MLB LIVE🔴 Cincinnati Reds vs Miami Marlins – Jul 8, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO
and welcome into the ballpark. Happy to have you with us. MLB the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the Miami Marlins going up against the Cincinnati Reds. John Shambi alongside Chris Singleton. Well, Singy, when you consider the top hitters ballparks in the sport, this has got to be one of them. I’ll say this, pitchers have to stay with their game. They can’t look over their shoulder and think, “I have to be fine and perfect on every pitch.” Continue to pitch to your strengths and you’ll come out of here with a good outing. All right, we’ll be back to get this one started after this. Just about ready to go and getting the start for Cincinnati. Graham Ashcraft, Chris, he’s got the ability to take control of a game when he’s out there. Well, incredible mound presence and he’s going to attack hitters. You look at that strikeout per nine ratio over 10 coming into this start. So, he’s a pitcher that wants the ball. He’s aggressive. He knows that he can get the swing and miss, especially when he needs it most. We’ll see how effective he is in this one. All right, ready to get underway. And now for the Marlins, Xavier Edwards. And that’s through their first strike. And we are underway. Mlan tosses to first. One up, one down. And time now for the Marlins lineup. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, Boo. And that can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now. And that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Jesus Sanchez stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. One down, base is empty. In the air, right field, pretty well struck, ranging back, tattooed, and gone. It’s his eighth home run of the year. And that gives him a lead. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Sometimes too much velocity will cause a pitcher to throw through the sink and that means that there’s more force seam action than there is sink and that can turn into a really good pitch to hit. Well, we saw it right there. Didn’t miss a stitch on that baseball. He’s got himself a home run. And here is Otto Lopez strike on the inside corner. Ashcraft, a righty that throws with power, 27 years old, and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2019. Next offering is fouled back. One out. Base is empty. One ball, two strikes. The short stop takes a ball. Got it. Swinging. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. Two down, base is empty. And here’s the rookie catcher, Augustine Ramirez. just off the outside edge and it’s one and0. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Two down, domin. And there’s a ball. Three and0. And he gets that fast ball by him upstairs. You got to remember to take the donut off the bat, partner. 3-1 and he couldn’t come up with it. It’s been a little bit of a shaky inning, but he’s still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs. He’s just got to turn the page and go after this next guy. Now a chance for Kyle Sters. That’s the ball. Breaking ball inside. One and0. That one fouled off. Two outs. Swings through him for the K. Pulled the string on the change up. One for the Marlins on the solo shot. It’s now one- nothing. Back here at Great American Ballpark and on the mound in this one, Edward Cabrera. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So, it just shows you how effective he’s been. and he’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. And now for the Reds, TJ Freel, short hop liner, handled it short, the throw, and very nicely done for the out. Batting second. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. Looks like this group was shut out their last game. So, we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored and you want to get off to a great start. Score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Matt Mlan in now takes ball one off the plate. And that’s way high. Two and 0. Two balls, no strikes. And it’s foul away. This to third. Zips it to first. And two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight. Short stop. Ellie de la Cruz. Two outs. Base is empty. Ellie de la Cruz. The next to hit for the Reds. Pitch is in there. And that’s strike one. just missed. And now the count one and two after the swing in the miss. Wow, that’s 89 on the gun. And it’s a change up. It’s like good hitting if you’re looking for it, but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch, really hard for a hitter to get on time with it. That one just missing inside. And the count is even two and two. Ground ball left side and it goes just foul. Two out. Space is empty. Battling here as he fouls it away. On the ground right side and foul ball. swings and miss has struck him out. Reds go down quietly and it remains one- nothing. Second inning set to go and at the plate for Miami, Eric Wagam. looking good. Cincinnati. Ashcraft back to work. Back to right. Fair ball around first. Digging for two. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Batting seventh, left fielder Hernandez. Ariberto Hernandez the next up for the Marlins. And that one’s a little bit low. And that’s ball one. Let’s get it together. You can do it. Come on. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Time to check on our umpires. Earl Hendricks calling balls and strikes. Yeah, well-liked umpire Boo. Pretty consistent with his zone. So, if you’re familiar with him and how he works, you won’t get too surprised by anything. Sometimes they’ll give a little bit off the corner, but nothing too crazy at all. Man at second. Fought off foul. Fans don’t really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires. I mean, you see them a lot. Yeah, but they’re all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level. So when you respect that, I think over time you can develop a relationship with them. As the game has moved along, we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires. I’ve been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four guys nicknames, hometowns, and as well hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the umpire a little bit. That’s great. Now the third baseman Connor Norby base knock center field headed for the plate now. A long throw home. He’ll score easily and they lead by two. Well done. drives in the run. Pretty good spot hard and inside, but that’s a perfect example of keeping your hands inside the ball tight to the body. The ability to take that back up the middle shows his approach is to use the entire field. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And that one handled one at second. And that’s two. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Ready to go for the last half of the unit. And now it’s Austin Hayes. Austin Hayes. Foul ball there. very dominant with that fast ball inside. Hitters going to be conscious of that. Now you have the outer half of the plate to work with out there on the mound. The next pitch misses and the count is one and one. One in the air pretty deep out to center field. Meyers moving under this one and it’s caught for the out. Batting fifth left fielder. Now it’s Gavin Lux. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And that’s downstairs and outside. He doubled up on the off speed there. We talk about the power fast ball, but he’s working a little differently here. And another ball at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Swinging a high-fly ball out there towards left field, reaching for it, makes the catch. Got to love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Two down, base is empty. And the batter now, Spencer Steer, swing, and a miss. Just a bit tardy there. Not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed. This to center field. Meyers makes his way towards it. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that’s the inning. So no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Marlins two and the Reds nothing back here in Cincinnati. All set for the start of the inning. And now here is Xavier Edwards. That’s in for a strike. Nasty pitch. And that’s in there for a strike. And quickly nothing at two. 02 count. Both pitches on the inside part of the plate. Hitter is thinking, I don’t want to get beat here. This is a good time for something off speed away. And that’s in the dirt. One and two. And it’s even up. ball. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Let’s go. Come on. And a ground ball to first and one away in the top of the third. Now batting right fielder Jesus Sanchez. Jesus Sanchez the next up for the Marlins. He’s already homered in this game. Center field. Fredel under it. He’s got it. Two away. Now batting shortstop Otto Lopez. And up next for Miami, Otto Lopez 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. You can do it. And first offering is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. Strike two. Great velocity in 97 at the top of the zone. Two strikes outside low. It’s a ball in two strikes. ripped on a line and that’s the third out and the Marlins down quietly but they hold a two nothing lead set for the bottom of the third and now the catcher comes up to him Tyler Stevenson Stevenson swing and a miss. There’s that change up. Zero balls, one strike. Up the middle and that chance handled. Got him on the offbalance throw. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Eight right fielder Will Benson. Next for Cincinnati, Will Benson. And another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds. They’re looking for one. 20 change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. Check swing on the 2-1 appeal to third. No swing. He held up. Clyde Washington with the call there and he walked him and that’s their first base runner of the game. Looked like a questionable call in that spot. He even seemed a little surprised it went his way, but as a hitter, you’ll take that all day. Christian and Carnosion Strand digs in down. That’s in there. That’s strike one. Good approach right there. You want to get something just a little higher that you can elevate. Stay out of that double play. Here goes the runner. That’s in for a strike. Throw to second. Wow. Outstanding job behind the dish to catch him right there trying to steal. Really quick catch and throw. Set up with great footwork, man. He popped out of that crouch, threw a laser down to second base. Nice job. That’s the third Norby. handles, throws to first, and that will end the inning. Nobody left for Cincinnati, and they’re down two nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And here’s the catcher, Christine Ramirez. And first offering is fouled off. Come on. Base knock right field. Man aboard on the leadoff single. And now here’s the Marlins DH. Kyle Sters struck out swinging his first time and a foul ball. Sters measures 6’2 in 215 lbs and they went out and made a trade for him last season. Let’s go Cincinnati. And it’s quickly nothing and two. The designated hitter and that one hit 97 on the gun. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Up next. And now the first base, Eric Wagam. One for one with a double and a run scored. That one’s in there and it’s 0 and one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Nick Martinez up and throwing for Terry Francona. Santion, a hard throwing right-hander up as well. And now the count is even. on the ground is short. Could be two. There’s one. And their second double play of the day will end the fourth. One hit in the inning, but no one left. And midway in the fourth, it’s the Marlins two and the Reds nothing. And we’re back. John Chami and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, TJ Freedom. Yeah. Breaking ball drops in for a strike. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Rolls across the diamond and one gone in the fourth as they get the lead off. Man, now batting second baseman Matt Mlan. Matt Mlan the next to hit for the Reds. Grounded out his first time. and a swing a miss. Gully’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. And here it comes. That one’s in there. That is strike two. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. And a swing and a miss. And there’s two away. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop. Ellie Dea Cruz. The shorts stop takes a ball. One ball. No strikes. Two outs. Now one to one. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. That’s the ball. And a big swing and a miss. Two-2 and it remains two and two. Two down. Nobody on. Right through there. Got him. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Reds go down quietly. They trail things here. Two nothing. Now pitching. They go with one of their more experienced arms in this spot, Nick Martinez. He’s pitching on two days rest. And now for the Marlins. Ariberto Hernandez fly to left his first time. Right through there for a strike. Next offering upstairs. swings through that one. One and two is the count. Breaking ball misses down and away. Two two. Here’s a 22. swing and a line drive and a base hit up the middle. Just kind of sliced that one into center. Now batting third baseman Connor Norby. So up next, Connor Norby RBI single. His last time up just missed. Next offering popped in the air right field. Benson makes the grab and there’s one away. Now batting center fielder Dane Meyers. Dane Meyers the next to hit and that gets the inside corner for a strike. That one finds the zone. That’s strike two. And the pitch is outside. Ball one. Next pitch is outside. That one missed. Man at first. One away. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another payoff pitch and ball forward to a board. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. He’s grounded out a couple of times. And that one fouled off. Runners at first and second with one gone. And we’re in the top of the fifth and a foul ball. Two on, one out. Got him looking. That was pretty nasty. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure, hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely, but you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after it. And at the plate for Miami, Jesus Sanchez, wide drive, nabs it, and that is that. Two left on home half of the fifth. Coming up, it’s the Marlins two and the Reds nothing back here at Great American Ballpark. And now the DH, Austin Hayes. Austin Hayes Cabrera back to work. That’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Well, these Reds just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point, and it’s not exactly early anymore. They have guys in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. Calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting left fielder Gavin Lux and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Gavin Lux fly to left his first time. And that’s in there at the knees. The Reds hitless so far in the game on the ground right side and that’s just foul. Missed with a change up and it’s one and two. The Fish leading by two. Last half of inning number five. waves at the bender for the strike out. Chris, as we look back at the pitch sequence, he hadn’t seen that curveball at all. How tough is it to adjust to something like that with a bunch of break when you haven’t had a look at it yet? Yeah, I mean, you’re dialed up for something firm. You never want to take a called third strike as a fast ball. So, you’re going to be a little anxious before you recognize the pitch. right there. Clearly didn’t see what was coming. That one down the line and it goes just foul, two outs, and that one fouled off. Oh, he’s got to be pretty proud of this outing so far. Sometimes guys cower coming into a ballpark like this, but he has attacked hitters. Pitching on the road like this is very impressive. This has been a treat to watch. In the air out towards left center and makes the play and that’s out number three. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six. Now it’s the shortstop. Otto Lopez upstairs. And that’s ball one. You know, these Marlins digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already. And even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s almost always going to lead to positive results. In plenty of time to first now one gone in the top of the six. Here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami, Augustine Ramirez. A walk and he’s also singled. started after it. Appeal to first. That’s a swing according to umpire Woody Keller. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. Next offering misses down and away. The one-1 is fouled off. One down, base is empty. And that’s outside. That’s a ball and right back to the mound to first. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Now batting the designated hitter, Kyle Sters. Kyle Sters the next up for the Marlins who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. There’s a strike up high going one. That one missing inside. And a swing to miss. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside. Effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. Cut out and miss. Struck him out. Marlins set down in order. No runs, no hits, no errors. 789 do up in the home half of the inning. It’s the Marlins two and the Reds nothing. Well, we go bottom six at the plate. Tyler Stevenson. Tyler Stevenson inside. Ball one. That’s a ball. That one hit at the knees for a strike in the air center field. Meyers hauls it in and there’s one away. Now batting right fielder will in now for the Reds. Will Benson walked his first time. drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That’s back and it bangs off the out of town scoreboard. He’s in at second with a one out double. Well, there goes the dream of the no hitter. Just missed out on a home run right there, but he certainly hit it hard enough. Just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall, but still an excellent swing of the bat. One out, runner at second. Here’s the third base, Christian. He’s over for one, but he’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can. Runner takes off for third. Pitch in for a strike, the throw, tag, and he’s out. Well, I can see he had a big lead out there at second base, so it wasn’t a shock when he took off. But trying to steal third right there, it’s kind of risky, man. You’re already in scoring position, so you got to make sure that you can make it there safely. That wasn’t the case. Swinging a ground ball down the line and it’s fouled. Pretty frugal guy. He is very efficient with the pitch count in this one. Two down, nobody on and that skips in the dirt. Well, as good as things can be, it can be a tough day at the office even for the skippers seeing the offense just sputter. Not able to get anything going. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. Yeah, that’s a little high. Just not taking the bait right there. But a good pitch with two strikes. Chopped to third. Norby tosses to first. That’s out number three. Nobody left for Cincinnati. They’re still down. It’s two zip. Here’s a new pitcher from the pen. Tony Santion number 64. He has a great slider with tons of movement. And here’s the first base, Eric Wagam. One for two. Santion in his third season. He features a four seam fast, a slider, and he works in a change up. The Cincinnati bullpen has some movement. Brent Sudter, the veteran southpaw, is getting ready to come on if needed. Pitch misses. Two balls, no strikes. Two and0. And another ball. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. That one misses. So a leadoff walk. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat. left fieldielder Hernandez. The next up for the Marlins. Let’s go. Come on. Way high there. And it’s one and0. to the left side, but it is well fouled. Wagamin gets his lead at first with nobody out and that is out of play. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched. Two and two. Sit him down. And the two- two just off the outside edge. This is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game. You know that they don’t want to walk you. So, you’re going to get a pitch to hit. You just better not miss it. Went back to the fast and it was effective. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Conor Norby the next up for the Marlins. Norby having a lot more success on the road this season. in there and it’s on one, man. I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. That’s a ball. One ball, one strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next offering is downstairs. Breaking ball misses down and away. and ball four to a board. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. You can do it and fouled off. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. And strike two. Outside low and the count one and two. They tried to get him to go chase the pitch down and away, but he wouldn’t bite. Next offering is down low. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Next offering way upstairs. Two walks in the inning already and he just doesn’t seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them. Xavier Edwards waits on deck for Miami. Goes down looking. just locked him up right there for the second out. And that’s an at bat he’s probably going to be thinking about for a little while. Didn’t pull the trigger. Not how you want to go down in an RBI spot. So now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up. Now Xavier Edwards 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout. And the first pitch misses for ball one. One and0. Two on, two outs. And now two and nothing. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Two on, two outs. There’s the strike. and a swing and a miss. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, this guy competes hard. We see the emotion there. I love it. Great job of getting out of the jam. back here in Cincinnati. And now the center fielder TJ Fredel on the outside corner 1-1. It’s just been an impressive outing so far. Continues to pound the zone pitch after pitch and he’s been able to stay down. That’s what’s been key. The other way. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Up next for the Reds. Second baseman Matt Mlan. Now at the plate, Matt Mlan for two in this one. Well, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Swings through that quickly in an 02 count. You got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in place somewhere. Then you got a chance. Next offering upstairs, the Reds down by a pair here in the bottom of the seven and a ball even the count. Two and two. All right, Red. fights it off. He’ll see another two now. Good eye in that spot. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter. Yeah, he’s been very frugal today. Economical with the pitch count. Ellie Dea Cruz now at the plate. And that’s a little bit high. And that is ball one. Two outs. Fouled off to the right. Breaking ball misses down and away. Two balls, one strike. That one the other way and foul ball. Here’s the 2-2. Strike three. Struck him out for the third time today. Another scoreless inning. And now that’s seven shut out frames. It’s the Marlins two and the Reds nothing. Now pitching. A new arm out of the bullpen for the Reds. Scott Barlo. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. And now for the Marlins Jesus Sanchez. He’s already homered here in this one and first offering is fouled off. They say one. No ball. Two strikes. There’s a swing and a drive. Going back. Won’t get to this one. It drops. Foul. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Let’s go. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. Ball. That’s in. Up the middle. And that one handled. Fires over to first. He made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat. Up next for the Marlins, shortstop, Otto Lopez. Otto Lopez the next up for the Marlins. 0 for three in this one. Come on. And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. Not close with that one. Now 2 and 0. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Next pitch is downstairs. Yeah, there’s ball four. So that’s ball four. Runner, take your base. Close pitch there. But you got to forget about that call if you’re out on the mound. You can’t let it affect you going forward. You got to get out of the inning first. And then if you want to be frustrated, take it out in the dugout. Ramirez. The next to hit takes ball one. One ball. No strikes. In there at the knees. One-on-one. There’s a one-1 way out front for strike two. All sliders so far in this at bat to get ahead in the count. and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box. Swing and a highf fly ball down the right field line. Benson makes the grab and there’s two away. Kyle getting ready. runner on the move. Pitch in for a strike and safe. It’s a stolen base. Next offering is fouled back. And they’ll do it again. Let’s go. Swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field and that’ll do it. Marlins leave one. They’re up two nothing. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Anthony Bender. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Austin digs in now. faded hitter Austin Hayes in the zone for a strike. That was the sweeper. It’s been tough for the offense so far, but you can’t get frustrated. You got to find a way to shake it off. Go up there and relax. That’s the only way you’re going to be able to put runs up on the board. and he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes now. Betting Gavin L the next to him for the Reds. swing and a base hit and that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. First pitch swing in went up there with a plan to be aggressive. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. Spencer Steer will hit next. That one finds the zone. Strike one with the tying run at the plate here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Line drive. That’s a base hit. The throw to third. He’s in there. Always feels amazing getting the job done when the team needs you to come through. Just bigger than your own individual stats. You often hear the phrase short to it, long through it, and that’s a great example of it right there. Got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing, and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Now, a huge bat in this game coming up. Stevenson at the plate now and that’s inside in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. Two on, one out and that one missing low. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. Next offering is outside. Will Benson in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And that’s with for a base hit. In to score is the runner from third. It’s an RBI single and it’s a one-run game. Such great concentration. Everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing. And there he doesn’t try to do too much. First and second, one out. Now it’s the right fielder, Will Benson. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. And that’s outside. Signs of activity in the pen for the Marlins. Ronnie Enriquez preparing to come on if needed. Number 66, the lefty warming up as well. Ground ball right side. Could be two. Fired to second. Return throw to first. Got him. Double play. And that’ll do it. But the RBI single pushes across a run. And this is now a 2-1 ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Taylor Rogers. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Eric Wagaban now at the plate. That’s in there. Strike one. Looks like he’s sacrificed to pitch right down the middle for tracking and timing. Some good hitters will do that. Next offering is downstairs. Activity in the bullpen for the Reds. Brent Sudter up and throwing for Terry Francona. Burns a right-hander loosening up as well. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. hacks and misses. It’s a strike out now. Now the left fielder, Ariberto Hernandez, one for three and first offering is fouled off. One down, base is empty. Here’s a swing and a little roller up along first and that’s just foul. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Chance to strike out the side. Now, you talk about the benefits, the advantages of relievers who can come in and get the swing and miss, whether it’s inherited runners or maybe a little jam that they get into themselves, knowing that they can miss the bat. Tell you what, that’s huge and can change the ball game. Tap foul at the plate. Not looking like they’ll be adding any insurance runs heading to the bottom of the ninth. So, it’s going to be on the bullpen to hold this lead. Justice. No, that’s out. One-run game here in the top of the ninth. And there’s a foul ball. Oh, and he hit him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Next to Dane Myers. Dane Meyers. That was the sweeper, but it missed inside. Just missed. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. That catches the outside corner. Two and one now. Swings and chases a low one there. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Line drive. That’s a base hit. And out to a board. And now it’s the switch hitting second baseman Xavier Edwards 0 for four. Two strikeouts and two ground outs. First pitch misses. Crowd locked in right now. One-run game here in the ninth. Two balls, no strikes to count. Two on, two outs. Turned on, but foul wide of third. to third. Slings it across. That ends the inning as they squander a chance to pick up some insurance. So, it’s no runs on a hit, no errors, and two are left. And 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Marlins two and the Reds one. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Ronnie Enriquez. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. Enriquez. Well, one-run game and ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Christian and Caros. And the slider just misses. The guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off speed pitch. That one ripped and that’s a fair ball. Now he turns and heads for second. Here comes the throw. And he breaks the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Well, that at bat had a lot of pressure riding on it. So really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. And now a crucial opportunity to tie up this game with another base hit. Substitution now at second base. Entering is the pinch runner. Reese Hines. So digging in TJ Fredle in there for strike one. Well, comfortable or not, these are the situations closers they seem to live for. I mean, you get into some hot water, a jam, tough spot, whatever you want to call it, but this is where they earn their keep. One-run game. Bottom nine. Line to left and it stays fair. Runner around third. He’ll score in safely at second base. And that’s the potential winning run with nobody out. That’s a lonely feeling for an outfielder. The read wasn’t great and it really hurts when it cost your team a run. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Mlan getting ready to hit. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. 0 and one. The winning run on second base and a base hit. Throw comes in and the winning run stops 90 ft from home. Nobody out. Well, that’s a smart decision to hold up with one out and the heart of the order coming up. Don’t want to run into an out at home plate. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Ronnie Enriquez gives way and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. Back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching the leftander on now Gibson. And as relievers go, he’s not a big strikeout guy. Tries to force weak contact. So command and execution are huge for him. Big attack coming up with Ellie Dea Cruz stepping in 0 for three with three strikeouts. Right through there for a strike. No balls, one strike. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Swinging a foul out of play. And one and two. Homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit. headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball out to short. Nice stop from his backside. There’s one on the first. Ow. Double play. Just got it there in time. Oh, very fast developing play right there. No margin for error. Nice double play on a fast runner up the line. Next is the designated hitter, Austin Hayes. 0 for three with two flyyous and a strikeout. That clips the inside corner for a strike. Trying to send this to extra innings. Line and that’s a base hit. Across is the winning run and the Reds walk it off and win it 32. Well, you come to the ninth inning down first. You’re looking to tie it. They did that, but then they got the extra to put themselves on top. These players knew exactly what it was going to take to win this ball game. I love it when you see a team find a way to win, and that’s what they did today. A 32 final score in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami.
