Erra RA is really good 2.81 10th best in the American League. He is third in the AL in walks. Although that part of his game he’s had that under control lately. In fact, he hasn’t walked a batter his last two starts. Has a full count here though. And the pitch and that’s fouled off right by the plate. Caught a piece of Hagerty who’s on his knees right now. Now he props himself up and limping around a little bit as he limps out of the batter circle. So he’s going to be given a little extra time to get back in there. Yeah, they’re going to go check on him now. Yeah, what a way to start your night right there. And that’s another slider. Six pitch at bat. Five of the six have been sliders. One curve ball out of the zone. a three ball count to start the game for USA Kikuchi and he’s at 23% three ball counts this season and that is the sixth highest in the majors right out of the gate he’s got one so they’re still checking out Hagerty you got to think he’s going to stay in the ball game but he is nowhere close to the batter circle yet in the meantime Kikuchi’s getting a few extra warm up tosses to stay loose out there. And Bruce Bochi, a good friend of yours, the Texas manager was out there to see him. He’s walking back to his first base dugout along with the athletic trainer. Yeah, he’s got that bad knee also headed back to the dugout. So, Hagerty is back in there. It’s a full count. And here’s the payoff pitch. He lifts this one foul down the right side. That’s going to get back in out of play. Another slider. You say Kafui is throwing his slider more than his four seam fast. 37% sliders. 36% four seam fast balls. And you’re going to need your breaking ball against the Texas Rangers. They are a good fastball hitting team. Again, the 3-2. This is bounced off the glove of Kikuchi and it knocks the glove off his hand and then he stumbles trying to retrieve the ball behind the mound. never got a piece of it. That’s going to be a hit all the way. Duchi was doing everything humanly possible to make a play on that one, but was unable to come up with the baseball in time. Yeah, this one knocked his glove off his hand. And then as he went to go get it, he stumbled on the backside of the mound and ended up doing a somersault. I think we saw a game earlier this season where on a comebacker it knocked the glove off his hand as well. Angels are going to check him out. So the batter was checked out during the at bat and now the pitcher is going to get checked out after the at bat. Yeah, he should be okay. Just on that slope when he was going after the baseball got the backside of the slope and lost his balance. Did a little somersault. So it is an infield single for Hagerty. He was just two for his last 20 coming into the ball game. First hit of the game is presented by 714 tickets. Buy, sell, and enjoy the best seats. Download the app or visit 714 tickets.com. Another warm-up to us and Kikuchi apparently is okay to continue. One thing with Sam Hagerty on there over at first base, he will run. He’s got eight stolen bases this year. So, here’s the next batter and this is Cory Seager. He’s hitting 245. Chases and misses the first pitch. Seager, much like Zach Neto, he’s going to hack on that first pitch no matter what it is. And that was a fast ball on that outside part of the plate. left-handed batter. And here’s the next delivery. Swings at that one and lifts it in the air. Foul on the left side. It’s going to get back and out of play. Boy Seager just a 188 average in the month of June. It’s picked it up a little bit the last 12 games. A 293 average, four home runs, nine RBI’s. only left-handed hitter in their lineup against Kikuchi. And the next pitch that’s low and outside. One ball, two strikes this top of the first inning. It’s being presented by your SoCal Hyundai dealers. There’s joy in every journey. Marcus Simeon waiting on deck. Big lead over at first base. And there’s a lob toss over there. Shadowwell is actually playing off the bag a few feet off it. That is always a great strategy when when you can play off the base cuz all it takes is a little shoulder shrug like you’re going back to the base. Will freeze that runner. One and two on Seager. Here’s the next pitch. Takes that one low and away. Seager’s had hits in 10 of his last 11 games. Seager has spent some time on the injury list this season in both the months of April and May. He’s had hamstring issues this season. Right hamstring has been a problem and he takes that pitch and now it’s another full count for Kikuchi. Kikuchi has really pitched well this season here at the Big A. His erra here is 1.12. The next pitch, this ball’s hipped high in the air and it is well hit into center field and it is gone. Dead center field. No doubt about it. That one cleared the high bushes out there behind the wall. And that’s going to be a pretty big home run right there as far as the tail of the tape. 430 on that two-run blast and it’s 2 nothing Texas. Yeah, two sliders out of the strike zone trying to get him to chase one and he doesn’t. This one he leaves it up in the zone and it catches the middle of the plate. Seager on it and that is the first home run that you say Kikuchi has allowed to a lefty this year. And you’re right, he’s the lone lefty in the lineup. And here’s one that’s bounced foul right into the Angels dugout on the third base side. Now, there’s not too much of a split as far as Kikuchi how he’s fared against left-handed and right-handed batters. Almost identical. The only difference is the home runs. He’s allowed 11 home runs. 12 now and 11 of them to the righties. First one to a lefty right there. There’s a pitch taken for a ball. It’s one ball, one strike on Marcus Simeon. Elike Seager coming into the game with hits in 10 of his last 11 games. He’s hitting .235. And here’s the next pitch. That one misses and the count’s two and one. So, Kikuchi has yet to retire a batter here in the top of the first and he’s already thrown 17 pitches. Here’s the next delivery and that’s a Chase and a miss. We were talking about Usay Kikuchi’s home RA and that’s going to jump a little bit there with that two-run home run there. That 1.12 RA, second best in the majors. Only Hunter Brown had a better home ERA at 1.01. Here’s one grounded to short. Backhanded by Neto. Throws a little bit low, but handed handled over there by Shadowwell. And that’ll be the first out. 63 on the ground out. Dol Garcia will be the next batter. Garcia, their cleanup man, he’s hitting .228, which is exactly what their team batting averages. In fact, both teams have the identical team batting averages, tying the Angels and Rangers for 12th in the AL and team batting. First pitch, a chase and a miss by Garcia. And the Rangers have struggled against lefties this year. Just six and 14 against lefties. And just an awkward first inning that comebacker to Kikuchi that he isn’t able to handle. That’s the first hit. And then the good at bat by Seager trying to get him to chase a slider away. Didn’t bite and then made the mistake over the middle of the plate. Count. It’s now 101 on Garcia. Here’s Kikuchi’s next pitch. And let’s chop foul back behind the plate. And and again, this is one of those games tonight you you can’t make many mistakes with Jacob Deg Grom on the other side. And Deg Grom right now is on an unbelievable roll. He has had 14 consecutive starts allowing two runs or less. Franchise record. And here’s the pitch. And that one that’s outside. It’s a two- two count. Only two pitchers in the last 25 years in the majors that have a better role than Deg Grom as that one is lifting in the air. and it’s going to land back to the seats on the right side out of play. Only pitchers have passed 25 years to allow two runs or less in 15 consecutive starts. And those starts had to be at least five innings or more in a single season. Felix Hernandez had 17 of those starts in a row in 2014. And Matt Leos had 15 in a row and that was back in the 2010 season. Next pitch missed and that is another full count. So three and two now on Garcia. Already a 25 pitch inning. One out, two in the pitch. This is bounce foul over on the third base side. Around the infield, the Angels tonight look like this. Nolan Shadawell is over at first base. Second baseman is Luis Renheifo. Chad Stevens is over there at third base for the Angels. And Stevens has started somewhere in the infield in every game since he’s gotten called up. Here’s the pitch lifted in the air to right field. Coming in on that one and making the grab on it is the Angels right fielder Jorge Solair. So that’ll be out number two. Other outfielders for the Angels, Taylor Wards in left and Joe Adell’s in center. The catcher for the Angels tonight, the veteran Travis Darno, Mike Trout dehing, and Usay Kikuchi, 34y old lefty on the mound. Pitch 28 is on its way. Wyatt Langford is the batter. He takes outside. It’s one and0. Yeah, 17 of the 28 right here in the first inning have been the slider. Langford is just two for his last 19 entering the game. Takes that pitch inside. 230 batting average for him. Langford was sidelined back in the opening full month of the season in April with a right oblique strain. So, he’s missed time this year. The pitch that’s fouled off on the right side. Went on a little rehab assignment. back in April as well. Now he lets it loose and he goes after that baseball. He swings about as hard as anybody in the game. Here’s the 2-1 and he lights that one right at Stevens and he makes the catch. He didn’t have to move. That ball was right on top of him in a hurry. Hitting ends on the line out. Some first inning damage. Rangers put a two on the introducing baseball’s all new national pregame show. MLV tonight live at 5. Visit angels.com/promotions for more info. We get ready to go to the bottom of inning number one. Angels facing Jacob Deg Grom. Told you a lot about him already before he’s thrown a pitch here. He has really been a redhot pitcher. Positions himself the first base corner of the pitching rubber. And now I don’t know if they’re having a pitchcom problem. Well, I think they are. So, we’re going to have a little delay here before Neto sees the first pitch and they’re going to run out of new device. Yeah, Jacob Deg Grom, you were just talking about some of the numbers. And this is the old Jacob Deg Gromer is going to see tonight. Two-time SA Young Award winner. And this is the guy the Rangers signed to that five-year $185 million deal back in 2023. They finally get to see it and they have a really good one-two punch and the Angels are going to see them uh in the first two games of this series. Nathan Evaldi will face the Angels tomorrow and he’s been pitching really well. Yeah, it’s critical that you got to try to pitch with these guys. And Coocci already spotting Deg Gro a two spot in the first. There’s his first pitch tonight. That’s right in there for a called strike. That was a first pitch fast ball of 97. And here’s the ground’s next pitch. And that one is low. Grump’s fast ball this year 97.3. That’s its average fast ball. Third highest in the majors. Only Paul Skins and Terrick Scooel have a better fast ball. There’s a chase and a miss by Neto. One ball, two strikes. Coming into this season, Deg Grom had only 35 starts total over the last four years. This is his 18th start this year. Pitches even just for a ball. Two and two the count on Neto and here comes Deg Gro’s pitch. Neto with a liner into left that’s going to drop in and it’s going to roll out near the rim of the track out there. Neto will easily go into second and he is there sliding with a leadoff double. That was a two strike pitch. Yeah, this pitch too. 100 mph inner third. Might not even been a strike and Neto just pulls his hands and rotates quickly. Able to get to that ball down in the corner and the Rangers outfield is about as good as it gets. Went Langford got to that ball. That’s an easy double but that he threw it all the way into the air to Simeon and that forced that what was not a standup double. He had to hustle to get there. Yeah. So, here is Shaell and the first pitch. He goes after it, fouls it off on the left side, back and out of play. Basketball there at 99. The Gro in his days with the Mets, he won backto back Sai Young awards. That was in 2018 2019. He was a shortstop in college. Here’s the pitch. And that’s a chase and a miss. 0 and2 is the count. Yeah. Ninth round pick by the Mets in 2010. Former rookie of the year as well. Right-hander is in front. 0 and2 on Showell. Neto leads off second. Here’s the two strike pitch. chopped on the right side. It’s a fair ball. It’s going to be a productive out ball fielded by Burger, the first baseman who’ll easily get the first before Showell. But on that play, Neto moves to third base. So, the Angels will take that. And now we’ll see what Mike Trout can do as he gets ready for his first at bat tonight. Y Angels have been so good at answering back and they need to answer back with something right here. And again, this is one of those games you’re going to get strikes. Deg Grom is a striker or 1.8 walks per nine. He will be in that strike zone. First one on Trout. That’s lined into left center field. Making the catch is Langford. Tagging is Neto. Throws way off line and he will score on the sacrifice fly. So the Angels do get a quick answer back run. And now the lead is cut in half. It’s two to one Texas. And this ball is squared up by Mike Trout. And Langford, I think just because of how he had to go catch that, was not able to set his feet, make that strong throw to home plate. I don’t think he was going to get Neto anyway. But that was not a deep fly ball. That throw was off target. Angel’s first run scored is presented by Dale Taco. Here’s Taylor Ward batting now. Two outs, no one on. And he takes the first pitch for strike. 0 and one is the count and here’s the next delivery and Ward tucks one up over on the first base side in foul ground. Right in the coaching box making the catch on that one is Burger and that is how the inning will end. So the Angels do get a run at the lead in half. It’s 2-1. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager sent the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. First ball swinging a leadoff single. So Heim is on. He came into the ball game hitting just 220 and in his last 41 games hitting 173. But he hit that one first pitch he saw for a base hit. has first pitch fast ball and that catches a lot of the plate. Batter is Jake Burgerer. Right-handed hitter and the pitch and he swings at the first pitch and lifts a fly ball out to right field. Circling under making the grab on that one is Jorge Cer. Let’s pause for station identification on Angel Radio. Also available on the Angels radio app. Ezekiel Durham, the eight-hole hitter, will be the next batter. Last half inning in the bottom of the first when the Angels were batting. It was presented by Foundation Building Materials, the official jersey partner of Angels Baseball. And here’s the next pitch. It’s on the outside corner. It’s a called strike. Brand has spent some time in the minors this season. He’s hitting 345 in TripleA. He’s hitting just 180 or make it 152 with the Rangers this year. Here’s the next pitch and it’s a little pop right to the second baseman. Reano makes the catch. High has to hustle back to first. That’s a second out and Michael Helman who’s had only two at bats for the Rangers so far this season. He will be the next batter. A good pitch. Now we’re starting to see Kikuchi introduce that curve ball. Only saw one of them in that first inning. And that the last four starts he’s really used his curveball quite a bit. Elman is a right-handed batter and the first pitch he swings fouls that one back behind the plate. He was in the Cardinals organization last year was in nine games last year in the big leagues and then he signed in the off season with the Pirates and was playing in AAA for them. He eventually uh was placed on waiverss and claimed by Texas back around miday. So he’s only been in their organization for oh about a month and a half or so. TripleA was hitting just 225. 48 games in AAA this year between the Pirates organization and the Rangers system. Here’s the pitch and he fouled that one off his leg it looked like. So he’s out of the batter circle trying to get a little circulation going. The counts one ball, two strikes. Yeah, you’ll see that a lot with that slider. That slider that comes down and in. When you get on top of that, it’s going to go right down towards your foot. We’ve seen that twice. Obviously Sam Hagerty started the game with smoke in his front foot. I’m looking at Sam Hagerty after seeing that. He’s in the on deck circle and he reached down immediately started readjusting his shin guard like uhoh. I know the feeling. So, back in the box is Helman. Runner at first, two outs, 2-1 Texas here in the second. Next pitch and he had him reaching there and he chops that one foul over on the third base side. They got to Kikuchi for a couple of runs in the first inning. Kikuchi’s had some first inning trouble this year. Yeah, he has. His erra in the first 550 and the other the only other inning he’s had issues is the sixth inning. Got a 6.75 RA in the sixth. Here’s the next pitch. That one misses. see where Toronto is up 84 against the White Socks in the eighth inning in Chicago. And if the Blue Jays win that ball game, that would be their ninth win in a row. Here’s the next pitch. This is popped in the air shallow right center. Waiting for it under and putting it away is Jorge Solair. And that is how the inning will end. They got a leadoff hit and that was it. We’re hit it. Take a hack at guessing which baseball player or manager said the following. I really don’t know what to say. I’m just uh so happy I gave something. These people cheer. We all did. I mean, it was a great game. Both teams played incredible. It was a great game. Joe Adell is the batter and the first pitch on its way. And that is a pitch chased and missed by Adele. That was a first pitch slider. Bill Adell’s hitting .248 19 homers, second best on the club. That ties him for eighth in the AL. And he swings at the pitch and lifts that foul. That’s going to get back and out of play. 0 and two on Joe Adell. That good fast ball 98. And this is where that combination, you don’t see it often. The power stuff, but the command to go with it, it usually doesn’t go hand in hand. Here’s one grounded deep in the hole at short. Long throw by Seager. Bounces it over there and it’s handled by Burger for the out. One away on the 6-3 ground out. And usually when you see power arms, there’s usually some command issues. Not with Jacob Deg Grom. He’s always had that great pinpoint command with that elite stuff. So here’s Solair who’s trying to get things going at the plate. His average down to 206. He takes that one low for ball one. It’s one ball, no strikes. Four pitch m mix for Jacob Deg Grom. Forcing fast ball slider change up. And we just saw the curve ball right there that he only uses 5% of the time. And the next delivery. And here’s one that’s lifted high in the air. It’s hit well out into left center field. And that ball’s going to bang off the wall in left center. And will coast into second base. Angels have their second double in two innings against the ground. A runner in scoring position. The potential tying run. And the next batter will be Luis Renhipo. Yeah, this is a fast ball that Solair is on it. Jorge Solair. That’s he’s now two for six in his career against Jacob Deg Grom. And this one, if he gets some air underneath it, that ball would have been way back. Here’s the pitch. And that is a chase and a miss. and Hippo 226 batting average hits in eight of his last 10 games. The switch hitter takes that one for a ball. It’s one ball, one strike. That double by Jorge Cer 11 off his bat. Right-hander is ready and the next pitch and jammed was Ranifo. He fights that one off, fouls it off on the third base side. Yeah, the ground is so good with that fast ball command that he can pump in 98 99 on that inside corner down at the knees and go right to the other corner the very next pitch. Here’s the one two. Little bit low. It misses for a ball. Jacob Deg Grom this year on the road. Just a 170 average against him. Second best in the majors. Here’s the next delivery. And that’s one that is fouled off. Staying alive is Reno. bounded off inside the batter circle. Luis Renifo 200 on that last road trip. 5 for 25. Here’s the delivery. And that one is outside. It’s a full count. Three and two this bottom of the second inning. It’s being brought to you tonight by Coors Light. Corors Light choose Chill. We’ll see what gives. Here’s the 3-2 on its way. It’s chopped on the right side. Easy one hopper for the second baseman. And Simeon will throw out the Angels second baseman Ranipo on the play. Moving over to third base now with two outs in the inning is the Angels need a two out hit from Travis Darno. Look at Wyatt Langford, their left fielder. He plays shallow. He’s got the good speed. We’ve seen the cannon even on that double by plays it off the wall and in almost overshoots Marcus Simeon at second base. Here’s the pitch. And that one is low and away on Darno. Darno is hitting 211. He’s had just 11 hits his last 50 times up. Here’s the next delivery. And that one from Deg Grom. A little bit blown away. Barno in his career has had a home run against Deg Grom. That’s the only one any Angels ever hit against him at least on the current Angels roster in the pitch. And this is hit well out into left field. Chasing after it is Langford and he just hit another home run against them. Two-run shot. Angels have the lead. It’s 32. Three straight sliders. Two out of the zone. And this one spins right in the middle of the zone. And Travis Darno on it. We talked about how shallow Langford plays and he went had a long run going after this. Runs out of space. This ball goes over the short wall down in that left field corner. Put the Angels on top. Three to two. 370. The tail of the tape down that left side. Chad Stevens is the batter. His first time up at the big A. And the first pitch he takes it for ball one. So, the Angels have scored three straight unanswered runs and put something on the board in each of the two innings here against the Gro. And you were just talking about it. That breaks his streak right there. He has given up more than two runs. He hasn’t done that in his last 15 starts. One ball, one strike is the count. Here’s the next delivery that’s fouled back behind the plate. Well, good to see some runs on the board for the Angels. The Angels coming into this game had scored four runs or less in six of the last seven games. And of course, the Angels had uh three one-run games against the Toronto Blue Jays. Dropped all three of those over the weekend. Here’s the next pitch. And that’s a good fast ball right there. Chased and missed at 98. And that’s how the inning will end. But the Angels put a two spot on the board thanks to Darno. His fifth of the season. It’s 3-2 Angels as we head to the third on Angels Radio. Also available on the Angels Radio app. El Nacho. This is the leadoff batter in their quarter tonight. Sam Hagerty the pitch in there for a called strike. Gave him a fast ball 94. And here’s the next delivery. That’s a little bit high. 101 is the count. Hagerty singled his first time up and then he scored on the two-run homer by Seager who’s waiting on deck. Here’s the next pitch. 1-1. Grounded sharply and it skips off the glove of the third baseman Stevens. Over to stop it is Neto. just throws a little bit late and that is going to be another leadoff hit in this ball game for Hagerty. So he’s on and Seager will be the next batter. Yeah, this is right to the left of Chad Stevens gets a little bit of a glove on it. Slows it down a little bit. Needto both feet on that outfield grass and still and Hagerty can run. Made it a interesting play at first. Here’s the pitch on Seager and he went after the first one and fouls it off on the left side. Back and out of play. We’re in the top of the third. Angels have a 3-2 lead. Top of the third inning. It’s presented by Modello. Brewed with the finest ingredients for a taste that’s pure gold. Next pitch and Seager checking on that one on the appeal. The umpire at third base. Marley, the crew chief, says he was holding. Here’s the next delivery. That’s low. Two balls and one strike to count. Needto is playing pretty much up the middle and Stevens the third baseman’s playing in the shortstop hole. Here’s the next pitch. That’s inside. Kikuchi has fallen behind here on Seager. Three and one. Cory Seager usually pretty good against lefties. This year struggling 182 against lefties. But that home run he hit in the first fourth one he’s hit off a lefty. And there’s a slider that he takes low and away for ball four. They put their first two on to start things off here in the top of the third inning. First walk allowed by Kikuchi. This built this pitching marquee up today. Both allstar pitchers. A little shaky so far out of the gate. Yep. No doubt. Simeon will be the batter. He grounded out the short his first time up. Now it’s Renhifo’s kind of playing up the middle. The second baseman Neto is in the hole over there at short. Our good buddy Jose Modto would say they are human beings. So you would say that they’re not robots. They’re not robots. Here’s the next pitch. And that’s a Chase Santa miss. 0 and2 is the count. One thing lately, Kikuchi’s been racking up a lot of strikeouts in recent starts. Seven in his last start. The one before that 12, the one before that nine, the one before that 10. He has yet to get a strike out so far here in the early going. We’re in the third. Has two strikes on Simeon, though. Curveball’s been a big part of that. Here’s the next pitch. And that one a little bit low. This copyrighted broadcast presented by Authority of Angels Baseball may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form. The accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent of Angels Baseball. Here’s the next pitch. And there’s a chase and a miss. And that’s his first strike out of the night. right there. Got it on a sinker. And Simeon is out for the second time in the spa game. And the batter will be the cleanup man, Adoleis Garcia. First strikeout right there for USA Kikuchi. First Angel strikeout is presented by Circle K. Kakuchi wheels around and bluffs a toss to second base. Hagerty is the runner there. He has good speed. So, a single finger to bring him in and pitch. And that’s lifted foul right side. It’s going to push back where the seats out of play. Yeah, Dol Garcia numbers really off this year. That 228 average, 10 home runs, four, but he’s driven in some runs. 49 RBI’s. Here’s the 01. That’s fouled off to our right. Back and out of play since the start of throwback week at the Big A. festivities including themed in-game entertainment, throwback oriented giveaways. Angels with their throwback uniforms on all week for this home stand. Here’s the next pitch. Little pop into shallow right field. That’s trouble. It’s going to land in there for a hit. Coming home and scoring the tying run from second base will be Hagerty. So they come right back to tie it up and with one out have runners now at the corners. Well, he strikes out Simeon with a good change up. This is a change up, but it is up just enough. It’s not even a strike. It’s off the outside part of the plate. Garcia almost just throws his bat at it and flicks it out into right field. Well, the Angels unable to hold on to the lead here in this inning. And now the Rangers are threatening to regain the lead. Batter is Langford the pitch and he swings at the first one and lifts one into shallow left center. Netto is going to go back make the catch on that one and no chance for a tag by Seager the runner over there at third base. That’s out number two. Big out right there. Jonah who’s had a hit so far. His only time up. He will be the next batter. Texas already with five hits and three runs. The Angels three hits and three runs. Here’s the pitch on him. Switch hitter takes that one outside for ball one. When the Angels bat in the bottom of the third, it’ll be the top of the batting order. Needto, Shadowell, and Trout. Kikuchi’s next pitch that’s hit sharply, but foul. A liner bounces down the left side after it landed in foul territory. And then the ball kicked off the side wall and lands all the way out on the warning track out there in the left. Yeah, that’s another slider that stays up in the zone. You were talking about those 38 strikeouts the last four starts for Kikuchi. 14 of them come on the slider, 11 of them on the curveball. as the count one and one on him and the next pitch bounced on the third base side that skips off the glove of the diving third baseman Stevens and the ball trickles into left field and that’s going to drive in the runner Seager from third and now the Rangers are back on top. It’s 4-3. Chad Stevens is playing right on that line. Dives for it and just can’t come up with it. It’s off the side of his glove. If he catches this, this is going to be there’s going to be a play at first base. And that’s one thing when you got a lefty on the mound, that left side of the infield usually gets worked a lot. There couple plays already that Chad Stevens has not been able to get to. And initially on the road trip, we were seeing him at second and then he switched over to third yesterday and again today. He and Renipo have been flip-flopping. brief meeting out at the mound who got that single. He’s already had two hits in the ball game. So is Hagerty, their leadoff batter. So the batter now is Jake Burgerer. He flyed out to right his first time up. Runners at first and second. First pitch foul back behind the plate. Yeah, this game has not gone according to the script that we painted. Exactly. Both these guys have been flat out dealing. Yeah, no doubt. Here’s the pitch. And that’s a little bit high. One ball, one strike. Yeah, you say Kikuchi last three starts 1 and0 a 1.83 83 erra. His last 12 starts 3 and2 a 2.15 erra. Here’s the next delivery. That’s fouled back behind the plate one and two. Brewers beat the Dodgers today 9 to1. Royals beat the Pirates 9-3. So there have been some highscoring games around the majors. Guardians are leading in Houston 6-5. That’s in the bottom of the eighth. And in Cleveland is trying to snap a 10-ame losing streak. Tigers keep rolling. They beat Tampa Bay 5 to one. One ball, two strikes. Here’s the next one. And that is a chase and a miss. Ball popped away from Darno. Retrieves it. Fires the first to complete the strikeout. And the inning is over. Pair of strikeouts, but a pair of runs giving the Rangers the lead back. They’re up four to three. We go to the bottom of the third on Angels Radio. Also available, the big hits, all the great rats. Visit sitt.com today. Here’s one taken for a ball. One and two on Zack Netto. The Gro with the next pitch. It’s low. Two and two. The count. Was on this date in Angels history. July the 7th, 2006. 19 years ago today. John Lackey surrendered a leadoff double to Marseay in a ball game in Oakland. And the pitch. That’s lined into left. Sliding in. Unable to make the catch on that one is the left fielder Langford. That’s going to fall in for a hit. It’s a low liner and he just wasn’t quite able to make the grab on that one as he lunged forward. Might have got a little piece of his love, but he just couldn’t hold on to it. Man, he is so good. We talked about he plays shallow to start with. This is a safety line drive that he I thought this is a hit. Easy hit once it left the bat, but he made this a close play and he does the right thing. He puts his body in front of it to make sure that that ball does not get by him. Yeah, he had that bouncer about a foot in front of him and then it skipped off his glove. Batter is Showell. Pitch in there for a called strike. We’ll get back to that John Lackey masterpiece that happened on this date 19 years ago in just a moment. And here’s the delivery. Shell takes that one for a called strike. Mentioned John Lackey surrendered a leadoff hit in a game to the A’s Mark Hat who now 19 years later is their manager. And then after that, Lackey retired the next 27 batters in a row and route to a one hit shut out in that ball game. 21st one hitter in Angels history. Here’s the next pitch. And Shadowwell bounced that one off his foot. Foul ball. 0 and2 is the count. Fans experience Angels baseball with the friends and family fun pack for only $44. Get four tickets, four hot dogs, and four soft drinks. Call 7144 Angels or visit angels.com/funpack. Shaell is back in the box. Good size lead for Neto over there. Not running, however. And the pitch. And that’s a pitch that is taken for ball one. It’s one ball, two strikes. Jacob Deg Grom now 37 years old. And here’s the next pitch. That’s bounced to the right of the mound. Stopped by Simeon. Flips to second. Relay to first. Not in time. Was not hit sharply, but they came close to turning a double play on that one. Shwell just beat that relay throw from Seager. Fielder’s choice. Needto erase that second and Trout will be the next batter. Yeah, you didn’t think there was any shot. This breaks the bat of Showell. It’s just a slow grounder. Simeon has got to come in and get it. Just flips it to Seager and Seager just throws it across to see what happens. And Shawell barely made that. Trout who had a sack fly his first time up. Pitch on Mike and that one in there for a called strike. Wow. That 97 just slices the outside corner. Crowd coming into this ball game had only two career hits against the ground who hasn’t really pitched much in his career against the Angels. Here’s the next delivery and that one is low and the counts one ball one strike. Just the third career start for the Gro against the Angels and he had worked only 11 total innings in his career against the Angels. Here’s the pitch. Trout taking that one low. Trout has been picking up a lot of walks and even though he’s missed a lot of time this season with the Angels. Mike Trout is tied for ninth in the American League in walks. Here’s the pitch. Takes that one and that’s in there. So it’s an even count. Two and two on Trout. Tough to do anything with that pitch. And that’s where Deg Grom works. That’s 98. once again slices the outside corner. Yeah, Dick Deg Grom the Angels have only faced him twice. Last year was just a comeback from Tommy John. That was right at the end of the year. Here’s the delivery and that’s low and away. And the only other time was 2017 when he was with the Mets. That’s it. full count on Trout and he’s been working pitchers at the plate, adding a lot with three ball counts against him. Deg Gro is ready and the payoff pitch. Trout goes after it and fouls it off to our right. That’s going to get back and out of play. That one there at 99’s had shoulder and elbow issues. He’s had back issues in recent years. The pitch back behind the plate. five-time all-star now. Had the Tommy John elbow surgery back in 2023. He’s had that surgery twice. And at 37, still pumping it in there. Here’s the next delivery. Trout again swings, fouls one up on the right side, and that is going to push back to the seats. Backing out of play. Yeah, great at bat here developing for Mike Trout. Eight pitch at bat. And that last pitch at 100 on that outside part of the plate. So a long bat going on here. One out. The ground with another 3-2 on Trout. Good eye on that one. He takes ball four. It’s the first walk given up by Deg Grom. Angels have the pair on with one away for Taylor Ward. And I don’t know how many hitters in baseball would have been able to lay off this. This is 100 miles an hour and he’s already painted him on the outside corner. This one is just off the outside corner. Trout able to lay off it. A hit here could tie up the ball game. And the pitch on Ward did not get off a good swing there. Kind of checked his swing. Wasn’t sure. And the pitch strike one. Angel’s first walk is presented by Johnny Walker. Keep walking. Here’s the next delivery. That one is low. this ball game tonight. Coming into the action, five of the hitters in the Angels lineup had never faced the Grom. Ward just limited time batting against him. 0 for two coming into the game. Harry grounds one back to the mound. Pitcher goes to second. Relay to first late and Ward was hustling there. He tried to turn a double play for the second time in this inning. And Rangers are going to look at this quickly. because they can and they are not going to challenge this one. Yeah, Taylor Ward, this one’s right back to Deg Grom. Everything is right on this. He gets rid of it quick. Gets it to Semian. Seamian gets rid of it quick. But just the speed and the hustle of Taylor Ward beats the return throw. Keeps the inning alive. And Joe Adell, who on that last road trip, 391 for Joe Adell. Nine for 23. I take that back. 304 for Joe Adele. Seven for 23 a home run and nine RBI’s for Adele. He had never faced the ground coming into this game. Batting against him for the second time tonight. He rounded out the short to see first time up and takes ball one. Runners at first and third. Two outs. 4-3 Texas in the third. The Gro ready the pitch and Adele swings, fouls it off right side. That’s going to get back and out of play. Had hits in 15 of his last 17 ball games. Here’s the next delivery. That’s lone outside. Joe Adell does not make that AL Allstar team. We kind of narrowed it down to Kikuchi and Joe Adell. Obviously Taylor Ward numbers are probably right there. The one that shocks me is Julio Rodriguez with Seattle. There’s a pitch low. Yeah. And you could even argue that Randy Rosena, his teammates having a better year than him. I I mean, you could have George Springer’s having a better year. Joe Adele’s having a better year. Taylor Ward’s numbers are better. That that one right there. And there’s It seems like every year there’s always a couple that you scratch your head with. And that one certainly not deserving from my viewpoint at all. Here’s the 3-1 on Adele. Fouls that one off. The National League Juan Sodto not a allstar this year. Neither is Trey Turner or the Phillies. There’s always going to be some snubs. It happens every year. And there could be some late additions to the Allstar teams before the games play next week. True. And one good thing here, Taylor Ward will be on the move here. Three and two to Joe Adell with two outs. Now a ball in the gap. Ward might be able to score. And Adoleis Garcia, he might be 30 yard 30 ft away from that right field foul line. 3-2 once again. And Adele takes. And couple of walks issued here in this inning. Angels have loaded up the bases for Solair who’s already doubled here in the inning. Mike Maddox, the Rangers pitching coach on his way out to talk with Jacob Deg Grom. Fans, register your little angel for the Junior Angels Kids Club presented by OC Waste and Recycling. Members receive four ticket vouchers, a Zack Netto headband, and more for only $20. visit angels.com/junior angels. The meeting still going on out there. I I think that at bat, that last at bat to Joe Adell, again, you’ve got a guy that is pinpoint command, but it just shows you where Joe Adele is right now. Lays off a 32 slider that two months ago he would have been swinging at. Yeah, he’s a lot different hitter even from a year ago. Yes. And he ended up hitting just 207. First pitch on Solair. He takes that one for ball one. Here’s the next pitch on Solair. Piles that one back behind the plate. Now it’s one ball, one strike, right-hander against right-hander. Runners everywhere. Two outs to pitch. And that’s a good take right there. That was a borderline pitch ball, too. Two and one the count. Solair got a fast ball and smoked it in the gap in left center field. His first at bat. Here’s the next one on Solair. Chases and misses that pitch. It was a fast ball elevated in 98 mph. Two balls, two strikes. And here’s the pitch that’s found off on the right side. We’re talking about allstar snubs this season. Raphael Deers is another one, but he’s a guy who’s played in both leagues this year, so that kind of splits his numbers a little bit. It does. It’s hard to add him to the National League because he all most of his numbers came from the American League. The Red Sox. Here’s the 2-2. And boy, another close one. And that’s ball three. So Deg Grom, who normally doesn’t walk people, he’s walked two of the last three batters here in this inning. And he has a full count now against Solair. Two outs, bases loaded. Bottom of the third, 43 Texas. And now time is called backed out of the batter circle. Vance trying to funnel some energy into the Angels here against the Grom. Everyone is ready. The payoff pitch and he got looking. Ser thought it was ball four. He’s pleading his pace to no avail and the inning ends on the strikeout and for Deg Gro. That’s a big one there. His second of the game. The Angels will leave the bases loaded. Introducing baseball’s all new national pregame show. MLB Tonight live at 5. It’s Zach Neto in the first pitch of ball that counts one ball, no strikes. Neto’s two for two against the Grammy and never faced them until tonight. Swings at the next one, fouls it off out of play. Zach Neto is our player to watch presented by Kettle One Vodka. Yeah, I don’t think Zach Neto’s ever met a fast ball that he doesn’t like and he got him first at bat. Fast ball hunter on the inside part of the plate. Got the base hit. Takes that one a little bit outside. That was a change up and Degr doesn’t throw many of them. No. And his second at bat, he got his slider. So Jake the Grumps said, “Hey, here’s the change up then. Here comes the pitch. And that’s a pitch that is in there for a strike. That’s that backup slider right there. That one they wanted it down and away and it just doesn’t do anything. Doesn’t finish it. It just spins on that inside corner. The 22 on Neto swings and lifts one high in the air down the right field side. The first baseman’s going back. The right fielders coming in. That ball drops. Wow. Boy, just barely foul. They had two in pursuit of that one. Both Burger and Adolles Garcia neither caught it and they were lucky because it just dropped foul. And it almost looks like right there Adole Garcia just he almost gives up on it because Burger’s right there crowding his space. Yeah. Yeah, they are fortunate. That just is foul. But Zach Nettle gets another pitch here. Still two and two on him. The ground’s at 80 pitches now in this game. And here’s the next one. And Neto, did he go after that one? Yes, he did. Zach Neto saying, “Hey, ask for help.” And I’m with him on that one. That’s what the first base umpire is for. Rock Beloo. The home plate umpire is the guy that rings him up. Get a chance to look at it. Yes, he did. Yeah, it looked like he went after that pitch. So, the strikeout is out number one. We got a chance to see it super slow-mo, though. Yep. Pitch in there on Nolan Shadowwell. The third strikeout in the ball game for the Gro who’s walked two along the way. And the next pitch and that one evens up the count one and one. Earlier today, the Angels placed reliever Hunter Strickland on the 15-day injur list, right shoulder inflammation. And the Angels called up pitcher Victor Maderos from Triple A Salt Lake. And actually Victor Maderos is getting loose in the Angels bullpen. Yep. He was doing some starting Triple A this year and we saw him earlier. Brock Burke is also throwing down there. Counts one and two on Shaunell. Deg Gro’s next delivery. All popped down the left side and chasing hard. Unable to get to it in foul ground is Wyatt Langford just dropped out of his reach in foul territory. So it’s still one and two. Yeah, he’s an impressive outfielder. That one I you just didn’t know where he was. He would have I think caught this baseball. They thought the wall was right on top of them. A little more space here at the Big A compared to the Rangers home ballpark. Counts one ball, two strikes. And here’s the next pitch. And that is a swing and a miss. So, a pair of strikeouts to start off the Angels fifth inning. Two are down. Mike Trout will be the next batter. Bottom of the fifth inning is sponsored by Dell Taco. I think that’s Globe Life Field just popped into my head. Well, I can tell you you are absolutely correct. The old ballpark was Globe Life Park. I got confused there for a second. One and0 is the count on Mike Trout and he fouls that one right back behind the plate. One ball, one strike. Still good fast ball there. 97 swings and fouls that one back. Yeah, their old ballpark that wasn’t really that old when they retired it, right? The Globe Life Park. They used that stadium for 26 years. That was it. And it’s still there. They play some I don’t know uh what is it? XFL football games there or USFL, whatever the uh spring football league is these days. There’s Trout finding one into left field. That’s going to drop in for a hit. Mike Trout looks out a sack fly walking out a single against the Grom. Two out base runner and Mike Maddox on his way out. This is a good at bat for Trout. All fast balls first three pitches. the fact that one pitch previous was 98 and then he throws him a slider. Trout able to be on it. Angels trailing 4-3 here in the bottom of the fifth inning. The score update is presented by OCNavigator. Visit ocnavigator.org for mental health resources. Jacob Deg Grom at 90 pitches and they’ve been really really watching his pitch count this season. He’s only had one start this year of over 100 pitches. Well, you were kind of reading my mind because as you get deeper in the season, he’s a guy that didn’t even throw 11 innings total last year and now he’s already in 106 innings this year. I mean, that’s a dramatic jump from a year ago. how this is the most innings he’s thrown in the last five years. Yeah. So, they they’re paying attention to it. They want Jacob Deg Grom the entire season. They don’t want to wear him out again. This is his full season back from Tommy John surgery. There’s one that’s chased and missed. And he’s usually been able to get deeper into games because he is so pitch efficient. 0 and one on Taylor Ward. Here’s the next delivery. Swings at it. Fouls it back to our right out of play. I think two is the count. Couple of teams in the AL West off today. Seattle offs the A’s. Here’s the next delivery. That’s very high. It misses. The Guardians ended up beating the Astros 7 to five in Houston tonight, opening game of that series. And for Cleveland, they had gone a week and a half without a win. They snap a 10-game losing streak with that victory tonight in Houston. Here’s the next pitch. That’s fouled off by Ward again on the right side, out of play. Jacob Deg Grom. That’s his 94th pitch of the night. That one 98. Still has a good velocity. Here’s the one-two once again. And there’s a swing and a miss. Struck him out. It was a slider that gets Ward. And in the inning, three strikeouts for Deg Grom. Every game night is a chance to go big with MLB Big Inn. Turn on baseball’s only nightly show that brings you the biggest plays of the night. He was in a game earlier this season for the Angels and his first pitch. That one was outside. One ball and no strikes is the count and Madero set. Here’s the next delivery. That one taken for a ball. The counts now two balls and no strikes. Mado started 11 games at Triple A Salt Lake. Did not pitch at all in relief for them. And there’s a pitch that is ball three. It’s 3-0. And he had a 5 and4 record in those 11 starts. 4.09 RA. Was averaging a little bit less than a strikeout an inning. And here he is unable to throw a strike at all to Jonah. That pitch was low. And that’s ball four. See Maderos a few times over the last couple of seasons for the Angels. Has a good arm. Has not had a whole lot of success though in the brief time he’s been in the big leagues last year. was in four games for the Angels. And there’s a pitch that’s in there for a strike. It’s nothing and one on the batter Jake Burgerer. Maderos was 0 and1 and four relief appearances for the Angels a year ago with an RA of over 11. There’s one that’s fouled off on the right side. Gets him back and out of play. So he’s in front. No balls, two strikes. And the thing that got him last year was command. Ended up having six walks in five and a third. Here’s the next pitch. And that’s way outside. That was a good stop by Darno. We’ll give you Kikuchi’s numbers in just a moment. He cannot win it. And at the moment on the hook for a loss is still have time to come back in this ball game. Kikuchi worked five innings. He allowed six hits. The four runs against him all earned. There’s a swing and a miss. And that was a good breaking ball. Looked like a sweeper. Burger is a strikeout victim. One away. Rest of the numbers for Kikuchi. Those four earned runs. He walked two, struck out four. And he did allow a homer. 97 pitches, 67 for strikes. Yeah, there’s a couple plays that were out there that were not made behind him and they are going to go to a pinch hitter here. This is Josh Smith who is batting for Ezekiel Duran. And there’s a chase and a miss for strike one. That is a big sweeping slider. Strike out to Burger. That one started on the inside corner and worked its way completely off the outside part of the plate. Here’s the pitch on its way. Josh Smith, the batter, was kind of the mystery batter there momentarily. He uh was introduced a pitch or two into his at bat. It’s one ball, one strike. Yeah. And Duran, who is a right-handed hitter, is not there. And it’s a lefty now at the plate. Right. And he’s not a switch hitter. Nope. That was my first punch that there was a different hitter up there. Ready is Maderos. Here’s the next delivery. Smith taking. And that was a pitch that moves the count to two balls and a strike. Going to preempt the next guy. Evan Carter is in the on deck circle. figures he will be batting for Michael Helman. Next pitch on Smith fouls that one off on the left side. The Angels call to the bullpen. It’s brought to you by Cox Mobile. The smart way to mobile. Another tight game for the Angels. Angels trailing 4-3 here in the top of the six. 24y old Victor Mado’s pitching and that one a pitch that is inside and the count’s full three and two. Maderos was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, but grew up in South Florida in the Miami area. And there’s a pitch that’s going to miss. And that is ball four. That ball actually hits him in the chest. This is that sweeping slider that once again starts middle of the plate and ends up hitting Smith right in the chest. So he’s blocked one and now hit one and Barry Enright, the pitching coach is going to go out there. We want to keep this game as close as possible right now. And again, it’s hard that that we’re actually talking about the Rangers pitching, but mentioned it in countdown to first pitch. They have the number one pitching staff in all of baseball. They came into this game a 3.23 ERA. That’s number one. Their starters erra 3.22. That is number one in the majors. And their bullpen this year 3.33. That is fifth best in the majors. So, the Rangers have always been known for their offensive numbers, not their pitching numbers. Evan Carter will be pinch hitting. Angels bullpen quiet. So, the Rangers will have to make changes at third base and center field. The Angels step up in the bottom of the sixth and the first pitch on Carter. He swings at that one and fouls it back behind the plate as Carter digs in. Lefty batter. Player who’s had some injury issues the last couple of seasons. And here’s the next pitch that’s in there for a called strike. And the count goes to 0 and2. Evan Carter, he’s hitting 273, four homers, 11 driven in. This is just his 36th game. And the Rangers are playing game 91 of the season. He’s been in the Miners for a bit this year as well. Here’s the two strike pitch. And he got him looking. Caught the inside corners. Ruck him out. Really good pitch. 97 on the inside corner. I showed him a couple of pitches on the outside part of the plate. This one right on that inside corner and Travis Darno just holds it there. Two strikeouts in the inning here for Maderos. Runners at first and second. The top of the sixth being presented by Coca-Cola. And swinging at the pitch is Hagerty fouls that one off. Backing out of play. Angels in the bottom of the inning will have Adele Cair and Renifo. We’ll see what the Rangers do pitching wise. Here’s the next pitch. And that’s low and inside. Good basketball there at 98. Here’s the next pitch. And this is chopped on the first base side. That’s a foul ball. Got a little piece of Hagerty. And Sam Hagerty started this game off with a foul off his front left foot. Now he just fouls one off his front right foot. He is a switch hitter. Not sure the Angels initially were convinced of that. Saw that call to uh check it out on replay back in the clubhouse. No challenge. Here’s the next delivery. That’s fouled off the screen back behind home. So the count’s one and two on Hagerty Maderos. Good fast tonight. Right-hander is set. 21 pitches in this inning. And here’s the next one. He misses high and outside with that one. That was the slider, not the sweeper. The sweeper would have probably got that outside corner. 1111 is the breakdown on his 22 pitches. Here’s the next one. Ground ball on the first base side and it’s fielded over there. The flip the second. It is in time and people got it over to Neto and they end up getting the out on the base runner Smith at second base. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts one into right down the line. It may go. Go crazy, folks. Go crazy. He remains in the ball game and also staying in the game playing in center field is Evan Carter. Smith is their third baseman. And here is Armstrong’s first pitch. Straight away center, two are gone. That’s a cutter in the middle of the plate. Left the bat. Boy, he just felt like he flipped it, but you immediately check out where the center fielder is, and he was already cruising to the spot. Ran Heo, the batter, he’s grounded out twice to second in this game. Switch hitter batting left takes and that misses this bottom of the sixth inning brought to you this evening by United Airlines. Next one on Renifo. A ball that he pops in a shallow left center. That’s going to drop in for a base hit. Ran Heo’s first hit tonight. Sad hits in nine of his last 11 ball games. Swinging a bit or bad of late. And Travis Darnau had a two-run homer in this game. will be the next angel batter with two outs here in the sixth. That one right there, Renifo just fights it off. That cutter coming into him. See if Reno starts to run a little bit. It’s only stole two bases, been caught five times. Pretty good lead off first, but was not on the move. Angels with the worst percentage as far as stolen base in the majors this year, just 67.8%. 8%. Here’s the delivery and that’s blown away with some of the changes that they’ve made over the last few years to increase base running. Just it hasn’t really contributed to any spike for the Angels. It has put a spike around the majors though. Stolen bases have been up since they limited the number of times pitchers could throw to first base. They also made the bags a little bit bigger. One ball, two strikes to count on Darno after he fouled one back behind home. This game in the hands of both bullpens now. And here’s the next pitch. Let’s hit into left center field. Hit pretty well. Chasing is Langford. He can’t make the catch. Bangs off the base of the wall. Headed home is Rando. The throw is going to be way late and he will score. It’s been a big night for the backed up catcher Travis Darno. A three RBI night and we’re tied at four. That’s another one I thought he gets. And certainly you watch the outfielders and they are just sprinting to the gap in left center field. This ball stays in. This is a break for the Angels. If this ball bounces over, you would add second and third, but it hits the top of the wall and stays in play. And that allows Renifo to come all the way around from first. Travis Darno carrying the mail tonight. Well, a base hit if the Angels could get one would give the Angels the lead. Angels had a brief 3-2 lead earlier in this ball game. And it looks like Lamont Wade Jr. is going to pinch hit for Chad Stevens. He will leave the game 0 for two. Here’s the pitch. And Wade tried to check on that one and foul tipped that one to the catcher Jonah. It’s no balls in one strike. And the Angels strike here with two outs. Wade is hitting 163 and asks for time. Gets it. Look like Reed Deppers is up in the Angels bullpen. Could see him in the seventh. Angels playing another close ball game. That’s been the theme here of late. And there’s a pitch that is chased and missed. And the count’s 0 and2 all those all three games in Toronto one-run games. There’s a shot in the center. That’s going to drop in for a base hit. Darno is going to be waved home. The throw is way offline. now caught in a rund down his way between first and second. They’ll apply the tag on him about a third of the way towards second base, but he delivers a hit that gives the Angels the lead, although the inning does come to an end. We have completed six and will hit to the seventh. Angels back on top now 54 on Angels Radio. Also available on the Angels Radio app. Celebrate every win with Don Julio Reposado. So, Victor Maderos leaves. He just joined the Angels today and he is the pitcher of record if the Angels hold on to this lead and win this ball game. We start the seventh inning off in the first pitch and Seager goes after that one. That was a slider. He missed it for strike one. Now, you look at where the Angels are or the Rangers are in their lineup. That’s why you have Reed Detoners here in the seventh. And the next pitch, a chase and a miss. That’s the third time he’s been on base safely in his four times up. And the batter will be Marcus Simeon. Three straight sliders. This one just doesn’t get exactly where he wanted it, but it’s not a bad pitch. It’s down and on that outer third. He’s trying to bury that one. It stays in the strike zone. Simeon digs in, goes after the pitch, grounds it to Neto. He goes to second for one. Relay to first. Close play. Got it. A double play. Well, you didn’t know if it was Possible that the Angels would turn that one, but they did. Good job by Neto, Renhifo, and Shawell on the receiving end to the last throw. Yeah, this is this is all Zach Neto. He puts something on this throw. He’s got a backhand. It sets his feet and gives Reano a little giddy up to that baseball when Ranifo gets rid of it quickly. And that is the 84th double play the Angels have turned this year. That is most in the majors. So the two gone quickly now. Batter is Garcia. First pitch was a ball. He’s gone one for three with an RBI single and he takes that one for a called strike one and one. When the Angels step up in the bottom half of the seventh, leading this game five to four. Netoell and Trout will be the hitters. We’ll see what the Rangers do pitching wise. They do have action in their bullpen. Looks like Jacob Webb is warming up for them and the pitch and that one is a little bit outside for a ball. It’s two balls, one strike. Talking to some of the Rangers people earlier today and they were talking about their best bullpen pieces Hobie Miller where we used to have Hobie Miller. Yeah, that was a few years ago. Jacob Webb who’s warming up for them right now. Also a former Angelner pitched for the Angels in the COVID season, the 2020 season. There’s one that’s fouled off on the right side out of play. And he is just a funky lefty that drops down side arm, changes speeds, does not throw hard, big sweeping breaking ball. He has been one of their biggest weapons out of that bullpen. Here’s Deadmmer’s pitch in popped foul out of play. Right side of home plate back to the seats out of play. De has pitched in two of the three games in Toronto. He is on some kind of run right now. Here’s the 2-2 again. Fly ball lifted into center. Joe Adell is going back. Has room and he’ll make the catch. The inning is over. About 5 ft shy of the rim of the track. Peppers only faces three batters in the inning, although they did have a single. And that was a slider way low and away. And Burgerer’s in the hole. 0 and2. Burger got sent down to the miners this season, which was kind of surprising. He was really struggling. He only went down for seven games and seemed to get things back on track. He hit over 380 the time he was in TripleA. Yeah. He embraced it. He actually wanted to go down there and kind of just get those reps to kind of figure everything out. Yep. Kind of clear his head a little bit. Felt he was hurting his club. Just couldn’t get his game going. And he was a guy who they signed in the off season. He was with Miami last year. He hit 29 homers, drove in 76 runs. And and it’s tough a lot of times to fix things here at the major league level because you’re going to get whatever your problem is, you’re going to see that same thing every night. There’s one that’s outside on him. One and two. You’re having problems with the certain pitch. Every team comes in there and tries to exploit that spot. Here’s the next pitch, the one two. And he missed that one. It got away from Darno. He’s going to have to make a long throw to first. And it takes the first baseman Shaell off the bag. So that’s going to be a strikeout wild pitch as it turns out and the batter is safe to keep the inning alive. Yeah, this is a really good slider. It is down and just hits right off the glove then off the chest protector and where Darnell’s chest he was just slightly tilted towards the Angels dugout which is down that third base line and that ball kicked away. unfortunate. So he keeps the inning alive. Josh Smith is the batter and he lines one into right field. This is going to roll all the way down in the corner. Burger is on his way to third. Just getting to the ball is Burgerer is going to head home and score without a throw. And boy oh boy did that strike out wild pitch come back to haunt the Angels. This game is now tied at five. Wow. unfortunate. This is a good at bat by Josh Smith. This is a slider down and in. He just pulls his hands and able to hit it right down into the corner. Perfect spot to be able to score. And that’s going to be it for Bachmann. He will be leaving and the Angels will go to the bullpen. Great moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. And the first batter he faces, Taylor Ward, the pitch in there for a called strike. Bottom of the eighth inning, it’s being presented by Farmers and Merchants Bank. Each team with five runs on eight hits. No errors on either side. And the Texas Rangers are the best fielding team in Major League Baseball this season. Highest fielding percentage. Their outfield can go get anything. And obviously Marcus Simeon, a goal glover there. Seager’s always been a really good defender. Josh Smith, who’s over there now, is a really plus defender. Jake Burgerer holding everything down at first. And their catcher behind the plate, Jonah’s former Gold Glove Award winner. So they that’s what keeps you in ball games. We’ve seen that tonight. Angels have not been able to. Here’s Ward topping one up very shallow right field. Backpedaling on the outfield grass making the catch to second baseman Marcus Simeon. Easy out, one gone. Yeah, when you play tight games, Angels have been playing tight games. You just don’t have the luxury of giving teams free passes or playing bad defense. The batter now is Joe Adele. He’s 0 for two with a walk in this game. And here comes the pitch. He takes on the outside part of the plate for a called strike. Right-hander against right-hander. Here’s Martin’s next pitch. And that’s a little bit low. The Angels have lost their last six one-run games in a row. And that was after the Angels at one point were 15 and six in one-run games, which at the time after those 21 one-run games was the best record in baseball. Bruce Adele lining one, but right at the second baseman for the right fielder, Garcia, and he will make the catch for the second out. Hit it sharply, but he’s retired. Two are gone, and the batter will be Solair. Yeah, and you just go back and start looking through those one-run losses, how are they occurring? Certainly runners and score positions been a big part of that, but the little plays that aren’t made behind you that sometimes they’re not errors. There’s hitting one down that right side. Long run for Garcia. It’s going to land back in the seats. Foul ball back and out of play. You know, they’re just the plays that aren’t made. 0 and one is the count. Angels coming off those three straight weekend games in Toronto. All one-run losses. And this is a five5 game here in the bottom of the eighth. Angels and Rangers. There’s a pitch that evens up the count and miss for a ball. One and one. Yeah. And you just hate the way it kind of occurred on a strike out by Sam Bachmann. Travis Darno unable to block the ball. Hits off his glove kicks it away far enough to where by the time he gets it up gets to it just makes an errant throw. That Shaunal had pulls Shaunal off the base and that just kept the inning alive as you talked about. A good at bat by Josh Smith. now it’s two and one on Cair and that is low and away is a guy the Angels have to figure out how to get him going at the plate. Yes, his first at bat against Jacob Deg Grom I He jumped all over fast ball. Next pitch he takes and that’s in there. You thought he had a walk. He had a similar at bat his second time up tonight where he was called out on strikes and was not pleased with the call by the home plate umpire Brock Belaloo. That one looks like if you believe in the box, that one slices that outside part of the box. So a full count. We’ll see what happens. Here’s the payoff delivery and this is chopped softly toward short. Gloved there by Seager and Siler is not running real hard to first base. He is retired and that’s how the inning will end. And that one to Hagerty in there for a strike. Nothing and one. Jansen becomes the pitcher of record. He replaces Brock Burke who threw one pitch to get the final out in the top of the eighth. Here’s the next delivery. That’s by the mound but off of Neto. He was playing near second and the Angels shortstop will not have a throw to first. Boy, another little thing happening here to the Angels. We’ll see how that one ends up being scored. It was hit sharply. This has got to be an error. It’s right to him. Reno is going to make a turn and he will stop at second base. Boy, the Angels are in business right now. Winning run at second. Travis Darnau had a big night tonight. Two-run homer, RBI double. He will be the next batter. Boy, when that one split the outfielders, you were thinking maybe Ren Heo could get three on it. And there was a slight bobble there by Langford out there and but his cannon of an arm. That’s when Ren Heo knew who picked up the baseball. Knows that he’s got a strong throwing arm. knows that he cannot make that first out at third base. You have to be 100%. And Reno has left the building. Yeah, he went back to the dugout. Not there is a meeting at the mound. I don’t know if he’s leaving the game or not. This is not a They’re not going to the bullpen. Now he’s on his way back out. might have needed some water after running that hard. Might have. Yep, he does. Exactly what he’s having. Yeah. And now he’s going to say something to Bo Porter, the third base coach, and route back to the second base bag where he’ll be the runner with no outs. Yeah. Rangers are thinking the Angels might be bunning here. Darnell does not have a sacrifice buck this season. Golden opportunity to win the ball game here in the bottom of the ninth. Martin is set. Here’s the pitch. That’s fouled off back behind the plate. No balls in a strike. You’re talking about Travis Darno. He has had a monster night. Angels five runs in the game. He’s driven in three of the five. Martin looking in for the sign. Dexan Heifo at second delivers and Arno checked the swing at pitch in there for a strike. 0 and2 is the count. Well, Darno knows what his responsibility is. He’s got to try to hit this ball on the right side to move Renipo. You got to roll your sleeves up right here. Here’s the next delivery. And there’s a pitch. He chases and misses. And Arno is out on strikes. And this is what killed the Angels in those extra inning games. They were unable to execute. You feel like we’re already in extra innings right now. Yeah. So, the batter now is going to be Kevin Newman. And this is going to be his first at bat of the ball game. That was a filthy O2 slider, by the way. So, everyone is ready. And here’s the pitch. Ground ball on the left side. That’s a base hit. We’ll see you friend’s going to call home will be held up as getting to the ball very quickly was the left fielder there Wyatt Langford and he would have had a short throw to the plate but Newman delivers and now the Angels have the winning run at third with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Well, we talked about how shallow Langford plays. He was even closer with Newman at the plate. In fact, all their outfielders were in and they are all going to play in now that anything that’s hit behind them, this game is over. They have to be in a spot to where they feel like they could catch it and throw out Bren Heo at the plate. Now they’re going to intentionally walk Neto to load the bases for Shawell. And I expect Brochi to go to the bullpen here. So Neto will be put on. Bruce Bochi making the slow walk to the mound and he has already signaled that he is going to go to the bullpin. So we’ll take a break when we get back. Bases loaded, one out. Angels batting in the bottom of the ninth in a 55 game on Angels Radio. Hobie Milner, the pitcher, swings. He lines one down the right side, but it drops just foul. Just a a foot or so off the line. A foul ball. Oh, Shaw puts his hands to his helmet as he’s running down to first base when he sees this ball just hook foul. Had a walk-off hit against the A’s earlier this season. Halo has come away with the victory six to five and you can put a Halo over this one. Shell getting congratulated by his teammates. You mentioned how patient he is and he was when he needed to be. Yep. Shaveel and Trout are the two most patient guys in this Angels lineup. And Shavewell, this one is just off the outside part of the plate and says, “Nope, I am not swinging. This game is over.” So the Angels victorious tonight here at the Big A. Win this ball game by the final score of 6 to5 here at Angel Stadium. And what a job by Luis Rano to start this ninth inning off with that double in the left center field gap that put everything in motion. Newman with a huge hit and it’s a walk-off walk to Nolan Showell. So the Angels come away with their first win of the season against the Texas Rangers. We had mentioned back in April when the Angels were there. The Angels dropped all three in a three-game series in Arlington. And that snaps an eightgame losing streak against the Texas Rangers. All right, Mark, we’re going to take you down. Trent Rush is standing by with Angel starting catcher tonight. He had a big night, Travis Darno. Yeah, he sure did. Terry Smith. Well, the home run early in the game gave you guys a lead and then you had a bigger hit later in the sixth inning. For you to come up with the hits that you were able to come up with in this game. just describe where you’re feeling at the plate right now and what was going through uh the mindset in those at bats. Uh those at bats I was just trying to hit the ball in the sweet spot. That’s basically it. You know, uh can’t try to do much more than that against a two times young winner and I got rewarded with an extra base hit a couple times. So that was it. Just try to keep things simple. You know, for this team to come back home after a disappointing series in Toronto with so many close games, this team clearly playing better. What’s your sense of just the progress you guys are making as a group? Oh yeah, we know we’re never out of it. Uh we’re fighting till the last out every single time. You know, the last trip in Toronto didn’t turn out our way, but we were in it right till the end every single game. And even today, you know, I even when guys make mistakes like I didn’t block that ball, the team picks me up and we get the win at the end anyways. You also had a, you know, behind the plate for You say Kikuchi in this game. I know that the line probably not ideal for him, but what did it look like from your perspective? Oh, just battling from the get- go. you know, he didn’t have his best stuff today, but was still able to go five innings and make sure the bullpen only had to cover four and not any more than that, especially for uh 13 games in a row and the first game of the series in a four- game series. Yeah, it’s a big one for sure, Travis. Well done. Congrats on the win. Thanks, man. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it, Terry. Mark, back to you guys. All right. Thanks, Trent. The Angels come away with the victory here at the Big A and win it by the final of six to five. Here are the winning totals tonight. The Angels had six runs on nine hits, commit one error, leave seven. For the Rangers, they had five runs on eight hits, no errors, and they leave seven. Kenley Jansen gets the win. He is two and two. Chris Martin ends up being the losing pitcher. His record is 0 and5 this year, although he’s that’s a little bit deceiving. He’s pitched very well for him. Really good RA. The time of the ball game was 2 hours 54 minutes and the attendance tonight here at the Big A 24,382. So with the victory, the Angels record now goes to 44 and 46 and the Rangers are 44 and 47. So the Angels leaprog Texas and move into third place. Let’s see if you can figure out the following baseball slang term. Today’s phrase is oppo taco. You know what it means? Oppo taco. Moments in baseball have been broadcast on the radio since 1921. Smith courts went into right down the line. It may go crazy folks. Go crazy. It’s a home run and the Cardinals have won the game by the three to two on a home run by the Wizards. The next unforgettable call on the MLB app and MLB.com. Uh give him credit. He uh he made the right call. Well, it was that’s a gutsy call there in that situation when it’s a real borderline pitch. No, it definitely is a a tight one, but that’s what it is all about. Being a major league umpire, man, you have got to be able to call it the way you see it. And that ball was off the outside part. It was not a strike, but it’s a close pitch. And that to me is Shaunell’s patience at the plate. But again, Renhifo, a big night for Renhifo here. He goes two for four and that big double to start that ninth inning off. Splits the gap. He was thinking three. I think if the score’s different, he probably tries it, but you cannot make that first out at third base. Reneifo peels stops at second base. You get a big strike out on Darno. And I was expecting Darnell Darno to either bunt or at least put the ball in play, try to move Reno was unable to do it. Evan Newman first at bat of the night. He steps up the home plate and able to deliver the base hit to get Renhifo to third base. And then the intentional walk to no to Zack Neto sets everything in motion. And it’s a walk-off walk win tonight. Yes, it was. And it was good to see the Angels put some runs on the board. That had been a bit of an issue certainly over the weekend in Toronto with the Angels getting swept in those three one-run ball games against the Blue Jays. Angels put a six spot on the board. Tonight had three different hitters have multi-hit ball games. Neto had a pair of hits for the Angels. mentioned Ren Heo and Travis Darno had a two-run homer, also an RBI double, a pair of hits for him. Now, tomorrow it’ll be Jose Soraniano against Nathan Igaldi. And on paper, that looks like another good pitching match up. One more thing on that at bat by Shauna. Sha was down in the count 0 and2 by the way and worked that walk. So, what a great at bat. But you’re right, another marquee matchup tomorrow night with Jose Soraniano on the mound. And we saw Jose Soraniano bounce back after a tough start where he gave up eight a careerhigh eight runs. Bounces right back and and throws a gem in Atlanta. So a really nice start by uh Sorano and we will see him tomorrow night. Nathan Evaldi, he’s always a difficult task for anybody’s offense. So it’s
