Between him, Blake Mitchell, and Ramon Ramirez, we’re eventually gonna have to make some really difficult decisions with the catching depth: Only one is going to be Salvy’s heir apparent, and the others are going to either be trade bait or get asked to switch positions.
I know this, though: If we trade Carter Jensen for ANYONE this year that doesn’t cover a significant hole at the MLB level or isn’t going to be here for a long period of time, that would be a massive mistake. I still think we should sell, because we have a long ways to go in the Wild Card standings before we can actually be considered viable contenders this season for one of those spots. If we trade him at all, I hope it’s for at least a talented rookie / recent or current Top 100 prospect, and preferably one that plays the outfield.
Idealistically, if you believe in Blake Mitchell’s potential and you send Seth Lugo and Jensen to the Cubs, that probably nets us Owen Caissie. That’s a good way to be transactional: You retool on the fly, you get a talented future piece for the core by pulling the trigger and giving up talent, and you improve our window of contention by decreasing the pressure on 2025 and refusing to desecrate the below-average farm system with a half-assed attempt at getting back to the playoffs; If you are JJ Picollo, you would then eye going for it in 2026 with a better offense and a farm substantially better with depth.
