MLB LIVE🔴 St. Louis Cardinals vs Washington Nationals – Jul 8, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

Welcome to St. Louis and Busushch Stadium, home of the Cardinals since 2006. We’ve got baseball on the show. It’s the Washington Nationals taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. And now, first pitch coming at you right after the break. for St. Louis Cardinals just about ready to go. And on the hill, Matthew Liberator. What do you got on him, Chris? Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. CJ Abrams leading things off, but takes a strike. Here comes the pitch. And that’s in there at the knees, but he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. Gets a piece there. will do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a miss. And he chases that one in the dirt and he beats him for the first out after the drop. Third strike. That’s that classic wipeout slider below the zone right there. Just nasty. Looks like a fast ball thigh high that you got to protect the zone and then it’s just that late break that fools you and kind of makes you look silly. And now James Wood. Swung on. Belted. That one back there. And it’s out of here. He circles the bases. His 24th home run of the season. And they grab the lead. It’s one- nothing. First pitch hacking. And it paid off for him in a big way. Now Boo, clearly some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean, that ball was so close to going foul. Would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. Did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Luis Garcia at the plate now. That’s ball one. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. One out. Base is empty. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Two balls, one strike. Slider misses outside. Last couple of pitches, breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. One down, base is empty. out to short on the run. Throw to first. Nicely done for the out as we take a look at the Nationals lineup. A guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus. Nathaniel Low. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Nathaniel Low at the plate with two away swings through that one. He’s a master at hitting fast balls. You need to be careful with location if you’re going to throw them. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Right back to him on the mound and that is the inning. Nats on the board first courtesy of this solo homer. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here in St. Louis now, the starting pitcher in this one, Mitchell Parker. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game and you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s gotten this one. Let’s go. He had a foul ball late on that fast ball. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you can get hurt. Two balls, two strikes. And that one upstairs. That one misses. So a lead off walk. Oh, a breaking ball in that 32 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Mason win. Next up for the Cardinals. That catches the corner. Oh, and one swinging a foul straight back. That one is upstairs. Pretty standard high 02 fast ball right there. If you’re smart, you’ll look for something down in the zone, but not too far. Don’t want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt. Two- two on the way. Bows that off to the left and will do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. And that’s the first out. Well, that split caught a lot of the zone. Definitely a hitable pitch, but coming off the fast ball, the pitch before, it’s kind of tough to recognize. You notice there’s something different about it. He threw it with the same arm action, same release point, and he left it up. But the movement and the change of speeds, that was enough to do the job. And up to hit is Wilson Contrarus. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And there’s a curve through for a strike. That one found hard the other way. Donovan at first. One gone. That one off the mark. The countdown two and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Just dropped it in there on the top of the strike zone. Certainly not what he was trying to do with that curveball by any means, but at the plate You could tell he wasn’t expecting it either. I’d say he got away with a big time hanger on that one. Alec Burlson now at the plate. Come on, Alec. Come on. First offering and it just misses. Fast for a strike. The other way and it stays fair. coming home. The relay to the plate. He will score. It’s 1-1. Well, we’re starting over again. All tied up. Takes an inside pitch and just lays it over there to left field. And that’s all he had to do is gets up to the outfield grass to push that run across. Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals there. There’s the strike. 01’s the count. Rudder at second. Two down. That’s down and in. One ball, two strikes to count. and foul ball. Man on second, two down. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Wood should have this one. And that’s the inning. Cards on the board with this double. All even now at 1-1. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Top of the second and now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. Josh Bell. Matthew. Ball one there. Liberator a 64 lefty. He features a four seam fast, a slider, a sinker, a cutter, and he occasionally uses a curve right through there for a strike. Patrick Johnson calling the balls and strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson. Sometimes he might get a little jumpy, a little excited and expand the zone, but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it. And that’s important because you got to make players earn it. And that’s in for a strike. Singy, what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters? I’d say off the plate, away, and down, and why those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubous where they had pictures of all four umpires, nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Next offering is in for a strike. Tied up here in the early going. And that misses and it’s two and one. And it’s fouled away. Gets a piece and stays alive. And it remains two and two. One down. Base is empty. Off the plate. Full countdown. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. And he walked him. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. man at first and the batter now Dalon Lyall. Pitch misses. One and0 to first. Might be two. There’s one return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Down to the bottom of the second. All tied 1-1. Back here at Bush Stadium. Bottom of the second. Now the left fielder Lars Newbar. Lars Nar. Fast ball for a strike. Oh, and one. Swings through that one for strike two. No balls. Two strikes. Got him swinging. Fatty seven. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Nolan Gorman. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. One’s the count. Fast ball is outside. The 1-1 is fouled off. That’s bolted. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. And a swing and a miss. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball. And I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. Pedro Pah next up for the Cardinals. Foul ball. Get out of here. And that one fouled off. Foul ball still 0 and two. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Hit in the air left field and it falls and that keeps the inning alive. Batting ninth center fielder. And now Victor Scott this guy’s just a tremendously talented center fielder. Gold glove caliber type out there. Offensively he can do some things but you know also has some streakiness as well. I think the key just trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out. You know he saves runs in the outfield. So that’s going to buy him more time to work things out at the dish. First pitch just misses on the ground right side. They get the force. That’s the third out. Inning over. So no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. End of two here at Bush Stadium. All tied 1-1. Top half of the third inning. Here’s the catcher. Kar Ruiz. Liberator back to work. popped up foul territory behind the plate and there’s one down. Batting night, center fielder Jacob Young. Jacob Young digging in for the Nationals. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. All right, ball one. No strikes. Fast ball is outside. Next pitch in for a strike and it’s two and one. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two away. Now that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. 0 for one so far. And first offering is fouled off. Two out. Space is empty. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. This guy’s pounding the zone. Hitters don’t have time to think in between pitches. A short stop takes the ball. Foul ball still a one and two count. Two down to two balls, two strikes. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the atbat. I’m sure there’s some times where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven. And he got him. Strike three and that’ll retire to side. Three up, three down for Washington. Score remains tied 1-1. Ready to go for the last half of the inning at the plate. Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. That one clips the outside corner. That’s strike one. Lifted in the air out to left and out number one on the grab. Now batting the short and stepping in for the Cardinals, Mason Win struck out swinging his first time. And there’s the strike. Next offering is fouled back. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. One down, base is empty. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. Not close with that one. Now one and two. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Let’s go St. Louis. Come on St. Louis. Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headtohead. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch, even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Two two. Fights it off. He’ll see another stays alive. About to see the 11th pitch of the bat here. can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. Oh, that was perfect execution of that curve ball down and in. He gets it out of the danger zone. And you really can’t do it much better than that. It’s in the zone the entire way, so you have to swing as a hitter, but then just falls off the table and almost hits you in the back foot. Here’s Contrarus now. Struck out looking at his first at bat. Fast for a strike. Two outs. And a foul ball. right side. Garcia tosses to first and Contrarus is retired and that is the inning. Nothing doing there for St. Louis. Still tied 1-1. And we’re back now. The number two hitter James Wood. James Wood. You can do it. You can do it. This one ripped but foul to the right. Well, these Nats just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to. 0 and two now. That one missed. Two straight. Nope. That’s off the plate. Ball two. Chopper right side over to first out on a bang bang play but he made it close and now it’s Luis Garcia grounded out his first time off That one inside. Ball one. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. That’s towards center. And there are two outs. Nathaniel Low up to hit. Now that’s smacked to right center and a base hit. And they have their first hit since the first inning. Now batting the first baseman, Josh Bell. Josh Bell at the plate now. Come on. Fast call for a strike. Go and one. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Low off of first with two away. Just missed. I got one ball, one strike. just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. So that’s two straight two out hits. Backto- back singles. He wasn’t able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time, good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield. Now here is Brady House worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. That one down the line and it goes just foul. First and second, two down. And there’s a ball. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. And that one fouled off. Two on, two outs. Spoils a two- strike pitch. He’ll see another missed inside with the curb. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Still two and two after the foul ball. Two outs. Tulo and it’s ball three. Dalen Lyle in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here in there. Got him looking and that one split the plate. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the right fielder, Alec Burlson. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. They try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head inside. And that is ball one. You know, these Cardinals doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. He’s only giving up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there, and that might be the best news yet for this offense. That one finds the zone, and it’s two and one now. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. Swing and a miss. Two and two now. And a foul ball. He stays alive. He’s been pitching well, but going through this middle of the order second time through, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are being made. swing and a miss struck him out. So he picks up his six strike out of the ball game. Just couldn’t catch up on the low 90s fast ball right there. And that’s a result of a good job of changing speeds. Off speed pitch on the one before then sped him up. Pitchers that don’t throw real hard have to rely on location and mixing up the speeds. That wasn’t the best location with the fast ball, but clearly that wasn’t the pitch he was looking for at the plate either. Next to hit, Thomas Sajay-Z1’s the count. Next offering is fouled back. whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That ball’s carrying and gone. And the Cardinals have the lead now. It’s 2-1. I’m sure he wanted that pitch down below the zone. It stayed up a little bit. He paid a deer price for it. Just a great swing to the ball, through the ball, and a nice round triple. So, one out, nobody on. Now for St. Louis, Lars Newbar. And first offering is fouled off. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. He swings and fouls one off. to the right side. Garcia gets it to first and that is out number two. Now batting second base Nolan Gorman. And up next for St. Louis, Nolan Gorman. His first at bat was a strikeout. That one a little bit high. And that’s ball one. Outside corner. There’s the strike. Next pitch downstairs now. Two balls in a strike. just missed. And that one hammered and that’s a foul ball. swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Draws the walk there. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. It’s been a little bit of a shaky inning, but he’s still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs. He’s just got to turn the page and go after this next guy. Line drive and this might be trouble. Coming home and he’s out. Knock down. And that ends the inning. Always exciting to see a play at the plate. Trying to score with two outs, but the tag just gets him in time. And they cut down the run to end the inning. All set for the start of the inning. Digging in, it’s the speedy outfielder Dalon Lyle in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. You know, these Nationals as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for them to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Next offering misses and the count even one and one. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. chases that one out of the zone. Now, five strikeouts for him on the mound. You know, Boo, you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement, but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement, and that’s what we saw right there. Good drop on the break and got him to swing over the top. And now it’s Keert Ruiz. He popped out his first time. There’s the strike. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. The Red Birds up by a run and we’re in the top of the fifth. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. And that one is inside. Two balls, one strike. That’s down and in. In the air, right side. Burlson makes the catch. Two down. Up next for the Nationals, center fielder Jacob Young. So up next, Jacob Young. He’s 0 for one. Young goes 5′ 11 in 25 years old and he was drafted in the seventh round in 2021. Tries to hold up. Appeal to first. No swing. Two down to swinging a foul straight back and that is out of play. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Fights that one away. Still one and two. swing and a miss. Handcuffed him with that slider and it’s a three up, three down inning. Nationals go quietly. They’re down two to one. Back here in St. Louis, we head to the bottom of the fifth. And now Victor Scott. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. Activity in the bullpen for the Nationals. Jose A. Ferrer. The lefty looks to be getting himself ready. Soka the right-hander also getting loose. Next offering is in for a strike. Good eye in that spot. That one just misses. Three and two now. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. Now this is in the air down the line. Wood on the move and it’s caught for the out. Outstanding catch right there. And I love the commitment that he showed. He knew that the wall was close, but was determined to make that catch. And a nice calculation of just how much room he had to try to minimize that contact. And that one is lifted in the air. Young sizing this one up. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Now batting the two down base is empty. Mason win next up for the Cardinals who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Foul ball there. The 1-1. The shorts stop takes the ball. Two down, nobody on. Last half of inning number five. Way out front for strike two. Man, that’s just a nasty splitter. bottom falls out of it. You don’t see a lot of guys throw that these days, but I tell you what, he’s got a good one. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. He’s got it. And that is out number three. Back here at Bush Stadium. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, CJ Abrams. Let’s go. Come on. Let’s go. Liberator back to work. There’s the strike. Yeah, a slider misses down and away. The guy at the plate could recognize slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch on the ground out to short win. Now one gone in the top of the six. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. So digging in James Wood. He’s already homered here in this one. There’s the strike. Little bit low. The Cardinals leading by a run. And we’re the top half of the sixth. In there at the knees and the count one and two. This guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. On the ground right side. Gorman slings to first. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Now batting second base Luis Garcia will hit next. Bowl for two in this one. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office even for the skippers. Seeing the offense just sputter, not able to get anything going. Swing and a miss as he was late. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just going to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. Ball one action in the St. Louis bullpen. Jojo Romero. The southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in. Ley warming up as well. inside. Just missed. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Nathaniel Low in the on deck circle for the Nets. Slice the other way. That’s a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. A late jump and I think that was the difference on the playbook. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. Low. Here’s Nathaniel Low. One for two. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. But with the tying run at first base, he’s looking for something he can get a lot of barrel on. drive it into a gap and score that run from first base. Garcia leads off first with two down to the inning. Step off throw to first. Garcia dives back in safely. I think you want to get a one-way lead. Be very aggressive in the secondary. This hitter, not a power guy, so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps score a ball in the gap. And a base hit. And now first and second with two outs. Man, those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. Here’s Josh Bell out in front with the swing. And that is strike one. up the middle. Gorman, they take the force out. They don’t come much closer than that. Bang bang play to end the inning. No runs on two hits, no errors, and two men left stranded. Hard of the order 345 coming up. It’s the Cardinals two and the Nats one. Back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Mike Sroa and we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy man and one of the better ones in the game I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Contras. Contras in now takes ball one off the plate. You know, these cards really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They really made that opposing starter work in this one. Ran his pitch count up and now they’ve got an opportunity to continue making things difficult on the bullpen. Next offering is downstairs. And no, they haven’t broken through in a big way in the runs column, but with the way they’re grinding out at bats, it definitely feels like there’s potential for more coming. And there’s the automatic. right through there for a strike. Full count. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the fourth count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. So, a man aboard and next is the Cardinals four hitter, Alec Burlson. and that’s off the inside edge and it’s one and0. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Jose A. Ferrer, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Next offering is down low. Had a breaking ball misses outside. Runner at first with no outs here. Highf fly ball right field. Lyle under it fakes the grab. One down. Now batting third baseman Thomas Saj. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Thomas Sajay-Z. He’s already homered in this game. Let’s keep it going. And no strikes. Slider right there. One and one. One- run game. One out, one on. Next pitch is inside and it’s two and one. Late swing fouled off. Helpful. swings through that one. It’s a strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Now up for St. Louis, Lars Nbar. That one in there across the letters. Next one misses and it’s a ball and a strike. And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. So, one left for the Cardinals. They lead it 2-1. Now, pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Kyle Lady. These are the spots where Levers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. Brady House digging in for the Nationals. A strike out and a walk. That’s a slider for a strike, man. 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a lowend fast ball for some pitchers. Looking to get the tying run on base. Fouled off down the right side. This one smacked out to left center. Dives for it. Got it. Makes the play. That diving catch right there is the kind of play that just fires up the team. Whether it’s to make more great defensive plays or to get back in the dugout and swing the sticks. Dalon Lyall digging in for the Nationals. Come on now. Let’s go. Fun off foul. Trying to keep good speed off the bases. Next offering is fouled back. That one just misses. Really good two- strike pitch right there. Surprised he was able to spit on that thing. Ground ball left side, slinging it to first in time. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. And it’s the catcher for the Nationals, Kar Ruiz at 96. That pitch is in for a strike on the ground right side. Gorman throws on to first. That’s out number three. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left midway in inning number seven, and it’s time to stretch. It’s the Cardinals two and the Nats won. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Jose A. Ferrer. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Well, one-run game digging in. Nolan Gorman is struck out and he is walked. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Just off the inside edge. Next pitch is downstairs. And that drops in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with swag and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Missed with a change up and a full countdown. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Now batting catcher Pedro. And up next for St. Louis, Pedro Pah. First pitch doesn’t find a zone. Counts one and0 late with the swing there. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Grounded to third. Could be two. Fires to second for one. Puts the tag on him and it’s a double play. Now batting center fielder Victor Scott the second. So two down now. And here is Victor Scott. A change up missing. One and0. Fouled off left side. And that’s a little high. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Late swing, fouled to the left. That one lined in left field. That’s base hit. So now back to the top of the order. Oh yeah. Now here’s the Cardinal DH Brendan Donovan. Brendan Donovan. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Scott the runner at first with two gone. St. Louis just missed. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Two outs. That’s outside and it’s two and one. St. Louis. There’s a high chopper and that one handled to first. Inning over. So, no runs on two hits, no errors, and one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Cardinals two and the Nats won. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Jojo Romero. He doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers, so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing the work behind him. They’ll have to be on their toes with him on the bump. Jacob Young digs in centerielder Jacob Young. That’s off the mark. Ball one. Move into the bullpen for the Cardinals. Ryan Hley, the closer, is getting ready and perhaps looking at a long save opportunity here. Gray getting cranked up as well. Swings over the top of that one. I got one ball, one strike. Swing and a miss and a count. One and two. Two. Battling here as he fouls it away. The one two out of the ground to third. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Saved it to first without a throw. Let’s see how they roll this one. Always feels amazing getting a job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Abs in the box now. Takes strike one. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get in the scoring position. Snap throw to first and he’s back in safely, holding on to a one-run lead. And we’re in the top of the eighth with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Gets a piece and stays alive. field two hit on the ground might be two to second. That’s none. And that is a rally killer. Two gone in the eight. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. And here is James Wood. First pitch. And that’s in for a strike. base hit center field. So the tying run reaches with two away. Now batting second. You often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. And now here is Luis Garcia and that one fouled off. Lefty continues to work, but the closer getting loose in the bullpen. Runner on the move. Pitch is low. Throw to second. Great jump. And that is a stolen base. It wasn’t even close. And the tying run is now in scoring position. So the tying run at second. Ruer goes again. Throw to third. Wow. And that will end the inning. When you get thrown out at third with two outs, you kind of want to keep on running. Not a great decision there as it ends the inning. Now pitching for the now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Cole Henry that game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. Well, one-run game. Here’s the short stop at the plate. Mason win 0 for three in this one. First pitch misses. Henry in his rookie season. He features a fourseam fast ball, a curb, a change up, and he works in a slider and a popup right side foul territory. Bell makes a nice running catch. Now batting first baseman Wilson Contreras. Here comes Wilson Contrus. Just missed activity in the Washington bullpen. Andrew Chaffen looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez. Bases empty, one away here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. gets the outside corner with that one. Line to second. Snagged on the bounce and Contras is retired. Now batting right fielder Alec Berles. Two outs, base is empty and next will be the cleanup hitter Alec Burlson. That one finds the zone. Strike one ball outside with a breaking ball. swaming a drive deep right field. That’s back there. That’s not coming back. His 12th of the season. It’s 3-1. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spit on some other pitches in this bag. Was very patient and it paid off. So two away with nobody on Thomas Sajay-Z next up for the Cardinals. Swinging a miss. That’s strike one. Oh and one. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Next pitch is inside. Going to count one and two and downstairs right side makes the grab and that’s the inning. St. Louis tacks on one with a homer. Last chance coming up here for the Nationals. We’re back. And on the mound is the closer Ryan Hley. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Ryan stepping in, Luis Garcia, one for three Washington. Second base, Luis Garcia. That’s in there. And that’s strike one. way inside. ripped to first. That at that is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. You hit the ball hard, but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. Nathaniel Low getting ready to hit. Pitch is in there. 41. Well, so many hard throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. That one missed. The Nationals trailing by two here in the top of the ninth. One down. Base is empty. Fouls it off. Still one and two. And there’s a ball. Ripped to third and caught. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. Well, I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact, and that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Last chance for the Nats in this one. Josh Bell now at the plate. And that’s in for a strike. And it’s 0 and one. Two down to swinging a foul out of play. Helley is just one strike away. Got him. And that’s the ball game. 3-1 ball game. Quick game. We were looking for a little bit more. It seemed at points the offenses were going to break out, but a total of four runs combined. Really good pitching and defense on both sides. Just a couple of key swings making all the difference. And your final 3-1 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon. Double move.
