Minnesota Vikings Legend John Randle Surprises High School Football Coach | Fan Saga
i’m Ernest Briggs i’m a youth football coach with the Minnesota Vikings and I’m also the assistant offensive line coach here at SMB Co-op i played four years at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School just up the street in South Minneapolis i always tell people I was pretty good during my day that was a long time ago is what I tell a lot of people and then I got recruited to go play at the University of St thomas but I busted up my leg so I ended up becoming more of an educator after that and artist and actor i’ve always been a Vikings fan my my father you know grew up telling us that you know on Sundays we root for the Minnesota Vikings i tell everybody that my favorite year that sort of made me a big Vikings fan was the team in 1998 you know John Randall Randy Moss’s first year Chris Carter all of those great people Randall Cunningham but I always tell people I was like that watching Randy Moss do all the things that he was doing on the field during that year and watching John Randall run the defense and do amazing things was phenomenal are you kidding me miracle finish it’s a Minneapolis miracle the Minneapolis miracle was probably one of my favorite things i was actually working in a play the night that it was happening and we had gotten out about maybe a half an hour early and we went to a local Green Mill restaurant up the street and there was like the last maybe 3 or 4 minutes of the game i’ve coached football i’ve played football before you never really think it’s over until it’s over but I was watching the play develop and then I watched the throw get h happen and then Diggs catches it and I just screamed i leaped out leapt out of my seat and I just remember like running through the restaurant just celebrating with all of these random people cuz we were all Vikings fans and we were just having a blast because we just won uh I still think it’s one of the greatest Vikings memories I’ve ever had drive it’s the greatest team sport you need all 11 people on a team in football to be successful you need all 11 people going with one idea which is we’re going to go down the field and we’re going to score so I’m going to secure this block i’m going to make you know I’m going to try and get downfield and I’m going to try and make a block on a on a defensive back you need all 11 people thinking as one to go make something happen that’s kind of why I love it because what we’re always trying to do whenever we’re coaching is we’re trying to teach focus you’re trying to teach discipline and you’re trying to teach people to all be on the same page to go execute and do something you’re here for a reason right yes sir represent your community represent your state represent Indian country okay yes sir the Indigenous Bowl is an all-star bowl game it was played here in the Twin Cities at uh US Bank Stadium but they were pulling people in from Canada New Mexico all across the United States and they brought them in here just to have like a place all indigenous all indigenous players so that they can actually play against one another and showcase their talents to a lot of colleges and universities i was selected to actually coach in the Indigenous Bowl here in the Twin Cities twice as an offensive line coach as well as a defensive coordinator and uh it’s probably one of the highlights of my life if I’m being honest about it [Applause] [Music] anytime I’m coaching defensive linemen I like do you know who John Randall is and there and most kids that I coach nowadays don’t know who John Randall is so I I say go Google the name John Randall on YouTube and just pull up 10 minutes high motor guy who was undersized guy who out outplayed all of his talents and abilities that people would give him he was just giving you everything on every play and I was like those are the people that I want he’s also a guy who stress technique he was always working arm movements he was always working leg movements he was always trying to make himself better john Randall hands down my favorite defensive lineman and he’s the person that I always tell defensive linemen when I coach this is who you want to be like hey Wolfpack wolfpack hey how’s everybody doing good how’s everybody doing good how’s everybody doing good yeah it’s my pleasure on behalf of the Minnesota Vikings Pro Football Hall of Fame and the NFL to come out and tell you guys that we’re rooting for you that I want to give you a little support give you a little confidence but I think you already got that i think you already know what to do i’ve been in this position before but I see you guys looking around looking at your faces i can see the energy the power and you’re ready to go can we break it down on three for the whoop pack can we do that can we do that let’s get up here let’s do it Dad let’s break it down on three 1 2 3 and this right here this togetherness man you going to remember this for the rest of your life this right here your family for life you’re going to be somewhere you going to see them always going to come back the good times the bad times but this right here remember this is special ernest I got a little present for you oh Lord and we’re going to sign it right here in front of you ah cuz we’ve been hearing some some great things about you you talking about the Dline and and you know I played the Dline so I want to say to me you live and die with the Dline we are We are the group that sets the tempo no offense we know offensive linemen we’re we’re the guys you know the bread and butter it’s true so hey I want to say thank you for for carrying on this tradition for for keeping my name alive mhm cuz not many people still talk about old Johnny Randall but you do so I appreciate it hey appreciate you appreciate you much respect i love you and I mean it i appreciate that man much respect man much respect to you too keep going always don’t let nobody tell you you can’t do what you doing
